once upon a time there was a child born. it was a place far and far, at the middle of many places, in the middle of many words. her parents hoped for the redemption of their shame, for their house to flourish once more-- but with hateful claws and razor teeth, they named her unloved in the tradition of their language.
kitty is not her real name. an affectionate moniker owned as nothing more than a girl to cover up her shame. richmandyne yarrow valentine was who she was born and kitty has long forgotten it.
parents were never her true parents -- and the young valentine had learned once she belonged to no one, to nothing. fate could not be bothered with her, destiny had looked the other way in her creation. her existence could be ascribed to the 'devil' of her culture, but this fact had abruptly ceased to matter -- kitty valentine was born alone and would die alone, fundamentally, forever nothing in the cosmic everything.
glinda regalis was everything. every ounce of sunlight, every tinkling touch of laughter, every burst of warmth under the god's clawed touch was ecstasy. and kitty valentine knew, had always known, this was where her soul would lie. if she had an essence, a truth, it was glinda who could draw it out of her. the little god bowed her head to the queen once she was crowned, and kitty took up her preordained position as the regalis ruler's Destined knight.
until the knight broke. and the queen lost her forever.
the slow-churning madness, the everlasting darkness that forever feasted on the god's mind broke open, the dam flooding all she could touch. kitty had retreated to the shadows of all things, had chosen to drink deep of the corruption that had always whispered in her ear. it had become exhausting to fight it. the little god forgot the queen.
the first time she'd tried to kill her the god's hand had been stayed by its own trembling claws. love had always been her undoing, and sometimes, in rare moments, it had become her recreation.
glinda had been patient with the reckless beast kitty had become, angry and caged, furious and hollow, enraged by its own infatuation. the beast's love for the queen had become something warped like the metal of a beloved blade, but never has that blade become less beloved. memory restored and the shadow faded, but the shadow never left.
the little god had godlings of her own, three of them, and one, a daughter, had been chosen by her own violence. split from her very self, kitty's mirror, her own identical, took hold of the child and demanded she make a choice-- her daughter's life or the life of her queen. griefstricken and understanding there was no way to win, the little god had let go of her daughter -- and it was grief that killed her truly.
glinda's madness cast the darkest shade. a universe in and of itself and many others was plunged into a night that could no longer be dispelled and the queen refused to die, driven instead by all the love once felt with nowhere to go. and this was why kitty valentine was given one last task, allowed life to trade for the death of the one she held dearest.
she'll destroy everything just because she loves you god had said to her. bile rose in her throat, eroded all the outrage and made way for acidic vitriol -- how dare anyone insinuate her love was less than anything, nothing, nothing in the universe mattered more.
(the queen's throat was pliant, opened easily when trembling claws pricked a jugular and set forth crimson spilling. i waited for you, glinda had sobbed, and kitty held her as she died, i waited for you, i always knew you would come--)
god had died the same as every other body eager to relinquish blood, had tasted the same as every other chunk of meat, had been no different than any other kill. and emptiness has never found itself fulfilled -- kitty valentine is just as hollow as she was born, but perhaps she is struggling, now, to understand how her hands can do anything but enact violence, how they're anything but dripping with the blood of the one she once loved.
how can no one see she's a monster but her?

Guardian of Darkness
"When there is light, there is always the long shadow it cast. A growing void that consumes every light it could reach out. So large, that it partake on the creation of the blacken voice we know it as space. And soon, death. It too had tales of a being. The silhouette of a once devoted person who was consumed by the darkness. A blacken knight who became the harbinger of death and decay. A shadow given life by The Well of creation, for the only use to be the counter part of light. Of life. Of Destiny. To provide it temptation and choice on where the beings will go. To create thier own destiny and their own strength.
It to was given many names, different stories. But it all depictions one thing. A being of shadow with a eye fractured thanks to the conflict they had with it's counter. Dawning armor that grows crimson spikes from it's limbs, stronger than any material or metal known to man. With the cloak of shadows that even the demon lords can not obtain. A weapon that became known as Death's Scythe. And in a blacken realm, where shadows and the creatures of the darkest of night dwell. And only to reach it is within the far reaches of ones darkest thoughts. This being was given many names as well. But it all provided a singular title. The Guardian of Darkness."
I had the pleasure of working on this piece for the wonderful KatanaNature . A second piece in the series, and no less exciting. I have enjoyed playing with the gloomy setting and colors. I hope you like the final outcome.
Thank you for commissioning me!

