Bait and switch
If you live in Michigan, you may have noticed mini-mountains of apples, sugar beets and corn suddenly rising up at your local gas station.
You may have deduced that the produce isn't meant for human consumption and, noting that it's hunting season, said to yourself, "I thought baiting deer was illegal in Michigan."
You would be right; supplemental feeding of deer - by hunters, or by those who simply like to watch them from their back windows - is strictly against state law. The ban was imposed in 2018 as an attempt to stem the spread of chronic wasting disease in the herd.
And it doesn't matter if you actually intend to feed wildlife other than deer; if it's on the ground and attracts deer - inadvertently, or not - it's still a violation.
The thing is, while it's illegal to use the bait for it's intended purpose, it's not illegal to sell it.

Deer Season 2023…How’d it go?
Tumblr media
While deer season is still going strong in most of the country, besides some short trips to the field around my home here in North Carolina, deer season is mostly over for me this year. Once again this year I travelled with some friends up to Kentucky to hunt some private land. It’s a gorgeous piece of property surrounded by a lot of other private land, so the deer population is going strong. The opportunity for large deer are very good. If you’re mainly a meat hunter in which I and as well as my buddy who travelled up there with me, there’s no problems whatsoever in harvesting some deer to fill the freezer for the year.

This season I had planned on picking my shot at a deer the first few days, very similar to last year. I truly wanted to have a chance on a deer with my new Henry All-Weather in .44 Magnum that I had picked up from Brownells earlier this year. Using Hornady FTX 225gr loads and topped off with the Brownells MPO 1-6 optic I knew it should be a good rifle for the majority of areas I hunt there in Kentucky. The first morning out, it was very apparent that the rut was in full swing. Some where past the 10 AM hour I saw a big 10 point buck. I ranged him at around 113 yards broadside from me…he was walking through slowly. Knowing that was probably the far end of the range of this rifle, I set up for a shot and missed. Took a second shot and the buck ran so I thought I had connected with that second shot. After waiting some time, I climbed off of my trees stand and started making my way towards where I last saw the buck and there he was. To my surprise, he was standing there broadside to me looking straight at me at about 80 yards. He was in pursuit of a doe over where I had previously saw him. He gave me all the time I needed to setup with my shooting stick, uncap my scope, cock the hammer and take another shot. This time I saw him fall and knew he was down. What a dandy of a buck he was too. One of his tines had a portion broken off, either during his fall or during fighting. Man was he a big boy! Definitely felt blessed to have not 1 but  opportunities to harvest this buck.

After that, I spent time in the woods for the next few days watching many deer! The bucks were chasing doe around nonstop. I had never seen so many deer. My plan was to harvest a doe sometime later in the week, but this time with my Aero Precision 6.5 Grendel AR-15 that I’ve been hunting with the past 4 years. On Wednesday morning I watched some deer walking through and singled out a doe that had no young ones with her. She was around 60 yards or so when I took a shot. She left a good blood trail and laid up in a runoff about 25 yards away. At that point I was pretty much done with the deer I planned on harvesting, but did spend as much time in the woods as I could during the rest of my time there. I are hope to be able to make it up to Kentucky again next season…what a magical place!
