Rose stared out at the beach before her. Her face expressionless, tired, showing her lack of sleep. It had been a good couple of days since she'd found solid sleep without the nightmares invading her sleep. The waves crashed against the shoreline and Rose turned away. She didn't come back to her home world to stand about and admire the scenery, she had work to do.

Rose teleported away from the chilled sea breeze to the warmer air of central London's U.N.I.T. Headquarters.

Using her own UNIT pass, Rose had quietly infiltrated her home world's UNIT quite easily. Having interacted with UNIT before when the stars were going out, it was easy to get what she needed. Using their instruments, Rose was not happy to discover the degradation to Pete's World was also happening in the Doctor's world albeit at a slower rate than Pete's. Her arrival had caused a detectable blip, but otherwise there didn't seem to be much more harm than there was already taking place.

She needed to find the Doctor somehow. She broadcast her message again. Hoping the Doctor would see it this time.

"Keelah!" Tali shouts as she reaches out to swat the Doctor's hand away from the dismantled pieces of geth technology. "Don't mess with that!"

With a weary sigh, she opens her omnitool, activating additional firewalls on it before scanning the pieces, "I haven't had a chance to ensure that they're all fully disabled and harmless. If geth processes are still active in any piece, they could reactivate and hijack other technology."

It's not something that she's thrilled about doing in the first place, bringing back pieces of geth technology from Haestrom for her father after everything she's been through… everything she's lost. But orders are orders, and she will do her duty for the fleet, even if she's wary of why her father wants the technology to begin with.

Glowing eyes narrow behind her semi-transparent faceplate as she looks over the data streams, shaking her head in thought. "I don't have time to check every piece right now. We should be nearing the relay soon, so we'll have to drop out of FTL to make the jump back into the Terminus systems…"

JD was of the mindset that if you thought something was complement-worthy, you should say something. It was a very easy way to potentially make someone’s day; to uplift their spirits. As someone who enjoyed making other people smile, this was something he tried to do often, doing his best to read the situation and person quickly beforehand so as not to make them uncomfortable. It didn’t always work out the way he wanted, but he did his best.

This woman, he had high hopes for. She seemed confident, even while looking around for something, waving her---wand? Was that a wand? Sure, why not---waving her wand about. JD was fairly certain that she would be accepting of a compliment, and maybe even his help, if he offered it. 

“Excuse me, ma’am? I just wanted to say I really like your outfit. And you’ve got a very cool...uh...” Crap, he just realized he doesn’t actually know what it’s called. “...ear...thing...” He pointed at the shell of his ear in the hopes that that would help her understand what he meant. That piece wasn’t called an earring still, was it? “Yeah. Did you, uh...did you lose something? I’ve got time, if you want some help looking for it,” he offers with a shrug. She can take it or leave it---he’ll back right off if she wants him to.

In silence, he's watching her for a minute. The Doctor, the person who travels through time and space and saves millions of people. She has to make tough decisions but this? He had not seen it coming, had never thought she would be capable of such a thing. He had been sourly mistaken.

"But you did do it." Elio finally says while looking her directly in the eyes. "You are the smartest person I've ever met and you knew what the consequences were but you did it anyway. Why? You say it all the time, there's always another way! So why?"

Your prolific catalogue kept me going through the worst year of my life and I cannot thank you enough for giving me a tiny escape in the misery of 2021. Do you think Alice would survive Toby’s world? Or would Toby’s world survive Alice?

Since Alice is (mostly) human, and the part of her that isn't human isn't fae, I think she and Toby's world would totally ignore each other. She'd live a perfectly normal life, never quite realizing that Faerie was there.

Now, if you wanted to do a Toby-universe InCryptid AU, the easiest path would be to make the Covenant a merlin organization that hunts changelings and fae foolish enough to get spotted by humans. Make Fran, who was never quite human to begin with, Dochas Sidhe--possibly a fullblood, abandoned at the carnival exactly as in canon. That gives you an Alice who's as indestructible as Toby is, and opens lots and lots of awful doors.

Faerie Shenanigans

October Daye Theory under the cut.

Just a slightly disturbing thought (it would be disturbing for all characters involved)...

Toby seems just as powerful as August even though she still has some humanity left. If anything, there are things she does that we don't know yet whether August can do, and whether she can do them as well as October. Toby can do these things despite having absolutely nobody to teach her how.

It's kind of weird for someone who's still a changeling to be potentially more powerful than her full fae sister. She was even able to fight against her blood being changed as a child. I don't think we have any other example of anybody at all being able to fight their blood being changed. It could be a Dochas Sidhe thing, but it's still impressive if she was still able to fight past the point where the balance of her blood was mostly human.

You know what changelings we've seen who are more powerful than expected? The ones who turned out to be Titania's children and therefore First Borns.

But we already know Amandine is a First Born herself, and that Toby's father was a human.

Or do we?

Here's the theory: If Oberon was human for most of the time he was missing, and did not remember himself for most of that time, and if he was cycling like Titania was, one lifetime after another, who's to say Amandine didn't go and play fairy bride with her own father, with neither of them having any way of realizing it?

Toby couldn't see or detect Titania at all until she revealed herself. It's entirely possible Amandine would not have detected Oberon or his parentage in Toby when she was shifting her blood, and did not realize that the human blood she was drawing from in Toby was from Janet only, and not Jonathan.

October's grand father might also be her father. And boy can you imagine how unimpressed she'd be if she found THAT out.

On the upside, she'd be able to call the Sea Witch "Big Sis". Whether she'd survive it is another story, but it wouldn't be a lie.

Thess vs The Heart of Faerie

Keeping in mind that I'm only done with Be The Serpent (waiting for the Toby Daye books to come out in paperback in the UK is a trial), I have another theory. Yes, it's going under a cut, just in case, because spoilers:

What if Toby is effectively destined to seal the wound made when the Three came into being?

