Savannah Reed
Savannah Reed had been incredibly independent from a young age. She grew up with distant workaholics for parents, an older brother who was in high school by the time she was seven and a nanny who cared more for her paycheque than her wellbeing. From an outsider’s perspective, anyone would see a child shouldn’t have to take care of themselves, though Savannah never saw it any differently. Having responsibilities was something she’d grown up learning, she thought every kid had to take care of themselves. She didn’t realize her home life was different until she was in elementary school. She asked her nanny, why the other’s kids mothers or fathers would prepare their lunches. The nanny lead her to believe that she would be a better adult if she carried these responsibilities at a younger age. As a kid, Savannah, of course, didn’t mind hearing that she would do better. Growing up with that mentality, she was a brat to be around as a kid. She enjoyed being responsible, but sometimes it wasn't fun, thankfully her brother would always help her if she asked him, though she always felt a little shameful needing to ask for help.
As a kid basically living on her own, she didn’t know her parent’s sour money situation. Why would she, she was just a kid. They fought so hard, to keep everything afloat, when they lost everything to the bank, they couldn’t deal with the shame. Their biggest mistake was not asking for help. A characteristic she also grew up learning. Savannah was twelve years old when her parents dropped her off at ‘an aunt’s house’ in the middle of the day. It was confusing and obviously after a ton of questions, she learned that this woman, wasn’t her aunt. She had a house full of teenagers of different ages and races with zero relation to her family. The confused and scared twelve-year-old called her brother. He was quick to come to get her from his university which was three hours away. It wasn't until Wesley picked her up did she learn her parents dropped her off at a foster home.
Savannah liked with her older brother and his fraternity for an entire semester. It was like living with ten older brothers instead of just two, despite Savannah never having a good relationship with her brother Kieran. The girl attended an elementary school near by, and after summer vacation, Savannah and Wesley moved into an apartment that was close to campus and her school. She lived with her brother for almost almost 6 years. He was an incredible brother, doing everything a parent should do while having a full course load and baseball practice. Savannah always wondered how he ever did it. The day her brother landed in the hospital, answered her questions. She realized, just like herself and their parents. He was also not one to ask for help. From that day on, she knew she needed to help. The day she turned sixteen she worked a retail job with hopes to help her brother pay their rent. When she graduated high school, her brother had been working for a year and the two of them moved into a homier apartment further away from his old university campus.
Since starting her own job, and gaining a knowledge on money, something she always valued and saved for was closed. She was obsessed with fashion, would always create collages of outfits she'd curate for her favourite celebrities. She started her personal shopping business in high school with a couple friends. It involved going to the mall and choosing what her friends would wear. Then morphed into posting the curated outfits online, her own outfits online, she eventually gained a following, and then requests for people to style something for them. Now, she has her own company, where she and a couple other personal shoppers who take on clients either on a one time or re-occuring basis.
Savannah is open to all writing partners.

Your LPS customs are soooo amazing!! Like genuinely so inspiring 😭 I wanna get into it but I have no idea how!!
Thank you so much!!! that really means a lot! And I'm really honored to hear I've been inspiring people with my work<3 I can provide some tips on starting the hobby if that helps! this'll be based on my own experience though of course! I can firstly say that getting into LPS customizing was pretty simple for me, because I already had most of the supplies I use for other projects, and it was only a matter of getting the bases themselves to paint on. Of course I have the LPS I grew up with but I didn't want to ruin those lol. I use those blank bootleg LPS bases they sell on amazon. You can also use authentic LPS but I'd recommend making sure you're not painting over a rare one like a big 5 or Savannah Reed first lol. A good starting point is to draft out the design you want on paper/digitally to see what kind of custom you want to make. for me I use digital templates and paint over them in my art program. Templesta on DeviantArt has some really good ones! For paint I use acrylic. Get a teeny tiny paintbrush for detail work along with a couple other sizes as well and those should be all the basic supplies you need to start! You can also get more complex with it and use chalk pastels, water color pencils and glitters too. Get creative! see what supplies you can use to take your customs to the next level. As a tip, make sure to water down your paint and do multiple thin layers. Patience is key because that paint is not gonna want to stick to the base at first. A lot of the actual painting process does come down to practice and a steady hand.
If you want to seal your customs which isn't necessary but gives them a nice finish, I recommend Liquitex high gloss varnish to seal the eyes. There are some good matte varnish sprays out there but I recommend doing your own research on those, as they can be resin based and therefore need a bit of caution and prep to handle. I personally use Mister Super Clear matte spray to seal the base of the custom, and I always spray outside with gloves and a respirator.
And though I have done sculpting I don't consider myself well versed enough to recommend supplies for clay but I've heard Green Stuff and Apoxie sculpt are good clays to use, but be sure to do your own research on those as well.
The monster high doll customization community is a good place to look for material research! A lot of the process of the face-up is pretty similar to painting LPS. That's actually what got me into customizing in the first place; I just watched a bunch of Dollightful, Enchanterium, and Moonlight Jewel's videos and said to myself "Wait a minute, I could do this with LPS!" I also of course recommend watching other LPS customizer's videos to see the process of how they make their customs, and show them some support as well! Pumpkinscustoms Is a really big inspiration for me and HelloStudios, Mr. Crazy Ray and LPSCobalt have really good videos on making customs.
And once again, if you don't wanna dive right in you can just draw them, whether using a template or not to see if you like the process and the design! You can even make a bunch of designs digitally and once you feel ready to tackle a real custom, start there! ahaha I didn't know I'd be writing a whole-ass Essay but I hope all this helps!! Thank you for enjoying my work!

purb please tell us about wetlands
*cracks knuckles* okay so this is a long post and image-heavy. Buckle Up.
Why are Wetlands so Cool?
WETLANDS ARE THE MOST BIOLOGICALLY DIVERSE ECOSYSTEMS IN THE WORLD.
Tumblr media
[Image: A flat grassy area filled with pools of water. This is a bog.]
That means they have a higher number of different species of plants and animals than any other kind of ecosystem in the world. Whoa.
Wait, I hear you say, what about rainforests and coral reefs?
HA, WELL THEY’RE WETLANDS TOO! Sort of, anyway, in the case of the reefs. (Actual Underwater Environments aren’t wetlands, but they’re often linked to them!) I’ll explain in a bit.
In addition to being so incredibly important, they’re also the ecosystem that’s the MOST THREATENED out of all the kinds in the world. Oops.
Right, let’s move into what wetlands actually are.
The Four Wet Horsemen of the Dampocalypse
BOGS, FENS, SWAMPS AND MARSHES
You can sort of divide the 4 main wetland into 2 categories: Mires and Not-Mires.
Tumblr media
[Image: A mountainous landscape. At the front there is a flat expanse of land covered in pools and waterways, which is a mire of some sort.]
MIRES are areas of wetland that are generally ‘peat producing’, so the main two kinds of mire are BOGS and FENS. A QUAGMIRE is a mire that is considered to be ‘floating’.
The other kinds of wetlans are SWAMPS and MARSHES, and sometimes they are mires, but these may only produce a very small amount of peat. So they may not be called mires sometimes. Confusing? Yes.
Bog vs Fen: What’s the Difference?
It’s about where this wetland is, and consequently where it gets its water from.
Tumblr media
[Image: A flat land with a bog pool at the centre. It reflects the sky above.]
BOGS are ‘ombotrophic’, which basically means that they get their water from the RAIN. They don’t get all that much stuff from the rain so they tend to lack in stuff like minerals, and are Always Acidic.
Tumblr media
[Image: A snow-covered ground with a few twiggy-looking plants and some spindly trees growing out of it.]
MUSKEGS are a kind of bog that exist in northern areas like boreal forests, and as such are COLD.
Tumblr media
[Image: An area that looks a lot like a standard field. This is, however, a fen.]
FENS are found on slopes and dips and stuff, and are ‘minerotrophic’, and that means that they get their water from the SOIL or BELOW GROUND. They can vary wildly in how many nutrients they might contain, and their pH (acid v alkaline levels) may also be unpredictable.
