According to PUMA

PUMA has signed five-time Olympic champion and fastest woman alive Elaine Thompson-Herah. The 30-year-old Jamaican will further boost the company’s impressive roster of track and field athletes ahead of the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Elaine Thompson-Herah is the first woman in history to win the "sprint double" at consecutive Olympics, capturing gold in both the 100 meter and 200 meter at the 2016 Rio Olympics and again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Apart from her historic Olympic achievements, Elaine Thompson-Herah became the fastest woman alive when she ran 10.54 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, USA, in 2021.

“We are thrilled that Elaine has chosen to join the PUMA family,” said PUMA CEO Bjørn Gulden. “With her speed she embodies everything we stand for as a brand. Elaine ran the second-fastest time in women's history last year and is only 0.05 seconds off a world record. She really targets the 100-meter world record and we want to help her achieve that goal with our most innovative performance products.”

PUMA has a long and rich history in Track & Field and has sponsored the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association since 2002. Elaine Thompson-Herah now joins her Jamaican compatriot, sprint superhero, world record holder and Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt.

She became a household name after setting world records in the 100m & 200m at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea She did it with notable flair, too. In an age where runners were told, strictly, not to wear their hair long, wear jewelry or grow long nails, Flo Jo did just those things. It didn’t make her any slower, as coaches of the era would've claimed. She was the fastest runner in the world and she was going to act like it. Four-inch, decorative nails. One-legged leotards. Long, flowing hair. It didn't matter. She became such a fashion icon that, after Griffith retired from track in 1989, she was commissioned by the #IndianaPacers to design their uniforms. The “Flo-Jo’s,” as they were lovingly named, are still an icon of 90s basketball. Griffith was part of a family that became track royalty. She married Al Joyner, gold medal winner in the triple jump during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Her sister-in-law was Jackie Joyner-Kersee, an all-time great in the heptathlon and long jump who won six Olympic medals. Griffith passed away of an epileptic seizure in 1998. She had been treated for three seizures throughout the 1990s. She was 38. To date, her 200m world and Olympic record (21.34) as well as her 100m world record (10.49) still stand. Jamaicans and other track and field fans are expressing their grouse online and threatening to boycott the Nike brand unless they show due respect to Olympic champion and the fastest woman in the world Elaine Thompson-Herah. In a series of tweets started by influential media personality Debbie Bissoon, the tension is growing high between Nike and the Jamaican culture.  Bissoon tweeted, “Hey @Nike I know I’m just one person but I’m not buying another Nike anything until you all do right by @FastElaine. Not even a congratulatory post on your IG??? I hope you are currently working on something with her”.
