Congratulations, you've survived The Horrors!
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our very first Hermit Horror Week. We hope you had as much fun as we did creating and consuming all the fantastic writing and art made for this event!
If you want to see what was created... Here's the tumblr tag, and here's the tag on our blog. You can also see each day's set of posts by clicking on that day's specific tag at the bottom of this post.
If you still want to create for the event... Feel free! Reblogs will be a little slower from here out, but we'll get to everything you post eventually!
If you made something, and we didn't reblog it... Please please please reach out! We promise we didn't slight you on purpose: Tumblr is just a very functional website that does not show posts in the tag sometimes, and we are just some guys. I caught at least one post this happened to already and we would really love to make sure everything gets reblogged and archived.
And on that note, please add your fic to the AO3 collection! We've tried to catch everything that didn't get added and bookmark it to the collection, but things fall through the cracks and it's much better if you actually add it yourself. So if you haven't, please do and encourage others to do so as well!
Thank you all for playing, and Happy Halloween!

I was watching a video essay in YouTube around Black Swan and the Madonna/Whore dychotomy and just made me think on how much the HOTD fandom just uplifts the writers for making Ninicent a Madonna™. To the point they unironically go around painting her with a halo and a compare her with paintings of the Virgin Mary. At the end of the day she has nothing in the show that makes her a character except this archetype. And it's funny seeing so many self-proclaimed feminists (including the women writing this show) saying how groundbreaking this... Passive woman who suffers, cries, and does everything men tell her.
Like, Ninicent doesn't even balance between the two archetypes. She can't be the Whore™, the narrative doesn't let her, all that she could have done by herself (marrying the king, using her power to crown her son, staging the coup) is already done by Otto. She can't be a study of why these archetypes are reductive either because it's clear that the writers putting her in this Madonna box is intentional. They want her to be seen as this pure, demure little thing that did nothing wrong, but of course, the whole thing about her purity and victimhood comes along on how she is a victim of sexual abuse, how she doesn't enjoy sex, how she will never stop to Rhaenyra's 'low' and because she is 'suffering' she is apparently superior than Rhaenyra.
It's just a pathetic, fetishising way of writing, it's literally more sexist than anything GRRM himself wrote. Like, for all we critise the old guy for his continuous use of rape in his book, he never came with this idea of this or this female characters being raped making them superior and more worthy because how pitiful they are. But here we are with a show that claims that Rhaenyra deserved to die horribly because she had sex while her stepmother lived what every noblewomen in Westeros did and she didn't.
The writers (especially Sara Hess in her episodes) are so desperate to paint Rhaenyra as this whore who never cared about the consequences and less worthy of the crown of the Worthy Woman™ in comparison to Ninicent to the point they isolated Rhaenyra from any other positive relationships with other women she had in canon just so the two of them could be side by side for the audience to compare. Rhaenyra in Episode 6, 7 and 9 is the Whore™, poor Madonna Ninicent can't believe she is lying so awfully, she feels gaslighted by Rhaenyra's terrible lies, the scripts spends more time focusing on Ninicent's complaints than fleshing out Rhaenyra's relationships with her children. We have to hear again and again how offended she is by the existence of these children, how threatened she feels by the proof that Rhaenyra enjoyed some stolen moments with a sexual partner that wanted her and she wanted back and what a crime that is because Rhaenyra can't be happy while Ninicent Suffers™.
Said suffering wich is a complete fabrication of the show, never suggested or even implied in the book, and that was only created so the audience (both men and women) could fetishise it.
You would believe that by 2022/2023 this kind of writing would be like... considered backwards and ummm, stupid. But apparently no, it is hailed by the so called feminist fans, despite the fact that years ago we were saying that D&D were pigs for creating a rape storyline for Sansa that never existed. And it always makes me laugh that even the people that critise the show writing don't have the ovaries to blame the women writing it. Like no, it's all about the 'male gaze'... Despite the fact that half of the writing team in Season 1 were women and so many people that praise this fetishising writing changing Alicent Hightower's canon characteristics are also women.

In lieu of a week in the woods
sunday, august 27, 2023 ~ 11:30pm
just got back from 6+ days off the grid, swimming, drinking tea, porch sittin’, and generally revisiting old stomping grounds. somehow it still wasn’t long enough.
(you can add a read more on mobile now??!!)
