Death has come to me, kissed me on my cheek, gave me closure
Immortal by design, I'll be meeting you here every time
Back from the dead
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry guys. I had to put some demons to sleep real quick. In the process I fell in love with a ghost, delusions, energy leeches, and a burden masked as a soul connection. Oh and I was trapped in the spiritual realm by this demon who was super into my wings, fucking weirdo.
Anyways!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Universe has blessed me with isolation. My circle is small and cozy now.
I’m not gonna lie, the way most of my past connections ended left me heartbroken and sometimes literally beaten 💔
I don’t wish any harm on y’all, but you made the decision to burn that bridge. You made your bed now sleep in it, slobber in it! It’s so funny how y’all keep coming back and I still don’t hear a sincere apology.
Please stay away with your negative vibes ✋ get help.
But if you really want to be lurking and keep up with me then…
Welcome to The Motherfucking Kassie Show 💜
Here you’ll find me glowing the fuck up! And dissing you because this is my blog and I’ll write whatever the fuck I want.
But yeah you can always find me here 🤗 not in your DMs, not watching your story, not asking about your dumbass, and certainly not at your front door. YOU will find ME here ✨ because that’s all the access you have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t make everyone happy ✨
I’m just one of me 🖤 I can’t split myself into twos, threes, fours…
You don’t own me. I belong to myself and myself only.
If there is something I want you to take from all of this it’s self-love.
✨🌕✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Wednesday April 5th 2023 at 11:34 pm we had a Pink Libra Full Moon super charged with the essence of death and endings. I hope you all used this time wisely by cleansing and releasing what no longer serves you.
I sacrificed my every day journal/scrapbook/book of shadows and threw it into my Full Moon fire. I thought, I don’t longer think the same so I shouldn’t hold onto it. Shrug. Rough draft.
🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰💛🐰
Happy Easter my bunnies 💕
Repeat after me
I herby decree that my aura and chakras be cleaned and made pure
I herby decree that my soul and essence be cleaned and pure
I herby decree that my energy and power belong to only me
I call back my energy
I call back my power
I call back all that belongs to me. Anything that is no longer serving my best and higher purpose, I call back to me right now.
I demand peace for my soul
Repeat that shit every morning and every night before your pretty little eyes close for the day 💋
And!
I hope you’re setting those boundaries and walking in your true power. Claim it all because you’re going to need every drop where we’re going 🙃
👸🏻🤍
End Credits:
I wanna thank my coworkers for encouraging me to keep the series alive.
I wanna thank my cute dealer for being there through the ups and downs. You’re a real one 💚
I wanna thank my cat for doing the vibration thing that triggers the happy cells in my brain 🤓😺
I wanna thank the Universe for this glow baaaybeeeeee 😈

[ID: a greyscale banner of a skeleton reclining in rich silks, cropped so only the ribcage and part of the spine are visible. It reads ‘A Year in the Priory’ in white. /End ID.]
I saw a post going around by @maguayans about making a year-in-review post, and it looked too fun for me to resist!
It hasn’t quite been an entire year for me. I started this account on January 18th, but the time has flown right by! I think it’s good to reflect, and this is the time of year for it, that’s for sure. I didn’t want to do it Spotify-style, so here we are. Just the bare bones.
On Writing
This year really marks the start of my taking my work as a writer much more seriously. It was also the first time I was paid for my writing (!!!). I opened commissions, although I only sold any to people I knew. I only published one piece of fanfiction this year, in January--just a little study of Silco and Jinx from Arcane. But I have a couple others that I’ve been fiddling with to keep me loose that I might even finish one day. In April, my husband and I launched our Patreon, and as of this month, we’ve released nine volumes of The Bishop of Black with a 10th on the way! We managed to put out a new volume every month, along with bonus side-stories. I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together. In the summer, I came down with some terrible Gorr the Butcher brainrot, but the fic isn’t finished. It is, if I do say so myself, rather good, though. I also immediately became obsessed with Alchemy of Souls, but that fic isn’t finished either. I haven’t had an awful lot of free time, just in general, this year. I’ve struggled to make dedicated time for my projects. This blog has also begun to grow quite well! I reached my first major milestone in October, did a very fun giveaway, and then smashed that milestone to absolute bits. This, I attribute chiefly to the miraculous accident of a post that I made at 2am escaping containment. I did make an attempt at pushing out a few more words in November, but came away with a little more than 5 000 on RAVENOT, which is more progress than I’ve made in some time. I also released a polished first chapter, which stands as a sort of pilot for the project. Some folx were even kind enough to drop a little tip in my jar for it, which was lovely. I did get some little drabbles out, too. So I think I’ve been sneaking out the words fairly well this year. And that’s about it for 2022, as far as my writing goes. I wasn’t able to really get back to my bookmaking, but I’m getting pretty handy with Affinity Publisher and that’s got to count for something.
