Groove to Greatness: Your First Steps in Breakdancing Mastery
Breakdancing, also known as breaking or b-boying/b-girling, is a dynamic and visually captivating street dance style that originated in the 1970s as part of hip-hop culture in the United States. Known for its intricate body movements, strength, coordination, and flair, breakdancing requires physical skill and a deep connection with the rhythm and beats of music. If you're a beginner eager to dive into breakdancing, this guide is your starting point for mastering the foundational moves and understanding the culture.
Understanding the Basics
Breakdancing consists of four primary types of movements: top rock, down rock, power moves, and freezes. Each element serves its unique purpose and style within a dancer's routine.
Toprock: This is your opening move, performed standing up. It's your chance to set the tone and style and show off your rhythm and flair. Simple steps include the Indian Step and the Cross Step.
Downrock: Also known as footwork, downrock is performed close to the ground. It includes the 6-step- or 3-step moves, which involve circular motions around your hands and feet.
Power moves are high-impact, acrobatic moves that often define breakdancing in popular culture. Moves like windmills, headspins, and flares require significant strength and practice.
Freezes: A freeze is when you hold a pose, usually on your hands, showcasing control, form, and balance. Common freezes for beginners include the Baby Freeze and Turtle Freeze.
Gear Up Appropriately
Breakdancing is physically demanding and requires appropriate attire to perform moves comfortably and safely. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement. Most breakers prefer sneakers that offer good grip and flexibility. To protect your head, a beanie or headspin cap is common when practicing spinning moves.
Start with the Music
Music is a core element of breakdancing. Breakbeats, funk, and hip-hop tracks are commonly used. The music sets the rhythm and inspires the dancer’s movements and expressions. Listen to classic tracks used in breakdancing to get a feel for the beat and tempo.
Learn the Basic Steps
Toprock Technique: Start with basic steps like the Indian Step:
Stand with your feet together.
Step out diagonally with one foot and bring your other arm across your body.
Tap your foot and bring it back, then repeat on the other side in rhythm with the music.
Downrock Technique: Practice the 6-step, foundational footwork pattern:
Start in a push-up position.
Move one leg under your body and across, turning your hips so one leg is extended to the side and you are facing the ground.
Circle the other leg around to follow, continuing the motion to return to your starting position.
Develop Your Power Moves and Freezes
These moves require more practice and strength, and it’s often best to learn them under supervision:
Windmill: Start from a backspin position, use your arms to lift your body, and rotate your legs in a V-shape over your body.
Baby Freeze: Place one hand on the ground, tuck your elbow into your stomach, and balance your head on the ground, lifting your legs into the air.
Practice Regularly
Consistency is vital in mastering breakdancing. Set a regular practice schedule, and stick to it. Practice each move slowly and gradually increase your speed as you gain confidence and muscle memory.
Join the Community
Breakdancing is not just about individual skills; it’s also about community and culture. Join local dance classes or groups, participate in workshops, and attend battles and competitions. Learning from others and experiencing the communal aspect of breakdancing will enrich your understanding and proficiency.
Your Dance Journey Begins
Embarking on your breakdancing journey can be thrilling and demanding. It's a dance form that challenges your body, stimulates creativity, and connects you with a vibrant culture. By starting with the basics and gradually building your skills, you’ll gain physical agility and strength and join a community that celebrates expression, resilience, and artistry. Keep pushing your limits, and let every dance floor be your stage to shine!

Los Holy’s
Los Holy’s was an instrumental band out of Peru who formed in 1966. The band recorded one LP and several singles, and are considered to be among the first rock groups to experiment with psychedelic rock, surf rock, and latin beat.
Members included Marcos Goyzueta (lead guitar), Arturo Matto (rhythm guitar), Oscar Saenz (bass), Renzo Carozzi (farfisa organ), and Walo Carrillo (drums).
Tumblr media
Initially known as the Sharks, the band formed in late 1966 by friends who were studying at GUE. Bartolomé Herrera in the district of Pueblo Libre. Upon finishing school, the band changed their name to Los Holy’s. Their first single, “Holy’s Psychedelic” / “Ginza Lights,” was recorded on the Dinsa/Success label, founded by Alberto Maravi. When it came to the band’s album, there were moments of tension between the members. Their manager and Carozzi wanted to record a more traditional album, whereas Walo, Goyzueta, and Saenz wanted to record something that was more along the lines of bands like Cream.
Tumblr media
The album, Sueño sicodélico (Psychedelic Dream), was groundbreaking at the time of its release with its psychedelic and surf sound. The liner notes to the LP were of interest too. They said
“We know all the sounds in the seabed? space stations do not capture waves produced thousands of light years? , try to reproduce those sounds with our instruments and perhaps being more pleasant than the sound of waves.”
Los Holy’s recorded a handful of singles before disbanding in 1969.
You can find their outstanding records here.

