it’s really funny to me that despite the fact that i hc that aldous vanderboom is snarky af and roasts people all the time with Incredibly Articulated Verbal Takedowns™, he is literally just bossed around by his (equally snarky) wife throughout a massive chunk of the mill

Conversation
Mr Owl: Mr Crow, please be careful in extracting cubes. Also Dale will be my successor as the owner of Rusty Lake.
Mr Crow: Yeah sure thing, boss.
Also Mr Crow: [Fucks with Dale severely through a series of puzzle boxes, makes Dale serve him coffee, laughs evilly when Dale thinks he's finally escaped the cube]

The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 25. Cycle
Tumblr media
Day 25. Cycle Crossover: Cube Escape Me: Bendy. No. Bendy: But it's a good idea! Me: No, it isn't. They are corrupted soul. You have corrupted body. Minus and minus don't make a plus in this case. Bendy: :c
If anyone doesn't know what this is about, I'll explain. Cube Escape is a series of point and click games created by Rusty Lake and telling the story of a very messed-up family... There is a lot of brutality, a lot of dreamlike things and metaphors, and the whole thing revolves around Rusty Lake - a lake where memories melt and get lost. The entire series is, so to speak, a psychological reflection on the consequences of our actions, dwelling on the past and tormenting ourselves with bad memories. Also reincarnation in contex corrupted soul. Bad memories can corrupt the soul, and corrupted souls... well... are creepy. Really, really creepy.
My first game in the Cube Escape series was, if I'm not mistaken, The Mill, and then I played Seasons (second one, first one is The Lake), and then I tried to play it in order. The plot is very complex and with each subsequent game we discover more fragments of the past of the Vanderboom family (and people associated with them). Certain recurring motifs and a feeling of anxiety create a unique atmosphere - a bit of horror, a bit of crime-story, a bit of psychological drama plus a very oneiric narrative. Is it enough if I say that after playing Case 23 (which, nomen-omen, I never finished), I had nightmares and was afraid to go to the toilet in the dark? And I played it when I was a grown woman X"D
I love this series and am looking forward to the next parts. We already know the history and fate of individual characters - but new threads are constantly emerging. I'm honestly waiting for the next chapter of Paradox (I hope there will be one more) and I just noticed that Underground Blossom, announced some time ago, has been released... Guess who won't be able to complete all the Ink Demonths before September? XD
I decided to have some fun here and make a gif. Art has a lot of symbolism - firstly, it is a perfect square. Secondly, the colour changing from white to black - also corresponds to the theme of black and white cubes (with bad and good memories). Plus both textes of Corrupted Soul come from "Cube Escape: Seasons" in inverse order :) I highly recommend the game. It's really great.

I was just going to reply to @sunshine-herricane under the original post, but I figured why not make a longer infodump. So, mind your spoilers and get ready to click a read more link, because it's time to enjoy my personal
Harvey lore rant
Harvey is one of the first two characters to be introduced to us in Cube Escape: Seasons along with Laura. It is known to us that he's a relevant character because otherwise Rusty Lake wouldn't bother to make Cube Escape: Harvey's Box, in which you play as him; plus, if he wasn't relevant you wouldn't need him alive to complete Seasons.
The thing is, I think it's easy to forget about him, or brush him off as a secondary character, since we only see him as a sort of "sidekick". Apart from Harvey's Box, he just makes minor appearances and gets nearly killed by Laura on various occasions (Think of the scene in Cube Escape: The Mill in which Laura, as a corrupted soul, almost chokes him to death).
Things change with Rusty Lake Hotel, where, if you manage to give Owl the Rusty Lake Cigars, it's revealed you're playing as Harvey. This is huge, because at this point you find out that Harvey isn't just a pet, but a character that can be compared to Mr Owl or Mr Crow, which up to this point are the people playing puppeteer with the other characters of the plot.
This is why it's logical to imagine that Harvey's role, in this situation, is to act as a butler for Mr Owl, and one can easily assume that it was Owl's idea to kill the hotel guests. In other words, Owl is the boss, and Harvey is just following orders, whether he likes killing those animal-people or not.
