Let's spread some love 😘. What are some of your top five favourite cs fics?

Okay Anon, so I genuinely haven't been ignoring your question, and I truly do LOVE to sing the praises of our many, MANY talented CS and OuaT fic writers, but it is so hard to have an answer of only 5!!! I would honestly say it is pretty much impossible!!! (Krystal @kmomof4 did force me to give her a Top 5 list this summer, but I only did it because she insisted it was necessary ;p and I'm still not sure it would always be the same five, depending on mood and what I'm JONESING for - ha ha, that pun was unintentional! - at the moment!)

In all seriousness though, even at that, I had to make up multiple brackets, like "normal" people do for the NCAA Sweet 16, to try to narrow down my choices. For real! I had several different sheets just to try to narrow it down somewhat: One Shots, Two or Three Shots, Short MCs, Long (Epic) MCs, Enchanted Forest fics, Modern AU Fics, Missing Moment/Canon Compliant Fics, Canon Divergent Fics, Whump and Hurt Comfort fics, you get the idea....It went on and on!

Character Analysis: Sirica

Sirica.

 I've been thinking of this character like, a lot. Back then, during purgatory of reception week at formerly-known Fort Hood, I binged-watched KRBAY during my days slowly decaying in my barracks room going through the motions of being processed into my new unit. It was just comfort waves washing over me so a lot of details were mushy and I usually only watched it after I drank a lot. So I wasn't fully paying much attention to the episodes. 

Now, I have been rewatching it again to get some ideas (okay, mostly one episode) and this girl shows up for a sinful amount of short time in the entire series and she's the most interesting character ever?

I just realized something about episode 60. She has this really cool multi-weapon that isn't really made clear where she obtained it from but it does have the Holy Nightmare Logo on the handle. It seems like a high possibility that Holy Nightmare also manufactures weapons as well. 

Here's what I think and kind of connected these dots myself. I may not have been the only one to do it, but here's my humble take:

King Dedede is ordering his monster of the day. As he's talking about the "invader" CS speaks as if he knows of her. Immediately like "oh white alien girl?" there was some familiarity when talking about her. Also, I don't think it's a flimsy coincidence that CS sent the very monster that killed her mother. 

What am I getting at?

I think CS dude gave Sirica her weapon.

How would she have known that Meta Knight was on mission with her mother and the whole story of what went down? And not even really the whole story but somehow a painted version that Meta Knight left Garlude for dead? I think CS fed into it and I know that Kirby is target number one for elimination but the Star Warriors and Nightmare aren't exactly best friends. 

I fully believe it was in hopes that Sirica would take down Meta Knight AND Kirby but CS (who's canonically a dickhead) wanted to give Sirica a big hate boner for Meta Knight and then simply have Kirisakin just kill them all off. 

But I found it interesting that CS spoke of Sirica like he knew of her by extension through Garlude.

Also, Sirica sucks at aiming. Someone please give her aim bot. I'm not trying to paint her like some incompetent idiot, she's been around the block obviously, but I get the vibes she's still getting used to her weapon. I know it's a children's show and they can't exactly show characters getting riddled with holes but I like to think Sirica was only somewhat trained enough to use the weapon.

Like I couldn't totally see a young hot-blood, out for vengeance being easily manipulated and maybe CS guy casually training her. Like putting Sirica in some battle arena where she practiced against low-tier demon beasts. Honestly could totally see that. Then Sirica sent out on the hunt for Meta Knight after being spoon-fed some lies. 

Sirica knows how to use her weapon well enough to get what it needs to do and switch it to whatever she needs it to do but these are just some nuances I picked up on the English dub that I thought it'd be interesting if this were the case rather than "lol she must've stolen it". 

I may have glazed over some details, again I watched the English dub because I have to comb through YouTube and other sites to really find the episodes and the English dub is all I can really handle if I'm being honest. I could go into a little bit about how Meta Knight didn't immediately recognize Sirica either. Most likely because he never:

1. Has seen her grown up.

2. Never actually met her in the first place only heard of her through Garlude. 

I'm just saying Sirica had to remind him of her mother, and that can be chalked up to a lot of things because I'm sure Meta Knight has known a plethora of warriors in his time and has seen so many of them fucking die that eventually faces just start blurring together. 

Because life and precious time being against me, it has been a hot minute since I sat down and actually watched the anime. But I do casually still try to do so because now, as an adult, I can fully appreciate it more and even stem my own headcanons from it.

Genetics Basics

I hate myself.

Because I´m no genetics expert, just a writer with an obsession of learning new things and applying them to my favorite fandoms, please see @littlehungrywarriorcats Series on Cat Genetics for Writers and Artists for an in depth explanation. Just a few things are being said and then I´ll put the whole Tigerkin desaster under a cut so you don´t have to scroll forever.

Because I have limited knowledge of physical disabilities, I´ll be avoiding breeds/traits that are linked to genetic disabilities in cats. So no manx, no folded ears and so on. The only disability I can´t avoid is deafness in White Dominant cats with blue eyes, because saying that all of the white cats are either albino or dodged the bullet feels ignorant. There will be ONE cat who gets to be white, blue eyed and hearing in this entire story, and it´s Cloudtail. Luck of the draw, buddy.

I will rant about shit that makes no sense, like where the hell did golden tabby Mothwing come from.

I´m working from the most iconic canon designs backwards, as well as designs I´ve already comitted to. So when Tigerclaw is a black classic tabby and Mist is a silver mackerel tabby, then one of their parents gets hit with the Inhibitor gene and we´ll either have smoke Pinestar or silver tabby Leopardfoot.

Here´s a list of the genes I´m working with, and I´m using the word genes because writing allele all the time breaks my dyslexic brain.

Base Colors: B - black b - Chocolate bl - Cinnamon

Ginger: O - Ginger o - no Ginger

Dilute: D - no dilution d - dilution

Tabby: A - Agouti a - non Agouti (no tabby, no matter the modifiers) Mc - Mackerel mc - Classic Ta - Ticked ta - not ticked (Ta overwrites anything on Mc, so no matter what, if a cat has one Ta it´s ticked, and if it´s Ta/ta it´s ticked but with leftover stripes on the face, the legs and the tail. No matter what, if a cat is a/a it´s a solid.)

