Also I'm finding that newer digital cameras have so many insane features??? Maybe I've been shooting film and an ancient DSLR for too long because people complain about focus tracking and I've never had a camera with focus tracking so I always have to do it manually and don't have issues getting good shots?? It's just kinda funny to me to see people making complaints that the focus tracking isn't perfect when I've never needed focus tracking. Like maybe it would help, but also I worry it would just get in my way, y'know?

What type of camera do you usually work with? Are they DSLRs or those new fangled "mirrorless" DSLR-style cameras? I'm looking into potentially getting a new camera. I currently have a Canon EOS Rebel DSLR and a bunch of the new ones are these mirrorless ones...what makes them different from a point and shoot? (Nothing wrong with a point and shoot but why would I want the big one over the regular one?)
I use a Canon Mark DSLR that's a bit outdated- I think it was a factory overstock from 2009. My newer camera is a Rebel from 2019, but I typically dont use it much because the Mark has better ISO capability.
I have never used a mirrorless, but our company is switching to them soon.
So as far as I'm aware, there are two ways to improve camera technology from where weve been the past decade.
1. Features like wifi connectivity, which are great for some types of photography and pointless for most people
2. ISO capability- it processes better detail in low light situations.
I'm told by people who shoot mirrorless that they are a massive improvement for ISO. Which is why they're kind of a big deal- they make it easier to get good detail in the dark and the technology to do so is getting less expensive to produce.
I want one, personally, because I do a lot of indoor photography and I need to balance exposure for shutter speed. But I cant really afford a new body right now and I dont NEED one, so I'm going to wait a few years and see if they show up secondhand.

HOW DO YOU GET THAT VINTAGE LOOK I'VE BEEN TRYING FOR AGES I don't want to buy a polaroid
Doesn't show but I'm actually excited as fuck about it. I've been a photographer for like, what, six years? maybe seven? I have a trusty DSLR that might be old by today's standards but still takes beautiful, professional quality pictures. I've tried all kinds of flashes and filters to get this sort of look but you know what did it? My mom's early 2000s camera. Yeah, one of these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that picture was taken with the camera on the left, a Samsung ST66, I would consider it a midrange 2010s digital camera in regards to the quality and liberty of adjustments. the camera on the right is my backup for the day, a Kodak Easyshare C142, your average economic family camera (everyone knows someone who owns one of these I believe)
Highest chances are, you probably have someone in your family with a digicam abandoned on some drawer because people don't use these anymore, they've abandoned them in favor of their phones. If this isn't the case, you can probably get one on a secondhand store or eBay, for pretty cheap!
(I don't have many recommendations, other than probably get one that's over 12mp, with at least 3x zoom, preferably from 2010 or newer. As to brands, it's a lottery. People recommend the Nikon Coolpix a lot (I love Nikon sensors so I can vouch for that much) or Olympus and Canon cameras. Despite what you may believe, Kodak hasn't made a good digital sensor since, well, never, so I wouldn't personally recommend it a lot)
Why a digicam?
why not!! here's two features of your digicam that your phone doesn't have:
- analog zoom: you know when you're zooming in on one of these and the lens starts making noises and moving around? that's the multiple individual lenses in your camera moving around so that you can zoom in three, five, or even ten times the size of your picture without losing any quality. what your phone does when you zoom in, in opposition, is basically cropping the picture you're taking. digital zoom is inherently lossy — not to mention the angular graduation of phone lenses causes the image to have some distortion in comparison to the way we see (yeah, this is why you look ugly on your pictures but pretty in the mirror)
- big, harsh, blinding flash: this is THE MAIN THING, the main element of that "polaroid look". These types of cameras have a limited or nonexistent aperture range, so they overcompensate by turning on auto flash. This overcompensation results in a very characteristic look that makes us feel nostalgic. when taking night pictures, turn that flash on!!!
and, here are two features of your digicam that a professional camera doesn't have:
- small, harsh, crappy flash: see: above. DSLR's built in flashes... They do the job. Everyone knows if you need the real deal you gotta get one of those big fancy fixtures, but also, Nikon doesn't want you taking crappy pictures with their camera so they put some work into defusing the flash and shit so it's not as crappy and harsh. Joke's on them, we kinda like that!!
- smaller, cheaper, limited, overall CRAPPIER: and you know what? That's good. A point and shoot cam is good actually!! we get lost in features and lenses and sometimes it's a bit much. A small portable camera with its so many limitations can help us focus on composition and storytelling, and mainly just... Having fun!!! photography used to be about having fun, remember? whether you're out on your own or with friends, you and other people will take your crappy digicam wayyy less seriously than they would your professional cam. And that takes a lot of pressure away.
Anyways this is your sign to dust off your crappy digicam and go shoot some pictures.

