The Ship of DieRuca
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DieRuca is a ship between Diego Caplan, a Hufflepuff who is passionate about dancing and duelling, and Veruca McQuaid, a Slytherin who takes pride in both her duelling and flying skills.
In this post, you'll get to know how Veruca and Diego are within the AUs I ship them in. To find more DieRuca content, you can look through the #dieruca tag.
It took quite a while to write out since there was a lot I wanted to add in here. But I thought it was best to keep the main AUs I like to hyper-fixate on and imagine about. Also, I used DeepL for the translations for the quote. If I’m wrong, please let me know and I'll fix it.
"You are the music of my heart"
A phrase often shared between the two in place of 'I love you.' Usually said in their native languages.
CANON
The two meet during their first year but aren’t officially acquainted until they both join the dueling club. Veruca mostly ignored Diego’s attempts in making conversation due to his constant flirting both during duels and outside of the club. After many duels ending in draws, Diego became part of Veruca’s circle and joined their adventures.
Throughout their last three years of Hogwarts, the two have gotten close to one another since the dancing competition hosted by Madam Rosmerta.
In 1993, Diego and Veruca officially started dating. The lead up to their relationship was slow with Diego taking the initiative in breaking Veruca out of her shell. Most of their dates involve picnics under the stars or walks in the parks. In 1995 they had their first child, Marisol, out of wedlock and got married some time after. In 1997, they had their second child, Carina.
Both Diego and Veruca take part in the Battle at Hogwarts alongside their friends and former professors while their children are at the McQuaid family home with their grandparents.

GENDERBENT
Veren McQuaid, the strong and silent, intimidating boy has a soft spot for the flirty, and flamboyant girl, Doria Caplan.
Unlike his female counterpart, Veren appears to be much more intimidating. He's a boy of a few words as he struggles to express himself vocally, he believes his actions will speak for him. He is self conscious of his stoic visage since it often frightens others and causes unwarranted misconceptions of his integrity. His moments of poignant silence and his tall stature scares many away from him, causing him to suffer from loneliness. The closest he has to a friend is Carly (female Carson) since they grew up together. While he doesn't mind Carly's company, Veren gets grumpy when the girl tries to make him bond with others or try to speak for him. When he can't verbally express himself on most occasions, he usually shows simple hand gestures. When he does have the courage to speak, it's usually in the form of short one liners.
Doria would be described as flamboyant, farsighted, a bit egotistical and dramatic. In smaller doses though, those traits are often spoiled by habits of being crude and impatient. A little worse than her male counterpart. She entertains people with 'high-class' etiquette and shameless flattery. While she openly expresses romantic interest, she appears to be oblivious of her own romantic feelings towards Veren. She was completely unphased by his intimidating aura. She constantly showered him with compliments and sometimes even considered him to be her 'bodyguard' due to how easily he can scare people away.
FLIPPED!
Flipped!DieRuca is a ship you might want to be worried about for Diego because Veruca is very clingy when it comes to her friends and lover.
While original Diego is a flirt, an excellent dueller and great at dancing, Flipped!Diego is quite the opposite. Flipped!Diego typically lacks self confidence. He's not as charming or flirty as the original, he is shy and sensitive and not much of a strong dueller. Flipped!Diego is always caught off guard whenever Flipped!Veruca shows up randomly. His affection for her might be questionable as he does care for her but sometimes finds her to be a bit exhausting to handle. Despite that, he appreciates how she treats him, with so much love and affection even if he's shy to openly be affectionate with her.
Flipped!Veruca is openly friendly, overly energetic, and bubbly until someone disturbs her happiness and triggers the creepier side to her happy personality. She can be extremely clingy, giving lots of hugs and holding hands. While Veruca is perfectly fine with her small circle of friends, Flipped!Veruca appears to be obsessed with making plenty of friends. A bit of an unhealthy obsession as she will force herself to be their friend by clinging onto them till they submit. She once locked herself in her room for a few days to make friendship sweaters for her and Carson. When she became close with Diego, she did the exact same thing but instead of five sweaters she made fifteen matching sweaters for the both of them.
CARDVERSE
Veruca as the Acting Queen of Spades is no damsel in distress, and is in fact a strong and independent woman. She puts her duties as a queen before anything else and has no time fooling around with trivial matters. As a dominant ruler, romance is the last thing that comes to mind for her, if not ever. Her country and her people come before her and anyone else.
Diego as the King of Hearts retains most of his original counterpart's personality. Loyal, charming, passionate and understanding. He finds Veruca's high walls as a challenge to break down, and he often interacts with her more than the rest of the officials within the other regions. He likes to tease the Queen of Spades whenever he gets the chance, and enjoys the progress of seeing her open up more to him.
Veruca at first found his antics as a nuisance more so than anything. He was always distracting her from her duties and seemed to never take his position as the King of Hearts seriously. She started warming up to him after he showed concern when she was overworking herself. Her feelings for him started showing but since they were from different regions, she tried to deny any thought of being together. She does eventually enjoy his company more openly, and a misunderstanding involving a hand crafted gift starts a few rumors within the Kingdom of Hearts. Their relationship, though starting off as a secret, is easily noticeable by the public.
MAFIA
In this AU, Diego and Veruca’s personalities are kind of changed. While Diego still retains his charming personality, it is mostly reserved for Veruca, his children and younger siblings. Around others, Diego is more serious, looking at everyone with a cold gaze as if he was staring right through them. When it's necessary, he can resort to ruthless violent acts. With Veruca, she keeps her witty remarks and plays off Diego's advances in the beginning of their relationship. When they get together, Veruca shows her more sentimental side. She's also aware of what Diego's family business truly is and turns a blind eye towards it, after all her family didn’t gain their wealth and fortune through legal ways either.
Veruca and Diego first met at a banquet at the Caplan residence when they were younger. Diego and Veruca’s fathers were friends so they were always invited to parties and other gatherings. Though they met when they were young, they didn't see each other again until adulthood. While Diego is slowly taking on the ropes of the family business, Veruca is a ballet instructor/administrator for a performing arts school. The two meet when Diego was late to pick up his younger sister, Mireya, after a lesson. Diego is aware that Veruca has no involvement in her family’s business and tries to keep her out of it when he’s with her. Unfortunately Veruca gets attacked by a rival gang and she’s in Diego’s care and protection.
The two reminisce about their past and enjoy they’re times together, however Veruca is often left confused and frustrated with Diego constantly switching between being sweet to distant with her. Their relationship deals with a lot of hurdles testing their trust and loyalties, but in the end they both overcome the obstacles.

QUOTES
Veruca: "Would you stop me, if I ever tried to leave again?"
Diego: "I would. But if you truly want to leave this place behind, then I'll follow you wherever you go."
Diego: "I think peridots have become my favorite gem."
Veruca: "Oh? What makes you say that?"
Diego: "Your eyes, love. They remind me of your eyes."
Veruca: "Goodness, you can be so corny sometimes."
Veruca: "I'm sorry, how many kids did you say you want?"
Diego: "Aha, as many as we possibly can!"
