made a guide for myself on how i wanna draw the mercs! started with just trying to distinctify all the bald white men, but i decided to finish it out. some are more inspired by headcanons, some are closer to canon!

Semi-random scene analysis time. I honestly always liked this scene, and it took me a bit to figure out why, but I think I got it.
First off, just aesthetically, *chef's kiss*. The mussed up helmet hair looks adorable on all three of them, the outfits are on point, I'm literally just now noticing that I think the Steiners have matching backpacks (their commitment to the bit is insane and wonderful), it's all great.
Second...it's just funny. And charming. Ethan and Aiden ping-ponging the conversation between each other for a second without even letting Scott get a word in is fun, and the delivery of "This is about you being the target of demonic ninjas." "You mean the demonic ninjas who pulled swords out of their chests and kicked our asses?" "Yeah! Those demonic ninjas!" was pitch perfect. I feel like Charlie and Max don't get enough credit for how well they bounce off each other because it's assumed they would be good at it, when in actuallity I've met more than one set of identical twins who SUCK at that.
Lastly, it might be me reading too much into things, but I do think this scene is a great example of characterization through limited dialgoue and action. A line that stands out to me is "Since this is our first experience with demonic ninjas, we're thinking we should play it safe." The use of the plural pronoun is very telling to me, because I'd be willing to bet even thinking of protecting Scott was Ethan's idea, and yet he always uses the 'we' pronoun because he and Aiden are an inseperable team.
It's something I feel S3 really did right: distinctifying Ethan and Aiden into their own people without sacrificing their bond to each other. I feel like a lot of fiction that introduces twins as minor characters just makes them a unit without much distinction between them (hell, Harry Potter did it twice, for instance), but despite the Steiners literally having a merged form, the show made an effort to show how they're very different, yet still complementary people. They could be simplified to the brains and the brawn, but even that straightforward premise tells us a lot about how they've survived as long as they have and presumably a contributor to Deucalion recruiting them. It also makes Aiden's death all the more heartbreaking the more you realize how important they were to each other.
I'm getting a little off-topic here, but the point is that simple interactions like this can darastically shape a character and I feel as though that's underappreciated. Especially when it comes to already underrated characters like the Steiners.
On a last, less serious note, I appreciate that the three werewolves with miraculous healing abilities all still practice proper motorcycle safety and wear helmets, gloves, and long sleeves. Unironically love that for them.

did ggn have any sort of distinctifying clothing/feature in canon or fanon? (Ex. Bolas canon has gas masks, Soulfire fanon has firey cloaks & scarves)
Cuz if they didn't I think it would be rly cool if their little distinctifying clothing bit was bandanas around their foreheads or eyes (like etoiles's eye mask and fit's bandana)

Hi Kia! Sorry to ask but why you don't draw Dream's actual Canon design when drawing him? I noticed that your version is quite different
ive always had personal gripes with how the redesign was made and i dont wanna get into it because i will get Squeezed by the people who obsess over canon dt 😒
so yeah, i just slightly modify his design in my work
it helps distinctify my work from what's considered canon since i rewrite aspects of dreamtale all the time anyway......
also its just fun! i love making slightly different alterations to designs
i like to imagine that dream sews all his own clothes and is actually quite talented and fashionable in that regard. he likes to look pretty with variety but still consistent :p

