A friend told me I was on page 3 of today’s @edmontonsun. So of course I bought a copy. Great work on the story and photos by @anna.junker. I was there as indie media. I have a tendency to blend in with protesters. Blame it on my hat. And attitude. #yeg #yegphotographer https://www.instagram.com/p/CitGYNov4rP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

CANTLON'S CORNER: HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES OFF SEASON VOLUME 20
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Pre-season hockey has started and the playoffs begin this weekend in both Toronto and Edmonton. There have been two possible player moves that have come to light recently and the first concerns the Hartford Wolf Pack's Vinni Lettieri. The Pack forward will enter Group 6 free agency at the official conclusion of the 2019-20 hockey season. According to a Swiss-based website, watson.ch, Lettieri is in discussion with SC Bern (Switzerland-LNA), one of the top European teams, and not just in Switzerland. The team’s new head coach is former Hartford Whaler and New Haven Nighthawk, Don Nachbaur. Lettieri has completed three seasons in Hartford and rung-up 132 points in 173 AHL games and was the leading goal scorer in each of his three seasons. In 61 games of the pandemic shortened 2019-20 season, he tallied 35 goals in 61 games and a team-leading 47 points. He was originally signed as a free agent out of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers on March 27, 2017, and played the final nine games of the regular season in Hartford. He led the Wolf Pack with 23 goals in 55 games in his first season, and in his sophomore season, he had 23 goals in 48 games. Lettieri played 46 games with the Rangers with two goals and six assists with constantly fluctuating periods of ice time and had no recalls last season. Read the full article

Hot Topic : Alberta’s top doctor becomes overnight sensation on social
It’s like she’s been training for this her whole life.
Two weeks after being propelled onto the provincial and national stages, Dr. Deena Hinshaw has already become something of an overnight celebrity.
She’s attracted more than 29,000 Twitter followers in mere days and a dress she wore recently, featuring the periodic table of elements, had the phone ringing off the hook at Victoria, B.C., clothing maker Smoking Lily, which quickly put the item back into production.
Only thing is, Hinshaw hasn’t trained at all for her current star turn: Alberta’s chief medical officer of health has devoted much of the past two decades to the world of medicine, getting her undergraduate degree at Augustana University College in Camrose, then her medical degree at the University of Alberta.
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, though, the province’s top doctor has had to go from being a mostly behind-the-scenes expert to one featured daily on TV and internet. It’s a job most mere mortals would run screaming from, having to deliver increasingly disturbing reports on new cases and, as of Friday, at least one death of our fellow Albertans.
But she does such an incredible job of it, mixing expert information and advice, along with kindness, compassion and an utter absence of politicking.
No wonder, then, her praises are being sung on social media, while her recent sartorial choice sparked a level of interest usually reserved for the likes of Meghan Markle and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.
She now has non-profit T-shirts marketed with her likeness.
Mandy Stobo, the Calgary artist famed for the “Scuba Nenshi” portrait during the 2013 flood, has turned her artistic talents to her newest hero.
“She has just such a calm and confident way of speaking about something that’s just so, so bad,” says Stobo of the portrait of Hinshaw, a PDF of which she will provide free to fellow fans at stoboart.com. “Dr. Hinshaw is so relatable and yet so knowledgeable. I think she is getting me and a lot of other Albertans through a very tough time.”
Another T-shirt, available at together.printmachine.ca, was created in her honour by Edmonton’s Brendan Brown. Hinshaw is framed by an aura behind her head reminiscent of an angel’s halo, with her now-famous phrase, “We are in this together,” and on the back, “even if we’re far apart.” All proceeds are going to the Edmonton food bank.
Braid: Dr. Hinshaw builds trust as virus crisis deepens
Alison Van Rosendaal is another who felt compelled to come up with a way to honour her local hero, a woman she describes as “a beacon of goodwill and serving the common good.” Taking a break from her PhD in education studies, Van Rosendaal did a screen capture of Hinshaw at one of her information briefings and emblazoned it with the saying, “What would Dr. Hinshaw do?”
Working with Calgary’s 72 Clothing Co. to get the T-shirts printed, Van Rosendaal, with the help of sister Julie Van Rosendaal, a local CBC personality and cookbook author, is selling the T-shirts at whatwoulddrhinshawdo.ca.