Veruca: "Yeah, we're not competing with the Weasleys. I'll settle for three, but no more than that!"
Diego: "Three is fine by me!"
Veruca: "This is the fourteenth scarf you've gotten. Are you starting a collection?"
Diego: "Oh absolutely! I'm collecting scarves made with great material and style. Here, feel this one sweetheart. The fabric used for this is quite soft and the color would look great with your skintone."
Diego: "You're as gorgeous as ever, Ruca."
Veruca: "Oh stop it—, you spoil me too much. I don’t need all these jewelry."
Diego: "You should get used to it. I plan to spoil you for as long as I live. Nothing but the best for you."
Diego: "Mi cielo, I know you wanted to teach them young… but did you really have to blow up the wall?"
Veruca: "Our daughters are naturals! But, I guess I can start training them outside by using those old trees as training targets."
Diego: “Eres la música de mi corazón”
Veruca: “Is ceol mo chroí thú”

synopsis: as with everything else, valentine’s day is not the same this year. for once, rebekah finds herself unsure about everything and ben certainly doesn’t make things any clearer.
pairing: rebekah roberts x ben copper
genre: little fluff, mostly angst. beware.
word count: 4.294
note: oddly enough, i wrote this randomly in november. i put it in the discord so if anyone recognizes or remembers it, that’s why. i wanted to write a follow up for vday this year but couldn’t manage because of school. hope that’s alright <3 takes place in sixth year. also, yes rowan is alive in my canon shhh. happy vday everyone!!
Rebekah doesn’t think she’s ever seen quite so much pink in the Hogwarts halls.
Of course the castle has celebrated Valentine’s Day before, but not to this extent. On nearly every space between the windows sits a pink lantern enchanted to sparkle and over the windows are some pretty red ribbons. Every now and again the ceiling has been charmed to drop rose petals—which all still litter the floor. Rebekah thinks she’s even seen some doves flying around somewhere. Either way, she decides, the Head Boy and Head Girl this year have definitely outdone themselves. Though, what can you really expect when they’re both dating in time for the holiday.
From his place to her left, Ben groans at the ostentatious display. He’d never really been one to embrace the holiday before, but with the way things have changed the sneer on his face now would suggest that he is utterly repulsed by the view in front of him.
“This is all so ridiculous,” He grumbles and Rebekah has to crane her head up slightly to look him in the eye—a habit she still has to get used to. Where did short Ben go? “This is too much. I can hardly walk in here.”
Rebekah shrugs, adjusting the strap of her bag as they turn a corner to an identical corridor. Ben huffs. “I think you can manage to walk.” She teases and he shoots her an exasperated look.
“Fine, maybe I can but it’s not like they’re making it any easier.”
“I thought you liked Valentine’s Day…” Rebekah trails off, her statement phrased as more of a question, afraid to step on his nerves.
Ben’s shoulders seem to tense up slightly, but it’s gone as quickly as it came. He shrugs nonchalantly. “Maybe I used to, but I’ve come to realize how useless it is now. All it does is serve as a temporary distraction from things that really matter. Pretending for a day that everything is perfect without working towards that ideal at all.”
It’s a refreshing change from the classic exploitation excuse, though no less shocking coming from his lips. Though there is truth to what he says, Rebekah has to admit that his words hurt. Especially when she thinks back to all the Valentine’s Days they spent together.
The first three in the artifact room, having a private celebration of their own with smiles and secrets and cute little finger foods. It wasn’t really anything special, but it was to her. In fourth year they switched things up and he took her to Borgin and Burke’s. Together they shared little giggles and literature advice between the dusty crevices of books and silence. And last year…last year he took her to the tree out by the Black Lake. He’d set up a small picnic for them there, underneath the tree’s shade. They ended up talking and laughing and staying there much longer than they had intended. None of these excursions had necessarily been portrayed as a date—as they had only ever used that word for the Celestial Ball—but it was tradition now that they spent it together. Secretly, privately, and all their own.
To think now that he thought of it all as…a useless distraction? Well, it’s rather hurtful to say the least.
“I see,” Rebekah nods, her voice quiet. She doesn’t see the sideways look Ben sends her. “So…no plans this year then?”
They stop right before the library, one of the only places in the castle without decor. Ben looks at her, his brows pinched together in harsh contemplation. His brown eyes still hold an echo of the warmth he’s tried so hard to throw away and all Rebekah can hope for is that, if nothing else, he holds onto what’s left.
“No,” Ben replies evenly, leaving no room for doubt in his tone. “No plans this year.”
Without waiting for her to respond, he pulls open the library door and waits for her to enter first in a conflicting display of chivalry. Rebekah walks through silently and tries to not think of her hopes…and just how futile they were.
Tumblr media
Now, Rebekah thinks that she’s gotten better at controlling how expressive her face can be at times, but it appears there’s more work yet to be done. As evidenced, of course, by none other than Diego Caplan.
He walks into Transfiguration like he owns the place—just as he always does—with his chin held high in the air and his hair somehow flowing with the rhythm of his walk. He smiles at a group of Ravenclaws loitering in the corner before making his way over to his assigned seat next to her. Rebekah scoffs at the display but it comes out as more of a laugh and she lets it. Behind her, she can hear them all giggle.
He drops into the seat merrily, offering her a smile of her own. Though she doesn’t notice, this one is wider. “Hey, ‘Bekah! Good morning!”
Rebekah frowns at him. “It’s two o’clock.”
Diego’s grin doesn't falter. “Yeah, but ‘Good morning’ has a better ring to it.”
“Does it?” Rebekah wonders, replaying both greetings in her head. Eventually she comes to the decision that— “Yeah, I guess it does. Though, that’s hard to tell if it’s because the two words genuinely sound better together or because you likely hear ‘Good morning’ much more often than you hear ‘Good afternoon.’”
When she looks over, Diego is still smiling at her, one eyebrow raised in amusement. “What?”
The Hufflepuff shakes his head. “Oh, nothing. Just wondering how your brain works.”
The girl chuckles, going back to staring at her open textbook. “Why bother? Some things are meant to be cool and mysterious.”
“What’s wrong?”
Rebekah blinks. “What? Nothing’s wr—”
“Yes, it is,” Diego deadpans, pointing to her open textbook. “You’ve been on the same page since I walked in here. You love Transfig.”
“Ah, is that all?”
Diego laughs with another shake of his head. “No. You’ve also been pouting. I can tell.”
Rebekah sighs and pouts again, though she doesn’t deny it. “How did you get so attentive?”
“Just one of the perks of being me, I guess,” Diego dismisses, leaning slightly closer to not be overheard. “But seriously, ‘Bekah. Are you sure nothing’s wrong?”
She releases a long breath, allowing the brunt of her disappointment to show in spite of her next words. It’s like lifting a weight off her shoulders, trading a smiling mask for her real face. “It’s nothing, it’s stupid.”
“‘Bekah, if it’s making you so upset, then it can’t be stupid.”
“Really?”
Diego shrugs in an attempt to lighten the mood. “Well, even if it is stupid you’re still valid.”