Reading picked out some specific weird old trade paperbacks to read at the cottage, and successfully finished one: margaret atwood’s lady oracle. one of those books where I will be thinking about it forever, but not necessarily because I enjoyed it? good prose moments, good turns of phrase or moments of clear perception, but i found the main character sort of perplexing—the bits of old Toronto, vintage mid century canadian childhood and adolescence, were probably what will stick with me. That and the way that I think it was trying to get psychonanalytic but, in classic 80s feminist fiction style, it didn’t make a ton of sense. also the fatphobia? like, experimenting with the pov of someone with intense body dysmorphia / weight shaming / internalized fatphobia felt unempathetic? like i was supposed to be impressed or titillated or surprised by this choice, that the book would even consider having a main character who was fat. period typical, sure, part of the mid century setting, sure, but also like. gratuitous.
also finished italo calvino’s the baron in the trees, and a.k. larkwood’s the unspoken name, and started the audiobook for the long way to a small angry planet. Also began my harrow the ninth reread, and wow this book is good. and even more so when you can follow what’s happening.
listening only the fact that I did spend so long literally in the woods has prevented me from having in-depth thoughts and feelings about hozier’s unreal earth. more to come as I sit with it longer, but so far—strong positive feelings. some new ground, some old ground, and some things that bridge the two nicely. worth listening to with headphones or however you can pick up all the layers in the mix. I really like ‘Icarian carrion’ on this listen.
watching watched a couple of episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds this evening, since being back— ‘lost in translation,’ and the lower decks cross-over. loved seeing boimler and mariner in the flesh, and the different gags they fit into that one, despite the fact that one of the things I’ve liked most about this season has been the show gradually giving time to some of the more philosophical questions trek can explore—but lower decks does that too, sometimes better, and these two episodes back to back fit pretty well.
playing it was a very boardgame forward week at the cottage— clue, PARKS, and a new one for me, shadows over Camelot. not an uncomplicated setup, but some of the tie-ins to actual arthurian themes (the grail quest keeps pulling players in but it will grind them up and spit them out! the next generation are the ones who survive!) caught and held my enjoyment when the different mechanics threatened to lose it. I also tuned in to d&d remotely for a bit, though my connection was bad, and my rig was rated ‘haunted’ by the other players. they could hear crickets over the voice chat 😌🌲
making sewed a new patch onto my jacket and moved another two—picture to follow. didn’t do any of the mending I brought, but have had thoughts about what makes sense and what I might buy to supplement the projects. new fabric store on my commute deserves a visit, methinks.
working on truly the answer here is ‘not overthinking or delaying out of perfectionism’. which I have already done. finished all but the last eng 385 essay feedback, finished proofing for joe and responding to the department’s newsletter person for the piece she’s writing; still have to finish this letter of recommendation and these two (2!?) chapter drafts. the point is to be able to write a final sentence and just. let them go. learn how to not stop shy of finishing something. learn how to bring something (anything) to a state of some kind of completion. sure, right. sure.
if you need me, I’ll be back in the woods.

it always leads to you — sae itoshi x f!reader
most likely a mini multipart series (probably around 4-6 parts, each only about ~6-7k words each). nsfw + plot (porn w plot)
current stage: prologue finished, outline needs to be done
current wc: 4k
current tags: exes to fwb/situationship to strangers with a history to awkward co-parents to lovers (relationship status: it's complicated!), pregnancy, child is part of the plot, angst, character study into sae, timeskip, homesickness, nsfw
started off as a one shot (5 times you can't escape the memory of your ex, sae, + the 1 time he comes back) but while writing it, i realized that the reunion between the two of you opened the doors to a lot more possibilities. originally, i just wanted to have it leave off at him on your doorstep whenever he decided to stay in japan bc he heard of blue lock and wanted to stick around & since he was in the area, he would find himself coming back to you. (he breaks up with you before high school graduation when he decides to go to spain). however, that scene spiraled into you & him reconciling, and eventually, there was an open sort of ending where sae decides that maybe the two of you do have a fighting chance of working out.
HOWEVER, i wanted to explore this dynamic even deeper, so the fic kind of spirals away from the canon timeline + i'm introducing a timeskip. you & sae have this weird ass long distance situationship where the distance feels like too much of an obstacle to overcome, the two of you are always on the brink of a "break up", he ends up visiting, the two of you kiss & make up and have renewed hope that this shitshow of a relationship can still work, and it's just an endless, toxic cycle, really. there's genuine love, but he's too in his head & in an entirely different country — world, really — from you, and things are hard and he's shitty at feelings. at this point, sae is 20 & making his debut into the world of professional international football.
on the same day he's about to sign with a great team, he receives a phone call from you.
you're pregnant.
he hangs up without a word. (asshole behavior but seems p in theme with what we're shown so far abt him)
the next part following that is another timeskip. this time, sae is 27 and moving back home to japan. he's in the middle of recovering from an injury, one so bad that he will never be able to play soccer again, especially at the level he was it. now he's back home, licking his wounds, and having to face everything he's spent so hard trying to run away from.
i think this fic is my first attempt at redeeming a character; i know we don't know much abt sae or his internal thoughts + intentions, but i'm having fun with fleshing him out as a flawed person who actually had good intentions. he fucked up, majorly, and reader isn't keen on taking him back. you're colder to him than you ever were, and you barely want anything to do with him. swapping the dynamic on him is also really fun to do as a writer; sae goes from the one who's out of reach and reader is the one chasing after him but now, reader is the person out of reach & sae is the one doing the chasing.