Inhibitor: I - Inhibitor, making a "silver" or a "smoke" i - no Inhibitor (If a tabby is I/i, the silver can look "tarnished")

Widebanding: Wd - Widebanding, "golden tabby" wd - no widebanding (This is not entirely accurate, but simplified for fictional purposes. Also, I´ll keep inhibitor and widebanding from interacting on the same cat.)

Extension: E - normal cat e - amber (There´s two more Extension phenotypes but I´m only using amber so they´re not in here.)

Albino: C - full color cats c - complete albino (white + blue eyes, NOT DEAF) cs - siamese (The PATTERN, not the BREED)

Fur lengh: L - shorthair l - longhair

White Spotting + Wide dominant Wd - White dominant (This is the "white + blue eyes = deaf" gene) S - white spotting w - no white spotting (w/w is no white on the cat, S/w is a little white up to tuxedo, and S/S is a lot of white)

Hi CS! I am getting started with Eldritcher's asioaf fics. I have read the Caraxes fic. Oh god... it moved me to tears.

I am ready to put myself through more but the other fics have Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings. Do they have any noncon/MCD? Sorry to bother you and thanks in advance!

Yay! Soon the vine to elm is a stunning fic. The depth and the emotional intimacy is insane. Traumatized dragon should be a tough sell but it feels like an extension of canon.

The other fics don't have noncon/MCD. Maybe some dubcon vibes in the fics. Some of the descriptions around body image issues feel graphic/heavy but IMO that's just because of the starkness of the writing style. But if that's a trigger for you definitely keep it in mind. Nothing really graphic honestly. Canon deaths are offscreen/offpage.

Also lots of spoilers for the later events based on the books if you are following show canon.

btw, if you come across other good fics in this fandom lmk! I want to make a rec list at some point but not really vibing with the Reylo style vibes going on. <3

Classic Sabacc #1 - Card Deck

Design Notes:

This visualization of Classic Sabacc combines the card design from the Anaheim Celebration (2015) Sabacc deck with the distinctive card shape invented for Corellian Spike in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2015).

The card designs are current canon due to the deck's appearance in the Rebels TV series. Of course, if you want to be pendantic, only the cards that specifically appeared on screen are canon.

The metallic card back alludes to the use of 'card chips'—essentially, holographic playing cards—in Lester Neil Smith's Lando novels.

Many people refer to this version of Sabacc as 'Traditional'. I prefer the word 'Classic' as it's less unwieldly, as well as maintaining a pleasing aesthetic continuity between all the main versions of sabacc; they all abbreviate to 'CS' - Centran Sabacc, Classic Sabacc, Corellian Spike and Coruscant Shift.

The use of 'Aspect' to replace 'Arcana' in Sabacc terminology is my own coinage. As will be discussed more extensively later in the series, it refers to the Minor and Major 'Aspects' of the Force symbolised by the cards in the deck. It replaces the Latin word 'Arcana' (meaning Secrets or Mysteries) used for the Tarot.

Here, have some post-canon domestic CS while I try to remember how to write. Rated T for swearing and implied sexytimes. ~1200 words

“Ouch! Dammit! Shit!”

Emma rinsed the blood off her hand and glared at the shattered remains of Killian’s favorite coffee mug, knowing full well she only had about 5 seconds before-

“Are you alright, love?” Killian bustled into the kitchen, blue eyes wide with worry. For a fearsome pirate captain, he could sure be a fussy mother hen sometimes.

Emma sighed. “Yes, I’m fine. But I think your ‘Captain Studmuffin’ mug is a goner.” Slippery little fucker had slid right out of her soapy hands and without thinking, she’d reached for it and stabbed the hell out of her finger.

“Emma, you’re bleeding.”

“It’s fine.”

“Let me see.”

“It’s just a little cut. It’ll stop in a sec.”

“Swan.”

“Hook.”

Emma crossed her arms, holding her wounded finger up a bit so it wouldn’t touch the sleeve of her sweater, and studied her husband. These days it was usually ‘Emma’ and ‘Killian’. ‘Hook’ and ‘Swan’ only came out during the two F’s: fighting and foreplay. She hadn’t decided which F this was yet.

Killian cocked an eyebrow, leaning closer into her space and she was getting an inkling now. Yep, that feeling below her belt was definitely an inkling.

He smiled that smile that made the corners of his eyes crinkle and gently took her injured hand. His thumb caressed the lifeline on her palm.

“I feel we’re treading in familiar territory, love.”

“Mmhm,” Emma answered grinning despite herself. “And you’re just as stubborn as ever, but this time you don’t have a giant as an excuse to play doctor with me.”

Killian kissed the tip of her finger, which had, in fact, stopped bleeding by now, and released her hand. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in tight. His stubble tickled her cheek as he murmured in her ear, “Aye, but I’ve still got that scarf upstairs in the bureau drawer. Perhaps we can find some other use for it?”

Emma responded with a low, throaty laugh and pushed away from him. “Make sure the deadbolt is locked and meet me upstairs, Captain.”

Killian grinned knowingly and made to secure the front door. She only called him ‘Captain’ for the third F - their very favorite F of all.

The next morning, Killian came downstairs to find his coffee and newspaper waiting for him on the kitchen table. The scene was familiar enough, but the blue ceramic vessel holding his morning dose of caffeine was clearly new. Emblazoned on the mug was a little pale blue anchor and white letters proclaiming: “I have the vocabulary of a well educated sailor.”

Killian smiled to himself at Emma’s thoughtfulness. He knew she had always enjoyed his way with words, but it surprised him that she had managed to find a gift so specifically suited to him. He was, in fact, a well educated sailor after all, both from his time in the Royal Navy and his years of personal study thereafter. He planned to thank her very thoroughly whenever she returned home from her early shift at the station.

