#i haven't gotten a copy yet but fucK it's so heartening to see the new danny phantom comic doing so well#it's literally sold out on amazon. like how???#because like.#one of the first real career goals i ever had#that was more than just small child 'i wanna be president!'#was to get good at the drawing skills i was juuust starting to acquire and go to animation school so i could reboot danny phantom someday#and i still#i still vividly remember the day i excitedly told my dad about that goal#we were at my grampa's house and i was so excited to declare my plans and dreams#and i couldn't even get the whole sentence out of my mouth before my dad shut it down hard#so like a good little girl i gave up that dream right then and there#(in front of my grandfather who had only had the luxury of starting to pursue art in his 70s)#(i really do miss my grampa. no one in this family would have had my back like him but he died long before i could know that)#and it's just. it makes me so happy to know that me giving up thay dream didn't mean that series wouldn't be brought back#that other people wanted it as badly as i did#i don't draw anymore. not really since i left college 6 years ago#too busy with work and life and i was always so mich better at writing anyway#(irony wasn't included when my dad told teenage me i should pursue a writing career and make bank writing tv scripts)#(he'd hate to see me striking right now if i WAS a tv writer lmao)#i'm happy where i'm at in life- even if none of my big dreams have ever come to fruition#there's still time for more dreams and i do have a few (like building my house and writing arena)#and in the end i'm just so happy that there are still so many people that love the series that made me who i am#and loving it enough still to bring it back new#personal

A BTAS style title card for the DP reboot/au that lives in my head rent free
if I were in charge of a DP animation reboot and I had an unlimited budget, I would make significant and meaningful style changes. The basic change: everything that happens in the 'human world' would be black and white, and only the ghosts would be in color.
for more details, keep reading!
I've been calling it the "Pleasantville AU" in my head, though it's really not an AU as much as a lore-relevant stylistic overhaul reboot.
Humans and everything in the human world is black and white; ghosts are full technicolor
Danny, as a halfa, is still mostly black and white, but his eyes are green and his skin is. Skin colored idk. (Also black sclera because it's cool shh this is my fantasy reboot au)
The more powerful a ghost is, the more colorful it is. Moreover, the most powerful ghosts are capable of changing their coloration to "hide" in the human realm
Humans can't see colors well, and most recording equipment can't "capture" the image of a ghost well. You need special equipment to see them clearly and special cameras to photograph them
Places where ghosts have had a prolonged presence or big impact start to "bleed" colors. If you get wounded by the ghost, you get splashed with color (will fade to white "if you take care of it")
The Guys In White find these colorful, ghost-touched areas and "clean"/bleach them
The longer Danny hides, the more his presence in Amity Park starts to affect things
I didn't love the "Sam is responsible for Danny getting ghost powers" storyline in the OG, so in the reboot Danny was alone when he had his accident and he didn't tell anyone. He thinks he's a straight up ghost/is becoming a ghost and will eventually become evil (in this au becoming a ghost is thought to be a long term process a la vampirism. This isn't actually the case but I love "bad scientist Fentons" so that's their prevailing theory)
(He'll tell them eventually but I love identity shenanigans so I think it's more interesting if he hides it from them for a bit while also interacting with them as Phantom on occasion)
Oh yeah, because Phantom is mostly black and white, he's the first ghost that a lot of people are able to see.
His coloration is the driving force for the Fentons to declare him "the worst ghost", because they accuse him of trying to pretend to be human.
His coloration is a big reason why other ghosts dislike/distrust him, too, because he looks too human
The Vlad is a halfa reveal happens way later and way differently in this reboot; Danny meets him and knows he's "ecto-touched", but the Vlad = Plasmius moment would have more impact if Danny has had interactions with Vlad before, imo. Anyway I have Plans(TM) for Vlad but I'll leave it at that for now😏

so invested already. if you'd be willing to give a rundown on your danny phantom rework thoughts...?
So this is a project I've been doing entirely on the side and is purely conceptual, at least for now. The majority of the art I've done for it are just Sketchbook doodles, haha. I've been calling it Phantom Redux!
Tumblr media
Phantom Redux is a complete reboot of Danny Phantom, featuring new designs, new story, old story done better, etc. The set-up for the story is the same, Danny Fenton, while messing around in his parents' ghost lab, accidentally activates the ghost portal, giving him ghost powers, but also busting the door wide open for ghosts to invade Amity Park. And so, Danny takes it upon himself to capture these ghosts and send them back to the ghost zone!
But while the set up is the same, it'd be tackling things that the show wouldn't/couldn't/did poorly, in particular it'll be extremely gay, and obviously Danny will be a trans boy. I do also plan on depicting ghosts slightly differently, while they are connected to the living they are not literally a dead person who came back with cool powers.
Tumblr media
-Sam: "Are you dead???" -Tucker: "Could you try to sound a little less excited?"
Episodes would be generally episodic but with overarching story arcs, much like in the original show, but will lean more into the fun horror side of things than in the superhero pastiche, I think we can all agree those were the least-interesting parts of the original.
