#oc stuff #aj art #No they’re not ancient Roman they’re simply ancient Roman adjacent #bc I didn’t want to have to account for historical accuracy. In this case It gets in the way of my storytelling. #Their society was mostly inspired by Ancient Greek and Roman culture though as well as some other stuff lumped in.

I based it mostly on 1940's America!

Some media that I've used for inspiration range from noir/neo-noir movies like The Blue Dahlia (1946) and The Detective (1968) as well as games like L.A. Noire of course

I watched it.

Honestly, many of the secondary and background characters aren't terribly costumed. But Dakota Fucking Johnson's Fucking Side-Bangs...god. Why. Also HATS. PUT SOME GODDAMN HATS ON THOSE GODDAMN REGENCY WOMEN.

I haven't read Persuasion yet- just reserved it at the library, actually -but this seems. Rather Not It, from what I've heard about the book? I'm concerned because the director seems to be one of those who thinks the past is somehow inherently staid and boring and needs to be made Shiny and Modern to liven it up. Which, as that popular post from yesterday said...why even make a historical piece if you feel that way?

Always a fan of racially diverse casting in period dramas. But is it just me, or does it unfortunately seem to happen in Certified Rancid movies and shows more than decent ones? Characters of Color In Actually Good Period Dramas 2k22. God knows it's too long in coming.

(Which reminds me, I need to watch David Copperfield and The Gilded Age. And re-watch Mystery of the Eiffel Tower. Thank heaven, there are some outliers to the trend.)

I kinda wonder what if Disney princess line were to add another Native American? I feel that the best bet is it should be a story based on an indigenous tale or myth, not on RL like Pocahontas.

I feel like it'd be better to stay away from Native myths & just make up a whole new character. White people already have a weird fixation on Indigenous spirituality & legends, so I imagine any story they decide to tell from Native myth, they will inevitably butcher it in some way, no matter how much information or accurate cultural/historical reference & advice there is at their disposal, & the attention it gets will bring shit like appropriative weirdos, racist fan arts, blatant disrespect of literal Native religions, etc, so I do NOT want to see Disney do that.

Even look at what Disney did with Moana. Despite the fact that there's a lot of generally accurate stuff (like some of the clothing, architecture, the boats, the story of Polynesians voyaging for a long time & then just stopping, & even a few bits of Maui's legends), & Moana herself isn't based on any real person, they STILL made it pan-oceanic (like the equivalent to pan-Indian, but we're talking about Pacific Islanders here) instead of just choosing one culture & decided to mix them together. You see influences from Tāgata Samoa, Māori, Kānaka Maoli, Mā’ohi, Tongans, Rapa Nui, & I think even Tuvalu people. Plus some of the horrific merchandise that came later, like selling a Maui costume that featured a bodysuit with his tattoos SKIN (& this is horrific especially because of the history of white colonizers killing and selling the bodies of tattooed polynesians, like specifically Māori men with tā moko, specifically so they could display them as "curiosities" & as trophies).

Moana comparatively is a pretty big improvement from Pocahontas, but even so, even like some 20 years later Disney still fucked up with their handling of her, & did so for the sake of money. They ARE coming out with Tigerlily & Peter Pan soon, but I'm not totally convinced. I know someone who's been the cultural consultant for the movie & even though he seems optimistic, based on what he's told me, & what I know about Disney, I'm. Hm not so optimistic.

#I've said this before but Disney will ALWAYS sacrifice historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity in the name of marketability #& I don't mean that as in I'm angry Belle isn't wearing a powdered wig in BATB #or that there isnt a plague or Aurora isn't wearing a wimple in Sleeping Beauty #or that nobody looks remotely Danish in The Little Mermaid despite apparently being set there #I mean as in shit like this where they aged up a 10 year old so she could be quote ''hot'' in Pocahontas #or like what I mentioned with Moana #or the orientalism in Aladdin #or the fact that they say Kristoff is Saami but then make this new culture in Frozen 2 that is also Saami but not Saami for some reason

I finished Dangerous by Minerva Spencer and I have a lot of thoughts about the ramifications of writing a (white) heroine who was kidnapped and brought to the harem of a pedophile Berber sultan which... I will perhaps expand on. Eventually.

I remember someone complaining about how inaccurate Disney Hercules was and then said we needed a movie about the romance between Hades and Persephone….

Umm… I love pop culture Hades and Persephone but it’s far from historically accurate. Hades is literally her uncle who kidnapped her when she was young. And Persephone was so broken about being kidnapped and away from her mother that she refused food. When Hades finally convinced her to eat one little thing (a pomegranate seed in some variations of the story), it turns out it was a trick and eating the seed binds her to his realm forever, making sure that she would always have to come back to him. This is why Zeus had to make it so that Demeter could have Persephone back half of the year and Hades had her the other half.

So next time you think about historical accuracy in pop culture interpretations of Greek mythology, remember that Hades is that creepy uncle who forced his young niece to marry him and then bind her to his realm forever so she will never be free of him. The only thing people think is ‘romantic’ about them is that they never cheated on each other and they got along better than most other gods and their spouses. But they weren’t exactly a happy couple, either. Hades nearly cheated on her with Minthe (in some iterations, he did) but Persephone immediately turned her into a mint plant when she found out… and then the plant in question became Hades most favored plant.