She barks out a laugh. “Thanks.”
“So?”
The teen sighs. “It’s just…about tomorrow…” Diego perks up at this, sitting straighter in his chair. Rebekah feels slightly comforted to know he’s giving her his full attention. “I don’t know. Things are different now, but I thought at least some things wouldn’t change. But now I have nothing to do except eat the peppermint ice cream and chocolate that Rowan got because my plans fell through and—”
“—Hold on,” Diego interrupts and Rebekah clamps her mouth shut, realizing she’d been rambling and her cheeks heat up with embarrassment. She resists the urge to turn away. “Your plans fell through? Don’t you always do something with Ben?”
“I—” She clears her throat. “Yes. Usually. But…things are different and…he has other priorities now.”
“Other priorities!?” Diego scoffs and Rebekah is seized with panic at his rising volume. She shushes him manically, hoping it hadn’t drawn too much attention their way. Merlin, where is McGonagall? “Sorry, sorry. I’m just…” He shakes his head as though the very thought were absurd. “I fail to see how you could not be made a priority.”
Rebekah splutters and blushes. “D-Diego, I hardly think that I should always be put above other things. Ben is very busy trying to help Merula, Rowan, and I break into the final vault. And so am I, for that matter, so maybe it’s a good thing we didn’t make plans this year. It’s hardly a conducive use of our time.”
Diego rolls his eyes and places a hand over hers. The Ravenclaw is starkly aware of the contact but doesn’t know how to feel about it. “Rebekah,” He says and she looks to him timidly for the heartbreaker rarely does not employ her nickname. His voice is low as it wraps around the syllables and Rebekah can’t help but think of a completely separate baritone. “It is precisely because you are working so hard that you deserve a break on Valentine’s Day. You’re gonna burn yourself out otherwise and I hate to see that happen.”
“Well, what am I supposed to do, Diego?” She laments. “Everyone else is busy. Penny, Barnaby, Tulip, Tonks, Jae, Liz, Chiara, Andre, Badeea, Charlie, Merula,” She huffs as she counts each off on her fingers and runs out. “Merlin, even Talbott and Rowan are busy. I can’t just invite myself onto their plans.”
“Then go with me.”
Rebekah balks. Her face colors further. “What?”
“Go with me.” He repeats easily.
“Y-You mean to tell me you don’t have plans?” Rebekah asks in disbelief.
“Oh, I had plans,” Diego smirks briefly, his confident attitude shining through. “But none that I wouldn’t mind missing. Especially if I get to spend the day with you.”
Rebekah bites her bottom lip. Diego’s eyes follow the action but she doesn’t really notice in her concern. “I-I didn’t mean for you to cancel your plans. You really don’t have to. I can just…nap?”
Diego levels her with an unimpressed slant of his mouth. “Nap? Really?”
Rebekah sighs reluctantly but still does not admit defeat. She had not meant to impose herself. In fact, she didn’t even mean to dump all of her problems onto her friend and now he feels obligated to take care of her. And that’s the last thing that she wants.
She is also promptly aware of his hand still folded over hers on top of their desks.
“Hey, really, I want to,” Diego assures her and his eyes are filled with so much sincerity, even Rebekah must admit that it’s difficult to doubt. “I care about you, ‘Bekah, and I want you to have a nice time. If anyone deserves it, it’s you. So, what do ya say?”
Maybe it’s the fact that McGonagall chooses that moment to walk into the room to start class, her voice booming over the idle chatter. Perhaps, it’s because she misses Ben, or, who he used to be and what they almost had. Maybe it’s because Diego has surprised her on more than one occasion with how caring and sensitive and kind he can be and maybe she needs that right now. It’s likely a culmination of all of these that has her whispering—
“Sure,” She concedes and Diego breaks out into a dazzling grin that even has her smiling back. “What time?”
Tumblr media
“Oh my word!” Rowan gasps as Rebekah rushes around to get ready. She’s flying across each end of their dorm, making sure she has everything together. It’s been a while since she went on a not-date and while she and Diego are just friends, that doesn’t mean she can’t look nice. “You’re going out with Diego!?”
Rebekah huffs as she stops in front of the mirror.
The reflection looking back at her is still a new one. Rebekah thinks that she is beginning to see a whisper of frown lines around her mouth. She knows they’re not there but it’s like she can see them in advance. Her eyes are the same shade of sage green but somehow they look darker. Hollow. She’s never worn so much makeup before—because she’s never had a reason to—but the amount of concealer she had to apply to hide the dark circles beneath her eyes is a secret she doesn’t care to admit. And she still hasn’t gotten used to her bangs even after almost eight months or the length she’d grown it out too. She still gets surprised sometimes when she goes to run a hand through her hair and her hand goes all the way to her chest.
She smooths out the non-existent wrinkles in her red skirt and adjusts the collar of her cream turtleneck. Her nerves bring her hands back to her dark hair, fluffing it needlessly.
“Hello?” Rowan asks again, already prepared for her own date and now wasting time by sitting on her bed, waiting expectantly for her roommate to answer.
“No, I’m not going out with Diego, I’m just…going out with him. Tonight,” She clarifies, grabbing her bronze Ravenclaw jacket and throwing it on. “Is there a problem with that?”
Rowan shakes her head knowingly. “No,” she says but after being Rebekah’s best friend for nearly six years, the shorter girl knows she isn’t finished. “But what about Ben?”
Rebekah stiffens. “What about Ben?”
The other girl scoffs. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. You always do something with Ben for Valentine’s Day. Even when I specifically told you it was a bad idea.” She turns her nose up in the air haughtily.
“Yes, well…Ben made other plans this year.”
“Other plans!?” Rowan gapes as though scandalized. “Who could he possibly be making other plans with?”
Rebekah cringes at her poor phrasing. “No—No one, Ro. I just mean that…he didn’t want to do anything with me this year. Or anyone, really. And that’s fine.”
“It is?” Rowan asks dryly.
Rebekah nods. “Yes. It is. Because Diego does want to do something with me,” She runs to her trunk to wrestle out her shoes and then sinks onto her bed to slip them on. “He’s…he’s offered me some…reprieve, Rowan.”
“From Ben?”
“Ye—No! No. Not from Ben. Just…” She releases a frustrated sound from her throat. “In general, Rowan. And y’know what, I think I need it. I’m gonna drive myself crazy worrying about if Ben and I will ever work out, if I’m good for him now that things have changed or if he’s good for me, or if that’s even what we both want!” Rebekah sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. “I can’t do it anymore, Ro. And I don’t want to. I’m tired of it.”
“Okay,” Rowan soothes as she rises to her feet and crosses the small distance between them to pull her into a hug. The top buttons of the girl’s cardigan press into her shoulder and her glasses brush the top of her head. “That makes sense, Rebekah. You deserve a night out.”
Rebekah squeezes her tighter before letting go. She chuckles. “That’s what Diego said.”
“Then I guess he got something right.”