The problem with like, all this classification stuff is that if you start looking into too much detail you realise wack stuff, like, fens are actually a kind of bog, that parts of marshes can turn into bogs, and fens can turn into carrs (which are sort of part swamp, part Just A Forest).
Tumblr media
[Image: A large pool of water surrounded by trees, this is a carr.]
I guess you could say that everything is… Fluid.
Swamp vs Marsh: What’s the Difference?
SWAMPS are FORESTED WETLANDS. That’s it.
Tumblr media
[Image: A pool of water at the forefront of the image is bordered by smaller trees and shrubbery to all sides. There are large trees in the background and most of the water is covered with a layer of some sort of plant.]
There are two primary types of swamp - True Swamps (with Trees) and Shrub Swamps (with Shrubs). Shrub swamps aren’t marshes because they’re too dry. But they’re still wetlands. I know.
MARSHES tend to be TRANSITIONAL AREAS between wetland-on-the-land and wetland-that’s-wet-because-it’s-genuinely-underwater, like rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. They have a lot of plants, generally, but no trees. Lotsa stuff like reeds and rushes.
Tumblr media
[Image: A marsh of reeds stands at either side of a river. There is a forest in the background and a building overlooking from a hill.]
You get different types of marsh depending on what kind of water they’re bordering. My favourite happens to be salt marshes, because A) that’s where stuff like samphire grows and I love that salty bastard, and B) it’s by The Ocean and I love that salty bastard too.
Aside From the Horsemen…
There are other kinds of wetland, too!
Ya got stuff like MANGROVE FORESTS!
Tumblr media
[Image: A mangrove tree during low tide. The mangrove’s tall snorkel-like roots are visible rising all around like spikes.]
These fill the same sort of area as salt marshes, but they tend to happen in more tropical regions! (Where salt marshes are more temperate.) They’re also technically a kind of swamp!
Mangroves are great, they’re really well-adapted for living where they live, and they’re a fascinating habitat that facilitates a whole bunch of biodiversity. A lot of fish that spend their adult lives on reefs grow up in mangrove forests! Especially stuff like sharks - they’re too baby to live on the reefs without being eaten, and the mangrove forest with all of its roots and stuff offers a great place to hide from the Large Predators they may be faced with!
So in order to have Healthy Reefs, you also need Healthy Mangroves!
POCOSINS are fun wetlands generally dominated by ‘pond pine’ trees! They can be SHORT or TALL pocosins depending on the nutrient-richness of the peat soil they have, which then defines the height of the trees that grow on it!
Tumblr media
[Image: There is a stretching expanse of pond pine trees under a blue sky.]
The best part of pocosins is that they’re PYROPHYTIC which basically means they’re a FIRE-RELIANT ECOSYTEM which is FUCKING BADASS. There are regular fires and the pond pine seeds laying around in the soils are all like HELLA let’s GERMINATE. It means that there aren’t all that many low-lying shrubs around, and where the pond pines get a little thinned it’s technically a flooded savannah!
RIVER DELTAS! Deltas are where the mouths of rivers have like, left big sediment deposits and the mouth sort of fans out over a wide region to form, well, a wetland! These can be going into lakes or seas, or the ocean.
Tumblr media
[Image: As a river has approache the sea, its mouth has split into numerous branches in amongst chunks of brown, yellow and red sediments.]
Then there’s FLOODPLAINS, which are non-permanent wetlands. Basically, these areas are near rivers, and if the rivers burst their banks, the floodplains become covered in water. The river will leave behind a lot of stuff, like silt, so these areas can be quite fertile & fairly flat, and therefore highly desirable as farmland.
Tumblr media
[Image: A black and white aerial picture of a river, showing older meander trails and a general outline of where floods would reach if it burst its bank.]
You can get some ecosystems dependent on predictable flooding, like Tugay forests that release their seeds & stuff post-flood to make use of the newly-deposited nutrient load, and they aren’t strictly wetlands themselves.
RIVER BASINS can be wetlands! You know what that means? The AMAZON BASIN is a wetland. That’s right, that place with the big ol’ river and the world-famous rainforest and all the stuff that’s down there. That’s a wetland. The river flods in places regularly, and as we’ve just discussed, That There’s A Floodplain.
Tumblr media
[Image: And aerial photo of one of the Amazon River’s meanders.]
Other notable wetland areas include:
The SUNDARBANS, a bunch of mangrove forests in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta, the largest delta in the world!
Tumblr media
[Image: A satellite picture of an enormous delta. There is a big dark patch in the centre of the image, across the chunk of land, and this is the range that the Sundarbans cover.]
The PANTANAL, the world’s largest wetland area in South America.
Tumblr media
[Image: A bunch of interconnected pools of water dotted with trees around the edges are glimmering in sunlight.]
The WEST SIBERIAN PLAIN, which is a massive region of lowland, full of marshes and swamps and floodplains.
Tumblr media
[Image: A wide expanse of forested plains stretches across the picture. There is a river cutting through it.]
Let’s not forget that there are ARTIFICIAL WETLANDS that humans have made! These can include stuff like RICE PADDIES and NATURE RESERVES, but most of the time they tend to be used as a way to help purify water after it comes out of industrial use (like water used for sewage).
Tumblr media
[Image: There is a field of reeds in front of a row of red-brick houses.]
There are more kinds of wetland, like MUDFLATS! AKA TIDAL FLATS! Basically there’s mud around the coast, and it’s in big flat areas, and the sea covers it up and reveals it as the tide goes in and out. They’re goopy.
Tumblr media
[Image: An expanse of exposed mud along a coastline. There are seagulls near the forefront making use of the mud to look for food.]
So…. taking all of that into consideration…
How does the Knowledge of Wetlands help you Write Stories?
Let me tell you a short story of my own:
While you were busy worrying about quicksand, I was learning the best way to traumatise myself, ie, watching The Neverending Story on repeat.
Quicksand schmicksand, what y’all really have to worry about is BOGS eating HORSES (F for Artax).
Look,,, if you’re reading a story and they talk about a wetland, 99/100 times it’s going to be about T h e   B o g. Oh yes, say the locals, the Bog has… Killed. .. .. .
They’re somehow always like 10m deep, and Renowned for Eating People, and they go into detail about how they suck you in slowly. So you suffocate and drown. Fun! (BIG F FOR ARTAX, I KNOW HE CAME BACK TO LIFE AT THE END BUT HOLY SHIT)
It’s all about those 2 special words….
SPHAGNUM MOSS
Tumblr media
[Image: A close-up of a type of sphagnum moss. It’s pale green and looks damp.]
Someone mentions sphagnum moss and you’re like.. Hooo… Is it green and glistening? yes it is? oh boy here it comes. .. . The Bog Sucking…. (No there isn’t a better way to say it.) And someone always inevitably gets stuck & has to be pulled out with great drama, and they lose their shoes.
I can attest to the shoe-stealing nature of The Ubiquitous Bog, having been in one myself… I don’t know WHY that walking through The Welly Monster (as this bog was named) was a necessary part of a school trip I was on one year, but it was. I didn’t lose my wellies, because I tried to stick to the less sticky outer edges of it and my wellies were NEW, damnit, but others in my class were not so lucky….
ANYWAY my point is: bogs are cool to write about but they seem to be the ONLY wetland people ever really talk about that much.
Spice up your writing by putting in a setting that’s Weird and Funky, like a motherfucking pocosin.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

RK900xGavin Reed!
This is my first 900Reed fic, Suggestions always welcome and please let me know if you want more. Im going to make more anyway but I need validation lol
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
He falls down onto his seat too quickly. Gavin was happy to finally be back in the office, for once. The last few cases had really been cracking down on him. He’d ask Hank for help, only, he wouldn’t. So, he stretches his aching back, and takes a satisfying sip of coffee. First sip in a long while, well more like 3 hours but for Gavin that was more than enough time since his last coffee break. He’s about to kick his feet up onto his desk and rest, when he hears Hank call his name.”Tsk” he swerves around to see why he was being bothered.