This is of course all hypothetical for the moment, as the ghost boy does not yet belong to me, but Danny Phantom is the show that I think deserves a reboot the most right now (and also Gargoyles tbh,) and my reboot will be fantastic when Nickelodeon is destroyed for their crimes/I have the time to put this into motion.
That's the most basic rundown, but I'm happy to get more specific, if there's anything else you wanna know about!
Tumblr media
Danny: "Ow! Watch where you're poking!"

If I rebooted Danny Phantom part 7
(Wesley Weston edition part 3)
-Wes wouldn't be in the first half of the first season, then there'd be this episode halfway through where there's a new student from Washington. He's a pretty cool guy at first, but then he starts noticing stuff.
-Wes would notice that Danny is clearly phantom and, thinking that phantom is evil and by extension that Fenton kid must have some nefarious plan, he tries to get everyone else to see it
-As soon as Danny gets past the shock of someone finding out he starts to tease Wes infuriating him to no end, giving them a fun dynamic but Wes still wouldn't be a very big charecter, just pop up every now and then
-He's the type of charecter that has a small role until one episode he gets a whole sympathetic backstory and actually has his own little charecter arc. He still wouldn't be as big as Sam and tucker but he'd become a good friend of Danny's eventually and even stick up for him when he realizes that he's not evil
-The last thing his mom gave him was her camera, it's pretty old but it's his prized possession
- Every year on the anniversary of her death he takes it out to take pictures, otherwise he doesn't let anyone touch it
-Phantom breaks it by accident one night and Wes is devastated but he doesn't do anything. He doesn't even tell anyone Danny broke it
-He told Kyle he (Wes) broke it and won't tell anyone what's wrong
-Kyle sees Danny and recognizes him as that one kid that his brother takes a ton of pictures of so he figures maybe he knows what happened to the camera. Maybe someone stole it?
-When he explains to Danny how important the camera was and how protective Wes was of it he knew he'd fucked up
-With Tucker's help he manages to fix the camera and give it back to Wes with an apology
-Wes realizes that maybe Danny isn't evil bc he didn't have to fix it, no one even knew he broke it. So, he decides to stop trying to expose him. This would be the start of their friendship arc.

I know nickelodeon is just sitting on the IP with no plans to use it, but I wish they'd do something with Danny Phantom. I actually feel like the show could do with a slightly more serious (and i dont mean like grim dark) reboot. Something that can explore themes more than the original could. OR if not a show, I actually feel like Danny Phantom would be a great thing to make a comic book series out of. Maybe give it to IDW. Of course there's the obvious caveat of only wanting this if Butch Hartman isn't involved

So I had originally planned on doing a Danny Phantom retrospective, mostly because I’ve been watching a lot of video essays on YouTube about old media and internet personalities, and Danny Phantom was always one of those shows that I had a complex relationship with. But during my research, a simple question kept popping into my head over and over again.
What does Butch Hartman actually do?
He constantly keeps claiming that he created Danny Phantom, and a lot of people do consider Danny Phantom to be Hartman’s best show, but how involved was he?
I’m not saying Hartman just slapped his name onto a product and took all the credit for himself, as he is credited for writing, storyboarding and directing various episodes. But from all the interviews and clips I’ve seen of him, he doesn’t seem to know that much about the show’s lore or why people like the show to begin with.
For example, the show clearly establishes that there are ghosts who used to be human at one point, but Hartman has always insisted that every ghost you see in the series is a supernatural creature from an alternate dimension. And that his explanation for why some ghosts are more human looking than others is because they wanna be human? Um…..okay.
Feels odd that Hartman had a problem with the ghosts being spirits of deceased humans but he originally wanted Vlad to be a vampire.
It’s also pretty interesting how Hartman never wrote any season two episodes, as that season is when the show started to heavily incorporate elements of serialized storytelling into its main narrative. Something that was previously absent from Hartman’s other show, The Fairly Oddparents.
And yes, I am still annoyed that we never got a legit payoff to the Ring of Rage and Crown of Fire, they were clearly set up as these major plot points that were gonna be important later on, but were completely dropped entirely after Reign Storm.
Guess now is the perfect time to talk about Steve Marmel and the controversy surrounding him. Long story short, Marmel was a writer who helped develop the series. A lot of the best episodes were written by him and once he left the quality went down the shitter.
Many people have speculated that he was fired by Hartman/Nickelodeon for wanting the show to go into a more darker direction, while others claim he left due to creative differences.
None of these rumors have been confirmed by Hartman, Nickelodeon or Marmel. And as such, should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
Regardless of what you believe, you can’t deny that Marmel wasn’t influential during his time on the show. He really helped flesh out a lot of the characters and lore.
Say what you will about the Green Bay Packers jokes in Bitter Reunions, but I kinda loved that aspect of Vlad’s character. It was a nice little touch that helped him stand out from your typical Saturday morning cartoon villain.
And if I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t think Hartman could pull something like The Ultimate Enemy or Reign Storm off on his own, as he’s not that good of a writer.
Which brings me to season three, now I don’t usually like parroting out the default opinion but, season three of Danny Phantom is just…..really bad.
I’m not going to go into that much detail about season three, mostly because it’s a topic that’s been covered to death and I really don’t have anything new to bring to the table. But I will say that, if season three does anything well it’s that it showcases just how terrible of a writer Hartman actually is.
