@look-at-those-niceass-rocks and I finished our watch (their first, my... eighth???) of Julie and the Phantoms the other day (*cough* over a week ago *cough*), and like the previous two times, we had some unhinged things to say about it. For now tho i will ramble about random hcs rattling around in my brain

- The valley is FULL of magic, but not alot of Magical Beings that utilize that magic. If the residents of pelican town knew more about magic, there would be alot more wizards than just. The Wizard.

- Everyone in pelican town has some kind of latent magic, or at the very least, an affinity or sensitivity to magic. I like to think that magic builds in very secluded corners of their world and the area including (and surrounding) pelican town is simply one of those places.

-(sorry, i am just obsessed with Places and Magic) I like the idea of your farmer being drawn to pelican town bc they have a bit of magic in them. The letter is just A Letter, but it is the desire to see this town that makes them leave their old life behind. I am obsessed w the idea that the magic in the farmer craves the valley bc it sees the valley as its home, and by extension, the farmer sees the valley as their home. The people of pelican town rarely leave bc the magic in them sees the valley as their home always. The biggest examples of this are Kent, Demetrius, Evelyn, Emily and Shane. The huge exceptions to this (still workin on it) are lewis and sebastian; lewis bc i see him as a normal, non-magical being trying to wrangle the weirdness of this town, and sebastian bc his feelings of isolation and not being understood propels him to crave the world outside of the valley. (That changes a bit if u befriend him/romance him)

-(shane is weird bc hes super depressed and lonely but his happiness comes from his new ‘ragtag family’ (his words) and his very Not Normal chickens. The animals of the valley love him bc he loves them and he becomes tied to the valley bc of it. Marnie has always loved the animals of the valley and some of the love they had for her definitely rubbed off onto shane, who very openly admits he loves the chickens 💙)

-I wasnt very fond of the idea of purple=magic but i think that was bc i often saw it as a way to tie-in the wizard and abigail. I am still trying to get through the friendships for everyone but rn it doesnt feel like theres any connection between them (and caroline). But. I do like the idea of odd, unnatural colors coming through bc of magic. Alex and Pierre having normal brown hair; Haley and Sam being true blondes. BUT. Shane and Jas having purple-ish hair. Emily and Caroline have blue toned hair. Even vincent have pinkish hair 🥺💖 (and dare i say….sebastian with purple/black hair like shane 👀…maybe he has more magic in him than hed like to believe). Abigail doesnt count bc from what ive seen, Caroline laments about her daughters dyed hair. “When she was younger it used to be chestnut brown” which…awww she took after her dad lol.

- LAST THING. This is not an hc i am just mad about this. I cannot believe the game doesnt allow u to befriend Marlon. What the fuck. What the fuck !!! I love him!!! I want to be friends w the chill monster slayer! Im a monster slayer too!!! Let me give him gifts !!! Fuck ! 😭😭😭💥💥💥💥 Also. I know how to write old man yaoi. My Twisted Wonderland Guest Room layout:

I got, like… two more things to make it complete for me, which is replacing the sofa with the Heartslaybul one (I am missing one (1) large gem and this game REFUSES to drop it for me, it’s been weeks 😤) and replacing the rug under the sofa with the Diasomnia one. Thank god we got the event bonus for Book 6 dropping because my thaumarks was in the TRENCHES making all this damn furniture 😭

But I want Jamil to think of Ramshackle as his new home so I work to keep my man happy! 😂

Things that rock about the Guest Room addition:

You can watch the students interact with furniture and then randomly fight each other

Building your room theme around certain characters’ dorms and/or style preferences causes them to say different stuff each time they visit

Raising your card’s level above whatever cap it is through Friendship levels

HGTV enthusiasts love playing designer (it’s me, I’m the HGTV enthusiast)

Gives you something else to work towards in between events other than mindless lesson grinding

The Crafter’s Gauntlet is a fun way to flesh out your roster since they force you to use certain characters for the battles

Easy General Mission accomplishments through the making of furniture and accumulation of Room Tokens = more gems for pulls

Things that suck about the Guest Room addition:

Placing furniture is very clunky and awkward; you can’t rotate things how you’d like all the time, there’s unavoidable dead space, and some shit just looks off-center no matter what you do

Material drop rates SUCK ASS. So, just like the stingy lesson drops

They absolutely need to label, with words, what gems drop on certain days because the color difference between Scarabia & Heartslaybul / Pomefiore & Octainville is too subtle

If you place too many of the same type of furniture down your comfort level drops, so you have to mix it up even if it’s not aesthetically pleasing to do so

Being forced to craft furniture you will never use just to raise your room rank. Materials are too scarce and thaumarks are too precious for all dat

It’s ambiguous as hell trying to figure out what actually increases the rate in which your Friendship level goes up. I only ever get “Good” with each invite no matter what I do

Overall tho, pretty fun! I want to see what other folks do with their guest rooms, so if you got a layout you’re proud of, show it to me! 😄

I like that Ryoko isn't Team Mom, she's just Yuki's Mom. I like it when characters in a fictional friendship group have individually unique and meaningful relationships like this, and aren't all thrown together into a gray sludge of "Friends".