“Fowler called us up for one of his little “talks”, let’s get going ey smartass?”
Hank grins.
Gavin gets flustered and annoyed by the old man’s antics, “Yeah right behind you hardass.” he says with a grunt. First the cases, now he has to get yelled at by Fowler for the next 45 minutes, can’t a man just drink his coffee in peace. He approaches Fowlers office door, when two androids catches his eye. They both just stand silently, with their hands behind their backs. “Oh great,'' he thinks, “two more tool bags for the office.” He rolls his eyes and does his best not to make eye contact with the bots as he walks inside. He stands next to Hank, who looks just as tired as he does. Fowler had his back turned to them, as he always does when he’s about to dish it out. “Boys,” He says Firmly. “I know there’s been a few….. Complications around these days.”
Hank scoffs, “More than a few.”
Fowler begins to turn around, “And things aren’t always easy around here, so our pals from cyberlife decided to help us out.”
“Get on with it” Gavin says impatiently.
“If you would stop showing so much fucking disrepect, maybe I would.” He smiles sarcastically. ”Boys, Meet your new partners rk800, and rk900.” Hank and Gavin both give off similarly angry expressions, and begin to spout their protests.
“There’s no way-”
“If you think I-”
“Do this to-”
“I don’t need a-”
“If both of you would please SHUT THE FUCK UP, I’ll explain,” Fowler rolls back his shoulders and sighs. “Both of you have been serious pains in my ass. Hank,” He looks towards him, “You hardly show up on time, if ever.” He directs his gaze towards Gavin. “Gavin, you don’t get along well with others and cause accidents around here all the damn time.” The two interject once more.
“Jeffrey you know-”
“But I just-”
“Shut it” Fowler says sternly. “So both of you are going to help test out these prototype androids investigators, come meet your respective partners.” He gestures for the robots to come forward with his hand. They both step forward, completely in sync.
“Hank you’ve already met yours, Gavin, get along.” Gavin stares dumbfoundead at the piece of plastic behind him, He looks just like the other one, only a few inches taller and had these piercing gray eyes.
“Fowler if you think I am-”
“I have worked too hard to-”
“I SAID SHUT IT” Fowler roars out. “This is not-negotiable, you can either shut the fuck up and go do your job, or you can hand your badge in and walk out of this office right now.” Gavin and Hank share a mutual look of frustration, he lets out a sigh of submission. Fuck, he really was going to have to deal with an android being at his side from now on.
Gavin grumpily returns to his seat, and his unfortunate “partner” stands behind him, perfect posture as always. “Detective-”, “Shut it.” Gavin doesn't even want to hear, let alone speak to the pathetic creature behind him. The robot, however, does not get the hint. “Really, I think we should-,” “Hey,” Gavin interrupts him. He stands up from his chair and grabs rk900 by the top of his jacket, menacingly growling at him. “I didn’t work my ass off FOR 12 FUCKING YEARS, so I could get a oversized paperweight that was made yesterday to tell me how to do my fucking job.”
Gavin pushes 900 away with disgust. “So how about, you stay at your end of the office and ill stay on mine.” The Android doesn’t say anything, it just stands and stares, willingly taking whatever action Gavin chooses against him. His stoic face makes it seem as if nothing had happened at all, that pisses Gavin off even more. Gavin Flips 900 off with a scowl, turns around and sits down once more in his chair.
“Where is my end, Detective?”
Gavin scoffs “Over by the coffee machine, actually, shouldn't you be doing that right now? I could use a drink.” Gavin snickers mockingly.
“Very Well, Detective. I’ll go accomplish that right now.” 900 Says before walking off.
“Stupid fucking androids,” he mumbles to himself. “Dumb bucket of bolts cant even think for itself, let alone an entire investigation, what the fuck is going on here?” He sighs, and ruffles through the set of files in front of him. “No, no, no, ah-bingo!” He says as he pulls out a file. “Charlotte,” Said the tab on the file. He opens it and spreads out the different information kept inside. Articles, Journal Notes, Excerpts from a diary, DNA samples, all of this and still not one step closer to figuring out who's responsible for this case. He scratches his head in frustration. “Okay Okay, when you can't find anything new, it's better to review” He chimes to himself. It was a secret chant that Hank had taught him to help when he gets stuck in situations exactly like this one.
Gavin reassures himself and begins to review the information he had laid out so far.
Charlotte Campbell
           - 10 Years old
           - Blue eyes and auburn hair
           - Went missing the 15th of September
           - Last seen by the Maid at 4:30 PM on the day in question.
     - William Campbell
           - Father of Charlotte Campbell
           - Husband of Savannah Campbell
           - Occupation: Android Mechanic Liability Lawyer
           - Came Home from work at 5:30 PM on the day in question
     - Savannah Campbell
           - Mother of Charlotte Campbell
           - Wife of William Campbell
           - Occupation: Fashion Designer
           - Was occupied with work until Husband called to inform her daughter as missing.
Charlotte woke up at 9 AM, was alone with her mother (as her father had already left for work), until she left at at 10 AM. The android nanny then proceeded to continue Charlotte’s course lessons. She was homeschooled. Charlotte was up in the attic playing with the nanny, when a reported masked thief broke in through the window next to the backdoor of the house. The nanny, occupied with Charlotte farther away, had not yet detected this. But the Android maid had, it went to confront the intruder when it got repeatedly stabbed in the shoulders and chest, and collapsed on the ground, the last recorded timestamp being 08:15:2038-04:42:003. The nanny and Charlotte are presumed to have been taken, and have not been sighted since.
Those were the basics, he knew them all too well. He went over them countless times to see if he missed anything, any minuet details he may have glazed over. And here he was again checking for the same damn thing. “Think Gavin, Think!” He hits himself on the head. “There has to be something I’m missing, a piece I don’t have.” He looks over the file once more and his eyes trail to the pictures of the maid’s body, he focuses in on it, trying to make sure everything in the environment made sense.
“Detective”
He jolts up in his seat and quickly turns around to see the same smug ass android, but this time holding a coffee. “Ha!” Gavin smirks, “looks like your good for something after all.” He proudly takes the coffee from 900’s hands and places it on his desk. He quickly returns to analyzing the evidence and acting as if 900 wasn't there in the first place. “Physical Files Detective? Wouldn’t it be easier to use the interface?” Gavin lets out a huff of air. “Easier for dickheads like you maybe” he slaps his folder with his hand to emphasize its importance. “Me? I like a hard copy” he smiles arrogantly.
“Now why don’t you go back to your place, and start making coffee for the others. In fact, I think I might enjoy mine right now.” He snickered as he reaches for the coffee cup. He puts his lips to the opening and immediately starts gagging. He spits out hot coffee all over the evidence in front of him, watching it stain completely. He reaches for his throat. He feels it burning, as if there were holes evaporating his skin. “Some water, Detective?”
Gavin turns around once more to see 900 facing him, wearing almost what looks like a smile. Holding out a bottle of water in his hand. Gavin would love to yell and curse the fucker out, but he could barely feel his mouth, and that water was looking mighty wet. He angrily reaches out for the bottle but 900 slips it away before he can grab it. Gavin stands up looking like he’s ready to blow up, and is about to make a fist but before he could swing 900 simply pushes him back down on his chair.
“Now now Detective, don’t strain yourself.” 900 shakes the water bottle in front of Gavin’s face. “I suppose it’s clear by now that my place, isn’t near the coffee machine, is it?”
Gavin cant respond he just glares painfully at 900. 900 places down the water bottle behind Gavin, and onto his desk. “No, It isn’t Detective. You see my place, is to serve as an investigative assistant in this precinct, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.” Gavin wants so badly to punch this fucker in the face. He wants so badly to pin him to the ground and give him a few good swings. But he feels his hands reaching desperately for the water instead of the feeling of revenge. He opens the cap and quickly chugs it down, feeling the relief of cool water go down his esophagus. He lets out a hefty sigh when he’s done and stares daggers into 900 as he wipes the coffee from his mouth.
“Are we at an understanding here Detective?”

