Feminist Design
What can feminist design be? Or what can aspects of feminist design be? I think about questions based on design-related projects. Who are the projects from? And for whom? And what anyway? Are you feminist? Why? Why maybe (at the same time) not? Which Feminism? Who is being considered? And who doesn't?

Post 1: Introduction + Olli looking at food
So I actually decided to delete Instagram / social media about a year ago, because it messed up my mental health and sleep quite a bit. I had a great run for a couple of months and I enjoyed the peace of mind I had, but then I made the crucial mistake to install reddit and joining r/Austria, where I debate racists late at night and early in the morning. From that I learned that they only care about surface level stuff (who would have thought) when discussing any topic. Anyways, here I am adding another layer to my social media addiction all in the name of getting my MSc degree :D
To make the post more positive, I want to show you some pictures of one of my cats named Olli, in which he wants to have some of my food. Although he is a carnivore, he also enjoys vegan food apparently. Sometimes I ask him if he is a "Waschbär", because he wants to eat pretty much everything he can get his paws on, however he never answers this question and always pleads the 5th.

Exactly one year after we met each other at NXS World's Algorithmic Anxiety bootcamp, nvisible.studio and me can celebrate this artistic anniversary with the first official announcement of our collaborative multidisciplinary research project ZHŌUWÉI.NETWORK. ~~~~~ ZHŌUWÉI.NETWORK investigates visceral implications of datafication through worldbuilding and cinematic communication.
It is focused on the imaginative development of three alternative near-future societies steered by different ideological paradigms." ~~~~~

"What claims our attention is the veritable Gulf that separates all bodily Sensations, pleasure or pain, desires and satisfactions-- which are so private that they cannot even be adequately voiced, much less represented in the outside world, and therefore are altogether incapable of being reified-- the mental images which lend themselves so easily and naturally to reification that we neither conceive of making a bed without first having some image, some “idea” of a bed before our inner eye, nor can we imagine a bed without having recourse to some of visual experience of a real thing."Arendt, Hannah, and Margaret Canovan. Why are bodies so often negotiated in feminist design? Understand your own body as an organism. I am not only human, but many other living beings make me a living being. Networks instead of individualism. Recognition of what we have in common, contrary to the focus on what is supposedly created alone. For when ever can that even be the case?

This week I have been teaching a Masterclass at School of Visual Communication, Haderslev as a part of their semester module Creative concept development. The students have been using mechanisms from Critical Design + their visual communication skills to design concepts that makes you think, rather than getting you to buy. A busy week going through defining a problem the students believe is relevant, doing research, finding data, interview/observations, analyse, idea generaration, prototyping, production and communicating their final concept. #criticaldesign #grafiskkommunikation #skolenforvisuelkommunikation #ucsyd #haderslev #schoolofvisualcommunication #design #school #creativity #creative #students #designthinking #research #conceptdevelopment #visualcommunication @skolevisuel.dk @grafisk_skolevisuel (at Haderslev, Sonderjylland, Denmark) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHANvc0hvv3/?igshid=r1h1t295h742

Grana vs La Máquina
Tumblr media
Grana vs La Máquina [Cochineal vs The Machine] was an academic project initiated by the School of Architecture, Art and Design at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico City, in collaboration with Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Taking as inspiration the upcoming Cooper Hewitt exhibition Nature by Design: Cochineal, this project sought to generate a critical response around the relationship between design and Mexican culture by making objects using cochineal and digital manufacturing. Led by José de la O (Studio José de la O) with the collaboration of Christina De León, Associate Curator of Latino Design at Cooper Hewitt, the project was carried out at two Tec Monterrey campuses in the Mexico City region (CEM and CCM) with industrial design students in their senior year.
Tumblr media
Cooper Hewitt’s forthcoming show Nature by Design: Cochineal will explore the legacy of cochineal and its innovative use among contemporary designers. Cochineal, a small parasitic insect, was for centuries the source of a red dye that held economic and cultural importance to indigenous peoples of Mexico. Upon European contact in the sixteenth century, it became a widely traded global commodity until the invention of synthetic dyes in the mid-nineteenth century, which caused its profit value to diminish significantly. With this context in mind, students were given the design challenge to fabricate a digital manufacturing machine using cochineal as the primary material to produce objects that would stimulate discussion or criticism on Mexican culture.
"Having such a long and complex history in Mexico cochineal is a super interesting vehicle for students to not only explore their culture, but to question and redefine their Mexican identity."     -José de la O
The students used critical design research methodologies to generate questions on socio-cultural issues such as national identity, craftsmanship, economy, and mysticism. Critical or speculative design is a discipline that uses design tools as a way to understand and address complex societal problems. With the collaboration of De León, students were able to obtain feedback on their narrative and concept development, fabrication techniques, as well as their innovative use of cochineal.

