Does anyone else find it tough to pick which lines to use for these things? 😵‍💫 Well, here are rather a lot of sentences from Chapter 18 - Coming Clean from Fallen From the Sky with Grace.

Dr. Wellbelove's POV. He has brought Shepard and Penny to his private room at his office.

(Shepard) has continued meandering around my room, past the books and on to the shelves. It’s uncanny the way that he’s drawn to the most exceptional items in my office. (As a Normal, he shouldn't even be able to see some of these things.) I watch him dance his fingers across, but not touch, my unicorn horn.

"Don't touch," I say.

"Oh, I wouldn't!" he replies breathlessly.

I study him a moment more, then take one last look back in the cupboard to see if I have anything else that this man could wear, a hat or tie, perhaps, balled up on a shelf.

Shepard clears his throat. "May I ask you something?" he asks in a serious voice.

"Yes, go ahead."

"Do you know anything about mermaid STIs?"

I drop the hanger.

COC Day 8 - "Sick"

Sorry this is late. I honestly forgot I'd doodled this tiny little text ficlet. Just some randomness that popped into my head with this @carryon-countdown prompt.

Simon POV:

“I’m not sick.”

I sigh as I eye a wall full of homeopathic teas. Surely there’s something here, out of like 500 different herbal blends, that will help Baz out. I pick one up and read the label (like that will help). “You’re malnourished,” I murmur into my mobile as I read, “which I could fix, but you don’t want to bite me.”

I can hear Baz roll his eyes. “I’m fine, Snow. And I don’t get sick, so you don’t have to cure me.”

“Mmm-hmm.” Maybe this one? Is echinacea beneficial to stubborn blood-starved vampires? Maybe something with more iron in it. Maybe I should be stuffing supplements down his throat.

“I don’t get sick. I’m a dark creature of the night.”

I love how he uses that excuse like it isn’t at least partly responsible for his current condition. Prat. “You fainted.”

There’s a pause, then Baz mutters, “I took a strategic break from consciousness.”

I snort. I’m going to stuff him with iron supplements, then kiss him stupid. “You like green tea, right?”

Baz lets out a beleaguered sigh, which has a sort of honking cadence to it over the phone. “I’m not sick.” A pause. Then, “But I do like green tea.”

Right. Into the basket with that blend. “If I ‘took a break’ the way you did this morning, you’d have had me at Dr. Wellbelove’s within the hour.”

“That’s different.”

Red meat. I could do steak. I’m pretty decent at grilling. And if all else fails, Baz needs practice putting out fires, right? “Really not,” I say after a second. “I’m getting you protein powder, too.”

“That’s barbaric, Snow.”

“Oh, I’ll show you barbaric, Pitch,” I say with a smile. “But only if you drink your tea, and your protein shake, and top it all off with twice as many rodents as usual. And if you ask nicely.”

A pause. “I’m still not biting you.”

Was that hesitation? My altruistic desire to help Baz suddenly seems like a potential opportunity. I dump three flavours of protein powder into my basket, including one I know has the consistency of ground chalk. “Promises, promises, Baz.”

Today in fics I’m never going to write but keep thinking about: Baz getting hit with amnesia shortly before the events of WS and being told he’s dating some guy with wings and a tail who never gets off the sofa. And he’s like, “Yeah I don’t see it,” which is kind of heartbreaking but also kind of a giant release of pressure for Simon because, “Oh he doesn’t know what I’ve lost,” and they become tentative friends. Baz of course loves Penny and they nerd out trying to figure out what’s caused Baz’s amnesia. There’s no real incentive for Baz to get his memories back except, “They’re my memories, Simon. Don’t you think I’m owed them?” To which Simon just smiles sadly and misses the way Baz used to call him Snow. But it’s fine! Honestly! Simon keeps downplaying what they had. Telling little stories like, “Oh that’s the time you spelled my laptop shut nbd,” and, “Yeah I got locked out in the cold all night but the stars were really pretty,” and Baz is like… and you dated me??? But there’s also moments where Simon explains he broke Baz’s nose and tried to out him as a vampire, and Baz just doesn’t get it, them, at all.

Except… okay so maybe it hasn’t escaped Baz’s notice how attractive Simon is. And there are moments when he gets off the couch that he’s shockingly funny, and sweet. He sometimes slips into quiet but Baz has started to piece together what’s happened and maybe that makes sense. It’s not like he has anything to say, either. “What would I have to offer in conversation, Simon? I barely even know my own name.” And they sit together on the sofa and watch television. It’s… something.