Can we get a review on one of the newest Pokémon that was just revealed? Like say Armarouge and Ceruledge please?
Tumblr media
(You guys know the drill; special review today for the new 'mons, then back on the first-come-first-served schedule after that.)
Tumblr media
Quick note before we get into the design: For some reason I've seen people criticize both of these guys for being "too humanoid" or "too Megamanish" (that's a word don't @ me)... which I don't really get. They're no more humanoid than Gallade, Throh and Sawk, Bisharp, etc. If you personally don't like that aesthetic that's fine, but this is nothing new. Even the Mega Man aesthetic was kind of in place already with Falinks.
Anyway, between these two, I like Ceruledge better than Armarouge. Armarouge is fine for what it is, but some elements just look too awkward for my tastes. The patterning on the legs and arms are neat and appropriate for the cannon theme, but the complete lack of anatomy in said limbs is very distracting to me (though granted, I'm not sure how many people would immediately notice it has no feet, knees, or fingers outside of the one thumb).
I'm also not a huge fan of the armor being yellow; something about that color makes it look very plastic-y. I think I would've rather seen a more maroon-ish color there, seeing as Ceruledge has blue skin with purple armor. The huge shoulders are also distracting; they look good when it's actually using its cannons, but bulky and awkward in the default resting pose here.
Tumblr media
There are things I like—the entire head looks pretty cool, for instance—and it's by no means bad. It just feels like Ceruledge has all of the good elements Armarouge does without the awkwardness.
Side note: It appears to be part psychic-type because it's a nod to psychological warfare via El Cid, which is definitely one of the more interesting things Pokemon types have referenced.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Ceruledge, right off the bat it improves a few things. First, the Gumby-style limbs are gone in favor of "boots" around the legs, and it has freaking swords instead of arms, which is always a win in my book. Likewise, the armor is a lot less bulky because it doesn't have the cannon theme, making it more streamlined.
On top of that, it still has many of the good elements of Armarouge. For example, I love the heads on these guys; the mask-like look is super cool, especially with the three "eyes" and the horns on the side, and I love how their flames form a ponytail at the top, almost like a gladiator.
My only thing is that I wonder if the blue couldn't afford to be lightened a few shades; I feel like some of the detail in the torso is lost with it being so low-contrast. Also, I question if the bit of energy coming from both their eyes was really needed. Otherwise, it's solid.
Final side note: I love that these two have opposite fighting styles, with Armarouge being noble and heroic and Ceruledge being underhanded (almost to the point that I'm surprised it's not part dark-type instead of ghost-type). Adding different personalities helps distinctify the two even more.
So overall, while both designs have good elements going for them, I feel like Ceruledge is the better of the two, as it has all of the good parts of Armarouge but has a less clunky design as a whole. Regardless, they're both pretty cool.

week 2
despite the fact that i've been far less alone/lonely this semester, i have been thinking about loneliness a lot lately.
i love my friends dearly. i love to spend time with them. it's solace from a strange normality, and feels more real to me than most of the things i do.
but i enjoy solitude as well. when i am totally on my own, i feel like i'm a part of something a lot bigger than me.
for my autophilosophy class we just read the beginning of "The Lonely City" by Olivia Laing which talked about the paradox of feeling exposed and alone at the same time in the city. this made me realize a lot about how i've been feeling. i don't think i mind the exposure part all that much. the problem for me is that being with people and not being with people are impossible to distinctify, because you are likely always with people in some form.
especially in my apartment––loud neighbors upstairs and downstairs who aren't trying to be loud, they just also live in this creaky, rubbery apartment complex. i love them but what it leads to is me questioning how alone i really am. i don't think being alone is just a mindset; i do think i can feel the presence of people close by me, whether i'm on the street or in my stairwell.
over the break when i had the apartment to myself, i blasted music. i was having a great time, but then as it got later i turned it down. had i been in a house or something, i would've turned it up more probably. and i like caring for the people around me. i don't know if that's a caveat to my main point or if i'm turning around as i'm writing this.
and in class when we discussed the whole idea of being alone, i felt alone in our discussion (not in a bad way or anything). everything people said was usually quite opposite to how i felt. there were like four or five people in a row who all said the same thing about not liking being recognized on the street in their hometowns, and how the city offers them an alternative. i love that about being home. i like that when i'm in my backyard, i know that it's just me and everything/no-one else, and when i'm in the harbor on a nice day, i can run into several groups of people who i know and can talk to. so it was interesting to hear how many people did not feel this way.
i get it. there is something nice about anonymity. but i'm not sold on it and i don't think i ever will be. you are still among people no matter where you are in the city––the city is a person. so it's hard for me to present as/feel like no one when there are so many someones around me.

and the gym battle WAS one of those ones that was just as cool as i remembered it, so that was fun.
notes from my notes app again:
confidence on the episode's part of just one match-up.. meowstic x2 VS frogadier and talonflame it's also an interesting choice in combination, since frogadier and talonflame have never really worked together all that often. (talonflame has also generally had bad luck in gym battles…) it's a good pick tho because switching between the two of them fighting separately and fighting together works really well and is fun to watch
pikachu's use as a timepiece… it's trainers and pokémon fulfilling different roles. as well-established in xy, ash is terrible at keeping rhythm, so it's a skill deficit pikachu can fill in for. it's also just nice to give him something to do while on the sidelines.
olympia doesn't have to distinctify between which meowstic she's issueing commands to. which makes sense.
rule of threes of futute sight, 1 to get caught offguard by, 1 to get the timing down, and 1 that can be predicted

this year for artfight i wanna try and diversify my faces a bit more. like i think the issue is with my artstyle more than anything but my faces always look kinda samey to me and its hard to distinctify them well without it looking weird in the style. but i will try and draw characters that look a bit different to what i normally draw to practice

When I was a kid, there was this one noun I'd seen and assumed was pronounced 'dash hound,' which I had distinctified from a noun I had heard and guessed was spelled "doxxon"... I thought they referred to two related but different breeds of dog.