On the Future
I’d like to try to commit to a few things for 2023. Here’s the list: + complete a draft of one WIP for 2023 (spoiler alert: it’s going to be RAVENOT) + read every day + dedicate time to writing every week (collaboratively, and solo) + consistently include IDs for images in original posts + get back to bookmaking! I’ve been making nothing but x-folds and pamphlet stitches and it’s making me wilt
On Meetings
And I do want to shout out some of the wonderful members of this here writeblr community that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this year. Warmest regards to: @flowerprose @muddshadow @pinespittinink @impaledlotus @inkspellangel and @calicojackofficial for being some of the highlights of my dash! And of course, I must give mention to those I know and love already: @rosieartsie and @magefaery <3
On Reading
I did manage to get a fair bit of reading in this year, all things considered. I would’ve liked to read more, but there’s been a lot for me to adapt to this year. Here’s the list (the ones I especially liked get an asterisk*):
Dune, Frank Herbert They Both Die at the End, Adam Silvera When No One is Watching, Alyssa Cole Manhunt, Gretchen Felker-Martin* Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor, Xiran Jay Zhao* Entangled Life, Merlin Sheldrake* The Time Traveller’s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger* A Dowry of Blood, S. T. Gibson* Nothing but Blackened Teeth, Cassandra Khaw Blood Scion, Deborah Falaye Terciel and Elinor, Garth Nix Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, Nona the Ninth*, Tamsyn Muir Woom, Duncan Ralston Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, Eric Larocca manga Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost (1-5), Kaori Yuki* Jujutsu Kaisen (up-to-date), Gege Akutami* Boku no Hero Academia (up-to-date), Kohei Horikoshi Kimetsu no Yaiba (1-23), Koyoharu Gotouge Kaiju No. 8 (up-to-date), Naoya Matsumoto* Chainsaw Man (up-to-date), Tatsuki Fujimoto* Utena: After the Revolution, Chiho Saito JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (part 1), Hirohiko Araki
And that’s all, really. I wonder where we’ll be this time next year.

Me writing book 1: Hmm seems like this book is gonna do good maybe it'll be my breakthrough. But just this one book I don't wanna go to crazy.
Me in August 2023 writing the 5th book in the series knowing damn well I'm gonna be writing a 6th right afterward: Ok where did these other plotlines and ideas come from what the fuck brain
In short, F&S started as a small little project and now it's turned into my writing breakthrough that 2022 me would've thrown out the window in 2 seconds flat.
2023 me both questions how I got here and is proud asf that I got here
Thanks for whoever on Tumblr supports me on AO3
Anyways, AVM quote for the series:
Purple in book 1: Ok let me just stop my dad and not get anymore trauma than that.
Purple in book 5: IS THE TRAUMA OVER YET?!?
Me: No.
Purple: JUST KILL ME ALREADY
Me: The near death is one thing and I've already done that
Purple: WHY WASN'T IT PERMANENT!?!?
Me: Your my protagonist. You have plot armor.
Purple: Omg you actually believe in that.
Me: KING'S SEEN ENOUGH I CAN'T JUST DO THAT TO HIM-
(The reason Purple has somehow survived: Plot armor)

2023, The 10th Year Of Press.Exe
New Post has been published on PRESS.exe: 2023, The 10th Year Of Press.Exe
Hey, it’s January! That’s an odd-numbered month, which means there’s not going to be a theme here. It’s also the start of the year and there’s going to be a bunch of stuff getting cleared out from 2022 so it’s not going to have a proper theme but it’ll definitely have something… themey.
What’s coming? Well:
February is a month of Smooches!
April is a month of Self Indulgence!
June is a month of Pride!
August is a month of Tricks!
October is a month of Dread!
December is a month of ‘Ween!
Then, each month, look forward to
A How To Be article talking about a character in 4th edition D&D
A worldbuilding article talking about building my setting of Cobrin’Seil, or building settings in general
At most one article on 3.5 D&D, one on 4e D&D
Each month I’ll show you at least one article on Magic: The Gathering, where I’ll show you this month’s daily custom cards, and well, we have a big special project for that, which we’ll talk more about soon.
An article talking about an OC, usually from City of Heroes, but hey, wide open world.
One piece of graphic design for a t-shirt, mask, or sticker
A story pile article each monday, with at least one anime a month (loose target)
A game pile article every friday, with at least one video a fortnight (harder target)
Each month I’m going to present at the end of the month, a summary of the game dev I’ve been doing that month, which is also going to be built out of articles posted on other social media spaces.