song inspiration: renegade - big red machine ft. taylor swift, cardigan - taylor swift, betty - taylor swift, exile - taylor swift, best - gracie abrams, i know it won't work - gracie abrams, the last time - taylor swift, tis the damn season - taylor swift, right where you left me - taylor swift
married (with benefits) — rin itoshi x f!reader
most likely a loooong one shot (~13k, hopefully not over 20k) nsfw / porn w plot
current stage: outline in progress
current wc: tbd
current tags: fake marriage/marriage of convenience trope, wag culture, single dad!rin, son's teacher!reader, BREEDING KINK, falling in love, mutual pining, oh no there's only one bed!!!!, jealous!rin, protective&possessive!rin, "don't speak to my wife like that" trope
original post talking abt this can be found here
basically reader is FLAT BROKE LMAO and is given the opportunity of a lifetime bc rin itoshi needs to save face and beat his awful ex-wife in their custody battle for his son.
my heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue — jean kirstein x f!reader
nsfw / porn w plot one shot (~8k)
current stage: first scene that sets up the mood for the fic is completed
current wc: 1k
current tags: fwb to lovers, toxic relationship (not w jean), college/modern au, praise kink, love confessions, jean is just so sweet & so boyfriend ok, idiots in love, mutual pining, insecure!reader, nsfw
this was a request from a follower <3 basically reader originally likes eren and they're in a toxic situationship and reader is crying over eren at a party, you run into jean, he gives you the best dicking down of your LIFE. essentially, u fall in love w ur situationship but get a happy ending this time around lol

Comparing my two TWD fics featuring Ben Paul as a main character
Basically, I've written 2 fanfictions that feature Ben Paul from twdg as the main protagonist. Both are 100k+ words and I only really consider one complete.
(None of these have been published btw)
Story 1 is about Ben surviving in TWD Game. He survives season 1 and becomes the guardian of Clementine & Duck. It was written in 2021 and has not been touched since. Currently, the last chapter is at the ski lodge cabin w/ Kenny in season 2.
Story 2 is about Ben surviving in TWD Show. He joins Rick going to Atlanta and joins the main group. Several characters fates have been changed. It was started in mid-2023 and I'm still currently writing it to this day. Seasons 1-5 have been written, season 6 has just begun.
Below are comparisons I've noticed while rereading story 1.
First person vs third person
Story 1 is written entirely in 1st person. Older me feels physically sick and confused with younger me because why? I cannot name a single one of my WIPs that are written in first person. Story 2 is written entirely in third-person omniscient, which I find a lot easier to read/write.
2. Ben is OOC for the most part
In both stories Ben is more capable as a survivour and is more confident in his abilities and expressing himself. Both stories show Ben learning how to fight walkers early on, however TWDG Ben is more nervous compared to my TWD Ben. TWD Ben is more confident and humorous compared to TWDG Ben.
3. Skipping scenes?
In story 1, I never skip any scenes from the game. Everything has been written exactly how it plays out in the game besides changing certain things like character fates and such. In story 2 however, I skip a lot of scenes because the scene either;
A. Doesn't have Ben in it nor does it make sense to write him into the scene.
OR
B. I did not feel like writing it so I skipped it entirely.
4. Ben's relationships with other survivours
In story 2, I flesh out a lot of the relationships with Ben and the other survivours. I put a lot more detail and effort into developing relationships, but in story 1, I hardly do that. I would say Ben is the closest with Doug in story 1, besides Clementine and Duck.
5. Quantity and Quality
Both stories currently have a word count of over 100k. Story 2 (TWD) has beaten story 1 (TWDG) in the word count, with 150k words. By comparing both of my stories, it's clear that I've put a lot more effort into story 2. There's a lot more detail dedicated to describing locations and characters compared to story 1.
I'm thinking of rewriting story 1 at some point, by putting more detail and changing it from first person to third-person omniscient.
Do you want more details of my stories?

First Line Game
Tagged by @lexa-griffins
rules: don't reblog the first one, make a new post! look at the first lines of the last ten (10) stories you published. look to see any patterns you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any!
1) Famous AU (I remember posting it for clextober 2023, but I can't find it there or in my blog)
As per routine for the past several months, the group of musicians signed with arkadia Music's made their way into the hall of the hotel as they each finished their own interviews, every room on this floor was reserved for their pre-concert activities, and soon they would be leaving to the venue.
2) I'd like to be a bear this Halloween (clextober 2022)
She was almost falling asleep; her head dropping slightly every other minute before she could react and lift it back up. It had been a long while since she's dropped her book on the table, giving up on being able to understand the words she was reading.
3) Loved your Parting Gift (dead people are my favorite) (Clextober 2022)
The slightly salty scent of the only substance that could ever satiate her hunger filled her nostrils as she walked into her apartment, before she could manage a hold of her -un- natural instincts she was launching forward into her kitchen, following the smell and quickly sinking her fangs on the flesh on display of the body laying on her counter.
4) Thieve's Crew (Clexaweek 2022)
"You got her, Reyes?" The head of the team, Lexa Woods, self and socially proclaimed 'The Commander' asked as she leaned over her hacker's shoulder, with a hand in the van's wall over the screens and the other in the back of chair. She knew the latina had her, but she was wanting for her to show her where she could see.