The two girls share a fond smile before gathering up the last of their things. Rowan offers Rebekah her arm and Rebekah laughs before looping them together. The few students left lingering in the common room follow after them with their eyes as they take the stairs back down to the corridor and for once the attention isn’t unwelcome. As Rowan pushes open the door, Rebekah finds that for the first time in a long while she feels reared and ready and confident and—
“Rebekah?”
The two girls stop, frozen in their tracks. A ghostly chill runs down her spine. That voice. She knows that voice.
She loves that voice.
But not today. Rebekah and Rowan spin on their feet, turning around to face the Gryffindor as he takes long strides to reach them. Rebekah squeezes Rowan’s hand as his eyes run up and down her form, brows knitted together in confusion.
Ben stops in front of them and Rebekah waits for him to speak with baited breath. “Rebekah? What are you all dressed up for?”
Rowan blows air out her mouth loudly and her dark eyes find Rebekah’s. The girl in question gives her a slight nod and she clicks her tongue, releasing their hands. “I guess that’s my cue.” She announces to Ben’s bemusement. She gestures behind her and shoots Ben a glare as she saunters away to her own magical evening.
Ben frowns as Rowan marches away before turning back to Rebekah. His expression is pinched and expectant. “I…have plans.” She explains.
“Plans?” He repeats, perturbed. “Like, Valentine’s Day plans?”
“That would be the holiday, yes.”
“With who?”
“Diego.”
Ben’s jaw locks, his eyes harden. Sobered up with realization. “Oh, I see.”
Rebekah opens her mouth but then closes it again. The words are there, on the tip of her tongue. No, you don’t. Because it isn’t a date. It isn’t what you think!
Because he isn’t you.
But she can’t seem to push them past her teeth. They stay there, stuck. Lodged in the base of her throat. She chews on them, turns them around in her mind. But looking at him now, it just doesn’t seem important.
“Did you need something?” She questions instead, remembering that he had caught them outside their dorm. He must have been looking for them.
“No,” He responds quickly, curtly. “Not anymore. I wouldn’t want to interrupt your…plans.”
Rebekah swallows thickly. “Okay, then. I’ll see you later.”
“See you later.”
And with that, Ben turns and leaves down the hall, disappearing in a hazy glow of Love Light Pink, as the prefects had called it. And though Rebekah turns the other way to meet with Diego, she thinks a part of her was left there and disappeared along with him.
Tumblr media
“So, what’s the plan?” Rebekah asks as Diego leads her out onto the streets of Hogsmeade, her arm looped through his. The weather is biting and cold, small little snowflakes landing and melting on her cheeks.
Diego grins warmly despite the chill. His hair styled in a middle part and his curls tickling his chin. “You’ll see.”
Rebekah squints at him in faux suspicion before giving up on the charade and allowing herself a half-smile. However, her curiosity piques when Diego takes her right past all the stores and shops. Instead, he angles her down a worn path in the snow, following another Hogwarts couple down to the forest line.
She sends him a questioning glance but he merely smiles forward.
They walk, chatting pleasantly, for a few more minutes until Rebekah begins to notice that the path is lined with heart shaped lanterns. But before she can inquire about this, they step into a clearing and Rebekah’s breath gets caught in her chest.
Right there, in the middle of the clearing, is a frozen pond. It is surrounded by freshly fallen snow on all sides that resembles more a blanket of sugar. And as if to frame the clearing, all the trees are incased almost decoratively in ice. Little icicles drip down from their branches as if frozen mid drop. Pale moonlight peaks in through the bare branches of the trees to shine admirably down onto the pond of ice.
“I suppose now would be a good time to ask if you can skate.” Diego laughs.
Rebekah shakes off her awe and giggles up at Diego. “A little. I can manage but I’m not exactly graceful.”
“That’s okay,” Diego says as he pulls out two pairs of ice skates from his bag he refused to tell her about earlier. “I won’t let you fall.”
“Promise?” Rebekah says but suddenly it sounds like it means more than it does. Her voice wavers slightly at the end a little desperately.
Diego seems to sense the same thing she does for he looks up from lacing up his skates. He stands without stumbling and reaches down to grab her hand. The look in his eyes is kind and gentle but they’re the wrong shade of brown. “I promise,” he says and Rebekah believes him, but something else, something foul and malicious still lingers in the back of her mind. “You’re safe with me.”
“What are we waiting for, then?” She tries for a smile but it’s surprisingly easier than she thought. She lifts up her own pair of skates that he brought for her. “You wanna help me with these?”
Tumblr media
The clock had already passed midnight by the time Rebekah wandered back to her dorm. Her and Diego had skated for nearly two hours before stepping into the Three Broomsticks for dinner. They snagged a table by the fireplace and Rebekah shed his Hufflepuff scarf he let her wear. They sat and talked over butterbeer and for a while the plan had worked. Rebekah forgot all about the vaults and her brother and Ben. She’d even go as far as to say that she enjoyed herself. Far more than she would have if she stayed home anyway.
She had left Diego at the door to his dorm on her own request. He expelled a lot more energy than she did trying to keep her going on the pond. When he stepped forward to hug her goodnight, she hugged back without thought. Still, a niggling sensation in the back of her head told her something wasn’t right.
Currently, she climbs the stairs to the astronomy tower, intent on finding her bed and ignoring Rowan’s likely fifty-thousand plus questions. Her shoes click against the floor as she drags herself up. But when she gets to the top they falter and Rebekah blinks in surprise at what she finds.
“Ben?” The boy in question turns to face her at the soft sound of her voice.
The first thing she notices about him is how tired he looks. She can see it in the matching dark clouds beneath his eyelashes and the way he blinks with practiced effort. Then she sees his clothes. His red jumper wrinkled and disheveled. His hair stands on ends in all directions like he’d run his hand through it a few too many times. Even his shoelaces on his left foot are untied.
“Rebekah.” He greets smoothly and it sends an altogether different shiver down her spine.
“What are you doing here? It’s late.”
“I’m aware of the time,” Ben says and Rebekah winces at his sharp tone. This causes him to soften and he frowns at her apologetically. “Sorry, I just…wanted to catch you on your way in.”
Rebekah remembers the time. “You…you weren’t waiting for me, were you?”
“What? No,” Ben says and they both know that it’s a lie but neither of them call him out on it. “I just got here actually. Perfect timing.”
“Perfect timing for what?”
At this, Ben flushes pink and it strikes Rebekah as something that the old Ben would do. But she quickly shakes that thought away. That Ben isn’t coming back and Ben doesn’t want him to. And maybe he’s right, she’s still not sure. But that’s precisely the problem.
“I…thought about what you said earlier and—” He grumbles something indecipherable under his breath. He sighs heavily. “Here.”
He produces something from behind his back that looks suspiciously box shaped. He barely looks at her as he hands it to her, his cheeks still glaringly red and matching his jumper. Rebekah takes the box with delicate hands and turns it over to look at the front.
“Chocolates?”
“With peanut butter,” Ben coughs and clears his throat, scratching at the back of his head. It’s strangely grumpy and sweet at the same time. And far too endearing to be fair. “I know you liked them last year so I asked my parents to send me some more of them this year for…today.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
Rebekah tries for a smile. “I love peanut butter.”
