High Seas (1 / 2)
Tumblr media
I am so catching up on fic requests this week! lol This one is for my bestie, sister from another mister, and soon-to-be NYC jail cell partner (lol nah, we'll be good!) @icecoffee90 based on this ask. I decided to make it a 2-parter. I hope you're OK with that. I hope you enjoy this!
Book: Open Heart (Post Series)
Characters: Tobias Carrick x F!MC, Ethan Ramsey
Category: Fun Fluff?
Words: 1,200
Summary: Casey and Tobias have been looking forward to their vacation plans, a cruise on the high seas with some old Hopkin's friends as well. But when work gets in the way, Casey has a suggestion. Can she sell it?
A/N: Part two will be up tomorrow - This is just some light-hearted fun and I hope you enjoy it. Participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge - I could make it stargazing or sunglasses? It's definitely a summer vacation - does that work Dani? lol? Thank you!
Tumblr media
Casey walked into Tobias’s office sheepishly, without saying a word. She turned around and leaned against the locked door. Knowing what that typically meant, he broke into a lascivious grin, but Casey’s scrunched-up face and worried demeanor left him perplexed.
“Babe...” she grimaced.
“Yes....” he simpered with a raised brow.
“No,” she corrected with a nervous giggle. “It’s not that... not this time, at least. I’m afraid I have some... news.”
His shoulders dropped as his eyes widened. “Oh, shit... you’re not pregnant, are you?”
“What? No!” she shot back incredulously. “Tobias, that happened once, and now every time I have news, you assume that’s it? Besides, I thought you wanted ten kids or something.”
“More like five, but Sammy is barely six months old. Sweetheart,” he smiled as he rose to embrace her, his lips meeting hers in a tender, delightful kiss to seal his wordless apology. “For the record, I would be delighted... but we said we wanted to space the Carrick Pack out a little more, that’s all.”
“Well,” she attempted to worm out of his embrace with a bashful smile that was the very opposite of his devious grin. This man was entirely too proud of the effect he had on her. “Once you hear my news, you’ll probably wish it was Carrick Bambino 2.0.”
His face grew serious as he leaned against his desk, and his wife collapsed into his visitor’s chair.
“Case... you’re OK, right? You’re not sick or something?”
“No, no...” she assured. “Nothing like that. I didn’t mean to frighten you. But remember that proposal I submitted to the governor’s office?”
“The one about expanding free healthcare to children in the state’s poorest communities? Sure, how could I forget? You put your heart and soul into that project – pregnant and all.”
“Well, it paid off... I got a call from the Lieutenant Governor, and well... they loved the proposal and asked if Naveen and I could put a presentation together for them. They’d like to make it happen.”
“Hon! That’s incredible!” He gasped, face glowing with pride. “What are you doing, scaring me like that? This is wonderful news... the best! Why would I be unhappy?”
“It’s... the timing,” she sighed. “The Governor and her healthcare committee only had two days available to meet with us.... both during the week we were supposed to be on our cruise.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry, baby. I know how much we’ve been looking forward to it... but this project is so important and,” she stopped when she saw his face fall. “... and I supposed I can bring someone else up to speed and let them take the meeting. It’s just...”
“Oh, No!” he interrupted, taking her hand. “Baby girl, you worked your ass off on that proposal, and I’m so proud of you! No way are you handing all your hard work over to someone else at this stage. Besides, no one believes in it as much as you – and it’s too important. You have to be there. We’ll go on a cruise another time.”
Casey glanced at him with a playful smirk. “Did you put cancellation insurance on the trip like I told you to?”
The mischievous gleam in his eyes answered her before he did. “Have I told you how proud I am of you? And how absolutely beautiful you look today?”
“So, that’s a no on the insurance,” Casey laughed.
“I don’t care. We’ll lose the money. Or I’ll see if we can transfer the trip to someone else.”
“But it’s with your old Hopkins friends! I don’t want you to miss out, so I have the perfect solution. Ethan only declined so we could go together. But, if I can’t go, I can hold down the Diagnostic Team with Harper and Baz, and Ethan can go with you.”
“Uhm, no.”
“Uhm, yes. I already called the cruise line. They said we could transfer the ticket to his name. Plus, it would be nice for you to see your old friends together without your old ball and chain there.”
His lips pursed and he gave her with a reprimanding stare. “When have I ever referred to you as my ball and chain!”
