Sad Mondays #2
Author: Magda Wisniowska - Munich, February, 2020.
Art is the sexualization of survival; or equally sexuality is the rendering artistic of nature, the making of nature into more than it is…(Elizabeth Grosz, An Un-likely Alliance, 49)
The above quote is taken from Elizabeth Grosz’s short entry ‘Eight Deleuzian Theses on Art’ in the anthology focused on Deleuze and Guattari’s relation to ecological thinking, ‘An Un-likely Alliance - Thinking Environments with Deleuze and Guattari,’ in which she rejects the holistic perspective of traditional eco-feminism in favour of a bifurcated Darwinian understanding of nature to produce a definition of art. For me, the above echoes Adorno’s discussion of natural beauty, especially when he writes,
For [natural beauty], nature is exclusively appearance, never the stuff of labor and the reproduction of life, let alone the substratum of science. Like the experience of art, the aesthetic experience of nature is that of images. (Adorno, Aesthetic Theory, 65)
In both cases, art is defined as an excess to nature: in art there is something “more” than the given nature, nature is made into more than it is - it is appearance as well as the stuff of labour or reproduction of life. But whereas in Adorno, nature is made aesthetic through the concept of the image and thus involves the concept of human consciousness, in Grosz, the kind of nature found in art is an animal force that displaces consciousness (as well as unconsciousness) as the defining quality of the human. As she states, the “animal” is the driving force behind all human productions, art, science, and philosophy.
“Art is the sexualisation of survival,” meaning it belongs to one of the two evolutionary forces identified by Darwin, the sexual rather than natural selection, used to attract sexual partners for the purpose of the sexual encounter. If we can believe it, just as birds have song and colourful feathers for attracting their mate, we have a comparable impulse for the decorative, which lies behind the urge to produce art, even if this urge occasionally goes against our need for survival. Art is our plumage, just as extravagant and just as useless.
Art makes “nature more than it is,” because these forms of bodily display, which excite and produce pleasure, link the living body with the material earth. For Grosz, art is the result of us humans being able to extract something from our habitat, be it a property, quality, or force—colour or sound—not with the aim of this becoming useful, but precisely for the irregularity of its appeal, and the pleasure it can bring. Art is the ability to detect a property which resonates with our bodies, remove it from the habitat in which it is found, and place it within a world of seduction, a world described by Grosz as “virtual.” In this, Grosz’s Deleuzian interpretation of the human animal impulse as sexual selection resonates with Adorno’s description of natural beauty as an “image,” but mirrors it erotically.

