There’s so much going on right now that it seems silly for me to put a focus on this, but it’s taken me so long to get here that I can’t help but be a little proud of myself. While it only took me three and a half years to finish my degree at @ulaverne it took me almost a decade from (barely) graduating high school to get to this point. During that time I managed to get three professional certificates from @chaffeycollege , volunteer/intern/work for an amazing nonprofit @musicsaveslives for 6 of those years, learn and experience what it takes to manage/edit professional social media accounts and make new lifelong friends. As trying as it’s been not necessarily matching the timeline I had once envisioned for myself, I don’t think I’d change it. Thank you to everyone who has believed in me and my journey, especially when I didn’t always believe myself. Reading Laterally (Week of 9-21-22)

About a couple of days ago, an influencer/content creator or blogger, as she calls herself, dived into fall fashion and included her life to influence people to have a good fashion sense. The blogger's name is Sonali Prabhu. She is located in Austin, Texas, and prides herself on her unique Amazon fashion pieces. I am guilty of mindlessly scrolling through TikTok and sending them to my boyfriend. TikTok is a valuable way of scrolling past the time. Her Amazon storefront helps a ton, too. She encourages her followers to go to her Amazon storefront for the best finds and as a way to be a micro-influencer. She not only follows the ever-changing trends on this app but does her makeup and even filmed her dinner party with a brand that collaborated with her. Sonali was pretty ecstatic to be doing this. On TikTok, she is known as @so_narly, and when I looked on Instagram at her name, it came up as the same username from TikTok. I dug further by going to Google to find my way around because even though she seems like the same person and her posts coincide with the posts on TikTok, I wanted to see if she has any background in being a fashion designer or has a good sense of style. The first website is her Instagram page. https://www.instagram.com/so_narly/?hl=en The second is her website, where she talks about her major and where she goes to school. Her age is a little off since she is 25, but current updates, such as photos of her recent dinner party, are accurate enough to believe she is the same person. "I am 21 years old, and I am currently a senior majoring in Radio/ Television at The University of Central Florida. I started blogging in early March 2015. Even though there are still many things to learn about the "blogging world," I'm ready to take them on! I began social media presence when I created my first Youtube video in 2013. I have always had a passion for fashion and makeup. However, after receiving many comments about my outfits and beauty routine on my Instagram and Twitter– I decided to help others through Youtube videos! I soon realized that everyone has different platforms they prefer, either videos or textual content, so I decided to start blogging about what I love!" https://sonarlylife.com/about/ Sonali Prabhu is a great human being and has beautiful work with all her photography skills. The third link is her LinkedIn, stating she is a college graduate from the University of Central Florida and currently lives in Austin, Texas. Even though she does not have a fashion education, she is dedicated to content creation, videography, photography, and freelancing photography, all of which give her great qualities to do great things. Though she does not have a degree in fashion, I do not believe anything less of what she promotes on her TikTok, though she does more videography because of her degree, as it comes naturally to her. I would have appreciated her going to a fashion designer school, but she does have other creative outlets.

Inspired by art, I was able to touch many people's hearts into understanding that we can be different, we can succeed as an art lover, son of God and a student. This being only my second semester here at UH has been quite hard to find friends. Especially with COVID among us making our biggest efforts to stay connected via the internet. It is necessary to have human contact with majors such as communication. I tried to navigate to the best of my abilities during my first semester and was able to create some friendships with my peers only to find myself saying goodbye as they walked the stage at their commencement ceremony. Leaving me at square one in the venture of on-campus classes at a new school such as UH.

I remembered that a few years back as I was figuring out what I wanted to major in and what university would be the best fit for my transfer. I reached out to one of my friends I met back in middle school as I was aware that she was soon to graduate from UH with a communications major. She was of great help then to explain her initial process as to how she decided on attending UH herself.

I recently reached out to my dearest friend Yasely Carrizales to get more insight into her experience and overall advice not only for myself but for all our freshmen or future coogs to come. Yasely graduated in Fall 2014 with a major in Broadcast Communications and a minor in Spanish. She mentioned that she knew she had a passion for communications and helping her community and just knew this would be the best career choice for her. UH was always her dream school aside from being near home. Yasely explained that her family is one of the most important reasons for her to stay in town as for most Latinos. UH would be a no-brainer choice for her as it would be for any other Hispanic/ Latino student.

Aside from the close commute to her family home UH was by far the University she felt was the best fit as she found it extremely inclusive in diversity. Yasely fit in like a glove and advised me of such inclusive ambient, years prior when I initially asked for her advice. I was fascinated when I found out she was working on El Gato Media Network. I would take a listen to the station when I knew she would be on and it was at that moment I was convinced I wanted to experience that myself. It was until I saw the amazing work Yasely has done thanks to her experience at EL Gato that she went on to work for some amazing radio stations like The Bull and Mega 101 for some time.

I took the opportunity of asking Yasely what advice would she give new students and her response was “ my advice to new students would be to focus on their studies, get involved with organizations, have a group of people who can help you and show you around, ask questions even if you think they are stupid, go to seminars and visit different colleges to make sure you do something that makes you happy”. Words that resonate so much as I know many new students might be thinking the same as I did once. Feeling overwhelmed, nervous, and maybe uncertain.

I initially wanted to study the same as Yasely did. The big reason being I also wanted to help out in my community and realized that this career path just like Yasely would generate me such an opportunity and platform to do so. I have now decided I want to major in Public Relations and minor in Journalism. Something I owe a lot to the amazing advice and mentorship from this amazing young woman I admire so much and look forward to possibly working alongside her in the near future.