He settled into his morning routine, taking the occasional sip from his new mug between filling in the answers to the daily crossword. He found himself stuck on 12 down when he heard keys jangling at the back door. Killian looked up as his step-son strode into the kitchen, backpack slung over one shoulder.

“Henry, m’lad! Everything alright? We weren’t expecting you back until after school.”

“I’m good, I just left a book upstairs that I need for class today.”

“Ah, I see. Can you spare a moment? You’re just the man I need for this accursed puzzle.”

Henry raised an eyebrow. “Another pop culture reference in the crossword?” Killian nodded and Henry sat down across from him, placing his backpack in another empty chair. “Let’s hear it.”

“Four letters. ‘Professor Henry Walton Jones, as called by his friends’.”

“It’s ‘Indy’. I-N-D-Y,” Henry answered. “As in Indiana Jones? Yeah, we’re definitely watching Raiders of the Lost Ark on our next movie night.”

Killian penciled in the letters as Henry had spelled them. “Perfect! These bloody modern references catch me every time. Thank you, lad. I like to think I otherwise have a rather impressive command of the English language.”

Henry laughed. “Yeah, we could probably call you Professor Jones.”

“Too right.” Killian took a sip of his coffee, making sure the print on the side of the cup faced Henry. “Your mother seems to be enamored of my vocabulary.”

Henry squinted at the writing. “Wait, mom gave you that? That’s a little ironic coming from her.”

“How do you mean?”

Henry stood, a wry smile tilting his lips. “Well, if anyone in this house swears like a sailor, it’s mom.”

Killian scowls, completely taken aback. “Swears like a-”

“Anyway, I better grab my book before I miss the bus.” Henry snatched up his book bag and headed toward the stairs before Killian could finish his thought.

He was still stewing a couple minutes later when he heard a muffled “See you guys tonight!” followed by an unceremonious slam of the door.

‘Swear like a sailor’, eh? In his day, the Royal Navy highly disapproved of swearing. Terrible form for a man in uniform. Pirates were a different matter, he supposed, but even as the dreaded Captain Hook he only ever uttered the occasional ‘damn’ or ‘bloody.’ Foul language had never been his vice of choice.

So, this must be a modern expression lost on him. Usually, he knew when Emma was quoting something - as much as he knew she loved that he didn’t know what it was - but this? This felt more like an opening salvo. Shots fired across his bow. Far be it from him to ignore a challenge from his Swan.

When Emma came back to her office after a quick trip to the ladies’ room, she hadn’t expected to find her pirate sitting on her desk. Manspreading should be annoying, not attractive, but dammit if he didn’t look tempting perched up there wearing that stupid smirk that still did things to her even after a year of marriage.

She bit her lower lip to stifle a smile and moved to stand between his thighs, fully planning to kiss the smirk off his face. Before she reached him, however, he hopped down and held out his left arm, a small gift bag dangling from his hook.

Emma tentatively accepted the bag. “What’s this?”

“Can’t a man give his wife a present for no reason at all?”

“He can…” Emma narrowed her eyes. Yes, Killian was prone to spontaneous romantic gestures, but he was giving off a weird vibe here. No, not weird exactly. What’s the word?

“Don’t open it until I leave, darling, but I saw this in an after-Christmas sale and it struck me as the perfect thank you to you for the lovely mug you gave me yesterday morning.” He leaned in and gave her a quick-and-dirty kiss that left her toes tingling, then slipped past her out of her office.

“See you at home, love,” he called back over his shoulder.

Frisky, Emma decided. The word she was looking for was frisky.

Emma rushed to her desk chair and sat down to open her present. Inside the bag she found a white porcelain coffee mug emblazoned with a smiling gingerbread man holding a candy cane. Well that explained the ‘after-Christmas’ part, but-

“Sonnuvabitch.” Emma grinned, shaking her head slightly. Just above the gingerbread man’s shoulder in cheerful red and green letters were the words “Bite Me!”

“Oh, Captain,” she thought aloud, “just wait ‘til I get home.”

What kinda accents do the realms have? You can say in comparison to real one or just describe, it works either way

Butterfly canon is built on the assumption that there is some sort of universe wide spell easing communication. Another winxer coined the term Universal Translation Spell which I also like to use with my own imposed limitations.

The butterfly UTS is meant to enable communication and works best on spoken language. It gives the listener the ability to understand what is being said to them regardless of what language the words have been said in. The listener will still hear the foreign language, but receive an instant seamless translation in their brain as if they were able to speak the language in question. Over time people learn to tune out the words they hear as it can be headache inducing after prolonged exposure.

What the UTS doesn’t enable is the acquisition of the ability to process written language. People won’t be able to write in any language unless they do study it. Reading ability is also limited: people are only able to understand texts if they have an idea what it says. Once a translation is given, they will be able to parse the text better and are able to build “vocabulary” and understanding in a language using the UTS. This is ofc still not equal to having learned a language, because the UTS slides over cultural references, or linguistically important structures and just delivers an unembellished basic translation. To be able to express oneself in a nuanced way, one still has to study languages.

So there is no “common language” everyone learns to speak. If people choose to learn a foreign language, they do it for practical reasons like communicating with frequent foreign language speaking partners or because their native language is a dialect and they need to know the official language of their realm for legal applications. Alfea mandates all students study Magics Standard, to help students integrate and learn about the local culture. Knowing Magics Standard also enables them to use Alfea’s and Magics City’s extensive library without having to rely on audio recorded material only.

Given this, I can describe the phoneme case of each of the girls’ native languages, which would influence their accent in any language they chose to learn.