TONIGHT /// 6.7.18 /// 22H - LATE
It's something of an honour to welcome representatives from the institution that is the long running and super crucial Kreuzberg DIY venue and art space WestGermany to Das Gift for an evening's worth of hand picked records, thought provoking conversation, and maybe a whiskey or three. WestGermany On the 1st of May 2005 the communication-project WestGermany opened up its office in the ZENTRUM KREUZBERG at Kottbusser Tor, Berlin-Kreuzberg with a performance/streetAction „WhiteCube vs. BlackBlock“. A team of Punch and Judy – glove-puppets (Kasper, king, Seppl and crocodile) representing museum director/curator, artist and critic threw white, cobble-like styrofoam-cubes from the concrete parapet of the balcony into the 1st of May-demonstration/riots and the marched up police squads. This performance exemplifies paradigmatically the political/performative/site- and situation-specific approach/attitude of WestGermany in the flashpoint of art and social reality sited in an urban-rhizomatic field. The art- and project space WestGermany is committed to confront and integrate artspecific contexts with urban, social and aesthetic structures of the local environment. The space is a contradictory display meaning to touch different concepts of reality emerged by a cultural crossover of energy and progress, illusion and disillusion in the middle of one of Berlin´s most critical and paradigmatic spots of social life (Kreuzberg / Kottbusser Tor). WestGermany´s headquarter is located in a smashed and ripped down doctor´s office. The conceptual choice and design of the location is related to the deconstructive avantgarde of the 70th and 80th in arts and theory (Matta-Clark/Metzel/Foucault/DeleuzeGuattari/Derrida..). From this point it is questioning and researching the relevant symptoms of society´s cracks and crumbles, collapses and changes and is to be conceived as a utopian-heterotopical site as well as an institution for contemporary arts and music. The label „WestGermany“ therefore provokingly symbolizes a fading FederalRepublicOfGermany-romanticism and memory/track between wistful retro-reverie, kitsch and current self-identification. By means of contradictory group shows site-specific factors and potentials at the so-called „Kotti“ (place/environment/situation: Kottbusser Tor) are taken up and reinforced, by means of art-actions and project-art idealistic anti-depressives against neoliberal ideology, reality-caused motivation-traumata and the imminent recession are provided, paths and bridges are constantly tried to be built into the direct surroundings. With an international music program we point up and amplify our motivation as a hetero-utopian community–project of different subcultural scenes. WestGermany is a PostPunkRockIndieHiphopElectronic – life-space in the heart of the run-down and fucked up, though paradigmatically flourishing urban-architectural Social-Vision of the ZENTRUM KREUZBERG-building, a city planning-dinosaur of a more optimistic epoch. The project has begun and is extending rhizomatically as regards both content and space. It is coming from everywhere and going to anywhere. From a known place to an unknown land. The project is formulating and evolving a distinctive attitude amongst certain fixed points. WestGermany as a project and projection is a stream of consciousness in a juxtaposed field of relations, connections and relationships. Placing-itself it refers to other placings, which it reflects, suspends, neutralizes and inverts. (January 2006)

Sad Mondays #13
Author: Magda Wisniowska – January, 2021.
Becomings-animal plunge into becomings-molecular. This raises all kinds of questions. (Thousand Plateaus, 272)
Like Deleuze and Guattari, we must begin at the end. ‘All becomings are already molecular’ they write  (ibid), including becoming-animal, and as we discussed last time, as well as  becoming-woman (see Sad Monday 12, part I and II). Becoming-woman is merely the first step towards becoming molecular that all becomings begin with and pass through. Becoming-woman is this first step because, in our world, man is ‘the molar entity par excellence’ (292), the standard on which the majority is based, and becoming-woman is the dismantling of this standard. But in the end, the woman we become is not a molar entity (that would only substitute one standard for another). Instead we become woman by entering a proximity and emitting particles that enter the relation of movement and rest (275). This is the zone of a ‘microfemininity’ which produces in us ‘a molecular woman’ (ibid.).
They are right to say that this raises all kinds of questions — but surely, the first must be, what are these molecules of which they speak?  What is a molecular woman, in contrast to a non-molecular one? A woman reduced to particles? And here even the least scientific of us think of bodies composed of, if not molecules exactly, then certainly atoms, held together by their different chemical bonds: atoms floating around in constant movement, electrons spinning, eventually bumping into other atoms, attracted or repelled, and at rest when a favourable bond is formed, electrons shared or transferred. This is how Deleuze and Guattari’s plane of consistency, their plane of nature, sounds like. As we know already, on this plane,
There are only relations of movement and rest, speed and slowness between unformed elements, or at least between elements that are relatively unformed, molecules and particles of all kinds. (266)
There is an image of Deleuze’s thought which fits well with my description of a realm of molecules. This is the commonplace idea of Deleuze as a philosopher who sees reality as ‘a swirling ocean of flows, events, intensities, and processes’ (Kleinherenbrink, 31). As Arjen Kleinherenbrink argues in his book ‘Against Continuity, Gilles Deleuze’s Speculative Realism,’ in this particular interpretation of Deleuzian thought, while the outside world may present itself as consisting of individual and external entities, ontologically however, it consists of an intensive, virtual realm of flows and processes. In other words, ontologically speaking it is our world of unformed molecules in movement. The image Kleinherenbrink uses to explain this interpretation is of a tablecloth (32). The outside world’s apparent discreteness is no different than its twists and folds. There might seem to be things ‘here or there’ but straighten the cloth out a bit and pull it across, and you see that there is nothing other than cloth ‘all the way down’ (ibid.). Not a plan but a plane of consistency.
In these interpretations, becoming-woman would be the smoothing, ironing out of the kinks to see the ontological fabric of life better. Certainly, this cloth metaphor seems pertinent to my description of the zig-zaging of man’s becoming-woman and woman’s becoming-animal as the adoption of a disguise (see Sad Mondays 12, part I and II) . In this process of becoming-molecular, we —both as men and as women— lift the cloth and hide underneath, somewhat like ontological ghosts, intent on becoming one with the matter of our camouflage.
But to think of Deleuze’s philosophy in this way, as espousing a world of atomic particles that underpins the perception of all matter, is according to Kleinherenbrink, a profound mistake. There is no tablecloth, no separation of realms into actual and virtual, no intensities, no flows and no processes. For a separation into two realms would violate one fundamental Deleuzian principle: no interiority. To posit such a realm behind the world of apparent concrete entities, is to present these entities as representations of that other, more elementary realm. How entities are, in their discreteness, individuality and externality, would be accounted for by something else that allows for their interaction, change and development (ibid. 34). Entities would be nothing in themselves, merely flawed and incomplete manifestations of this other force.
What then is the question of the molecular?