Random question if you don't mind answering, how do you make the turn-around gifs of your sculpture pieces? And do you have any advice for photographing your work in general? Love your art!! And no worries if you don't feel like answering!
Hi, thank you for your question! I made a simple solid-ish backdrop with a sheet and some boxes. I photographed the sculptures 10ish times, turning it a bit each time. I used a DSLR camera but a regular phone camera would work too. Then I transferred the photos over to my iPhone and used the AI subject selection to isolate the sculpture from the background. This could also be done relatively easily with photoshop, but I loathe Adobe software and this is better for me, although the AI selection is not always 100% accurate and sometimes the image needs to be messed with a bit so it will select the right parts. Then I take the transparent images into Clip Studio Paint and use its animation features to create a gif of the images I took. It takes some effort to resize and position the images right so it appears to be rotating in one place.
Ultimately there are probably easier ways to do it, like using a proper backdrop that looks nice enough on its own that it doesnt require you to make transparent images at all, or using a tripod so you don’t have to manually line up each image. But it works OK for me.

Lighting workshop
I participated in the lighting and photography workshop this week, we practiced setting up and lighting a portrait for the theme Disrupt. In groups we used automatic features on our phone camera to contrast a well-lit portrait with one disrupted using different materials and poses.
Following an introduction to the DSLR camera, we carried out the exercise again with studio cameras, lighting a setup with the manual shutter speed and aperture settings. Resources on camera work were given to us so we could expand on the session for the future.
After the workshop we can return to the studio, after being introduced to the area I am confident in lighting work from previous workshops
Here are some of the photos me and my group member took:
These two photos were took using the slow shutter speed function on the camera while moving bright lights behind
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here we layered different materials in front of the camera and added orange and purple lights for a galaxy effect

Do you have any suggestions for an entry-level macro setup for someone with a Nikon DSLR? Ideally something less than a few hundred dollars?
So there's lots of options for entry level macro!
Macro filters - These just screw on to the front of your lens and give you extra magnification. They're how I got started. Lots of options and brands here, I'd recommend getting a larger one and then a stop down kit (typically around $20-30) so they can be used on all of your lenses
Raynox 250 - A clip on macro filter. I use this on my macro lens to do super macros. I like it because unlike tubes I can still auto focus well (when doing macros you typically manual focus most of the time but I use this with moving bugs where auto focus is easier/better)
Various macro lenses. I'm assuming you're shooting with a crop sensor (dx) camera. Nikon makes a 40mm and an 85mm macro lens that are dx. There's also the 60mm 2.8, 105mm 2.8, and the 200 f4 (very expensive and big and bulky but the queen of macro). There's older versions of the 60mm that are just as good and cheaper than the newer model. Always check craigslist and marketplace, you can typically haggle for a lower price and this lets you try out the lens. Sigma also makes some great macro lenses. Nikon lenses are really cheap right now because everyone is jumping to mirrorless
35mm 1.8 dx - Not a true macro lens but does focus semi close. This was my go to lens on my D7100
Laowa lenses - these are fully manual lenses but they allow for greater than 1:1 magnification. Kind of pricy but used would be cheaper if you can find them.
Extension tubes (I use these ones). These will give you a bit of diffraction and you lose light so you'll need longer shutter speeds/better lighting but they work great. I like that these ones work with the electronics. They technically autofocus but it's crap. They work great with my D850s built in focus stack feature though.