Before getting to Paradise, I think it's important to make a quick stop through Cube Escape: Birthday, in which we see him with his humanoid form for the first time:
Tumblr media
And we also get to see an interesting piece of lore about the corrupted souls of the hotel guests breaking free from their containers and attacking both Harvey and Mr Owl. This way we learn that Harvey is also a shapeshifter, and contrary to Owl or Crow, who have a human and a hybrid form, Harvey seems to be naturally a bird that somehow achieved this (I'm assuming) "enlightened" state of half bird, half human.
This is important information because it indicates that Harvey is likely immortal. This is in line with Rusty Lake Roots: judging from that level in the Emma storyline, Harvey is around the lake in 1891, and is also around Laura's death (1971 according to Cube Escape: Case 23). Now, I know nothing about parrots, but 80+ years is a pretty long life for a parrot that seems suspiciously to never age.
One could argue that this could be just a similar parrot or whatever, but we also know that Hotel takes place in 1893, and Harvey is definitely in that game at least.
Now we get to the infamous Paradise Easter Egg: it's fairly missable, but you can find Harvey sitting on the window sill during the third plague
Tumblr media
This happens in 1796. And being Paradise Mr Owl's origin story, well, this is clearly evidence that Harvey has been around longer than him. This is a theory of mine- but he probably was Caroline's pet, or the one that sparked her research around the lake and immortality.
Point is, this is a huge turn on the Harvey-Owl dynamic: where at first Harvey seemed to be a servant, now he feels a lot more like an equal. At this point of the story I thought that Harvey could've been the one to suggest to Owl to take revenge on his family/hotel guests, and Owl could've been the one saying "let's go for murder".
Except that underground blossom came out.
I won't share screenshots of it because it's another stance of the Rusty Lake franchise being weird about nipples, plus I don't want to spoil much of that game, but to cut it short: toward the last few stations, Harvey decides to torture a pickpocketer for stealing Rose's timepiece.
This is another strong statement about Harvey's personality, since it's clear that he really had no problem killing the various people during Hotel. This puts a bunch of things into perspective, because I mean, c'mon, he deliberately hurts unaware bystanders who just steal shit and aren't really involved (so far) in the plot. One could've said that the Hotel guests "deserved" it (since it's clear they aren't really pleasant or good people either, even before Paradise came out), or again, Harvey was just doing what he's told. But this one scene screams "Harvey is a sadistic bitch" and at this point I'm not even mad about it.
Now the only thing left to find out is when he actually gains his human form- but by the looks of it, the clues are pointing towards him being the oldest immortal bird-person in the lore, and probably the one who knows the real secret to reach ascension and enlightenment.

Death Game Stories: Part 2
I said I'd keep going, so let's keep this train going! My first post was about the PARTICIPANTS in the death game. (Please click that if you want to see part 1!) This part, therefore, will continue down my list of four parts of the death game: Gameplay!
Tumblr media
[Image ID: The "Seek a Way Out!" screen from Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma. There is dynamic typography, with a graphic of an exit sign on the right and a key at the bottom. End ID.]
This one is probably the hardest to really boil down into categories like I'd want to. Even so, there are multiple types I can say to start with.
1. Kill the other participants.
This one is self-explanatory. These games often end up with a "Last Man Standing" ending, with just the protagonists alive. It's also a rather common plotline, showing up in:
Judge (manga)
Hunger Games (books)
Battle Royale (movies)
Incite Mill (manga)
Danganronpa (video game)
Future Diary (manga)
Btooom! (manga)
This plotline often ends up with a lot of fight scenes, arguments, and dead bodies. It's often impossible for everyone to live, as well-- Although some people might try. (More on that in the next post.) The main aspect of this gameplay style is this: The participants are the ones to kill the others. There can be outside motivations, but the participants must be the ones to actually kill most often.
2. Win smaller games.
This one frequently will use demented versions of well-known games. I use "games" as a loose term, as well. It's more often in money-based stories, with some examples being these:
Death Bell (movie): Multiple small puzzles.
Zero Escape (video game series): Multiple escape rooms.
Squid Game (tv show): Multiple children's games.
As the Gods Will (manga): Multiple children's games.
