Just found out there's a rugby team in France named Catalans Dragons.. 😳

It's the rugby team from Perpinyà, the capital city of Northern Catalonia. The team's colours are the colour of the Catalan flag and the team's anthem is Els segadors, the anthem of Catalonia.

Northern Catalonia has suffered a very strong ethnocide at the hands of France. The French public school system, media, government, etc has been discriminating them and repressing them for over a century in a very psychological way as well as beating children for speaking Catalan. This results in a population that has to fight with extreme amounts of self-hatred, and where many families have stopped passing down Catalan to their children because they are so ashamed of it, that they think their children will have a better future if they're not tainted by this "inferior" language. In this context, Dragons Catalans and USAP are a place to express Catalanity and come together as a community (like Barça was for Southern Catalans during the Franco dictatorship).

Voyage Espagne 2023 - Jour 5 : Montblanc et Cambril

Nous restons dans les vieilles pierres aujourd’hui encore avec le village de Montblanc. Rien à voir avec les Alpes, ni avec la crème au chocolat. C’est une ville fortifiée qui possède encore ses remparts tout autour de la ville. Au centre, c’est un mélange de bâtiments de toutes les époques.

On fait déjà le tour de la ville en suivant les remparts puis nous déambulons dans les petites ruelles. Il y a plusieurs grandes places, des fontaines, des églises et des places fortes. Et puis il y a la légende du dragon. Et on dit merci Google lens trad parce que sinon je serai toujours à me demander c’est quoi le délire avec les dragons dans ce patelin. 

Depuis longtemps, un dragon terrorisait les environs de Montblanc. Il dévorait les animaux jusqu’au point de menacer un jour l’intégrité des habitants de la ville. Pour éviter que la bête n’attaque, on décida de lui livrer un habitant, tiré au sort parmi la population, et ce y compris la famille royale. Le destin voulut qu’un jour ce soit la princesse qui fut désignée. Alors que le dragon s’approchait d’elle pour la dévorer, un cavalier apparut et frappa le dragon à mort : c’était Saint-Georges. Un rosier de roses rouges poussa là où s’était répandu le sang du dragon. Depuis, la tradition catalane veut que les hommes offrent une rose rouge en cadeau à leur bien-aimée.

Voilà pour la version courte. J’ai vu le chevalier, par contre j’ai pas vu le dragon.

Nous sommes ensuite montés au point de vue dominant la ville et les alentours. Puis nous sommes descendus par les petites ruelles.

Quand soudain, à 12h pétante, des coups de canons retentirent, puis des feux d’artifice. On s’est dépêchés d’aller vers l’origine de tout ce boucan : la place principale. Et là une procession se préparait avec une fanfare, un cheval doté de tambours sur lesquels sa cavalière tapait. Suivaient des enfants coiffés de têtes énormes et horribles, et, en queue de cortège, deux immenses effigies du roi et de la reine portés par deux hommes. J’ai rien compris, c’était flippant, on a été boire un coup dans un bar.

Nous sommes ensuite allés à Cambrils pour manger au bord du port. J’ai pris une paella (pire paella que j’ai mangé de ma vie) et, en dessert, LA TARTA DE LA MUERTE CON CHOCOLATE. Non mais c’est le vrai nom de ce gâteau au chocolat. J’ai compris le nom quand j’ai voulu me lever de ma chaise à la fin du repas. Une envie de crever tellement j’avais le bide lourd. Je commence à me dire qu’il y a une thématique dans ce voyage : on est passés par le pont d’enfer à la frontière, j’ai marché le long du sentier du diable, maintenant le gâteau de la mort… 

Et puis nous passons une tête au port pour aller chercher les informations pour une prochaine activité… mais pas de spoil !

Correfoc, Catalan tradition as part of the festa major (local festivities) where the local dragon figures and Devils’ Dance are joined by the dragons/bestiary and devils from other towns and cities. The correfoc is usually held in the evening or early night, when they all dance on the streets lighting their firecrackers.

Each dance has their own musicians: the devils are accompanied by drums, and the dragons or other bestiary figures by drums and gralles (traditional Catalan wind instrument).

What’s st.Jordi day? Is it similar to Valentine’s Day in the US?

oh anon, it's so much more! it's el dia més bonic de l'any (the most beautiful day of the year!) it's the celebration of sant jordi (saint george) who is the patron saint of catalunya and is held on 23 april every year. i wrote in an earlier post that while we are not particularly religious people, celebrating religious traditions and honouring the saints are a big part of spanish culture. sant jordi is especially very important to barcelona and catalunya, so the day is celebration of love but it's also a celebration of catalan culture and why you see so many senyera decorations (catalan flag) and roses everywhere. barça changed its logo (see below) for today too.

the symbols of sant jordi are the rose, the book, and the dragon. if you know the legend of sant jordi slaying the dragon, then that's where that reference comes from. it's also why alexia putellas, lucy bronze and other barça players shared the image of the famous gaudí house, casa batlló.

gaudí is like the most famous architect in spain and he designed the sagrada familia cathedral and so many places in bcn. he also designed this house as an homage to sant jordi and it kinda looks like dragon scales from the outside. that is why they decorate it with roses every year and there are actually book stalls nearby too. if you visit barcelona, this is a must visit location. it's beautiful and unique and worth the price.

the rose symbol came about during the 15th century in barcelona where they held a lover's fair, and it became a tradition for men to give women a rose on this day, which is why people compare it to valentine's day. later on the 1920s barcelona created a book festival and held it on 23 april (supposedly the death date of cervantes and shakespeare). then it became a tradition for men to give the women they love a rose and women to give men a book (this includes family members too!) now we don't stick to these strict gender norms anymore, so most people get both roses and books. ☺️

that's the reason why aitana re-released an updated version of her memoir and held a signing today.

so i think this day holds a lot more importance in spain than maybe valentine's day in america (for example i don't think you all celebrate saint valentine in the same way in the us.) btw, we also celebrate valentine's day (el día de san valentín) in spain just like they do in many places around the world on 14 feb, but it's not that big a deal. like halloween it feels like something we took from america and is an excuse to have a party or go have a nice dinner 🤷‍♀️