5) BUILD Series NYU - Horizon Hukop Season One (Clexaweek 2022)
“Hey hey hey! Here we are at build NYC, everyone please welcome these are Lexa Woods and Clarke Griffin, who play Commander Alicia Clark and Queen Elyza Lexlands, two fabulous powerful women, out of many, I must add, on the sensational newly controversial show Horizon Hukop"
6) Guess we'll have to work it out (Clexaweek 2022)
It had been a very long week; with unhappy clients who had no idea what they were talking about, with her boss scolding her for those clients who complained about her incapacity to produce their unexplainable ideas they couldn't even picture themselves. Llexa was tired, and more than she would care to admit for sure.
7) Horizon Hukop - Sneak Peak II (Clexaweek 2022)
"And as I've been telling you for the past six years, I do not need a partner to rule by my side!" The Queen of Skykru exclaimed trying her hardest to keep her voice at the proper tone for this meeting with the clan's council, while also making sure there was no room for argument. She's been through this enough times to know that one small leak of her composure was all some of the eldest members needed to attack her.
8) Don't give up (Clexaweek 2022)
"Fuck!" Having met the other woman not more than a couple day ago shouldn't make the out burst surprising -at least considering that anyone as little prepared as they were would probably react the same- however the exasperated way in which the stoic, always calm biologist -who hasn't shown a glint of pother in her demeanor since the second they met- grunts angrily as she once again tries to climb the wall of ice they fell through about an hour ago, confuses her more than she would care to admit.
9) Horizon Hukop - Sneak Peak I (Clexaweek 2022)
"I told you; she's not a problem!" "She knows too much" the Commander declares as an explanation she didn't consider she needed to give, she turned away from the Queen and left her war paint on the war table "she disagrees with us" she continued "not to mention she's not even unhappy, she's angry at our decision"
10) LexaClarke (Clexaweek 2021)
Lexa has been struggling with telling her girlfriend about her powers ever since they started dating four years ago, she also would be lying is she said she never considered before, when she and Clarke were only friends. But it was complicated, it wasn't every day that you met someone with powers, and even if it was more common that one would think, it was definitely not common to meet someone who could quite literally control your mind.
Tagging: @eternalreignblog @ecfandom if you guys want, I think every other writer I follow has already been tagged, but feel free to do your own and say I tagged you (;

The role he couldn’t leave behind: Eddie Redmayne and Motor Neurone Disease. A Fan Interview
Tumblr media
Now heaped with acting awards and acclaim, Eddie Redmayne is frequently asked for insight into his craft — how does he research and transform for his roles, disappear into his characters and then shed them?  But a decade ago, as he wrestled with the unique physical complexities and the gravitas of portraying an icon, Dr. Stephen Hawking, Eddie hadn’t developed a “process” or “method” on which to lean. So he took a deep breath and, with the guidance of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, he immersed himself in the cruelties of everyday life with MND.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIFs by sirredmayne)
He was connected with clinics and invited into homes of patients unable to care for themselves, struggling to communicate, breathe — like that of the unforgettable Glenn Phillips.
Tumblr media
Eddie learned the nuances of the specialized healthcare and technology that simultaneously encumbers and enables. He touched flesh and muscle, cruelly atrophied.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By every measure, the film, “The Theory of Everything,” was a success. Eddie’s career, already on the ascent, soared. But it wasn’t only the awards and new opportunities that had changed his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2015, he eagerly became a Patron of the MND Association to help heighten awareness of its global research and support of patients and families throughout the U.K. Even before the honor and in the 8 years since then, he’s been consistent in his devotion, speaking eloquently of the ravages of the disease, making appearances at events, shivering and shuddering through two Ice Bucket Challenges, lending his image and voice to public awareness projects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His connection to the Hawking family has endured, too. Eddie wrote the foreword to Dr. Hawking’s final book, Brief Answers to the Big Questions, and at the professor’s funeral in Cambridge in 2018 read a passage about Time from Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament:
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.”
Tumblr media
Each year, for Eddie’s birthday on Jan. 6 (just two days before Dr. Hawking’s birthday, which is always noted), he now gives his blessing to a fundraising campaign organized by fans in his honor, supporting his patronage of the MND Association.
Earlier this week, reaching out to fans, Eddie agreed to share his thoughts about his commitment to the MND Association and his gratitude for fans’ efforts.
Charlotte Aguilar: 2023 marks a decade since you first began immersing yourself in the world of MND patients and carers, and you still find yourself deeply involved with helping to raise awareness of the disease. Why was this a role you couldn’t shake?
Eddie Redmayne: Firstly, a massive thank you for organising this. It means a great deal. The preparation for playing Stephen was a long one and as well as being able to spend a proper amount of time with Jane, Stephen and their wonderful family, I was also introduced to hundreds of people living with MND. It is a disease that I saw in all its detail and brutality and those people I met and their courage had a profound, lasting impact on me.
