“Tota Roy Chowdhury’s character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is borrowed from Karan Johar’s childhood,” reveals latter

In an interview, Karan Johar discusses the slurs he received in college for having an effeminate body language.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has spoken up about being called names in college for having a lewd body language. The latest film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked Johar's return to directing, and he claimed that the event has remained in his heart ever since.

Johar claimed that he was "very effeminate" as a child and used to dance in his room to Hindi songs in an interview with Film Companion. He claimed that his father, Yash Johar, frequently observed him dancing and clapping and felt it was "great".

When he entered college, things did, however, alter. He insisted, "No one told there was anything wrong at that time. So I grew up thinking (that) this is fine. Much later when you go to college you realise when you carry that through and do those moves, and people look at you and laugh."

Then Karan Johar said, "You're called all kinds of things. There are terms used and it's still in my heart because I grew up with that feeling that I was laughed at for my body language or way of being. Somewhere Tota's character is borrowed from my childhood. When he says ‘Hunar ka koi gender nahi hota (talent has no gender)’, I believe that."

Even though Karan didn't think it was a traumatic event, he did question why other people couldn't accept him for who he was while his own father did.

For the uninitiated, Tota Roy Chowdhury portrays Rani's father, a Kathak dancer who suffers humiliation since his profession is connected to femininity. Rocky's son Ranveer soon joins him and picks up Kathak, responding appropriately to those who made him feel bad. On "Dola Re Dola," Tota and Ranveer give a solid performance.

The dance master is talking about the difference between pre-independence era cinema and later Bollywood.

When you are old enough to remember the criticism faced by current favourites at the time they were introduced, it feels really weird. Many of these critisisms are actually valid if you examine them with an impartial mind but nostalgia can be really blinding. I am not talking about actual 'before its time' progressive content. Actors and performances which were considered mid at best are lauded as groundbreaking, films and books no one liked are hailed as 'underrated' masterpieces . . . the list goes on. Maybe there is no impartial mind and we are influenced by our own nostalgia and biases 🤣

For example when the then new Don was released in 2006, many people criticised the bad acting in some parts, especially SRK's performance as the street performer Vijay.

Kareena Kapoor was fat-shamed and she went on her own fat shaming spree against other actresses like Vidya Balan after she lost weight.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are one of the few onscreen couples who have never given a flop together.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is known to be one of the most iconic couples on the big screen and have managed to win hearts every time they come together. From Baazigar to Dilwale, as they continue to entertain audiences with their intense chemistry, the couple made their fans relive their movies as they reunited for a recent event. The star-studded premiere of The Archies, which marks the film debut of SRK’s daughter Suhana Khan was held at the NMACC in Mumbai wherein we saw the duo have a gala time.