Project: Disrupt
Week 2: Monday, 16/10/2023
I did the Photography workshop on Monday , and was given an introduction to Studio lighting and set up, and did a few portrait shots as a exercise using different lighting and "filters" to gain different affects and experiment with different out comes.
Tumblr media
We started off using the automatic features on our phones and took some normal portraits before experimenting and disrupting these portraits with different poses and coloured lights. We used a red light and pointed it from different angles gaining different interesting results, we also tried putting a piece of red plastic over the camera lense created a red filter.
Tumblr media
Using different phone cameras resulted in different quality photos, some of my photos were taken with my own phone and the photos me with red light were taken on A.J's phone. These photos of A.J were taken with their phone (which is brand new with a high quality camera) , and the quality was way better than my phone as you can see. With A.J, we also started with a basic portrait and then experimented with some slightly different poses, and then by reflecting light onto a golden reflective material from their side and then from behind them.
Tumblr media
These were also taken with A.J's phone, and we tried using a large translucent sheet of plastic and shined a bright light behind it while one of us posed. We used different coloured pieces of clear plastic in front of the camera, and interestingly enough the orange plastic would turn into a light warm grey (top left picture), we had to reposition and refocus the camera many times before it settled on orange, we had similar problems with the red plastics at times.
Tumblr media
After being shown how to use the DSLR camera we continued the to take a variety of different portraits using different methods once more but with the DSLR. I had a bit of difficulty adjusting to using it but managed to somewhat grasp it in the end. Here we experimented with the light projector and placed coloured plastic over it, and projected it onto the wall. I'm realising now that we used mainly red in this exercise and I think it suits the theme of disruption. I feel like red is a very disruptive colour, maybe its because red is often used as a warning colour, both in everyday life and in the wild.
Tumblr media
For our Project : Disrupt, an idea I had for my security camera concept was that while the p.o.v was switching cameras, in between switches a "normal" portrait in the background would change and become disrupted, distorted even, and switch back. But shown long enough to have the viewer second guessing themselves. As a reference for this I posed with this baby I found lying around and shot a impromptu Madonna and child. ( left image normal, right image disrupted)
Tumblr media
"Baby in a frame, I know, I know it's serious~" - The smiths (probably)
It's a framed baby, in a frame, with a lizard. If I had another frame I would've tripple framed it. This was completely self indulgent.
Overall, I now know that I just about know how to navigate the studio and light work from other workshops. I feel that I may need to revisit this workshop in the future or do my own research to gain a clearer understanding, but I just about have a grasp on it.

In other Asian-inspired & created TTRPG news, Scion: Realms of Magic & Mystery came out yesterday, featuring this illustration of Nüwa in an auntie visor, taking pictures in Tiān:
Scion 2e is a delight.
Tumblr media
There’re more content & cultures in the book, of course, but Nüwa in an auntie visor, with a DSLR camera.
That’s one of the most Scion images ever made.
Also, is Nüwa using a Canon 5d‽