Insert a bit of Baz spiral with Baz wondering, “is this what made me fall? Is this?” As he keeps looking for the spark, the reason, the moment he fell for Simon Snow.

I’m not sure what the conflict is here. Maybe Baz overhears Dr. Wellbelove talking to Simon about the Mage? Maybe there’s a Fiona intervention? A Malcolm one? But at some point there’s some big argument where Baz confronts Simon and they’re screaming at each other and then Baz bursts into laughter. And Simon’s like wtf Baz but Baz can’t stop laughing because of course this is it. Of course this is when he falls for Simon. When they’re screaming at each other.

But it’s not that, is it? It’s every time Simon smiled, and every time something on the television made him laugh and Simon’s first reaction is to look at Baz. And it’s how he teases Penny and hasn’t pressured Baz to get his memories back. Just accepts him as he is. Helps him hunt. Maybe yells at Fiona to back off when Baz doesn’t get his memories back fast enough. It’s how Simon Snow is alive, alive, alive, he’s full of life and that’s when it all comes rushing back. All of his memories falling like rain all over Baz; not a flood but a cleansing. It’s not overwhelming to love Simon it’s never been and having this outside perspective on who Simon is and what he’s been through independent of Baz’s issues has reminded Baz of what he’s fighting for.

Baz finally stops laughing. He walks over to Simon, presses both hands to his cheeks, says, “Snow,” then kisses him. And of course Baz hasn’t called Simon “Snow” this whole time so Simon knows Baz’s memories are back.

Ok and insert more angst: Simon immediately pushes Baz off and walks out their door. Because it’s been easy letting Baz in hasn’t it? He didn’t know what Simon lost. Who he used to be. He finally understood, didn’t he? The arsehole… ever since Baz lost his memories he knew better. He knew what Simon had always known: that Simon is nothing. Not the Chosen One, not even a mage. God not even Normal. Just a chewed up bit of empty space with wings and a tail. A freak. Wasn’t it nice, getting to know Baz without any of that history? Without any of the pressure? I mean sure sometimes Simon wanted to pounce on him and snog him senseless or hold his hand when the movie they were watching got scary. And Baz kept doing things for Simon like getting him the brand of cider he likes best and making sandwiches for him when he forgot to eat. And spending time with him without huffing about how Simon was wasting his life and not looking at Simon like he could see who used to be there: someone. Someone who mattered. And that’s what it’s gonna be now, right? More pointed looks and disappointed smiles and knowing, always knowing and never saying that Baz is too good for him.

Didn’t he know Simon Snow was meant to be alone?

Oooh okay maybe Simon just like, rage runs back to the flat and slams open the door and is like, “How dare you?” But he’s not even sure what he’s saying. He’s not even sure what he’s thinking. All he knows is that he wants Baz, any version of Baz, even the one who thinks he’s wasting his life because of course he’s missed that. He liked sitting next to Baz and watching shows and not feeling any pressure but god the way he felt when Baz was screaming at him. Simon’s got wings but he never feels like he can fly without Baz, next to him. Pushing him.

Because if Simon is alive alive alive it’s only because Baz makes him want to be. Baz has always been Simon’s reason, even when things were…

And then Simon’s kissing Baz, and Baz is kissing back, and maybe Simon can keep this. Maybe he can choose this.

Maybe he can try.

Rainbow Rowell, Carry On, Chapter 9

This quote is super interesting, because I presume Simon had not mentioned Baz in this list, but he definitely brings him up way more than anyone else he referred to. For context, this is his second mention of Miss Possibelf, and the third mention of Dr Wellbelove. Baz gets nine mentions in just the first chapter.