In The Brightest Fell, the Luidaeg stated that it was said that Amandine's line was the only way to make right what Oberon and his Queens made wrong. Which ... I mean, as of Be The Serpent, there is a lot that the Three made wrong, and while it's tempting to think that it's the whole "bringing back the Roane" thing from The Unkindest Tide that was meant by that ... that's only Titania responsible for that; not all three of them. And in And With Revelling, the novella at the end of When Sorrows Come, the Luidaeg gave two blessings to the couple - one the traditional one, and one of her own. That one was: "when the time comes, may you stand before the Heart of Faerie with no regrets and no remorse for the choices you have made. May you keep each other as close as you can, and never forget who you are".

Toby's having some practice in remembering who she actually is as of the last chapter of Be The Serpent, obviously. But the Luidaeg talked about Toby standing before the Heart of Faerie like it was a given. Not an "if", but a "when". The Luidaeg never deals in absolutes unless she's really certain, because she literally can't, because insofar as her geas goes, being wrong is a lie, and she can't lie.

And the Luidaeg, as Toby herself stated when Cassandra and Karen had the visions that started off the whole mess in Be The Serpent, is a Seer.

The other thing we learn in Be The Serpent is that the Three caused a wound in the world when they came into being. I presume that wound is in the Heart of Faerie, which is what birthed them. So they had to throw a human at it once every seven years, to staunch the bleeding. It would reject the Three, eventually, if either of them tried. But we've been hearing for several books now that Faerie makes what it needs when Firstborn or the Three have children. Most recently it was in Be The Serpent, again, when the Luidaeg said that the Bridge Trolls and the Gean-Canna were born of Maeve's line needing to go to war. And Amandine was born after Maeve's failed Ride - had to have been, because Oberon took Janet Carter to his bed after she broke the Ride. So ... what does Amandine and her tiny line of Dochas Sidhe have that Faerie needs?

A living hope chest? Sure, definitely - without some kind of guidance from the Three or the Firstborn, the various lines of Faerie are a mess of conflicts between the blood of Titania and the blood of Maeve. Also, the Fae aren't precisely fertile, so having someone who could make changelings into purebloods would keep Faerie going without some of those conflicts, never mind soothing the madness of people like the unnamed Queen, and possibly Oleander and Devin. But that can't be all of it.

But then ... then there's the healing. Toby doesn't just heal herself, after all. When Sorrows Come and Be The Serpent had her giving her blood to let blood-workers - the kind of people who could borrow her blood and use its magic - heal themselves, too. Magic is in the blood. But where it comes from... The Fae get their magic from their Firstborn, who get their magic from the Three. And the Three get their magic from the Heart that created them. You can't tell me that a ... manifestation, entity, whatever the Heart of Faerie is ... that created Oberon, Titania, and Maeve, and gave enough of its magic to make gods wouldn't be able to borrow the healing power of the blood of a Dochas Sidhe.

Thing is ... no Fae has ever been called to staunch the wound. Maeve went to plug the hole for awhile, but it would push her out eventually (and I believe we're still assuming Marcia is Maeve, so that's already happened). I imagine it would do similar to any Fae, but sooner. After all, there has to be a reason that they only used mortals. I mean, I guess partially because mortals were expendable, but if it were possible, wouldn't Titania have stolen a child of Maeve for the sacrifice every time? Titania hated Maeve enough to try to slaughter all her descendents, after all, and Oberon wasn't stopping her from any of that shit, because Oberon's an asshole.

But Toby's got mortal blood. Not much anymore ... but maybe enough to keep her in the wound long enough to bleed enough to seal it. Between the mortality and the magic, she could conceivably close the wound properly, stabilise Faerie for good, and maybe survive the experience. No more need for Rides, no more of whatever bullshit the wound at the Heart of Faerie causes.

Either way, it looks like the Luidaeg, right down at her core, expects Toby to have to try.

Is there a chance Toby will give birth to an actual cat

Amandine shifted August's blood while in the womb - might Toby's body automatically shift her children's blood, or might they shift their own pre-birth?

Cait sidhe move easily between two states - maybe her kids will be able to shift between nearly pureblood Dochas Sidhe and nearly pureblood Cait Sidhe when convenient as easily as regular Cait Sidhe shift between human and cat forms

Toby and August are direct children of Amandine and seem to be her equals in regeneration - I wonder if their descendants, even if shifted to pure Dochas Sidhe, will still be so unbreakable or if it'll get watered down. There's mentions that being a direct child of a Firstborn means something, even compared to others of your species

Sorry I'm still stuck on there being a non-0 chance Toby's kid will be a cat. Imagine one of those Christmas card photos where a couple is posing with their cat instead of a child except for Toby and Tybalt the cat is the child. I would draw this if I had the ability

I picked Thirteen for Luci because I wanted to send one from all four of my blogs but IT... WORKS? NEW SHIP JUST DROPPED!

This one intrigues me because I never in a million years would have thought about this as a ship. It's interesting because Luci can be very...princessy. But she can also be the dragon. And I can see a kind of correlation between Luci and Missy when she's at her worst. Kind of like the Doctor watching a trainwreck. Actually we come back to our old Melissa/Missy plot where there's the good, and then there's the not good. Hm.

Since normies are still bigger in population, it's rather obvious that you're from that school. To keep them (normies) calm from the sight of outcasts, werewolves are told to wear the muzzles. The muzzles well.. Muzzle is long, so that means any posturing is cut short because distance is made from both werewolves. It's also there to make sure that a provoked werewolf in public can't do much harm other than scratch Its mostly a publicity stunt but can be a disadvantage during fights or a punishment in general.