Director's commentary on this scene from You're Okay:
Omi fell into step behind the two big cats, only his feet making noise compared to their soft paw pads built for silent intimidation and stealth. Out of his periphery, he could see the shapes of other cats coming out to gaze at the procession curiously. Tigers and tigers and, oh my, more tigers. Dark panthers that looked like shadows until they blinked their deep golden eyes. Regal lions with great manes that they wore like crowns about their necks. Even a couple of lionesses that appeared to spectate (curious, normally didn’t see any of them outside in the field).
One point in the path brought Omi past a place where a trio of tigers stood. One he recognized as the more rugged form of the wolf pelt clad berserker, the other the more streamlined feline form of the red garbed warrior woman. The third was less familiar to him. Perhaps one of the other numerous reserve cats he didn’t interact or battle with regularly.
The unfamiliar tiger lowered its head, lifting it’s lip to expose its fangs and letting out a low growl deep down in its throat as Omi passed. Only to jerk back when the berserker tiger let out a bellowing roar right in its ear, and the warrior tigress snapped her massive fangs less than an inch from its nose with such a loud clash of teeth it was like sharp thunder. The third tiger quailed, tail tucked between its legs as it slunk away from the procession.
The two remaining tigers chuffed with equal parts derision and amusement at one another. The young bloods were so presumptuous. Just a couple centuries under their master’s lead and they thought they had enough seniority to try and intimidate a welcome guest. Especially their leader’s future right hand.
Writing the Fallen Warriors is always an exercise in creativity and individuality, mainly because there’s just so little we actually know about them. I think personal interpretation has the biggest influence. Balancing their individuality as warriors and people vs their loyalty towards Chase from whatever happened in the past to bring them to his side. Especially when you consider they must rarely, if ever, talk in their own voices nowadays.
Making headcanons of how their hierarchy within the lair is fun in its own right too! (I definitely headcanon that Chase has lionesses among the numbers, but they’re the ones he most trusts to keep an eye on things when he’s away and keep watch on his inner sanctum.
I think there’s definitely stratified tiers, inner circles and territory disputes and seniority among the ranks. Modern Cats having different views than the ones who’ve been around since ancient times. And the concept that a lot of them have a soft spot for Omi because they expect what Chase does, that he’ll eventually join the lot of them. So the idea any of their own would be in any way threatening is grounds for a metaphorical dragging by the ear.
I like to think that, after a while, Omi has the ability to sort of distinctify the different Jungle Cats by small tells. Like how he could pick out the differences between Kimiko and a shapeshifting robot. Not always 100%, but he can tell with the ones he knows the most.

I would love to read your thoughts on raltz and kirlia.
(For anyone curious, I already did Gardevoir over here and Gallade over here.)
Tumblr media
I'm a big fan of the more abstract Pokemon designs and Ralts is a nice addition to those. It does a good job at being kid-like without being overly cutesy or overly human-like. The little oversized "dress" is adorable and the little bowl cut that covers its face/the horn position is unique to it and helps distinctify it from its evos. Interestingly, it does have eyes under there, you just can't see them most of the time:
Tumblr media
The only thing I don't care for is that spiky bit at the back of the dress. The rest of the design is very flowy and rounded, so the sudden spikiness there feels a bit off. Aside from that, it's solid.
Tumblr media
Kirlia is, at least in my opinion, a really good example of how to do a middle evo. It 100% fits between Ralts and Gardevoir (and Gallade) but doesn't look like a fusion between them. Instead, while Ralts has the bowl cut thing and Gardevoir has an elegant dancer theme to it, Kirlia has more of a ballerina vibe to it. The dress in particular is really specific to it, neither being an oversized sheet like Ralts or a long flowing dress like Gardevoir's.
There are also some nice design details in there, such as the perfectly distributed colors--red to draw attention to the horns and the eyes as an accent, green "hair" that's then complimented by the green body, and a simple white base to break it up. Likewise, the shape of the hair is mimicked by the shape of the dress, which is a nice touch.
If I had one critique for this line as a whole, it would be that the 'dex entries for each stage feel fairly repetitive, just sort of getting at the same ideas of emotions, dancing, and ripping holes in the space-time-continuum. Not that those are bad, just that fleshing each stage out to have more distinct personalities or traits would help them stand out on their own a bit more.
Aside from that, these two are solid and a good start for the line.