In the land of the blind the naked man (or woman) is king (or queen) and when said residents are also repulsive and moronic as fuck, their disgusting and nasty ass worship of Renell Medrano is by far problematic and obnoxious. Renell is simply a shitty, ignorant and shady photographer who's been laundering money while hiding behind the facade of a phantom studio owner together wither her hideous goblin faced looking partner in crime, Jess Moloney. If you've been wondering where the hell did these bozos come out all of a sudden, then why don't you search them on this fucking site or on Google. Yeah, that's a good Y/N. You're in to find a wide variety of raving mad, totally demented & completely unhinged dug up on dirt on them. And all of this is real. All rumors are indeed real. Are you doubting your reality yet? If you aren't, you should. What are you waiting for then? The answer is wholly, fully, aggressively and vigourously staring in your face. Stop praising and worshiping worthless celebrities. Are you so into this kind of fucked up degradation? You'd be way better off drinking from a public restroom. Just quit dragging your feet on rusty, broken nails already!
Renell's shots are redundant. And boring at best. She's got zero technique. They look as if they were totally taken by someone else or someone else had dialed before the settings on her camera making it easy for her just so that she just needs to press a simple button.
Yet. Still. Renell. Won. The ICP Award. And she's sharing it with Moloney as if it was some rich old fuck's STD ridden deflated penis. Oh wait. Maybe that's how they got all that fame. Nothing new. Move along, nothing to see here.
Why is she always keen on showing her underwear in the least sexual contexts that could possiby exist?
I'm not MAGA, a centrist edge or some type of conservative. But why would you sexualize yourself for the male gaze so much?
Didn't she know in the United States it is estimated that around 70% of photographers are male and 30% are female? Didn't she know this imbalance is also reflected in the gender breakdown of photographers featured in galleries, exhibitions, and publications. Why is she sabotaging ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in the field of photography?
When was the last time a man dressed up like that to an award show or during a photo session?