It makes me sad when shows lose sight of the fact that friendships aren't interchangeable. John, Alice, and Tricia might all be in the same social groups but John and Alice's relationship is completely different from Alice and Tricia's. One friendship is not equal to another, and the nuances of those individual relationships bring a lot of character depth with them.

I love that Ryoko allowed Yuki to get all the way over to the microwave and open the door before stopping her. I feel like she was standing there watching Yuki slowly shamble to the microwave just... trying to process what she was seeing. "She's not. She's not. She wouldn't, right? She has to know that's not where you melt chocolate. I must be misinterpreting what I'm-- And she's opening the door NOPE NOPE PENALTY."

Well, fuck my life. The Haruhi/Kyon shipping in this show is a million times better than in Melancholy too. It's not just the Yuki/Kyon shipping. This show just... has a better understanding of how to ship characters well.

This one scene more convincingly sells the idea that Kyon's genuinely interested and entertained by Haruhi's antics than two entire seasons of Melancholy and a movie did. They're showing actual chemistry between the characters instead of telling us after-the-fact that Kyon secretly likes her I swear.

._. But Yuki deserves to be happy. This is her show. Let her have her stolen happiness.

I know the show's just doing this for lulz, but I would be willing to accept Yuki/Mikuru as a replacement ship for Yuki/Kyon. Honestly it would kill two birds with one stone: "Yuki deserves to be happy" and "Mikuru deserves better than the three godawful ships she's been saddled with."

#40: Trust Fund/Joanna Gruesome - Split 12" EP

If I make a little tally chart of when I discovered all of these songs, 2014 accounts for a full 20% of them. The reason for this is not so mysterious: after over a decade of being able to do next to nothing, I found myself suddenly able to do slightly more than next to nothing and so the era of buying less than half a dozen CDs a year suddenly fell away. I looked around music blogs and forums, I found people with (what my girlfriend calls) “cousin eardrums” on the internet and I started to build a relationship with a world outside my head for the first time in years. This EP was at the centre of what I loved about DiY indie at that time, primarily because it was the first Trust Fund record that I heard and Trust Fund remain for me the best of those bands. My capacity to talk about them has already been tested to worrying levels (there’s a very long essay I wrote about them somewhere on the internet that was referred to as my dissertation by friends), but I appreciate that my audience here is more of the “who dat?” variety, so I shall try and keep this fairly brief.

Tho the 10s are largely regarded as a musical backwater for indie, I’m tempted to think of them as a Golden Age for DiY guitar pop. Being what it was, it broke little new ground, but there was a strong sense of character in the music that made its identity feel distinct to me - maybe that’s just the zeal of the newcomer, idk. Trust Fund themselves sound a lot like American slacker rock pushed thru a UK indiepop blender: you could hear the chunky Weezer style powerchords and the more angular Pavement-type elements, but within that, there’s also Ellis Jones’s faltering, high pitched whine of a voice singing about his two favourite subjects, awkward friendship and dishonesty. At one of these two poles is “No Pressure”, an alt country daze where Jones offers a girlfriend a safe space for some sort of emotional recovery. This leads to some of his best lines - “this is not your house and you do not cut the grass” in particular captures all the care and solicitousness of making sure someone feels welcome in a difficult situation - and the song itself becomes a sombre but comforting refuge from the worst that the world has to offer. At the other is the razor sharp power pop of Scared, an absolute rush of a song but one where pace and melody tend to mask the sheer desperation of Ellis’s vocal. Lead track Reading The Wrappers is great too - (ed. makes “wind it up” gestures) - yeah, alright… (for fucks sake - ed.)

The other side of this 12” single is occupied by Joanna Gruesome, a better band than their name suggests but who are not on top form here: only the elegiac shimmer and melancholy of Coffee Implosion matches up to any of the Trust Fund tunes. That doesn’t really matter tho - four of these six songs are among the very best of their kind. While it’s a record that still stands on its merits, it’s become a time capsule for me too, a moment where I was excited by music for the first time in years and feeling like my life was, for once, heading somewhere other than indefinite illness. The illness thing didn’t pan out: I got worse again, improved more, had a breakdown somewhere in the middle and finally understood that being able to go for a walk and make my own dinner was about as good as it was likely to get. But the music is still important to me, both on this record and all the others that I discovered from 2013/14 onwards. I can’t say much has ever happened in my life - it’s largely been based around long periods of nothing at all - but this was a time when I again became a person that related to the outside world as something other than a sick body and those records were my conduit for that. Whatever it is that I’ve become now, it began with these songs.

I’ve always liked the idea of so called gods being able to be killed, and it’s something I incorporate in as many places as I can because I’m just like that XD.
