Mocha Choco Latte: A KiriBaku fanfic
My first MHA fic, and it’s going to be a multi-chapter KiriBaku one! A special thank you to my lovely wives @wingsonghalo and @ittybittytoostormy, and my dear friend @musics-lifes-record. This insanity wouldn't have been possible without your constant encouragement. A special thank you to Wing for helping me with edits <3 I love you lots, babe Title: Mocha Choco Latte Pairing: Kirishima/Bakugou (with background Izuku/Ochacco) Rating: T, mostly for language  Wordcount for chatper 1: 3,039 Summary: Katsuki hadn't anticipated spending his senior year of University working at a cafe, but who was he to complain when it paid the bills? Besides, what could be the worst thing that could happen? Also available on: AO3
Chapter 1: Caramel Mocha Frappuccino
If there was one thing that Bakugou Katsuki despised, it was people. Specifically, idiotic people. Like the ones who came in with a stupidly complex order that he had to repeat back twice to make sure he got each and every instruction right. Or the ones who would watch him make their drink, and the moment he would finish it, they would mention that they needed a milk alternative because god forbid they say something when ordering, or when they saw him grab the container of milk. And don’t even get him started on having to take their food orders; that was a new level of idiocy he hadn’t believed could be possible. Whoever said the customer is always right should be kicked in the face. He swore that this cafe was a beacon for idiots, and here he was, front and center, having to cater to their every whim.
“Kacchan, you’re scaring the customers again,” Midoriya Izuku commented as he approached the register to clock in.
“Can it, nerd. It’s not my fault that some people can’t get their order right the first time they order it,” he grouched, throwing a glare at the woman at the end of the counter who was typing away at her phone, her foot tapping impatiently as she waited for him to give her her drink.
“Still, you can try to be nicer to the customers. You are the cashier, after all.”
“And whose fault is that? I was perfectly happy being the cook until you fumbled because you were geeking out and spilled hot coffee all over the CEO of Nighteye Records.”
“Oh come on. I’ve apologized for that enough. You know I didn’t mean to! I just can’t help getting excited when I meet celebrities,” he complained as he shrugged on his apron.
“You’re lucky he didn’t try to get you fired, dumbass,” he scoffed, eyes rolling. He grabbed the cup from the steamer, the extra hot almond milk frothing, and quickly poured it into the to-go cup, mixing it in with the mocha syrup and the three decaf espresso shots, before popping a lid on the cup because heaven forbid he make the mistake of adding the whipped cream.
“Here,” he said, placing the drink on the edge of the counter aggressively. The woman huffed, throwing her phone in her purse before she scooped the cup up.
“About time. And would it kill you to be a little more appreciative of your customers? After all, you were the one who messed up my order in the first place. I can just take my business elsewhere, you know?” The challenging smirk she wore as she took a sip of her drink made Katsuki’s blood boil.
“Alright, listen here you b-”
“We are so sorry about the mistake! Please, have this cookie on the house!” Izuku interjected quickly, forcing himself between the seething Katsuki and the lady, thrusting a pastry bag in her direction.
“Well, at least ONE of you has manners. Thank you.” She snatched the bag out of his hand and stomped out of the store. Katsuki was fuming; how DARE she treat him like he was the idiot when she was the one who couldn’t get off her phone for more than five seconds to order her damn drink with the proper milk? He hoped she enjoyed the word “KAREN” scrawled across her cup. He turned toward Izuku, eyes narrowing.
“Quit it, Deku. I had that under control.” Izuku gulped, taking a step back from Katsuki, throwing his hands up in front of him in defense.
“You were about to call her a bitch, Kacchan. I had to do something. Sato’s told you if he gets any more complaints about you being rude to the customers, he’ll have to fire you.” Katsuki sighed, shoulders sagging as he realized just how right his friend was. He couldn’t afford to get himself fired, not with rent coming up soon. He was sure that Deku would help him out if that did happen, but damnit, his pride wouldn’t allow freaking Deku of all people to be the one to help him out of a bind like that, even if he was his roommate.
“Whatever. Anyway, Batteries for Brains dipped early, so I’m glad you showed up. Wasn’t looking forward to trying to run both the line and the register on my own. He should be lucky that all the orders so far have been for drinks and pastries, otherwise I’d have to kill him.”
“Kaminari’s a good guy. He probably had a very valid reason for leaving early,” Izuku said, heading toward the kitchen.
“Hopefully to tutoring. That guy’s math is atrocious,” he griped, counting the drawer down for shift change. “Oh yeah, pastry girl asked about you,” he called over his shoulder, smirking as he heard Deku run into the door frame, a muffled swear falling from him.
“U-Uraraka? What did she have to say?” he asked nervously, rubbing the red spot on his forehead.
“Wanted to know what you were up to this weekend. Told her to ask you herself.”
“Kacchan! That’s so rude!” Izuku whined, grabbing the pickup order ticket that printed off, scanning over it before grabbing one of the to-go cups to scrawl the instructions on it.
“What? I gave her your number, you moron. I’m not that heartless.” He finished counting down the drawer, noting that that idiot Kaminari short changed him, and took the cup from Izuku, whose face was as red as one of Sato’s cherry danishes.
“W-why would you do that?” he stammered, grabbing the next ticket and moving to the pastry case.
“Because clearly you’re not going to be the one to make the first move. You’ve been pining over her like an idiot since we first started here. I still can’t believe she caught you when you tripped on that drink that you spilled. You could barely stutter out the words ‘thank you’; do you really think I expect you to be able to ask her out?”
