It is 5:00 AM and I am awake having thoughts about a Daikenyako fic where Yolei asks Ken out and Ken is surprised because he did not think she still had feelings for him after all this time and Davis and he are kind of in love but they haven’t talked about it even though they both know. Ken tells Yolei he needs to think about it and goes to Davis and is like “Yolei asked me out.” And Davis is immediately like “Wow so are you gonna go out with her?” trying to be a good friend.

At which point Ken is confused and surprised because t h e y b o t h k n o w and says something like “You want me to? You’d be okay with that?” at which point Davis thinks Ken means because Davis has feelings for Yolei and later Davis talks to Yolei who probably called to freak out about asking Ken out and how he hadn’t said yes or no yet and Davis tells her he thinks Ken was worried Davis would be upset. Yolei makes a joke about them being married and Ken needing Davis’ permission to see someone else. Davis tries to change the subject by making light of Ken’s worry about his feelings for Yolei by denying he has ever had any.*

Yolei confesses to having had feelings for Davis’ probably since MaloMyotismon days and then registers what Davis said and is immediately offended Davis doesn’t have even a little crush on her - how dare he? Yolei would be a great girlfriend!

This absolutely devolves into an argument about the merits of dating one another and Ken gets dragged into it and they all slowly realize they like each other and should date. OR in an extreme version this culminates in them going on literal dates to prove they would be great significant others to one another and Ken is just there like “Um?? So I guess we are all dating now?” after like the third or fourth time they all end up “hanging out” on his or Davis couch somehow having a date night.

*also this probably takes place in the version of reality in which Davis is Ace and spent waaaaaay too much time in his youth overcompensating and fixating on having feelings for Kari. I like to think maybe it was Yolei who helped him come to terms with it all and that is when Davis first developed feelings for her.

Funny, Anon!!!!!! ~~~~~ I don’t really have defined opinions on the series that come after the first four, with the exception of Appmon and Ghost Game. So, sorry if I will skip those other three!

Adventure 01

• Mimi: My princess💕. Along with Katara from ATLA, she’s my own definition of what a girl character should be written like, but I don’t think you want to read long explanations😂.

• Michi: Mimi was a second mc by Taichi’s side. I feel like she had a mirror role in comparison with Taichi’s, as if she’s some sort of girl icon for the franchise. I don’t know how to explain it, but she has got so much presence in the anime, in the merch, in posters; she is voiced by AIM which allowed her to have her own ending, and somehow it feels like this fact makes her omnipresent in the history of the Digimon anime. Wishful thinking, but I like them together because of so many other reasons. THEY JUST CLICK SO WELL.

-Adventure 02

•Miyako: I know I know, she’s not that jewel of character when it comes to her writing, bur her concept has always intrigued me even when I didn’t know Digimon that well. She’s funny, clever, she’s connected with Mimi, she’s also got such a cute design ngl. Can I say she’s my favourite because of these shallow reasons? I think I will find many others when I rewatch 02.

• Daiyako: MY GUILTY PLEASURE. They’re so precious in each other’s regards, always being in the middle of teasing sessions but eventually showing to care about each other so much ? They can work platonically too, and I love pairings that are amazing both platonically and romantically.

-Tamers

KINDA HARD, I will admit it. I like the characters from Tamers but I don’t feel that connected to them. I used to have a huge adoration for Jenrya but it faded somehow. I like Ruki and Hirokazu but not that excessively. I relate to Juri sometimes but she has got so many moments that make me cringe out. It’s … A complex relationship…

• Takato: Again, I’m not THAT attached to him but he is a huge cinnamoroll and a great new beginning for the franchise. I like he’s so ordinary and creative, because…I can relate🤣. And I admit people often call me a girl Takato, sooooo🤣. Like you can see, I don’t have anything to say ahahahha.

• Rukato: MY BBIES, my bbies who are so pleasant at the sight too, thanks to their matching palettes. I confess I come from being a huge Jenruki shipper. Then, I’ve grown bored of those two and I’ve started getting so attracted by Ryouki and Rukato, but the latter eventually won especially because of Runaway Locomon. How could I keep myself from shipping those two after that film? I know there’s Jurato, but the future dramas made me dislike the way things develop…

-Frontier

• Junpei: my only prince son💕

• Junzumi.

