Tumblr media
like kaiser, ness would be so pressed that your ex would even have the audacity to so much as even think of you. but unlike kaiser, ness would not be trying to throw hands: bro would just be gaslighing your ex into thinking he can't stand a chance against him.
you met ness online, trying to learn german through an anonymous messaging forum: where he was trying to learn your native language. the both of you had no clue who the other was, becoming online friends for years, long before you had ever even met your ex.
when your ex came into your life, ness noticed that you were online less and less. when asked, you gave the sheepish answer that your boyfriend didn't support you learning german, not wanting you to know a language that he didn't.
despite the red flag that was, and all his other warning signs, you stayed with him. you still learned german, now only messaging your pen pal when your lover slept or was away.
but, one day, you came home to your (now ex) boyfriend sitting on the couch. he found out you were still messaging ness, and he was mad.
it lead to a blow-out fight, you ended up having to flee and stay with a friend, collecting your stuff over a week while he was at work. you never saw him again.
eventually, you finished learning german. after a long discussion, ness agreed to meet you at the airport. the second you touched down in berlin, you rushed out the gates to see that cute boy with caramel hair and magenta tips holding your name on a sign. that would be the man you'd come to love so very dearly.
eventually, you and ness moved in together in germany, for his soccer career. you returned home with him for the holidays, to visit family.
as ness and you walked hand in hand through the streets of your hometown, bantering idly in german, you stumbled across a face you thought you'd never see again.
"ah, i see that i was right to not want you to learn german..." his voice said from a little further away, eyes glaring at the two of you. you instantly stiffened, and ever perceptive ness instantly figured out what was happening, muttering a quiet "verdammt" under his breath.
as your ex sauntered closer, ness wordlessly stood in front of you. though he wasn't the most imposing figure, you could see his distaste written plainly on his face, sneering at your ex.
"you left me for a german terrier... i see your standards really lowered..." your ex mumbled, chuckling as he glanced at ness. "keep it up, just try me schwein..." ness threatened, squaring his shoulders.
this went back and forth enough until ness had finally barked out enough insults with that near-crazed look on his face that had him shaking his head and storming away.
your boyfriend, turned to you, like a dog awaiting praise. it had you giggling and cupping his face to press scattered kisses along his cheeks. "thank you, mein held..."
"anything for you, mein schätzchen. i'd do it for you in a heartbeat..."
Tumblr media
karasu would be smug at first before quickly getting annoyed. he would want to throw hands, shoving the guy away and mocking him, probably gets the cops called on him. at least he doesn't look bad in cuffs ig??
when karasu was introducing you to a group of fans who watch bllktv, you didn't expect to see your ex. "wow, y/n, what are you now... a gold-digger?" he taunts, stepping into your view.
your boyfriend was off to the side, signing things, blissfully unaware to your torment as his back was turned to you. so, you decided to be the bigger person and just ignore him.
your ex was one of those run-of-the-mill revenge people, would make fun of you at any given chance now that you were separated. you don' even remember why you broke up, probably some snide comment of his that ticked you off. but one thing about him was that he hated being ignored.
karasu, who heard a guy's voice and figured you were getting hit on. he knows that you're a catch, and he trusts you, so usually he lets you humble people on your own unless things get out of hand. well, things got out of hand.
he spun around when he heard you yelp, eyes meeting the hand that gripped your shoulder. in an instant he was shoving your ex away from you, guiding you so gently behind him that it contrasted with the same movement he had used against your ex.
"trash shouldn't touch treasure." he spits, glaring down as you ex stumbles on his feet. just like that, with a shout, your ex charges back at karasu.
like a professional, karasu throws him back again, this time with more force. but desperation does something to inhibition and your ex lunges back again, sending a punch across your boyfriend's face.
karasu just chuckles, wiping the blood from his nose as he grabs your ex's collar with one hand and socks him with the other, sending him to the ground.
they continue this one-sided fighting until flashes of blue and red flare in the corner of your peripheral. then they're both in cuffs and all three of you including those fans from earlier are being questioned.
then, karasu walks away from his cops, rubbing his now-restraint-free wrists as he saunters up to you with that coy smirk. "hey there pretty thing, your jailbird's back..."
he's taken aback as you jump into his arms, hugging him tight as your hands hold him like he was fragile. he just smiles, wrapping his arms around you and kissing he side of your head with a gentle affection.
"hey now, don't cry. i'd gladly get cuffed again for keeping you safe."
