What do people think about whether Diane is religious?

I think most people in the show are Schrödinger's Christian but if anyone has picked up hints that make them think one way or the other (or if there is actually an answer in the show), it would help me out with a detail in the next Safe Place fic.

Sometimes when I see gifsets of Aaron with Chas and Paddy hugging in celebration or in comfort, I think of how Robert hasn't had that since he was a teenager. And he'll never have parents again. Honestly makes me so sad!

If he gets out of that place and comes home, he'll have to face a wishy washy little sister and an angry ex-husband. Ex in-laws who merely tolerated him. He's not seen his little boy in years. Liv is dead and so is his gran, and Diane's moved away.

I'm really not an Andy fan, but it actually would be really nice if the Sugden boys could have a chance to reunite in the future and put the past behind them. It would be great for Robert to have a brother / best friend, even if it was just temporary. A guest stint from Kelvin if Robert ever comes back would be so good.

To your "never watched 2019" anon, please let them know, I will keep them company in the club 😂 Couldn't do it then. Can't do it now. The Vic SL started out strong and initially the Robron SL accompanying it was solid as well. Robert struggling with his guilt of not being able to protect his sister and being "very Robert" about the situation. Aaron challenging Robert on his stance and bringing his own story to make Robert understand, Vic standing here ground, Diane being the confused mediator that she always was, Aaron being a friend to Vic etc. Those early days have us some quite intense and honest to God complex sls that tested Domestic Robron as a couple. And Ryan and Danny were absolutely stupendously brilliant in them. Personally, I rate some of those fight scenes to be equally enjoyable as some of the 2016 SLs. And it was genuinely a welcome relief after the clumsy way in which Emmerdale had decided to resurrect the surrogacy SL. Robron having to make that choice between supporting their sisters or paying for the surrogacy, dividing up their responsibilities and chores showed how the couple had matured into husband|husband from affair era Robron. It was beautiful, deep, very Robron and not entirely badly crafted/written.

Then the news broke. And I remember that it was the first time I knew what the phrase "being hit by a ton of bricks" meant. And it didn't help that the SL kept getting more and more ridiculous. Somehow, the village with Dingles, Sugdens was completely powerless against Lee!!🙆‍♀️Aaron was reduced to being almost a sidekick in some of those fight scenes with Lee, which made no sense, and most scenes were about Robert and Vic and not Robron in the Mill!! If it wasn't for Ryan and Danny's powerful acting in those handful of scenes that focused on Robron... Anyway, I gave up. It hurt too much. And now, all that SL leading up to Robert being incarcerated and Aaron moving on has been put in question by Emmerdale themselves, so I don't need to watch it! 😂🤣 Didn't stop me yelling at the show though. There is a part of me, I think that will always be sad that Robron didn't get their story. Aaron being there for Robert and Robert coping in prison and how they keep the family together for 14 years (or less) is a sl that was made for Robron. They would get through it. I know they would have. They are it for each other. And they know it. I don't care what anybody says.

You're right and you should say it, anon. But honestly, every problem you (and I and everyone with half a brain) had with the shitshow that was the second half of 2019... it's all to blame on this asshole (affectionate)

So if he could just stop climbing coconut trees and filming capybaras for a bit and come back as Robert, that would be grand!

what makes it worse how Jack treated Robert is Jack used to be like Robert not interested in the farm, cocky, wanted what he wanted, had loads of affairs so him to judge robert for not being Jack Sugden Jr was hypocritical and don't get me started on the violent, hot headed, rude, entitled, cuckoo in the nest Andy ugh