SHOULD I REALLY SAY SOMETHING, C’MON🤣💕💕💕💕💕

- Appmon

• Eri: I like how she finally brought back a kind of digigirl who could be considered a real character with an interesting story, a nice and quirky personality, meaningful relationships. I had got tired of so many sexualized and pretty uninspiring digigirls (starting from Frontier era SIGH).

Eeeeh I don’t know. I liked Eri and Torajirou but I’ve discovered he’s 11 and she’s 14, so ehmmmmm. Even if the anime pushed it a bit, maybe it’s not the case to ship them ahaha.

I’ll go with • Haru x Yuujin because they are a parallel Jurato✨.

-Ghost Game

• Emma: I KNOW SHE IS NOT PART OF THE TRIO AND SHE APPEARED FOR LESS THAN AN EPISODE, but she ensnared me and makes me salty whenever I see her, because she would have been a perfect four member. Leave me alone, I need to cry and mope.

• Ruri x Kiyoshiro: The total flop this shipping was because in GG the kids had 0 interesting interactions and I want to cry again, because why is that anime so unfair. Still, I ship them, I don’t care. Ruri had her small teasing moments with Kiyoshiro and their personalities CLASH. Idk Ruri would take him to the worst night trips in forests, parks and he would tag along because Jellymon’s and Ruri’s personalities are so perfectly aligned!

First Time for First Times

So I wanted to give myself a little writing challenge once I saw I was coming up on 400k words on AO3, to hit 400k words EXACTLY with whatever I wrote next. And after a little fun shitposting about Daiyako with the Camp Digimonth crew, I couldn’t resist it, and I finally had to write something I’ve wanted to write since my Digimon Adventure 02 rewatch.

(Also, this is my 30th work on AO3, too! That’s neat!)

Summary: As high school has come, Davis and Yolei find themselves bored as their best friends are busy with their own extracurriculars. So what are two teens to do when they're stuck by themselves with nothing to do?

Ugh, why did Ken have to be so busy?

And why did Kari have to be so busy?

And why did they have to be so busy when soccer season was done?

Davis was sitting on the stairs leading to the first floor of their high school, taking one last, longing look over his shoulder at the student council room that Ken and Kari were currently in. He was happy that his friends had things to do, but now that he didn’t have practice everyday, after school was a lot more boring. Cody was still in middle school, the older DigiDestined were off starting their adult lives…

“Ugh, why do Kari and Ken have to be so busy?”

Davis’s ears perked at the familiar female voice, turning around to see Yolei folding her arms in frustration.

“Join the club,” he told her, which caused her to jump in place before she turned to look at him.

“No detention today?” she shot back teasingly, which caused Davis to gently flush.

“I don’t get detention!” He paused for a beat. “…That much.”

He hadn’t in nearly two weeks now! Did she always have to do this?

“Well, if you did it would at least give you something to do until student council is done,” Yolei said. Davis sighed.

“…Yeah.”

Yolei stepped over and sat next to him.

“Why don’t you get detention then?” Davis asked. Yolei’s mouth scrunched up. Davis knew he had successfully started to push her buttons and had to hold back a grin.

“Because I’m going to be going to a good university. I don’t need that shit on my record!”

“I’m gonna go to school too,” he huffed, “Culinary school, but still.”

Davis looked over at the student council door again, then at his friend, “Well why didn’t you join student council?” he asked.

“Because I am not a student council type of person. That and I need to focus on running the computer club.”

Yolei pulled her knees to her chest and glumly set her chin on them.

“You said it,” she said, sighing after.

“I’m happy they’re doing this because they’re both perfect for it, but…”

“It’s boring without them?” Davis asked. Yolei narrowed her eyes at him, leaning back with hands splayed behind her.

“Oh, I see, I’m too boring for you.”