Die Now (manga): Variety of games.
Choose or Die (movie): Multiple choices.
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor (anime): Multiple games.
Alice in Borderland (manga): Multiple games.
Gantz (manga): Multiple hunts.
There are so, SO many for this one. Doing multiple rounds, often with different games, is a very popular option. It's a good way to shake things up a lot, after all. However, it does take a lot of creativity to keep coming up with interesting options, so it can be difficult as well. In video games, though, this is a good way to build up the gameplay loop.
3. Survive longer than the others
There's some games where people keep getting picked off, but it's hard to say anything else about it. For some examples:
King's Game (manga)
Would You Rather (movie)
It's a bit hard to come up with more off the top of my head, but these ones are examples of where the goal is just to live a while longer.
4. Escape!
This one can be an aspect of other gameplay types as well, fun fact! In fact, it usually is. Here's a few of the ones where it shows up, and if it has another type as well.
Zero Escape (video game series) - Also a Type 2.
The Hunt (movie) - Nope.
Cube (movie) - Nope.
As the Gods Will (manga) - Also a Type 2.
Saw (movies) - Depends on the movie and the game.
Alice in Borderland (manga) - Also a Type 2.
It's a good one to include with hunters and prey, or to have a lot of traps throughout. As a general goal, though, escape makes a lot of sense, so it's frequently used as a background goal. And, as you can see... Type 2 works wonderfully with that.
~
This is just a basic list, of course! There are other ones. Sometimes, it's a single game (Ready or Not, Circle) and sometimes it's more complicated than that (Your Turn to Die). Even so, those are just some options that show up throughout pop culture to draw ideas from.
Next post: We discuss the responses of the participants. It'll be shorter than the others, but it's still an important part of the death game as a whole.

Eyyyyyyyyy I didn't know it was your birthday soon! :D
Progress is steady on the Pharma story, slowly but surely getting there. I'm hoping it will be finished either by the end of the week or early next, fingers crossed!
In the meantime, here's a small taste as a birthday treat (this is the 1st draft so it might change later)
😴 - anon
Dark grey lines furrowed across the drunken mech’s faceplate, displaying an anger dulled by excessive engex consummation. His gaze drifted back to the human. “…but t’way it’s ‘currying ‘round, could be a stray…always wanted one –” “My friend,” Pharma interjected, smearing poison into the word as he rose fluidly out of his seat. His voice dropped to a low, hushed volume, meant exclusively for the other mech’s audial receptors. “I’m afraid you don’t understand the position you’re currently in, do you? Let me clarify it for you. You have two options here: either you can forget about this –” He clapped a servo on the swaying mech’s shoulder. Metal strained under his grip, a low creak emanating beneath his harsh fingertips. A confused flicker crossed over the inebriated faceplate. Pharma leaned towards his helm. “– or I’ll be sure to remember this moment the next time you wind up on my slab.” Then Pharma leant back with an easy smile. “Is that clear?” Judging by the perplexed pinch on his lichen-coloured faceplate, the threat didn’t quite register with the mech, too intoxicated to glean his insinuation. However, the realization that he wasn’t getting a free human tonight somehow did. The bot huffed, his expression sullen…but he spun away from Pharma and began to stagger his way out of the milling crowd, knocking into different pauldrons as he did – an admission of defeat.  Pharma scoffed under his breath as he relaxed back into his seat. Drunken imbecile.