So I’ve seen stuff by @sailorblossoms about how Simon’s wings represent his queerness, and I am so here for that, but I have another take: the wings symbolise his trauma. Simon’s been through some shit, and one of the things I love so much about his trilogy is that, as painful as his depression is to read about, he’s shown having a genuine response to his trauma, and part of it is through how he deals with his wings. He got his wings at the height of his trauma, and they can’t be magicked away, showing how his trauma isn’t going to magically go away. Yet he still tries to make it - in Wayward Son, he wants to keep them, getting angry at the mention of getting them removed in any way, and to me this shows how he’s not ready to move on yet. He’s not ready to face what he’d gone through and heal and move on from his trauma, and by extension he’s not ready to get rid of his wings. However, in AWTWB, he tries to force their removal, agreeing to let Dr. Wellbelove amputate them, and this shows how he’s taking it a step further - now he not only doesn’t want to face his trauma, but he wants to pretend like it never even happened, because we all know Simon is bad at processing feelings and almost worse at acknowledging them. Yet there are times when you see him start to heal - when he uses them to fly just because he can in Wayward Son, when he takes them out in places like Lady Ruth’s house or when he’s with Baz, when he gets jumpy in the examination room at the hospital. Even though he agrees to the amputation, when it’s actually going to happen, he can’t go through with it, partly because he has unfinished business that’s bothering him too much (which is also related to his trauma), but also because being touched on his wings feels too intimate and personal - just as talking about a traumatic experience would feel. The wings curl up so tightly that they’re barely noticeable, a protective measure caused by the subconscious realisation that his wings aren’t something he needs to get rid of. By the end of AWTWB, he’s accepted his wings - sure, they’re still inconvenient at times, just like how trauma will never fully leave you, but he can deal with them now, in fact, he’s kind of proud of them now - they’re a battle scar, if you will. A reminder of what he went through, but not one that necessarily causes pain or sadness now that he’s healed. Bonus points? Baz loves every part of Simon, he’s always loved every part of Simon, and that includes his wings - even when Simon couldn’t accept that part of himself, Baz accepted it, Baz loved it. He wants to touch them, pet them, kiss them - to him, they’re beautiful. They’re a part of who Simon is, and you can’t just ignore them, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing once you’re removed from how he got them - just like trauma.

Seeing @ionlydrinkhotwater ask why Simon would like the mage makes me think... Simon is young, vulnerable and neglected... We can become attached to people who are bad news, especially in that position. 

Simon doesn’t know the mage created the entire situation – all he knows is that he has nobody, and this is the only adult who has ever claimed him. From Simon’s POV, the mage is the person who showed up and took him to a world of wonder. He’s the reason Simon has access to a world where he met all the people he loves, where he made the only friends he’s ever had, where he fell in love (with Baz) before he knew what it was (even if he didn’t know it then, he did miss Baz when he didn’t see him, he did look forward to going back and seeing him again, he’s already thinking about him before he even brings up his list of “things he miss about Watford”), where he created all his happy memories. 

The mage provided a purpose and structure, guidance and an understanding of the world to a kid who had none of these things (long after the mage is gone, Simon still goes back to his words to make sense of the magickal world). He give that to a kid who didn’t know himself, who felt ugly and forgotten, who disliked himself and didn’t want to be alone in his head. Who didn’t want to think. That alone would be enough to make Simon feel special. For a vulnerable kid who doesn’t know any better, it would be just enough to become attached. The mage made Simon feel important. 

This is not the only instance where the series shows how vulnerability can be exploited. We think of the characters as growing up (in more than one way) as the series progresses, but I think about Lamb, looking at Baz and seeing a child. A lost child. Baz, vulnerable and lost, wishing Lamb was around in a moment of weakness, because Lamb provided guidance, and that provides direction. Security... even after Lamb threatened him with fire. Of course Baz wanted to trust him. Of course Simon wanted to trust the mage. And of course that exposed them to be lied to, manipulated, etc. After all, “the adults know best!” “they know what’s best for them” without feeling the need to ever tell them shit. Not shit that matters, anyway. 

To top it all, Simon doesn’t know what it is like to have loving adult figures in his life. His normal-meter is all fucked up. The mage was the only adult in his life, so he had nothing to compare it to... the mage and the Wellbeloves. But the thing about the Wellbeloves is that they’re conditional. They’re there because he’s connected to Agatha: as a classmate, as a friend, and then later as “a future son-in-law.” The Wellbeloves show Simon kindness – they are the reason Simon is happy during the holidays (the parents and not Agatha herself, because Simon liked being welcomed to a comfortable, luxurious home by adults who treat him well, things he never fucking had, but he didn’t like being alone there with Agatha as a boyfriend – note how he uses language like “being trapped,” describes only how being there started their friendship and nothing else and never thinks about her as a factor when listing the things he likes about being there). He thinks of the Wellbeloves as parental figures who can provide with the things he desperately wants but is lacking (which I think is a big reason why he got into and then stayed in a relationship with Agatha, even when it was souring their friendship, even when the signs of unhappiness and discomfort showed up) but he never thinks of them as his parental figures. He’s always an outsider. His presence is, again, always conditional. 

