thoughts on red ribbon army saga + that stuff at the end with baba (ep 29-78)

ill be real with you started off pretty boring

like goku a lot this series, but in my opinion hes at his best when he is interacting with other characters. There is really charming found family dynamic in this show and I think the show is at its strongest when they focus on that

also the general silver guy was hyped up a lot and he got taken down so quickly lol, i feel like the show wanted my to take these guys seriously but they did absolutly nothing to convince me that they were really a threat

the next general was even worse, and I honestly cant even remember what happened in most those episodes just that it was boring as shit. The show kept flashing to suno and her dumbass family like they thought i gave a shit about them (i did like eighter tho)

FINALLY it starts getting good once we get to general blue, bulma and krillin were reintroduced and that instantly improved the quality in my opinion

general blue himself was actually crazy, hes a 'queer coded villain' except i guess toriyama forgot about the coding part and just made him queer. They literally call him gay in the show and theres this one scene where he asks out a little boy??? that was wild.

I was super disappointed after this arc ended tho cuz that meant bulma and krillin were gonna fuck back off to secondary character land. HOWEVER soon after this we are introduced to the cutest character in the show:

this arc is when the saga as a whole finally gained some direction. Before this point it was just about goku trying to find the fourth dragon ball specifically, there werent any real stakes. But after oopa dad dies I finally had a reason to be invested in his journey. Also it was so nice to see how much goku cared about oopa and about bringing back his dad. Like i said before, goku is at his best when hes interacting with people he cares about.

After that arc we get goku stomping the absolute shit out of the red ribbon army. This is where the red ribbon army saga ends but im gonna keep going cause the next 9 episodes were still about getting the last dragon ball

and oh boy did most of those last few episodes suck. Despite having the entire cast there it was still just SOOO boring. It was basically just tenkaiichi lite, except the random fighters were even less interesting than they were in the first one.

But it did get better for the last four episodes, the part when goku was reunited with his grandpa legitimately made me tear up AND we were reintroduced to pilaf gang and they are always a blast. Plus we finally got to see oopa and his dad reunited which was obviously super touching.

All in all this saga probably had the most lows and highs of any of the sagas thus far. But the highs definitely ended up outweighing the lows in the end (but im still never gonna rewatch the muscle tower bullshit again in my life)

Huhhhh I know defeating the king is going to be a fake ending based on posts I’ve read but I’m fighting him and I’m only on act 2/4??? I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. BUT IS THIS REALLY REAL? ARE WE ALL SEEING THIS?

- Dragon ball wont fucking die so they have to keep coming up with new shit and they were like OK. Let’s do a Goten & Trunks thing. It’s untapped potential. 

- Becasue of that, becasue of them needing a story to tell, they indirectly confirmed many things that many of us already assumed but could never be said. Things like: Goten & Trunks still hang out even when they get a little older (although to be fair in the Super anime we saw them together constantly, but still, the gap between that and EOZ was unspoken for); they play video games; goten & trunks are still on the same wavelength; THEY ATTEND THE SAME SCHOOL, etc etc.

- THIS IS HUGE ! CANON GOTEN & TRUNKS MANGA! THIS ISNT FUCKING FANART! THIS IS REAL SHIT!!!!!

Im only like um 10 pages in but commenting on what I’ve seen: ARE YOU SEEING THIS SHIT ???

MAYBE GOTEN ISNT BEING SHITTY but HE REALLY MEANS IT ?! Guys this is a canon manga. Toriyama worked on this shit. We can’t take this lightly. DOES TRUNKS NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SHIT?

Trunks says that and then Goten is like “Clearly you don’t know how to suicidebait people online.” IS THIS REAL?

Does Trunks sit down at the computer like Vegeta and cross his arms and squint really hard and like ... NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT’S GOING ON OR HOW IT WORKS? Like. Maybe he can do mechanical stuff. He can build a BMX bike and he can help his mom make blueprints. He can fix shit. But computers, are, like, it all happens behind the scenes, man. Those motherboards are tiny. Maybe he just doesnt fair well with what he cant SEE. Who knows...