(The cover art/design was done by the amazing Savannah Jezowski with Dragonpen Designs.)
  Book Blurb:
Echo enjoys the peace and solitude of the Faeorn forest, regardless of how strange spending time in the “haunted” wood seems to others.
But on the cusp of her thirteenth birthday, the discovery of a family secret reveals why Echo has never been drawn to the sea like her mother. This discovery shakes the foundations of her world and sends Echo on a quest, not merely into the forest, but into the heart of the fae-lands themselves, to rescue the sister she didn’t know existed.
Elves, dragons, and fairy courts will put Echo’s wit and resolve to the test. But with time running out for her sister, will Echo even be able to save herself?
A fairytale adventure perfect for fans of The Secret of Roan Innish and The Girl Who Drank the Moon.

    Author Bio:
Jenelle first fell in love with stories through her father’s voice reading books aloud each night. A relentless opener-of-doors in hopes of someday finding a passage to Narnia, it was only natural that she soon began making up fantastical realms of her own. Jenelle currently resides in the wintry tundra of Wisconsin—which she maintains is almost as good as Narnia—with her knight-in-shining armor and their four adorable hobbits. When she is not writing, she homeschools said hobbits and helps them along on their daily adventures… which she says makes her a wizard.

Excerpts (if you choose to share an excerpt, please choose just one to share, thank you!):
My earliest memory returns often in my dreams. My mother’s soft smile caresses me as she bends down to kiss my forehead, my own tiny hand reaching up and trying to capture a lock of her long red-gold hair between clumsy fingers that refuse to obey my wish. A soft, sweet humming fills the memory, a tune that is both dear and yet unfamiliar. Eyes filled with love gaze down at me, and a gentle laugh, a man’s laugh, fills the room. Strong arms encircle us both, my mother and me, and I know I am perfectly safe. Perfectly loved.
Another sound permeates the memory: a rhythmic, rushing, liquid sound I do not recognize, but which fills me with a deep longing that threatens to burst out of my chest and leave me completely hollow. In the dream, it is merely a subtle noise in the background, but when I wake I feel a desperate need to find its source. Sometimes the longing clutches me so tightly that it leaves me gasping, desperately sucking in each breath as if through a narrow reed, my lungs screaming as though they have forgotten how to breathe the very air I need to survive.
It is rare to have a memory from such a tender age, especially one so vivid. And yet, that moment is locked in my thoughts with perfect clarity. During the day it grows distant and faded, but it has haunted my sleep in full, vibrant detail each night for nearly thirteen years.
So why is it that the face in my dreams is wholly unfamiliar to me? Why is the mother from my memory a stranger?
***
Echo sat on a salt-smoothed boulder, her knees pulled up to her chin, watching the other village children playing along the beach. Some of them traversed the shore collecting shells in wicker baskets. The braver ones waded out into the water, splashing and swimming in the gently rolling waves. A shudder coursed through her. Even if it were not early spring and the waters were warmer, nothing would induce her to go any closer to that surging surf and those unfathomable depths. Who knew what untold terrors the placidly sparkling surface concealed?
A cluster of girls stood in the wet sand where the waves lapped about their ankles, baskets swinging from their arms, the foaming water swirling at their feet. She imagined ghostly, watery hands reaching out to capture them, pulling them beneath the surface, deeper and deeper until all memory of light and warmth was long forgotten.
***
She lay still, listening. All was quiet in the house below. Or was it? A voice filtered through the hammering rain—Dadai’s deep rumble, and then Mamai’s treble answered, though Echo could not make out the words. Another rumble of thunder, and beneath its rolling bass, she could just pick out the higher-pitched creak of the front door opening.
Quietly, so as not to alert her parents, Echo crept out of her bed, dragging her quilt with her, and tiptoed to her window that looked out over the front of the house. Before the open front door, she could make out a faint rectangle of light on the ground below. Gusts of wind buffeted the cozy house, and she squinted into the pelting rain to see who might be going out. Then the hinges creaked again and the light disappeared, plunging the outdoors into darkness once more.
Through the driving rain, a hint of movement drew her attention to a shadowy figure crossing the yard. Echo strained her eyes, but she could not make it out. Then, a flash of lightning, another, and another, lit the sky in quick succession. Echo caught her breath. Walking through the storm, hair long and flowing unbound around her in the tempest, her skirts fluttering in the wind, Mamai walked heedlessly into the rain toward the tip of the peninsula. Echo stared out the window, willing another lightning bolt to scatter the darkness. When it came, she saw her mother descending the rocky stairs that led to the beach. Her head soon disappeared below the cliffside, out of Echo’s view.
Her head spun as she leaned her elbows on the windowsill. Where had Mamai gone? Why could she possibly need to be out in such a storm? No houses lay that way, so it couldn’t be a sick neighbor. The docks were on the other side of the peninsula, and anyway, if there were a problem there, it would have been her father who attended to it. The mystery of it lay heavy on her thoughts as she awaited her mother’s return.
But she did not return.
Echo’s eyelids grew heavy. She struggled to keep them open, propping herself up in an uncomfortable position in an attempt to stay awake, but eventually she succumbed to the insistent embrace of sleep.
***
Do the fae read books? Echo wondered suddenly, and voiced the question before she had time to consider whether or not it might be rude.
“We don’t read about life; we live,” Malilia replied. “And we learn, not from reading, but from living.”
“That’s beautiful,” Echo said. “And yet… hollow.”
Malilia arched an eyebrow. “Hollow? What is in your books that is so wonderful?”
“Everything!” Echo enthused, warming to the topic. “Why, in books you can be anyone, go anywhere. There’s a freedom to reading unlike anything else. When you read, it makes you think differently about the world and your own life, and sometimes it helps you understand what’s going on around you by showing you a different perspective. And… well… there’s beauty to be discovered in books, more real and more true because it’s only limited by your own imagination. And besides, it’s…. it’s just… fun!”
Malilia grew thoughtful. “This is something you care about.”
“Yes.” Echo felt a little embarrassed. She did not usually speak so forcefully. “I like reading.”
“I can tell.” Malilia’s eyes twinkled with amusement.
***
“You dare steal from the King of the Winter Court?” The voice reverberated through the air, its sheer, palpable power pushing Echo to her knees. The lantern dropped from her nerveless hand and clattered on the ground.
Echo bowed her head respectfully, racking her memory for every snatch of folk-tale she had ever heard about the Winter Fae or the Dark Host. “Forgive me, my lord,” she whispered. “I did not intend to steal from you. I merely seek to save the life of my sister.”
She heard soft footfalls approach across the sable ground but she did not dare raise her eyes, not even when she felt the touch of hot breath on the back of her head.
“You smell of truth.” The voice sounded puzzled. “Rise, seeker.”
Echo stood, wincing at the pain in her feet. But that thought fled with the rest as she came face to face with the largest tiger she had ever seen.
Upon reflection, it was the only tiger she had ever seen. But she was reasonably certain that, should she ever see another, it would be quite different from the monstrous beast that confronted her now.
Her eyes were even with his shoulders, and he stared down at her from his impressive height, his long whiskers twitching inches above her face. His fur was utterly black, the color of coal. Instead of stripes, Ritioghra’s—for it could only be Ritioghra—body was covered in swirls and whorls of gleaming blue, the same color as the Everflame. His eyes gleamed like two massive stars of an identical shade, and he gazed down at her with an expression of ferocious curiosity. He was utterly terrifying and utterly beautiful.
Terror coursed through her veins like ice, but the light of intelligence in his eyes gave her courage. “For-forgive me, my lord.” Echo gave a wobbly curtsy.
The tiger stretched with a lazy nonchalance. Every line of his long body rippled with power and strength, like the unstoppable force of a river about to burst its banks.