RE HOW BIGHIT MARKETS BTS
Tumblr media
Thanks for the question dear.
Marketing is for a lot of things but in BTS's case, I'd say the primary goal of marketing them is to expose the entire group and or the individual members to an audience, a particular audience at a time, to brand them in a way that makes them appealing to that target market- to put it simply.
During one of the recent run episodes, when Jimin performed his dance from Serendipity- which I must say, God he is breathtakingly beautiful when he dances. Serendipity and the choreo is my weakness. If I see anything better than that- hold on, there's filter too. Ayayaya.
Stream Serendipity and Filter🔪
Oh and did y'all see JM's bit in Film out? Omg! I'm afraid I'd have to fly to South K to kiss his talented ass morning, afternoon, evening.
Who's coming?
Anywho, when Jimin performed Serendipity on Run and suggested that was the dance the staff was performing, the members- cough RM, quickly pointed out how he was plugging, self promoting (to Run's target audience)
Run has a different demographic.
When Suga talked about them not being funny on their Let's BTS show on KBS the Host pointed out how they were actually funny in their Run episodes.
A lot of Army(who are already fans of BTS or each individual member) watch Run but not all who watch Run are Army or even listen to BTS songs. So any performance of an individual's music or choreo would attract such a 'unique' viewer who might go on to become that member's stan or bias etc.
Similarly, when a member embarks on a solo project they are exposed to a new or unique audience. That's where most of the solo stans come from.
For V, his fanbase are not just made up of people who enjoy him as a musician but as an actor as well.
He has a strong fanbase in SK outside of 'Army' because of his exposure to the Korean market beyond BTS and this comprises of his musical collaborations with Korean Artists and film companies such as his OST Sweet Night on the series Itaewon class.
It's the same with Suga and IU, his Agust D mixtapes which draws in audiences that are not necessarily into boybands, RM's Mono whixh attracts strong hiphop fans, Jimin's dance collaborations with Taemin for example and his contemporary dance performance which attracts people in the world of contemporary dance and ballet- point in case the black swan performance at the end of the year, Jin and Hobi's MCing etc.
All these projects exposes them to unique audiences and markets outside of Army or BTS's own fanbase.
And I think the best way to understand how this is important or how this affects BigHit's marketing approach is to look at their recent YouQuiz interviews.
Jimin, Jhope and JK were paired to attract aspiring dancers or persons who want to be dancers and learn from these three dance leaders of BTS- or at least they were paired to appeal to them in my opinion.
Tae and RM were equally paired to appeal to creatives and creative minds and persons who are more into composing and writing lyrics and are full of passion and musical geniuses.
Jin and Suga were paired to appeal to mature audiences.
Ten out of ten when any pair is paired in BTS it is for marketing reasons to appeal to certain fanbase or audiences and are often strategic moves unless of course it's to balance things out to not create the impression they are promoting subunits within the group in furtherance of the BTS kumbaya agenda- Team over units or solos.
So Jikook are not gonna be allowed to sit together all the time even if they want to, neither would JinKook, or Sope.
They shake and reshuffle sometimes.
And like Tae said in his 2018 VLive, the company decides who they collaborate in or what market to promote them in.
Tae was allowed to collaborate with Adora on his Chrismas song but not Jimin- which to me is very homophobic but it goes to show the company has a say in who they work with and most importantly which market they work in.
For JK, he's been working his way within the American marke and building a strong fanbase internationally from his English covers of Justin Bieber, Troye Sivan, to his collaboration with Charlie Puth, and most recently Jason Derulo in Savage love- that's a lot of English speaking fanbase he's attracting and appealing to outside of Army.
Tae's English mixtape would achieve a similar feat and draw in a lot of English speaking fans.
Bts did the same with dynamite and coldplay's Fix you.
So by allowing JK to work with renowned Japanese Artists and film companies, collaborating and composing original sound tracks for them such as his Your eyes tell OST, Film out, etc. he is appealing to and drawing in a Japanese audience.
As Hobi explained in his 2019 January Vlive, their mixtapes, solo projects, collaborations with Artists outside of BTS are all ways for them to expand their fanbase individually and build their portfolio.
And these new fans are mostly going to be solo stans who stan him for his music composing abilities but of course some may fall in love with BTS as well and go on to become Army so it's a win win situation.
WOULDN'T THE OTHERS OBJECT
Yes and no.
As long as the company isn't pushing him as a soloist outside of BTS and creating a separate brand with him outside of BTS's own brand I don't think the boys would object to it.
That was the problem they had/have with Jikook. In my opinion.
The company branding Jikook, distinctifying them from the group as a 'couple' subunit, selling their chemistry to fans and advertisers really doesn't and didn't sit well with the group. AT ALL.
In my opinion of course.
You can't create a brand within a brand.