I never understood why or how he favour andy over his own flesh and blood esp after things he did but dislikes his own son. I like Robert don't get what is so special about Andy, he not the nice guy people make out. just like Jack was not the loving father people make out, he belittled and ignored Robert, ignored Victoria and her grief too, and Jack actually was not fond of Andy at first, Robert even said to Andy at his stag night (the 2nd time marrying Katie) that Jack saw Andy as trouble and that he bad influence on Robert then suddenly Andy showed interest in farm and Robert made clear he not be one take over his affections suddenly started to switch his affections to Andy and then suddenly all for adopting Andy into the family then Robert was the bad one who would not leave poor little Andy alone. I wonder if Andy feared Jack would start switch his affections to Daz when he turned up. what kind of father plays favourites, what kind father makes you feel not good enough and has conditions on that you made feel loved and good enough, yet Vic, Diane and Andy all idolise him. It no wonder Robert is way he with his affections, is if his dad switches his affections when it suits him. He also only took on Daz for Andy and he was seen as a nuiscance too. But it was ok when he hero worshipped Andy but when begin to grow out it he was suddenly bad and kicked out the family, kind like Robert, but Andy behaviour was all excused, Jack and Andy both put on bloody pedestal's while Robert and Daz were the bad one's and nuisances not saying their behaviour is ok but Andy and Jack are hypcorites. Also hate how Andy usurped Robert place in the family and never cringed

July 31st summary

We watched from 2015/11/27 p3 to 2015/12/01 p1.

Emma tells the police that the stalking is all in Chas's head. Diane and the Sugden clan find out that she has cancer, discovered during the operation to fix the stabbing wound. Chas struggles.

Lachlan asks Robert not to screw his mum over in court the next day and Aaron asks him whether he knows who shot him. Robert doesn't say much, just tells him not to worry, and Aaron can see that he knows more than he's saying. In court, Robert portrays a sympathetic version of Chrissie's fire-setting.

Aaron thinks Chas's idea of someone stalking her is actually just in her head. Cain wants to believe Chas but Emma backs up Aaron's thoughts, saying Chas might have PTSD. Chas wakes up at the farm and runs through the woods, hallucinating voices and people from the past.

Emmerdale boss reveals tragedy which brings Aaron back in return story

Fans were delighted by the news that Danny Miller is reprising his role as Aaron Dingle in time for Emmerdale’s 50th anniversary.

And, as is characteristic of him, he is going to be central to some huge drama in the village, as he is set to discover Sandra Flaherty’s (Joanne Mitchell) cruel treatment of his sister Liv (Isobel Steele).

Not only that, but his mum Chas (Lucy Pargeter) is cheating on Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) with Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) – something that would likely lead to an explosive reaction from Aaron if he found out.

Aaron is among three confirmed returns so far, alongside Elizabeth Estensen as Diane Sugden and Amy Walsh as Tracy Metcalfe.

Metro.co.uk caught up with Emmerdale’s bosses and producer Jane Hudson shed light on what initially brings Aaron back home.

‘Aaron’s brought back initially to see Faith because as we know, she has cancer,’ she told us.

‘When he arrives back, he sees that Sandra is there and suspects that not everything is as it seems.

‘And then of course, his mum’s having an affair – if he finds out about that, it will help him decide whether he sticks around or not.’

And we also wanted to know if the show had drawn the line at three returns – or if there might be other comebacks on the horizon.

Interestingly, it was not ruled out at all.

What happened in the night before the wedding…

(Sorry, not beta read 🙈, all mistakes are mine)

He’s tossing and turning and tossing and turning. It’s too hot and when he pushes the blanket down it gets too cold. Nothing’s right here, the bed too small, too hard, somewhere is a clock relentlessly ticking and it drives him mad. Aaron is ready to jump up and throw the goddamn thing out of the window.

He’s back in the flat above the pub. In the guest room, mind you, because his old room was supposed to be Gracie’s nursery.

Aaron sighs and rubs his face exasperated. Now he’s thinking about her and his heart aches. The little sister he never met, but is going to miss forever.

His mum’s a mess. She tries to hide it, the attempt is bad though and his dad isn’t doing much better. Aaron’s not sure how they’ll make it through tomorrow if he’s honest.

Bloody hell, he isn’t sure how he’ll make it through tomorrow!

Marrying Robert.

He’s really going to marry Robert?

It seems so unreal after all that happened. Sometimes, when he thinks about it, like now, it’s a little overwhelming. The thought of how far they’ve come. What happened in those past three and a half years was the stuff of those stupid soaps Diane loves to watch. And yet, here they are. In only a few hours he’s going to meet Robert at the altar.

He’s really going to marry Robert.

