what fungus are you most hopeful/excited to see this season?
I'm kinda sad because summer here was really horrible with extreme drought and heatwaves, so I missed a lot of the most exciting shrooms that come out then like Butyriboletus frostii and Craterellus fallax and Old Man of the Woods, my beloved.
Now in October I just hope to see Grifola frondosa and Lepista nuda

FOTD #143 : fairy inkcap! (coprinellus disseminatus)
the fairy inkcap (also fairy bonnet, or trooping crumble cap) is an inkcap agaric fungus in the family psathyrellaceae. they are known for growing in huge clusters !! interestingly, unlike the name implies this fungus does not dissolve into ink in maturity. ^^
the big question : can i bite it?? yes - this species is non-poisonous.

Various Coprinellus sp., Inkcaps, Aotearoa. Photo credit me.
Here are some from over the past few months. The last photo is definitely not my best work, but oh well. I really wanted to get both the white and dark grey ones in focus but it didn't really work properly :((
Inkcaps are so called because, once they mature or are damaged/picked, they release an enzyme that causes a process called auto-phagicytosis, or self-digestion. The gills and cap then dissolve themselves into a thick foul tasting black substance, that you can use as ink!
I always look out for them so I can send them to @coprinellus-cluster hehe.

Coprinellus micaceus  - Mica Caps     +10p
Habitat: Usually seen growing in clusters from decomposing wood, rotting stumps, roots, and even buried wood. There are many similar lookalike species. You can find these year-round in the PNW region, but most abundantly come springtime.
Edibility: Edible! Described as watery, thin-fleshed, but otherwise tasty with medicinal qualities. Their habit of growing in clusters year-round make them an abundant option for a meal.
Spore Color: Dark brown to black
Gill Color: Gray becoming brown and soon deliquescing (liquidizing in age) into an inky black
Cap Color: Honey-brown or amber evolving to dark gray, striated partially to the center and distinguished by its coating of fine mica-like granules.
I need to know more!

It makes me kinda sad when I see someone say that Coprinellus micaceus isn't worth eating, or mistakenly says it contains coprine?
Because they grow in large enough clusters to be culinarily useful and personally, I like their flavour a lot. And, they also do not contain coprine, thus can't have any interaction with alcohol. :')

Fairy inkcaps (Coprinellus disseminatus)
These gorgeous, short-lived fungi will only last for a few days, appearing pure-white at first, as you can see in some of the smaller specimens here, then greying and turning brownish-grey to black before disintegrating.  They can appear in huge clouds at times, with hundreds covering a stump or fallen tree, and always remind me of clusters of tiny jellyfish hanging out.

fantasy, gothic and zombie for the spooky asks 🦇
AH im so sorry tumblr didnt tell me i had another ask and ive been so busy avoiding my exams but thank you for the ask! 🦇🎃
Fantasy -  What’s your favorite mythical character?
Oh boy, mythical? I'd love to have a more niche and specific answer considering I own like 7 different books on folk tales and myths i am just SO bad at actually reading them, but I do love a Gawain and a Morgana le Fay. There's something about a knight who is not very good at being a knight but also too good sometimes, and a lady who lives out in the woods casting spells and potions and generally having fun causing a bit of mayhem that i love.
HOWEVER there was one story in a scottish fairy tale anthology I read recently that was just delightful- about a wee bannock who decided he didnt want to be eaten so he ran all around the hillsides running into different people's houses to warm up by the hearth and they all wanted to eat him because he looked so tasty that he kept on running away until eventually he was eaten by a fox. That was fun
Gothic - Who’s your favorite macabre figure from history?
hMMMMmmmm does Fransisco Goya count? He's most well known for his black paintings and his works depicting the horrors of war, and I used him as an inspiration for my paintings in high school (alongside beatrix potter, which my painting teacher found very bemusing) and his black paintings are some of my favourite pieces of art! The one below I painted for high school using witches' flight as a model :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zombie - How long do you think you’d survive if a zombie apocalypse happened?
Oh boy, probably not very long. I know some very basic bushcraft skills if I needed to like, escape into the bush or something? but the wild pigs would probably scare me right back out, I have seen pig sign on hikes and walks before and I am Not a Fan. I know how to shoot a bow and arrow but I have not much experience shooting at a distance, since I didn't stay in the archery club long enough to move beyond 20 metres. I think my best shot would be forming a strong community and trying for some kind of self-sustaining group commune type thing, in which case I would be very happy to garden and sew and repair things and cook and clean and all that kind of stuff. Actually facing down zombies? Would probably just try to run away tbh, unless they are very slow and easily decapitated with like, idk, an axe tied to a branch or something.

Today’s Art Flood--Fungus
I study and collect all manner of wild fungi as a hobby--citizen scientist in the mycology field. So naturally, I make lots and lots of artwork that reflects this. I was especially productive last year making mycological drawings. From Top to Bottom:
“Morchella Magic”--an ACEO showing off Morchella elata--or a Black Morel mushroom. Morels in general are a super important gourmet mushroom. They are also gorgeous!
“Fungi Forest”-- So here's an 11x14" canvas painting I made for m' dad for Christmas one year that I hadn't gotten around to posting.  So many fungi species!
“Lepidella”--Cel-shaded Amanita mushroom. Just a beaut warty goodie.
“Coprinellus deseminatus”-- This is a common little coprinoid mushroom that you often can find in massive clusters in late summer and autumn. Cute lil things. Drawn on black paper with colored pencil.
“July Fungi”-- Fungi are lovely subjects! Especially for something so packed and busy and colorful as this scene. Includes Strobilomyces species and various coral mushrooms.