Driving Is Terrible
Driving is basically the act of controlling a 4 ton hunk of metal as it barrels down a paved surface. So you would assume that logical sensible decisions were made when designing rules for driving. Nope. They were all designed back when we had horses and from what I can tell have never ever changed.
And driving is confusing. There is this one right turn place which I drive past a lot which has one of those bus cove things. And 9 out of 10 times cars will turn into the cove thinking it's where you make right turns. And when they do you can practically hear every single person behind them collectively facepalm. Who designed this?
People are already not great drivers. We were not designed for this. But we could do with a little less backwards confusing rules. I'm not talking about stupid things like which side of the road to drive on. No, no, no. I'm talking about big things that just drive me crazy. Things like:
Turning Lanes For An Intersection Make No Sense
Usually when you are on a small road and you're driving into a big intersection there will be 2 lanes for cars. And there are three ways you can go. You can go left, forward, or right. But here's the problem. How do you fit three directions into 2 lanes. Well, obviously one of the lanes will have to accommodate two directions. Basic pigeon hole principle. But which ones and which directions?
Let me make it easier for you. Left turn can only go on a green light. Forward can only go on a green light. Right can go on a red or green light. So if you have right going with any other direction you're going to have a right turn waiting for a green light because there's a car in front of them. So we have our answer. The only logical answer is to have right turns in the right lane and all other cars in the left lane. Problem solved.
But this isn't how it works in real life. Cars going straight go in the right lane. Why? It just makes my blood boil. It is just so inefficient. You know that problem where right turning cars have to wait on a car going straight? It happens all the time. We’ve even made up this stupid little thing where the straight car goes forward a little so the right turning car can slip in the gap. It is infuriating.
2 Lane Roads That Become 3 Lane Roads And Back Again
There are a lot of roads that magically alternate between 2 and 3 lane roads. And I could understand this if they just stayed 3 lane roads for miles and miles but no. They turn to 3 lane roads and back to 2 lane roads literally a few blocks later. This is just maddening. Because every time they do this a bunch of cars need to scramble once they see the 'this lane must turn right' sign. At least tell me a block before I actually have to turn. But no, you tell me like 10 metres before or even worse.
So let's see if this is worth all the trouble. 3 lanes are better than 2 right? Well, thankfully we can reduce this problem to a maximum flow graph. It's basically a problem where we see how much water we can pump through a bunch of pipes. So our road simplified will look something like this:
A 2 @@ @@ @@ @@ @@@@ @@ @@ 2 + A @@ @@@@ @@ @@ @@ @@ A 2
So A is the added capacity. And we can see our originally 2 lane road can get up to A more capacity. Looks pretty good, right? As long as A is a positive value it's worth it. But this isn't how the real world works. Very rarely are roads at 100% capacity. Let's make a more detailed model.
a c/2 @@ @@ @@ @@ @@@@ @@ @@ a + c / 2 + A @@ @@@@ @@ @@ @@ @@ a c/2
So something I forgot to mention earlier is we assume this is a perfect system. Just as many cars are entering through alternate roads as they are going in. Otherwise we'd have a bottleneck.
So what does this tell us? We now have a little A of added throughput and a big A of added capacity. Let's assume A > a in this example for simplicity. So now we can write 2 + A - x = a + c (meaning we have X wasted capacity) How big is X? Well, here we will add a small assumption. We will assume X is about 50% of 2 + A. This means we expect the road to be half full on average. A reasonable assumption, although I’m no expert.
So we have (1/2)(2 + A) = a + c > 2 (meaning that our new capacity should be greater than the capacity we started with namely 2). Working with these equations we get:
1 + A/2 > 2 -> A/2 > 1 -> A > 2. So what does this tell us. It tells us we need to double the number of cars in our 3 lane section for another lane to be worth while. Excuse me. Not double the number of cars. Add the capacity number of cars. Which is sort of, what's the word, never going to happen.
The only assumption we made here is the road is capped at 50% capacity. That's how many cars we expect to see. If there is higher utilization it may be more worth while and at 100% utilization it's trivially worth while for any positive number of cars.
But with these 3 lane road sections you're unlikely to ever get this much traffic so it's just not worth it. Definitely not worth the stress and the heartache that drivers have to go through because of questionable design decisions.
Special Cases Trying To Shepherd People Into Being More Efficient
I have to admit that when I see one of those pictures of a road with a bus terminal and dedicated bus lanes it just looks so good. You know the ones. But when you step back from looking at these you have to ask, "Who came up with this?" Using a dedicated lane for buses? Unless you have a lot of buses all filled to capacity probably not the best idea.
But this doesn't end with dedicated bus lanes. No, they're only the latest dumb trend to appear. Also HOV lanes. OK, just read this and this and this.
Presentations by public agencies on behalf of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are generally promotional, frequently disingenuous, and usually very short on evidence pertinent to assessing the purported claims made by HOV boosters.
Ouch, harsh. Even for me. It is really cute that politicians think they can change how people act by putting a bunch of lanes with a special label on them. OK, look. HOV lanes have let's say 2x the number of people per car (or 3x). So they have to have at least half (or a third) as many cars. Do they? Well maybe occasionally on highways but very rarely in real life. And then factor in that this lane often gets blocked by turning cars and cars trying to change lanes and it gets even worse.
It doesn't take a genius to realize these are a bad idea. So what about busses? Well, I doubt anyone is going to take the bus because it's like 10 minutes faster. Or maybe they will. Like 2 people.
And yet society goes on and on with this broken system. They're doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. The very definition of insanity. What's next? Buses going through intersections like fscking railroad crossings? I hope not.
In closing I'd like to say road ways are like the free market. Complicated, dangerous, and with a surplus of speculators that have no idea what they're doing.