Take for example the episode Urban Jungle, Sam’s eco friendliness is taken up to eleven, to the point where she starts feeling less like a character and more of a caricature. All she does in this episode is complain about how terrible humanity is, get captured and brainwashed by the villain of the week before getting rescued by Danny in the end.
Oh, and Danny gets ice powers because…..reasons.
I genuinely do feel bad for all the Danny Phantom fans who want to see a legit continuation or reboot, I came across a ton of amazing fan art and AU stories/webcomics that are a billion times more entertaining than the shit we got in season three.
But alas, Nickelodeon has made it clear that they aren’t interested in a Danny Phantom revival/reboot, as they seem to only want comedy shows. Plus even if there was some sort of continuation, I doubt fans would support it if Hartman was heavily involved. Considering that he’s spent the last couple of years destroying any good will he had left with animation fans.
Still, while the show may never get a proper continuation or revival, it will continue to live on in fan media form.

okay so here is my very long idea for a danny phantom reboot in “brief” summary
like the original show, this show will also have a total of 3 seasons and the final season will be the series finale and it’ll work out like this
season 1:
when danny first gets his powers, he’s going to be struggling with using them properly throughout the whole season and it wont be until the end of this season that he actually gets a grip on how to properly use all of his main ghost powers (the ones that will be used in almost every episode, the basic ones like flight, invisibility, walking through walls, etc). when he went into the portal because of sam daring him to, sam then activated the portal while he was inside which is what caused him to gain his powers. she also unleashed ghosts into the world by doing this and so rather than having reoccurring ghost villains, this season will focus on having one-off “ghost of the week” type episodes with 45-minute episodes to really be able to flesh out their character, how they died and how it relates to their power, what they want and the unfinished business they have
the way the ghosts work will essentially be that their more like antagonists than proper villains but once in a while you will get actual ghost villains and there is no redemption arc for them, there is no realization of “oh actually this ghost isn’t bad”, no they’re a threat and thats that. they need to go. they’re sent into the portable ghost portal and none of them really knows what happens after that, but they’re already dead, so they’re not concerned about killing them by doing this
throughout this “ghost of the week” thing, danny learning to use his powers, and also random high school and teenage problems that will crop up within the season, danny fucks up a lot and causes damages all around town and essentially becomes a public enemy which he’s understandably angry about because hes trying to help the town. his parents are also trying to help the town in their own way and they get called in to investigate ghostbuster style, dragging jazz along with them. danny overhears where ghosts are and gets his own team together to deal with things his way meanwhile. anyway, somewhere during this mess, he does in fact meet vlad and that pretty much goes the way it does in the show with some changes to fit what happens next and vlad is out to kill him by the end of that (like he actually wants him dead) and danny also ruins valerie’s rich life and then starts the saga of vlad (in his ghost form) enlisting valerie to kill danny. meanwhile danny, in his human form, starts dating valerie and they grow close and at the end of the season, valerie gives up her hunt when she realizes that danny is in fact the phantom and so she tells vlad, in person, that he wants nothing to do with him or any of this and she quits, returning all of her ghost fighting gear. vlad gets upset and decides that it was dumb of him to try and get a teenage girl to do his job for him and heads out to try and take down danny himself and that is the end of the season
season 2:
vlad is now the main villian and this season will start with vlad going out of his way to try and kill danny and danny escapes this and he goes to sam and tucker, and this is when he finally reveals the complicated history between vlad and him and how it ties back to his parents because up until this point he had been keeping it a secret from them and he didn’t really think it mattered all that much since he was dealing with a whole bunch of other shit and vlad had been working through valerie anyway, so he didn’t even know. this felt like the least of his problems in comparison at the time, but he realizes that he needs sam and tucker to be on the same page as him so now all three of them know
when they come up with a plan they end up considering somehow sending vlad to the ghost realm and having him remain trapped there as that is what has worked with every other ghost they’ve needed to get rid of and every ghost that has been sent back there hasn’t been able to return, so naturally, sending vlad there seems like a good idea, but they just need vlad to get into a position in which they’re able to do that, so that’s the plan for this season and the ultimate goal
somewhere during the first half of the season, valerie can’t stand keeping secrets anymore and so she reveals to danny that she knows that he’s the phantom. when asked how she knows, she admits to having stalked him while trying to kill him with the help of another ghost as revenge for what happened with her and her father. through context clues, danny realizes that valerie is talking about vlad and becomes unsure whether he can even trust her at all. valerie swears that she has nothing to do with vlad anymore, but danny’s too shocked and upset by all of this to take her at her word, and so he breaks up with her. from the sidelines, she continues to try and help him in any way she can, secretly pointing him in the right direction when it comes to the ghost of the week they need to take down (during episodes that focus on that, but there will be less of that during this season). tucker and sam don’t find out the reason why they break up, but when tucker catches valerie trying to help out danny, he quickly realizes that he knows and valerie vaguely tells him that she fucked up and danny doesn’t trust her but that she still wants to help. tucker keeps her secret and it makes it easier for her to help because he’s able to pass on her information to the others, but sam begins to grow suspicious of tucker suddenly becoming particularly good at catching the little clues in situations, but she only vaguely makes mention towards something going on. tucker pretends to have no idea what she’s talking about and danny is oblivious to all of it. valerie and tucker grow close as friends during this time as they share the same sense of humor and are often making jokes
