Wo ist denn das Video? (Und wenn ja, wie viele?)

Eine Bekannte fragt mich: Sie habe mir doch neulich dieses Video geschickt, und das tue ihr leid, sie habe da ja noch mehr Videos mitgeschickt, und das wollte sie gar nicht. Wie könne man das denn abstellen, dass sie immer - unbeabsichtigt! - so viele Videos schicke, sie wolle doch eigentlich nur ein Video schicken! Da kämen immer so viele Videos mit, das sei ihr ganz unangenehm.

Ich verstehe zunächst ihre Frage nicht. Dann schauen wir uns an, was sie mir geschickt hat: Das war ein Link zu einem Video auf Youtube. Ich erkläre ihr, dass sie mir nur den Link zu einem Video geschickt hat und frage, ob sie in anderen Fällen vielleicht den Link zu einer Playlist geschickt habe?

Nein, sie würde nur ein Video senden wollen, aber das seien dann immer ganz viele. Wir schauen weiter, und irgendwann stelle ich fest, dass ihre Youtube-App auf dem Smartphone die (wohl Standard-)Einstellung hat, wenn ein Video beendet ist, weitere “ähnliche” Videos wiederzugeben.

Ich versuche, ihr zu erklären, dass sie gar nicht die Videos versendet, sondern nur den Link zu einem Video auf Youtube. Und dass es dann von der Einstellung auf dem Empfangsgerät abhängt, was im Anschluss daran wiedergegeben wird. Damit ist sie nur halb zufrieden, und ich merke, dass es mir nicht so richtig gelingt, den konzeptuellen Unterschied zwischen dem Versenden einer Datei und dem Versenden eines Links verständlich zu erklären.

Etwas später spreche ich mit André und Markus darüber, und mir wird noch etwas deutlicher, dass und warum auch meine naive Unterscheidung zwischen “Datei” und “Link” gar nicht richtig ist - was natürlich den ganzen Sachverhalt noch viel komplizierter macht:

André: “Wenn man ein Video per Mail verschickt, muss das ja auch noch nicht heißen, dass das Video wirklich auf den Rechner des Empfängers kommt. Mit GMail könnte ich mir auch vorstellen, dass das Video in der Cloud bleibt und bloß auf dem Rechner des Empfängers angezeigt wird. Dann schickt man eigentlich immer nur Links.”

Markus: “Wobei ja wiederum beim Anschauen eines Youtube-Videos das Video auch heruntergeladen wird. Sonst könnte man es ja nicht anschauen. Zumindest ein Teil des Videos”

André: “Ja… was immer da genau in den Browser kommt. Ist es eine gerenderte Form des Videos, oder das Video selber? Youtube konvertiert ja alle hochgeladenen Videos in ein eigenes Format. Gibt es ein Format, in dem das Video gespeichert wird, und ein anderes, in dem es angezeigt wird? Wer weiß.”

Markus: “Jedenfalls finde ich es nachvollziehbar, dass Personen Schwierigkeiten haben, das auseinanderzuhalten: Versand eines Links und einer Datei, wenn man doch das gleiche zu sehen bekommt.”

André: “Ja. Es ist echt nicht so leicht, auseinander zu halten, wo ein Foto oder ein Video eigentlich gerade "ist", weil man die Sachen, die in der Cloud sind, auch einfach so angucken kann.”

Markus: “Es wäre ja auch zu schön, wenn das egal wäre, weil immer ausreichend Bandbreite und Speicherplatz da wäre.”

Vor ein paar Tagen ist mir das passiert, vor dem sich jeder Autor fürchtet. Mir hat es bei einem Schreibprogramm (GoogleDocs) die Datei zerschossen.
