Remember how Facebook and Livejournal used to encourage you to post your status in terms of how you were feeling? "Jenny Lemon is feeling..." and you had a vocabulary bank of emotions words that you could pick from. I need a daily, at times hourly, "Jenny Lemon is feeling..." about this COBB fic. Right now it would be "Jenny Lemon is second-guessing everything she has already written." Under the cut, tags and the conflicting thoughts I've been processing, often within seconds of each other, with a corresponding snippet:

Me: "I should try to push through writing more and not get distracted by knowing the first couple chapters are the hottest of messes."

Also me: "Sure but I could also just move the same paragraphs in the first 2 pages of chapter 1 around over and over and over until I fall asleep on the keyboard."

Snippet--the first lines I ever wrote on this fic. they've been in chapter 2, in chapter 3, in chapter 1 at the beginning, and now in the middle of chap 1: "Before my head goes back down on my desk, I let my eyes wander out the bank of windows along the wall. The Wavering Wood, dark and ancient, always thrumming with life. The green of the pitch close by. The beautiful old buildings, ancient stones stacked on top of each other, some impossibly tilted, all humming with magic. Some of these buildings I’m sure wouldn’t be upright without it. If anything ever threatened our magic, I think Watford couldn't stand it--literally."

Me: "too much about Fiona's car. this is a distraction and not relevant to the plot."

Also me, seconds later: "I should make a playlist with the theme song Fiona's car would play for every single person who's mentioned in this fic."

Snippet that is entirely irrelevant it's true, and yet why would I write if I couldn't make jokes that entertain myself?: "These days, the car is mostly held together with magic. If a Normal ever managed to steal it and got through the years of wards layered on it, I think it might crumble into a pile of dust. Among its many charming tricks, the passenger door only opens with shotgun, and then only half the time."

Me: "I'm trying to do too much with secondary characters. I should trim the side characters and maybe one of the side plots, focus on the main arc(s)."

Also me, seconds later after @facewithoutheart gave me the very best idea about how to work in a Veronica Mars element I had given up on: "What if I introduced at least 3 more characters and a NEW side plot without removing anything?????"

Snippet: "I’ve just got the door open when a motorcycle roars up beside me. I wince at the sound but [redacted] doesn’t even stir. It pulls up right beside the MG and the rider pulls off its helmet, its double jointed antenna unfurling. 

'Pitch,' he snarls. 'I’ve been looking for you, arsehole.'

Fuck."

the last time i did this was years ago, and i think that wip is still a wip as of today. meaning, i still haven't established my fic writing skills, but that's okay. BECAUSE I GOT PROMPTS! and i can't even be sad im not the one writing them , i just need to get these ideas out of my head really, bonus if someone picks them up.

Besides, im preparing for this examination that could potentially get me into a program (almost no tuition!) that would merge my bachelor years and med years to make it shorter (but hell) so i could get 2 degrees in lesser time

Anyway here's the idea:

Trans!Simon and Gay™️Baz get along together since their first year and they. were. inseperable. But this is Simon pre transition and baz was like so comfy w his bestie plus, at young age he didnt realized he was gay as well (but yk always with the gut feeling that he's different) but simon is always there, making him feel safe

BUT! 5th year came and simon IS simon so the only rational thing to do is to get them assigned as roommates bus suddenly HELLO?? BAZ. HATES. SIMON?! and simon be all mopey and sad and angry and WHAT THE FUCK BAZ R U NOW A RAGING TRANSPHOBIC. and baz cant breath because his only thought were like, im gay im gay im gay simon r u gay too lets kiss. But outside he was just dismissive and always irritated by simon. So now they were broken up as friends (aww) but when one of them closes a window, the other opens them again!

WIP Wednesday

Thanks for the tags @thewholelemon and @shrekgogurt. Your stuff looks so good (yes ALL of it Jenny! Stop doubting yourself!) and I cannot wait until it is out in the world. Thanks also to @hushed-chorus -- I already devoured the two fics on your list I had never heard of and they were SOO good! We're very much on the same wavelength with vamp angst.