throughout this season, danny is met with powers that vlad has and that he himself doesn’t, but finds out with sam’s help that he’s actually able to access all of these powers too, and so there’s moments of the two of them getting together and him practicing these various powers (such as the ghostly wail and ice breath, both of which he sees vlad use)
towards the end of the season, tucker breaks down (sam doesn’t even do that much, but the pressure is getting to him and he hates lying to his friends) and admits that he’s been getting his information from valerie and sam is excited over the fact that she was right about something going on. with the realization that valerie has been continuing to help them behind the scenes, danny goes to talk to her one-on-one and the two have a discussion in which they lay all of their cards down on the table, ultimately agreeing that valerie is a valuable part of this group and she helped a lot with taking down ghosts, so she would be a valuable asset to their team. danny, despite still not fully trusting her, is okay with her rejoining the group, this time as a fellow ghost hunter, and throughout their working together, it’s evident that danny still loves her despite the lack of trust, but he slowly starts to trust her again and it’s clear they both love each other by the end of the season, but they never get the chance to officially get back into a relationship because they’re dealing with vlad. sam and tucker also never discover the real things that went on between danny and valerie, but they both agree to keep it between themselves and they’re okay with that and neither sam nor tucker push for extra information
speaking of vlad, during the final battle, sam (whos in charge of the ghost portal and is the one to send the ghosts back into the ghost realm) goes to send vlad to this ghost realm too but danny sees that vlad is about to dodge it once again and after so many failed attempts, he can’t stand to see another one, and so he pushes vlad into the light of the portal, sending both vlad and himself into the ghost realm, leaving sam, valerie, and tucker confused and shocked about what just happened
season 3:
sam, valerie, and tucker are devastated by the loss of danny and the people in his life (family, teachers, classmates, etc.) believe that he’s dead because the story that the three friends gave everyone was that he was attacked by a ghost (which is true) and that both him and the ghost disappeared together (which is also true), leading the assumption to be that he was killed by a ghost. valerie is particularly hung up on his death and temporarily leaves the group, becoming somewhat of a loner during the first half of this season but sam and tucker make a point to check in on her whenever they can. neither sam nor tucker believe that danny is dead, and even if he were, they still have work to do, tracking down the rest of the ghosts that are still out and about from when the portal was originally opened and danny became half-ghost. it’s a lot harder to do because they neither have danny’s help nor valerie’s, but there’s only a few more ghosts and they track all of them down in the end. sam becomes a lot harsher towards the ghosts during this and she’s also dealing with a lot of guilt because the only reason all of this happened was because she was playing what she thought was a harmless prank, trying to scare danny and, by extension, tucker. tucker tries to be more kind towards them knowing most aren’t actually evil, providing that balance
after they catch the final ghost and no other ghosts seem to be around anymore, sam is messing about with the ghost portal, wishing she could go after danny somehow. while it’s on, she hears ghostly wails and she realizes then that the ghosts in this portal are still able to be reached and it doesn’t in fact get rid of ghosts completely and it just sends them to another world that is still accessible, which leads her to the conclusion that danny, and by extension, vlad, might still be alive. she takes the information to valerie first with her logic being that it would be something that would knock valerie out of her funk. valerie is hopeful but skeptical at the same time. she goes forward with caution and they go to tucker next, which brings them to visiting the large portal in the basement of danny’s parents’ house
after messing about with that, they take a risk and, using the equipment in the basement, valerie and sam go into the portal fully suited up, attached with tethers so they’re able to be reeled back in by tucker who remains outside and keeps watch. the idea of there being a whole world there turns out to be correct, and with that information, they leave because there isn’t much exploring they can do. they know no one who knows anything about the ghost realm and asking danny’s parents only goes so far because they still don’t have information about what to do, but then they end up at vlad’s mansion and go through his things and there they discover that vlad actually knows about the ghost realm. see, vlad takes notes on his ghostly endeavors and powers and all that and he genuinely does research and stuff and that’s what makes him so powerful and there’s going to be a lot of foreshadowing to this and his work being shown in small ways
anyway, via the notes and stuff, they figure out how to use the small portal more effectively and are able to use it to open up the portal to specific places within the ghost realm and vlad knows about this because vlad’s research and danny’s parents’ research overlaps a lot and so vlad essentially knows how to work danny’s parents’ equipment but better. because it’s sam who has the most experience with the ghost portal and neither tucker nor valerie ever touched it, it’s sam who reluctantly stays behind and tucker and valerie go into the ghost realm, now with that ghost car thing they have in the show and ear pieces for communication between all three of them, and tucker using a gps to let sam know where exactly they are and sam using the gps information to figure out how it relates to the ghost portal