Ah.
Yes.
Other social media spaces.
You know, like Twitter, where I used to do this all the time.
I’m writing this back in December, of course. I don’t know what’s going on with Twitter. But I think it’s probably bad, and I think I’m enjoying not having to be on a space that predominantly is known for everyone on it screaming about how bad it is. So what I’m going to try and do going forward is do things like dev threads over on my Mastodon, which lets me do long-form threading with graphics, and search my own history. That’s what I really liked about what twitter gave me. I’ll also be presenting things on Cohost and Patreon to see what the audiences there want to say.
Basically, what you’ll find where:
Drafted article ideas where you can comment and give me direct suggestions where I’ll be able to meaningfully engage? Cohost.
Threads for showing ongoing progress on projects where I’m primarily taking notes on my own work? Mastodon.
Places for answering polls and questions about the game development I’m doing where you get to provide meaningful input into things I’m doing? Patreon.
Just the video articles? Youtube!
Each of these platforms is going to do a different job, and that’s important. I need to stop treating you as if you’re going to different sources for content firehoses. What I want you to do is come to my blog to look at the best of my material, and look at those other platforms as places you can go if you want more. This blog hosts articles. Those places are for social interaction, in different ways.
Particularly, this plays into the new way I’m approaching Brainstorm posts. Instead of having each month open with a post explaining that month’s game project, which can feel a bit like an open space, my intention is to present a link to the month’s brainstorming thread on Mastodon. Mastodon serves a purpose that the blog doesn’t necessarily, where it allows for lots of small additions, maintained in reverse chronological order, threaded on one another. At the start of each month, there’s going to be now, a post summarising that thread. This also stops cutting off a bit of extra time, where scheduling meant sometimes a month was more like three weeks of working on something rather than 31 days.
Below the fold, though, there’s some reflection on the history of this blog, why we have ten years of Press, and how I feel about realising this is now one of the longest ongoing projects I’ve ever had.
Goodness me
This blog started out as a byproduct of a change I wanted to make in my life when I was 29, turning 30. I realised that I’d spent my twenties trying things and starting a dozen projects but finishing nothing, which meant that all the ideas I had and all the concepts I was sure of had resulted in a lot of incomplete things. I’d had it in my head that I’d write a book or become a videogame maker or something like that. I felt, in the back of my mind, that I was always working on a thing, and any day now I’d make the thing.
I hadn’t.
I mean, there were things I made! I made things like a D&D setting and outlines of ideas, and D&D prestige classes and feats and magical items, I had been working on these small things but I’d never internalised that ‘small things’ and ‘big things’ were still just things. I mean I had a whole D&D setting, which one of my friends had printed out and put in a book, but that wasn’t a thing for people to read. It was a thing for me to be happy I had (which is noble enough on its own).
This blog is a thing that charts to my life, and now it charts to this particular period of my life. The year I turned 30, I made a plan. I would write one thing a week, a short story being the aim, and at the end of the year I would have 52 things that were made ‘together’ and that would count as a book. It had no option but to count as a book. Fox made this blog, which I think was her idea and it was a good one. Give me a place I had to put things, after a period where we once shared a blog on another site.
I wrote that first book. I’ve told this story before – about midway through the year I realised just how much I wanted a plan, how I wanted structure. I was using the blog in a very random way, and there’s probably a bunch of stuff back there that’s a big bad or meanspirited in ways I’d probably not be wild about now. I think I should keep things up, generally speaking, to make sure I’m accountable for things I said and so that if I did something that deserves an apology, I can actually do that. But I did write that book, The Sixth Age Of Sand.
It’s not great. I mean I like some of the ideas in it a lot, I like the way that it built bits of a world. I kind of like the idea of how a modern setting becomes a magical setting, with the idea of it being like buildups and thresholds and I liked the idea that the previous civilisation that we never knew about on earth was entirely made up of crabs.
In the November of that year, of my first year of university, while studying for my first exams, I wrote my first book for Nanowrimo – I wrote Immortal Engine, which was much smaller, tighter, and built out of a burning desire to finish a story that I could make with a structure. I like that book, not because it’s amazing writing or because it’s very good, but because it was my first book, and that book required a world that then became the setting for my next book, One Stone.
One Stone is a book that even now I’m proud of.
When I started this blog, I started making this blog because I imagined I would become a videogame journalist who wrote books on the side. Those were two things I liked, a lot, conceptually. Still kinda do. But what happened along the way was being believed in by teachers, and guided by friends and enabled by an audience. To shift from I think games doing this are bad to the next level of well why don’t I do things differently to suddenly… there are games. We made games. We made games, because again, Fox has been instrumental to this.