Tumblr media
otoya is another smug one, but unlike karasu he is not eager to be fighting. otoya's smart and knows just what to do, plays innocent if it ever gets to the point where cops come in.
of all people in the world, otoya has certainly had his share of running into an unpleasant ex. he's the one who will understand you best, which is why he stands next to you with a cocky grin as your ex desperately tries to explain how he's better for you than him.
"i don't have a history of cheating... unlike present company..." your ex digs, shooting a smug look at otoya, who grumbles out a "c'mon, it was one time..."
you just chuckle, shaking your head in exasperation with a heavy sigh. "no, you didn't cheat. but you're still a manipulative asshole." he huffs, rolling his eyes and mumbling curses under his breath.
"you pretentious bitch, i never once hurt you. it was all for your betterment because you can't take care of yourself." your ex spits, getting closer until otoya puts an arm between you two.
"don't talk to what's mine like that, back it up bud." otoya muses with a grin, pushing your ex back lightly, putting himself between you two. your ex stammers, glaring at you over your boyfriend's shoulder.
seemingly, all was fine until the next time you were out with otoya, your ex appeared again: delivering the same take-me-back speech. it was getting tiring and you felt your patience begin to wear thin with every emotionally-charged word that spilled from his lips.
you groaned, running your hands down your face with a tired sigh, otoya silently wrapping an arm around your shoulder.
"listen, i think you should just go, man. this is getting pretty pathetic... i know that y/n's a real catch, but sometime's you gotta know when you can't reel a babe in..." otoya says, somehow getting even more smug as he presses you into his side, leering down at your ex.
eventually, after a few more snide remarks from otoya, your ex finally gave up. allowing you to slump in your boyfriend's arms, letting ot a tired sigh as you kissed his cheek. "thanks, 'toya..."
"i know why he's so desperate, there really is no one like you. makes me happy that i ended my player streak for you..."
Tumblr media
an angel sent from heaven. arguably the best person to run into your ex with. yukimiya is calm and composed enough if your ex is temperamental, and he's tall and handsome to scare anyone else away. 10/10 literal perfect man.
yukimiya’s a pretty boy, he’s tall and lean with an angelic smile. he’s a catch, by far the best man you’ve ever dated. he only proves this to be even more true when the two of you run into your ex.
there wasn’t necessarily any bad blood between you two, he had just suddenly broken up with you on the claim that “he fell out of love.” it hurt you like hell, of course, but there was no reason for you to resent him for it. so you two left on good terms, occasionally wishing a happy birthday to the other until the friendship too fizzled out.
then you met yukimiya through a mutual friend and fell hard, but he fell harder. so here you are, happily sipping a blue slushy while yukimiya held your hand and chattered about soccer.
“blue was always our favorite…” a voice rang from behind you, yukimiya stopped drinking his red slushy as he turned with you. there he was, your ex with a sheepish grin.
you quirked a brow, confused. you hadn’t talked to him in nearly a year, ever since you and yuki had started dating.
he smiles sweetly at you, the kind that has you realizing where this is leading. “sorry, i’ve just been nostalgic about us lately…” he said with a chuckle, hand rubbing the back of his neck.
your eyes flit over to your boyfriend, catching the furrow of his brow. yukimiya was a really nice guy, he wasn’t a fan of confrontation. but you are.
so you grin at your ex, waving a hand dismissively. “sorry man, i’m in a very happy relationship…”
the second he tries to protest you swiftly shut him up, sticking out your tongue. at first, your ex was confused, then he realized that your tongue was purple. his eyes flit between your blue slushy and yukimiya’s red one, sighing and walking away.
yukimiya’s face goes bright red as he stares at you, “that’s not why your tongue is purple, you just wanted to try mine!” he protests.
you chuckle, grinning at him, “yeah, but he doesn’t have to know that…” yukimiya just sighs before grinning back at you.
"i don’t like lying, so why don’t you let me do it authentically…"

Could you please do AustinxReader with a bit of an age gap have a blowout fight stemming from reader’s insecurity and Austin is frustrated but ends in fluff?
Here you go!!
p.s my requests are still open!
-
Since your relationship with Austin became public a month ago, you'd recieved a very mixed review. Previous to it being public knowledge that you were dating him, you thought his fans would be happy for him but you weren't naive to the fact a lot of people would have things to say, negative things, your age gap being one of them.
Austin had been known to date women a few years younger than him, and when you met him at a mutual friends party, the idea of him being 5 years older than you did make you question the situation. You were 25, Austin was 30 and although you liked to think of yourself as independent, you had only ever dated guys your own age.