“I’m teasing,” she reassured. “But come on, tell me it wouldn’t be fun for you and Ethan to go on a trip with your old med school friends? As much as I’ll miss you, it’s not such a terrible outcome.”
“It’s not terrible,” he groaned. “But I wanted a little romantic getaway with my wife, too. Ethan is no use to me there.”
“True. But you can cancel the romantic suite with the jacuzzi and change to a standard room, but go! Sammy and I will be fine, you get some friend time and will be back before you know it. All we need to do is get Ethan to agree. What do you say?”
“One condition. I get to Zoom in for your presentation. No way I’m going to miss watching my wife kicking ass.”
“Oh, but Hon,” she grinned, slipping into his arms and playfully toying with the lapels on his lab coat. “But then you’ll be all turned on and so far away... is that a good idea?”
“Sure is. Imagine how worked up we’ll be for the reunion when I get back,” he winked.
“So, then it’s a deal?”
“As long as Ethan’s on board, it’s a deal.”
~~~~~
“Are you freaking kidding me?” Ethan scowled.
Tobias turned to Casey. “See, what did I tell you?”
“Ethan, you can stop pretending you don’t like Tobias. You were our best man. You’re Sammy’s godfather. You practically live at our house on your days off....”
“That’s just to see Samantha,” he interrupted.
“You’re so full of shit!” Casey joked. “I know being curmudgeonly is your brand, but shut up and go! Are you afraid I’ll destroy the DT while you’re gone?”
“No,” Ethan insisted. “It’s not like I’m leaving Carrick in charge, for God’s sake.”
“Well, technically, you are,” Tobias teased. “She is Casey Carrick now, remember?”
“Yeah, the poor thing,” Ethan scowled. “But you know what I meant!”
“Come on,” Tobias cajoled. “It’s been a long time since you and I spent with the old crew. As much as I’d rather be with Casey than you, and, frankly, as much as they’d rather be with Casey than you... it’ll still be fun.”
Ethan’s expression softened as he stared into the distance. “We did have some fun times together in the past.”
“Sure as hell did,” Tobias agreed.
“And you don’t mind?” Ethan asked Casey.
“It was my idea! I’d love to be there, but this presentation is too important to me. Vivian promised she’ll help me with Sammy, and I’d be happy to know you two clowns are off having fun.”
“Sounds like you have it all worked out,” Ethan replied.
Tobias reached over and poked his friend in the arm. “So, is that a yes?”
“I may live to regret this, but fine. I’ll go.”
“Yey!!!” Casey clapped.
“See that,” Ethan smirked. “She’s already happy to get rid of you.”
“Shit!” Tobias laughed, “I’m shocked it took this long for that to happen.”
“Oh, God,” Casey rolled her eyes. “Just promise me you won’t push each other overboard.”
“No promises, babe. If he’s gone, one of us is up for a promotion.”
“Now, that’s premeditated.”
Casey shook her head. “I have a feeling I may live to regret this.”
Luke Arnold, Doc Wyatt talk the teamwork and insanity that defines ‘ESSENTIALS’
The compelling new OGN is funding via Kickstarter.
by Chris Coplan (April 18, 2024)
You may know Luke Arnold as Long John Silver in the Black Sails and/or INXS’ own Michael Hutchence in the Never Tear Us Apart miniseries. Doc Wyatt, meanwhile, is best known for his production work on the iconic Napoleon Dynamite and the animated Rocket and Groot for Marvel. So, what happens when a lauded actor and a TV writer/producer get together? Why a brand-new graphic novel, ESSENTIALS.
For ESSENTIALS, Arnold and Wyatt were brought together in part by The Lab Press, a new publishing outfit that focuses primarily on graphic novels. Together, the pair then collaborated with a veritable smorgasbord of comics artists, including Bill Sienkiewicz (who does the cover), Dani, Jason Howard, Andrea Mutti, and Glenn Fabry. (The book’s colors were provided by Jordie Bellaire, Brad Simpson, and Wesley Wong, with lettering from DC Hopkins of AndWorld Design).
Once fully assembled, this superstar team behind ESSENTIALS set about crafting a story in which “the world you see around you is not real.” More specifically, we follow “disgraced mathematician Harris Pax” as he and Buttons (an “interdimensional being possessing his niece’s favorite toy”) set about smashing the walls of this faux reality. ESSENTIALS asks some big questions — “What matters most in a well-lived life? Is joy more valuable than truth?” — just as much as it’s a rollicking, dimension-hopping adventure story.