It’s been a weird few years. I became a game maker. I grappled with the challenges of self-identity. I started a youtube channel, because I was intrigued by the different ways you could use video to explain ideas. I acquired a stalker at one point. I got a dog! I progressed through multiple types of conceptual rage and started writing about my material conditions. I became an anarchist, which I’m still cautious about saying because I’m afraid the boss of anarchism will find me and yell at me for saying it and I know that’s dumb.
There’s a sort of soppy inclusivity that internet content creation wants to induce you to, the ‘we’ did it, you did it with me, you, the reader, you helped, and you totally did! I really like to imagine that someone is reading what I have to say, and that alone is enough to make sure I do it. I remember someone letting me know they laughed at something I said about Touhou predating Dark Souls and…
I smile.
I throw a lot of words out there and they wouldn’t be here if not for Fox. I press post because I imagine my audience, I visualise people who are interested in the kinds of things I want to talk about in the way I want to talk about them and bless, some of you are out there and have found it.
This blog does give me stressful nights sometimes, when I feel I haven’t done enough, written enough, worked enough for the Patreon dollars I receive, and the inherent anxiety of knowing the Queue Hungers. but I still love this feeling, this moment, when I’m able to bring my focus to bear, and let words spill.
Thank you for showing up, and thank you for telling me what you think about what I do.
Hey, wanna know why the blog is called press.exe?
I’ll tell you at some point this year.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

Annual Membership Assessments - Members Past Due (over a year or more)
Certified letters were mailed to members past due by a year or more on February 10th
Full and partial payments have been received by some members past due
Secondary letter will be sent before official enforcement in April.
Update to By-Laws - Status regarding update to by-laws related to short-term rentals
A call will be made to our attorney this week to ensure by-laws have been updated with Mason County.  Once we have approval, the Board will distribute new copies of the by-laws to all community members.
Update on Caldervin Creek Dredging
The dredging being performed on the creek, has been done under an emergency permit.
At this time, the dredging is complete under the conditions of the emergency permit
Future dredging is now in the hands of DNR to complete.
4. New Business
Annual Membership Dues - Members who are late in paying current year assessment
A motion was made to approve sending a letter to community members who have not yet paid or only made partial payments for the 2023/2024 dues.
Board votes unanimously to send letter including late fee for failing to pay timely.
Credit Card Payment Option for Annual Membership Dues
Some members have indicated they do not have checks and would like to pay with a credit card
We are not currently set up to authorize credit card payments
The Board has decided that we will not move forward with credit card payments.  There are fees associated with credit card payments and it becomes more cumbersome for the Treasurer to track these payments including passing along the associated fees for the credit card transaction to the member.
Late Fee for Annual Membership Dues
The Board would like to raise the late fee to $25 for members failing to pay Annual Membership Dues timely.
Board will research if this is a by-law change or a motion that can be made/approved by the Board.
Northwest Water Systems - CCR Annual Water Survey
Northwest Water Systems will be performing the Consumer Confidence Reports for our water system.
Once we receive the survey, the Board will be responsible for relaying the results to the community.
Plan for re-opening of the park - May
Open bathrooms
Return dock
We many need a permit to clean off the boat ramp - Board will look into this before we address this area.
Community Park Clean-up/Picnic will take place on April 27th 9:00-Noon with a BBQ following (Community Club will provide hamburgers/hot dogs, potato salad, chips).  We will ask the community to bring additional sides.
Board will draft communication regarding the clean-up/picnic and send out at the beginning of April.
Plan date for Annual Membership Meeting and Community picnic
Annual Membership Meeting will take place on June 23rd from Noon until 4pm.  John Stockwell will run the meeting, as Brock and Sara will be out of town.

Demon Slayer
Tumblr media
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (鬼滅の刃, Kimetsu no Yaiba, "Cutting edge of Devil Destruction") is a Japanese manga series composed and delineated by Koyoharu Gotouge. It was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Week after Week Shōnen Hop from February 2016 to May 2020, with its parts gathered in 23 tankōbon volumes. It has been distributed in English by Viz Media and at the same time by Shueisha on their Manga In addition to stage. It follows high school Tanjiro Kamado, who endeavors to turn into a Demon Slayer after his family is butchered and his more youthful sister, Nezuko, is transformed into a devil.