However being with Austin never made you feel as though there was an age difference, you were still old enough to be seen as a mature woman so what did it matter? Well according to a million instagram account, it mattered a lot.
why is Austin with another girl who was probably in diapers when he started filming for Elvis?!
this new "relationship" just screams gold digger
imma take a nap, wake me in a week when this shit show is over
The comments went on and on, making you feel physically sick that people could be so rude to someone they'd never met. You'd mentioned it to Austin before, after the first comment you saw you spoke to him about it and he simply explained that people would be jealous but if neither of you saw an issue with it then why does it matter?
You agreed, you loved Austin, but you'd never been in the public eye before and so when you start posting pictures on instagram and people are commenting horrific things, Austin suggests you turn your comments off, or only allow certain people to comment on your things.
But that doesn't stop people sharing photos of you walking around with Austin, or on your own, and ridiculing everything you do.
'Baby I'm home' Austin's voice calls through your small appartment, you didn't live together, but you'd given him a key to your place as it was closer to a lot of the meetings and sets he was currently going back and forth to.
'In the kitchen' you called out, placing your phone down on the side and turning to pull the meal you'd cooked out of the oven.
'mm something smells good' his voice was low as he set his phone and keys on the kitchen island, pressing a kiss to your cheek before moving to the fridge to get a drink.
'it's not much' you shrugged, you both moved around each other to get to what you needed.
'when was this taken?' Austin's looking at your phone which you'd left unlocked on a forum dedicated to posting hate about you.
'Oh not sure just came across it' you went to snatch the phone from the side but Austin had already picked it up and was scrolling.
'You really lookin' at all this shit? What have I told you? Why does it matter what everyone else thinks about OUR relationship?' his eyebrows are slightly raised as he looks at you for an answer.
'I just-'
'No Y/N, you're gunna make yourself sick looking at this crap all the time'
You both left the conversation there, neither one of you wanting to argue over it so you both sat and ate your food in front of the TV. When you were both done you'd set your plates on the coffee table and were on either ends of the couch. Austin was watching whatever was on the screen whilst you were texting your friend.
girl, have you seen this?! why can't people leave you both alone!'
You clicked on the link she'd sent you and it led to an article, the title was something about Austin dating a younger woman but the picture made a lump form in your throat. The picture was a terrible angle of you and Austin looked moody, the caption below it saying 'trouble in paradise'. You weren't sure why you were crying but the tears began to fall and you suddenly let out a sob, catching Austin's attention.
'Y/N? What's happened?' you shake your head and lock your phone, facing towards the TV in an attempt to move on
'Hey, talk to me' Austin was concerned, but when you informed him your upset was due to another article, he switched.
'How many god damn times are we gunna have this arguement? Are you so insecure in this relationship?' he was shouting now and you looked at him in annoyance.
'Yes Austin! Yes I am insecure, when everyone is telling me I'm too young to be dating you, too ugly, not good enough. Yes, it makes me feel like crap'
'What the hell do you want me to do about it?!' you're both yelling now, the moment getting heated.
'I don't know!' you scream at him, your body retracts into the couch as you sob and wipe your tears.
'Baby' Austin's voice is calmer now, he moves to sit beside you and pulls you into his chest.
'I'm sorry, this is just all so much so quick, I'm not used to it yet' your voice cracked and Austin's heart broke, he held you tight and kissed your head.
'I'm sorry baby, I should have been more understanding, why don't we leave our phones for tonight and just relax?'
'Not gunna make them go away'
Austin sighs at this, knowing you're right but having no idea how to handle the situation. Whilst you're taking a shower that evening he's posting a picture of you from the set of Elvis, it was before people knew about either of you, you were sitting in his chair in hair and makeup grinning up at him as he told a cheesy joke that got you smiling, it was also his lock screen. He captions the picture;
my one true love

Shen Qingqiu is a Genius/Billionaire/Housewife/Philanthropist
Shen Yuan is Binghe's kept wife but in actuality is a genius who has a stock portfolio more robust than Binghe's. He likes being Binghe's trophy husband though, lazing around the house and wearing the lingerie gifts Binghe brings him.
Everyone thinks that Shen Yuan is a gold digger who is only with Binghe for his money but only Binghe knows that Shen Yuan is actually the spare heir of the oldest conglomerate in the country.
Shen Yuan has no interest in the company and decided to use his earnings from his day trading to fund his lifestyle instead. He chooses to dress like a nerdy otaku and only crawl out of his cushy apartment for coffee and snacks which is how he met Binghe.