Stella:

Native language: Solkaros

Sounds: Solkaros has only 4 vowels, which only exist in a few combinations; consonants are either very hard or are complex sounds like tl, hu(wa) and ng; Solkaros combines flection/conjugation with nouns and verbs and the word length is long (old Solarian doesn’t); words have no innate inflection and are spoken flat/with equal weight on each syllable

Writing system: letter by letter

Speaks: Old/Ceremonial Solarian, Magics Common, very little Esperanto

Resulting accents: Stella tends to overpronounce or catch on consonants like t, ch and pronounces her dʒ-s like a hard g instead

Musa:

Native language: Gou dialect Melodean

Sounds: Melodean is an inflection heavy language, in which intonation of words matters and is used to differentiate meaning; Melodean has over 18 distinct vowel sounds, Gou uses about 15 of them and sounds a little flatter in comparison; consonants are almost completely unvoiced ones (f, r/l, n, t, ch, q) and lack voiced ones like (z, g); word length is very short

Writing system: pictogram based

Speaks: Simplified Melodean (official language) Magics Common

Resulting accents: Musa sounds very soft and has trouble with harsh ch, or rolled r sounds, she sometimes runs out of breath on longer words (6+ syllables)

Flora:

Native language: Bisayang 

Sounds: Bisayang is heavy on consonant grouping, using a lot of combinations as it has a low total sound repertoire of 20 distinct letters/sounds; if doesn’t use f, voiced h sounds, but has three different n/ng/nmg sounds; word length is variable with shorter verbs spoken upfront and long noun constructs

Writing system: syllabic

Speaks: Tulang Linpi (official language), Magics Common

Resulting accent: Flora sounds nasal in her n, m, b and g sounds and tends to replace consonants she doesn’t really know with familiar ones before getting confident (eg f->p, cs/tsh -> sh)

Tecna:

Native language: Jordan

Sounds: Very heavy on r and hard ch sounds; has a characteristic inflection where the last vowel of nouns is stressed creating a lilting speech; 

Writing system: combination of syllabic with pictograms

Speaks: Trible (language of Tribilisi), Magics Common, very little Esperanto

Resulting accent: Tecna unconsciously recreates the Jordan lilt in their speech, pronounces g, ch and tsh sounds hard and rolls their r, strangely no trouble with ny/ty sounds

Bloom:

Native language: Esperanto (south)

Sounds: t, k, soft ch, dʒ , and sh consonants are very common, has a rolled r; uses 7 vowel sounds, e the most frequent of them; south dialect is heavy on inflection and stresses s and sh sounds longer, making syllables follow a fast-long-fast rhythm when speaking; south dialect adds vowels to the ends of words and doesn’t leave final consonants unsounded

Writing: letter by letter

Speaks: Frederican, Magics Standard, Dominian, 

Resulting accent: Bloom speaks often with Esperanto rhythm and unintentionally stresses consonants at the end of words, has trouble with y/ly/ty sounds

Layla:

Native language: A’gu

Sounds: uses mostly sounded consonants like m, ʒ, g; y, f and r are also frequently used; very soft sound relying on swallowed consonant sounds and heavy complex vowels; oi, uo and a are frequent sounds; words are frequently equal in length so words of importnace are stressed; mostly spoken with a wide, slightly open mouth

Speaks: Igbou, Magics Standard, Pachit (Nabu’s language)

Resulting accent: Pronounces her a’s and e’s flat and doesn’t open her mouth too much for very clear sounds, makes every sound a complex sound through that

Roxy:

Native language: Esperanto (blend of west and south)

Sounds: Same as with Bloom; the west dialect doesn’t stress final consonants and has a different rhythm: most words are stressed on the first syllable; Stronger w, and harder ch sounds

Speaks: Frederican, very little Magics Standard

Resulting accent: Has no trouble with throathy ch sounds, but lisped s, and ly/ty sounds are difficult, front-heavy intonation on words

Daphne:

Native language: Dominian 

Sounds: Bright and open mouthed vowel sounds, 9 distinct ones spoken in isolation, complex consonants like ar, ny, ty (rare), gn; final syllables are often swallowed; inflection is not word specific, but changes within a sentence going from high tone sections to low tone sections marking different sentence components

Writing: letter by letter with few exceptions in “cursive”

Speaks: Old Dominian Runespeak, Magics Standard, Simplified Melodean

Resulting accent: Has trouble with complex vowel sounds and usually speaks with either or sound, speaks longer sections with on breath than strictly necessary in Melodean

CS Genre: AU (actors who “hate” each other)

“You really should check out this script, mate,” Robin said, “it’s bloody perfect for you.”

Killian took a swig of his rum, grinning to himself. “Let me guess…it’s a Regina Mills production?”

Robin grinned back, taking a healthy swig of his beer before continuing. “It may be my fiancée’s current project but that makes it no less perfect for you.  I know you don’t have any pressing projects at the moment.  What would it hurt to just check it out?”

“Alright, I’ll bite,” Killian said, “what exactly is so perfect about this particular script?”

“It’s got action, adventure, a bit of whimsy, and romance,” Robin answered. “You’d be taking the role of Captain Hook.”

“A villain?”

“Well, perhaps more of a reformed scoundrel,” Robin allowed. “He is the male romantic lead, after all.”

Killian was silent for several moments, warring with himself. The sounds of the bar, The Rabbit Hole, washed over him.  Finally, he reached up, scratched at the spot behind his ear and spoke again, refusing to look at his mate.

“You know full well I haven’t taken an action role since…it happened,” he said, taking a fortifying swig of rum. He held up his slightly-atrophied left hand and stared at it in derision.  “Not much place in action movies for a bloke who only has one working hand.”

Robin clapped him on the shoulder. “We’ve been over this.  You could act circles around half the leading men in Hollywood right now even with their two hands.”

“I’m not so sure of that,” Killian said under his breath.

He flexed his left hand, the motion weak and taking painfully long, and his mind went back to the accident. The moment his life changed forever.  Not only had he lost his love, his Milah in that automobile crash, but his hand had been crushed.  After extensive surgeries, the doctors had managed to save the hand (it had been touch and go for a while, the doctors all preparing him for the possibility that amputation may be necessary), but they told him he’d never get more than minimal functionality from it again.

“Well I am,” Robin said bracingly.  “And besides.  Your disability will be no factor in anything that’s required of in this particular film.  If you’ll recall, Captain Hook came by the name after a crocodile ate his left hand.”