A 26-episode anime TV series variation created by Ufotable circulated from April to September 2019. A spin-off film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Film: Mugen Train, was delivered in October 2020 and turned into the most elevated-earning anime film and Japanese film ever. An 18-episode second time of the anime series circulated from October 2021 to February 2022 while a gathering film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Town, was delivered in February 2023. An 11-episode third season circulated from April to June 2023. A fourth season has likewise been declared.
By February 2021, the manga had north of 150 million duplicates available, including advanced renditions, making it the 10th smash hit manga series ever. Likewise, it was the top-of-the-line manga in 2019 and 2020. Both the manga and its anime transformation have gotten basic recognition. The anime series has gotten various honors and is viewed as one of the most amazing anime of the 2010s. In 2020, the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba establishment created an expected yearly deals income of ¥1 trillion ($8.75 billion), becoming one of the greatest netting media establishments ever.
Creation
After Gotouge's manga, Haeniwa no Crisscross, distributed Week after week by Shōnen Hop in 2015, neglected to turn into a serialized work, Tatsuhiko Katayama, Gotouge's most memorable manager, recommended Gotouge to begin a series with a "straightforward theme". Gotouge's presentation work Kagarigari would turn into the reason for an underlying draft, named Kisatsu no Nagare (鬼殺の流れ) since it had ideas like blades and devils, which would be recognizable to the Japanese audience. Be that as it may, because of its serious tone, absence of entertainment, and dim story, this draft was not acknowledged for serialization. So, Katayama requested that Gotouge take a stab at composing a more brilliant, more ordinary person in the equivalent setting. The first title was Kisatsu no Yaiba (鬼殺の刃), yet they felt the person "satsu" (殺, lit. "kill") in the title was excessively plain.
Even though it is a made-up word, "Himitsu" (鬼滅) appeared straightforward, so Gotouge figured it would be intriguing to shorten the series' title like that; "Saiba" (刃, lit. "edge") suggests a Japanese sword. As per Gotouge, the series' three greatest impacts are JoJo's Odd Experience, Naruto, and Bleach. Tatsuhiko Katayama, a manager of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, has said in interviews that the red-haired, scar-confronted Tanjiro was motivated by Rurouni Kenshin, a 1990s manga about a likewise drawn fighter, Himura Kenshin.

Draft 1: Complete.
Began writing Book 5 on December 21st 2021
Finished first draft May 7th 2023
Finished editing first draft December 10th, 2023
Book 5 of the Recovery series (my 8th book written since 2004) was, again, a book I didn't fully intend to write when I set off into this series back in 2013. I'd originally planned this series to be three books based off a short story I wrote in my Creative Writing course in college. But here we are, 5 books in of 8 now planned.
With the chopping of original ending and slicing and dicing Book 1 (Embassy, 2013) by a full 50%, it grew into a very different story, one not full of aliens and interstellar wars, but the wonders and pangs of humanity's expansion to new planets two thousand years after the desolation of Earth.
Book 2 (Resonance, 2014) was originally meant to take place 18 years after Book 1, but ended up being a continuation of the new story, all leading up to those pages I'd chopped off and held onto for two years.
Book 3 (Perihelid, 2017) was originally what Book 4 ended up becoming in some ways. A loose version of the story, at least. The Book 3 I ended up with was a direct continuation picking up mere seconds after the end of Book 2, and coming full circle for the main character's arc.
Book 4 (Belvun, 2021) was born from the scraps of original Book 3. With a fully fleshed out plot spiralling toward ultimate disruption of balance among humanity's inhabited worlds, Book 4 ended up with a vastly different tone from the first three books, written from fresh new perspectives covering both political and civilian spheres.
And now, Book 5 (due for release October 2024 or April 2025) continues and concludes the story of Book 4, setting fire to the balance humanity has maintained. This destruction will set the stage for the concluding three installments, Books 6-8, which I will write between 2024 (?) and 2040.
Come January 2024, I'll input these edits, and then it all starts again (this time, only on the computer! Every first draft I write is on paper, though).
The next step from here is a break.
To all our endeavors.

Update - Violins and Violets - 10th April 2023
Hello, friends!
Inside the Writing Process - Part 8 - The First Chapter
I’m pleased to find myself redrafting “Violins and Violets” at last. I haven’t written very much this month at all; it’s been a sad one and I haven’t really been in the mood to write. I’ve managed to get lots of crochet done, though, and I’ve nearly finished the blanket I’m working on, so I’m trying to look on the bright side there.
Last night I sat down and studied the first chapter of one of my favourite books, “The Lost Daughter”, by Gill Paul, to see how it’s constructed and what information the opening scenes give us about the protagonist, Maria.
