Final Day of Food Drive For Christmas 2023 - Today over 25,000lbs Picked... The 13th annual food drive collections by Kary Movers in collaboration with the Surrey Food Bank culminated today, with an estimated 25,000lbs of food and essential supplies being delivered to the Surrey Food Bank Warehouse and Distribution Centre, located at 13478 78 Ave Unit - 1, Surrey, BC. Despite a minor delay due to a locked truck after a driver locked the keys inside, the week-long drive saw an overwhelming response from schools, businesses, and other groups across Metro Vancouver. The food bank has reported a significant increase of about 40% in the number of clients this year, underscoring the importance of such community initiatives. Kary Movers donates the use of its trucks and covers fuel costs, while the staff volunteers their time to collect and deliver donations. PEACE, WWII EXTRA edition, from Robert Reid’s collection. This paper was a late edition of the August 14, 1945 Vancouver Sun. The next day, a special edition paper used much of the previous day’s layout, but that long awaited headline nearly disappeared entirely. I’ll show you what survives on the microfilm version tomorrow.

Museums and archives generally don’t like taking on newspapers, as they are perpetually degrading, and their preservation often seems futile. As a result, many rare and obscure papers have been / and are continually lost to the ravages of time.

These EXTRA editions are a prime example of that. The EXTRA editions quite often were never microfilmed, as these copies weren’t distributed by subscription ~ you had to hit the streets to get your hands on one. Even on the rare occasion when they were microfilmed, the unique colours of the paper or the bold headline colours would be lost forever. As scanning technology improves, it becomes more and more feasible to capture the existing quality of the original with outstanding results.

The newspapers I will feature here have been scanned or photographed a number of different ways. I’ve used flatcopy digital photography, flatbed scanning, and more recently large format CCD scanning. The WWI paper posted previously appears to be flatcopy digital photography [done by the Museum of Vancouver]; the WWII paper was just done with a large format CCD scanner.

Each has their own benefits, and each also has their own vulnerabilities. But when it comes to anarchically preserved newspapers, anything is better than nothing at all!

Is a Thriving Cannabis Black Market in BC the Truth?

Report Says Yes While Stats Say No – LPC A recent article in the Vancouver Sun suggests that a “thriving” cannabis black market still exists. (Please see link below.) However, the numbers tell a different story. The newspaper’s investigation found that five illegal retail cannabis stores open on a Sunday night in Vancouver. One of them, Granville Cannabis, had been raided a month before. “We know that there’s still the illegal stores up and operating,” said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. “The community safety unit has been out. They initially do site visits … saying ‘Hey, here’s the rules. And if you don’t abide by them, then we will be paying you additional visits. There will be confiscation of product and administrative fines.’” Indeed the numbers in the Vancouver Sun article seem to suggest that there isn’t really a thriving cannabis black market at all. Illegal stores are slowly getting squeezed out. Farnsworth said that 90 illegal retail outlets have shut down voluntarily and 36 are facing “administrative penalties”. Meanwhile, there were 256 licences for private stores and 16 government stores. Twenty-seven more private stores are waiting final inspection before opening. Further, Statistics Canada’s most recent report on cannabis users said that, in 2019, B.C. had the lowest number of residents purchasing from legal sources at just 36.6 per cent.
