Iteration 04 Concept
Concept: Civic prescience from the exterior and view upon approaching the building however when walking through, the design gradually walks the user through the 4 different sequences of breakdance 1. Toprock 2. Downrock 3. Powermove 4. Freeze
The curves are based from the contour lines of the dance moves that were recorded as part of the first chapter of this project

Programme Development and Spatial Concepts
11th October 2022- 18th October 2022
This week was focused on research, developing my parallax and creating spatial forms from my findings.
After further site research (current and surrounding context) I decided I wanted to develop my programme based on Urban dance and the history of Hip Hop/ Street culture.
The genre of Hip Hop is broken down into 4 different elements;
Rap
Deejaying
Graffiti (Graf)
Break Dancing <- Primarily what I want to focus on
Break Dancing tends to follow a 4 step sequence which I plan on incorporating into the form of my structure.
I put together some experiments following my previous work with plaster modelling combined with the Etymology of Break Dancing
Tumblr media
Origins of Break Dancing also dates back to the influence of Gymnastics and MMA
Developing the Ethos of Bruce Lee's "Be Water" into my project with fluidity within the form ("Jeet Kune Do" inspiring big urban dance groups who further paved a way of choreographing for following dancers to this current day)
Tumblr media
I was also interested in the concept of creating curved walls to force the user to almost walk through the sequence of dancing as a response to the style of dance. Sections of the walls recessed to form private nooks for people/ seating space.

[Above showing 3D model initial interior concept of curved wavy wall concept to be further deveoped]

Plans moving forward:
Material and contextual studies on a page
Putting together my research pages and scanning work from sketchbook
Room design process / Massing and arrangements

Week 3 - Further Site Analysis and new chosen site
Tumblr media
This week I focused on finding a site of interest and further developing my Parallax based on my findings.
The site I found most interesting was in an area which predominantly focused on performing arts and movement. From there I decided I wanted to focus my parallax on bodily movement and dance (the transition from one form to another).
Moving forward I decided track bodily movement from a dancer shown below
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feedback and next steps;
Researching into a specific dance genre which follows a specific sequence
Forming spatial concept with contour lines formed from contemporary dance mapping (Plaster Cast)
Continuing design process / Translating body movements > spatial

Initial site analysis
Tuesday 4th October 2022
Tumblr media
This first design week was about creating visual notations and mapping of a chosen site for the project to progress from. Initially I was interested in sound and different floor textures when analysing Omved Gardens. Parallax concept; Based on the juxtaposition between the loud road to observing the drop in noise when entering the site.
Tumblr media
Feedback;
After gathering feedback I was able to realise that I needed to choose a site of significant interest to develop my parallax
For notation making; being more precise in terms of what I am trying to communicate to the reader and factual/empirical recordings as opposed to interpretations
Plan moving forward;
Further site analysis

Tuesday 27th September 2022
Tutorial 1:
This was about looking back at our previous work from year 2 and evaluating things that were and were not so successful in order to carry forward new improvements in future projects.
Goals for Year 3:
A top priority for me this year is being able to produce a portfolio that I am able to recognise as my own as opposed to last year in terms of process and execution.
Understanding the design pipeline and being able to move forward with constructive (> destructive) criticism. Applying the things I learn into my work.
Incorporating and learning more 3D and CAD into my work as well as expanding my comfort zone in terms of 3D Program proficiency.
Consistently documenting my work in and being able to look at it critically to continue improving

Design Site Research
Project 1 - The Parallax Gate
Tumblr media
Highgate
Located between Hamstead Heath and Muswell Hill, Highgate is a suburban area located in the North-Eastern corner of London.
Highgate has a population of 10,713 residents, being the second smallest population of all Haringey Wards, however, 41.8% of Haringey is made up of open space, which is significantly more than the Haringey (25.2%) and London (27.2%) averages.
Highgate is the least densely populated ward in Haringey is substantially below the London average, at 4,254 residents per sq. km (compared to an average of 9,945 in Haringey and 8,742 in London).

Third Year Design Brief
Tumblr media
This year's projects will be divided into 2 different projects;
Project 1 - "The Parallax Gate"
In reference to the areas name, we will start with the ‘Gate’. The ‘Gate’ will be how your ‘suture’ begins to be defined – uncovering and establishing the connections that your chosen site represents and the means through which you are ‘stitching’ the area together.
We will be designing a ‘Parralax Gate’.
Parralax -late 16th century (also in the general sense ‘fact of seeing wrongly’): from French parallaxe, from Greek parallaxis ‘a change’, from parallassein ‘to alternate’, based on allassein ‘to exchange’ (from allos ‘other’)
The Parralax Gate is a mediator between two distinct conditions across your chosen site.
It is a space of exchange and transition from one space to another. This could be from Public to Private ; Hot to Cold ; Under ground to Above Ground ; Verdant to Barren.
Taking one of the sites , you will document this transitions in an interesting and evocative way as a series of drawings and or objects. You will develop a means of representation for your
Parallax gate as a mixed media of drawing model and animation.
It will be composed of a series of objects and/or drawings that represent the change in state(s) that occur across your site. The Parallax Gate gains meaning through how this series of objects/drawings ‘combine’
Project 2 - ‘The Gate House’
The Parallax gate will serve as a way of defining the site, context and project interests.
Project 2 will elaborate on the ideas develop within the Parallax Gate and develop these into a fully-fledged project – the ‘Gatehouse’.
From your research embedded in the Parallax Gate, the Gatehouse will have a more singular focus and a clear client, brief and programme which we will develop aligned to your own project interests.
For example, should your Parallax Gate focus on the micro climate changes across your site, your ‘Gatehouse’ becomes a weather station or an active participant in addressing ongoing climate change.
If your Parallax gate looks at transitions of Public to Private perhaps your ‘Gatehouse’ could be a commentary of the on the famous Celeb households and illustrious denizens of Highgate

Introduction
My name is Viet Anh Trieu and I am a 3rd Year Architecture Student, studying in London.
My interest lay mostly in 3D and 2D visual artwork and Architecture (main influences being Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kaws, Takeshi Murakami to Architect, John Lautner and many more).
On this Tumblr account I plan to document my Year 3 Architectural design progress to see how they develop over time, with plenty of work.
I am open to constructive feedback/ criticism so if you have any questions or tips, I am open to receiving them on my ask page HERE