“I guess you’re right,” he sighed. “Thanks for having my back, Kacchan.”
“It’s whatever. You owe me one,” Katsuki grunted out as he sprayed the whipped cream on top of the drink before fitting the lid on it snugly. He placed the finished drink next to the pastry bag on the pick up rack and went for the next order. “Here, this one needs actual food. Get out of my space, loser.” Izuku took the ticket with a smile and went to the small kitchen, humming as he got to work.
Time passed idly, customers trickling in—some passing through for pick up, others dining in—and Bakugou was counting down the minutes until he was off. The dinner rush had come and gone, leaving the two to focus on the pre-closing procedures in between orders. Which left Katsuki with time to let his mind wander.
Working in a cafe wasn’t how he anticipated his senior year of university going, but it paid the bills. The place had a nice homey quality to it—the mismatched chairs and tables scattered about the dining area paired with various paintings and prints from local artists really made the ambiance. There was a small section by the register that displayed various knick knacks made in the community that were for sale, though Katsuki hated dealing with those purchases since there was a lot of paperwork involved to make sure that the right artist got their money. The real money maker of the cafe laid in the pastry case, though. Sato’s confections were famous throughout Akihabara; many locals supported the young business man who had a heart of gold and sweets to match. And Sato wasn’t a bad guy to work for. Quite the opposite, in fact; he paid his employees well and was very flexible with their schedules since most of them attended University of Akihabara, which is how Katsuki got roped into the evening shift. Not that he was complaining about that—it was generally a quiet time and he didn’t have to deal with as many stupid customers. Overall, it wasn’t a bad gig.
Katsuki had just finished breaking down the decaf espresso machine (good riddance—it was an abomination to mankind) when the bell at the front door jingled, announcing the arrival of a new customer. He took a deep breath to prepare himself for this onslaught of stupidity. The last patron had argued with him until they were both red in the face about the cafe having diet whipped cream, even though he assured him that the cafe never had any to begin with. Eventually, he was able to convince him that the drink was perfectly delicious without a topping, and sent him on his merry way, all the while wishing he could punt kick that pint-sized asshole across the room.
He exhaled and made his way to the register, finally looking up and blinking in surprise as he took in the appearance of the customer waiting on him. This guy looked ridiculous—his obnoxiously bright red hair was spiked up and Katsuki was sure that this guy was trying to emulate either a hedgehog or a porcupine. His choice of clothing, or lack thereof, was as disastrous as his hair. His chest was fully exposed and the only sort of covering his upper half had was some sort of weird cropped red and black jacket. Black pants tucked themselves into hideous muddy-red boots, but what really took the cake was not the weird open-mouth face mask that he wore; instead, it was the piss-poor attempt at red chaps that were held together by a gaudy-looking R-shaped belt buckle. He looked like he walked right off the page of some sort of shitty manga that he was sure Deku would read. It wasn’t like they didn’t get cosplayers in the cafe, because they did all the time, but this was surely the most bizarre one he had seen. The guy smiled at him, and Katsuki had to fight the urge to roll his eyes. Stupid, over-friendly cosplayers.
“Welcome to Sugar Rush. What do you want?” he asked gruffly, ignoring the softly chastising “Kacchan” coming from the kitchen. He couldn’t help it—he had had his fill of idiots for the day and his feet were fucking sore.
“Uhh,” the redhead eloquently replied, craning his neck to look at the menu. Clearly this guy was more brawn than brains, in Katsuki’s most humble opinion. Miraculously, he kept himself from tapping his fingers against the countertop in annoyance while the other scanned over the hand-written list of drinks, his eyes finally lighting up in delight as he settled on one.
“I would like one of the caramel mocha frappuccinos please!” he said with a smile and Katsuki noted that the guy even had put in false teeth; the ones grinning back at him were sharp and dangerous looking.
“Size?”
“Um, large?” he replied, though to Katsuki, it seemed like he was uncertain.
“Is this for here or to go?” Katsuki was praying that the guy said to go because if he had to wipe down the lobby one more time before they closed, he was sure he was going to lose his mind.
“To go, unfortunately,” the cosplayer laughed, handing his card over as Katsuki gave him the total. “Oh yeah, don’t you need to ask my name?” he asked, putting the card away along with his receipt.
“Nah, I’ve got it. Just go to the end of the counter,” he replied, scribbling on the cup then turning to get the ingredients, effectively cutting off any conversation. He swore he heard the cosplayer mutter something that sounded suspiciously like “of course you do ” under his breath, but Katsuki refused to ask. As he stood up, milk in hand, he was met with disapproving green eyes peering at him from over the kitchen window.
“Not a word, Deku. And I swear to god, if you come out here, I’ll kill you,” he threatened while measuring out the milk. Izuku sighed, shaking his head and disappeared from Katsuki’s line of sight, which he much preferred right now. He poured the milk in the blender, added the pumps of mocha and caramel syrup, and tossed the ice in before popping the top on the machine and turning it on. Katsuki caught himself checking out the cosplayer out of the corner of his eye while he waited for the drink to be blended perfectly. The guy was sort of cute, he mused. Kind of in that endearing puppy dog sort of way as he hummed along to the shitty pop music that was playing on the speakers while he scrolled his phone. It was ridiculous, however, that he would even be thinking about how attractive the guy was—he was sure that he would never see him again. That, and he was nothing more than a customer; Katsuki had no business daydreaming about how nice it would be to feel those arms wrap around him, crushing him to that stupidly beautiful chest that was on display for all to see. Nope, not at all. It was hopeless. Just a fleeting crush that would never come to fruition.