I made a list of all the basic concepts - “description of location, exterior; description of location, interior; emotional response to location; flashback to happier time,“ and so on - and started putting together my own first chapter for “Violins and Violets”, following the same kind of structure.
I know exactly where I want the story itself to go, and I’ll probably be reusing a lot of text from the older drafts, but I want to add more to the beginning, so that the readers can get to know Katharina better before the inciting incident. I really struggle to write the first scene if it’s not “in media res”, and the “in media res” approach doesn’t quite work for “Violins and Violets”.
One of the reasons I love Gill Paul’s work so much is that her books always pull you right into the character’s inner life, make you feel like you’ve known them forever, and then throw chaos into the mix at just the right moment. Her pacing is spectacular, and that’s something I want to emulate in my writing!
I ended up with 40 beats for the opening scene, some fleshing out Maria’s character, others fleshing out the supporting characters, some describing the current setting, others showing the difference between how things used to be and how things are now. I’ve been ticking them off as I’ve been fulfilling them for my own opening scene - not necessarily in order - and I’ve just checked to see how many I did in last night’s writing session of 1,000 words - 12/40 - so I’m nearly a third of the way through.
The specifics are very different, of course, because I’m not writing a book about the Romanovs, but I am writing a book about a young woman alone with her parents after a big change has occured. Maria’s siblings are elsewhere, Katharina’s brother has just left for a tour of Europe, and everyone feels a bit lost. The dynamic isn’t dissimilar, so I thought the first chapter of “The Lost Daughter” would be a good one to study. It’s about 1,500 words long, and I think mine’s going to end up a bit longer (I’m going to stop myself if I go over 3,000 words!), but I can always shrink it down if I need to.
I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this draft goes, and I’ll probably be posting a few “Inside the Writing Process” articles as I work on it!

The coronavirus pandemic will have a significant impact on NFL training camps and, at the rate things are going, likely will be a story well into the regular season. But as the Vikings’ prepare for their entire roster to report to camp on Tuesday at TCO Performance Center in Eagan, general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer also are going to have to focus on actual football matters. Zimmer, who received a three-year contract extension last week that will run through 2023, is entering his seventh season in Minnesota and is looking to lead his team to its fourth playoff berth in that time. So what are some issues Zimmer and his coaching staff must deal with before the regular season opens? Let’s take a look at five pressing topics facing the offense in the first of a two-part series. GARY’S IN CHARGE After firing first-year offensive coordinator John DeFilippo with three games left in the 2018 season, Zimmer brought in longtime NFL offensive coordinator and head coach Gary Kubiak as a senior offensive advisor and paired him with assistant Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski was considered the coordinator and called the plays, but there was no doubt it was Kubiak’s offense that quarterback Kirk Cousins was running. Zimmer, who a year earlier had been frustrated that DeFilippo had frequently abandoned the run game, was pleased with the results as the Vikings jumped from 30th to sixth in the NFL in rushing offense, 19th to eighth in points and 20th to 16th in yards. Cousins’ career-high passer rating of 107.4 was fourth in the league and his six interceptions were the fewest he had thrown in an NFL season as a starter. Cousins’ 26 touchdowns were tied with Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes for the eighth most in the league. While the Vikings’ offensive line had some issues in pass protection, Cousins’ sack total did drop from 40 in 2018 to 28 in 2019 with Kubiak’s scheme in place. The run game featured Dalvin Cook, who rushed for 1,135 yards (10th in the NFL) on 250 carries, a 4.5-yard average, and 13 touchdowns in a career-high 14 games. Cook also caught 53 passes for 519 yards. a 9.8 average. The Vikings’ success on offense helped to land Stefanski the head coaching job in Cleveland, meaning the soon-to-be 59-year-old Kubiak will move from offense advisor to coordinator this season. So how much will change? “Offensively it’s not going to change hardly at all,” Zimmer said on a video conference call Saturday. “Gary was very, very influential in everything that we went about offensively. I’m not trying to take anything away from Kevin, but it was basically Gary’s offense and a lot of the things that were installed was Gary’s offense. “Gary gave a lot of input to Kevin throughout the course of time and (assistant) Rick Dennison with the offensive line. I think they have a little bit different personalities and both good guys, smart guys, hard workers, all those things. … I know Gary has some ideas that he has put in this offseason, but I don’t think (there will be) much difference when you look at our offense or the play calls.” WILL DALVIN SHOW UP? Cook’s camp reportedly informed the Vikings in June that their client no longer would be taking part in team activities unless he received “a reasonable deal.” Cook is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract and his base salary of $1.3 million for 2020 makes him a bargain. On Saturday, Zimmer said Cook had told him he would show up on Tuesday for the start of camp. On Saturday night, Cook’s agent, Zac Hiller, released a statement to ESPN that said Zimmer hadn’t talked to Cook and a few hours later NFL Network reported that Cook actually had talked to Vikings running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu. So