I should save the rant about their superhero outfits for a different post but IDK when that’ll be. Theyre just so stupid. They’re skintight yet bulky at the worst points. Theyre ugly colors. GOTEN HAS A LONG, LUXURIOUS CAPE while Trunks has a TINY BABY BITCH CAPE and I KNOW they pick on each other for that stuff.

Goten is like “Atleast my cape isnt a napkin. Atleast when we’re in the air everybody can see my cape and know I’m a superhero.” And then when he goes to the bathroom and comes back there is pee and toilet paper stuck on his cape and it gets caught on all the door handles.

Trunks is like “Goten. You don’t live in Capsule Corp so I dont blame you for not knowing this, but when you design any new product, you have to learn how to marry STYLE with USE. My cape has attitude, it’s short and advant-garde, it’s recognizable, and it’s PRACTICAL. Your cape is gonna have you getting tangled up in yourself while trying to catch bullets.”

Goten is like “It is YOU who doesnt know anything about style. Watch my cape frame every pose I pull, silhouetting me against the backdrop of carnage that we have arrived to fix; watch my cape dance behind me like a loyal shadow; watch my large, classy, strong cape bring comfort to these towns on SIGHT, while your tiny baby bitch cape distinguishes you only as a feckless fool, an EMBARRASSMENT to heroes everywhere, and the forces of evil will point and laugh when you threaten them!”

and then when goten walks away Trunks just picks up goten’s cape and puts it on some piece of metal infrastructure protruding from the building theyre arguing behind, and he watches as it just completely tears off as Goten stubbornly maintains his pace walking away.

The speculation of Goku being an alien was there from the very beginning

The Saiyan reveal was never a retcon like people say it is. It’s such a great reveal because of how subtly it was built up throughout DB

Sure Toriyama definitely had no idea about the Saiyans at this point, but the little drops of evidence here and there prove that there was almost something more to Goku than just “kid who can turn into monkey at full moon”

With this I'm assuming the year we're listening to is the same year as it came out. Maggie said 2005 and Cecil replied that's 11 years ago so currently it was 2016.

Now, if I'm still going with my alternate realities/split realities then so far I have four??

The current canon (2016): Cecil has a sister named Abby. Knows who Leonard Burton are (presumably also was an intern? But I need to double check)

The Casette canon (ep 33): Cecil has a brother and no mentioned of sister. Was an intern when Leonard Burton was the voice. Night Vale is an established town.

The [Best Of?] canon (ep 67): Cecil sees Lee Marvin and others settled in a town they'd later call Night Vale. First known year is New Years eve of 1934; Cecil presumably in his 20s and an intern of Leornard Burton. The world ended in 1983.

There's ofc the reality split of [Best Of?] canon in which the world didn't end in 1983. But there's also Leonard's death and I'm not sure where to put that one?

Same with Earl bc, his childhood photo with the steam locomotive makes me think of ep 67... But anyway! Just throwing out some thoughts. It all can just be time is weird thing but so many things are the sake yet having different paths so it got me thinking of alternate realities/split realities stuff

final thoughts on 21st world martial arts tournament (ep 14-28)

A bit weaker in than the last arc, a pretty big part of that is how much I hate roshi and he was in a lot of this saga, all of his scenes for the first half were just super gross and it got tiring very quickly

i wish they had spent more time developing the other characters in the tournament (except for bacterian man, i wish they spent a little less time with him 💀) save for namu they were all kind of one note

it wasnt as funny as last saga but there were still some good moments. like when krillin and roshi acted out their fight for the commentator that made me laugh out loud

krillin was great, i remember loving him when i watched kai as a kid and that held up for db as well

krillin and gokus friendship was super cute, there wasn't really a moment when they stopped being 'rivals' and started being besties their relationship just developed naturally overtime, which i appreciated

i liked launchs 'good' side but i really wish they had given her 'evil' side literally any development at all, all she did when she turned evil was yell and shoot her gun, i would've liked to see her actually interact with the other characters

yeah thats about it, i dont have a lot to say about this saga other than it wasnt as good as the last one 💀 it was still very fun tho. pls less roshi next saga