His expression softens. “I know.”
She hadn’t realized that she’d inched closer—or maybe it was him—until he was standing right in front of her. She lifts her chin to look him in the eye. Both of them are captured underneath the low, hazy pink glow of the lanterns still burning. It casts a warm shadow over his face and catches on the sparkles of his eyes. His breath fans across her lips and Rebekah has to hold back a shudder.
Ben sucks in a sharp breath. The chocolates are heavy in her hand. “Well, uh,” He shakes his head and turns around to leave. “Now that I’ve done that I think it’s time for me to lea—”
Without really knowing why or what exactly she was doing, her right hand reaches out to grab onto his forearm and with a strength she didn’t know she had she pulls him back in towards her. Ben stumbles slightly as he allows himself to be spun back around to face her. And neither of them are really sure who leaned in first, maybe she leaned up or he bent down, but before either of them know it his lips cover hers.
She’s not sure what she expected, but she’s still surprised anyway. She’s not sure where to keep her focus. On the hand that’s cupping her face with his thumb stroking circles over the apples of her cheek, the hand that’s fallen to her waist, or the way his lips feel finally pressed against hers.
She doesn’t know how long they stayed like that when he pulls away. The hand holding the chocolates he gave her reaches up to rest on his shoulder and the other gives his arm a gentle squeeze. When did she get so lightheaded?
“That was—”
“I hope you had a good night, Rebekah.”
He pulls away from her entirely, disentangling their arms and retreating a few steps back. With one last parting smile, he ducks back into the dark shadows and leaves her standing there grasping at straws.
She looks back down to the chocolates. There’s a sticky note on the top.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Rebekah sighs.
Back to square one.

Help me, I’m trapped in a Hogwarts Mystery fanfic (1)
(Fanfic +18)
So, I'm new to tumblr and all that. I hope that the automatic translator of your computers and cell phones can translate this for you.
Important notice: There is no specific couple in the story, just enjoy the trip.Having cleared this up, enjoy the story!
Chapter 1:
—¿A qué te refieres?
¿A qué te refieres?
—Quiero esperarte a ti.
—Oh no, finalmente te volviste loca.
—¿A quién ayudarás primero?
—No tengo preferencias.
—¿Y a dónde iríamos?

Headcanons for... Jealous Diego x Mc
Tumblr media
There is rumors that a new exchange student is coming to Hogwarts.
And the rumors turned out to be true.
People were gathered in the Great Hall waiting for the announcement. Then Dumbledore stepped up.
A boy with Ilvermorny school robes came in. And boy was he gorgeous.
So the people were kinda freaking out.
The boy got sorted into Gryffindor.
Diego was fine with girls not swooning over him
He liked having a break
But then Diego noticed that this guy was hitting on MC a lot.
Like so much, MC was uncomfortable.
The three had the same DADA class. And oh boy shit was about to happen.
Was Diego an aggressive person? No. Was Diego someone to throw dirt on someone name? No.
But (Y/N) was fake laughing to get the guy off of them? Yes.
This guy was a straight up idiot. And Diego didn't like the thought of (Y/N) really liking him.
So there he was, trapping (Y/N) between a wall and him and trying to KISS THEM.
And (Y/N) was trying to break free
DESPERATELY.
And Diego snapped.
Diego walked up to them flashed an innocent smile and took (Y/N) by their hand and intertwined his fingers with (Y/N)s. And pushed the guy away.
Wrapping his arm around he said "Come, Professor Rakepick is going to start the lesson." As the pair walked away
And guess what?
(Y/N) played along.
Which made everything 10x better. The guy was baffled.
(Y/N) and Diego sat together. And passed notes.
"Sorry if it made you uncomfortable. But it sure was better than you getting continuously hit on by that guy."
"Don't worry. I really needed your help. I wonder how someone can be that ignorant. "
And the note passing went on and on followed by giggles. Rakepick snatched one of the notes. And read it out loud.
"Anyway, wanna meet for lunch?"it said. "Mr. Caplan, I'm afraid you and Miss (Y/N) won't be meeting for lunch since you both be cleaning my classroom." "What-" "Detention." She said and continued her lesson.
After the lesson, the rumors oh rumors.
"Diego Caplan got jealous of the new students" "Diego and (Y/N) are dating." and such.
When detention came, things were at ease. You talked, gossiped a little.
And realization hit Diego like a truck.
Him. Diego Caplan. Crushed on. Loved. Liked. Y/N
The detention ended, you missed dinner, you were hungry. What did you do?
Stole food from the kitchen and ate it on the Astronomy Tower.
The pair strargazed in the night sky.
In the end Diego was very sweet to Y/N. Complimented their hair, flirted a few times, told his funny memories of him and his family...
Y/N checked their clock, to their luck the clock was nearing midnight.
Y/N thanked Diego and kissed him on his cheek.
Diego be like dis:

Sea of Carnations
Related: Flowers | The Spanish Rose
A/N: So this is for an event going on in Amino, the theme is May Flowers and we have to make an entry involving a flower. Of course I had to use Diego and Veruca since they’re the only ship of mine that I know has their own flower. But also because other than picnic date nights, flowers are a staple in their relationship! Specifically carnations.

Carnations, one of the oldest cultivated flowers in the world. Carnations are a symbolism of devotion, love and admiration.
When they were still in Hogwarts, Diego spent an entire week gifting Veruca flowers hoping to gain her attention. Sadly for Diego, Veruca rejected every bouquet and even gave her classmates the gift to show Diego she wasn’t interested in his advances. That was until the last day where she received carnations, pleasantly surprised yet bashful, she accepted Diego’s gift as well as his offer to take a walk within the forest. Seeing that the carnations were the only flowers Veruca accepted, Diego made it a routine to always give her a carnation whenever he had the chance. You can say though that Diego’s charm slowly worked on her.
On the night of their engagement, Diego proposed not just with a ring but also an enchanted carnation to never wilt. This enchanted flower is to represent his undying love and devotion to her.

Fairy Lights
First of all, happy fucking birthday Rebecca.
Second of all, I blame @thecursedvaultchild for dragging me into this ship.
Enjoy.
Rebecca put up the last fairy light around the statue and jumped down with a smile.
She had decorated the Courtyard with fairy lights. Where she got them doesn’t matter. All it matters was that her date is coming soon and she’s extremely nervous.
“You can do this, Lord,” she told herself as she tugged at her purple ao dai. It was beautiful, but was she enough for it? No, stop it. “It’s just a date. With Diego. Who you fancied for a while. No pressure.”
Rebecca took a deep breath and thought back to her conversation with Andre before she went on the date.
“You look nervous,” Andre said with a slight smile as he zipped up her dress. “A Knut for your thoughts?”
Rebecca pursed her lips. “I don’t know. What am I doing going on this date? This is Diego, one of the best duelers AND dancers in all of Hogwarts. He’s way out of my league.”