A crash from the kitchen followed by an exclamation of “oh holy shit ” snapped him out of his delusional thoughts, and he huffed out an angry sigh. Leave it to Deku to break something once again. He emptied the contents of the blender into the to-go cup, adding a swirl of whipped cream to the top before securing the lid to the cup with a soft pop. He felt a smirk start pulling at his lips as he turned around.
“Large caramel mocha frappuccino for a ‘Shitty Hair,’” he called out, causing the cosplayer to look up from his screen, blinking in bewilderment as he looked between Katsuki and the drink that was on the counter. The reaction was priceless, if Katsuki could admit that to himself, and it was totally worth the look on the cosplayer’s face and the shrill “Kacchan ” yelled at him. What Katsuki wasn’t expecting, however, was the cosplayer to start laughing, a deep rumbling sound that sent shivers running through him. God, why was this guy’s laugh even attractive? It wasn’t fair.
“Oh shit, that was great!” the cosplayer replied once he was finally able to catch his breath, wiping tears out of his eyes while reaching for the cup. “I haven’t laughed that hard in ages. Have a great day, man!” he exclaimed, placing some coins on the counter as a tip before grabbing a straw and leaving the cafe. Katsuki was baffled at the guy’s reaction—most people didn’t thank him for insulting them. He shook his head, pocketing the yen, and turned to see a heaving Izuku with his hands on his knees like he had just ran a marathon frantically looking between him and the now closing door.
“Kacchan! You can’t call people names like that! Do you even know who that was?” he cried.
“Uh, just some shitty cosplayer, duh?” Katsuki rolled his eyes at Izuku’s theatrics, grabbing the blender and heading to the sink to rinse it out.
“A cosplayer?? No! That was Kirishima Eijirou, Kacchan!” Izuku replied and Katsuki dropped the blender in the sink, whipping around to face him.
“Kirishima Eijirou, as in the fucking actor?” Katsuki could feel a ball of dread curling up in his stomach. He was hoping that Deku was wrong, but that nerd knew celebrities like the back of his hand. The exasperated look he got in return was more than enough to confirm his worst fears.
“Yes that Kirishima Eijirou, Kacchan. Oh my god, I can’t believe you called him Shitty Hair. What were you thinking?” he asked, pulling at his hair.
“In my defense, I thought he was just some shitty cosplayer! What the hell was that get up, anyway? God, it was awful.”
“Oh my god, you’re kidding me, right? He’s currently filming for the live-screen adaptation of the Red Riot comics. This has been a highly anticipated movie from director Toyomitsu Taishiro that’s been in the works for the past four years. All Might productions picked it up and they finally just got the casting settled last year and were able to move forward with the filming process. And, he’s the main character. Oh my god, my best friend just called the actor for one of my favorite comic book heroes Shitty Hair. Oh my god, what if he gets the cafe shut down? What will we do about rent money? I’m sure mom could help me out, but still…” he trailed and Katsuki had to take a deep breath.
“Calm down, you dork. I highly doubt he’s going to get the cafe shut down. Hell, he seemed to have a good laugh over what I said. Besides, if he was upset with anyone, it would be me, not you. So don’t overwork your brain over there with things that won’t happen.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Izuku exhaled, visibly calming. “I still can’t believe you did that, though.”
“Are you ever going to shut up about it?” Katsuki groaned, going back to cleaning the blender out.
“Only when you decide to stop holding you being a barista over my head because of the Nighteye incident,” he laughed, walking out to the lobby to lock the door and turn the ‘open’ sign over to ‘closed.’
“Fair enough. Now, let’s get this shit done quick. My bed is calling my name.” They continued with their closing procedures, and as Katsuki was counting down the drawer for the night, his thoughts were haunting him. He just happened to have the shittiest luck, he determined. Not only was he crushing on a customer, but the customer was an actor. An actor who he happened to insult. Holy fuck. Great job, Katsuki. Way to fucking go. As they finished closing and were leaving the shop, he decided that it didn’t matter. This would just live to be an embarrassing tale that he would make sure he and Deku took to their graves. It’s not like he would ever see the guy again, after all.
Thanks for making it to the end of chapter one of my very first BNHA fic! Hope it was to your enjoyment. Please feel free to leave a review and let me know how I did! Chapter 2 should be coming soon <3

Top 5 Home Design Trends for a New Decade
Tumblr media
Whether you’re planning a simple refresh or a full-scale renovation, it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends in home design. Sellers who make tasteful updates can generate increased buyer interest and, in some cases, a premium selling price. And buyers should consider which features of a home will need updating immediately (or in the near future) so they can factor renovation costs into their overall budget.
Even if you have no immediate plans to buy or sell, we advise our clients to be thoughtful about the colors, materials, and finishes they select when planning a remodel, or even redecorating. Choosing over-personalized or unpopular options could hurt a home’s value when it does come time to list your property. And selecting out-of-style or overly-trendy elements could cause your home to feel dated quickly.
To help, we’ve rounded up five of the hottest home design trends for 2020. Keep in mind, not all of these will work well in every house. If you plan to buy, list, or renovate your property, give us a call. We can help you realize your vision and maximize the impact of your investment.
