SO I just fell down a rabbit hole of your art tag (the only time tumblr's 'more like this' feature is a blessing rather than a curse), and aside from blowing up your notifications, I wanted to ask you about your favourite IF games/demos you've played over the years? >:3

tbh i haven't been reading many IFs during the past couple of years and most of those i have followed are in limbo.

GOD I loved your MidCin reviews. I remember loving Rayvis (I was just 14 back then, so yeah...) because I felt he was the most decent guy there. Also, I don't remember they having SO much sex so I wasn't uncomfortable, at least. But I agree most of my love for this game are pure nostalgia and respect to my first true otome I've played. I wanted to ask: did you play any other Cybird game? I'd love to see you roasting them more (esp their twu wuv's w/o chemistry problem!!)

I hope I'm not replying too late! I really need to be better about checking... online things in general ^^;; (also also I don't understand why I don't get an alert? Or why they don't show the dates of asks? I'm probably missing something...)

Hmm, I think I tested out that historical Cybird one with the voice acting because the MC's a seamstress but the buck wild use of historical figures and the convenient absence of an actual black man who actually lived in Japan at the time, serving under Oda Nobunaga(!) just kinda made me not want to play. Especially when these men's lives were incredibly interesting in their own right; the forced romance and vaguely explained time travel was wholly unnecessary. They couldn't even do anything meaningful with the seamstress thing besides oh she sews some stuff for her beau du jour. Dude voice acting Masamune's hot though >.>

As you might have noticed, I have markedly less time to play anything in general, much less otomes with lacklustre plots. In fact, I have an ever growing list of games/books that I mean to get to but, uh, haven't touched yet >.<

But let me end on a more positive note: a recommendation of otomes I did enjoy!

Changeling by Steamberry Studio: The team put a lot of effort into researching and building the lore in this one. I appreciate the fact that high school teenagers read like high school teenagers and since our characters are, well, teenagers, you aren't getting huge all or nothing confessions of love in the romantic endings. Also, I just saw that it's on sale for another day?! Quick, check out the demo, and take advantage of the sale if the VN's to your fancy! Side note, Steamberry's newest otome is on my [much too long] list of games to play, that's how much I enjoyed Changeling.

Ebon Light by Underbliss: Very impressive for a pay-what-you-want. You can even customize the MC's look! I found the lore interesting but a touch underdeveloped, and the story had a few pacing issues, but all in all, I had lots of fun playing.

War of Roses by owl: If you're looking for something short and sweet and relaxing, this might be up your alley. Also has a customizable MC!

Arcade Spirits by Fiction Factory: I low-key love the setting of this game. I wouldn't necessarily categorise this game as an otome since you can keep all relationships platonic and you don't have to play as a female MC. As a paid game, I kind of wish the MC customization had more options and that the different love interest routes varied more. It's not my favourite of the VNs I've played "recently" but I do like the world and appreciate the love that clearly went into making the game.

In no particular order, visual novels that live rent free in my soul...

Royal Alchemist and Royal Order by @niftyvisuals - I love romance combined with skill checks. I felt like the plot was really well fleshed out, too.

Andromeda Six by Wanderlust Games. - <3 sci-fi and also Calderon and Damon are mine!!

Ebon Light by @underbliss - this was the first visual novel I ever played and it's sooooo good, it really caught me off guard.

Infinite Stars - another great sci-fi one.

Imperial Grace by @synstoria - this one is gender locked and it's an otome but I'm a suck for royal things (hence my own game haha).

Red Embrace: Hollywood by @argentgames- oh shit, this game is gritty and deals with some heavy shit in the best way. 11/10. Can't sink my teeth into it enough ;D Markus is just...chef's kiss.

When The Night Comes by Lunaris Games - August is just...incredible and I love them so much <3 their romance route really f'd me up (in a good way).

Errant Kingdom by Lunaris Games - you don't have to romance in this game. I do enjoy that, personally, and I love Lucien and Erik with a vengeance.

Gilded Shadows by @steamberrystudio - this one is GxB genderlocked as well but damn Ari is *heart eyes*.

Super/Human Identity by Rock A Role Games - pretty cool premise and gotta love superpowers.

Oathbreaker Season 1 and Season 2 by @larkylabs - also otome/genderlocked but I think the plot and characters are fleshed out really well. The kid is adorbs.

Our Life: Beginnings & Always by @gbpatchupdates - I was so surprised by how lovely this was! At the end of my first play through, Cove had discovered he has autism and my partner has autism, so I thought that was pretty cool and I went and gushed to him about the game. So much representation and variations in this game! 100/10!