FUUUUUUUCK those hideous hoes. With their phantom photo studios and all their stinking threesome shit. Fake ass ghetto hoes. I've never ever read about Renell discussing in detail about all the high end pro photo gear she's supposed to have used during her A list celebrity photo shoots. In her interviews for famous magazines are totally she gives cookie cutter instagram influencer answers to questions only somebody who was paid to interview her would ask her. She did not tag any camera, lens, brand, lighting equipment in any of her photos. She never even managed to get a camera brand sponsorship deal. She never spoke about what kind of backdrops, tripods, stands, props, accesories, reflectors, diffusers, blah blah blah she has been using in any of the Ice Studios sketchy physical locations that look like some junkies' rat infested derelict gathering dens. ffs. Her knowledge about photography lingo, history and styles is equal to fucking zero. There's photos of Renell with some analog cameras ( vintage medium format Mamiya RZ67 / unknown lens, vintage full frame Canon AE-1 with its famous f/1.8 50 mm prime lens, an unknown camera – which might be digital – with a Carl Zeiss Planar prime lens mounted on it, and probably a vintage Rolleiflex ) & 1 Canon full frame DSLR (not mirrorless) with an unknown lens. And that's about it. I'm not even going to mention her piss poor point and shoot that she was holding while wearing thong pants.......
Jess' bozo beauty ad interview is faker than a cheap Tijuana whore's feelings. It's been already debunked & you just have to search for it on Tumblr and Youtube.
instagram
youtube
youtube
Renell's website is as lousy as the Lice, I mean the Ice Studios one. I don't know what the fuck that is, but that cannot be named a website. https://icestudios.shop/
It's infuriating how now this hypocritical bitch believes she's the illest shit in skincare regimens at the moment. When you have shit for brains and connections to various available erections you think everybody is falling for your shtick. Well guess what broke ass fake bitches? Y'all ain't gonna see what's coming and when it's gonna hit ya. When ya least expect it. I've had enough of you! All you've ever done will be de-fucking-bunked. Now go back to schmuck sucking. The next one that ya'll be feeling in the back of your throats will be the IRSchlong.
Nonetheless, their dumbass fans know that and are foaming at the mouth while banging their crap filled heads against shitloads of walls. Yet they still haven't been able to convince anyone otherwise. They have an obvious masochistic stupid wish of being proven wrong for the 100th time. Relenlessly. Poor delusional and empty brained halfwits. Yes, all this really is very stupid and tremendously dumb. But they should rest assured they're gonna have their asses kicked and will now be therefore permanently wrecked. It'd be better for them to stop screaming from their top of their lungs so much insane batshit stereotypical influencer crap. And listen to the ones who are indeed irrefutable authorities on this subject. Renell's fans make me throw up. They need a serious beating with an iron crowbar over their empty heads. How else are they going to wake up to reality then? How else will they stop bloody beating their minced up meat around a heavily thorned bush? The hands that feed her hide deadly and dangerous long, sharp claws.
Renell doesn't assume the slightest shit of responsability for what she is supposed to be doing. She's been thoroughly brainwashed to believe everybody is a mindless and unschooled hoodrat whose minuscule mind is less worthy than a recycled garbage bin. Guess what, bitch? With her opening the door to everything here and beyond, she should've been ready to expect the unexpected when they invited us in. Now we're flooding her worthless being with facts rabidly biting her face, chewing on her pieces & spitting them out. Poor Renell and Jess! Looks like their only option is letting us stay and brutally dismantle their convoluted but fickle web of lies. My advice for her is go whine and cry at another table! Her and Jess' work doesn't even amount to a shitstain, maybe they should've tried to get hired as prison garbage sorters. Go hide under a rock while you still can.
youtube
I've seen much more believable and intelligent triple x-rated casting videos than this shit.
No bitch, STFU, just because you're using a notoriously overpriced and overhyped gadget gimmick that got the worst reviews it could get (the Kodak Super8 flop) doesn't make you an intellectually and morally superior artsy fartsy 10/10 honest gram photographer or videographer influencer switch. Fuck, I hate switching swish swish bitches. Pull your head out of your ass already, wannabe fucker! You're one utterly sad incompetent mistress of fuckconnery. An impostor.
It's so vile and so offensive to think she is a high-profile photographer with craploads of top of the top A-list celebrity photo sessions as hallmarks of her portfolio. No photographer would ever dare say such unbelievably ridiculous shit. Ever!
“I always get a thrill [out] of showing new stuff on Instagram, or whatever social platform, just because I feel like the people that appreciate my work have been supporters since day one. I’m not scared to put out new work, I kind of get this high from it. If I don’t get that from a photo, then I’m doing something wrong.”
"So most of these photos were taken on this Canon A E1, um, that I stole from my dad in a yard sale when I was. like 12. Um, and it has a 50 millimeter lens on it. And I always shoot on portrait of 400 film by Kodak."
"Why," you might be asking yourself. 'Cause FUCK YOU! That's why! Fuck you, you brain rotting fanatics, you cangrenous tissue, necrotizing flesh, you mangled up cells . You'll forever be in debt to everyone right from toes till up your neck until you start explaining why you're selling fake and contrived dreams to young, naive and innocent people online, why you want them to munch on your butt while you're play pretending to be a manager, model, fashion designer, photographer, writer, therapist, why you're lying about your past and real abilities, why you're evading taxes, why you stole money from guillible individuals when they needed it most, why you gaslight and deceitfully manipulate your friends, why there's so much controversy around you, why your actions don't mach your words. Why you'll never tell the truth even if it were to lethally strangle you. Why having connections for better or for worse and bragging about them (as if she was the only one in the world with connections) to fuck knows who and what doesn't turn you into a no morals somebody from a nobody. Why you're covering for a bunch of nefarious repulsive death penalty worthy MOB asshats who deserve to be hammered, slammed, smashed and whacked, battered, pounded and pummeled to microscopic pieces untill not even the best coroner in the world can identify them by their contaminated DNA.
Even if they were to beg for attention crawling on the dirtiest carpet, even if they became the laughing stock of social media, even if they pleaded for forgiveness 24/7 7/7 28/28 29/29 30/30 31/31 365/365 366/366 till they kicked the bucket, what Jess, Renell and the others have done will not be erased from history.
Equal give and take my ass. STFU. Why are they even allowed to have a say in basically everything right now? They shouldn't. Nobody asked for their opinions. Nobody wants to hear them talk. Nobody gives two shits about them. Their ramblings are as useful as a torn apart leaking urinal. If I wanted to hear Renell and Jess talk I'd not waste my time in them, I'd go listen on Youtube how clogged toilets sound. But I don't. I'm not interested in hearing anything remorely similar to those two wet farts. I don't want to stoop at their level. They can go fuck themselves with a splinter full wooden toilet plunger. And then film their deed with the lousiest, fakest, pro camera Chinese counterfeit knock off.
youtube