1. IN: Sustainability / OUT: Fast Furniture
Consumers have become increasingly eco-conscious. Many are shunning the mass-produced, “fast furniture” popularized by retailers like IKEA, opting instead for higher-quality pieces that are built to last. And the availability of non-toxic, environmentally-friendly furniture and decor options is set to grow in 2020 and beyond.
At the same time, there’s been a noticeable shift toward individuality in today’s interior design. Instead of following the latest fad, more homeowners are opting to embrace their personal style and invest in items they believe will “spark joy” (à la Marie Kondo) for years to come.
To incorporate this trend, designers recommend layering old and new pieces for a curated look that you can build over time. Instead of purchasing a matching furniture set from a big-box retailer, buy one or two sustainably-sourced pieces that complement what you already own. Try searching estate sales and Craigslist for vintage classics or well-built furniture that can be refinished. And to accessorize your room, mix sentimental items with newer finds to create a truly personalized space.
2. IN: Cozy / OUT: Cold
Designers are moving away from cool grays, industrial finishes, and stark modernism. In 2020, there’s a big emphasis on creating warm and cozy spaces through color, texture, and shape.
Gray has dominated the color palette for the past decade. This year, expect to see a move toward warmer neutrals, earth tones, and nature-inspired shades of blue and green. Warm metals, like gold and brass, will also continue to trend. And hardwood floors are heating up, as cool gray and whitewashed finishes fade in popularity. Expect to see a rise in classic choices like walnut, mahogany, and oak in richer and darker tones.
Furniture will also get cozier—and curvier—in 2020. From rounded sofas and curved-back chairs to oval dining tables, softened-angles are dominating the furniture scene right now. And designers expect softly-textured fabrics—like velvet, shearling, and mohair—to be big this year, as homeowners strive to add a touch of “hygge” (the Danish concept of calming comfort).
Want to warm up your home decor? Try one of the top paint colors for 2020: Benjamin Moore’s First Light (soft pink), Sherwin Williams’s Naval (rich blue), or Behr’s Back to Nature (light green).
3. IN: Bold / OUT: Boring
Bold is back! After years of neutral overload, vivid colors and prints will take center stage in 2020. Expect to see geometric designs, color blocking, and floral and botanical patterns on everything from pillows to rugs to wallpaper.
The hottest trend in interior paint right now is bold trim and ceilings. Monochromatic rooms (e.g., walls, ceilings, and millwork painted the same color) will be big this year, as well as high-contrast pairings, like white walls with black trim. Color is coming back to kitchens, too, and two-toned color schemes continue to gain steam. In 2019, 40% of remodelers chose a contrasting color for their kitchen island.[1] While white was still the top choice for cabinets, blue and gray are increasingly popular alternatives.
If you’re ready to “go bold,” separated spaces like laundry and powder rooms are great places to start. It’s easier to incorporate busy wallpaper or a bright wall color in an enclosed area because it doesn’t have to flow with the rest of your decor.
Of course, clients always want to know how design choices could impact their home’s value. The reality is, neutral finishes are still the safest bet for resale. If you’re prepping your home to go on the market, stick with non-permanent fixtures—like artwork and accessories—to brighten your space.
4. IN: Nature / OUT: Industrial
Biophilic design has been big the past few seasons, and it isn’t going anywhere in 2020. It centers around the health and wellness benefits of connecting with nature, even while indoors, and it’s impacted the latest trends in color, prints, and materials.
As we mentioned previously, floral and botanical patterns are hot right now, along with nature-inspired hues, like blues, greens, and earth tones. We’re also seeing a heightened use of organic shapes and sustainable materials in furniture and furnishings, including wood, wicker, rattan, and jute. This infusion of nature coincides with a decline in the popularity of urban-industrial fixtures. Designers predict that concrete floors and Edison light bulbs are on the way out.
Want to bring in elements of biophilic design on a budget? Houseplants are a great place to start. But you can also enhance your home’s natural light and create a visual sightline to the outdoors by removing heavy curtains and blinds. And when the weather is nice, open your windows and enjoy the breeze, sounds, and smells of nature. These simple acts are scientifically proven to help reduce stress, boost cognitive performance, and enhance mood![2]
5. IN: Functional / OUT: Fussy
In 2020, homeowners want design that’s beautiful, but also liveable. With the rise in remote workplaces, online shopping, and virtual exercise classes, many of us are spending more time at home than ever before. Cue the growing appeal of multi-functional spaces, like a combination kitchen/office or gym/playroom. Real life—and rising housing prices—necessitates creative use of limited space.
Durable, low-maintenance materials will also surge in popularity this year. Engineered quartz—which is more stain, heat, and chip-resistant than natural stone—is now the #1 choice for kitchen countertops.[1] Waterproof, wood-look luxury vinyl is the fastest-growing segment in the flooring industry.[3] And improvements to water and stain-resistant performance fabric has made it a mainstream option for both indoor and outdoor upholstery.
Now that functional is hot, what’s not? Designers say that mirrored furniture, open shelving, and all-white kitchens are too impractical for today’s busy families.
So how can you start enjoying the time and energy-saving benefits of this design trend? Begin by structuring each room so that it best suits your needs. And when purchasing furniture or fixtures, choose options that are durable and easy-to-clean. The truth is, design fads come and go. But a comfortable and relaxed home (that you don’t spend every spare minute maintaining!) can help create memories to last a lifetime.