At the end of the day, the mage is the only adult tied directly to Simon, the one who keeps showing up (that, by itself, can make Simon feel a certain way... enough to wish iirc for him to perhaps be his father) (and Wellbeloves would also serve as a big reminder of what Simon doesn’t have – being called son by Dr Wellbelove not like he’s his son but like he can be a son). The tragedy of this, of course, is that the mage’s interference left Simon a homeless orphan in the first place. He’s the source of Simon’s biggest issues... but Simon never learns of this while growing up. By the time he starts to see the true awfulness of the mage, he has been attached for years, and those type of feelings are hard to turn off completely. 

What Simon has with Penny is strong and is real love, but also: much of their relationship is Penny taking care of Simon. It’s Penny supporting him and sort of “adopting” him as a full-time job. That made Penny the one he always turn to, but I don’t think that provided Simon with a template to know how to “give back.” I think Simon only learns that from Baz (a natural caretaker) when they start to communicate in awtwb. He begins to learn how to “give” and be in a loving relationship. Before he learns from Baz, how does Simon measures “a good” relationship? What are the parameters? To have the person taking care of him? To have the person help him fit into the society where he wants to belong?... In his eyes, didn’t the mage do that by getting him into school? By teaching him the ways of the world? Teaching him how to fight, giving him a purpose, making him feel “useful” in a place where he wanted to belong etc etc. The mage mistreating him would not be a wake up call by itself then, when he’s still giving him “everything else.” When Simon doesn’t know better. You know what they say about the way abusers give and take. Well. Food for thought.

It's still Sunday, I swear! What? You don't believe me? Fine!

Since I haven't posted in two weeks, I'll give you a bit of every fic I'm working on. It's six sentences-ish about each one (sometimes a little more was necessary for context). And hey, I'm down to five WIPs! Just in time to start EGF 🤦‍♀️.

From: Saving Simon Snow

“You–You baked these for me?” I hate the way my voice sounds uncertain, young. Fragile. 

His face softens though and he says. “Of course I did. It would hardly be a care package for Simon Snow if there were no sour cherry scones in it.”

“I…thank you,” I whisper. He nods and smiles, and then tells me he’ll be back later, with Penny. 

After he’s gone, I unwrap the scones. And break down sobbing when I realise that he’s left me a bowl of butter and a spreading knife to go with them. 

From: The White Chapel (A Xanadu AU)

 I watch Simon and Baz. They’ve found a cleared space over by the grand escalator, and they’re dancing. Simon’s arms are around Baz’s neck, and there’s not an inch of space between their bodies. As ELO plays on the store’s speaker system, they sway in place, Simon’s head resting on Baz’s chest, Baz’s head resting on Simons. Baz’s eyes are closed and there’s a dreamy smile on his lips. Simon’s are open. And strangely, he looks sad.

 Simon alternates between calm acceptance and extreme irritation about his new appendages, so it’s a guessing game each day as to whether he’ll be tolerable to be around. We’ve not found much feed for the animals, because the river is far below us at the bottom of a canyon and the vegetation is growing down there, not up here. We’re surrounded by sand and sagebrush. And no trees for shade against the ninety degree heat. I spend each day in a puddle of my own sweat, and Simon’s irritation grows exponentially with the temperature, given he also has thick wings resting against his back, heating him up further.

Simon runs his arm over his eyes and then sighs, louder and longer this time. “Alright, Baz, I get it. I’m a liar and an idiot. But are we going to talk about why you decided to sleep in the bed next to mine?”

I look at him for a long moment. His blue eyes are staring into mine as if he can read his answers in them. He’s earnest and good and beautiful—and I need to get out of here before I declare my undying love for him.

“No,” I reply, and walk out.   

And from: Raising Dragons

 “There’s blood!”

If I had blood in my cheeks, it would have drained down to my toes. Well, this is it; this is what I’ve feared for the last eleven years.

When Simon was ‘with egg’ as he calls it now (he hates hearing the word pregnant applied to him. Even if he is pregnant again right now.), we had a lot of questions for the doctor. And Dr. Wellbelove patiently answered them all. But I had one question I never dared to ask, too afraid of the answer. And I’ve lived with that fear ever since. 

And now it seems that fear has come true.
