Things are a bit late in the garden this year. The 'red' carrots I planted May 12 are very unimpressive; the foliage is starting to die off, meaning that they are done growing, but they are small and more of a deep orange than red. The wax beans just started producing. They have a good flavor and are nicely stringless, which I appreciate. Tomatoes are going to bury me in the next month; I will make so much sauce! The cucumbers I planted - three separate times - come up and then die off before ever producing a full-sized cuke. Do not know WHAT's up with that.

Also, it's elderberry time. I need to get all the rest of the peaches preserved somehow and also pick and process elderberry. Help!

Pinkttore is like a pack of mystery gummies, each one different flavoured!

Oh the berries in my header are elderberries! They have many uses in both jams, food colouring, wine, and have many medicinal uses too!

Unless you're eating raw/uncooked berries and flowers, in which case you're gonna be blasting out of both ends and possibly end up comatose. They contain lectin and cyanide so, y'know, don't go plucking these off the bush and eating them.

Wanna know something kinda fucked up? These used to grow at my elementary school. There are houses right next door and one had an elderberry tree. There was a big ol' branch right above the sandbox, where all the kids grade 1-3 kids would play. We also had another berry that grew on a tree that kinda looked like blueberries, and we have nightshades growing along the fence. Never addressed by the school. The only time the school addressed a dangerous plant was when walnuts would fall in the school yard, and even then it was because we had one kid with a severe nut allergy.

Tbh I'm surprised I've never heard a story about a kid eating those berries and getting sick. I guess the kids in my class were smart enough to know not to, but there's GOTTA be someone who ate the berries. I know I wanted to eat the elderberries, even though I knew they would probably kill me.

Anyways no, pinkttore is not black currant flavoured, though that DOES give me a funny idea. Maybe depending on what he eats his hair will change to a different shade of pink. Eat too many peaches? Peachy. Eat too much cotton candy? Pastel pink. Eat too much watermelon? Almost red.

More elderberries! My favorite thing about harvesting elderberries is picking them off the umbrels afterwards. It is a time consuming process that takes about 2 and a half hrs, but its time I relish. I get to sit in front of the TV and binge as many garden tours as I can squeeze in, all in the name of processing harvest. And I can't put it off until later either - once the berries are picked I have about a day before they either have to be processed some way or other or frozen. It's just the same as of I grew shelling peas that all needed to be shelled and stored. Thankfully, God has blessed us with some jobs that are equally restorative and productive.