Special Protection Area (SPA) Castro Verde in Baixo Alentejo, Portugal - May 2012 by SaffyH The Castro Verde is an absolutely magical area. The rolling Steppe habitat comes to life in Spring and a whole range of colours can be seen. The landscapes are open and rolling, making the sky look big and wide. The region does not receive many visitors and are very tranquil. In spring the land comes to life with the sound of Blackbirds, Calandra Larks, Quail too name but a few. I was lucky to see Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Lesser-Short-toed Lark, Thekla Lark, Nightingale, Melodious Warbler were just some of the birds I added to my list in this region. I also saw an Iberian Hare. It is a great place to relax in. algarvebirdman.com/ 1. Special Protection Area (SPA) Castro Verde This vast area (790 square kms) of rolling steppe land is a complete contrast to the Algarve and highly recommended for a day trip, being only around an hour’s drive north. Comprising the largest expanses of the steppic grassland plains in Portugal that form a mosaic with wide savannah-like open Holm Oak montado woodlands. Throughout the year the whole area is absolutely enchanting, both for its birds and the outstanding scenery that never fails to induce a vow to return. This seemingly never-ending wilderness is lush and liberally coated with wildflowers in the winter and spring, while in the summer and autumn the area becomes extremely arid and often desert-like. The SPA Castro Verde is one of the most important areas in Europe for sought after species like Lesser Kestrel, Great and Little Bustards and Black-bellied Sandgrouse. The area also supports a great diversity and high density of raptors, which includes nearly all of Portugal’s breeding species. What to see when, around Castro Verde During spring and early summer the best grasslands resound with the impressionable sound of Calandra Larks and the incredibly abundant Corn Buntings, while Montagu’s Harriers, Lesser Kestrels and Black Kites arrive to breed in quantity and become common birds in these pristine habitats. Great and Little Bustards display in early spring the latter being at its easiest to see at this time of year. Short-toed, Booted and Bonelli’s Eagles all breed in the general area and use the grasslands as regular hunting grounds. Other species that breed in this region include Stone-curlew, Great Spotted Cuckoo, European Roller, European Bee-eater, Pallid Swift, Woodlark, Short-toed, Crested and Thekla Larks, Tawny Pipit, Crag Martin, Black-eared Wheatear, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Cetti’s, Great Reed and Melodious Warblers, Woodchat and Southern Grey Shrikes, Golden Oriole and Spanish Sparrow as well as the omnipresent Azure-winged Magpies and Hoopoes. Both Collared Pratincole and Gull-billed Terns occur in the area regularly and sometimes breed, depending on the water levels at key sites. In an undisclosed area Spanish Imperial Eagles have recently set up territories and by employing great care and patience they can often be seen soaring over the area. Simon supplies all his observations to the team that is monitoring this exciting re-establishment. Eurasian Black and Eurasian Griffon Vultures use the area almost daily on their searches for carrion, involving birds of a non-breeding age and one cannot help but prophesise the eventual colonisation of the Eurasian Black Vulture in this admirably suitable area. Outside the breeding season the absence of the summer visitors is compensated by the arrival of an array of winter birds that join the many attractive resident species, including the omni-present bustards, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Calandra Larks and resident raptors. Red Kites occupy in considerable numbers and its not at all unusual to see over 30 individuals are in a day, Hen Harriers hunt over the grasslands in good numbers too while the occasional Peregrine or Merlin add further interest to the raptors. Eurasian Black and Eurasian Griffon Vultures are more regularly seen outside the breeding season, as are Spanish Imperial Eagles due to dispersal of younger birds from Spain. Golden Eagle is more wide ranging at this time of year too and 1st year birds are often recorded. Large numbers of wintering Lapwing and Golden Plover settle here and Skylarks and Meadow Pipits become truly abundant. Around 1000 Common Cranes occur, often feeding on fallen acorns in the open Holm Oak woodlands from late October to March (the highest count in the winter of 2007-8 revealed 1300 inds) This region is well worth visiting all the year round but during the incredibly hot July and August, when birding is often uncomfortable and the heat-haze can make for frustrating viewing, seriously early starts are recommended. On these days we can include a short afternoon visit to Castro Marim (see “Wetlands”). For the most enthusiastic, a 2-3 day tour is ideal and can be easily arranged together with attractive and economic accommodation in the area. This will give ample time for the more difficult species and permit a deeper appreciation of this superb area. Access in the SPA Castro Verde Important information (particularly relevant to the observation of Great Bustard): It is thanks to the Liga da Proteção da Natureza (LPN www.lpn.pt) for the continued existence of high quality steppic habitats in this region. In 1993 the LPN purchased 5 properties in this area (total: 1700ha.) at a time when the whole region was under imminent threat of becoming forested with non-native eucalyptus forest. This would have meant the loss of one of the most important areas of its kind in Europe. Not only did the LPN manage to prevent this from happening on land they purchased but also, through a successful lobby, actually caused a complete turn around within the government and achieved SPA status for the whole area in 1993. The LPN continue to work with the implementation of wide-ranging nature protection projects, notably a long-term program centred on the conservation of the pseudo-steppe habitats within the SPA; “ O Programa Castro Verde Sustentavel”. Unfortunately, excessive pressure from visiting birdwatchers in recent years has driven the LPN to prohibit free access onto their land (all entrances have large green gates labelled LPN and usually clear signs depicting a design with a Little Bustard’s head and a tractor). These gates should always be closed but as some local farmers tend to leave them open it encourages un-informed birders to just drive in. (Always close them if you see them open!). Due to the increasing numbers of visiting birdwatchers and the proximity of the tracks to Great Bustard leks some disturbance has been unavoidable. Sadly, a few people have even walked across managed habitats in the breeding season, usually in attempts to get closer photographs. Because of this, the LPN have desperately been trying to halt access onto their land - this has been difficult because of lenient Portuguese laws and also because local farmers need to have access to their land by thoroughfare. There has even been a recent case of attempted egg collecting (not birders), which was investigated by the local police and Interpol. Great Bustards will just not tolerate approach within at least 500 metres and if they are displaying any disturbance of this nature will cut down display time and consequently, reduce their breeding success. As the LPN is almost solely responsible for the dramatic increase in this, by far the largest Great Bustard population in Portugal, these recent trends have become a cause for concern and are counter-productive to their ongoing habitat management etc. Understandably, some birdwatchers just do not realise the consequences of pushing too close and making these creatures fly - just once a day in the breeding season can have a marked effect on their population. The great majority of birdwatchers don't mean to be selfish but in actual fact one cannot closely approach these birds without disturbance. If you should be lucky enough to encounter Great Bustards outside of the LPN land, please observe the following: Great Bustard observation code as practiced and encouraged by the LPN 1.Keep to an absolute minimum distance of 5-600 metres when at all possible. 2. Stay part of the car - ie; get out but don’t separate one-self visually. 3. Stay on tracks 4. Keep movements very gentle and be very quiet 5. Keep observations to less than around 20 mins 6. Drive away slowly In this way one can enjoy the Great Bustards without making them nervous LPN Castro Verde Environmental Education Centre: “Centro de Educação Ambiental de Vale Gonçalinho” Simon strongly suggests to anyone visiting the area for the first time to make a visit to this centre; it’s an ideal way to start the day being only some 10 mins drive north-east from Castro Verde. Tel: (00351) 286 328 309 (Usually closed on Sundays and Mondays). One can visit this centre freely from 9am - 5 pm. There are free walking trails here that are very good for Little Bustard, European Roller, Lesser Kestrel and Calandra Lark and to a lesser extent, Great Bustard and Black-bellied Sandgrouse. The charming staff speak excellent English and will give birdwatching advice for the whole region, including details of recent interesting sightings. Books and T-shirts etc. are available for purchase in the small shop, as well as a selection of free informative leaflets (donations welcome!). At the centre one can easily become a member of the non-profit making LPN and help them with their many conservation projects. Through advance booking, the LPN will take small groups (up to 6) to see the wildlife of the region including the Bustards etc. Note that as over the years Simon has led voluntary trips for members of the LPN and SPEA and regularly supplies data from the region, he has a special arrangement for entering some LPN land in the SPA Castro Verde. To reach the Centro de Educação Ambiental de Vale Gonçalinho: Take the Beja road (IP2) from Castro Verde - soon one will see an adjacent (the old road) road to the right. Get on this at the first opportunity at around 2.5 kms from Castro Verde. Continue in the Beja direction and after around another 2 kms a well-made track to the right is clearly signposted for the centre. Drive down here for approx 1 km (looking out for Calandra Larks and Little Bustards!) until you come to a long white building - you are at the centre. Some conservation dependent species of the SPA Castro Verde The Castro Verde region is the most important area in Portugal for a number of rare and endangered birds that depend totally or partially on extensive