He turned to pick up his drink, casting a cursory look down at the bar. But his left servo paused in mid-reach. The human was still there, exactly on the same spot where he last saw them. His optics narrowed by a fraction as intrigue glimmered in his processor. ...Huh. Humans are (in)famous for their fickle nerves. The number of times he has watched humans pointlessly running around on his slab, until they were corralled into place by their owners, was countless at this point. He had heard about their constant escape attempts, all ending with varying degrees of failure – some more fatal than others.   Pharma curled his servo back around his cube of engex. Then his gaze shifted back to the little organic. They fidgeted on the spot, their hand retreating back over their wrist – a self-soothing behaviour? – at the look which fell over them. What an odd creature. His back had been turned, it would’ve been the perfect opportunity for them to escape…so why didn’t they? However, the human straightened up where they stood. Then they gave him another cautious bow, dipping their eyes only for a moment to convey their gratitude before they darted back up to his faceplate. A smirk crept up on his lips, the realization suddenly clicked into place for him. Oh, I see. This one has a sense of moral duty that they cannot ignore. His dry smirk twitched again up, brimming with amusement. However, Pharma gave them no other acknowledgement as they rose up from their bow. Instead, he settled his arms back on the counter, then he lifted his helm and looked straight ahead. It was an inherent dismissal, releasing the human from any ridiculous sense of obligation that such an insignificant creature could hold. He raised his drink up to his lips, and took a long, thoughtful sip. He found himself replaying their little bows in his helm for a moment. How quaint…
AAAHHHHHH YESSSSSS THIS IS SO GOOD SO FAR!!!!! I cannot wait for the rest!!!! Gosh your narration is always so clear, you’re doing an amazing job so far! Take your time with the finished product, I’m looking forward to it!

please post the release order thing you mentioned!!!! :o
OK I JUST GOT HOME YES I CAN DO THIS. Um I’m going to list all of the cube escape games separately since a few games go in between BUT they are all part of the same game under the collection and you don’t really HAVE to play the others in between, you can just go through the collection and then go back, but there’s allusions to the other games so they make more sense when you do play them in order
Cube Escape: Seasons
Cube Escape: The Lake
Cube Escape: Arles
Cube Escape: Harvey’s Box
Cube Escape: Case 23
Cube Escape: The Mill
Rusty Lake: Hotel
Cube Escape: Birthday
Cube Escape: Theatre
Rusty Lake: Roots
Cube Escape: The Cave
Rusty Lake: Paradise
Cube Escape: Paradox
The White Door
Samsara Room*
The Past Within
Underground Blossom (releases in September!!)
*technically the original samsara room was released before even cube escape? but it was a flash game that wasn’t part of the cube escape series (I’m not sure if you can even still play it). however the 2020 remake is available for free on steam! (and actually has to do with the plot of the games)

another swissdrop fic - what have i become
wax play really, that's it, 1.3k, cut for length, nsfw obv,
read on ao3
Swiss has been tied up and on his back for almost two hours now and it didn’t look like he was going to be freed any time soon.
The room Dewdrop dragged him into looked inconspicuous, run-of-the-mill play rooms in the Abbey for all’s use. This one was specifically designed for ghouls, heavily reinforced for feral ghouls with a few magical items that the humans are not allowed to touch.
He was laying on the marble slap that takes up almost half the room, in a relatively uncomfortable position really. Dew had him stand on his knees before he pushed him on his back, his calves were next to his thighs, and his wrists were bound in magically reinforced handcuffs, keeping them above his head. His legs had numbed a long time ago, and now most of the pain came from his chest.
Dewdrop had been torturing him for hours. No, like, literal torture. Without malicious intent, sure, but still torture.
He had ripped Swiss’s pants right away, making him think that his cock was about to receive attention. He was wrong. That was all the attention his lower side received. Instead, Dew was focusing on his chest.
Swiss was covered in colorful candle wax.
He didn’t understand how he didn’t see the basket of candles and the bucket of ice that was in the corner of the room when he entered.
Since they started Dew had been lighting different candles and letting them melt while he traced ice all over Swiss’s chest, licking right after the ice. The changing heat levels drove Swiss crazy, the ice sending shivers down his spine followed by Dew’s warm mouth licking stripes against him shot all the blood in his body into his cock, which was ignored for so so long.
At one point, Dew brought the ice cube close to his crotch where precum had mixed with melted ice water and some wax, which made Swiss feel like he was about to explode if he didn’t get any friction on his cock.
He survived but at what cost.
Just as he thought the ice was getting comfortable and enjoyable, Dew grabbed one of the candles, the red one, and placed a menacing grin on his face, one that caused Swiss’s cock to twitch in anticipation.
He trailed a long clawed finger from Swiss’s throat to his chest, nail digging into the skin ever so slightly without drawing any blood. Once he found the middle of his sternum, he placed a light kiss there. Swiss was surprised at the tender moment, only to be shocked by the hot wax dripping on his chest right after.