Like, for real this time. With a vicar and flowers and matching suits and all. Aaron folded invitation cards and table decoration. This is happening. And in front of the whole village no less. A gay wedding in Emmerdale. With Aaron Dingle and Robert Sudgen as grooms. Who would have seen that coming, eh? Not Aaron, that’s for sure. His mind wanders back to his teenage years, ten years back, when he was that terrified kid, lost and confused and so damn angry at the world.

I’d rather live a lonely life than a gay one, he once shouted into Paddy’s face. The memory brings a sad smile on his face.

If he’d only known then what he knows now.

Love isn’t scary, love isn’t a mug’s game. And in the end it doesn’t matter if it’s a gay love or not. Robert is his friend, his home, the anchor that keeps him from spiralling and ultimately the reason why he’s still here.

And Aaron is going to marry Robert.

How is supposed to sleep when his heart keeps hiccuping in his chest, his hands are clammy and his brain won‘t give him a break? Aaron groans in frustration, tossing and turning once more, rearranging the pillow, but it still doesn‘t feel right.

He‘s missing Robert.

This is pathetic, seriously, it’s only night! Aaron knows that, technically, he can‘t change the feeling though. There is no pillow like Robert‘s chest and no godforsaken ticking watch can replace the steady thumping of Robert‘s heart.

Minutes turn into hours, stretching endlessly.

At some point, Aaron hasn‘t even noticed, he must have dozed off, because the next thing he notices is that his head is lying on something solid, something warm and moving. Something familiar.

Long and strong arms are wrapping around him, holding him tight and Aaron grins. They are supposed to stay the night apart - his family insisted, because of bad luck or whatever and he thinks if this is a dream, it‘s a very pleasant one and he doesn‘t want it to end.

“Are you real?“ he mumbles.

“Couldn‘t sleep without your stupid beard giving me a rash,“ Robert mutters and yawns.

“Shut up,“ Aaron smiles and rubs his head contently against the body underneath him.

This is so much better.

“Go to sleep, Mr Sugden,“ his fiancé says. His soon-to-be-husband. He sounds like he‘s smiling himself.

“…‘kay.“ Aaron pauses.

He‘s going to marry Robert.

"Mr Dingle.“

Robert snuck out quietly from the bed at 8 AM and made sure that Aaron was still sleeping. It was an important day. Aaron would only be turning thirty once. He checked on the children and saw that the twins were still sleeping but that Seb was awake. 

“Hey, you ready to help with Daddy’s birthday surprise?” Robert asked Seb. 

Seb nodded and climbed out of bed. Seb took Robert’s hand, and they walked downstairs together.

“You remember where the card you made for daddy is?” Seb nodded. “Good, get it and then we’ll get breakfast ready.”

“Toast! Daddy likes toast!” Seb exclaimed excitedly. “And pancakes!”

“Yes, monkey, we will have toast and pancakes and chocolate, of course. Come on, let’s get everything ready. Nana Chas and granny Diane and grama Sarah will be here too.”

Seb excitedly helped Robert prepare everything. Liv was on twin duty in case they woke up so that Aaron would stay asleep. 

It was 9:30 when Liv came downstairs with Annie and Jacob, who were excited and happy. Liv put them down, and they played with their new toys. 

At 9:45, Robert got messages in their group chat from his mother in law, his step mum, and his mum to check if everything was ready. When he responded that it was, they all arrived promptly. 

The children all ran to their grans and hugged them. Then, it was time to wake up Aaron and surprise him with everyone there. 

Robert strolled upstairs and into their bedroom. He saw Aaron peacefully lying in bed, just resting. Robert played down next to him and kissed his cheek to wake him up. 

“Happy birthday, husband!” Robert exclaimed when Aaron woke up.

Aaron lazily leaned on Robert’s chest and snuggled up closer to him. Robert cuddled with Aaron for a few minutes but knew they needed to go downstairs. Their mothers and children were waiting for them. Robert kissed Aaron’s cheek and tickled him. 

“Come on, Mr, it’s time to get up, and you have people waiting for us downstairs. Our children want to see you and wish you a happy birthday. So it’s time to get up,” Robert said. 

Aaron groaned, and Robert helped him up and out of bed. Aaron got ready, and the two of them headed downstairs. 

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Everyone downstairs yelled. 

