I wanted to take a brief pause after VII, just to talk about hallmarks of Dragon Quest as a series. Because we are leaving the era where these games are a driving force in developing the JRPG genre. Like...I know when I do the final ranking I'm going to put II much higher than most. Because I earnestly feel II is one of those very special games that developed so many things that became ubiquitous you take it for granted. This does not mean VIII, IX, and XI are bad by any stretch. I'd compare it to The Simpsons; your purpose has changed in a world full of imitators. What was revolutionary is not comforting and timeless.
Sadly this does mean we'll lose a few elements that didn't translate into the next generation. Eventually the designers behind the series started following norms competitors innovated. So before we go on to VIII and it's massive legacy, a few favorite hallmarks I didn't get to cover:
One of the most iconic features here since the first that's just as fun in XI. Metal Slimes. So many have tried this and none work as well as the original. Rare version of a weak enemy that nets massive experience. The catch? They're quick to flee and while they have only 3-4 HP their defense is maxed out. Enough you might do 1 damage on a hit. Then later games introduce different, stronger varieties. If you need to grind, the metal slime family always feels like a fun little mini-game to shorten it. And the developers are smart about where their hotspots are usually. If you see one in a new area, it's worth it to try and bag a few first pass.
Dungeon Philosophy. I hate this has fallen by the wayside in favor of following Final Fantasy's style. Early on, you had to approach dungeons like an old school D&D module. You're not doing it first try. It's all part of the fun baked into what happens on a loss. You just go back to the last King/Priest you saved at and lose half your money. The dungeons are designed around this, if it's a tower you can just hop off and go back to town. But you'll have to make a few runs at the labyrinth to figure everything out and learn the optimal path. Especially with...
Random encounters having some teeth to them. This has diminished over time but game design in general has gotten easier so I don't fault DQ for it. But in those early ones, yeah random encounters can be brutal. You need to consider spells like sleep or fog that'll spare you some hits cheaply. If you flee and fail you lose a turn like a lot of RPGs but not every monster will go so it's more viable sometimes. All together, simple but tight design. A dungeon in early Dragon Quest feels like a real challenge of balancing resources like MP. This is why I love III so much, the class system plus peak design philosophy makes everything work so well as a total package. Your party comp will determine which parts are hard or easy.
Decisions on equipment. This is subtle but very cool in practice. Unlike a lot of JRPGs, in these early Dragon Quest games you're going to have to grind a lot to get every new piece of equipment you can buy immediately. Which will feel even worse if something is rendered obsolete with a dungeon treasure. You're not expected to. When you first get to town you decide what felt like it needed to be bolstered the most, then go on and start taking on the dungeon expecting to need a few trips. When you're ready to leave, decide if you want to polish it off here or try your luck with a headstart on the next town. Later games have replaced this with a crafting element I like, so it's more of a lateral move.

So turns out the reason I was so facinated by neo-pronouns and xenogenders is because I have a few! Currently playing around with the Neos: Fang/Fangself Clank/Crashself Yip/Yippself And Vae/Vaerself (if anyone has any for mushroom/fungi or dragon-based Neos I would appriciate it!) As for Xenogenders I saw Dracovir recently and that felt pretty alright!

It feels very comfortable to call myself a dragon. Or at the very least, draconic. 'Dragon' is the core of what I am, I believe.
I'm a beast with great wings and horns, a creature that hoards treasures and breathes fire. I yearn for the sky, to feel wind over my wings and through my scales.
I'm a mid-sized dragon, not at all the large apex beasts that some others are. Yet this feels right. I wasn't meant to be some large, imposing force. I'm simply me.
I love the feeling of sun on my back and water on my scales. I love the feeling of a flight at dusk.
I'm fiercely defensive of my territory and my hoard, as well as my girlfriend. I protect what is mine and I love doing so.
I am a dragon. I am me.

y'know I know I did up that whole "Nemesis and Dae's backgrounds" post already but like
kinda considering
making Dae a draconic bloodline sorcerer, after beginning a second playthrough with it and also kinda liking where my idle musing keeps running off to with it
also like
"Bhaal almost made a dragon but figured that was A Bit Too Obvious" is kinda hilarious to me lmao

Did Macaque seriously just give him an order? Him? THE Handsome Monkey King?
"For one thing, since when were you the one in charge," he quickly rebukes to make sure Macaque knows that you shouldn't give orders to your king.
Just because they were on speaking terms again after a few thousand years doesn't mean he's gonna get bossed around.