Well, that did provide some interesting possibilities. He couldn’t deny he missed starring in action-heavy roles.  They had been his staple before the accident.  He’d made quite a name for himself.  Since it had happened…well, he’d spent most of his acting time playing the protagonist in rom-coms.  He’d been blessed with good looks, and he’d acquired more than his fair share of female fans thanks to those roles, but he hungered for another role of real substance.

“Very well,” Killian said, pushing aside his tumbler of rum and preparing to settle his tab, “I’ll give it a read.”

Read it he had, and he’d promptly fallen in love. This was the role of a lifetime.  Quite a fresh and imaginative take on the tale of Peter Pan, with Hook the romantic hero and Pan the bloody demon.  It hit everything that made a story great—action, adventure, romance, witty dialogue, and the happiest of happy ending (particularly for Captain Hook and the protagonist Anna Swan).

Robin was right; this was a role he simply couldn’t turn down. Truth be told, it was as though the part had been written for him.  He saw himself in the resilient fighter Captain Hook was, the melancholy hero who had endured far too much loss in his life.

The theme of a rather lonely little boy reconnecting with his birth mother likewise touched something deep inside. There was something healing in reading about that little boy’s healing—and the way he healed his mother—that soothed (at least in part) the wound Killian carried from his own father’s abandonment so many years ago.  True, Anna Swan had given up her infant to give him his best chance while his father had abandoned him and Liam out of nothing but sheer selfishness, but an orphan’s an orphan.

The very next morning, he’d called Regina Mills directly (there were certainly perks to being best mates with the fiancé of one of Hollywood’s biggest directors) and expressed interest in the role. She’d immediately called him in for an audition—a process she’d assured him was nothing but a formality.  Killian had made quite a name for himself over the years, and Regina had assured him the part was his for the taking.

And so it was that two weeks later he found himself striding into the studio for a chemistry test with the female lead, Emma Swan.

He knew very little about his on-screen love interest. He’d caught a few episodes of her television show, but a man can’t very well get a read on a person based solely on her performance as an actress.  He could tell that she was bloody gorgeous and had more than her share of talent, but as to the rest?  Who was to know?

He fervently hoped they hit it off. As the two of them were scene partners in nearly every scene they were involved with, they would be spending long, grueling hours together over the next few months.  Far better to spend that time with someone he genuinely liked than someone who got on his last nerve.

His agent, who insisted he call her Tinker Bell for some unaccountable reason, had playfully suggested maybe the two of them would not only get along, but get along.  She’d nudged him, winking playfully, asking if he knew what she meant.

Aye, he knew exactly what she meant, but it wasn’t going to happen. No matter what this Emma Swan may be like, his heart had been broken so definitively it would never be mended again.  For the first few years after Milah’s death, he’d buried the pain in rum and passionate nights with as many anonymous women as he could find.

But eventually he realized how utterly empty his life had become. He’d loved Milah with a burning passion, and their life had been good.  Losing himself in meaningless encounters with women did nothing to mask the pain, only made him realize how pointless his life had become.  Truth be told, he was no longer interested in meaningless sex.  If anything, he wished for a real, true, meaningful relationship.

But that ship had sailed when his love had died. No use wishing for something he would never again allow to be his.

The studio door opened, cutting short Killian’s melancholy musings, and then she walked through, and every thought in his head suddenly fled.  He knew Emma Swan was beautiful; he’d seen that clear enough when he’d viewed her TV show, but nothing could have prepared him for the punch to the gut seeing her live and in person gave him.

She wore her long, luscious blonde hair in an artfully messy ponytail high on hear head. Her green eyes sparkled.  And there was just a certain, indefinable something about being in the same room with her that made him tingle with awareness.

Love at first sight, Tink would have supplied in a sing-song voice.  He definitively shoved that thought aside.  Where he and Emma Swan were concerned, the only “falling in love” that would happen would be of the on-screen kind.

He took a deep breath and let it out, trying desperately to get ahold of himself. He was going to keep this professional if it killed him.  When he finally felt like he could talk to the goddess without making an utter fool of himself, he walked over to her, keeping his expression pleasantly friendly.

“Hello love; my name’s Killian Jones.”

He offered his hand, and she looked at him suspiciously for a moment before taking it and shaking it tentatively. “I’m Emma Swan.”

He smiled at her like an idiot. This whole “remaining professional” business was going to be a fair bit more difficult than he’d expected.

Emma glanced away, desperately needing to put some distance between them. A woman could drown in those blue eyes of his.

No wonder he’s had nearly every woman in a 100-mile vicinity falling all over themselves over him, she thought to herself.  And that was enough to bring back reality.  She wasn’t, absolutely wasn’t going to be just another conquest.

So, she straightened, and looked down at the script again while they waited for the casting director (a rather bad-tempered man named Leroy) to signal that they were ready for the chemistry test.

She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the scene Leroy had pulled out for them to read. She’d been afraid he’d pick the scene—the big, passionate kiss that changed everything for both Emma and Hook (although it took Emma a considerably longer time than Hook to admit it).  Stage kiss or not, no way was she ready to lock lips with Killian Jones.  She was going to have to psych herself up for that.

Luckily, that wasn’t the scene picked, but one a couple of acts later. This one was all dialogue.  Romantic and emotional dialogue, yes, but strictly dialogue none the less.  Not even a stray brush of hands in the script for this one.

She’d be fine; just fine.

“Alright, let’s get this show on the road,” Leroy said from his seat just beyond the stage. “Haven’t had breakfast yet, and if Granny’s runs out of bacon before I get there, there’s gonna be hell to pay.”

“I’m quaking in my boots,” Killian said under his breath, only loud enough for Emma to hear.

She smiled in spite of herself. “You should be,” she whispered back.  “He looks like he means business.”

“Hey, break it up!” Leroy growled. “Save the flirting for the stage!”

Emma felt her face flame. Leroy thought she was flirting with Killian?  Ugh!  Making this film was going to be the longest couple of months of her life.