“Stop that,” he snipped, poking at her cheek, before going back to doing her hair. The length made it a bit harder to style it but he can deal with it. “You’re not so bad at dueling yourself. Have you seen what you did to Lockwood last week? That coward ran off with his tail between his legs.”
He saw her crack a smile at the memory and continued. “You’re talented at Charms, you’re a master at art and Arithmancy, you know your way around COMC, and you’re a great dancer as well. I should know this, I was your date for the Celestial Ball, after all. All those things make up for the areas you’re not so good at and it makes up who you are. You need to stop putting yourself down.”
“Harder than it looks, Dre,” Rebecca frowned at the mirror. “I don’t know… there are all sorts of what-ifs. Like—“
“What if this turns out like Charlie?” He asked. “It won’t be. It was a mutual break-up and both of you thought it’s better suited not to be in a relationship. Which is fine. But Caplan? He genuinely likes you. It’s not like, one of his flings or something, but he genuinely likes you. Lana thinks he does anyway.”
“Really?”
“Yup.” He finishes the last touches on her hair and pulled back. “You can do this, Bex, just be your true self. Don’t pretend to be someone you aren’t. Just be happy and believe in yourself.”
“Believe in yourself,” she repeated to herself. “Be your true self. Don’t pretend.”
She sat down at the fountain, facing the entrance of the courtyard and closed her eyes, feeling the wind blowing against her face. It was a beautiful night, a perfect one for a date, and the fact that they weren’t supposed to be out this late gives her a bit of giddiness that comes with breaking the rules.
Given, she’s a prefect, and she shouldn’t be condoning this, but still.
It’s… nice to be out.  Forgetting her troubles for a moment, she lets herself smile.
“Your smile is like the sunshine, Sunshine.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but let out a slight laugh as she opened her eyes and looked up, seeing her date smiling down at her.
“That was absolutely horrible,” she said as Diego helped her up. “What do you think?” She asked a bit nervously.
“It’s beautiful,” he said, and he wasn’t looking at the fairy lights decorating the courtyard, no he was looking straight at her.
Rebecca felt her ears redden. “I meant the decorations, you doofus.”
“Who said it was about the decorations in the first place? They can never outshine you.” Diego laughed when she just buried her face in his shoulder in response. “You’re adorable when you blush.”
“And whose fault was it in the first place?” She asked, stepping back to pout at him, but it ruined the effect with the gigantic blush still on her face.
No matter how many times he flirted with her, she still blushes and it frustrates her to no end, because he should not still be having this effect on her after months of pinning and pinning, that’s so unfair.
“Mine of course,” Diego said with a grin as he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “And proud of it.”
“Obviously, since you take great delight in making me blush,” she says, rolling her eyes as she poked at his cheek.
“What can I say?” He grinned as he gently took hold of her hand, catching her by surprise. Kissing every one of her fingers, he looked down at her with a smirk that always drives her mad without fail. “You look gorgeous in red.”
Rebecca’s face turned completely scarlet. “D-D-Diego!” She splutters.
“What? I’m just saying the truth.” Diego took hold of her chin and tilted it up. “Look, there’s the red now.”
“Oh my god,” Rebecca said. “You are impossible.”
“But you love me,” Diego pointed out, laughing when Rebecca didn’t even bother to deny that, since she was the one who confessed in the first place and asked him out on a date, before running off and dealing with Andre making fun of her the entire day.
Imagine her surprise when he corners her the next day and agrees.
“Shut up,” she says instead, swiping at his arm.
“Make me,” Diego shoots back with a smirk.
Rebecca reddened even more if that was possible, but grabbed his collar and tugged him down to her level, ignoring the yelp that escaped, and placed a kiss on the side of his mouth
“Hope that counts,” she tells him as she lets go, then runs off.
“You little minx!” Diego laughs as he goes after her. “Get back here!”
Seems like he was prepared this time, because he easily catches her and brings her out into a twirl, taking joy in her gasp of surprise, before pulling her to his chest. “Gotcha.”
Her face was burning at the proximity. “Ah, so I can’t really pull the same trick twice, huh.”
“Nope,” he said, popping the ‘p’. He tapped her nose. “How bold of you. Did you really try for a full-on mouth kiss? On the first date?” He teases.
“Still, pretty bold.” He runs a thumb over her scars, sending shivers down her spine and looks at her in the eyes with a soft look that made her heart flutter.
Rebecca feels her lips quirk into a smile. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“No reason at all,” he said, curling a lock of her hair around his finger and tucking it behind her ear again. “I was just thinking… the atmosphere is rather romantic, don’t you think? How about we… I don’t know,” he leans down and purrs into her ear, “dance?” He pulls away, smirking at her red face. “If there’s music of course.”
She blinks, trying to regain her composure. “T-That’s what I was planning to do before you decided to make me breathless as always. And I know a way to fix the lack of music.”
Seconds later, music starts “mysteriously” playing in the background. Rebecca grinned up at him.
“A girl has to be prepared.”
“A beautiful girl,” he adds as he lets go. Before she can react, he sweeps into a bow and held out a hand. “May I have this dance?”
Rebecca laughed. “You didn’t have to ask in the first place.” And, with twinkling hazel eyes, she took his hand.
They fit like pieces in a puzzle and danced beautifully. Rebecca was extremely grateful her mother had taught her how to dance, or else she would have tripped over her feet and step on Diego’s foot and that will end up in a disaster. But for now, there was no misstep, or stepping on feet, and she couldn’t help but laugh every time she twirled and twirled, and before she knew it, he was bringing her out into a spin and sweeping her into a dip.
“Oh!” she gasped, finding herself face to face with him. “Hi there.”
His gaze was surprisingly soft as his hand spins into her hair. The smirk that appeared when they were dancing seems to fall away into a fond smile.
It left her speechless. To see that smile aimed at her.
“You missed earlier, y’know,” He said suddenly. “Allow me to fix it.” Rebecca blinked. “Wha--?”
She was swiftly cut off when he brought her head up and pressed his lips against hers and making the butterflies in her stomach flutter furiously.
Warmth seems to spread through her entire body. Starting from her fingertips, all the way to the tips of her toes. She melted in his arms and went to kiss back, fluttering her eyes shut and tilting her head to give him better access.
It was her first kiss and…
Wow.
Wow.
Unlike the kisses he shared with Summer, it wasn’t hot, passionate, and fierce, it was gentle, sweet, as though she was fragile and he was afraid of hurting her.
(In many ways, that was so so true.)
Her hands slipped from his shoulders to his hair, threading long fingers through the brown locks. She felt him smile against her lips as he pulled her up to her feet, hands lowering to her hips to pull her closer.
Her heart threatened to burst out of her chest. And it was all over too soon.
They pulled away at the same time, panting for breath. He stared down at her as though she hung the stars and moon in the sky.
“Wow,” she said, and that was all she can manage.
Diego’s lips twitched into a smile. “Wow indeed.”
He went to pull her in for more, but then a small meow cut through the air, freezing them in their tracks.
“I guess we overstayed our welcome,” Rebecca said, her hushed voice filled with glee as she flicked her wand and turned the music off. Another wave took down the fairy lights. “Come on, let’s go before we get caught.”