Now Davis was caught off-guard, his eyes wide, “No! That’s not what I mean!” he shouted. He continued to insist it wasn’t that, and Yolei was all too happy to let him squirm for a few moments.

“Dude, I’m teasing.”

Davis let out a sigh of relief.

“But it’s boring without them, yeah.”

The two teens fell into silence, the only sound coming from the occasional footsteps down one of the hallways.

“We just need something to do while they’re busy with stupid student council,” Davis sighed.

“At least the days that I don’t have computer club and you aren’t in detention,” Yolei nodded. Davis narrowed his eyes at her.

Yolei shot him a dazzling smile she learned from Mimi, and Davis couldn’t stop the slight red tinge on his cheeks.

“S-Since when did she know how to do that…?”

He looked her up and down and felt weird that, despite all the times he had seen her in her uniform, in a dress, or a skirt, this was the first time he seemed to see her in a way that wasn’t just “one of the guys”.

Yolei caught on and blushed, too, whipping her head straight forward as it slowly became stronger.

“Ugh, you’re so annoying, you know…” she mumbled.

“That’s funny coming from you.”

Yolei was glad her hair was covering part of her face, able to obscure her blush slightly as her face continued to burn.

There was no one around. It was like a game of chicken to see who would look at the other first, both blushing like mad and both staring straight ahead, refusing to be the one who broke first.

“So…” Davis trailed off, unsure what he was going to say in the first place.

“What?” she asked. Davis turned towards her.

Davis couldn’t say anything, throat suddenly dry as his eyes zeroed in on her lips. He was so focused that he missed the fact that her blush overtook her entire face and the tips of her ears.

“Seriously, what…?” she asked again, though her whispering hushed entirely as he scooted forward. The two of them stared directly into each other’s eyes before his lips crashed against hers in a messy kiss.

Yolei immediately kissed back, which caused Davis’s brain to overload. He had to chase away the fact of who he was kissing because the kiss itself was so nice.

She wrapped her arms around his neck to pull herself closer to him, while Davis kept his arms hanging loosely at his sides, having no idea what to do with them.

Frankly, he had to focus all of his brain power on this kiss.

And making sure he wasn’t focused on the girl kissing him was also making sure it wasn’t the most awkward first kiss in history. So instead, he did his best to try and go with the flow, though the two began an awkward battle for control, jerking back and forth as each tried to go deeper than the other could.

Eventually, Davis raised his hands and awkwardly moved them to her waist, internally kicking himself in those few moments that his brain seemed to spark activity outside of needing to kiss Yolei.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they pulled away, panting heavily to catch their breath, still focused on each other.

In an instant everything came crashing down around them, and the realization that they had just made out with each other hit with the most intense force imaginable.

Yolei slowly moved her arms away, pulling a face as she wriggled her way out of his touch.

“Oh my god, we just made out.”

“W-We just made out…” Davis repeated slowly.

Did she not like it? Was it bad? …Did his breath stink?

“Why did you do that!?” she asked, pushing herself forward as she jabbed a finger into his face in an exaggerated manner. Davis let out a yelp as he fell back, grabbing onto the handrail behind him to stop from tumbling down the stairs.

“I-I dunno! You were just lookin’ really pretty! A-and your lips looked nice and I—”

Davis clenched his eyes shut from embarrassment, not seeing that Yolei’s jaw dropped.

“Y-You thought I was pretty?” she asked quietly.

“Well, yeah…” he mumbled, looking away from her, “I dunno, I mean, you’ve always been a girl, but I guess I finally saw you as a girl,” he shrugged.

The red from Yolei’s face cleared in an instant, instantly reminding her this was Davis Motomiya she was dealing with, and she narrowed her eyes at him.

“Gee, thanks,” she deadpanned. He opened his eyes and looked at her, withering under her gaze.

“No, I mean like… ugh, I dunno!” he groaned as he scratched his head, “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to like, do that! I thought about kissing a pretty girl! I thought it was a nice kiss!”

Yolei blinked.

“…It was a nice kiss,” she admitted.

“Yeah?” Davis asked, his heart suddenly fluttering.