what is going on here? Given that Hiller’s statement never said that his client would fail to report on Tuesday, the smart money is on Cook showing up and, thus, fulfilling the requirement that he is present for the start of training camp so he can receive an accrued season for 2020. Otherwise, the new NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement says that Cook will end this season with only three years of service time and would be eligible to become a restricted, and not unrestricted, free agent this coming March. That move could cost Cook millions. The Vikings have traditionally rewarded their best young players as they near the end of their first contract, so Cook’s best play might be to simply show up and hope something can get done. Ordinarily, that would appear to be a slam dunk, but Cook plays a position that many teams are reluctant to pay and the NFL salary cap is almost certainly going to decrease because of the impact of the pandemic. The cap is at $198.2 million this season but could have a floor of $175 million in 2021. It’s not Cook’s fault, but his timing is terrible. REPLACING DIGGS The Vikings granted Stefon Diggs’ wish to escape Minnesota in March when they sent the disgruntled wide receiver to Buffalo for a package of four draft picks. The return was an impressive one given everyone knew Diggs wanted out, but now the challenge will be replacing him and seeing how wide receiver Adam Thielen fares without opposing defenses also having to worry about Diggs. The Vikings’ hope is that first-round pick Justin Jefferson will prove to be a quick study and step in as the No. 2 wide receiver behind Thielen. But Jefferson’s camp got off to a rocky start on Monday when the Vikings announced he had been placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID-19 list. Jefferson played primarily in the slot last season and caught 111 passes for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior for national champion LSU. Best case, Jefferson steps in and picks up where Diggs left off (minus the unhappy tweets). Thielen is coming off a season in which he was limited to 10 games because of a hamstring injury, so the Vikings need him to stay on the field, too, if this is going to work. Minnesota signed former Titans wide receiver Tajae Sharpe to a one-year, $825,000 base salary contract in free agent this offseason to add depth at the position. The 25-year-old spent his first three seasons with Tennessee, but his reception total dropped from 41 to 26 to 25. Second-year receiver Bisi Johnson (31 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns) looks like he could help as a vertical threat for Cousins. Johnson was a seventh-round pick in 2019, but Diggs developed into an elite wide receiver after being a fifth-round pick in 2015. Cousins should be helped by the fact that Cook can catch passes out of the backfield and tight ends Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith Jr., both are very capable receivers. The Vikings will open camp with 12 wide receivers on the roster, but it’s the success of the top two, Thielen and Jefferson, that will be most important. WHERE WILL CLEVELAND LAND? The Vikings drafted their left tackle of the future in April when they selected Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland in the second round, but there remains an important question to be answered: When does that future begin? Riley Reiff, 31, has been the Vikings’ left tackle for the past three seasons and is entering the second to last season of a five-year, $58.75 million contract he signed in 2017. There was talk the Vikings could have Cleveland start this season at left tackle and move Reiff inside to left guard as the replacement for Pat Elflein, who struggled at that position in 2019. There also was speculation the Vikings could move Cleveland to left guard and leave Reiff at left tackle. The Vikings’ ability to get creative might have been possible if the pandemic hadn’t wiped out the on-the-field work during OTAs and minicamp. But with the offseason program lost, other than virtual learning, and now training camp set to be impacted, it will be interesting to see if Cleveland gets a chance to start, or if the Vikings simply have him learn behind Reiff and then take over at left tackle in 2021. SPEAKING OF GUARD While Elflein’s job could be in jeopardy, the competition at right guard will be wide open after veteran guard Josh Kline was released following one season in Minnesota. There are a few options for the Vikings after they did not sign a replacement for Kline, beginning with 2019 fourth-round pick Dru Samia and veteran Dakota Dozier. Aviante Collins, who orginally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2017, also could be in the mix. Collins, however, is listed at tackle on the Vikings’ roster. Samia appeared in only two games last season but was in for 63 percent of the offensive snaps in a Week 17 victory over Bears. The Vikings did not play several regulars in that game after locking into a playoff spot and that was the only game in which Samia appeared with the offense. Samia was the 2018 Big 12 offensive lineman of the year at Oklahoma. Dozier, 29, joined the Vikings last season after starting his career with the Jets. He played in all 16 games, starting four times. One of those came at left guard and the other three were in place of Kline at right guard. The Vikings re-signed Dozier to a one-year contract for a base salary of $910,000 during the offseason. The team’s preference could be for Dozier to remain in a backup role — just as Rashod Hill remains a valuable backup at tackle — and for Samia to win the starting job. #DalvinCook #EzraCleveland #GaryKubiak

German Cruise Market Heats Up
TUI Cruises took delivery of its largest cruise ship, the new Mein Schiff 1, from Meyer Turku on April 25. Due to enter service in May, as Mein Schiff also marks its 10th anniversary, the new ship is the latest advancement in the hotly contested German cruise market.