ESSENTIALS is currently crowdfunding via Kickstarter, with the campaign having raised $13,000-plus (of a seemingly $1,111 goal) on the way to its May 16 deadline. (Head here to contribute.) To get a better idea of the work that went into ESSENTIALS, we recently got to field questions to both Arnold and Wyatt. The duo spoke about the somewhat involved creative process, the big themes at the book’s heart, working with The Lab Press, and much more.
AIPT: I’m curious: what’s the collaborative process look like between a TV writer and an actor making a comic book?
Luke Arnold: It’s hard to summarize this process because there are so many stages. We broke most of the story on zoom between Australia and LA. Then, we outlined in pieces, trading them back and forth multiple times, rewriting and recrafting until we were happy. After that, we’d take a chapter each, write them, share them, editing and/or rewriting each other’s work. Then, it would go to the artists, and we’d wait for the first sketches to roll in.
Because the team (Doc, myself, and everyone at The Lab) is spread around the globe, we found that the best place to review artwork was actually in VR. We all got Oculus headsets that allowed us to sit around a table together with the art displayed on a huge board in front of us, marveling over the work and deciding on any notes to send back to the artists.
The next few stages would take place over email, and then when all the art was finished, Doc and I would get back on Zoom to take another look at the script. Once you have those final pages, you can quickly realize that a lot of dialogue feels unnecessary, so we’d go through and make changes before sending everything to the letterer. That was one of my favorite stages, as you have an opportunity to write some parts all over again, inspired by the work of the artists.
Doc Wyatt: Luke’s an actor, but he’s also a novelist. His novels blow me away. I knew Luke first as an actor, and on set, he was talking about these fantasy novels that he wanted to write. But when it actually happened, I was blown away. The Last Smile in Sunder City was Luke’s first book, and it kicked off a series that’s a mashup of the noir detective genre with urban fantasy. Anyone who’s missed it should catch up with it.
As a writer, Luke is intricate. He works in levels and layers, meanings behind meanings, and philosophical underpinnings. It was a really rich and rewarding experience because we’d start out talking about the story we were breaking, but the conversation would drift into all these other, unrelated places… until suddenly it would snap back into story mode, but bringing along all these influences from our seemingly unrelated conversations.
AIPT: What’s the elevator pitch for ESSENTIALS? It seems like there are a lot of big questions churning at the heart of this book.
LA: Our world has collided with another dimension and reality has become untethered. Most humans were killed in the collision, and those that survived are now trapped in their own subjective realities as their beliefs, thoughts, and fears become manifest around them. Harris Pax – the only scientist who foresaw this apocalypse and managed to protect himself – has teamed up with Buttons – a being from the other dimension. Together they must travel into these subjective realities and convince the people inside to give up their illusions and return to the real world.
DW: Honestly, it can sound complicated, but at the end of the day the story is pretty simple. A cosmic catastrophe has killed most human life, with the few survivors unknowingly stuck in their own bubbles of subjective reality. It’s the job of our heroes to pull them out of these private realities before they’re killed by them.
AIPT: Similarly, it seems like this book may be about/interested in simulations and subjective reality and the like. Why are those kinds of massive ideas interesting, and how do you come at them from a new angle?
LA: It’s a cliché now to say that we’ve never been so divided. We started writing this four years ago, and things seem to have only gotten worse. In this age of reactionary politics and algorithms, we really are starting to live in separate realities where even basic facts are up for dispute. But this feeling of disconnection was an existential issue long before the internet. Artists and writers have always explored the pain of isolation, our yearning for interconnection, and the despondency that comes from witnessing the perpetual division of the human race on both an intimate and planetary scale. With ESSENTIALS, we found two heroes, a villain, and a reality-spanning quest that allows us to dig into these concerns in a way that feels fresh and kind of limitless. There are already so many realities we’ve had to cast aside and many more we hope to include as the story continues.
The Jason Howard cover to ESSENTIALS. Courtesy of The Lab Press.
AIPT: What’s it like to be the debut release from Lab Press? Does that pressure help or complicate your process as creators and then also promoters of said creation?