Tumblr media
CA: Of course, your relationship with Stephen Hawking received the most attention connected to The Theory of Everything, but how were you impacted by your encounters with others in the MND community? How does what you learned from people like Glenn Phillips, whom you studied and later visited with your Oscar, stay with you in how you view life?
Tumblr media
ER: Well, Glenn was just a brilliantly charismatic man — a passionate cinephile. He was also very open with me about the horrid tolls of the disease. He lived alone, and I remember visiting his house on a sweltering day. His doors were open to let in the air but covered with fly nets. I remember him being very concerned about keeping the fly nets in place. He reminded me that with MND you feel everything (of course), but there were parts of his body he was unable to move. So if a fly or a wasp landed on him he had no way of shooing it off. It was a specific but horrible detail of living with the disease, which of course I hadn’t preempted.
Tumblr media
CA: During the height of the COVID pandemic, you became involved with the MND Association on a different level, helping with creating awareness among Members of Parliament about the special needs of patients. Why was that important to you?
ER: The people who run the MNDA are brilliant, and I have long offered my support to them. During the pandemic, I was astonished to hear that people living with MNDA were not automatically placed on the ‘most vulnerable’ list here in the UK. It felt important to me to hear the discussion and witness the response from the politicians when challenged on this.
CA: There have been huge bursts of attention for MND that fade — the Ice Bucket Challenges, the popularity and acclaim for The Theory of Everything, and sadly the loss of a number of well-known MND sufferers. Why is it important to keep the disease top-of-mind with the public at all times?
ER: Of course there are many extraordinary causes out there in the world vying for the attention and compassion of the public, looking for their support. Because statistically MND affects a smaller proportion of the population than some other diseases, investment in research and finding a cure can be less forthcoming. From my personal experience, having spent time with Stephen, Glenn, and a host of families, researchers, and specialists in the field, it will always be a cause that I put my support behind.
Tumblr media
A sad postscript — a jolt of reality from June 8, 2017:

Thanks for the tag, @schmem14.  Original post here.
Tagging @soloorganaas, @squintclover, @bleepbloopbotz, @thememoryofthatday and literally anyone who hasn’t already been tagged! Love to see what everyone has accomplished.
I like this concept but  I’m not going to highlight every fic I wrote so I’ll share fun stats instead:
Word Count: 206,150
Hits: 42,797
Number of Fics started and finished: 35  (not including ficlets contained in compilation works)
Number of WIPs started: 1 with 7 chapters already posted. 1 that is almost done and ready to be posted. Several that I ave bits and pieces for that need to be fleshed out. A few that are just ideas.
Main ships I wrote this year
Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
Harry Potter/George Weasley
Euphemia Potter & Sirius Black
Favorite Background Ships: Lily Evans/James Potter, Nymphadora Tonks/Fleur Delacour, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley
Favorite Fic I wrote: I love all of my babies, but I have a soft spot for Sanctuary, my first AU fic.
Least Favorite Fic I wrote: I don’t know if I have any that I’m not fond of...but I would have taken more time with 1828 Days if I had known how things were going to work out. But given that, I am still happy with the result.
Most Popular Fic I wrote: A Work of Fiction, which I wrote with the lovely Garefinn for the Mixed up Writer’s Fest has the most hits overall, though Scripted and Revised grew the fastest while I was posting it.
Least Popular Fic I wrote: Let Us Both Sleep, the only non-HP fic I’ve written, and Learning to Bake are tied for the fewest hits.
AO3 Fic Writers who have inspired me and my writing this year: I wrote fics directly inspired by fics by fantismal, krethes and shalomdebbie. Others are: MsAlexWP, Soloorganaas (Jewish Sirius has my heart <3), Cithara, TracingPatterns, myheadsgonenumb, Ron’s Girl Friday...I’m sure there’s many more.
Favorite Ship: Always Wolfstar, though Harry/George also has a piece of my heart. I loved my Parvati/Lavendar gift, and am intrigued by Draco/Neville.
Least Favorite Ship: I don’t think this is really fair to say - I feel like whenever I say I’m not into something, I read something great and change my mind.
Fic Writing Breakdown by Season:
Winter: 7 (Jan/Feb), 6 (Nov/Dec)
Spring: 7
Summer:  8 (so many words written courtesy of Wolfstar Bingo ;-)
Fall: 5
Fics with accompanying media by other creators:
Let There be Light is accompanied by a podfic of chapters 1,2 and 4 by the lovely @burningaurora.
Goals for 2023: Hoping to finally finish a few of my WIPs, take part in the Remus Lupin fest, do the 2023 incarnations of Wolfstar Bingo and the HSS Rarepairs exchange, continue trying to write a little everyday and get more involved with writing some different ships/characters.

FREEDOM FROM THE PAST
We are entering a new season in 2023 of a fresh start! We are in a divinely appointed time of refreshing and restoring:
"So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame" (Joel 2:25-26).
This is a new day in which you may boldly declare, "Old things have passed away!" (see Isaiah 48:6-7).