Just because she's holding some random ass cameras doesn't fucking mean she knows anything about photography. Who the fuck holds their cameras in such a careless way as if they were a cheap model who were told to play pretend they're this greatly awewome celebrity photographer? A camera should be firmly held while tightly strapped so it doesn't fall on the fucking ground and makes a mess out of itself while permanently damaging the sensor, its lens + its external flash. Most cameras do weigh a lot, so why would she be dangling it around like a pair of thongs?
She admitted she's doing for the gram. And doesn't know how to tell the difference between niche photography and her pseudo commercial and editorial bullshit. What is so special about her that celebrities flock like silly, stupid geese to her in order to have their photo taken with this thing when other photographers in the game spend thousands of dollars on their gear?
They're roughly 150-200 bucks per piece(camera + lens). Dirt cheap. About the same price a celebrity pays for their designer underwear.
The estimate for a comprehensive professional camera setup in a situation like this ranges from $10,000 to $30,000 or more. Additional expenses could raise the total cost to $50,000 or more.
Who the heck even post-processes her photos? Oh wait, it's the infamous non-existent legally dubious Ice Studios. She'd have been more credible if she at least wore that "I shoot RAW" tshirt all wannabe photographers wear to impress people left and right lol. And to think she's never been seen wearing her shop's clothes.....

Compare how scam photographer Renell is carelessly holding her expensive gear vs how real photographers actually do it.

Who the fuck gets paid to shoot spoiled ass rich clients without having a legally registered business? Why exactly her? Who' been paying for her to be featured in magazine interviews? What makes her so frikkin' special than the tons of others so similar to her? How did she earn all that fame and appreciation? Who the fuck even allowed Renell to speak when she's doing nothing but excellenting at wasting precious seconds away from the listeners' attention span. Who the fuck uses such a small bag for carrying around their camera when a decent looking photographer's bag must contain at least 3 or 4 of the following: additional batteries & charger, additional bodies and lenses & straps and harnesses, lens caps, lens hoods, lens filters, lens pouches, external flash or speedlight, portable ssd drive, portable light source, protective waterproof cover, remote shutter release, additional sd cards, ultrabook, lens cleaning kits or wipes. She and Jess are pretending to do whatever they're clearly failing to pretend at. Fucking lousy decrepit wankers.
No serious photographer crams any of the following in such a way their bag is indististinguishable from a sack of potatoes.
I can't believe their work is so terribly uninteresting and so unoriginal. If it hadn't been for their. They need to be thrown ASAP in a huge giant shipping container with this label on it:"Don't open till Rapture comes. Destination: Timbuktu or bust." The earlier, the better. Do they expect people won't take a harsh stand against this incredibly scheming waste of time duo? Do they think they can go on and on living their miserable life with their series of snake oil salesmen tactics? Do they think nobody's going to take a stand and put an end to their con?
And what about Jamie Campbell Bower's role in this? Is he a voluntary participant in this fraud or is he being coerced?
They who dig a pit will fall into it.

Thinking about making my old starter DSLR into a videography camera and just setting it up on a tripod for events. The camera I use for photos is older and doesnt have video capabilities, but my starter camera is newer- has more features like video but sucks at ISO so I cant use it for anything poorly lit. But people somewhat expect video to be lower quality because they're used to low res phone cameras... mmm... thinky.