LA: I can really only speak to it from a creative standpoint. It has awarded us a kind of freedom that is rare to find. The Lab and ESSENTIALS were formed at the same time, so the publishers had no preconceptions about what this book needed to be. There were no expectations, either from the reader or the company itself, so the book was able to find its form on its own terms. And being their debut, The Lab was likely more open to our wild ideas, such as jumping between so many artists in the way we do.
DW: For me, sure– it’s a little nerve-wracking to be the first book from a new publisher, because they’re going to be doing all their learning on our book. But that said, we believe in them. They’ve certainly taken a risk on our weird, little, indie book, so it’s only fair we take a risk on them!
AIPT: The book has a slew of talented artists attached, including Dani, Andrea Mutti, and Bill Sienkiewicz. What’s it mean to have such a roster of sheer artistic talent, and do you have any standout moments/pages?
LA: Even though this book has been in development for years, from the artists signing on to sending their pencils, their inks and colors, and now holding the final version, I still can’t really comprehend that we were able to work with artists of this caliber.
This is the first comic I’ve written, and so I was still wondering how all our scripts would come out after being interpreted by the artist. There’s a sequence in chapter two with a collage of a conversation that passes through a bunch of scenarios across a double page spread, and when Jason Howard sent us his pencils of that section, I started to believe that this world Doc and I had dreamed up could actually be realized.
I also have to say that I’m a huge Glenn Fabry fan. We gave him some of our weirdest pages, and his beautifully textured detail is everything we hoped for and more.
DW: The Lab Press had us submit a list of dream artists we’d be dying to work with. We did, thinking–well, they’ll never be able to get these… But they did!!! They didn’t tell me that they’d gotten Bill Sienkiewicz for a cover, who has been a very important artist to me since childhood. Instead they just revealed to me the fully finished cover at a party at New York Comic Con as a big surprise, and I just about lost it. It’s such an amazing cover. And it’s so Bill while still being so ESSENTIALS!
AIPT: Do you have a fave sci-fi book/film/show/etc. that maybe made its way into this project in some way (intentionally or not)?
LA: Doc is a font of sci-fi knowledge, and our original scripts were stuffed full of amazing references. Eventually, we decided to remove most of them before sending the scripts to artists because we didn’t want to cloud their minds with other visuals before we could see what their imaginations offered up. On quick flip though, you could see references to Alien, The Blob, and Night of the Living Dead, but we’ve done our best to use that imagery as a starting block to build something weirder.
AIPT: Why should anyone support the forthcoming Kickstarter for ESSENTIALS?
LA: Because this book is done and it’s incredible. We’re teaming up with Kickstarter because it’s the best way to get the books out to everyone around the world. We’re not asking for support to get it finished or anything like that. Not long after we launch, the book will be out of the printers and in your hands.
DW: We love our weird little story, and we want to tell more of it in the future, but we’ll only get the chance to do that if people read and love this one. We want to get the word out any way we can, so backers will find and support and read the book. It’s strange, it’s heady, and it’s not for everyone, but the people who it’s for– we hope– will really love it!
Huge thank you to @jamespotterthefirst for the fun template! Enjoy!
Natalie’s Exes:
Josh:
Natalie dated casually throughout high school but Josh was her first serious boyfriend in college.
He was also her first heartbreak. After a year of dating, he broke it off with her, calling her clingy and stating he wanted his “freedom” back. Natalie was devastated after the breakup.
Damien:
A year later, Nat’s BFF Dani introduced her to Damien at a party held by a mutual friend.
Nat and Damien hit it off right away and started dating shortly after they met.
The two were together for roughly 4 years and had begun discussing moving in together and getting married, when their plans came crashing to a halt.
Damien was offered an engineering position at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. It was a great work opportunity for him and he didn’t want to turn it down; but Nat had another year of med school left and she didn’t want to leave the East Coast.
Over the course of several conversations, the two eventually decided to break up, not wanting to endure the strain of a long-distance relationship.
The two have remained friends over the years.
For a long time, Damien still held a torch for Natalie. She is his “one who got away.”
Ethan’s Exes:
Elizabeth:
Ethan met Elizabeth in Chemistry class during his Undergrad period at Johns Hopkins.
She was an exchange student from the UK studying for her Communications degree.
She and Ethan hit it off right away, constantly flirting and hanging out with each other at any given opportunity.
After they started dating, Elizabeth extended her stay in the States for another two years. The relationship got so serious that they had begun talking about their future together.