they eventually do find danny and vlad and realize that the two of them have been essentially playing a game of cat and mouse all throughout the season, and from here the episodes will focus on that part of the plot before going back to the present where valerie and tucker stumble upon danny and vlad and get in the way of the current fight. after another battle there, danny, valerie, and tucker temporarily escape, but when they find their way to the portal that sam has opened, vlad pushes them out of the way and tries to get through the portal himself. just as he’s in the middle of getting through, sam, in a panic, breaks the portal to stop vlad from coming into the human world, also cutting off the way for her friends back. but that leaves them with the only other portal and that is the one in danny’s parents’ basement. so sam races to the house, figures out, based on the new information she has, where exactly this portal opens up to, and when they eventually get on the same page, they coordinate and sam activates the portal just in time for tucker and valerie to get through, followed by danny, but danny, while inside of the portal, starts messing with the inside of it using his powers, essentially destroying it from the inside and causing it to blow up before vlad can come through
it works, but what they discover is danny, in fact, did die when he entered the ghost realm, unprotected with suits the way valerie, sam, and tucker had been when they entered, and he doesn’t have the power to turn into a human again. he is a full ghost. that realization interrupts their celebration of being reunited. but then sam has an idea, remembering that switching on the portal while danny was inside of it caused him to become half ghost, so maybe repeating that would reverse the process. she’s right because they do exactly that and it does, in fact, reverse the process. they rebuild the machine using vlad’s blueprints (blueprints he actually stole from danny’s parents’). tucker does most of the building. going through with this plan causes danny to seemingly become a full human. people celebrate because he’s alive and he and valerie finally get together again, and one of the final scenes of the season and the whole series it’s shown that the portal, since it’s been rebuilt, is able to be accessed by vlad once again, who has memorized his own notes, but when he arrives at the portal, before he can get through, he’s blocked by angry ghosts who had been in the line of fire during all his battles with danny, and since danny isn’t there, it’s vlad who faces the consequences. meanwhile, in the other final scene, danny is shown to have actually retained some small ghost powers, so he’s still not fully human. he’s about to go to bed and when he switches off his lamp, his eyes glow green in the dark. whatever the ghost portal did to him was ultimately irreversible and he’s never going to be fully human, fully alive

do you have any favorite dp or young justice fics you would recommend to your readership? or even fics outside of those two fandoms.
thank you! deathly weapons is one of my favorite things to read- and i especially love reading your meta on the subject- so anything you’ve read that you think is great/ has an interesting premise would be cool to see.
(Young Justice: Deathly Weapons)
💜🤍🖤 Thank you as well!
I’m always astounded and delighted when people tell me they're rereading Deathly Weapons or anything else I wrote.  To me, one of the elements of a good story is it being something that you can return to, and it’s lovely to hear that I’m doing something right on that front.
(Also I’m just so humbled that you would give my story your time like that.  I put a fair bit of my own time into Deathly Weapons, but that’s still a little piece of your life in return and it’s just… amazing.)
For me writing and meta are things that kind of ouroboros together.  I tend to engage with stories in a very inquisitive/ interrogative way - I want to understand the characters/ events/ world it’s trying to create as well as the mechanics behind the curtain - and I have a special place in my heart for stories that were constructed with enough thought to reward that kind of curiosity.  Which then reflects in my own writing and the behind-the-scenes planning work I do to make sure things hold up to inspection by other puzzlers.
3WD's Meta Collection
Danny Phantom Maddie & Jack | Vlad | Tucker | The trouble with Sam (+ follow ups) The Asexual Appeal | Reboot Thoughts | Ageswap AU
Young Justice Season 1 (and also DW) Let’s Analyse the Light | A Different Take on Martian Bigotry
Actually Critical YJ Analyses Masterpost | Invasion: a Detailed Dissection | Antithesis of Heroism (Bonus Rhyme)
And now…
Fanfic Recommendations
This one is actually a bit of a challenge for me because I consume media (and analysis) quite widely across a lot of fandoms.  I tend to draw eclectic inspiration from my whole ‘source-pool’ and its meta-patterns, so it’s hard for me to point to any one thing and say: ‘that specifically inspired part of DW’.
It’s also a little tricky because Deathly Weapons was partly inspired by me having some specific itches that I couldn’t find any stories to scratch. “People won't write the books I want, so I have to do it for myself” and so on and so forth. If you would like to make any recs based on DW then please do so, I would love to see them.
That said, my FFN Favourites and AO3 Bookmarks double as general recs lists - I tend to use my bookmarks/faves as quick-access for stories I want to revisit, so you can take anything on there as something I would potentially recommend to other people.
What I’d like to do now is give a more specific list of stories that are somewhat DW-adjacent or are doing interesting things with their premise/execution/characterisation:
Danny Phantom
Alibi (FFN) by MyAibou Gen | Complete | Post series (no PP) He was Dash Baxter. Football star. King of Casper High. The world was supposed to have been his oyster for at least another decade. So how did he end up in the basement lab of FentonWorks working for the dad of the kid he used to beat up in high school? And how far would he stick his neck out to protect that kid and whatever secret he was hiding from the government?
A Ghost Story (FFN) by Cordria Gen | Complete | Slowburn mystery AU Maddie finds a strange toy airplane in a field, and it leads her to learning some very interesting things about her family.
You know how I said I can’t usually point to something as direct inspiration for DW?  This is one of the exceptions: Maddie’s realisation very much inspired Robin’s similar one in CH12: Answers.