“Right,” Leroy said again with a nod. “So in case you’re not that familiar with the context yet, your scene comes a couple hours after the Echo Caves confession.  Hook and Baelfire are both sniffing after Anna and she just wants to get to Henry.  Bae just took the cutlass and went off looking for Dark Hollow.  And that’s where you two love birds pick it up.”

Emma closed her eyes, pictured the scene to come, imagined the emotions running through Anna at the moment—fear for her son’s safety, a strange mixture of relief and panic at Bae’s return, desire—and maybe the starting of something more—for Hook. She still felt a bit overwhelmed about how much her life had changed over the past few months.

So, sky-high walls. She could do sky-high walls.

Emma opened her eyes and became Anna.

Anna shot Hook a suspicious look, putting her hand out to stop him from stepping past her and following Bae.

“What was that about.”

Hook looked aside, clearly uncomfortable. “I assumed he’d heard my secret.  I also assumed you’d told him of our shared moment.”

Of course he’d go there, Anna thought to herself.  She rolled her eyes.  “Why would you assume that?”

He stepped forward, his deep, deep blue eyes boring into hers and not giving up. Emma felt her heart pound at his nearness.  “Because I was hoping it meant something.”

Anna wasn’t going there. She wasn’t going anywhere near there.  Best to change the subject.  “What meant something was that you told us that Bae was still alive.  Thank you.  I realize you could have kept Pan’s information to yourself.”

“Why would I have done that?” He sounded as though he genuinely didn’t know the answer.

She shrugged. “I don’t know.  Maybe Pan offered you a deal.  Why else would he tell you?”

“It was a test,” Hook said, his voice softening—even as it shone with sincerity. “He wanted to see if I’d leave an old friend to die, even if the old friend happens to be vying for the same woman I am.”

“And you chose your friend?” Emma let a hint of breathlessness enter her voice.

“Does that surprise you?”

Uh, yeah, it did. “You are a pirate.”

“Yeah, that I am.” Killian looked down, and Emma’s heart twisted at the hint of self-deprecation she saw in the gesture. This guy really was good.

And then he turned on the intensity, and Emma found it difficult to think at all. “But I also believe in good form.  So when I win you heart, Anna, and I will win it, it will not be because of any trickery; it will be because you want me.”

He stepped even closer; so close that she could feel his breath against her face. His eyes held hers, shining with sincerity.  She felt like a moth in the presence of the flame.  She wanted nothing more than to sway into him.

Well why not? Anna’s supposed to be falling in love, isn’t she?

She let her face show how much ‘Hook’s’ words affected her. She saw his eyes darken in response, and it took way, way more effort than it should to pull back and let Anna try to put some emotional distance between them once again.

“This is not a contest, Hook.”

He gave her no quarter, no lessening of his particular earnestness. “Isn’t it?  You’re going to have to choose, Anna; you realize that, don’t you, because neither one of us is going to give up.”

That was way, way too much for her. “The only thing I have to choose is the best way to get my son back.”

He smiled proudly. “And you will.”

Emma knew enough about Anna to know she was not used to anyone putting her first; she wasn’t used to anyone having faith in her.  She let a touch of wonder enter her voice.  “You think so?”

“I’ve yet to see you fail,” he let his smile turn playful, flirtatious. “And when you do succeed, well, that’s when the fun begins.”

For several moments after the scene wrapped up, Emma and Killian continued staring at each other. That was…that was…intense.

She didn’t realize she was effectively staring longingly into Killian Jones’ eyes until Leroy chuckled. “Oh yeah.  I don’t think chemistry is going to be any problem between the two of you.”

Emma blinked, and then felt the heat creep up into her cheeks. How was she ever going to survive making this damn movie?

She did what she did best. She stormed away.

“Yeah, well,” she said over her shoulder as she walked away, “what can I say? We’re really, really good actors.”

And she told herself it was the truth. She’d just managed to really get into character; that was all that had happened out there on that stage.  It was Anna’s emotions she was feeling, not her own.  Not anywhere close to her own.

Notes:

--Yay! No more hiatus!  I can’t wait for 5x13 this weekend.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Emma and Killian will actually be reunited by the end!

--Mostly from Killian’s perspective here. He obviously doesn’t have as much against Emma personally as she has against him, but he was burned by the pain of what happened with Milah, so a relationship is the farthest thing from what he plans.  We’ll see how long those plans last, lol.

--I chose the scene from Dark Hollow because I think it’s really incredibly romantic—and it really makes Emma and Killian’s chemistry shine. Obviously the dialogue from that part is not mine.

--Up next: They start rehearsals and filming.   Sparks fly—but will either of these wounded, stubborn people let themselves acknowledge them—let alone act on them?

Hi there!! I saw that you have a Master's in children's literature, and I've seen a lot of stuff saying that Mr. Tokien was racist. I was wondering if you could clarify that? Reading the books, I saw not much that might bring light on that topic. If you're not comfortable answering this, please ignore it, sorry for taking up your time!!

Hi! I do, and I’m happy to talk a bit about this, with the caveat that I am not a Tolkienist - I studied him a little, mostly in his relationship to CS Lewis, and while I find him pretty insufferable and his writing absurdly anglocentric (which is, of course, the point) off the top of my head I couldn’t think of anything specific, incidentwise, that would suggest that he was racist like, say, we are comfortable saying that Rowling was transphobic. 

That said: dude isn’t in the clear, either.

So what immediately comes to mind is that Tolkien was anglocentric to an extreme. By this I mean that this was chronicled pretty well - he was famously cranky that Oxford students no longer were required to learn old English, and there’s a story - I’m pretty sure Pullman told it - about how sitting next to Tolkien at dinner meant he might ask you if you could read old English, and if you couldn’t, he would just turn to speak to the other student. So at the very least, he didn’t care much about the world outside of an anglocentric viewpoint.

This comes out in the text. It’s not comfortable: the heroes are middle aged white dudes (English), the “angels” (elves) are obscenely beautiful white Scandinavians, the villains are made monstrous and dark and covered in mud, the problematic rich miners with big noses are Jews (dwarves). And everyone is unapologetically light skinned, or white.

