In the 3rd Chapter of my own book, LISTENING TO HER OWN VOICE, Monica Kerker (author's great grandmother), decided her skill as a seamstress might help her parents to save and purchase a new home in Chaska for the family. She applied for a job at Kunz's dressmakers and was hired immediately after Monica showed Gertie Kunz a skirt she'd made. Monica was in awe of the vast amount of fabric in the store. More inspiring, was the sewing machine. Pictured here, is a sewing machine of the era. Rare in homes at the time, Monica dreamed of owning one for herself someday. “Horrors of captivity for 14 hours in the hands of kidnappers were recounted by Mrs. Nell Donnelly, top picture, who is head of a $3,000,000 Kansas City, Mo., dress concern, when the trial of four alleged abductors started in that city on May 2. Mrs. Donnelly was kidnapped from the driveway of her home with her chauffeur, driven to a lonely farmhouse outside of the city and held for $75,000 ransom. She says the kidnappers, after threatening to blind her, became afraid and took her back to the city, where she was freed. Two of the alleged kidnappers who will stand trial are shown in insets. Right is William Lacy Browning, farmer, and left is Paul Scheidt, dairyman. The two others who will be tried are Mrs. Ethel Depew and Charles Mele. Mrs. Depew's husband, suspected of complicity in the kidnapping plot is still at large.”