Agilenano - News: 2020-04-28
I’ve already shared two of my favourite exhibitions from Stockholm Design Week – ‘The Sculptor’s Residence’ and ‘The Archive’ – so today I have a round-up of interesting product launches from the Stockholm Furniture Fair, which takes place at the same time. The largest trade show in the Nordic design world, it brings together more than 700 brands – mostly from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, but a few from further afield, too. It’s also where many companies choose to unveil their latest pieces, and I’ve picked out some of my favourites below. So, make yourself a cuppa, sit back and feast your eyes on these beautiful new designs… Relaunched pieces from Fredericia’s archives First up is Danish brand Fredericia, which has long been a favourite of mine. Its focus has always been timeless, long-lasting design and for 2020 it has chosen to relaunch several classic pieces from its archives. One is the ‘Ditzel’ lounge chair, created in 1949 by Nanna Ditzel (later responsible for Fredericia’s iconic ‘Trinidad’ chair) and her husband Jørgen. It marked a departure from the upright, rigid chairs that were conventional at the time, and its curved shape was intended to give people the freedom to sit in new, more relaxed ways. The updated version is made from PUR foam with a steel frame, wooden legs and a choice of upholstery, and will be available from September. The other pieces, which are due to go on sale this spring, were all the work of Fredericia’s first design director, Børge Mogensen. The ‘BM61’ and ‘BM62’ chairs (the latter with arms, the former without) are simple yet striking, with a solid wooden frame and a choice of cane wicker or linen webbing for the seat and back. The ‘Canvas’ chair, meanwhile, has a clean-lined oak frame and chunky armrests that echo Mogensen’s famous ‘Spanish’ chair, but with canvas rather than leather for the seat and back. It was designed just before his death in 1972 and has never been put into full production before now, but it makes an excellent addition to Fredericia’s range. Versatile furniture and lighting from Carl Hansen & Son Børge Mogensen was also the man behind two pieces being relaunched by Carl Hansen & Son: the ‘BM0865’ daybed (available from May) and the ‘BM0488’ table bench (available from September). Both were originally showcased at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild furniture exhibition in 1958 and formed part of Mogensen’s ‘building furniture’ concept, through which he aimed to create enduring designs that could be added to and adapted over time in response to changing needs. The daybed is made up of modular oak seats, soft cushions and cylindrical head and armrests that can be used in all sorts of different combinations, and it suits a wide variety of spaces. The bench is crafted from solid oak with a woven top and is similarly versatile, working well as a seat, a side table, a coffee table or a surface for books and other items. Also on show on Carl Hansen’s stand – and in some of the below press photos – was the new ‘MO’ series of floor, table, wall and ceiling lamps. The company’s first collaboration with Danish designer Mads Odgård, it consists of simple lacquered-steel shapes that symbolise light’s comforting effect on people and is designed to last for decades without dating. It will be on sale from October, with prices starting at £263 / €300 per lamp. Scandinavian classics and contemporary tables from Warm Nordic There was yet another relaunch from Warm Nordic – a young Danish brand unveiled at the fair in 2018. It was founded with the aim of showcasing long-lost mid-century pieces alongside contemporary designs, and its latest addition is ‘Dwell’ – a family of compact sofas and armchairs first created by architect Hans Olsen in the 1950s. The curved shape and tapered wooden legs form an elegant yet striking silhouette and there’s a wide range of upholstery options to choose from, including leather and tactile bouclé. It’s set to go on sale this spring, with prices ranging from €1,800 to €5,250. Warm Nordic also used the fair to showcase its new ‘Affinity’ dining table. The work of architect / design duo Halskov & Dalsgaard, it combines a bevelled linoleum top with slimline metal legs and beautiful cane detailing. It comes in round and elliptical versions, with a choice of three muted colourways, and it too will be available in the spring. Prices start at €2,030. New additions at Artek New on Artek‘s stand were two pieces designed by French duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec: the ‘Rope’ chair and the ‘Tupla’ wall hook. Both combine simple-looking silhouettes with sophisticated construction and stay true to the Finnish brand’s ethos of blending art and technology (hence the name Artek). The chair is described as ‘a line drawing translated into space’ and consists of a steel-tube frame threaded with rope that forms the back and armrests. It’s surprisingly comfortable as it bends to the sitter’s shape, and it comes in black with a black polyester rope or light grey with a natural flax rope. The wall hook, meanwhile, is made from die-cast zinc and intended to add beauty to an everyday object, with elegant loops that are as lyrical as they are functional. Sculptural minimalism from Kristina Dam I always look forward to seeing the latest pieces from Copenhagen-based designer Kristina Dam, who describes her aesthetic as ‘sculptural minimalism’, and her spring-summer 2020 collection certainly didn’t disappoint. Among the new additions on her stand were the understated ‘Capsule’ glasses and carafe, the angular ‘Pedestal’ table and a bench to match the existing ‘Curved’ side table. I also spotted brown- and black-leather editions of the popular ‘Curved’ pouf, a new full-sized version of the ‘Rotating’ mirror, and a beautiful porcelain sculpture called ‘Brick’, which takes its cue from Ancient Greek architecture and features a single unbroken line. My favourites, though, were the powder-coated steel ‘Bauhaus’ lounge chair – a tribute to the famous Bauhaus art school, available in black or white and suitable for indoor and outdoor use – and the painted-glass ‘Dual’ vases, which come in soft, earthy colours and can be stood on either end, giving you two different designs in one. Many of the new launches are available now; others are coming soon but you can sign up for alerts via the website. New colours and options from String Furniture