Binghe is the hottest CEO in the country right now, freshly minted and smelling of new money. He's an upstart who has taken the business world by storm. He is also surrounded by incompetent people who can't get his coffee order right.
So now he has to schlep himself down to the coffee shop near his building to get his own coffee by himself. But never has he been so glad that his personal secretary is an airheaded dolt who seems more interested in getting into his pants than actually doing her job because it's how he meets Shen Yuan, the love of his life.
One look at the bespectacled beauty standing across the shop, and the rest is history. Binghe is instantly smitten and spends an inordinate amount of time in the coffee shop trying to work up the courage to speak to him.
They date and fall in love. And in the course of their courtship, Binghe finds out that his husband to be is one of the sharpest business minds he has ever encountered. Occasionally, Shen Yuan will visit him in his office, ostensibly to spend more time with his workaholic bf.
Shen Yuan will bring his gaming console to fiddle around with while Binghe works and waits for him to finish so they can go to dinner together. When Binghe gets frustrated with a difficult business account, Shen Yuan only has to take a glance before delivering some brilliant insight that makes Binghe look at Shen Yuan like he is an angel sent from the heavens above. Binghe also learns about Shen Yuan's razor sharp tongue and his fondness for trashy literature, his love for character tees and sweatpants. He falls in love with all these aspects.
When they get married, Shen Yuan becomes content with staying in their shared apartment complex, spending his days on internet forums screaming at online trolls and waiting for Binghe to come home.
A secret possessive part of Binghe is happy that Shen Yuan is such a homebody.

25 Years of Dreaming for a Rescue from the Moon
Tumblr media
25 years ago today, MegaMan Legends (also known as MegaMan 64 for it’s Nintendo 64 release) released for the first time on the original PlayStation console! The game takes place far in the future, where water covers most of the Earth’s surface and what remains of civilization is contained to islands scattered far from each other. MegaMan Volnutt works as a digger, who delves into ruins beneath the surface for salvage and travels between islands with Barrel Caskett and his granddaughter Roll on their ship until it crashes on Kattelox Island at the beginning of the game. The start of a series that would include two games and a spin-off, the second game ended on a cliffhanger that saw MegaMan stranded on a space colony called Elysium, with Roll and other characters met throughout the games building a rocket ship intending to return for him.
However, the third game (being developed for the 3DS at the time) was cancelled, cited for lack of fan interest. Capcom quickly retracted this statement and reworded their official reason: Capcom had developed websites and forums to get fans involved in the development of the game, including input in character designs and more, and cited lack of involvement in these avenues as the reasoning for the game’s cancellation. Developers within Capcom have indicated interest in finishing MegaMan Legends 3 over the years, but nothing concrete has ever materialized. My hope is that with the release of the Battle Network Collection and revitalized interest in MegaMan games of that nature, there may be something in the future for MegaMan Legends as well, even if it’s just a port of Legends 1 and 2 and Tron Bonne’s Misadventures on the Switch/other consoles. As of right now (unless you’re willing to pay exorbitant sums on eBay), the only way to play these games is via emulation or on a PSP/Vita and buying them off the PlayStation store, and who knows how much longer those stores will remain open with how Sony has threatened to just pull the plug on them in the past.
Legends is a game series that I dearly love, not only for how much I loved to play it as a kid on the N64 (even if my brother and I could never get past the initial Bonne fight), but for how much joy it’s been to return to as an adult on PS. I would love for it to get new life on current gen consoles not only to have a way for me to secure it’s spot in my library, but also so new players can experience and enjoy these games as much as I have.

Leon’s celebrity status made dating hard. Even if the idea of being mobbed by cameras and paparazzi mid-intimate moment could, somehow, be made appealing, he knew that any potential partner he was seeing would be overanalysed by every newspaper, magazine, and online forum available. It was inevitable.
After all, part of Leon’s popularity came from his availability - the young, handsome bachelor who was known throughout the region for his charisma, kind heart, and effortless charm. Who wouldn’t want to date him?
And yet, any actual date would surely be met with some criticism or backlash. If they weren’t famous, then they must be a gold digger using Leon for his money and as a launchpad for their own fame. If they were well known, then god forbid they have any sort of upcoming event on the horizon, or else the whole ‘dating’ thing was an organised publicity stunt to gain a couple more column inches.
It’s not really difficult to see why Leon and Dani decided to keep their relationship a secret at first.