What Little Girls are Made Of (AO3) by Haiju Gen | Complete | Dani-centric reveal fic Phantom and his younger double save Amity Park from a monstrous ghost, nearly destroying themselves in the process. The Fentons have always hunted ghosts; now it's time to save one.
Young Justice
Before we begin, I would like to share this AO3 filter I use for YJ fics published pre-2019.  It won’t pick up any still-updating fics or older fics that might have migrated to AO3 since, but if you want to revisit what the fandom felt like before the Fire Nation attacked then this will come pretty close.
Age of Heroes (AO3) by VelkynKarma Gen | Complete | Zombie Apocalypse AU The apocalypse has come and gone and the Age of Heroes is long since over. There’s not much left to live for, but Wally’s never been one to give up without trying, and maybe there are still a few miracles—and heroes—left in the world.
The Fedora Verse  (AO3) by itsxandy Gen | Series | Complete | Villain!Wally Elseworld Wally West is the newest, fastest thief in Central City. His biggest offense so far? Making crime look this good.
No One Said Flying Was Easy (AO3) by Wrtrmd2 Gen | Complete | Robin origin story Eight year old Richard Grayson has just watched his parents fall to their deaths. Shoutout to this as the first proper fanfiction I ever read and the one that started me on the path into fandom.  If you’re wondering where ThreeWaysDivided began, you can look here.  (I ask that you not hold it against them: they knew not what would happen and no doubt meant well).
Unfair Justice (FFN) by Daruku Janubu  DP x YJ | Gen | Discontinued |CW: Post-dissection fic Within the cargo box of a missing truck, the team found something that would redefine their view on justice. For sometimes, believing you are doing what is right makes innocent people suffer; and sometimes, saving people's lives is not enough to make you their hero.
Not the first YJ x DP fic I ever read but this is the first one I remember really sticking with me.  Warning for heavy content but lovely style.  Also, coincidentally, by the artist who drew the cover which first enticed me into checking out Turning Tables.  Because life, like fic, is sometimes very well written.
The Heart of a Hero (FFN) by Rookey DP x YJ | Gen | Hiatus/ Discontinued | Post TUE AU With the whole world blaming him for an accident that killed thousands, Danny Fenton finds himself living day-to-day in a rather peaceful city he thought to be widely overlooked by the Justice League. Developmental Milestones (AO3) by audreycritter Batman (comics) | Gen | Complete | OC Centric Dr. Kiran Devabhaktuni is a neurosurgeon. He's the neurosurgeon that cut a tumor out of Bruce Wayne's skull. At first, Dev was just coming around for tea with Alfred. But somehow he's now working as the doctor for the Wayne Family. And the Wayne family? Also the Batman Family.
I don’t usually recommend OC-centric fics but Dev is one of the best support characters I have ever encountered.  10/10 very good Batdoctor.
Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach (AO3) by Nnm Good Omens (TV) | Gen | Complete As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. At first glance, she paid attention to the following: --His clothing was expensive and stylish; --He wore very strange but noticeable cologne; --His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;” --He looked angry; --He was wearing sunglasses. What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?
Other media recs
Going to finish off with a little tangent (as is my wont).  Sometimes I get the sense that Deathly Weapons is built a little different from the average crossover fic, and I think part of it is that I draw a fair bit of inspiration and stylistic influence from traditionally published media across a bunch of genres.  Here are a few of those:
Works that directly influenced Deathly Weapons
The Millennium Trilogy Book Series | Mystery/ Modern Noir | Trilogy | Complete | CW: MA15+ Millennium publisher Mikael Blomkvist has made his reputation exposing corrupt establishment figures.  Enigmatic delinquent security specialist Lisbeth Salander is a genius computer hacker who tolerates no restrictions placed on her by individuals, society or the law. They were men who hated women, and she was the woman who hates men who hate women.
This is one of my favourite mystery/ crime series and provided a fair amount of inspiration for DW in terms of structural, tonal and stylistic elements (especially in chapters like the Prologue and Phenomenon).  People familiar with this series might recognise some direct stylistic homages in future chapters. Trigger warning:  This series deals heavily in subjects of bigotry (especially misogyny), abuse (personal, sexual and institutional) and violence against women, and includes explicit depictions and discussions.  MA15+, reader discretion is advised.
The Kingkiller Chronicles Book Series | Fantasy | Trilogy | Incomplete (2/3 Published) I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me
One of my favourite fantasy series, and a big inspiration in terms of prose and style as well as some character dynamics.  Fans may recognise direct homages in some of DW’s chapter titles, such as Roads to Safe Places and Ill-Lit Ships.
The Book Thief Book | Historical Fiction | CW: War, Nazism/ Antisemitism, Death It’s just a small story really, about, among other things: a girl; some words; an accordionist; some fanatical Germans; a Jewish fist-fighter; and quite a lot of thievery. I saw the book thief three times.
This book has my all-time favourite prose in terms of lyricism and imagery, as well as its ability to speak to loss and find beauty in the human condition even under horrific circumstances.  I sometimes re-read it as part of preparation for writing emotionally heavy chapters like Roads to Safe Places, and fans might recognise some direct stylistic homages.