Swedish stalwart String Furniture used the fair to display several new additions, including a rich brown version of its iconic modular shelving system and the full roll-out of its beige colourway, first launched for some elements last year. There was also a new utilitarian version of its compact ‘Pocket’ shelf unit featuring perforated metal and a lipped edge. It was created by Swedish duo Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström, who sought to reinterpret the design while retaining the essence of the original, and is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and garages. The holes can be used for hanging hooks, rails and other accessories, and it comes in three colour choices – white, taupe and neon orange – that were developed in collaboration with stylist Lotta Agaton. Sustainable wooden furniture from Nikari Finnish brand Nikari had largely escaped my radar before now, but I was very taken with the way it combines modern design with traditional craftsmanship. I was also impressed by its commitment to sustainability, which extends as far as powering its head office, studio and workshop with renewable energy from the hydro-power plant located next door. Its pared-back wooden pieces encompass creations from the likes of Alvar Aalto, Jasper Morrison and Claesson Koivisto Rune, and are made from responsibly sourced wood finished with natural lacquers. New for 2020 is the understated ‘Storia’ stool, designed by Nikari founder Kari Virtanen, and Jenni Roininenat’s ‘Basic’ table, which comes with round or rectangular ends. Both are understated and timeless, and I can see them fitting seamlessly into all sorts of different settings. All-new accessories from &tradition As well as displaying its recently launched pieces by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen, &tradition unveiled ‘Collect’, a line of elegant and understated home accessories created by Space Copenhagen. Designed to complement the Danish brand’s range of classic and contemporary furniture and lighting, it includes cushions, throws and bedspreads in earthy hues such as beige, burgundy and terracotta. All are made from soft and cosy natural materials, with linen and merino wool alongside organic cotton. There’s also a series of hand-crafted concrete planters, which can be used indoors and out and come in three different sizes. The full collection should be available very soon, although prices have yet to be confirmed. The ‘Roadie’ bench from Massproductions Last but not least is Sweden-based Massproductions, whose new ‘Roadie’ outdoor bench was named ‘Best Product’ in the fair awards. The creation of the brand’s British co-founder Chris Martin, it was inspired by the steel crowd control barriers found at rock concerts and is made from strong yet lightweight aluminium. The high back is designed for comfort, and the curved shape means sections can be placed together in a circle to encourage conversation; it’s also stackable for easy storage. It comes in brushed silver, pale yellow and dark green finishes, and matching seat cushions are available. Prices start at €2,060. Neutral Home Interior Ideas
Beautifully designed by two very talented interior designers, Mitzi Maynard and Clare Kennedy, this neutral home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (6 including pool house), and a total of 6,500 square feet.
The homeowners began building this neutral home in the fall of 2015, and it was completed in the Spring of 2017. This home combines a few different architectural styles. The exterior is a fresh take on a traditional home, which works well in their established neighborhood in Nashville. The interior of the home has a more Modern/Mediterranean style with a neutral color scheme that is easy on the eyes and soothing to the soul.

Sarah and Adam Fairhead Hall knew of this old church in Willunga, South Australia, having regularly visited Sarah’s sister in the town. When they learned the property was for sale, they put in an offer and crossed their fingers, and finally five months later, their offer was accepted!
The heritage listed former Church Of Christ building has a rich history, having functioned as a Masonic lodge, WWII control centre, Country Women’s Association centre and more since 1870.
‘It had been lived in by others since 1991, but no internal structure like the mezzanine was put in place,’ says Sarah. ‘When we bought it, the church was hired out as a yoga studio, for belly dancing classes and chanting, along with party hire. So A LOT has happened in this space!’ Sarah says.
The couple and their children Story, (now 12) and Arlo (8) moved into the space in 2017, initially camping in tents, while they decided how best to divide the space.
‘It had to include a swing for the kids, internal windows that could look in a main space, and leave as much full height space as possible,’ says Sarah. ‘Once we figured out the layout it was a lot easier, then we could work out how big we wanted each room and kind of made it up as we went along… Eventually we just needed walls!’
Among significant additions include north-facing windows (in place of previously bricked up niches), a new kitchen, and the mezzanine built by Adam, containing three bedrooms.
Even with some walls now in place, the house retains somewhat of a studio feel, which is continually being arranged. Sarah is the owner of styling and vintage furniture business Read&Hall, and has furnished the space to adopt a rustic feel filled with vintage signage, tableware and other treasures proudly on display against a Dulux Antique White USA backdrop. The religious backdrop above the record player was found rolled up in a shed, and is believed to have come from a church in Copenhagen.
Being a heritage structure, Sarah says there are always compromises to be made, but that all comes with the territory of living in a church! ‘It was not a house and not designed to be one. The kitchen is very long and narrow and has a door into the master bedroom!’ she says.
In future, the family hopes to expand with an addition off the kitchen, under the guidance of a state heritage appointed architect. ‘We can’t wait to get to that bit!’ says Sarah.

Tumblr media
Spring has sprung, and so have the savings.
Tumblr media
Now through April 16, head on over to Design Within Reach to save 15% on outdoor furniture, lighting, fire pits, umbrellas, and more—and get free shipping sitewide. Here’s what you need to create your outdoor sanctuary.