GOD FORGETS YOUR PAST
Through our repentance, God always makes a way to free us from our past. We take this encouragement to heart -- not letting our past failures keep us from experiencing our future victories!
We remember this vital promise:
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:1-2 KJV).
The Lord has already lavished us with abundant, extravagant forgiveness and grace to empower us to leave behind:
every single past sin and failure, which includes -- the days of regret,
doubt and fear,
the many missed opportunities and failed relationships,
the seasons of backsliding and passivity,
the detours of the works of the flesh.
As we believe His Word of forgiveness and set our heart to seek the Lord, we will find overwhelming grace and mercies for each day (see Jeremiah 29:12-13).
AFFIRMATIONS
I never give up.
I ask, seek, and knock (Matthew 7:7) until I understand and implement God’s purpose for my life.
I never give in again to a mindset of guilt and failure (see Hebrews 10:35).
I was created to carry His glory and presence into a lost and dying world.
God has confidence in me. (see Deuteronomy 28:13).
I am His choice (see Ephesians 2:10), chosen for "such a time as this" (Esther 4:14).
GOD REDEEMS YOUR WOUNDS
Truly, it was by the stripes of Jesus Christ that we were healed (see Isaiah 53:5).
Even the wounds that we have suffered will become great avenues of healing. Since we are healed from our wounds -- then we receive grace for healing others! We bring Christ's healing and comfort to others in the areas in which we ourselves have been afflicted (see 1 Thessalonians 5:11).
GOD BRINGS BREAKTHROUGH
God is even now releasing divine favor to us for accomplishing great exploits for His glory. In Psalm 84:11 (NLT), we learn how He lavishes His blessings of grace and glory:
"For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right."
Matthew 7:8 AMP -- "For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, the door will be opened."
Even if you have not had revelation of God's CALLING on your life, do not lose heart! God is saying, "Try again!" It is time to regroup and try again, knowing that failure is never God's plan (see Jeremiah 29:11). You will see doors open that were closed to you previously. God is granting breakthrough.
You experience the overwhelming love and favor of God as you leave the past behind and boldly take hold of the your Christ calling and begin bearing fruit that remains for His Kingdom.

Scripts are not a novel, they are a handbook.
Perhaps it’s due to how my brain works, but I have always been more privy to scripts than novels, to the point my prose are pretty much structured like scripts.
But the above advice haunts me, because I always feel that I did not give enough pointers in my scripts, because while I know in my head the blocking and camera shots and all that, I’m just too lazy and the scripts are just way too long (because basically I’m writing several seasons in one go) for me actually flesh out what I’m doing. Perhaps I should spend each day taking one.
This thought comes from Local, a YouTuber who I agree 80%, which is a good percentage, and I think I’ll make a short post into a long one, by commenting on his ten rules.
#1 - Characters are Not People
I agree with this. It’s more ‘fun’ to write characters as archetypes and that is how I usually see characters in my stories. Then again, it’s mostly because we agree on the drive.
#2 - Purpose Before Personality
I am not going to knock down the pegs of fanfic writers, since I have a whole series about praising fanfics - Season 3 will definitely arrive soon BTW - but I would say OCs… is not writing.
That is to say, OCs are a different form of writing. OCs are not designed to pursue a purpose but to accentuate the setting, and hence should not be subject to the same rules. A good OC has no bearing on whether that character would be a good character in a story, and that is not some failure but perfectly intentional, and I would not bash OC creators for such a service.
I rarely have OCs in my writing, and if they do, they are usually very bland, as in they would make terrible OCs. I don’t really have a drive for OC creations, so there.
#3 - It’s Not About Audience
All I could say is that ‘if the story is good, the audience will exist’. Hence the rule.
#4 - Words are Actions
A critique against ‘show, not tell’, but not a critique since the argument really is… talk to show, not talk to talk. Dialogue needs to show something, not merely be a description.
#5 - Don’t Stop the Dominoes ever
You know, one of the series I despise is Star vs. Force of Evil. And the reason I despise it is precisely because the whole crew is radically shifting the stories to get to the right conclusion and it’s so obvious that the series does not want to go that way.
#6 - Incite Violence
That is the most basic of advice, but it’s not bad. It’s basic for a reason. You need conflict in a story! You need to connect ideas into the real world! Praxis! Sorry.
#7 - Draw Your Shapes
Another outline-favorable advice. As Logic himself posits, this is personal advice. Some people really do work better with drafting and drafting. I think, for me, it’s a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I heavily outline things, sometimes I just go with the faintest idea, and other times I have to do both back and forth. But outlines are not a bad thing. I agree.
#8 - Write Your Backstories Backwards
This is so natural and also just much easier, and yet people want to avoid this… I guess because it’s not natural enough? I think this movement of advice killed a lot of writing juice.
#9 - Remember the Power of POV
In memes, POV means setting, like, it has been generalized? Traditionally, POV is a worldview, like a tunnel, not a frame. It is how you want the world to be seen, or the basis to which to compare the different perspectives. And therefore… yeah, it’s pretty important.