Avatar: The Last Airbender TV Series (Animated) | Fantasy/ Martial Arts In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world.
What can I say about A:TLA that hasn’t already been said by a million other writers and story analysts?  I certainly took some structural and emotional cues from this show and the discussions around it when planning DW’s overarching story.
Other ones you might like
I’m going to bundle Psychonauts 2, Leverage and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse together as I have discussed them at length in another recommendation post but if you enjoyed any of the story flavours in Young Justice Season 1 then these will probably scratch some similar itches.
If you like young adult spy stories that are played more for tension/ intrigue than fantasy then you may enjoy the Alex Rider book series.  I reread the first book, Stormbreaker, while working on the last third of the Black Gold mission.
The Bartimaeus Sequence is a very entertaining series of YA Urban Fantasy political intrigues featuring magic and demons, narrated mostly by a djinn who has some pointed comments to make about humanity.   Those who like their Urban Fantasy with intrigue/ crime elements, villain protagonists and/or banter may also like the Artemis Fowl series (YMMV on the last 2 books, which were written later and somewhat divisive for their shift in style and focus).
Speaking of morally ambiguous intrigue-heavy Urban Fantasy, the Death Note manga is a fun cat-and-mouse murder-thriller between two ruthless strategists.
Fullmetal Alchemist is another deservedly well-renowned modern fantasy manga with mystery/ political intrigue elements, which has some broad-strokes overlaps with A:TLA in terms of structure, tone and general thesis on humanity.
Spiritfarer is a cozy indie management game about dying.  This might seem like a bit of a dark horse offering but a major component of DW Arc II’s planned main character thread is about the journey through (and specificity of) grief.  If that is something you enjoy then Spiritfarer is a concentrated dose of that in an exceptionally executed, insightful, gentle and touching form, with a gorgeous soundtrack.
Another dark horse offering coming in to land (heh) is Air Crash Investigations (also known as Mayday: Air Disaster), a documentary series about aviation forensics.  As discussed here, it’s a very good example of fair-mystery style investigative storytelling grounded in human tragedy - especially from Season 11 onwards.  Fair warning: if you have issues with planes or flying then you may want to tread carefully here.
And with that I think we’ll stop for now.  Hope you find something you like in the list.  Please feel free to add on any recs of your own!

Welcome to the Thanatology Anthology, Danny Phantom AU/Rewrite FAQ THREAD--
With me, your host, theplanetprince.
SO, I suppose the first question should be--
Q: What is the Thanatology Anthology?
A: The Thanatology Anthology is a series of fics/art made by me, theplanetprince, based around the 2004 nickelodeon superhero Paranormal SciFi cartoon Danny Phantom.
Simply put it's the name for how I would reboot the show. Including designs of certain characters, characterization, aspects of world-building, redos of moments in the show, etc. Truthfully, told I'm unsure what label to put my series of fixes and nitpicks under-- I've heard some people call it an outright rewrite/reboot of the continuity which I'm more willing to agree with.
Although I am borrowing a lot of aspects from certain aus, ecto-hunger, the core stuff, though they don't really bare a lot of resemblance to the original material or I simply can't find sources to double check if I'm getting all the details right. There are a lot of differences from the canon that I'm incorporating that some people might want to borrow and use for their own writing like for example Danielle (AKA Ellie) being Danny's future daughter rather than a clone. I guess I use the au label as well, in case people like my ideas enough to use.
I'm probably making it sound a bit more complicated than it actually is, but the idea is that I'm rewriting the show from the perspective of an older fan influenced by horror movies who wants to give the characters a bit more nuance and life.
Q: Okay, but what does 'Thanatology Anthology' mean though?
A: Ah, Thanatology is a word that comes from Thanatos IE the greek spirit of Death. Thanatology means the Study of Death. I thought I was clever. A few other work-shopped titles were "In the midst of our lives we die." "Pine box parables" "Six Feet Shallow" and "Death via Misadventure"
Q: When does this rewrite take place?
A: It can really be whenever you want it to be, but I've always shot for the late 90s, or early 2000s.
Q: Do I have to read these in order?
A: I mean, I'm not writing it in order! I'm writing the story as it comes to me. One piece might take place in the character's Freshman year and the very next I release might be their Junior year. I've done my best so far to cobble together some kind of order as well as catagerize stories via the series function on AO3 by the character arcs. Like for example Wes's arc is under the series label "That Messed up Thing That Happened To Wes When He Was A Kid." Each story in that series is ordered by every appearance of Wes that pertains to his character arc. You don't have to read these stories in order if you don't want to! I'll try to put enough context in each piece to make it approachable.
First Year (Freshman):
Amity Park Anomalies
Cherry Flavored
Second Year (Sophmore):
Pick Your Poison
Schrodinger’s Adolescent
Q: You said you were making changes to the canon, what kind of changes are there going to be? What are you keeping? What are you mixing around?