But, when they did go out on those early dates, Leon always favoured natural, secluded locations. He knows all the best spots in Galar to get some alone time and admire the breathtaking scenery, and it made open, maskless conversation a lot easier knowing that he wouldn’t be overheard by anyone. He was opening himself up to Dani only, letting her see sides of him that the rest of Galar weren’t even aware existed, and the comfort of finally being seen, known and understood captured his heart like nothing else.

I have the Ad-Free subscription and I have not adjusted it to show me the advertisements anyhow. I also have the "2007" tab. I take it that we are commemorating Tumblr's birthday?
.
In 2007, a formerly really great fan group called the "Southern Outpost", a regional subdivision of the 501st, was in the middle of suffering the fate that happens to so many social groups after the three year mark: infighting and clique hostility. I wish at the time that we had had the resource from the internet laying out the Geek Social Fallacies. Maybe we could have saved a good thing. Maybe we could have parted on cordial terms. Instead a large group of grown ass adults chose from bitterness to act in petty, teenagerish, and occasionally criminal ways. Some of the most backbiting snotty little twits were horrified after the fact when the person who paid for and maintained the group forums out of his own pocket made their plotting threads visible to the entire membership instead of hidden in an officer-only area. They weren't horrified at their own behavior, mind. They were horrified at consequences happening.
In 2007, another of my big hobbies and online social outlets was an MMO called City of Heroes. It is not hyperbole to say that I am alive today because of that game.
In 2007, my primary mobile device was a hand-me-down Palm Pilot. I still have a really cool folding keyboard that I acquired to write fanfiction on it.
In 2007, I was working my way through the original pre-radio show stories of The Shadow. They were public domain at that time. Since then a publishing conglomerate whose initials are CN has used lawyers and the threats of lawsuits to yank this material away from any place where I can currently access it. The Silent Seven is a great plot for upcycling into a modern street level adventure story ... once you strip out various unfortunate isms of the time in which it was written. I was also getting a lot of my reading in the pulp genre and scifi genre from Project Gutenberg and from a similar free public domain site called ManyBooks.
In 2007, Ursula Vernon told us the story of a wombat named Digger, and her allies Ganesh and the ShadowChild and Ed. Poor, sweet, compassionate, heart-rending Ed.

An AI Problem
youtube
Essentially, if I enter the Dock map directly, the enemies glide about as you'd expect. But if I enter from the Tutorial map, they don't move. This is clearly some oversight in their AI; perhaps they don't recognize entering the map from another map as a BeginPlay, or some such trickery. I did put a Grave Digger into the Tutorial map, and it moves around normally, so I really don't know the issue. If it's not solved by a trip to the Unreal Forums then I'll enlist outside help.
Tumblr media
I'm using that first test map as a guinea pig for this experiment; I went directly from it to the Dock map and the AI still didn't work, which does suggest that it's an issue with the AI itself, and not the Tutorial map. That makes things a little more manageable, but I'm still at a loss.

"A princess’ skull was taken by grave-digger and colonialist German General of the Schutztruppe Ralph Zurn. He was responsible for the revolts, massacres and extermination orders against Nama and Herero peoples; digging the human remains and belongings of Namibian people to sale-export them to ethnographic museums in London, Dahlem Berlin and Dresden which are partly now part of the private ‘pharmaceutical’ (funded by Bayer) collections at the Humboldt Forum. We see maps and evidence of how the crimes were committed through psychological night visions by his daughter Unica Zurn following his ghost whilst on duty. Her torment in writing and in dadaist-termed drawings are given as evidence in the tribunal to hold accountability of the crimes committed by Germany linking to her father R. Zurn, E. Fischer and Carl Peters."

Jacqueline Fernandez’ lawyer speaks up after Nora Fatehi records statement in defamation case: “My client reserves the right to sue for malicious prosecution”
On July 31, Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi gave a deposition in a defamation case she had brought against Jacqueline Fernandez in Delhi's Patiala High Court. The actress asserts that she is being used as a scapegoat in the money laundering case of Rs. 200 crore connected to con artist Sukesh Chandrashekhar. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has purportedly accused Fernandez in the matter and has questioned him.
Tumblr media
“They have called me a gold digger and accused me of having a relationship with a con artist (Sukesh Chandrasekhar) and included my name in an ongoing criminal case to divert attention away from them," Nora said, as reported by News18.