#10 - Be Kind to Yourself
Last advice is always kind of this penance, like how all constitutions end with all these meta-caveat so that the document doesn’t fall apart. Yeah, it’s kind of like that.

Third Sunday of Advent
Isaiah 61: 1-2a,10-11
The prophet calls the people to rejoice because they have returned to their home from exile.
Psalm   Luke 1: 46-54
The liturgy choses Mary’s Magnificat as the response to the first reading.
Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians 5: 16-24
Paul invites the church to rejoice and to pray and be thankful for all God has done for them.
John 1: 6-8, 19-28
Early in John’s Gospel, the prophet Isaiah is quoted by John the Baptist who is called to prepare the way for the Christ.
In many churches pink vestments are worn today and the third candle of the Advent wreath which is pink, is lighted.  This Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday.  Rejoicing.  And Isaiah speaks of rejoicing as does Mary in the response for today.  We rejoice because we are coming closer to the Incarnation.  God is taking on our human flesh.
John’s Gospel launches quickly into the ministry of John the Baptist, and his call to prepare the way for the coming Messiah.  We hear John’s response to the religious leaders.  He was a concern for them because he was attracting a large following.  Did they fear they were losing power to this itinerate preacher? They asked him, “Who are you?”  John responds using the words of the prophet Isaiah.  “I am the voice of one crying in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord.”  He understood his call.
John the Baptist is such a model for people in leadership these days.  He understands his role. He is not captivated by large crowds, power, and remains focused on his commitment to prepare the way for the Lord.  His style is very different from his cousin Jesus ’style.  People come to him in the wilderness to repent and to be baptized.  Jesus goes from the wilderness to the people.  John is a man committed to the truth for which he was martyred.  He does not act like a special person because of the crowds he attracts, but remains focused on his call.
Sadly today, many leaders remain focused on themselves and choose directions that enhance their power. John stated, “One is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”  John is an example of truth telling which in many ways, is in short supply these days.
In our second reading, Paul is asking something similar of all of us.  John is pointing to Jesus and Paul invites the early church to be “preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Here is speaking of a future coming.
Advent is coming to a close in a little over a week.  Has it been a peaceful season for you?  Have you found things in your life that help you to rejoice?  And, who are the John the Baptists in our personal lives that continue to point us to Jesus and his message?
Today, Mary offers all of us the main reason for our rejoicing. “My spirit rejoices in God my savior. The Almighty has done great things for me.”

Sunday Morning Sermon, November 19, 2023
Romans 13:1-14: "The Submission of God's People"
====================================
Is there any more unpopular word than "submission"?
It bucks against our DNA as Americans... as Texans!
Certainly, independence and human rights are good principles! But if we're not careful, that good thing can turn into sinful pride and arrogance. We can move from good independence to pure selfishness.
Romans 12:1-2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Want to give yourselves to God?
- Give yourself to the Church.
- Give yourself in love.
- Even to your enemies!
Speaking of enemies...
How about the government?
Romans 13:1-14 ESV
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. 8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
What we Owe the Government (vv.1-7)
Basic Christian teaching: God appoints rulers and leaders.
Romans 13:1 ESV
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Daniel 2:21 ESV
21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;
And we say "AMEN!"
But what does that mean? ((v.1a)
- "Be subject..."
- That is to submit, to obey
But what about bad rulers?
- How did Daniel respond?
- How did Nehemiah respond?
What did they not do?
- Daniel refused to not pray.
- They refused to worship idols.
- Nehemiah refused to give up.
- David refused to kill Saul.
- The Apostles refused to not preach.
Romans 13:2 ESV
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
Acts 5:29 ESV
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
What did it mean for the early Church?
1 Peter 2:17 ESV
17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
What did it not mean?
- Giving worship to Caesar
So we submit, obey, and honor
- In the Lord
- But when that line is crossed
- We respectfully resist.
Paul has in mind the state functioning as it should.
Romans 13:3-4 ESV
3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.
- A "terror" to bad conduct
- "Bearing to sword" with "wrongdoers"
- "Approving" that which is good
This is the basic role of the state.
- Will they always do well?
- Are they sinners?
But God has given them the unique role of maintaining order and the rule of law in a broken, sinful world.
This is not the role of any one person.
Romans 12:18 ESV
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
It is for the state to wield the "sword" on God's behalf.
- The Bible does not teach absolue pacifism.
- The Bible condemns vigilante justice.
Why obey the state?
Romans 13:5 ESV
5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.
In the fear of God...
For the sake of conscience...
This is just regular common sense. If this is going to work... there must be rules, authority, justice, an consequences.
The only other scenario is outright anarchy.
Judges 17:6 ESV
6 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
This comes with the inevitable...
Romans 13:6-7 ESV
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
- A reality for the Romans
- A reality for today...
- This takes money!
Give what is owed.
- Obedience, honor, taxes?- YES
- Worship?- NO
Matthew 22:21 ESV
21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus says "yes" to paying Caesar taxes but "no" to paying Caesar to worship.- Tim Keller
You can disagree with politicians and still respect them. You can disagre with politicians and still bless them.