EMU Design Studio Arc En Ciel Folding Table
Tumblr media
Arc En Ciel, or "rainbow" in French, is a small-space solution inspired by the chairs and tables that have filled Parisian parks and cafés since the 19th century. Weighing about 18 pounds, this durable, hardwearing Arc En Ciel Folding Table (2011) is produced with great attention to detail. The steel frame has a baked-on polyester powder-coated finish that stands up to the elements and withstands being folded and unfolded as your needs change. The Arc En Ciel folds completely flat for convenient storage and is suitable for outdoor and contract use. From sidewalk café to city balcony to backyard patio, the Arc En Ciel is a well-priced solution for any outdoor dining need. Made in Italy.
Studio Tolvanen Terassi Dining Table
Tumblr media
The husband-and-wife team of designers Julie and Mika Tolvanen works out of Studio Tolvanen in Helsinki, designing everything from furniture to accessories for companies around the globe. Though they share their lives together, each one approaches design from different directions. "We are both very independent minded," Julie explains. In fact, the Terassi Collection (2017) was their first project together. Inspired by 1930s-era furniture they came across on a visit to Timberline Lodge in Oregon, they endowed the Terassi Dining Table with a spaced-plank tabletop for excellent outdoor performance and round tapered legs for a leaner profile and rustic yet crafted appearance. "We wanted the overall feeling to be familiar but a bit lighter, a bit friendlier," Julie says. Terassi is expertly fashioned in high-quality teak with a beautiful straight grain. Includes a removable plug consisting of two concentric rings to accommodate umbrellas of various sizes. Made in Indonesia. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Stua Deneb Teak Bench
Tumblr media
Jesús Gasca is the principal designer at Stua, a furniture company that he founded in 1983 in San Sebastián, Spain. With his company’s name standing for solo tengo un amor – "I have only one love" – it’s Gasca’s mission to improve the habitat in which we live. His Deneb Teak Bench (2003) celebrates materials in their purest form, combining austere aluminum with smooth, slatted teak. The precision-engineered frame is assembled from four components that fit seamlessly together in support of the teak top. Clean-cut V-shaped legs are configured to increase stability and allow two or more benches to be put together for a unified ensemble. Sustainably harvested teak slats can be oiled to maintain their color or left to develop a beautiful silver patina. This bench can be used both indoors and out, on its own in an entryway or garden or with the Deneb Teak Table. Rubber glides protect floors. Assembly required. Made in Spain. Dougan Clarke Tuuci Ocean Master Rectangular Shade
Tumblr media
Protect yourself from elements but keep your view with the Tuuci Rectangular (2012), which is more horizontal than traditional dome-shaped umbrellas. Dougan Clarke, a consummate sailor who spent over a decade working with sails, rigging and boat design, knows what will stand up to sun, rain, salt and wind, and he designs his shades accordingly. This shade system is easy to use and maintain but constructed of replaceable marine-grade components to ensure a lifetime of serviceability. It features a clever cam cleat and pulley system to raise and lower the shade with ease. "I sought to redefine what was previously known as an umbrella," explains Clarke. "The resulting shade sculptures embody both form and function." As with other shades, keep it in a closed position during storms and when not in use. DWR is not responsible for accidents or damage caused by misuse or weather. Commercial quality. Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Skagerak Bell Lantern
Tumblr media
"A product has to be useful and realistic to be considered as good design," says Martin Solem. With this in mind, he designed the Bell Lantern (2018), a versatile nod to the traditional lantern. It consists of a glass jar set within a groove on a powder-coated steel base with a handle locked in the upright position. Suitable for use indoors and out. Candle not included. Max candle height: 3" for small, 4.5" for large. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Design Within Reach Sommer Chaise
Tumblr media
Copenhagen-based designer Chris Halstrøm has a special knack for creating things for people she’ll probably never meet yet making them feel as if she knows them somehow. With her Sommer Outdoor Collection (2019), which she designed for DWR, Halstrøm wanted to give people the experience of indoor furniture in outdoor spaces. "I was intrigued by the idea of bringing the look of paper-cord weaving, often found on Danish indoor furniture, to the outdoors, but in a weather-safe material," she says. "I wanted it to feel natural, and open up that wall between indoors and out." This duality gives the collection an openness that she says makes it very easy to live with. "I find it interesting to create something that people can read their own stories into, and make it their own. For me, furniture is at its most interesting when you see it being enjoyed by people." Made in Indonesia. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Obeetee Indra Outdoor-Indoor Rug
Tumblr media
Named for deities of the heavens, Indra (2018) is a lightweight flat-weave fringed rug fashioned from polyester yarns with a soft feel, dyed using a special technique that imbues each yarn with multiple tones to produce a striking heather effect. Obeetee employs skilled artisans to craft handmade rugs using skills that are passed down from one generation to the next. To give back to communities, the company also spearheads Women Weavers, a program for teaching the art of carpet weaving to women in need. Lightweight, easy to clean and suitable for use indoors and out. Rug pad recommended. Made in India. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Plodes Studio Geometric Fire Pit
Tumblr media
Growing up in a resourceful do-it-yourself family, John Paul Plauché learned how to design and create objects at an early age. A man with an inquisitive, artistic mind, Plauché earned a degree in architecture before starting Plodes Studio. Today, this multidisciplinary workshop provides clients with architectural, interior and product design solutions. Whether he’s working on a limited-edition piece of art or a mass-produced shelving system for Google’s offices, Plauché’s approach is about simplicity. "My work is the result of a coalescence of art, product and architectural design," says the designer. His handcrafted Geometric Fire Pit (2004) is available in a choice of two sizes and two metals – A36 low-carbon steel or Corten steel – and can be used with seasoned wood or charcoal. A pipe-shaped plug is included for preventing coals and ash from falling through the opening while allowing enough airflow to fuel the fire. For outdoor use only. Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Loll Designs Lollygagger Chaise