In all technicality, the wax only hit his chest, yet he still felt like his whole body was on fire. A jolt of electricity ran through his spine, causing him to arch his back, and raise on his knees a little only to be stopped by the handcuffs on his wrists. The sound that escaped his mouth was a perfect mix of pain and pleasure, his chest rumbling with the sensation.
He felt like with just one touch, he would fall apart and come the hardest he’d ever come in his entire life, yet the touch didn’t come.
That was just the first thirty minutes. After seeing how much Swiss was enjoying the pain and how incredible it felt to torture his mate, Dewdrop had gone wild with the wax. He seemed to have an endless supply of candles to burn and well, fire ghoul magic to speed up the process and he worked on his craft diligently for the next hour and a half.
He managed to cover Swiss’s entire chest in wax, an obscene amount spilling from the sides as well. Some decorated his neck like a precious necklace, and even some on his legs, thighs mostly, driving Swiss even more insane at the lack of stimulation on his cock. So close yet so far. He even threatened to put some on his mouth if he didn’t stop begging, and actually put some on his forehead, mostly for shits and giggles.
He was most proud of the one where he spelled his name on his bicep.
At the end of the two hours, Swiss was beginning to get tired, legs hurting too much, arms strained and body unable to keep up with the heat and the cold changing so fast.
His cock had been rock hard and leaking cum since they started, begging for attention. The wax that was on his crotch was covered in precum. He had even stopped rocking his hips in the air, as that made things even more painful.
“Please,” he let out for the thousandth time that night. “Please, Dew.”
“Mhmmm? Please what toots?”
“Please let me cum.”
Dew stepped back to admire his art.
He loved the sight in front of him. The room was illuminated by the candles, Swiss in the middle of it. Back arched back as inhumanly as possible, a mess of colors on his chest and legs, but his favorite was the dripping cock in the middle, almost purple from the pain. The layers of wax on his chest were slowly starting to crack, every breath without touch agony for Swiss, causing him to inhale and exhale deeper, in hopes of salvation.
“Be careful what you wish for,” he grinned. This was his plan all along, the pièce de résistance, what he’d been dreaming of all this time, but he knew he had to take his time for it, get him ready and pliant. Desperate, begging.
He reached for the black candle, the one that was considerably bigger than the rest. A nice pool of melted wax was on the top, ready for his final attack.
With his right hand, he held the candle while he grabbed a small ice cube with his left and made his way to Swiss’s side, close to his cock.
Relief washed over Swiss’s face, finally about to reach his own climax, too gone to think straight he didn’t even see what Dew was holding in his hands. He just closed his eyes, and waited for a hand, if he was lucky a warm mouth on his cock, bringing him to his release.
With a swift motion, Dewdrop brought the candle to Swiss’s cock, close enough for him to feel the fire that was still burning. His eyes snapped open as he felt the fire almost touch his cock but before he could react to it, a pool of hot candle wax was pouring over his throbbing cock, coating it almost entirely.
He let out a scream loud enough to wake some people up in their bedrooms. Just as he thought the wax was too much, Dew placed the candle on the floor, the fire dead now, and grabbed Swiss’s cock with the hand that was still holding the ice cube in it and started jerking him as fast as he could.
The heat of the wax on his cock mixed with the ice cube in Dew’s hand drove Swiss insane, finally receiving the touch he desperately needed on his cock overclouded by the heat and the cold.
He let out a string of ah’s as Dew jerked him, the ice cube almost fully melted now and the wax dry, tugging his skin every time Dewdrop moved his hand. Swiss found one last strength in his body and rocked his hips against Dew’s hand, finally bringing himself to the edge and came as hard as he could, adding the final touches to the masterpiece Dew painted on his body.
Still shaking and whimpering, he groaned for the last time as Dew’s hand slowed down, not yet stopping, milking the last of his orgasm.
He let out a shaky breath as Dew removed his hand from his cock, placing his finger on Swiss’ chest, dragging a long nail across the wax that was now covered in an insane amount of cum.
“Thank you for your contribution, my love,” Dew said, admiring his art one last time.