Resistance may be necessary when they ask for something beyond God's Word.
But political and social leanings never give you an excuse to be hateful, spiteful, and disrespectful.
What we Owe our Neighbor (vv.8-10)
Romans 13:8 ESV
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Probably sound advice on debts and loans... But the emphasis is on the "oughtness" of love.
Of all that we owe and ought to repay, love is the continuing debt we all owe. But it is also a fulfillment...
Romans 13:8-10 ESV
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
How does love "fulfill the Law"?
Matthew 22:37-39 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
How did Jesus summrize the Law?
- Love God.
- Love your neighbor.
But if you know Paul's argument in Romans to this point, you'll know that we've all failed miserably at this!
- We can't do this on our own.
- Jesus has done this for us.
- Jesus suffered with our failures.
- We have new life in him by faith.
- That overflows now in our lives.
Notice the outward flow of this.
- From our lives as individuals
- To the Body of Christ, the Church
- To even our enemies
- To the state
- To everyone!
This is what it looks like to give yourself to God! To live, serve, give, and love... to submit from a new heart.
Why it Matters (vv.11-14)
Romans 13:11-12 ESV
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
2 Peter 3:11 ESV
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
That Day is coming.
- How should we live now?
Romans 13:13-14 ESV
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
To be a living sacrifice
- There is death to the old man
- "Not conformed to this world..."
- There is life in the Spirit
- "Transformed by the renewal of your minds..."
This is a heart and life submitted to God, submitted to others.
And this is not easy.
- This is WAR!
As we "put on Christ..."
Ephesians 6:14-17 ESV
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
Psalm 139:23-24 ESV
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
A war we win by surrender
A war we win by dying

24th October 2023, 8.24pm (notes written all day long)
I feel so stupid re reading what I wrote the other day. I hate my voice, the way I write. My thoughts make me sick. I am so incredibly ridiculous, always complaining, always not at ease, always trying not to be an inept, always feeling guilty - guilty about feeling good, about being sad, about not being good enough, about feeling too good. Always whining.
I am detestable. It’s beyond me how everyone around me does not find me completely abhorrent. If they read this diary they probably would see how awful I am. I’m just good at filtering things out.
I always get what I want and then I end up wanting even more, it never stops.
I arrived home late, after getting off the train. I took the metro 1, the yellow line with the striped chairs, and then I walked home. I wanted to take the metro 2, but it never came. The cold air slapped me in the face when I come out of the stairs, deservedly.
-
Yesterday I went to a serrurier, a locksmith, to pick up a package. His door was broken, the door knob limp.
-
I ate some grapes today. Green grapes, always green grapes to make the novelty of of red strawberry grapes never fade, with their thick skin and sugary taste. Persimmons, left on the counter for so long you can scoop up the bright orange flesh with a spoon. Chestnut, found on the floor, in the street, fallen from the trees after the rain. Autumn is the season of sunsets, of death — but nor for me. Autumn has always been the new beginning spring promises to be. Cable knit sweaters, corduroy, soft leather. For just a few seconds I can feel a life of cottages, mushrooms, my childhood books about fairies living in the woods and witches with a greenhouse.
And then I take a step forward, I keep walking and the illusion only leaves some faint warmth, like the palest of watercolors.
-
Today I put my resentment down and stretched in the middle of the street. It’s heavy, it hurts the shoulders to carry all of these feelings. I also let go of some of my dignity. Just a pebble. I am no Atlantis, no Hercules either after all.
A few weeks ago N. texted me, multiple times, and I did not click on the blue text, I did not read any of the words. He unsent it all, and I tried ignoring it but I can’t.
Yesterday night I could not stop thinking about his texts. Some months ago he contacted me when he was drunk, he sent a lot of slurred voice recordings in a bathroom - but he did not delete them. He wanted me to reply. This time he change his mind, apparently. But I still think about those recordings from time to time, the things he told me about himself, about me, about his boyfriend and the way he treats him. They live together, and N. does not want to anymore, and his boyfriend cheated on him multiple times, and his boyfriend is simply not a good person. Yesterday night I fell asleep thinking about N.’s situation.
And today I texted him during class, between one line of notes and the other.
He replied almost immediately, I did not. I waited for the end of class, and then I waited to get to the metro, and then I waited for my friends to leave at their stops.
And then I clicked on the icon of his face. It’s a blurry selfie, he changes it more often than I do. He said everything is all the same, but that he might be moving to London next year, so things will go better.
-
I got a 15/20 on my dissertation titled «Faut-il une constitution?» and I feel like a fraud. It does not sound like a good grade, it really does not, but compared to the people coming to university with me it’s an amazing mark. They all got from 6 to 9. And I feel like a fraud because before turning it in I asked M. if he could correct my grammar - and I know my professor would have given me a much lower grade had M. not touched my text.
He says it was all me, that he just corrected some verbs and some words, that the ideas are all mine - but still, it does not feel like a victory. I told no one in class.
-c.