She nodded.

“D-Do you wanna, you know… do that again?” he asked slowly and hopefully. Yolei couldn’t help the way the end of her mouth turned into the slightest tick of a smirk.

“Do what?” she challenged. Davis ducked his head.

“You know, kiss…”

Her smirk got wider, and Davis suddenly felt like he awakened some sort of monster.

Not that he’d say that out loud, lest he actually wish to suffer Yolei’s wrath.

“Sure, but not here,” she said, looking around, “I don’t want Ken and Kari to see us. Let’s get ramen,” she paused, “And then kiss.”

Davis got excited at the prospect of ramen, but immediately tempered his mood, “I’m not gonna buy your ramen though.”

Yolei let out a whine and pouted in a way that Davis knew he was going to pay for her ramen.

Thankfully Davis’s favorite ramen spot was mostly empty before the dinner rush. They’d already gotten and eaten their food considering how hungry they were, and had quickly gone back to kissing.

Yolei was embarrassed at the idea of making out with Davis like this in public, knowing it was nowhere near appropriate, but she told herself that it would be fine as long as she didn’t come back here.

The food was pretty good, though… maybe she could have Davis buy for her in exchange for more kissing…

Neither could stop thinking about how nice it was to kiss the other, and Yolei couldn’t stop thinking about how Davis called her lips “soft” on the walk over, thinking the exact same thing about his right now.

Sure, she never thought about Davis romantically, but this wasn’t romantic! They were two friends making out because their friends were busy.

“There’s nothing wrong with that,” she thought as her tongue shot into his mouth again.

The pair continued to vie for control, and her hand rested gently against his cheek. She didn’t care about how ridiculous they undoubtedly looked, though. She didn’t even process the bell at the door ringing, nor the surprised gasp of one of the people who entered.

“Yolei?”

“Davis?”

She did process that, though, and the two immediately pulled away, absolutely horrified that Kari and Ken were there, but the two looked more surprised than anything.

“I-I hope we didn’t interrupt anything!” Kari squeaked out, holding her hands up.

Ken grimaced, “We were going to get something while we talked about some student council duties, but…”

“…We can just go somewhere else,” Kari finished before they awkwardly waved goodbye to their friends and slowly walked out.

“Wait!” Yolei shouted, “It’s not what you think!”

“Y-Yeah! We were making out for fun!”

“There was nothing serious about it at all! I mean it’s Davis!”

Davis glared at her, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Yolei ignored him and instead ran out after their friends.

“Seriously, guys! Let me explain!”

Davis mumbled under his breath as he pulled out his wallet and slapped some bills on the table, then tore off after them.

He’d have to convince Yolei to find some way for them to make out in secret…

Fandom Shipping Polls - Daisuke Motomiya Shipping Analysis (Poll I + Poll II)

As pointed out in the main post, every single Chosen Child will get their individual analysis post to check on the status of the current popularity of their ships. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Daisuke, shall we!

The overall results / spreadsheet

Disclaimer: As the “Someone from 01/02″ and “Others” options from poll 1 and the “Someone from 01/02″ option from poll 2 have been excluded from the final analysis due to redundancy reasons and all results were culminated in another “final count”, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like:

Overall votes: 132 (approx. 110 in sum after the exclusion), the main poll got 93 votes, the secondary poll got 39 votes.

The “Others” choice in the main poll received 3% (approx. 3 votes) and 0% (0 votes) in the secondary poll. The comments/tags did not specify any preferences here (aside from characters that were already part of the main choices).

Ship Analysis

1st place: It should come to nobody’s surprise that Ken (52%) singlehandedly swept this poll without facing any kind of serious competition at any time of the voting. Daiken is one of the most popular mlm Digimon ships on the planet - and for good reasons, as their anime portrayal provides for some very intense and intriguing mutual character development. Not only do they start off as “enemies” (with one of the parties unknowingly holding lots of the admiration for the other), but them turning into friends - and Jogress partners - is one of the most significant development fuels for both of them; nurturing each other’s (self) confidence while growing closer, developing great fondness, attachment and protectiveness for each other as they get more and more comfortable with themselves and in the other’s presence. It’s an endearing framing with a lot of heart, and with the additional anticipation of more news on the 02 movie, it’s really no surprise to see them being as prevalent and beloved in fandom as they are at the moment.