Tumblr media
"We make outdoor furniture for the modern lollygagger," explains Loll founder Greg Benson. "Our furniture is for people who are looking for fresh design that’s made in the U.S.A. with sustainable manufacturing practices. At Loll, we strive to inspire people to appreciate the outdoors both by the way we make our products and how they are intended to be used." Starting as a side project, Loll was founded in 2006 by a custom skate park manufacturer as a way to repurpose excess ramp material. That original company is gone, but Loll still designs and produces durable all-weather outdoor furniture made from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, mostly from reclaimed post-consumer milk jugs. Since the company’s founding, its dedication to the environment has kept more than 100 million milk jugs out of landfills. The Lollygagger Collection (2014) is waterproof, fade-resistant and maintenance-free, making it perfect for use indoors and out. Each piece ships flat to save on packing materials; simple assembly required (Allen wrench included). Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Dusen Dusen Towel
Tumblr media
Ellen Van Dusen studied the psychology of design and the brain’s reaction to visual stimuli at Tufts University. After graduating, she launched Brooklyn-based Dusen Dusen, a clothing line that soon became known for its lively original prints, then expanded the brand in 2015 to include bedding and towels. Dusen draws her inspiration from a variety of sources, such as midcentury resort architecture, Italian industrial design and Scandinavian textiles. Her wonderfully playful Dusen Dusen Towel (2018) is marked by vivid colors and bold patterns that captivate. It sports a jacquard weave, so its sides are opposites of each other. Machine washable. Made in Turkey. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Skagerak Cutter Bench
Tumblr media
In the 1990s, Danish designer Niels Hvass became a leader in the Nordic design scene by creating furniture that earned him awards and recognitions from Bo Bedre, Georg Jensen and The Design Foundation. He designed his teak Cutter Collection to challenge overly nostalgic wooden outdoor furnishings, bringing elegance and simplicity to outdoor spaces, as well as interior ones. Originally intended for gardens and patios, the Cutter Bench (2008) is also fitting for kitchens and bathrooms. This piece features specially engineered mortise-and-tenon joints and metal rail inlays for durability. Like all teak products, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Like all teak products, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Please note: At first, the wood will be lighter than what’s shown in photos. Made in Thailand. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
HAY Palissade Dining Armchair
Tumblr media
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec founded their Paris-based design firm in 1999, where they design architectural projects, large-scale art installations, furniture, rugs, tableware and home accessories. Their work has been exhibited worldwide, from MoMA in New York to Centre Pompidou in Paris to Tel Aviv Museum of Art. For the Danish design collective HAY, the brothers designed the Palissade Collection (2015). Designed in color and form to integrate effortlessly into a natural landscape or urban setting, this collection stands out for its combination of visual simplicity and core strength. Palissade is strong without being bulky, elegant without being fragile. Stacks up to eight high. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Case Eos Rectangular Table
Tumblr media
When we asked Matthew Hilton to identify the common elements found in his work, he replied, "Functional, stackable, it has to store easily and be a good price." Fast-forward to today, and he’s still staying true to those ideals. Seeing a need for durable outdoor furniture at accessible prices, Hilton created the Eos Collection (2011), which is sleek enough to work in an indoor dining space, as well. Eos is lightweight – literally and visually – smartly proportioned and very comfortable. Certain to inspire leisurely outdoor living during the long days of summer, this collection was named for Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn and bringer of light. It’s constructed of powder-coated aluminum that won’t rust over time. Rectangular and Square tables fit seamlessly together to create a longer table when needed. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Serralunga Cup Planter, Large
Tumblr media
After a brief career as a watch designer, Naoto Fukasawa moved to the United States to work for the design firm IDEO in 1989. Still learning English, Fukasawa used visuals to communicate with his Silicon Valley coworkers as they designed computers, medical devices, furniture and sporting goods. In 1996 he returned to Japan, where he launched IDEO’s Tokyo office, and seven years later he started his own company. Fukasawa’s approach to design is based on careful observation of people’s actions and feelings. It is in the study of these behaviors that he is able to create products that fit into people’s lives so naturally that they are "Without Thought" – a concept he now teaches at two universities and to clients worldwide. In designing his Cup Planter (2003), Fukasawa was inspired by the curved shape of ancient wooden bowls to create "a cozy atmosphere for plants." The double-walled construction is crafted of UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. Cup can be drilled in the center from the inside out to allow drainage. Made in Italy. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Brown Jordan Sol y Luna Lounge Chair
Tumblr media
Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Lounge Chair back wraps around you, and the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Photo courtesy of Design Within Reach
Menu Well Watering Can
Tumblr media
Former members of the studio Norway Says, Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll started their own studio in 2009 after collaborating together on several successful international exhibitions. Their work in furniture, lighting and accessories has brought international accolades, including "Designer of The Year" honors in Norway. Simple yet functional, their Well Watering Can (2015) features an ample handle for easy carrying, large opening for fast filling and an extra-long spout for reaching into all those tight areas. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Menu We love the products we feature and hope you do, too. If you buy something through a link on the site, we may earn an affiliate commission.