While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, b-boying consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. B-boying is typically danced to hip-hop, funk music, and especially breakbeats, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter.
Aries
That “Dance, Dance, Revolution” machine you spent lots of hours on is being retired and is up for sale. Check the local Yellow Pages for “Video Game Rentals and Service” and see how much they want for it. They might throw in a tabletop Pac-Man for free!
Taurus
Nothing’s gunna get in your way this week. Every crazy idea you’ve ever had is gunna be amazing. Start off with this: Hot Pocket Tomato Soup! One can of soup, ¼ can of heavy cream, and one Hot-Pocket. Cover and simmer on low until the Hot-Pocket breaks down. You’ll thank us later.
Gemini
Trying to play computer games while your internet connection is down is more than frustrating, it’s moronic! Who knew Microsoft would require a ‘Net Connection to play Solitaire?! Get out to the dollar store and buy a pack of playing cards. And stop cheating!
Cancer Moon-Child
Valhala awaits your death with a feast beyond anything you could ever imagine! Deer, elk, boar, rabbit, leeks, potato, roasted apples… but Odin will grudgingly allow you to have lasagna, but lobster?! Those are the cockroaches of the ocean floors. Do NOT insult Odin in his own house!
Leo
There’s a bunch of techno-synthwave dance hits from the 80’s that you want to dance to. Go for it, but remember two things. First - it’s been a long time since you danced with cardboard on the sidewalk. You are not in shape or stretched out enough to, so don’t think you can do Downrock moves right away. And second - train Alexa to recognize this phrase, “I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up!”
Virgo
In Japan it’s not just common, but good manners and a compliment to slurp your noodles. It helps cool them off and let folks know you think they taste great. Conversely this doesn’t work with mozzarella on pizza. Remember, if you feel like you’re swallowing the cheese and it’s not going anywhere, you’re choking. Act accordingly.
Libra
Just because you think a situation is urgent doesn’t mean it is for anyone else. In I.T., this is usually repeated as, “A lack of planning on YOUR part does not constitute an emergency on MY part.” Now you understand why paying for pizza lunches to the Info Jockeys is a good idea.
Scorpio
Are you in love? It’s hard to tell sometimes. Get yourself heavily drunk in front of a video recording and see how you behave when you’re so gone you can’t remember it the next day. You’ll say things only your deepest emotions feel. Just don’t livestream that.
Sagittarius
Sure, that “Star Trek: The Next Generation - Animated” short was exactly how Flimation did it back in the day, but telling people that it still looks better than the “Cal Arts” style is wrong. Not that you’re incorrect, but telling people isn’t going to get you anywhere. They won’t know any better.
Capricorn
We warned you last week not to admit to anything, but you forgot. The best you can do to keep this situation from spiraling out of control is to just isolate yourself. Consider a trip to an island where nobody knows who you are. Madagascar should be nice this time of year.
Aquarius
The movie “The Ring” was released in 2002. Its premise was that a VHS tape, when played, would kill the viewer within seven days. Since the last VCR player was made in 2016, there’s no reason to remake this movie. And since the next physical media was DVD, who would bother burning a DVD to make copies anymore?
Pisces
Some of those bridges you burned were justified, but you might need to rebuild one. Before you commit resources to it, check and see if there’s an alternative. Blackmail, though distasteful, can be effective in getting people to leave you alone.
And THOSE are your Hobble-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Discord.

When I was younger, I was quite the dancer and entertainer.
I had always wanted a room, or at least a wall, filled with mirrors. Yes, I wanted to look at myself but I wasn’t concerned with looking at my body for what it was when it was doing nothing. I was more concerned with the beauty and art my body could produce if I moved and manipulated it in such a way. The mirrors aren’t there to keep me complacent and proud over something I didn’t work for, but they are there to help critique me.
And I think I’m having that desire to move my body again and see how I can improve my movements with those mirrors.

Richard Marks
Funk fans love several of guitarist/vocalist Richard Marks’ 45s and indeed he did make some high class dance music – but there was more to his career than that. It seems as though his first release was the initial 45 for the legendary Tuska label from his home town Atlanta, GA.
His own “Funky Four Corners” ran to two parts, with the second half being a fine advertisement for his guitar work. Although this got a national release on Roulette it never dented the charts. His second single “I’m The Man For You” is another spare funky workout, with more than a hint of the Soul Brother #1 in his axe style and horn arrangement.
Tumblr media
Georgia music man Tee Fletcher had more than hand in Marks’ upbeat “Don’t Take It Out On Me” which was leased out to Shout. The flip “Love Is Gone” is in a similar vein, but the better melody and higher grade performance from Marks make this the preferred side. His third Tuska 45 was for me his best to date. ListenDid You Ever Lose Something was a fine piece of strutting southern soul with some fine horns, and the flip “Never Satisfied” was another JB styled funk winner. The odd ball release from his Did you ever lose something - TUSKA 112stay with Tuska was the Christmas 45. “Home For The Holidays” was a pleasant if unremarkable toe tapper, but the flip “Mr Santa Clause” was a revelation. A dead slow blues of considerable power it was the first time that Marks was able to show off his chops on a ballad.
Tumblr media
During the 70s Marks worked with Bill Wright for some time and they shared labels like Tuska and Note together.
Now in 2019 you can touch funk oldschool legend Richard Marks by your own by clicking here
Tumblr media
These songs, found on reels that Marks kept in his home, color Marks’ stylistic development – from his earliest work for the legendary Tuska label in the late ‘60s, through his more mature releases on smaller regional labels into the late ‘70s.
Marks’ story is that of an unsung soul and funk hero; he was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose phone number was in Al Green’s, Barry White’s and Eddie Kendricks’ rolodexes, but his talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts. He and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod: that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions.
Marks died of cancer in May 2006. His first album was our Never Satisfied anthology, released posthumously. He stands out as a most mysterious talent to originate from Atlanta, a city that birthed no shortage of genius, and Love Is Gone – The Lost Sessions 1969-1977 further makes the case for a reassessment of his talents and his place in the soul and funk canon.