“Definitely,” Diego grinned as he kissed her neck, making her squeak. “Don’t want to get detention, eh, Miss Prefect?”
Rebecca grabbed his collar and tugged him towards her, pressing a kiss on the side of his mouth and smirked when he freezes up.
“Oh look at that, I missed,” she said innocently, her eyes twinkling mischievously. “Race me to the Common Room and maybe I won’t miss.”
He smirked. “Oh, you’re on.”
And they raced out of the Courtyard just in time to miss Mrs. Norris passing by, giggling like the teenagers they are and not the battle-worn warriors that fought and fought against Vault after Vault.
They may have kissed more outside the Common Room.
They may have talked and talked until the wee hours of the morning, before cuddling on the couch.
They may have done both of those things, but all that mattered is that Penny’s squeal of delight after finding them asleep on the couch together woke them up.
Rebecca let out a groan as she buried her face in Diego’s chest and, if possible, snuggled closer to him. She felt him chuckle and reach up to play with her hair, coaxing her gently to go back to sleep.
Tuning out Penny’s excited chatter about whatever she’s rambling about, Rebecca slipped back to the arms of Morpheus.
She’ll deal with the rumors later.

Here it is, the Miraculous Ladybug AU for Laurent King and @samsamfromechedel // @booksviolinsandembroidery‘s MC, Samuel Gabehart !
To those not familiar with the show, I strongly advise you to watch it ! It’s an amazing, light-hearted show that is ideal to watch during a gloomy rainy day.
To those watching the show... here it is, and I dearly hope you will enjoy !
Samuel Gabehart is a young student in Paris, who seems like the perfect average guy at first glance. Well, he might be, if you ignore the fact that he’s a Miraculous holder
The Miraculous of the Ladybug, which holds the immense power of creation, given to him due to his helpfulness and strong sense of justice
Diego Caplan is a known model, and classmate to Samuel. The latter harbours a strong crush on him, to the point that as soon as he sees him he becomes a blushing, stuttering mess. He’s kind, helpful, charming and humorous.
And he holds, unbeknownst to Samuel, the Black Cat Miraculous, associated with the power of destruction.
Ladybug and Chat Noir are a known duo of superheroes, and are, in fact, our dear Samuel and Diego ! Neither of them knows each other’s identities, however, and Diego ends up crushing hard on Ladybug... who is, in fact, Samuel.
Their sworn enemy is known as Hawkmoth, an evil Miraculous holder who can create Akumas, small butterflies meant to target upset people and akumatize them, hence turning them into supervillains.
Which, obviously, Ladybug and Chat Noir need to fight.
In the midst of their war against Hawkmoth, Diego Caplan and Samuel Gabehart must also deal with their personal lives.
Diego, the popular model with an emotionally distant father, and Samuel, a young boy who just wishes to be normal around his crush and not worry about his double life for once.
Samuel has a tight circle of friends, his best friend being Laurent Dorian King.
Laurent’s father is a renowned swimmer now retreating, and his entire legacy rests on Lau’s shoulders. As a result, he trains relentlessly, alongside with his classmate Barnaby Lee.
Barnaby Lee, who has a crush on Lau... and who is eventually offered the Monkey Miraculous by Ladybug.
Barnaby adapts quickly to his new superhero self, Roi Singe. He often ends up lending a hand to Ladybug and Chat Noir during their fights against akumatized civilians...
... and he ultimately uses his hero-self in order to talk to his longtime crush, Laurent King.
He knows he shouldn’t talk to Lau as Roi Singe, that he should try and flirt with him by being himself, but... he’s scared. Terrified, even.
And Lau starts to like the superhero... who is, in fact, Barnaby.
And now, how will all of this turn out ? That’s what’s fun with AUs: it’s time to explore all of this !

It was rather cold.
With the fall beginning to bleed into winter, the air seems to be thinning and the world appears to be losing its color. Preparing for the chill the passing of the seasons will bring, Lyubka is starting to regret not bringing an extra layer to practice.
“Andreeva!” The Captain shouts, successfully gaining the Hufflepuff’s attention. “You remember the plunge play?”
Lyubka nods.
“Good,” He says and her grip on her broom tightens. “Then do it.”
Their newest recruit, a third year chaser, readies himself for the onslaught. He shivers involuntarily, pressing his lips firmly together to stop his teeth from chattering. She offers him a reassuring smile before launching off.
He holds himself well, executioning the dive almost flawlessly. Cadmus, she remembers his name was. After having watched them going through their entire playbook on multiple occasions, it seems as though he’s finally ready to prove himself.
Their captain gives him a curt nod of acknowledgement, the slight attention brings a smile to his face, dimples poking into his numb cheeks. As for herself, Lyubka offers him a stiff thumbs up. His smile widens.
They continue on, going over each of their plays for the next match, Lyubka’s focus sharp and concentrated. It’s only when a certain flash of gold meets her eyes that she takes pause.
Diego. He sits in his usual spot, in the middle of the temporarily empty stands, nose buried into his characteristic striped scarf. When she catches his eye, he waves, his fingers wiggling effortlessly in a flirty hello.
She tries to scoff, but the corners of her mouth betray her, unable to restrain from smirking back in kind. Well, she assumes he’s smirking, not that she can actually tell with that scarf.
It’s another half hour before the captain calls it a day and a chorus of relieved groans erupt from the players. Landing their brooms, they disappear into the lockers, more than ready to be out of their sweaty practice gear.
Lyubka steps out, feeling the sharp chill that permeates the air nip at her uncovered cheeks. Her hands begin to shake and she pulls them up to her mouth to blow hot air across them. Rubbing them together, she starts on her usual trek up to the stands to join Diego.
“You know,” She calls upon reaching her destination, having pulled her practice gloves back on for some form of warmth. She sits down to his left. “I’m the one who expels all my energy in practice. The least you could do is meet me down there.”
Diego grins, all soft angles and bright eyes. “But the view up here is so much better.”
She arches a bemused eyebrow. “It’s just the Quidditch pitch.”
The boy sighs, dragging out an unopened water bottle from his bag, passing it to her instinctually. “Come on, I know you’re a Quidditch star,” He jests, and she pauses with the water halfway to her mouth, smiling. “But surely even you can see past the stands.”
Her head tilts in thought. Truthfully, she’s not sure she ever has. It’s not as though she physically can’t see beyond the pitch, she’s just never given herself reason too. A right shame, if she’s honest.
So, taking a quick gulp from her water, she closes it and finally casts a look around the place.
With the castle being off in the direction behind her, she finds the pitch surrounded on all sides by thick forest. Large trees and vast green grass spreads out for miles, brought even more to life by the setting sun, getting closer and closer to the horizon. The sky pales, a calm before the storm so to speak, before the vibrant colors tear through it.
“See?” Diego winks, pulling out a bag of snacks, offering her a cookie that no doubt came from Penny. “Told you it’s worth it.”
Lyubka returns the expression. “I suppose you’re right.”