( @moonlitwanderers ) 14. A memory of a relationship for Draco?
(putting under a read more to be polite to the dash)
The Beast remembers little of her original life in clear, proper detail; after all, what use was there to remember more than what was important to the foundation of her being a Beast? But...
She could remember something; a shadow, ever loyal, no matter how far she fell, no matter what she ended up doing, that shadow would be there.
.......This was not her sword, not originally, though its current form is certainly her own; she remembers making it as a gift for that shadow, it was his, how did she end up with it? (She remembers taking a knife from him; how could she forget that knife after she used it to mark her own end.)
Where did he go? Why was he not at her deathbed, even in that Testament World?? Her beloved shadow, lost and forgotten by all but the Beast of Depravity, his sword now the only thing that remains of his will to protect her.
For such fidelity to someone so depraved as her, he deserved to at least have his wish to be by her side at the end granted, but fate is cruel, and not even the chalice in her hands could call upon that which was forgotten.
She wonders now if he ever realized just how much she truly loved him, and how grateful she is for his sword.
Bonus:
......Her poisoner really never changed, did she? Still a gigantic amount of love for both her Emperor and mushrooms.... Hopefully they meet again soon, the Beast is now craving mushrooms and Locusta always had the best ones.

The moment I knew this was still my beloved Dragon Quest. Do a lil side puzzle, get a mini medal. this one was first so it's easy, hope they get better. Still got a mini medal and my lil builder girl made a cute happy sound. Dopamine activated. Builders 2 took a while to get started, this current plague of long tutorials in an era where people know how to play video games. Super Mario 64 just gave us a courtyard to run and jump and play in is all I'm saying. Still just on the first real island Furrowfield but it feels pretty chafing. That said, when gameplay opened up and I started seeing the proper design...exclellent.
I stand more by what I said when I compared it to SNES games like ActRaiser. You're just giving me two pretty good but basic gameplay loops and that classic Dragon Quest charm smooths over juggling them. I liked Minecraft when it came out but I know the sandbox with eternally new toys coming out genre isn't for me. Having a purpose and a main story that still gives me some nice setpiece encounters is preferable to seeing what I can build screwing around. Especially when I can still do that and plop stuff down freely if I want. That plus DQ2 nostalgia is enough for me to wanna finish this.

Just realized that I have talked about ‘cyphering’ but never uploaded my first attempt at it My first real crack at it was when I was still a freshman in high-school, but the actual continuous use and development of the hobby didn’t really pick up for me until I had hit college; I had been getting these strong desires to write something “unfamiliar but understandable”  for years at this point, and I finally had something ‘worthwhile’ enough to channel the feeling into, stuff like ecology notes, moving away and meet-up plans with people I cared about Anyway, back on topic; the first attempt (shown above) was sort of all over the place shape and theme wise, I wanted something that “looked cool” and to meet that I just pulled influence from every other fake language I saw as well as random design elements that looked cool to me And while I think I definitely succeeded in making something that gives a “cool” vibe, its incredibly hard to write and read! Perhaps a better version of this can exist if I limited the shapes used and changed it to work more like cuniform or clawrite by making a special writing tool? Though I think in the end I don’t want to attempt a ‘perfect version’ it contains a good amount of personal history for me, and starting from scratch would be much more rewarding

Their last battle had left them exhausted, the dragon had not seen anything like it before. The price? A searing wound at the end of their tail, the left fin ripped in half. They rest against a nearby bank, frustrated at their current circumstances.

unprompted asks [always accepting]
Many, many years ago, her mother had taught her stories about dragons. They were different stories from the usual Western tales of ancient beings set on capturing princesses and holding hoards of gold. In her mother's home, dragons were ancient, mythical creatures of great wisdom. They lived in the oceans or high, high above the earth, nearly within the Celestial Realm of Heaven.
Most of her mother's stories came true with the yokai- kitsune, tanuki, kappa... Those myths and ghost stories acted as warnings and ways to avoid death or trickery.
But dragons? Robin had never seen a dragon before. She had convinced herself that maybe they didn't exist... Or she was just not in a place where they were found roaming. The forest wasn't the best place for giant serpents to hide.
And yet... She had found @draconic-muses . A real, true dragon, with scales the color of night. No wonder such creatures couldn't be seen... Their scales must have been camoflague.
Watching from the brush, the shifter was quiet, her pencil working quickly to try and draw every last detail of the strange creature.