which phone model you use? your pics have gorgeous quality omg
I've got a Samsung s22 ultra :) honestly I have a lot of beef with the cameras/software on it. Samsung has some weird like post photo taking editing it does like it adds HDR and increases texture and shit often like, for instance, it makes flapjack look Extra Textured when he is Regular Textured in real life and looks Regular Textured in the photo preview. It also struggles to focus with the front camera in even slightly low light like just constantly refocuses when nothing is being moved to prompt it to need to.
sorry I know you didn't ask for a full review, but I honestly preferred my note 10+. I also know they've done AI kind of things without user permission/without a setting to turn it off with moon photos in particular and I don't think they've done away with that. which I don't care about that as a feature that can be turned off but uh, as someone who is very familiar with and comfortable with dslrs and photo editing and like having control of at LEAST the editing process, I wanna be able to turn it off.
so yeah I wouldn't recommend it unfortunately.

everything everywhere all at once 👀(<- pretend those are googly eyes)
the handmaiden
6. say three nice things about yourself (three physical and three non-physical).
i don't have 3 specific things about my body but i do like how my features fit together on my face even though im not conventionally attractive. i also like how my body looks when im not wearing my ugly mom-approved clothes and am just in my bra and jeans. it took a long time for me finally get here but i feel there's still a long way to go before i fully love my body. before i stop comparing myself to other people.
as for non-physical things: i like how i don't give a shit anymore lol. i'll see something that would have ruined my week a year ago and i delete/block and move on. i know i can achieve a lot academically if i really put my mind to it (burnout and depression sucks). and third thing, i think im a pretty optimistic person.
9. what calms you down?
watching travel vlogs/baking videos on youtube.
reading a good book/watching a good movie.

