St Patrick's Cathedral is renowned for its titanic bronze doors, gorgeous high altar, and rich Neo-Gothic architecture, including thousands of stained glass windows. From a historical perspective, it's the final resting place of some of New York's most legendary humanitarians and clergymen. The Cathedral can be seen the movie, The Godfather Part 3. . . . #timessquarestpatricks#travelgram#instagood#dublincastle#me#architecturephotography#wanderlust#trip#nycity#instatravel#cathedral#bigapple#saintpatrickscathedral#empirestatebuilding#beautiful#architecture#neogothic#gothicarchitecture#gothic#monument#building#worship (at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkOQWvZur0q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Dublin Castle Scandal
CW: anti-LGBTQ language. A brief intro into a very complicated court case in our Q history.
It all starts in the 19th century: Ireland was part of the British Empire, and the centre of British rule was right in Dublin Castle. That meant that British and Irish people from all classes and backgrounds lived and worked in this epicentre of Dublin; from army men, to bankers to students. And In 1884, men from all these different demographics were publicly accused of having homosexual relationships right in Dublin Castle.
The Dublin Castle scandal is a complex court case, but if you dear reader have ever made a sandwich, you will already know one of the characters!  Malcolm Johnston of Johnston Mooney and O’Brien bakery fame would be called as a witness during one of the trials.
Irish journalists at the time claimed that staff were throwing homosexual orgies at Dublin Castle. These journalists were mostly nationalists who believed that Ireland should be governed by the Irish. They wanted the British out and making the establishment (based of course in Dublin Castle) look perverted and evil was a good start.
Up until 1993, homosexuality was illegal in Ireland. In The Dublin Castle scandal, nationalist Ireland blamed these ‘crimes’ of same-sex activity on the decadent British empire, and the press at the time called this “vice” a foreign import. So not only was being gay a crime, it was unpatriotic!
When one high-ranking figure in British society was found guilty of “buggery” and “conspiracy to corrupt young men”, the Irish celebrated with street parties and bonfires.
And so, in the minds of the Irish public, Dublin Castle became “a bastion of corrupting perverts”, and any queer men who were involved were seen as “preying on the literal flesh of young Ireland”.
And so, Dublin Castle is the site of a horrendous chapter in our queer history, but it also happens to be the site of a great win in our ongoing battle for equality. On May 23rd 2015, an enormous crowd along with political figures, drag queens and campaigners gathered together in Dublin Castle to celebrate the overwhelming Yes vote in the marriage equality referendum. That referendum passed with a majority of 62%, making Ireland the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote. There was partying on the streets of Dublin that night too, but this time it was in celebration of the queer community.

Dublin Castle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dublin Castle is located in Dublin, Ireland. The castle complex serves as a major Irish Government center and a tourist attraction. The castle was built for defense by King John of England and was largely completed by 1230. The castle was designed in a Norman courtyard style with a central square, flanked by defensive walls that were protected at each corner with a circular tower. Through the middle ages, the castle’s structure was altered with additions added, although not all the additions remain today. The castle survived a fire in 1684 and was transformed into a Georgian palace. The majority of the medieval buildings remain under ground today with the exception of the Record and Bermingham Towers, which are the sole surviving towers from the original fortification. The castle boasts State apartments in the upper yard buildings, a Throne room, a State drawing room, a State dining room, State bedrooms, a State corridor, and Saint Patrick’s Hall, which was once a ballroom, but is currently used for presidential inaugurations. The opulent Royal Chapel was completed in 1814 and opened on Christmas Day. The chapel was the third chapel in the castle and the second in this location. The crypt of the Royal Chapel is now used as an art center. The Chester Beatty Library houses the Silk Road Café, while the Treasury Building houses a police museum. Dublin Castle is open to the public.