“But you do have a point,” At her questioning look, he sighs and sets his food aside. “You work hard and I should be more considerate.”
The brunette shakes her head, her hand reaching out to lay across his arm of its own accord. “Diego, you come out here every practice to keep me company and hydrated,” She proves this by shaking the water bottle he’d given her. “No matter the weather, no matter the time, no matter whatever else is going on. You come and that’s more than enough.”
“But I could do more,” Before she can protest, he holds up a hand, silently asking for permission to continue. She gives it. “I just wish you wouldn’t work yourself so hard, Lyubka. You’re already exceptional, you could stand a rest every now and again. Between Quidditch, the vaults, and everyone else’s problems, you’re wearing yourself thin.”
Lyubka shrinks, knowing he’s right. It’s always been a habit of hers, second nature, to take on everything that she can. Sometimes she forgets that she has a limit.
Diego hesitates beside her, but eventually unwraps his scarf from around his neck. Instead, he drapes it across her shoulders. Her instincts tell her to fight it, insist he should keep it, but with the soft way his eyes shine with the kind of satisfaction only selfless kindness can give, she decides against it.
It’s soft against her skin, warm, and smells starkly like mint and honey.
“I don’t know if it’s any of my business,” Diego murmurs, voice slightly more clear without the scarf. “But is there a reason behind that?”
“Behind what?”
He shrugs as if unable to find the words. “Your, uh.. competitive streak?” He asks slowly, testing the sentence on his tongue.
“Competitive streak?” She gasps dramatically, though it’s a half effort.
A low chuckle sounds from his throat. “What else can you call it?” She ponders this for a moment but, as expected, comes up short. “See?”
A lull drifts in the conversation, the two of them falling quiet. But thankfully, much to Lyubka’s relief, it is not uncomfortable. She feels like she doesn’t need words. It would be impossible for them to compare to the ache in the apples of her cheeks whenever she seeks his company. Or the constricting of her chest whenever he looks at her with those eyes, full of passion and mirth and genuine interest. It’s nice, she thinks, to feel this way.
After all she’s gone through at Hogwarts, all the chaos and adventure, it’s refreshing to have someone who puts her at peace whom she can come back to. Truth be told, she wasn’t certain she’d even have the opportunity for something as trivial and exciting as a crush. Makes her almost feel her own age. For once, she has the chance to be normal.
But she will never be normal.
“It’s a bad habit, my competitiveness,” She explains and Diego nods from beside her, passing her a pretzel. She smiles. “I think it’s a twin thing.” She wrinkles her nose.
“Why do you say that?” He asks, a sincere curiosity lacing his tone.
“Well, when people are always pitting you against someone, it becomes second nature to try and prove yourself.”
She turns to him now, and her breath catches in her throat.
It seems that she had not taken into account the bleeding sun. The rich hues and vibrant shades of yellow and orange and gold strung out across the skyline. Currently, the sun is barely peeking out behind distant hills, bidding the beautiful land a dutiful farewell.
Yet all her focus is on Diego. The halo of golden light surrounds him as if the strands couldn’t help but to touch him, bask gratefully in his presence. Whisks of amber cast a warm glow across his expectant expression, his face a radiant canvas for their natural works of art. For who could ever find a muse better than him?
The image before her is a stark contrast to the chill around her and she’s suddenly unsure exactly how it happened.
His brown eyes crinkle with a knowing smirk and she looks away to hide the flush in her cheeks that is in no way related to the cold.
“That doesn’t seem very fair,” He remarks and a small chuckle escapes her.
“It’s not,” she sighs, a frown tugging at her lips. “It’s hard to be my own person sometimes. I can never just be Lyubka, or even Lyubomira Andreeva. It’s always Lyubka and Bori or Bori and Lyubka. People are always comparing us. If Bori can do something, I’m expected to be able to do it too and at the same level of expertise.”
“And if not?”
“Then it makes me weak,” The very thought, and all her pent up frustration, almost pulls pinpricks to her eyes. She blinks them back. “Or thick and dull and just altogether… less. And my family does not settle for less.”
He doesn’t speak, sensing that she isn’t finished. He doesn’t have to wait long. “It’s not usually the kind of thing that would bother me,” She admits, voice wavering. “But when you spend all your time with someone, only to never measure up..?”
“It’s enough to drive anyone mad.” Diego finishes and her eyes snap to him.
Atanas.
Will he become the measure by which all Andreevi are judged? She worries about this on nights where her brain is tired yet sleep does not grace her. Will people look at her and see Bori? Or will they catch her eye and think of Atanas?
Will she ever be Lyubka?
Is she destined to be just another branch on her family tree?
“Well, if it makes you feel any better,” Diego whistles, giving her a sideways glance. “I know tons of things she can do that you can’t.”
She blinks. Once. Twice.
Come again?
“For example,” He starts, seemingly oblivious to her entire reaction. “Liz tells me that she can sleep for hours into the day if left undisturbed! And that she can never remember where she leaves her wand. Also, did you know she never laughs at my jokes?”
For a moment he appears so absolutely offended, Lyubka can’t help but laugh. It bubbles from her throat unbidden and soon Diego is joining her. The sound twinkles pleasantly in her ears like wind chimes.
“What was that about?” She questions after the laughter has died down, unable to help herself.
For a moment, he stutters, and Lyubka swears the red of his cheeks match hers.
He shrugs, trying his best to appear nonchalant. “I don’t know. I guess I just wanted you to know that what you can and can’t do makes you you,” His shoulders raise as he takes a deep breath and laces their fingers together, an all too earnest look in his eyes. “And just so you know, there’s so much that you can do that she can’t.”
“Like what?” She hears herself ask before she even registers she’s speaking.
“She doesn’t practice dueling with me, or sneak down into the kitchens to swipe some midnight snacks,” The words leave his mouth in a flurry of jumbled thoughts, but really, when have genuine emotions ever made sense? “Bori can’t challenge me like you can, or see me the way you do. She can’t make me smile or make me lost in thought like you do…”
Diego reaches out a hand to tuck a stray strand of hair she hadn’t even realized was there behind her ear. He allows it to linger there. She doesn’t push him away. “She can never be you, Lyubka.”
Neither of them are quite sure who leaned in first, but suddenly his lips miss hers. They land centimeters away, on her cheek. Her eyes flutter shut as her heart skips uncontrollably. His lips, soft and chilled on her hot face, move slightly closer, catching just the corner of her mouth. Hers twitch as if they want to pull into a smile but are too preoccupied with other thoughts to do so.
Suddenly, he stops. His eyes wander up her face until they find hers and without any pretense, Lyubka leans forward.
He kisses her softly, gently, but in earnest and with the vigor of someone who has ached to do something for a very long time. The entire world around them falls away until Diego Caplan is the only thing in her mind. She smiles into his mouth.
They pull apart and Diego grins in disbelief. “Yeah,” He drawls, his cheeks a pretty pink. “I don’t think Bori could do that either.”
She laughs and pulls him in, her arms wrapping around his neck as the sun finally sets beyond them.