steppic habitats. The sustainability of these depends largely on man’s influence. The major threats are; intensification of agriculture through modern farming methods, the reduction of traditional grazing pastures and afforestation. Below is some general information and up to date facts and figures about the conservation of some of the most important species that are found in the Castro Verde region and its environs. Great Bustard According to an extensive and rigorous survey of the Great Bustard population in Portugal in 2005 this fabulous species recently suffered some small extinctions in a couple of areas but had increased overall. This increase is largely due to the existence of one large high-quality area – the SPA Castro Verde. Here the total number of 1,093 individuals counted in 2005 represents nearly 80% of the Portuguese total – a marked increase since the last major census in 2002 when 912 individuals were detected. Countrywide, the major threats to Great Bustard in Portugal were identified as; agricultural intensification, afforestation as well as collision with power lines, illegal hunting and road building. In the Castro Verde region, where the LPN works with local farmers to achieve environmentally sustainable agricultural practices and habitat management, the main cause for concern are power lines – 19 Great Bustards were found to have collided with them between October 2004 and September 2005. Undoubtedly the Castro Verde region is as good as anywhere in the world for observing this shy and vulnerable species although due to its extreme sensitivity, especially during the breeding season it is imperative that visiting birdwatchers respect access rules to private land and follow the observation code set out by the LPN (see above). Little Bustard The LIFE-nature funded project: “Project Tetrax – Conservation of Little Bustard in the Alentejo” included intensive surveys of both the breeding and wintering population. Also, and importantly, action plans with the co-operation of local farmers and central administration were developed. The breeding population census (2003-2005) showed that the SPA Castro Verde was by far the most important single area for this species, holding 3440 displaying males. Data collected also revealed densities as high as 9.8 males per 100 hectares, which is the highest recorded anywhere and further highlights the crucial importance the area has for grassland species in general. As this survey forms a baseline for future monitoring it is not yet possible to conclude an actual trend for the Little Bustard population in Portugal, although the initial results indicate a substantial increase in comparison to previous fieldwork. It is likely however, that the increased coverage and the high data quality collected during this project have largely clouded any reliable comparison with the past. As with many steppe-land species the main threats identified during Project Tetrax were agricultural intensification and afforestation. If these changes to land use are not halted it is believed, despite the present large population in Portugal that Little Bustard could be threatened with extinction in the short to medium term. Citation: Leitão, D; Jolivet, C; Rodriguez, M and Tavares, J., eds Bustard Conservation in Europe in the last 15 Years: current trends, best practices and future priorities. Birdlife International, 2006. Lesser Kestrel Due to drastic reductions in the breeding populations of this charming falcon the Lesser Kestrel is considered an endangered species. The LPN has been working closely with this species throughout Portugal since 1993 when the national population had hit a low of less than 150 pairs. Now, thanks to the efforts of the LPN there are over 450 breeding pairs in Portugal and are still increasing. Presently, the SPA Castro Verde holds over 70% of the country’s population. Between 2002 and 2006 the LPN launched a Life-nature project: “Re-establishment of the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanii) in Portugal”. Among the many actions taken by the LPN the provision of new nesting sites and the improvement of old ones have benefited this colonially nesting species. Meanwhile, ongoing deals with landowners that promote friendly farming practices have substantially increased the amount of insect prey so important to this migratory falcon. During the project’s 4 years the incredible figure of 2797 juveniles were ringed and preliminary understanding indicates that most of these return to their birthplace. Citation: Henriques, I & Alcazar, R. 2006. Um olhar sobre o Peneiriero-das-torres (Falco naumanii) do projecto LIFE-Natureza Peneiriero-das-torres – “Recuperação de Peneiriero-das-torres (Falco naumanii) em Portugal. LPN, Lisboa, Portugal. Black-bellied Sandgrouse This is another scarce species that is entirely restricted to large and undisturbed areas of steppe-type habitats. Again this bird’s stronghold in Portugal is the SPA Castro Verde, which holds more than half of the total national population. There are now believed to be more Black-bellied Sandgrouse than previously thought in Portugal, although the population is almost certainly less than 1000 individuals. It is an extremely difficult species to census – a recent study in the region of Morão in central-east Portugal revealed that over 300 individuals are now known to be resident. A reliable census of their situation in the whole of Portugal is awaited. The Black-bellied Sandgrouse is a notoriously elusive species that demands, maybe more than any other in the region, previous experience in order to be seen. The usual view is of small groups in flight that are flushed unknowingly by the observer, their atmospheric flight calls giving them away. Views on the ground, if at all, are nearly always at great distance as this bird will usually get up and fly on approach to within 1 km. only to settle even further away! Montagu’s Harrier The first Montagu’s Harriers return to the SPA Castro Verde to breed from as early as late February where they occupy most of this enormous area. From mid-March this easily seen raptor becomes quite literally abundant and due to its apparent lack of fear, delights observers as they quarter at low level over the grasslands and cereal crops of the region. In a single day it is not unusual to see 20 different individuals. Thanks to LPN’s efforts with the local farmers their habitat has improved in recent years and their nest sites protected from machinery during harvest time, which often coincides with the times that unfledged young are still in the nest. Interestingly, a pair of Marsh Harriers has been breeding in similar cereal-steppe habitats, which is quite normal in Eastern Europe but practically unheard of in the west where they are almost exclusively confined to reedbeds. European Roller Only around 100 pairs breed in Portugal, being much more scarce than many visitors imagine. The European Roller has suffered considerable declines over much of its range and once again, the decline of suitable habitat due to modern agricultural practices is the key factor. This much sought after species is a staggeringly colourful migrant and flight views never fail to leave an unforgettable impression on the observer. The SPA Castro Verde has the highest density of breeding pairs in the country, partly due to the placement of nest boxes and breeding walls for Lesser Kestrel by the LPN in suitable habitat and partly because of the ideal conditions that this area presents. It is a fairly late migrant, the first birds tending to arrive around the 1st week of April with occasional sightings considerably earlier. The European Roller, despite its colours is not always easy to see and is absent from many apparently suitable areas. A visit to a known breeding site is the most reliable method! Calandra Lark This, the largest of all larks is another specialist of the interior arid areas of Portugal where it is rather patchily distributed. The winter flocks can comprise of many 100’s of birds while in late winter these split up to occupy favoured sites. Even in the breeding season Calandra Lark is gregarious – breeding in loose colonies when it is normal to witness the memorable sight and sound of various birds in slow-motion song flight at their favoured spots. Their distinctive sounds are an integral part of the best habitats in the region and one will find that their presence coincides with other sought-after species of the region. Short-toed Larks, Tawny Pipits and Black-eared Wheatears often occupy the same areas as this species. Common Crane A large proportion of the European wintering population resides in central-western Iberia with most occupying favoured areas in the Spanish Extramadura. Portugal receives its portion though, confined mainly to central-eastern areas on the Spanish border and around Castro Verde. Well over 1000 Common Cranes winter in the SPA Castro Verde, arriving in numbers around late October and leaving by mid-March. Despite their numbers it is rather difficult to find them in their preferred feeding areas below the extensive Holm Oak montado woodlands, where they feed on fallen acorns. The best strategy for success is to stakeout one of their roosting sites, with care not to cause any interruptions that can cause considerable stress when incoming groups are settling. The sight and sound of wild Common Cranes assembling to roost must be one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles that nature has to offer. Black-shouldered Kite The stronghold in Europe for this enchanting raptor are the interior wooded plains of the western Spanish Extramadura and its natural continuation in Portugal’s Alentejo. In winter they can sometimes be seen hunting over the open plains of the Castro Verde region but this is not their breeding habitat. This is a bird of savannah-like Holm Oak montado-type woodland interspersed with cereal crops. This habitat forms a large part of the SPA Castro Verde and well-travelled visitors to the area in the dry season often comment on its uncanny resemblance to the African savannah. Although quite a common resident species it is becoming apparent that after the breeding season, many birds vacate the searing heat of mid-summer. It is then, that they often hunt in the periphery of wetlands and other cooler coastal areas of the Alentejo and especially, in the Lisbon region. By mid-autumn most of the local breeders are back in territory and are usually easily seen from then and to the end of the breeding season. https://flic.kr/p/c57QGQ

Charleston-Style Custom Home
Hello, my friends! I hope everything is great with you.