But there are other VNs I need to try but hard to choose. If anyone has a good recommendation for what I play next, please pass it along <3

1. Ebon Light —(10/10 absolutely gorgeous art)

a destitute human girl is swept away by beautiful elves to a dark, magical land facing a mysterious foe as they search for a way to use the poisonous magic she accidentally “stole” (from pirates!) before it kills her and dooms them.

2. Scout —(8/10 unfinished and abandoned, text only)

a girl is living in a completely destroyed world of nothing but desert in a small community of survivors scouring the land for resources and signs of other life. corruption, paranoia, poverty, and a strict caste culture navigate her to begin a search on her own, against hostility from all sides.

3. Lake of Voices —(9/10 loads of endings, tense)

a guard travels with a fellow guard to reach the neighbouring kingdom as quickly as possible. that means travelling the dangerous lake, across a confusing maze of wooden footbridges. fighting against fear, enveloped darkness, an uncaring guide, and the ruthless Nixi seeking to pull any human soul into the watery depths, every move she makes spells death for her party of terrified fellow travellers.

4. Obscura —(10/10 sooo creative but still in development)

a girl diagnosed with a rare illness travels below the earth to a dangerous marketplace located in a massive cavern, searching for an even rarer substance to cure her. everyone hides their identity with fake names and a mask in this place that sells anything for the right price, and the price is steep.

5. Cupid —(11/10 devastating, each ending will haunt you)

a one-eyed girl seeks revenge after the death of her best friend, catherine. catherine’s betrothed, a french nobleman, is the obvious suspect, but he is a devious, charming, mysterious monster. the girl is guided by the voice of her mother, and wrestles with her own darkness, memories, sense of morality, and her devotion to her mother as he pulls her into his twisted, sadistic world of cat and mouse.

Five Comfort Characters, Five Tags

Tagged by @georgiedoesntfloat - This was way harder then I expected because I had to decide what a 'comfort character' even means to me! (Also, I'm not tagging anyone because I tired from editing and this has been sitting in my drafts for days. So if you see this and want to do it too, awesome, consider yourself tagged!) 1) Falkor from The Neverending Story

My sister and I watched the movie a lot when we were kids, and we both loved Falkor so freaking much! He somehow made me feel like things would be okay, both in the story, and even in my own life. Which, frankly, was something I desperately needed growing up. (If you also loved this movie, I highly recommend reading the book! The movie only covers the first 40% or so of the book.) 2) Sarah from The Labyrinth

This was another movie we watched a lot. Looking back I think Sarah was a good hero for me, and in some ways I really related to her. She was another character that made me feel like I could defeat the odds against me and come out the other side. 3) Cove Holden from Our Life: Beginning & Always

This was the first VN I played, I didn't even know what visual novels were when I started playing it! At the time I found it, I was going through a lot in my life, and playing it a billion times helped me work through some really big things. Cove is so kind and really supportive of the MC, the friendship between the two of them is really lovely. Cove, and this game, literally changed my life for the better in multiple ways. 4) Haron Milirose from Ebon Light

Haron's brother, Ernol, may be my favorite romance in the game, but Haron is my comfort character. He's positive, sweet, and flirty in a way I actually think is fun. The MC goes through some shit in this game, and Haron is a ray of sunshine through it all - and he calls her "shining light"! This assassin-in-training takes the honor of being the subject of the first fan fic I wrote. Yes, this was the game that pushed me to start writing, and it's the game that first put the idea in my head that someday I could make my own game. (If you can't read the text, it says: "I said that in complete innocence, madralee." Trust me, his comment prior to this was not completely innocent.)

5) Red Antiqua from Shepherds of Haven (but almost tied with him for comfort characters are: Shery Acquell, Trouble Alder, Caine Tavadon, and Mimir.)

First off I love all the characters in Shepherds of Haven so much, but only some of them would I consider comfort characters. Red very narrowly wins over the rest in the comfort character category. I can't feel bad when I'm playing a scene with Red in it. His kindness, maturity, gentleness, and nerdy infodumps about magic always cheer me up. Red's a bit of a flirt too, but in a different way than Haron. He's another character that makes me feel like things will be okay, even though sometimes the MC has to reassure him since he's a worrier. (This is only part of a beautiful fan art by @stilwaterbutcher of Red and her lovely character, Guinevere. Please go look at the full piece! Y'all have no idea how hard it was to pick only one fan art of Red to use, there are so many stunning pieces out there!)