Since 2014, Germany has been Europe’s largest cruise passenger source market, growing by more than eight percent to over two million passengers in 2017 according to the CLIA. Over the past decade, the number of German cruise passengers nearly tripled lead by AIDA and TUI, which together today represent about 70 percent of the market. It continues to be the fastest growing market in Europe.
The fifth new cruise ship Meyer Turku has built for TUI Cruises in just five years, the 111,500-gross ton Mein Schiff 1 is more than 10 percent bigger than the prior ships with nearly a 14 percent increase in passenger capacity. Ordered in July 2015, Mein Schiff 1 is the first of three new ships Meyer Turku will build for TUI Cruises. Previously, Meyer Turk built four 99,800-gross ton cruise ships for the Mein Schiff operation between 2014 and 2017.
Conceived in 2008, Mein Schiff operated by TUI Cruises is a 50-50 joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises. Their first cruises launched in May 2009 with the former Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Galaxy, which was rebranded as Mein Schiff (later Mein Schiff 1). The product was tailored to the tastes and preferences of the German traveler reflected in the food, entertainment, amenities and onboard atmosphere.
The success of the Mein Schiff concept led to the introduction of a second ship, the former Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Mercury, in May 2011 as the Mein Schiff 2 and six months later the signing of a construction contract. The newly built Mein Schiff 3 was introduced in May 2014, followed by three sisters at yearly intervals. In 2017, TUI carried nearly 500,000 passengers and is expected to continue its strong growth with a fleet that now numbers six ships with nearly 15,000 berths.
Royal Caribbean Cruises CFO Jason Liberty recently told investors, “Our very successful German joint venture, TUI Cruises, will take delivery of the new Mein Schiff 1 next month. Demand for TUI Cruises’ brand is exceptionally strong and continues to accelerate as they further expand their destination offering.”
The new Mein Schiff 1 is 20 meters (approximately 65 feet) longer and adds one additional passenger deck. Double occupancy was increased to 2,894 passengers or a total passenger capacity of 3,132.
The additional size also created the opportunity for new amenities, including new bars and restaurants, a new private outdoor area for suite passengers, and a new fitness area on Deck 15. The jogging track is almost twice as long as on the previous ships and is elevated to provide ocean views. A redesigned Sports Arena is enclosed and equipped with a climbing wall and a large video screen to broadcast events including football matches.
Among the other signature areas on Mein Schiff 1 is a 50-meter wide glass and steel structure aft on the ship that was a challenge to the engineering capabilities of the designers and builders. Referred to as “The Diamond” it is both an area to relax with wake views as well as the location for specialty dining and a bar. In addition, a newly designed lagoon sun deck area was created.
The new Mein Schiff 1 also employs the latest technologies, including an energy management system, lighting controls and a LED concept, and highly efficient air conditioning, to make it 10 percent more energy efficient than the previous ships. She is one of the first cruise ships to be equipped with catalytic converters for the main and auxiliary engines, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, and uses an environmentally-friendly silicone coating on its hull.
The new ship is currently operating preview cruises with travel agency partners and guests before a gala christening celebration in Hamburg on May 11, 2018. During the summer she will be cruising in Northern Europe and the Baltic before repositioning for the winter to the Canary Islands with cruises to Madeira or Morocco.
The second ship of this class, the new Mein Schiff 2, is currently under construction at Meyer Turku with delivery scheduled for early 2019. In February 2018, TUI Cruises and Meyer also agreed to build a third ship of the class, Mein Schiff 7, due in 2023.
As part of TUI’s overall growth plan, the original Mein Schiff 1, formerly the Celebrity Galaxy, is currently being transferred to TUI’s U.K. brand Marella Cruises. However, reflecting the strong consumer interest in Mein Schiff, TUI also decided not to transfer the Mein Schiff 2 to the British market in 2019, but instead to rename her Mein Schiff Herz for cruises in the Mediterranean from Malta. She is now scheduled to stay with the fleet until at least 2022.
TUI’s new ships, along with the introduction of AIDA’s AIDANova, scheduled for November 2018, are expected to continue to drive growth in the German cruise market. According to current projections, the German market could reach three million passengers annually by 2020.