I am excited to share this new construction project. The homeowners chose their lot based on neighborhood and proximity to the lake. The lot was small with a very steep uphill slope and across the street from the lake. To maximize the views and challenging topography they went to Todd W. Reed of Reed Brothers design & build (previously featured here & here) for advice and a game plan. Reed Brothers design & build is well known in the area for taking the diamond in the rough on difficult lake lots and turning them into a well-polished finished product. Todd pitched the idea of a 3-story Charleston-style home with the main living areas being in the middle and bedrooms on top level. This allowed for all of the views to be over the rooftops of the homes that would have normally blocked the lake views. The lower level garage/foyer/stair/elevator area maintained the best access for entrance of the steep, uphill home site. The results turned out well  as you can see in the photos below.

Spread picks for all 86 Week 1 college football games
Tumblr media
There are a whopping 86 games on the weekend FBS docket. A few of them might even be good!
Below are picks and projections using the S&P+ projections, listed in full for all 130 FBS teams here. See the bottom of the post for more detail about these.
The spread (listed in parentheses) is shown next to S&P+’s pick for each game. The team in bold is projected to beat the spread. (At most books, there is no listed spread for FCS games.) When S&P+ predicts a tie or a push (a tie with Vegas, basically), I list the pick on the side S&P+ would pick if teams could score in decimals.
This document breaks games (and S&P+’s season performance to date) out into their decimal glory. This year, I am including and monitoring total (over/under) picks as well.

Each year, I post weekly S&P+ picks as a way of affirming the ratings’ validity. I use my S&P+ system as a complement to most of my analysis, and the picks are a way of showing it generally knows what it’s talking about.
S&P+ tends to hit between 50 (meh) and 54 percent (great) against the spread from year to year. It isn’t always the single best performer, but it holds its own.
And beyond picks, it goes deeper than any other set of college football analytics on the market. You can go into granular detail regarding team strengths and weaknesses in a way that no other set of ratings allows. (See the annual team statistical profiles, which will be unveiled for 2018 in a couple of weeks, as proof.)

The Best of Nairobi in One Week – A Travel Itinerary
This 7 Day Nairobi and Surrounding travel itinerary is designed keeping the following factors in mind:
Fly in and Fly Out from Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport
Hire a car or book a car and driver (Nairobi roads can be hazardous)
Have 8 days in your hand
Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya. It is a buzzing, hustling, vibrant, gritty and chaotic place. It sits in the Kenyan highlands on top of the Great Rift Valley. Populated by colonists in the 18th for its cooler climate, the rains and fertile highlands made it a prime spot for European settlers who suffered under the scorching African sun.
Nowadays Nairobi is no longer a sleepy village, it is the third-largest economy in Africa and the city is expanding at a huge rate. Everywhere you will see tower blocks emerging, restaurants and bars being opened, and swarms of tourists heading to world-famous sights. But Nairobi isn’t a city of ancient architecture and pristine plazas. Nairobi is famous for its animals. And it is the only city in the world with a National Park in the city bounds. Nairobi is also one of the destinations that is perfect for a family vacation as there are lots of things to do with kids in Nairobi, most of which are mentioned in this Nairobi Travel Guide as well.
Nairobi National Park is 100 sq km right in the city where wild animals are free to roam and to come and go as they please. 4 of the big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo) are in the park, elephants had to be relocated due to human-wildlife conflict. In Nairobi , animals aren’t just confined to the park, you see giraffes on the way to work, warthogs on the school playing fields and monkeys in your garden.
Animals and humans coexist in a way that is special and unique to this vibrant African city.

  Day 1 – Nairobi
Land at Jomo Kenyatta International airport, make your way to your accommodation in the leafy suburb of Karen. Karen is on the outskirts of Nairobi, close to the wildlife points and filled with many fabulous shops and restaurants.
Relax by the pool, take a walk in Ololua Forest and have dinner at the unbeatable Talisman restaurants. If it’s a Friday you’ll find locals dancing to the local DJ until the early hours of the morning. The best way to kick off your epic trip to Kenya and Nairobi.
Day 2 – David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Giraffe Manor
Start the Day 2 of your epic 7 day trip to Nairobi, by visiting the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. This charitable organisation rescues orphaned elephants from all over Kenya and Tanzania and rehabilitates them before returning them to the wild. Visit DSWT to meet the most adorable baby elephants, spend time getting to know them and meet their keepers and trust owners who will happily share information on the work that the trust does.
Stop for lunch at craft centre Utamaduni.
Visit the Giraffe Centre and Sanctuary. This charity rescues the endangered Rothschild Giraffe and provides them with a place of safety in the sanctuary. Visit the Giraffe Centre, meet the giraffe and feed them by hand. Get up close and personal to these gentle giants on raised platforms. Although these are wild giraffes they are used to visitors.
Day 3 – Safari at Nairobi National Park
The third day of this 7 day Nairobi Travel Itinerary is reserved for a full day safari at Nairobi National Park.
The park may be small but it packs a punch; lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, rhino, hippo, crocodiles, jackals and many more live in the park. As traditional corridors are open and animals are free to come and go, you have the opportunity to see most Kenyan wildlife here, except for elephants. There are various habitats across the park, from savannah to marsh, rivers and lakes to dense woodland. Stop for lunch at the KWS clubhouse and stay in the park for the full day.
Day 4 – Drive to Naivasha & visit Crescent Island
Naivasha is a thrilling 90-minute drive from Nairobi. The view as you drive down the Great Rift Valley is awe-inspiring; volcanoes rise from the bottom of the rift and eagles soar across its expanse.
Spend the afternoon on a walking safari at Crescent Island. This crescent-shaped peninsula sticks out into Lake Naivasha. The lake hosts vast numbers of hippos, which frequently come onshore at Crescent Island. The sanctuary allows animals free access and you will get the opportunity to walk alongside giraffe, zebra, oryx, kudu, eland, Thompson gazelle, wildebeest, impala as well as buffalo and possibly hyena. Be wary of the hippos, hyena and buffalo.
  Day 5 – Naivasha – Hells Gate
Hells Gate National Park | Flickr | Ninara
Hells Gate National Park is the park on which the Lion King movie was based. A dramatic volcanic landscape of peaks and valleys, caves, rivers and its infamous gorge. Essentially a wildlife sanctuary – the park is largely filled with Kenya’s more friendly animals; Zebra, Hartebeest Thomson’s Gazelle, Klipspringer, Antelope and Reedbuck, although there are buffalo too and the odd Leopard and Lion may haunt the mountains. Hell’s Gate is named for its geothermal activity; hot springs and plumes of scalding steam are a common site and huffing, puffing, belching park that is an experience not to be missed.
Day 6 – Naivasha – take a boat tour and visit Crater Lake
Spend the day on the lake. Take a boat tour and get up close and personal with the hippos. You can tour the entire lake where experienced guides will navigate your stomach clenchingly close to huge hippo families. The lake has amazing birdlife, eagles and herons in huge numbers as well as the fiercely ugly marabou stork.
In the afternoon visit the dormant crater lake volcano. A jade-green lake fills the pit on the extinct volcano. Visit the sanctuary with its many trails up and around the volcano, the park is filled with game and has views all over the rift and Naivasha surrounds.
Day 7 – Return to Nairobi & visit Spinners Web
Return to the top of the rift and back to Nairobi.