So here’s the issue. People will defend him, saying that Tolkien was writing an anglo myth for English people, based on Scandinavian folklore and sagas. The problem with that is that England hasn’t, arguable, ever been “white people only”, no matter what the English may believe, and he wasn’t writing this in 1700. He was writing this in 1950. This is a story about a place (Middle Earth) for a place (England) in hopes of being the new myth of that place (still England) where he conveniently neglects to talk about brown, black, or non-white people, except for those dwarves, who are still, ostensibly othered (Jewish). There were a lot of brown people in the UK while he was writing it. This wasn’t a man who had never met a black person because they simply didn’t exist. He just didn’t fit them into his fantasy of what Middle Earth was, and that’s the thing.

So.

Is Tolkien racist?

Sure.

Is he anti-semitic?

Sure.

By the values he grew up with, he probably would have been considered progressive. He definitely hated the war, he hated the treatment of Jews. But he himself admitted that what he kind of hated most was that the Nazis upheld the Scandinavians as pure Europe because he, too, felt that way - he expressed this in a letter in 1941, when talking about the romanticism that the Nazis expressed about northern Europeans.

The question though probably shouldn’t be “is this author racist”, since 99% of the time, by the morals and standards of today, almost every author is. But instead, ask: how do we dismantle and deconstruct that racism in modern fantasy, for adults and for children? How do we design critical curriculums that examine this racism and don’t apologize or defend it just because it was written by someone whose work we like otherwise, or who contributed extensively to the canon? We all know that Lovecraft was vile, but he essentially codified horror tropes as we know them now. We talk less about Tolkien because his racism isn’t as obvious, and people are much more willing to defend him. 

Anyway if it’s not clear I’m happy to talk about this. If you want my sources for this hastily put together answer, there are a few papers that examine Tolkiens relationship with the Ring cycle and his relationship with the Dwarves=Jews thing I bring up, where race is a lot more tied up. They tend to be behind paywalls, but you might have some luck if you find the author and ask for a copy. They’re all relatively recent.

So... I want to make fanfics and fanart easier to find/browse on my blog.

True, I have an extensive list of whump tags for people to peruse, where they can see all the canon and fandom works that hit on specific whump tropes, injuries, scenarios, bondage implements, etc.

But I feel like that’s not enough when it comes to sorting fanfics, where people might want to have tags for specific fanfic-related tropes, ships and scenarios. For example, my “Captain Swan” tag is so full of canon gifs and discussion, I could definitely use a “CS Fanfic” tag to bring people directly to the fanfiction of those two. That’s a no-brainer.

But I wanna know what else you guys, my friends and followers, might like to see implemented into my tag system to make finding whumpy fanfics on my blog easier for you. Besides some ship-related fanfic-specific tags, what else might you like to see me tag fics with for your browsing convenience? I can’t promise I’ll implement ALL of them, but I’ll certainly try for as many as I can :)

Also, do you guys like my Fanfic Recs format? I feel like it’s sufficient, and I’d like to add more of them - most notably, for all the MC fics I’ve reblogged but never formally recced. Before I embark on that kind of process, it would be good to know if there’s anything about the overall structure of my recs that you guys would like to see changed!

Here’s to hoping I can actually wrangle some fanworks as well as I’ve wrangled all the whump I’ve got on here!

General Ka chat continued - @pumpkinfishes I’m starting us a new post because the last one was getting unwieldy 😂

I love the idea that they were pushed off the coast by the Imperial family! That really adds flavor to the tension between the two societies. Do you have any more to that pet theory? Because if you do, I’d love to hear it!

A little more! Both societies show strong individual cultures, so a conflict could have been brewing under the surface for ages and we don’t necessarily have to have the reason spelled out for us in order to enjoy the show. One detail stood out to me though that made me think about it more closely:

We know the mountain (or at least the part they live in) is far from the coast. The twin sister leaves by ship from her own city’s harbor, gets lost in a storm, is taken in by a whole other mountain society, flies off over the forest, and only after traipsing around there for a while does she end up in the den. That’s quite a ways away from where she started. So why is one of the most prominent members of the den tattooed with waves?

Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Counselor was trying to use the ore to establish (or reestablish) a closer connection with the Imperialists? Maybe a trade agreement? One that would give his people reason to move back out of the shadows into which they’ve been pushed by the same society that rejects them? And if the Imperialists weren’t amenable, wouldn’t it be a good opportunity to say “fuck it, we’ll attack you instead”? Wouldn’t it be great if his entire objective was mapped out on the skin of his legacy, his only son? 

So yes, the entire crux of this theory hinges on the Counselor’s Son’s nipples. Not afraid to admit it.

Regretting being there? Regretting the attack? That gives him a whole ‘nother level of complexity and I need to know more.

To me it read as regretting having to attack, yes. The ore, its uses, and its means of production are very much the Counselor’s Son’s project, probably one he had to work really hard to sell to his hyper-traditional father. If the Imperialists were into it, he’d get a lot of credit for developing it. Instead, they rejected it and by extension him. From where he’s standing, maybe no one had to die over this. Maybe if they’d just understood his genius, they wouldn’t have to resort to the messier option. 

You know who else dies when the CS gets rejected? The Chief Archer. Hm.

I go into some more depth about the CS’s perceived link between rejection and death here. I should make an actual “let’s unpack” post for it one of these days because I have a ridiculous amount to say.

A thing I hadn’t previously considered is that if the women in their ranks have a little bit of hair left on the sides, would that make them higher rank than the men, if only slightly? I’ll take it.

The den is a sexism-free zone, it’s CANON. 

a lack of reaction and an early exit during a pivotal moment? Sounds like he couldn’t bear to watch, to me. Sounds like he tried to keep it tough, felt himself losing resolve when he saw Diana, knowing what was going to happen, and bounced before he lost form.

Don’t do this to me, my heart cannot take it. 

I would love to hear about the CAD in the battle scene, omgosh.