It goes against Bang PD's own objective of prioritizing the team over all else which is what sold the members in the first place.
I just think in JK's case, since 2020, they are just trying to help him find himself and his bearing and his purpose.
He's been trying to find himself since 2020 and he'd talked about losing his passion and had had his passion hijacked and commercialized by the company.
He used to say he didn't know what he was going to do with himself and his life and career after BTS- having him work on music videos, directing, composing, reading these are all ways that they are doing right by him if you ask me.
They are helping him not trying to push their own agendas- which is not to say they might not change their minds about it in the future.
JK is an artist being managed by the company and they owe a duty to him to make the right business decisions for him with his consent- can't stress on the consent bit enough.
Personally, I'm happy about Japan because they are and are shaping out to be queer friendly and have a bit of progressive laws and conducive environments for queer artists to flourish in- if coming out would ruin their careers that's one less worry.
Which by the way I hate anyone who peddles this 'coming out will ruin their careers' nonsense because I can tell you one hundred percent that that is rooted in homophobia and it's not OK.
Don't tell that to no queer people shut up. You are not helping.
I know some say that out of genuine concerns for the boys but PLEASE DON'T. Don't use fear to keep queer people hidden and out of sight. Don't promote closet safety. Rhetorics like that only perpetuate queer invisibility and homophobia- do I need to spell it out to your liberal homophobic ass?!
Coming out is entirely up to them regardless of the risk you think is involved. If they want to take it. They'll take it. It's their choice to make regardless of whatever consequence.
That there are or should be consequences is a problem in of itself.
I don't want to hear 'if JK comes out he's been stupid and reckless and putting Jimin's career at risk'
'If he loves Jimin he wouldn't come out'
Tumblr media
Go ahead kiss it😌
If he wants to stay closested respect it. If he wants to come out RESPECT IT TOO.
Support him either ways goddammit!
Y'all gone get me bothered like that huh.
JK POTENTIALLY WITHOUT JIMIN
They both have different career objectives.
I know Jimin says JK is imitating him but chilee JK is his own person. Lol.
Jimin plays too much.
He has his own aspirations.
Tumblr media
In 2014 Jimin posted this Christmas song he did with JK. In 2020 he posted his own Christmas song without Jk.
It's not hard to see where his interests in music lie as a musician.
JK covered We don't talk anymore by himself and later did a collaboration with Jimin on the same song. He's done Fools with RM- see where I'm going with this?
Suga said he was more likely to write pop songs for JK but write dance songs for Jimin.
Jk said in the Be interviews bang PD advised him to consider dance performances when writing songs as he himself is a dancer too and need to incorporate in his compositions.
They are two distinct artists and at some point it would become necessary to brand, promote and encourage their uniqueness in their professional lives. They don't got to be tethered to each other all the time.
Personally, I don't think BigHit would want to push official subunits within BTS- yet and it's inclination towards Jikook have always been because of their marketing appeal rather than to further a career objective for both of them.
This goes back to the pairing objectives I talked about earlier. If they are going to pair Jikook professionally as an official subunit within the group it wouldn't be because they are a couple and ought to be together all the time but because it is smart for them to do so business wise.
If their pairing isn't commercially profitable they won't be paired at all- unless of course Jikook themselves want and request to be paired in that way. Know what I mean?
They each signed separate contracts with the company from day dot. They didn't sign on as a unit.
Whether or not they've decided they are a package deal I cannot say- yet, as their new contract just came into effect.
We would have to observe how they are being handled by the company going forward.
HE'D NEVER DO IT WOULD HE
Come now sis...
Tumblr media
It's not like he's leaving Jimin😅
Jimin and Jhope were equally sent to Japan for promotion purposes without JK.
Out of all seven, Namjoon is the most promoted member in the international Market not just because he speaks English but because he is often made the spokes person for the group in interviews, at awards straight up to the UN.
Look how happy they all were and how chatty they were at the KBS Let's BTS interview.
I mean they all talked about it. About how they can't say much on foreign forums and often step into Namjoon's shadows.
RM is the most recognized and dare I say the most liked member out of all seven in the international market outside Army and their music profession.
In Japan they all have a chance to be front and center at interviews etc.
It just so happens that JK as it stands is the one member pushing to build a portfolio within that market.
Let's pray he gets mainstream and build a strong presence within the music industry there because we all know he's gonna drag Jimin up there with him😏
Just pay attention to the songs he's written and the parts Jimin sings in them- he makes Jimin shine on those songs.
They have so much potential my God.
Let's support them individually and as a unit.
I purple you and sorry I had to respond here.
Stay gold. Let's keep supporting and rooting for our guys.
Signed,
GOLDY