To put all the events in a dramaturgic vision, this collection of songs is a blend of several musical moods, combining heavy ballads, Metal tracks with majestic orchestrations and instrumental parts. Lyrics are for the most part in English and a bit of French, all performed with the beguiling lyrical bass voice of Axel, in clean and screamed vocals.
And what a solemn stroke of luck master Axel is for the music of the band: All too seldom has such a noble sublime voice been carved out of such an inconceivably gigantic vocal talent with such immeasurable dedication and downright unearthly diligence!
So you can enjoy classical Symphonic Metal, Melodic Death Metal, musical, medieval pieces and even passages in the style of great masters like Bach, Mozart or even Rachmaninov!
Witness the legendary fight of Phoebus and his friends against the Beast and the vampire knights! To guide you in this quest, the master drawer Mohamed Aouamri (Sylve, Mortepierre) illustrated each chapters and gave life to this world of Fantasy and History.
LINE-UP Phoebus • Vocals Oswald Croll • Guitars, Backing Vocals Hadrian • Guitars, Backing Vocals Arkeuid • Bass, Vocals Robin Of Locksley • Drums „Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror“, Phoebus‘ first adventure with his companions, the Knights of Heliopolis, is waiting for you! Go on an epic and original musical adventure, mixing Symphonic Metal, Heroic-Fantasy and History, written by Axel de Montalembert, composed by Adrien Djouadou and performed by the one and only PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT!
FLASHBACK: PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT was born in the mind of Axel de Montalembert. Passionate of music, heroic-fantasy, esoterism and history, he created the story of Phoebus and his companions, the Knights Of Heliopolis, melting together heroic-fantasy and history.
To translate his great tale into music, he needed a composer that could write for a Metal band and a full orchestra to give to the story the epic breath it needed. That’s how he met Adrien Djouadou, a classically trained opera singer active on established stages and together, they created the whole concept of PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT.
Axel would write the lyrics and naturally, sing them and Adrien would compose the whole music, play the guitar and do the backing vocals. But PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT needed musicians, so they found a great team to play with them on this journey: Noémie Allet on the bass and vocals, Adrien Guingal on the guitar and Guillaume Remih on the drums. Each member of the band would represent a character in the story of Phoebus and his companions.
Naturally, PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT became a Symphonic Metal band with a whole conceptual and visual universe. They value quality in music, production and work invested by involved parties. PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT finds its roots in bands like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Powerwolf, Rhapsody Of Fire, Cradle Of Filth …

Dumb Idea
Tumblr media
This isn't really a spoiler for the main Dark Nights Death Metal books, but it is a spoiler for part of a one-shot tie-in that can be found in Dark Nights Death Metal: The Darkest Knight. And there's a bit of a story behind it.
In Dark Nights Death Metal, we get to see a ridiculous number of evil Batmen from the Dark Multiverse. In one of the one-shots tie-ins (Legends of the Dark Knights, I think), there's a series of short stories about the origins of some of the evil Batmen. For some reason, someone thought it would be a good idea to get Garth Ennis - creator of Preacher, The Boys, and Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe - to write one. Ennis is a notorious hater of superheroes, so he created a Batman who accidentally turned himself into a baby, seemingly as a "Screw you" to the Batman fans reading it.
Fortunately, James Tynion IV turned a negative into a positive when he had Owlman speak truth to the silly baby Batman before blowing up the world they were on in Multiverse's End.
Both stories mentioned here are from the collection Dark Nights Death Metal: The Darkest Knight.