I have very few thoughts on this except that I want it desperately and think she deserves her moment in the spotlight! Like is Cirque really trying to tell me that the ONLY daughter of a freaking war chief doesn’t know how to hold her own in battle? No way. This bitch is a dagger dipped in honey, and maybe she doesn’t relish fighting, but that doesn’t mean she can’t do it. Her wannabe-bf knocks a guy off a cliff because he sucks at playing the flute and she all she does is look over the edge like “oh dear that’s a shame.” She’s nonviolent but she’s not weak.

Imagine her internal conflict if she were involved in the battle. Her father’s dead, her entire home has turned against her, but surely someone as sweet as her isn’t ready to give up on them all so soon. To them they’re preserving their culture, but to her they’ve warped and twisted it. She’d fight on behalf of restoring it, even if it looks like she has to take the side of the Imperialists to do so.

I want to take a moment and reflect what this magical show, Once Upon a Time has brought to my life.

I want to take a moment and reflect what this magical show, Once Upon a Time has brought to my life.  I’ve done this fangirl thing for twenty-years now, been involved in Star Wars, Buffy, Farscape, Heroes but there’s something really special about Once Upon a Time. At its core, it’s a show about hope. That is what has always been special about it, but I think, also the way it’s brought fans together.  

This show brings people together; not only that, it literally gives fans hope that things will get better.  That hope started with Emma Swan.

Jennifer Morrison is and always will be, Emma Swan.  I seriously cannot picture anyone else in that role.  Lana Parrilla is the Evil Queen Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming and he married Snow White, on-screen and off-screen.

What makes Emma so special as a character is that she is an original creation and an extension of the Snow White and Prince Charming story.  We all know these classic Disney movies, they end with the couple getting married and that’s it, it’s just the end.  We don’t get to see what happens after the credits roll but Adam and Eddy gave us, they gave us Emma, this beautifully, flawed and graceful duckling who blossomed into a powerful Swan, finding her own way towards her own happy ending.  

Emma has not been an easy character to love from the beginning. I will freely admit that she was not my favorite character in season one, but I think that was because there was a lot that we didn’t know about her history yet.  But what I love about her character is how she’s matured through the seasons, and that journey started with learning to accept love into her life.  There’s so much I can say about what I love about Emma Swan, but at the core of what I love about her, is her journey when it comes to love.  

And Killian Jones.  There’s so much I can say about what I love about him. I love his ability to love, the love and the depths he will go to for the people he loves.  This man has seen so much heartache and pain in his life and he did the hardest thing, anyone can do, he made a decision to change his life and begin to believe in love again.  He still has his flaws, that will always be there, as well as his self-loathing but he is learning to be a better person and truly learning from his mistakes and moving on.

Onto the fan side of things, my longest running fan project, my true love meta.

I had never tackled anything like my true love meta before. I set ground rules for myself, (only canon material), and as far as source material was concerned, I covered it all.  I started writing my monster of a meta back in season 3 and when I think about what it has evolved into now, it’s basically a college thesis. If I were to put it all into one document, it would probably take days or weeks to read everything.

It’s been trying, there have been periods where I’ve procrastinated when I shouldn’t have but at the end of the day, I am very proud of what I have accomplished.

Writing something like that, it’s a big task.  This isn’t some fanfiction where it has chapter limits, the meta continues for as long as the show is on the air. Because the journey of true love and happy endings is on-going.

But I can breathe a large sigh of relief, now that the show is ending, I can finally leisurely go back editing, and filling in gaps in my true love meta. It’s selfish but I’m also not worried about time constraints or hiatuses between seasons.  

There’s also my fanfictions.  I’ve come to think of writing fanfiction, in general, as expanding and growing my writing skills.  Creative writing is something I’ve loved for a very long time.  I just love writing and telling stories.  I’ve written stories in the Once fandom that I truly love.  

My first full-length Captain Swan fanfic is something that I will always hold a special place in my heart.  It was the first but there’s also the very first Captain Swan story I wrote, Family Gathering. It’s special because it was the first time I had an inkling that there was something truly special about Captain Swan. I began to feel the possibilities of where this ‘ship could go.  I don’t know how else to describe it, I just knew.

Almost 40 stories later, I still believe that.  Just because the show is ending, doesn’t mean that the love story is done.  

I’m certain, as long as my fellow ‘shippers continue writing Captain Swan, I will be reading and writing more stories too.

When I think back to the beginning of this year, I wrote two lengths full Captain Swan fanfics, back-to-back. I kid you not.

Almost as soon as one story was completed, I started writing another. I missed most of the Olympics because I was so deep in the zone to focus my attention elsewhere.  It was exhausting but I’m very proud of the end result of both and I look forward to posting them one day.

I also continue to be in awe of the creativity that exists in the Once fandom. I’m a writer, that’s my passion but I also really envy some of the graphic artists and digital artists too.  If it weren’t for Once Upon a Time, I wouldn’t have found some of these artists.  I will forever love Svenja’s work, Sarah Mac, just to name a few.  

I also have some favorite Once fanfic writers.

The girl is the queen of Captain Swan smut, like, oh my god.  I know her Jones trio stories aren’t for everyone, but I fucking love them. I’m also going back and reading some of her earlier stories too, and it just gives me warm fuzzy feelings.  She knows how to balance, smut, angst and straight-up sexiness.

And @freedomatsea (Maggie).  Her Captain Swan stories were the first I ever read, and then I learned later, omg, we live in the same state, only mere hours away from each other and there was that time I dreamt that we met a party. I still feel like we could meet one day, and maybe one day we will.

I know I don’t read stuff from fanfiction.net anymore, or even post things there, but I love Montana-Rosalie’s modern AU's.  I’ve read two of her stories, All We’ll Ever Need and Straight to You, and they’re both just so beautiful and I would almost say, like watching a movie.  If Captain Swan were a movie, a modern AU movie, Montana would be the screenplay writer.  I hope she would be.

As much as the Once fandom has seen its share of drama (and there’s been lots of it), there’s also been lots of love and happiness too.  No matter what you ‘ship or who your favorite character is, we all love this show.

For the remaining episodes,  I want to focus on that. The positivity and the love.