Following Fatehi's statement recording, Jacqueline Fernandez' lawyer released a statement which read, “We have not received any official communication from Honourable Courts so we cannot confirm any such developments. It is a matter of admitted fact that Jacqueline has never ever made any statement against anyone for that matter before any electronic , print or social media. Jacqueline has always maintained a dignified and graceful silence about the case as the matter is sub-judice and pending before Honourable Courts for adjudication. However, that does not mean that she can be dragged into certain unwarranted legal proceedings for no fault of hers. Whenever legal Arguments are advanced or written notes filed before Judicial Forums for the purpose of adjudication. Such arguments cannot be discussed like this before the public domain. That itself is an act of civil and criminal Contempt of the respective legal proceedings. The Judicial proceedings have certain sanctity which has to be respected. However, if Jacqueline is compelled into an unwarranted litigation or dragged into a fake litigation against her Will, She shall approach the Honourable Delhi High Court for her rightful legal remedy for protecting and safeguarding her Fundamental Right as Guaranteed by the Constitution of India. Separate Legal Action for contempt of Courts can be considered if the records of Court are leaked and used to initiate legal proceedings wherein certain people are not even party to that proceedings. My client reserves the right to sue for malicious prosecution in criminal courts against the people responsible for such illegal and malicious Act which kindly note."
Jacqueline Fernandez was the subject of a defamation lawsuit brought by Nora Fatehi for making "defamatory imputations against her due to malicious reasons." In addition, the reality show judge and actress sued at least 15 media outlets for making defamatory remarks about her.

Northeast floods devastate ‘heartbroken’ farmers (AP) Well before it was warm enough to plant seedlings in the ground, farmer Micah Barritt began nursing crops like watermelon, eggplant and tomatoes—eventually transplanting them from his greenhouse into rich Vermont soil, hoping for a bountiful fall harvest. Within a few hours last week, those hopes were washed away when flood waters inundated the small farm, destroying a harvest with a value he estimated at $250,000. “The loss of the crops is a very tangible way to measure the flood, but the loss of the work is hard to measure,” said Barritt, one of five co-owners of Diggers’ Mirth Collective Farm in Burlington, Vermont. “We’re all grieving and heartbroken because of this.” That heartbreak was felt by farmers in several Northeast states after floods dealt a devastating blow at the worst possible time, when many plants were too early to harvest, but are now too late to replant in the region’s abbreviated growing season. Officials have called last week’s flooding Vermont’s worst natural disaster since floods in 1927.
The Most Essential Worker in a Heat Wave? The A.C. Guy (NYT) José Guerrero’s phone buzzes from morning to midnight with sweaty pleas for help: The air-conditioner fan just quit. My grandma is stuck in a 90-degree house. My children are overheating. Please come, it’s so hot. As Phoenix slogs through a record 21 straight days of 110-degree or higher temperatures, Mr. Guerrero, 33, has emerged as maybe the most essential worker in a town desperate to stay cool: the A.C. repair guy. Air-conditioner service companies around the Southwest are seeing voracious demand—a result of record-breaking temperatures searing the country from Florida to California, compounded by a shortage of skilled technicians and equipment. So now, Mr. Guerrero, his two brothers and their father roll out seven days a week, heading for suffocating attics and tar-shingled rooftops to coax ailing air-conditioners back to life. They fix leaking refrigerant lines, replace burned-out capacitors and try to lower Phoenix’s temperature a few degrees. But keeping the city cool is sweltering work. They endure the heat by guzzling water and wrapping wet cloths around their necks, and try to avoid burning their hands on scalding sheet metal or fainting inside crawl spaces where they say temperatures can soar to 150 degrees.
As a child, she sold street tamales; a senator now, she’s shaking up Mexico’s presidential race. (AP) A street-food salesgirl who became a tech entrepreneur and senator is shaking up the contest to succeed Mexico’s popular president and offering many voters the first real alternative to her country’s dominant party. Xóchitl Gálvez, 60, helped her family as a girl by selling tamales on the street. Today the straight-talking opposition senator is a long shot against Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party, which holds Congress and 22 of Mexico’s 32 states. Despite her slim chances, Gálvez seems to have shaken the president so badly that he’s been insulting her almost daily during his morning briefings. A political independent who initially set her sights on competing to be Mexico City mayor and often travels the sprawling capital on a bicycle, Gálvez entered the Senate chamber in December dressed as a dinosaur, an allusion to party leaders known for their archaic, unmovable practices. Mexican society is looking for someone new to believe in, Gálvez told The Associated Press.