Fungi kingdom delights unlocked by Queensland’s wet summer weather
Heavy rain in elements of Queensland has awoken a hidden kingdom of fungi, and with it a passionate group of newbie mycologists.
Key factors:
Moist climate throughout a lot of Queensland triggers eruptions of fungus throughout the state
Newbie mycologists say there is a “world of discovery” obtainable as little is thought in regards to the kingdom of fungi
Specialists warn in opposition to selecting and consuming wild mushrooms
Queensland Mycological Society president Wayne Boatwright mentioned the moist climate was the important thing to a few of these exotic-looking fungi species coming to the floor.
“These mycelial networks reside underground and hidden away in timber and we’re fully unaware of them,” he mentioned.
“Unexpectedly when a rain occasion happens the mycelial community has the assets from the hydrostatic stress to provide fruiting our bodies.
“They produce these fruiting our bodies, or sporocarps, the sexual expressions of the fungi in the identical method {that a} flower is a sexual expression of a plant.”

Nonetheless a lot to find
For retired ecologist Barry Muir current rain in Far North Queensland has offered the proper alternative to additional his analysis into the area’s fungal species.
“I have been engaged on them right here for the final 5 years,” he mentioned.
“I might say that about 80 per cent of what I’ve discovered are both undescribed or does not fairly match the design of the fungi discovered down south.
“You choose up a ebook and also you say, ‘That is a such and such’, however then once you get into it you discover the spores are a little bit completely different or one thing else is a little bit completely different.”

Cyptotrama asprata fungus, typically known as gold tufts, have been documented alongside Australia’s east coast and into Tasmania.(Equipped: Wayne Boatwright)
In 2018 a State of the World’s Fungi report discovered that simply 150,000 of an estimated 3 million species of fungi had been recognized globally.
The Queensland Herbarium homes just one,145 species of fungi, two of that are naturalised to the state however not endemic.
In distinction, the herbarium holds about 10,500 plant species.

Mr Boatwright mentioned there have been massive gaps in collections and data.
“We estimate between 4 and 6 fungal associations with every of these timber so there must be round 46,000 information or fungal specimens in that library, however there is not,” he mentioned.
“This provides us a sign of how massive the hole is and the way little is thought in regards to the kingdom of fungi and, in an odd method, that is what makes it very thrilling.
“Mycology is the place botany was 150 years in the past and which means there is a world of discovery on the market.”
‘Folks had been afraid of them’
The fragile nature of fungi means it’s a battle in opposition to time to doc new species.
“The window of alternative to exit and uncover fungi may be very transient,” Mr Boatwright mentioned.

Barry Muir says parasitic department fungi draw vitamins from their host crops, and may ultimately kill them.(ABC Far North: Mark Rigby)
“Some sporocarps or fruiting our bodies will solely final minutes or hours.”
Among the many longer-lasting species present in Queensland are stinkhorns, which start fruiting as egg-like growths on the bottom.
“If you happen to pull one in every of them [the eggs] up and break it open you will see it is bought a gelatinous materials inside it, and inside that’s one other construction which is able to ultimately develop into the mushroom head,” Mr Muir mentioned.
“They’re those folks usually get of their gardens … they’re formed like a male organ they usually have a bad-smelling goop on the highest which is designed to draw blowflies.
“Within the outdated days, in England specifically, folks used to name them witches eggs they usually had been afraid of them.”
Picker’s peril
The pair usually warn folks in opposition to selecting and consuming wild mushrooms.
“I usually ask folks, ‘If you happen to noticed a ham sandwich laying on a log in the course of a forest, would you cease and eat it?'” Mr Boatwright mentioned.
“The actual drawback is with doppelgangers as there are loads of species that are look-alikes.

The dying cap mushroom seems much like grocery store varieties however could cause severe well being issues if eaten.(ABC Information: Iskhandar Razak)
“Folks will confidently discover a fungus or a mushroom and assume it is one thing it is not after which be doubtlessly staring down the barrel of a liver transplant with the intention to reside two weeks later.”
Mr Muir agreed.
“If you happen to gather fungi and eat them, all the time preserve two further within the fridge — one for the physician and one for the individual doing the post-mortem,” he mentioned.

Day 3 of #mushroomart One of my favourites, Mica Cap fungus or Inky Cap #mushroom Scientifically called Coprinellus Micaceus is a common species of fungus typically grow in clusters on or near rotting hardwood tree stumps or underground tree roots. Depending on their stage of development, the tawny-brown mushroom caps may range in shape from oval to bell-shaped to convex, and reach diameters up to 30 mm (1.2 in). In young specimens, the entire cap surface is coated with a fine layer of reflective mica-like cells that provide the inspiration for both the mushroom's species name and the common names mica cap, shiny cap, and glistening inky cap. A few hours after collection, the gills will begin to slowly dissolve into a black, inky, spore-laden liquid—an enzymatic process called autodigestion or deliquescence. The fruit bodies are edible before the gills blacken and dissolve, and cooking will stop the autodigestion process 🥰 To make this art on my little and cutest #hahnemuhle sketchbook, the mini zig-zag book I used the transparency #watercolours technique #mushrooms #mushroomhunting #mushroomsofinstagram #mushroomtattoo #mushrooms🍄 (at Oldcorne Hollow) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAdczz9De_j/?igshid=o8u56e2ircnj