A: For the most part the concept is still the same, Half-Dead teen antics. ✨Now gayer✨
I'm mostly removing world-building concepts that no longer mesh with how I think the story will flow. I'm mostly trying to rework the appearances of the Medieval Ghosts Eudora and Aragorn. That is strictly a personal preference of mine, I just don't find high fantasy concepts that interesting-- and they're kind of confusing when you open them up in a more SciFi setting like Amity Park. It feels more realistic for aliens to mesh into the setting than medieval ghosts/dragons. I probably won't be including the likes of Pariah Dark either. However, I do have plans for the Fright Knight that I hope people will find interesting. The furthest back in time in setting I'll go is probably to the witch trial days because I find that setting is not only easier to write for, for my skill set, I just find folksy/witch horror oodles more fascinating. Also with the villain set, I wanted to incorporate more Guys in White lore and more original ghost hunters. Making the humans in Amity Park just as threatening as the ghost threats. I'm putting more of an emphasis on technology, ghost weapons, and characters versus high fantasy elements.
Q: With characterization, how do you plan to change that?
A: Truthfully, I don't plan on changing much except fulfilling character arcs to iron out the main character's flaws from the original run of the show. It never felt like they grew or evolved much beyond simplistic stereotypes. I plan on getting into the heads of our teenage protagonists to really bring out their best and worst aspects so they can grow. Not to mention conclude Valerie Gray's arc from the original run-- as well, as giving the fan-created character Wes Weston a villain arc in tandem.
Q: What Ships are endgame?
A: TeddyGhost. I wish I could be more blunt about it (LMAO)
but Teddyghost or some poly quartet of the Main Trio + Dash. This started with Schrodinger's adolescent a Danny/Dash fic, and I would like to keep it that way. But I promise not every fic in this series will be centered around a romantic pairing. Some of them will just be good, clean, bad one liners and fights. Other ships that will probably get some spotlight are VeggieBurger (Sam/Tucker) and PunkPoet (Ember/Ghostwriter). I'm not too sure what the official name decided on Val/Wes is but DeceasedDesist is my personal label for it haha.
Q: I want to help/I want chapters and releases to come out faster-- Where can I find more stuff?
A: I'll be real with you, I am just one person and I am just making it up as I go along! But if you would like to help contribute, maybe consider checking out the stories I do have on my AO3, Under the Thanatology Anthology Series. What really helps motivate any author is comments and asks. Share my work! I don't mind. But as long as there's still work to be done I'll be here doing it.

this is a stress dream i had about being a showrunner.
had a dream the other day that i got the go-ahead to produce my danny phantom reboot (i have /so/ much written for it. hardly any of it is polished enough for ao3 and probably never will be). i was thrilled but then started worrying about potential shipping wars in fandom, particularly bc i'd planned on canonically pairing sam/tucker (yes, it wasn't a popular ship in the original, but i think it's really great and has parallels w the maddie-jack-vlad thing that work rly well thematically) and leaning on danny/val will-they-won't-they but ultimately leaving them open-ended.
but then i remembered the misogynoir common to fandom spaces and started worrying about people dismissing valerie (MY FAVORITE CHARACTER. MY EXCELLENT GIRL >8C ) so they could ship danny w some white guy background character. obvi they wouldn't go for danny/tucker (despite being VERY sweet) bc tucker's black, and they wouldn't go for sam bc she's a woman, so i was like well who on earth could they ship him with? haha, dash? before remembering that oh yeah, they do that now, even without dash's gayness being canonized (which it eventually would be in my version).
anyways i was stressing about that and trying to find a way to avoid that outcome before remembering that even before dash, they'd probably start shipping danny with sidney pointdexter. this was so unexpectedly likely that i immediately woke tf up

Sam seemed to always like things because they were the opposite of what she was "supposed" to like, which makes her just as shallow as she thought Paulina was. Her first quote in the show is "Sorry Mr Fenton, I used to be into ghosts but they're so mainstream now. They're like cellphones." When Danny and Tucker tried to help her with the gorilla, she snuck a photo of them to use as blackmail. The only thing about her character that seems sincere is her veganism but she takes it too far and tries to force it on other people.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
sam is what happens when someone tries to write a goth/punk and just fucks up like, really bad, bc they fundamentally misunderstand what a goth/punk is and also refuse to see the culture beyond what is literally on the surface. taking sam, who should by all means a political activist who cares about empowering other people, and turning her into That(TM) is like... exactly what a shitty parent thinks is going on inside a teen’s head. sam isnt written like a person shes written like someone who thinks they know a person just by looking at them.
she also contributes to a phenomenon ive documented in my own life that im calling “pinkhating” which is when the only competent or main female characters actively reject all forms of femininity in their life like, violently, and where all the female characters who wear pink or have skirts or w/e are shallow mean girls. characters like sam were the reason i grew up refusing to touch the color pink and thinking little of girls who wanted dates to prom which is just. so toxic? like if you dont want to be a horrendous mean girl you cant like anything that could possibly be confused with femininity. you cant play a girly instrument or join the cheer team or like sparkly dresses cause that makes you inherently a bad person bc only bad characters do that stuff and idk im rambling now and sam wasnt even one of the characters i encountered in my youth that did this but like.... YIKES huh? shes a caricature that inspires women on women violence
also if sam was as radical as she says she is she wouldnt even be vegan she would have personally killed j*ff bez*s
