Streaming Content for Cult Fandom
So I went poking around trying to find a free streaming source for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and stumbled on this YouTube account of a guy named Owen Davies who is remastering some series that are difficult to find streaming these days. His mission is charming:
Somehow, my channel seems to have turned into a project to remaster and preserve pre-HD media (films, TV shows, miniseries, etc.). I hope you enjoy what's here. [...] I don't monetise my channel or any of its content. It wouldn't be right to do so, since most of it is original work by industry professionals that I've just attempted to clean up and polish with a modern HD/4K shine. YouTube is my hobby, not my source of income. If you run across any ads on my content, I assure you they've been put in place by the legal rights holders in order to gather revenue - which is what allows me to legally make most of this content public :^)
If you need a free, easy way to stream the following shows, he has them in lovely organized playlists ready to go:
Stephen King's Rose Red (2002)
The Nightmare Worlds of H.G. Wells (2016)
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015)
The 10th Kingdom (2000)
Dead Like Me (2003)
Farscape (1999)
Merlin (1998)
Jim Henson's The Storyteller (1988)
Roar (1997)
...and lots more! A lot of "cult" TV content that has been kicked to the curb by its original streaming providers, or is only available in specific countries. In an age when digital content is just disappearing because CEOs consider it too expensive to bother retaining, it's really cool to see someone doing restoration work that also makes things available to the public for free.
ETA: I know there's debate around losing the "grittiness" of old media and whether 4k restoration removes that magic. I get that debate! For me, this is more about preserving content that is disappearing/hard to access. Okay, enjoy the show!

Dead Like Me S01E01
You can't save any of them. All you can do is make it easier. That may not seem like a lot, but it is.

See the thing about Hannibal is that I get the impression that, for a lot of the fandom, it's their only Bryan Fuller show. Which, fair enough, it's a great show, but A. you're really missing out, and B. I think there's a direct link to this and the constant "Hannigram was queerbaiting" takes.
I get the temptation to look at the show, see that it was airing alongside shows like Sherlock and Supernatural, and lump it in with that same cultural moment, but I think doing so flattens the arc of Fuller's career to a frankly unconscionable degree.
Like, we're talking about a guy who used the pilot of his first show in 2003 to pretty clearly set up the main character's father as a closeted gay man, only to have him ruthlessly straightwashed when he had to leave the show five episodes in due to the horribly homophobic and shitty treatment he received from studio high-ups at MGM Television. The beating heart of Wonderfalls' first episode is Sharon's coming out to her sister.
Fuller has pushed for queer representation for decades at this point, so I think painting it as "Fuller and NBC just wanted the ratings and so they cynically crafted their show to appeal to gay people without ever intending to follow through" rather than "Fuller once again ran into mainstream network television's reticence to feature openly gay characters as anything other than jokes or bit parts" feels like a bit of a bad-faith reading.

The whole Bryan Fuller thing has got me thinking about how we’re tought to relate to art as a cult of personality. Cinema specially is an inherently collective media. A bunch of people were a part of making your favourite movie or TV show yet we’re activelly encouraged to think of it in terms of a specific author and to kinda love it as this author’s work. To look for more this author has made and try to find similarities between them. And then we find what we love the most about these pieces of art and project how it makes us feel into whoever we’ve decided is the author. Think of them as posessing the positive characteristics we see on their work somehow. Make them our friends. Then they do something and you’re reminded you don’t know them at all.
For about a decade Hannibal has been my favourite piece of media probably of all time. I know it had a lot of hands in its making and it is not a product of Bryan Fuller and Bryan Fuller alone. But there’s still a lot of him in it, for better or for worse. He’s all over the show and I grew up having certain thoughts about him because of it.
Idk guess I lost focus and had a parasocial relationship

I’m not afraid of pain because nothing will ever hurt me more than the cancellation of Dead Like Me (2003-2004).