It’s impossible to not think about Gloria Anzaldua and the serpent, the coatl, in her Borderlands, while reading ‘Becoming-Intense, Becoming-Animal..’. The serpent is an important image-metaphor-sign-archetype-animal within Chicana cultures. The serpent keeps surfacing at several levels in Borderlands, and there is very clearly a movement towards becoming-serpent, becoming-Chicana, becoming a member of the New Mestiza in the text. The serpent is never an end-point, but always simply a sign of becoming, of movement and of a powerful re-orientation of one’s reality.
Some fragments from the text:
Sueno con Serpientes
Dead,
the doctor by the operating table said.
I passed between the two fangs,
the flickering tongue.
Having come through the mouth of the serpent,
swallowed,
I found myself suddenly in the dark,
sliding down a smooth wet surface
down down into an even darker darkness.
Having crossed the portal,
the raised hinged mouth,
having entered the serpent's belly,
now there was no looking back,
no going back.
Why do I cast no shadow?
Are there lights from all sides shining on me?
Ahead, ahead.
curled up inside the serpent's coils,
the damp breath of death on my face.
I knew at that instant: something must changeor I'd die.
Algo tenia que cambiar.

In a New England college where I taught, the presence of a few lesbians threw the more conservative heterosexual students and faculty into a panic. The two lesbian students and we two lesbian instructors met with them to discuss their fears. One of the students said, "I thought homophobia meant fear of going home after a residency."
And I thought, how apt. Fear of going home. And of not being taken in. We're afraid of being abandoned by the mother, the culture, la Raza, for being unacceptable, faulty, damaged. Most of us unconsciously believe that if we reveal this unacceptable aspect of the self our mother/culture/race will totally reject us. To avoid rejection, some of us conform to the values of the culture, push the unacceptable parts into the shadows. Which leaves only one fear - that we will be found out and that the Shadow-Beast will break out of its cage. Some of us take another route. We try to make ourselves conscious of the Shadow-Beast, stare at the sexual lust and lust for power and destruction we see on its face, discern among its features the undershadow that the reigning order of heterosexual males project on our Beast. Yet still others of us take it another step: we try to waken the Shadow-Beast inside us. Not many jump at the chance to confront the Shadow-Beast in the mirror without flinching at her lidless serpent eyes, her cold clammy moist hand dragging us underground, fangs barred and hissing. How does one put feathers on this particular serpent? But a few of us have been lucky - on the face of the Shadow-Beast we have seen not lust but tenderness; on its face we have uncovered the lie.

For perhaps the flows are not yet deterritorialized enough, not decoded enough, from the viewpoint of a theory and practice of a highly schizophrenic character. Not to withdraw from the process, but to go further, to ‘accelerate the process,’ as Nietzsche put it: in this matter, the truth is that we haven’t seen anything yet (449).