Homicides in Brazil at the lowest level in over a decade, report says (AP) Brazilian researchers say the number of violent deaths last year reached the lowest level in more than a decade, puzzling some experts because there has been an explosion of firearms circulating in the country in recent years. About 47,500 people were slain in Latin America’s largest nation in 2022, said a report Thursday by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, an independent group that tracks crimes. While the number of killings in 2022 was down 2.4% from the previous year, it remained roughly even with levels recorded since 2019. The last time Brazil had less violent deaths was in 2011, with 47,215 killings.
Europe embraces the siesta to deal with the heat wave (NYT) A decade ago, in the wake of a financial crisis, Spain’s sacred siesta seemed to be under serious threat. Criticism was mounting across Europe that Spain’s sluggish economy resulted, in part, from its long midday break. Worried about being stereotyped as a sleepy, lazy country, Spain pledged to abolish the siesta to increase productivity. The siesta lived on, though rumors of its demise circulated. And now, as Europe has been gripped by more frequent and longer heat waves, other countries have come to see the wisdom of the siesta, including Germany, where a strong work ethic is valued sometimes to the point of mockery. German newspapers were among those sneering at the siesta during the economic crisis. But this summer, some German officials and work experts are extolling the virtues of a midday break. “Siesta during the heat is certainly not a bad suggestion,” said Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, reacting to calls this week from top German public health officials to imitate Spain, where many cities still see shops close and streets empty between 2 and 4 p.m. The heat—temperatures in Germany were around 90 degrees Fahrenheit this week—is forcing people to rethink their way of life and look to southern countries as examples of how to adapt to rising temperatures. Several research papers have found that napping improves productivity. The benefit of siesta has also been recognized for people’s health. Researchers at the University College of London showed in a study published last month that regular napping may help protect the brain’s health as it ages.
Wildfires in Greece burn for fifth day as another heatwave hits (Reuters) Greece struggled to contain a wildfire west of Athens that burnt forestland for a fifth day on Friday as another heatwave hit the country. Firefighters, backed by air water bombers and reinforcements from Cyprus, France, Israel and Italy, attempted to control the fire that broke out in the wider Athens area on Monday, gutting houses and forcing evacuations. More than 100 houses and businesses have been severely damaged from this wildfire and another near Athens that authorities put out earlier in the week.
Ukraine begins firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions at Russian forces (Washington Post) Ukraine has begun firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions against Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine in a push to break up well-fortified Russian positions that have slowed Ukraine’s summer offensive, according to Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter. The use of the controversial U.S.-made weapons, which has not been previously reported, follows President Biden’s “difficult decision” to order the delivery of the widely banned munitions last week, a move that human rights groups, European allies and some Democrats criticized due to the risk of civilian casualties. Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring to cluster munitions on Sunday, threatened to retaliate against Ukraine “if they are used against us,” although Russia has already used cluster munitions in populated areas of Ukraine at least 24 times since the start of Moscow’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, according to the United Nations. Cluster bombs, outlawed in more than 120 countries, explode in the air over a target, releasing dozens to hundreds of smaller bomblets across an area potentially as big as several football fields. Children are particularly vulnerable, as the submunitions can fail to explode until they’re picked up, potentially years after a conflict has ended.
Rich lode of EV metals could boost Taliban and its new Chinese partners (Washington Post) Sayed Wali Sajid spent years fighting American soldiers in the barren hills and fertile fields of the Pech River Valley, one of the deadliest theaters of the 20-year insurgency. But nothing confounded the Taliban commander, he said, like the new wave of foreigners who began showing up, one after another, in late 2021. “The Chinese were unbelievable,” Sajid said, chuckling at the memory. “At first, they didn’t tell us what they wanted. But then I saw the excitement in their eyes and their eagerness, and that’s when I understood the word ‘lithium.’” A decade earlier, the U.S. Defense Department, guided by the surveys of American government geologists, concluded that the vast wealth of lithium and other minerals buried in Afghanistan might be worth $1 trillion, more than enough to prop up the country’s fragile government. In a 2010 memo, the Pentagon’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations dubbed the country the “Saudi Arabia of lithium.” A year later, the U.S. Geological Survey published a map showing the location of major deposits and highlighted the magnitude of the underground wealth, saying Afghanistan “could be considered as the world’s recognized future principal source of lithium.” Now, in a great twist of modern Afghan history, it is the Taliban—which overthrew the U.S.-backed government two years ago—that is finally looking to exploit those vast lithium reserves. And with the United States absent from Afghanistan, it is Chinese companies that are now aggressively positioning themselves to reap a windfall from lithium here.