how i take moon photos, and how you can too using the same method (regular camera version)
long post
Tumblr media
ok so this is the first of a 2 part thing, one part (this part) will go over how i shoot moon photos with my regular photography camera and the other part will go over how i make larger mosaics with a telescope.
this is a method i've developed over the past 6 months, mainly for getting the most i can out of just a telephoto lens.
going to start by going over the equipment you need/the equipment i use for this:
a basic dslr/mirrorless camera. i use the nikon Z5, but it doesn’t matter which one really. it helps if it can shoot video at full resolution.
a telephoto lens, on a crop sensor camera it should be at least 200mm (and on a full frame, 300mm is preferable). i use a nikon F/4.5-5.6 70-300mm.
a tripod. this is really basic, any tripod works, it’s pretty much irrelevant as long as you have one.
that’s all the equipment you need, to take shots like this:
Tumblr media
yes, you can do this with a regular nikon and telephoto lens. i took this with the gear stated above, using the processes i will now describe below.
alright so the first step is what i call gathering data.
this is when you’re actually outside shooting, all the images you’ll need for later processing. assuming the conditions are ok (meaning the moon is out, not blocked by clouds and isn’t right on the horizon), i go out and set up the gear.
during this period of time i’m trying to get 1 thing, but if the moon is full; 2, possibly 3 things.
the first thing is your main moon data. depending on whether you have a camera that can record in higher resolution, this can take the form of either recording a video or snapping a bunch of single shots (if you do the latter, make sure to use an inbuilt intervalometer if the camera has one. or get a regular one if you don't, it's a big help)
i usually do a 10 minute recording, which is about how long it takes the moon to move across my camera frame. at 30fps, this equates to about 18,000 frames.
the point of recording isn't to have a video, but mainly to 𝘯𝘰𝘵 have 18,000 individual photos. a video is just a concise way of producing and containing a TON of images really easily.
so you took a video, or depending on your camera you took a bunch of images, that's the first part done.
remember how i said, if there's a full moon or closer to it, i'm trying to get 2-3 things here? that's for me personally, because i often shoot composites during a full moon. skip this next part if you don't plan on that.
for reference, here's a composited vs non-composited version
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now the second thing i want to get is my composite shot. it's only feasible during a close to full moon, because otherwise the edge in shadow will always look weird with the glow added. the composite shot itself is usually a few overexposed images (all at slightly different settings), to show the moon's glow and/or sometimes a few bright stars.
typically i just change the settings around, and shoot like 5-10 different exposures manually, but exposure bracketing could probably work too here. i haven't tried it.
as long as you can't see any features on the moon, and the sky around it is noticeably brightened, you're good in terms of exposure. just make sure the edge of the moon is still visible, that's necessary for compositing later.
if there are any nice clouds out, i also try to wait and get a few shots with those near the moon.
the third optional thing (still under compositing, keep skipping if you aren't) is taking a shot or two of the blank sky with stars, to composite a shot like this:
Tumblr media
this is a very quick thing, just point your camera somewhere away from the moon where you see a few stars, and take a couple second exposure to bring them out. you can zoom out more than whatever you're at for the moon shot to get some more stars, or keep it the same. either way works.
alright now we're back to the main part of the guide.
you've got your moon data at this point, your equipment is brought in, now you just have to do the processing.
with this method most of the work is the processing, i'll try to cover it all quickly here
firstly you need to process the main moon data. all i have is a video at this point, i need to turn that into a real finished image
doing this processing requires a couple programs (most of which are windows-only), but are all 100% free. if you intend on doing moon photography often, i would recommend getting a very cheap windows laptop for this purpose. quality doesn't matter whatsoever.
the first program i use is called PIPP (planetary image preprocesser), and this is mainly used to get your video in a state where it can be processed.
i typically upload the video, set it to crop every frame right around the moon (all that black space is extra processing time!), sort the frames by quality and cut out maybe 50% or 75% but this depends on how many frames i took. in my case of 18k, this cuts me down to 9k or 5k or so.
the resulting, processed video (once again using video as an image holding format because it's easy) is then exported to the next program: Autostakkert.
this one is to stack the images, into one really nice image. stacking is why i took so many images in the first place, i won't explain all the logistics of stacking here, but just know that it works and you should do it. stacking is one huge improvement you can make to your shots that's very easy to do.
so in autostakkert, i cull about 50% more of the frames, and stack the remainder of them.
personally i also drizzle 1.5x (drizzling = image upscaling basically) because on a 300mm telephoto lens and full frame camera, the moon is just not that many pixels. you can do whatever on this, if you're at 600mm or 800mm it's probably not as necessary, but it's really helpful at anything below that.
once it stacks, i take the resulting image into a third program: Registax.
this one i use for one sole purpose, wavelets. it's an optional step, and once again i will not explain in any detail how they work, but the result is basically a good sharpening tool. like REALLY good. i recommend trying it.
it's a simple program, i just upload the image and then change the wavelet sliders until it's sharpened to a nice degree.
and lastly, i export that image over to a regular photo editor. photoshop if you have it, lightroom works too only if you aren't compositing, i personally use photopea which is a very nice photoshop clone website that's free. look it up.
what i do here is just basic photo editing stuff first, expand the crop and add black (remember, in my case the stacked image was cropped all the way in), sharpen it a little more, up the saturation maybe for mineral colors, etc.
in here i also usually upscale the image again, this is optional
if you did not intend on compositing, and don't care how i do it, you're done! you should have a very passable moon shot at the moment, or if you're just reading out of curiousity, a very passable understanding of how i take them.
Tumblr media
if you do care, here's the process:
so firstly i bring up the final cropped and finished edit of the main moon in the photo editor, and the composite shot on another layer above it. lower the opacity, then line up/resize the glow moon with the regular moon.
next you basically just get a low opacity/low hardness eraser, and erase the center of the glow moon so the regular surface detail shows through in the middle, but the edges stay glowy- and then i increase opacity back to full again.
it can take a few tries and messing around to get this part to look right, but making sure they're lined up perfectly is half the battle.
now you have a composited full moon, that looks something like this!
Tumblr media
whether you're using it as a guide with your own shots (if so, good luck on them!) or just wanted to know how i take them, i hope you enjoyed the guide; i like to be transparent with how i make stuff, especially with something like this where most people have no idea how the photo is created behind the scenes.
- all the photos in this post were taken solely on my nikon Z5 camera, F/4.5-5.6 70-300mm lens and tripod.
- part 2 for the telescope mosaics will be coming in the near future most likely