Eventually, their relationship fizzled out, and the two grew apart, realizing they were better off as friends. They’re still good friends to this day.
Aside from Natalie, Elizabeth is the only other romantic partner Ethan has ever said ‘I love you’ to.
Gwen:
Ethan met Gwen during med school and was immediately enraptured by her.
Tobias was also enraptured by Gwen and the two immediately began to compete for Gwen’s affections.
Ethan won out at first when he and Gwen were paired for a project in class. The two flirted the entire time and when Ethan asked her out to dinner, she agreed.
The two dated for a year and a half before Gwen broke his heart, by dumping him abruptly, with no warning. Less than a week later, Ethan saw Gwen and Tobias kissing, furthering the growing animosity between the two men.
Tobias and Gwen dated for two years after that incident before she also broke Tobias’ heart and dumped him on their anniversary.
Ethan and Tobias have since fixed their broken friendship and neither man has spoken to or seen Gwen since Med School.
Harper:
Ethan and Harper became fast friends during their residencies. They were both ambitious, hard-working, and determined to be the best. They often tied for the top spot during their intern year.
One night, while working late at the hospital, Harper kissed Ethan for the first time. That kiss led to an on and off relationship for the two for the next five years.
Their separations were often either mutually agreed upon or after a big fight. The two would date casually during their ‘off’ periods but they always went back to each other.
Their final break-up was when Harper accepted the Chief of Medicine position. Ethan’s morals wouldn’t allow himself to date his boss so he broke it off for the final time, much to Harper’s disappointment.
The two have since come to the conclusion that they’re much better off as friends.
A/N: Tagging separately.
Essentials: Black Sails Star Luke Arnold Pens New Sci-Fi Graphic Novel
Check out the star-studded debut from publisher The Lab Press.
by Jesse Schedeen
The Lab Press is one of the newest publishers on the comic book scene, and they've got quite the star-studded lineup for their debut graphic novel. Essentials is a new sci-fi adventure written by Black Sails star Luke Arnold and animator Chris "Doc" Wyatt.
With the crowdfunding campaign for Essentials live now, IGN can exclusively debut a preview of this new graphic novel. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:
(Link for slideshow gallery)
Essentials also features a very impressive lineup of artists, including DaNi (Sandman Universe: The Dreaming), Glenn Fabry (Preacher), Jason Howard (Transformers), Vince Locke (A History of Violence), Brendan McCarthy (Spider-Man: Fever), Andrea Mutti (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), M.K. Perker (Air) and a cover by Bill Sienkiewicz (New Mutants). The book's colorists include Jordie Bellaire, Brad Simpson and Wesley Wong. The creative team also features letterer DC Hopkins of AndWorld Design and designer Emma Price.
Here's the official description for Essentials:
In Essentials, mathematician Harris Pax predicted the end of the world, but failed to prevent it. Now he’s living alone in a bunker and his niece’s favorite toys are starting to talk to him. The good news? He’s not the world’s sole survivor. The bad news? The other survivors are trapped in alternate realities — trapped in imagined worlds full of zombies, pterodactyls, and chaos. And now Harris Pax and an unlikely ally must travel the country on a quest to restore reality, save humanity, and defeat his new interdimensional nemesis: Snuggles.
“The great joy of writing Essentials is that when it comes to setting and genre, we can do anything we want," Arnold tells IGN. "Each stage of our heroes’ quest involves them entering the subjective reality of someone else. This “bubble reality” has been unconsciously formed from the mind of the person inside: a zombie apocalypse that has grown out of someone’s fear for their family’s protection, a mighty throne for a man being crushed by responsibility, and for a ravenous collector who’s disgusted by his own desires… well, you’ll want to see that one for yourself.”
“We visit such different realities in Essentials that the thought occurred to us, if each reality were presented by a different artist, not only would we get to work with a variety of cool people, but there’d be a very clear visual difference between the realities," says Wyatt. "We honestly didn’t think The Lab Press would go for it, because it creates a lot more work for them to coordinate all of those artists… but they’re crazy, so they agreed to it.”
Wyatt is keeping plenty busy these days thanks to his collectible company Wandering Planet Toys. IGN recently got an exclusive look at the second series of figures based on the classic sci-fi series The Prisoner.
In other comic book news, Josh Gad is making his comics debut with The Writer, and a copy of Action Comics #1 just became the most expensive comic ever.