Cambodian leader’s son, a West Point grad, set to take reins of power—but will he bring change? (AP) Hun Sen has been Cambodia’s autocratic prime minister for nearly four decades, during which the opposition has been stifled and the country has grown increasingly close to China. With his Cambodian People’s Party virtually guaranteed another landslide victory in this Sunday’s election, it’s hard to imagine dramatic change on the horizon. But the 70-year-old former communist Khmer Rouge fighter and Asia’s longest-serving leader says he is ready to hand the premiership to his oldest son, Hun Manet, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who heads the country’s army. Hun Manet’s education includes bachelor’s at West Point being followed by a master’s at New York University and a doctorate in economics from Britain’s Bristol University. His background has given rise to hope from some in the West that he might bring political change, but it will still take work to regain influence in the Southeast Asian country of 16.5 million, given China’s strategic and economic importance.
Travis King disappeared into a North Korea more isolated than ever (Reuters) When U.S. soldier Travis King sprinted across the border into North Korea from the South this week, he disappeared into a North Korea where lingering COVID-19 concerns and restrictions have made the already secretive country more isolated than ever. During the pandemic North Korea stopped all international travel and most trade, built a lengthy border wall, and even shot some would-be unauthorised border crossers early in the outbreak. Its trade has slowly resumed and mask mandates appear to have been dropped, but analysts say Pyongyang is still keenly nervous about border crossings, authorised or not. King ran over the border on Tuesday and U.S. officials say they have yet to ascertain his fate. “North Koreans don’t want to interact with the outside world,” said Andrei Lankov, director of the Seoul-based Korea Risk Group, noting the only known case of foreigners being allowed into the country in the last three years was a new Chinese ambassador and other diplomats in March, after lengthy negotiations.
Heat Affects Older People More. Here’s How to Stay Safe. (NYT) Extreme heat can be deadly for anyone, but older adults are uniquely vulnerable. In the heat wave that suffocated Europe in the summer of 2022, people age 65 and older accounted for approximately 90 percent of heat-related deaths. Experts say that three factors combine to increase older adults’ risk: biological changes that occur naturally with age, higher rates of age-related chronic diseases and greater use of medications that can alter the body’s response to heat. As people age, they also stop feeling as thirsty and so they tend to drink less. In hot conditions, that can cause them to become dehydrated faster. People often think that heat needs to be extreme (say, over 100 degrees) to cause illness, but in older adults, signs of heat exhaustion can emerge when temperatures are as low as 80 degrees. Physical exertion increases a person’s risk for heat illness because the body starts to generate even more heat. On hot days, older adults and people with serious health conditions should limit outdoor activities like walking and gardening to the cooler mornings and evenings, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Listen to your body, too: If the activity starts to feel harder than normal, that’s a signal to stop and find a place to cool down. Signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, a racing heart or feeling lethargic.

What's this about them no longer showing accidents? When did this become a thing?
Basically, Jon Sen said something in an interview (it was on the Metro site if you want to look it up) a few months back, and this style has been a thing for roughly the same amount of time (probably even since before the interview, I think, but I'd have to check), about how they were going to cut down on accident scenes. He said it was about modernising the show and taking a bold new direction or something like that, but I wouldn't be surprised if budget cuts were involved too.
I won't say I love it and think it's a wonderful choice, because I don't. But IMHO all the stuff going around (particularly on certain forums...) about it being show-destroying, or how we'll supposedly never have scenes outside the hospital again*, or saying we'll never see the paramedics again, etc. is hyperbole. The show obviously hasn't abolished all scenes outside the hospital, we're still seeing the paramedics feature (not massively at the moment, but that's more because none of them have big storylines going on right now, since Sah's storyline with their dad seems to have been forgotten about lol), we still see them go out to see patients. We're just seeing fewer stunts on-screen. They haven't even abolished accident scenes entirely - we saw the care home fire, and there was that episode a few weeks back (I think it was Ethan's exit ep?) where we saw the one guy swerve out of the way of a digger and end up crashing his car, we saw that guy Jacob helped falling off the cliff.
On-screen, it's been a thing for a few months - we're seeing more episodes start with the paramedics turning up after the accident has happened, rather than seeing it play out on screen.
(* - Funnily enough, I stumbled across Digital Spy's "oral history" article for Casualty from 2021 recently - I'd seen the Holby one, but I didn't realise there was a Casualty one too - and according to that, the early idea for the show was something like this, with all the drama solely taking place inside the hospital. I just thought that was interesting.)