2nd place: With a huge gap to 1st place, Takeru (11%) takes his seat on 2nd place. As mentioned in Takeru’s own analysis, this makes a lot of sense; their popularity here may be explained by the idea that Daisuke is supposed to be a foil to Takeru in a similar way Taichi is to Yamato - even though their dynamic as so called “rivals” does not play out in the same way at all. Despite the occasional bickering, it’s portrayed to be more lighthearted, especially on Takeru’s behalf, who likes to tease Daisuke, making for a mutually challenging, yet very playful - and most importantly: more soft - dynamic.

3rd place: Daisuke is the second character after Mimi who had SEVERAL people competing for third place, resulting in a three-way-tie between Miyako, Hikari and Wallace, with each of them snatching 8% of the votes. And again, taking a very close look at canon, all of these choices make sense; Miyako proves to be companion Daisukes has a teasing and competitive, yet supportive and familiar relationship with; Hikari is portrayed as someone Daisuke heavily crushes on at first and tries to compete with Takeru to get her attention and affection over, but once that quietly mellows out, they prove to have a soft, mutually trusting bond; last but not least, Wallace is a movie-only character with a flirty, teasing attitude towards Daisuke while also making him want to fight for his sake and sad backstory.

Honorary mentions: As the majority of votes has been distributed among the choices mentioned above, there isn’t much left to be mentioned - yet characters that got more than 1 vote include Taichi (3%), Koushiro (3%), Sora (2%) and Michael (2%).

“The 1 vote squad”: This spot is reserved for Iori, Yamato, Mimi and Jou (1% each).

“0 votes go to…”: Interestingly, Daisuke is the only character in whose poll EVER SINGLE main character received at least one vote.

What did the other polls say?

Daisuke won Ken’s poll (61%) with one of the biggest margins and also came in second Takeru’s poll (18%), thus mirroring his own results to a high degree.

However, he doesn’t appear in the top 3 rankings for the other characters and actually has a tendency to come in fourth a lot, namely in Hikari’s (9%), Miyako’s (15%), Iori’s (9%), Taichi’s (10%) and Yamato’s (7%) polls.

Thus, for the majority of the rest, he was merely a niche choice, such as Sora (3%), Koushiro (2%) and Jou (1%).

Mimi is the only character in whose poll he did not get a single vote - she herself had received 1 vote in his though.

Notable additions / comments / thoughts

Daisuke’s polls stand out for the fact that he received the fourth most votes overall (after Taichi, Ken and Takeru) - which is quite ironic if you consider that he also appears to be the KING of getting fourth place, thus missing the podium for third place 5 times overall.

These facts aside, he is, as mentioned, the only character whose polls had every of the other 11 Chosen Children get represented by at least 1 vote. It shall not be overlooked that the sample size is still comparably low of course. Thus, I really hope to reach a wider audience if I choose to repeat the polls once the fandom is not as quiet as it is right now. However, the idea that Daisuke has enough followers that every possible combination had at least 1 fan is very interesting.

Seeing Daiken sweep the entire voting overall is really no surprise, as they appear to have a very passionate group of followers, artists and writers alike, not only on tumblr, but on various internet spaces - regardless of country, even after all this time. This may or may not be assigned to the growing anticipation of the 02 movie as well as for a general demand of more 02 related content after the Adventure 01 cast received a lot of exposure in the past years. Overall, for the reasons mentioned above (and beyond, thanks to their portrayal), Daiken has always been going strong, despite never having been canonized.

The comments in the tags have only referred to the already mentioned choices. The “Others” option did not receive any further votes in the second poll, indicating that all the most viable choices have been covered by poll 1 and 2. Usually, the option is reserved for OC ships, for when people prefer to not ship a character at all or when they’re considered asexual (which will definitely be a future option to include as well!).