Sarah held Seb, while Diane had Annie and Chas had Jacob. They helped the toddlers wave their hands at their father, and the toddlers clapped excitedly. 

Aaron went and kissed first Seb, then Annie and Jacob and gave each one of them a cuddle. He then said hello to his mum and mothers in law. 

When Aaron turned to face the table, he saw that Robert had set the table with toast and chocolate spread and some pancakes with chocolate chips and fruit. 

Aaron went to Robert and hugged him. “Thanks for all of this. It is nice,” Aaron said as he kissed Robert in thanks. 

“Daddy, Daddy, I helped,” Seb said as he ran up to Aaron. 

“You did, little man Thats, so I’m Im sure dad couldn’t have done it without you,” Aaron said as he crouched down to Seb’s level and cuddled him close. He kissed Seb on his forehead. 

They all sat at the table and were enjoying their meal. He loved the food. His husband was an excellent cook. He enjoyed helping cut the food for his children and watching Annie and Jacob get the chocolate all over their faces. 

When they were done eating, Seb got down from his chair, ran to Aaron, and climbed on his lap. 

“Daddy, Daddy, I made something for you!” Seb exclaimed excitedly as he was sitting on Aaron’s lap. 

“Oh, you did, mate? I cant wait to see it,” Aaron said and tickled Seb lightly. 

Seb ran to where he placed the card and gave it to Aaron. In the card, Robert wrote a message that said ‘Happy birthday Daddy, and I love you loads and loads.’ with Seb’’s name signed by him. 

Aaron had a tear in his eye and was speechless. “Thanks, mate. This is amazing, the best birthday gift Ive ever gotten,” Aaron cried as he hugged Seb close to him and kissed his head. 

Robert next gave him the gift from Annie and Jacob. It was a picture frame with their handprints painted on it and a picture of their family of 6. Aaron went to Annie and kissed her and hugged her close, not caring that he was getting chocolate all over himself and after he did the same with Jacob. 

After he got the gifts from his mothers, Robert stood there proudly with his hands behind his back. Aaron walked over to Robert and held him close. Robert told Aaron to close his eyes and put his hands out. Aaron did as he was told and felt an envelope being placed in his hands. Robert said that he could open his eyes, and he did. 

He saw an envelope and opened it. It was two plane tickets and a week at a resort on a beach. The flight leaves tonight. 

“Mum and Chas and Diane will take care of the children while we are away. Everything is taken care of at work. So all that we need to do is leave tonight and spend a week with you and me in the sun, just enjoying you being thirty.” Robert said as he hugged Aaron close and kissed him. 

After the presents, the cake was brought out it had the number thirty on it. Sarah made it as Sarah very professionally, did it? Everyone told Aaron to blow out the candles, and he did just that. He was so happy that he only wished that things would continue to be this good with his family, husband, and children. Something he never thought he could have when he was younger, and now at thirty, he had everything he never knew he could have. 

The cake was delicious, and Aaron enjoyed every bite. He also loved seeing the enjoyment on their children’s faces as they enjoyed grama’s cake. 

After everyone put everything away, he enjoyed spending some time on the sofa with his husband and children before they would go. He was excited to spend the week on the beach with his husband, but he would also miss his children dearly. Before it was time to go, Aaron cuddled all three of their children closely and told them to be suitable for their grandmothers. 

After a flight, they were finally at their destination, and it was daytime where they were. The resort floored Aaron. It had all the top amenities they would need for a relaxing week. Aaron was excited to spend some time in the pool, and at the beach, with his husband. It was nice to have time just the two of them. 

When they got to the beach, Aaron lay on his husband’s chest as the two of them enjoyed the sun and each other’s company.

“Thanks for this its nice being here and having time for just us.”

“I love our kids, but sometimes it being just us two is perfect. We needed just our time, and what better way for me to show you how much I appreciate you then to spoil you on your thirtieth birthday,” Robert said and peppered kisses all around Aaron’s face until he kissed his mouth. 

The two of them enjoyed each other’s company and were in their little bubble. But, Aaron had to admit that thirty wasn’t bad. He had his sister in his life, his three beautiful children he loved, and his husband who would do anything for him and he would do anything for as well. Life could not get better for Aaron.