Research Statement:
-How might we use digital art to explore feminism and illustration?
Goal:
What you want to achieve with your piece.
-How can we use art to create social change and make a political statement?
Design values: “Handles” , help determine success. Handles are important to give your work values/anchors.
My design values: Brave, feminist, boundary-pushing, honest, fun, rebellious, political statements, creative, seeking truth, creating connection, facilitating action/change for social good.
Form: My project is a digital feminist Zine that is designed to be a container for art/illustrations/words exploring feminist themes. A digitally interactive and responsive zine, depending on where the reader clicks on the pages and their actions. I would like the form to be a digital magazine that has a game/interactive component based on code logic (i.e. conditionals “if” -> “than” coding.) It will be an interactive digitalfollow your own adventure Riot Grrrl zine.
I love collage, word-collages, and incorporating writing/poetry into collage work. I’m especially excited about illustration as well. The work of INDIE 184 is definitely some that I would like to pay homage to or emulate in the design of the feminist DigiZine. AIKO’s work is also sort of the aesthetic I would like for the DigiZine to pay homage to.
The political posters of Shepard Fairey are what I would like to influence the illustrations and some of the general design aesthetic as well. There is an artist who does collage’s of bobble head characters on top of cut outs of models from magazines around the East Village, with words of inspiration - her name is:
An idea that may or may not be out of reach: include “sound collage” elements that are click-able (i.e. quotes from movies/music tracks that layer, depending on where you click.) I have been listening to an album by a peer/online friend that I think is really inspiring sonically - it incorporates sound collage elements layered over the music/beats he made. So, for example, he has taken quotes from a character talking on the show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and recorded that over a guitar track loop and beats. I think that is somewhat advanced in terms of music production and I’m just not quite there yet - but I could definitely break it down into click-able quotes/music tracks that play when different elements are pressed, or as a reaction to the user in the space of the digital zine (I’ll refer to it as the DigiZine.)
Since visiting the BeyondTheStreets art exhibit in Brooklyn with Mary Anne, Age, and Jill on Sunday, I have been researching graffiti and street artists. The artists that really stood out to me at the exhibit were Lady Pink and AIKO, the feminist street artists who incorporate feminine visuals and feminist themes into their graffiti and street art illustration. I really love the work of INDIE 184 and her work especially resonates with me because it’s similar to my own, and we are both Norwegian/New Yorkers. She utilizes collage and word collage in her street art and paintings, which is something that I also do and am drawn to. I would like to heavily incorporate illustration, painting, collage, poetry, word art, and sound collage into the DigiZine.
An element that I would like to allow my audience to interact with is the “circle of privilege” - which maps intersectionality. I think it would be cool for there to be a circle of privilege interactive unit on one page.
Consequence of your idea:
-Social conequences
-Environmental Consequences (Digital Zine)
As opposed to cutting down and killing trees, a digital zine doesn't hurt our environment. Social consequences - the goal of my form is to help a curious audience become more sensitive allies (men: help them become more sensitive to women if they don’t have women in their lives.)
Context: creates friction -> understand the specific context within systems where my form (DigiZine) exists/within. The DigiZine is a container for feminist artwork: collage, street art, illustration, word art, poetry, essay, graphic design, music.
The game/interactive element of the DigiZine allows the audience (target audience is a curious male who wants to be an ally but doesn’t have a lot of women in his life or experience with gender studies/feminism, but is open/curious/wants to become a better ally through learning. He likes: music, tech, learning, anime, art, illustration, punk rock.)
Narrative Story around my form (feminist DigiZine):
The culture of zines is linked to the creative music underground culture. I like the mysterious/underground element that sparks curiosity.
Audience:
“Johnny”: A guy who is single, doesn’t have sisters, who doesn’t have women in his life but who is smart, and self-educates himself on social issues to be more “woke” as they say. A guy who has good intentions and wants to be an ally, who is maybe drawn to music/punk/underground art and would be intrigued by street art and illustration as an entry point into understanding the feminine experience and feminism. The goal is for “Johnny” to leave having read the DigiZine with more sensitivity to the feminine experience and more information, awareness so that he can act as an ally.
“Riot Grrl Betty”: She is probably already a feminist activist, educated about gender theory/politics, and has some interest in feminism as an artist or just as a woman in society. She is interested in art and gaining inspiration, feeling heard/seen through the feminist DigiZine and exploring opportunities for taking action or being part of a community.
“Bryan”: -> Trans/gender identity questioning or non-conforming person - someone/anyone who comes to the digital feminist zine and feels like they have a wholesome home, where they are supported and can learn more. This audience can flip through the zine and feel represented/heard/inspired.
Target audience an open-minded male who wants to be an ally to women, but who may not have sisters/women in his life, may never have discussed feminism or taken gender studies courses. Also target audience includes: women who want to connect with other feminist artists, be inspired, share activism calls to action. The feminist DigiZine will also serve as a connector for feminists and allies - make people feel included, supported, seen. etc.
