VW Draisine Klv 20-5026
at the railway museum in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. A VW bus as a track test vehicle on rails from 1955. How do you turn such a bus on rails? A hydraulic lifting stamp makes it possible. Lift, turn the bus by 180 degrees, then lower it, jump in the bus and drive back in the opposite direction.
Thanks to good care, this pretty museum piece is still fully functional today.

Draisine - One of the forerunners of the bicycle is being exhibited in Heidelberg
The “wooden horse”, also called Laufmaschine, was invented by Karl Freiherr von Drais around 1820 and is powered by the rider’s feet on the ground instead of the pedals of later bicycles. The first Laufmaschine was invented by the German inventor in Mannheim in 1817 and then patented in France in February 1818 using the term vélocipède. The Draisine named after Karl von Drais is displayed in the…

Santana makes me go "aww poor baby" all the damn time. It's like finding a cat outside when it rains, you just want to bundle them in blankets and pat their head, saying everything is going to be okay. I feel the need to take care of them so bad!
Tumblr media
Lmao 😂 You two anons sharing the same thought. That is Santana’s ultimate and strongest ability indeed ☺️ Now, I feel a bit bad for making Santana so pitiable 🥺😆
Also, just sharing this meme that Draisin, a member of my Discord server made about Santana 😂

Are there any remains of the old line
Tumblr media
"Apart from the section of the line we're running on, there is also a small rebuilt part at Skulerud, which was our end station back in the day. The loading crane on the dock is still there, as well as the engine shed which serves as a cafe during summer. They also have draisins down there and they have laid down new tracks now to recreate what once were. Some stations are also preserved here and there, most are regular houses today, as well as the watertower at Bjørkelangen station. The shed at Bjørkelangen has been repurposed as a garage for buses today. Finstadbru station is also being refurbished and new tracks has been laid down there, but they don't have any or the original rolling stock there, the have bought a Russian shunting diesel which has no historical ties to our railway, so I don't know what's going on down there. And if you walk through the forest along what used to be our line you can find shacks and sometimes abandoned carriages. So there is still remains of our line scattered around, but most of the rails has been broken up."

Why do the funnels of the Steam engines flare out so much? It looks like a spark arrestor but the only steam engines I know with those burn wood, or work in . . . Delicate (explosive) job sites. So why do you have them?
Tumblr media
"Those are indeed spark arrestors. Even if we mostly burn coal these days, we were sometimes forced to run on wood during bad times back in the day. But the main reason is that our line used to run through densely forested areas, and it is a precaution to not cause any forest fires. The summers here in Norway can also be extremely dry, so better safe than sorry, I guess. At the worst drought periods, there used to be a guy following the train on a draisine to put out any fires we might cause, because even with spark arrestors we can drop embers, and that can be fatal. A small fire can become huge in a dry spruce forest on a windy day... Wouldn't a steam engine working in an explosive area have be a fireless steam engine by the way? As any kind of fire would be a too big of a risk... I doubt a spark arrestor would be sufficient under those conditions."