Spend your last afternoon shopping for souvenirs at the wonderful Spinners Web. A huge house filled with treasures from all over Africa. Pick up Maasai beads, wooden carvings, woven rugs, reed bowls and vibrant clothing and jewellery. Enjoy lunch in the greenhouse before returning to your hotel.
  Where to Stay in Nairobi?
Tourists may prefer to stay in the outer suburbs of Karen and Langata where the Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre are situated and there is easy access to Nairobi National Park.
  Karen Gables
This Cape Dutch-inspired boutique hotel is situated down a quiet lane at one of the most prestigious addresses in Nairobi. Once inside you are spirited away from city life into a world of tinkling streams and nature-filled gardens.
  Hemmingways Nairobi
Part of a collection of elite hotels it’s hard to imagine that this grand plantation hotel has only 45 rooms. Its elegance and serenity are unmatched in Nairobi. It houses an excellent restaurant, a sundowner bar with views over the Ngong Hills and an onsite spa and pool.
  When to visit Nairobi ?
Nairobi is in the highlands and the weather is considerably cooler than the rest of Kenya. In the long rains – April to June it can become quite cold and the rains can be long and frequent. In the short rains- October to November the rains are more sporadic, often sunny days with rainy evenings and nights. For the rest of the year, the weather is mostly hot and sunny. It can get very warm during the summer months of Dec-March.

'What's Up, Chapo': Man Who Helped Catch Drug Lord Speaks
For the first time since he began hunting one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, the man who helped make the second capture of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, in 2014, is revealing his identity and telling his story.
Former Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Andrew Hogan appeared on the "Today" show Wednesday to talk about the intricate tactics he used to track down Guzman, who headed the Sinaloa Cartel that authorities say supplied most of the methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana that entered the U.S.
YouTube Shooting Suspect ID'd; Parents Reported Her Missing
Guzman rose through the Sinaloa ranks in the 1980s and was first arrested in 1993. He made his first escape in 2001, from a Mexican maximum-security prison, by hiding in a laundry cart. It would take 13 years for U.S. and Mexican officials to catch up with him again. After a second escape and infamous interview with actor Sean Penn in 2015, Guzman was finally caught in 2016 and extradited to the U.S., where he is awaiting trial in New York City and facing 17 counts that include money laundering, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and murder.
During those 13 years Guzman was on the run, Hogan infiltrated his cartel in 2010 and tracked the phones of his closest associates. Hogan read their text messages, he said, “every single one of them.”
Facebook Asks Users If They Think It's 'Good for the World'
He even moved to Mexico City to zero in on Guzman.
“It was in the details,” Hogan told Savannah Guthrie about following the electronic trail to Guzman. He and his team began intercepting members of Guzman’s inner circle to “dismantle layers” until they reached the top. When they got to Guzman’s personal secretary, they located the kingpin and moved in.
US Proposes Tariffs on $50 Billion in Chinese Imports
In 2014, Hogan and other members of U.S. and Mexican law enforcement followed the surveillance to the resort town of Mazatlan. Despite Guzman being a billionaire drug lord, they found him living at the Miramar condominiums, a way of life that surprised Hogan.
“He almost afforded himself no luxury,” Hogan explained. "Same plastic tables and chairs in every safe house that was designed the same way.”
As agents entered the Miramar, Hogan stayed outside guarding the perimeter, fearing Guzman would try to escape those closing in. Then, he heard a call come over the radio: “They got him.”
Hogan, wearing a black baseball cap “souvenir” he snagged from Guzman’s own closet, “ran right up to him,” he said.
Hogan came face-to-face with the man he had been hunting for seven years. He explained what he did next: “Jumped into his face and said the first thing that came to my head. I screamed: ‘What’s up, Chapo?’”
“Our eyes locked there for a second, and they threw him into the back of my car," he added.
Video was taken of the agents after Guzman's capture, and Hogan and others can be heard celebrating and yelling, “Yeah, baby.”
But Hogan and his teammates had no time to revel in their victory. Less than two years after entering a Mexican prison, Guzman was on the run again, having escaped through underground tunnels.
“It was pretty predictable,” Hogan said.
Nevertheless, in 2016, Guzman was captured for a third time and sent to America to face justice.
While “the dangers are certainly real,” Hogan said, he is not afraid to “embrace” his role in the capture of one of the most elusive criminals and share the story of a seemingly impossible feat.
“Immediately after the capture, I knew that I was gonna tell this story, one way or the other,” he said, explaining that he laid it all out in his new book, "Hunting El Chapo," which Sony will soon turn into a major movie.
“It was time to step up and be proud of what I had done and what my teammates had accomplished, Hogan added. "This story goes beyond just the one man. It’s about two countries coming together and accomplishing something that most thought was impossible.”
Hogan's full interview with "Dateline" airs Sunday on NBC.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A southwest Missouri husband and wife have been indicted in the killing of the woman’s biological teenage daughter, who had recently moved in with them after spending most of her life with an adoptive family in Minnesota.
Rebecca Ruud, 39, and Robert Peat Jr., 31, are charged in the indictment returned Wednesday with first-degree murder and an alternative count of child abuse resulting in the killing of Savannah Leckie.
Robert Peat Jr., 31, and Rebecca Ruud, 39, are indicted in the killing of Savannah Leckie.
Investigators say Savannah had started living with Ruud in Theodosia, Missouri, within the last year. Ruud and Peat married last month, on the same day that bone fragments identified as the teen’s were found in a burn pile on the couple’s rural property. Details of how she died have yet to be determined.
“It is a horrible tragedy. This was a 16-year-old girl who was murdered,” Ozark County prosecutor John Garrabrant said. “I have been doing this for 27 years and I’ve never had a case like this.”
The indictment replaces identical charges filed last month against Ruud. Peat hadn’t previously been charged. Besides the murder counts, the couple also is facing charges of tampering with physical evidence and abandonment of a corpse. They are being held without bond. Their attorneys didn’t immediately return phone messages seeking comment.
After Rebecca Ruud gave birth, she immediately gave Savannah up for adoption to David Leckie and Tamile Leckie-Montague, Sheriff Darrin Reed said in an interview last month. David Leckie and Tamile Leckie-Montague divorced in 2012, and Leckie-Montague’s fiancé “couldn’t get along with Savannah,” Reed said.
Savannah was homeschooled and her only contact with others came from working as a junior firefighter in Theodosia, where Ruud was a volunteer firefighter, Reed said. On July 18, Ruud reported a fire, according to a probable cause statement. She told fire officials she was burned trying to save the girl from the fire, but refused to let them talk to Savannah.
Reed said he believes Savannah was dead or unconscious at that time.
The indictment said only that Savannah’s death was caused “by unknown means.” Two days later, Ruud reported Savannah missing. She later claimed Savannah ran away because she blamed herself for starting the fire.
Several searches of the property were conducted, including one on Aug. 4 that uncovered human bone fragments in a field about 400 yards (365 meters) from the home. Reed said Ruud and Peat “got antsy” because an anthropologist was sifting through the ashes and left, saying they were going to get legal counsel. They got married and stopped by the public defender’s office in a neighboring county seeking representation, even though they hadn’t been charged or questioned.
Reed said he thinks they married so they couldn’t’ be forced to testify against one another, although that privilege doesn’t apply when the victim is younger than 18.
Leckie-Montague, who lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Columbia Heights, told authorities that Ruud “continually complained” about how Savannah acted on the farm and the time and money it took to care for the girl, according to the probable cause statement.
Ruud’s ex-boyfriend, Buddy Smart, told investigators he had seen her discipline Savannah by forcing her to crawl through a hog pen and making her to bathe in a pond, the affidavit states. Ruud acknowledged that was true and told investigators that when Savannah cut her arm “in a suicidal gesture,” she forced the girl to scrub the wound daily with alcohol and salt as punishment.
Ruud was arrested at a Greyhound bus station in Springfield on Aug. 21. Reed said Ruud was a flight risk who has connections with “people who can hide her out.”
“I’m telling you it’s a bizarre case,” Reed said.