You know what’s not as fun as everyone's updates? Developing a truly distinct voice for a fic and then trying to break out of it once you are done. I love my narrator for The Eternal Life of Baz Pitch, but flowery prose/omniscient third-person doesn't work for most fics! I'm trying to ease my transition back into first person POV switching by writing a sequel to my EGF fic, Kill Em With Kindness. It doesn’t need a sequel, but it’s been a fun way to get back to throwing words on the page and seeing what sticks. (I wrote 1k words over the past couple days, which is way more than I have since I finished Eternal Life! Are the words any good? Debatable. But progress is progress...)

In the meantime, here is a bit of current Baz from chapter 5 under the cut. Not technically spoilery if you haven’t started reading, but honestly, you should be forced to wait just as long as everyone who has been reading for this meet-cute…so I forbid you from clicking if you haven’t started yet!!!

“Hey—uh—there’s a long line—” the young man smiles awkwardly, “—so if you aren’t ready, maybe you should step aside?” Baz regains control of his mind and mouth briefly enough to utter an order. “Pumpkin mocha breve. Small.” The young man laughs. “Are you a child?” “What?” “That drink sounds gross.” He wrinkles his nose. “Certainly much too sweet for a grown man to drink before his morning run.” Baz is well and truly shocked from his reverie now. He glances at the young man’s name tag. Simon.  “I’m perfectly serious, Simon. Can you not make it?” Baz raises an eyebrow.  “I can.” Simon shrugs. “I’d rather not.”

Happy Wednesday y’all! I bring you big pining from the distance makes the heart grow ouchier chapter. (Y’all thought you had already seen the peak pining in IKABIKAM? Oh, dearests, you’ve seen NOTHING yet.)

Baz POV, present:

The loss of a fantasy. That’s all. It’s the loss of an escape that never would’ve been. Not in reality. Not in a way I actually want. And so, instead, the Instagram notification burns a hole in my pocket. A reminder I ignore for the time being. What’s a little longer? A little more? Forever and ever on.

I’m at a party.

I will talk. I will charm. I will have fun. Like muscle memory. Like the tattoos on my arm.

I had a life. I have a life.

Someone asks for my name.

“Basil,” I introduce, stressing the ‘ah’ sound.

It’s the most neutral option. Friendly enough, but not overly so. Basilton is too contrived in the American accent and for all my resoluteness, I still don’t want to be called Baz right now. Not without the ghost of a Celtic lilt. (How the notification burns, indeed.)

I forgot! I get to announce chapter titles in the wipsday posts! So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings of course. It’s only natural.

Hi everyone! I’m climbing out of my cave and scheduling this in advance to spread the good word about vampire angst. Because, as anyone who’s read my blog title knows, I am a fiend for vampire angst, and there is some cracking vampire angst in this fandom.

Lamb is a character who really fascinates me. This ficlet imagines a conversation Baz and Lamb would have if Lamb discovered Baz was a mage under less bloody circumstance. This short and sweet fic is something of a hidden gem, and I’ll cry forever that this is a 600 word fic, not a 60k one.

Crowding out the Bad (with Good) by twigs_in_my_hair

Another WIP, and if you are a fan of lore, this is one for you. This AU involves Simon trying to improve his diet with the help of nutritionist (and reluctant vampire) Baz. Twigs devotes so much to exploring Baz’s feelings about his vampirism, and how it has left marks on his life, behaviour, etc. And, of course, there's a lovely bit of slow burn Snowbaz along the way!

Bogwitch constantly surprises and impresses me with her range. This short (400 words), sweet and heartbreaking ficlet sees Baz receiving a Visiting during the events of Carry On. I love it so much.

What if Natasha Pitch survived the vampire attack, but Baz still got Turned? What would that mean for Baz and the World of Mages? In this WIP, it means a Baz who is even more angsty about being a vampire than he already is in canon—and with good reason. Added bonus is the consideration for the wider canon divergence. What would Watford be like if Natasha is still headmistress but Davy is the Mage? Very intriguing fic so far, especially now we’ve landed in eighth year!

The least Baz-focused on the bunch, this fic is about the Mage taking Old Family children prisoner for leverage and the aftermath. It sees Baz hit his lowest point (gave me the big good sads), and then follows how he and Simon recover from all they’ve been through. Love it.

how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)

there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you can’t find any post on your own blog, it’s impossible, bluhrblub~

I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if you’re on desktop/browser and you know what you’re doing:

url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, it’s just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant

url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest first 

url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order

url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes 

url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc

url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly 

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant) 

the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog! 

caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks. 

if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else

if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)
