48 Hours in Boston

With its narrow one-way streets, hidden alleys and who-knows-what around every corner, downtown Boston is tailor-made for exploring on foot. In fact, the first thing a podcast mentioned was that this is an awful city to rent a car in - the colonial made-for-horse'n'buggy streets and aggressive drivers there make that car rental insurance they push on you mandatory.

Most websites list the Freedom Trail as the top attraction in Boston, and I'd have to agree - it is a great way to explore a ton of historic sites and the city in general. A line of red bricks guarantees you won't lose the trail, but I definitely encourage taking a few turns and exploring some of the side streets and alleys, especially in the area near The Bell in the Hand (established in 1795, supposedly the oldest continuously operating bar in the US, though some websites differ on this). My favorite parts of the trail were the three old cemeteries, all of which look like they're from a Stephen King horror flick and have graves dating to the late 1600's (including the graves of Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and other noteworthy patriots).

I had recently watched the Netflix series "This Is a Robbery," so I had to check out the Isabell Gardner Museum. True to the series, the 17 empty frames left behind in the $500 million unsolved heist are here, just hanging out empty! But I wasn't expecting the museum to be as awesome as it is (the series definitely did not do the museum justice here). It felt like wandering a huge mansion with all sorts of century old furniture, statues, display cases of artifacts and curios and a paradise-like courtyard. I didn't know much about the art history here, but did recognize some of the big names here from that college general ed course - Rembrandt, Raphael and Matisse to name a few.

The mandatory food requirement in Boston is the lobster roll sandwich, and I tried two (The Bell in Hand and Saltie Girl), both of which were delicious. For Boston Cream Pie go the original source, The Omni Parker Hotel, which is so haunted they will give you a list at check-in desk of the various hauntings over the years. Mike's Pastries also worth checking out!

If you're into the haunted and paranormal, check out the Ghosts and Gravestones tour (do a night booking!) - a trolley tour with a few stops in the old cemeteries and some Boston horror tales thrown in while on the ride.

I'm visiting Boston for the first time in a couple weeks! I was wondering if you had some recommendations for museums for another goth historical fashion minded person? Or neat cemeteries? I'd love to hear your preferences instead of a google search, if you would like to share. Thanks!

Cemeteries! We've got 'em. Highlights include King's Chapel, the Granary Burying Ground, Copp's Hill, the one on the Common, and Mount Auburn if you have time to get out into Cambridge. King's Chapel and Old North also have crypts, if you can get a tour thereof. THey do offer them; I just don't know the schedule.

Go see the Fashioning Sargent exhibit at the MFA, which is all about the clothing used in the famous Gilded Age portraits of John Singer Sargent, and the MFA in general. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is also amazing. Can't recommend the Gibson House enough- a house museum from 1860, and the perfect backdrop for goth photoshoots (just be nice to the tour guide and don't lag behind!). Not sure if the Nichols House is open year-round; I know Otis isn't, which is a pity. Those are both late 18th-early 19th century.

Check out the Public Library, too. The interior is incredible. Wander Beacon Hill soaking up the historical beauty. Try to get to Sewfisticated in Somerville for excellent deals on natural-fiber fabrics; you'll thank me when you get there, plus there's a four-story antique mall nearby. And in my opinion, Tatte has the best hot chocolate in the city.

Some pictures from my trip to Boston thus far. Hit a bunch of Revolutionary War, Lovecraftian, and Fallout 4 locations with @the-kalamity-kid and our dad. Followed the Freedom Trail from Copp's Hill Burying Ground down to the Boston Common. Then across the river to the USS Constitution. I'll have more photos at the end of the trip. I'm not using my phone as the primary device of record.

Aside from a week in Atlanta and some layovers during other trips, I've never really experienced the East Coast. I've never even seen the Atlantic in person. It's good to knock some of that out. I'm having a blast.

I have got used to the abuse I suffer because I am a woman, to the point that I can be called a whore and carry on answering questions about Boris Johnson’s law-breaking

Normally I have to wait until after I have appeared on the television, radio or in a paper to catch up on the abuse that comes into my inbox or Twitter feed incited by my exposure. This week as I appeared on the BBC’s Politics Live show no such waiting was required as I was doing it on Zoom from my office and I had foolishly left my email open while I was on the television. The feedback was live and direct.

It is disorienting appearing on a live show from your office. For a start, I couldn’t see any of those who I was talking to. All I could see was the image of myself. You don’t get to pick up on the social cues as you would in the studio so already it is a tough gig. Throw into the mix that while you are trying to answer a question put by an inquisitive journalist without making a fool of yourself and your party the thing that flashes before your eyes is an email subject title saying that you are a “dirty bought and paid for whore.”

In its entirety, the email read: “Just to let you know I will be actively campaigning to unseat you, f**k off to the tory party where you belong along with the trilateral plant and the rest of the neoliberal filth. Common c**t!” It’s quite hard to decipher, right? Someone seemingly with a left-wing dint is being both horrendously misogynistic as well as unbelievably snobby and classist. Classless I think we can all agree.

Worry not, I got some equally delightful ditties from right-wingers too. I once had a death threat after directly quoting Boris Johnson’s words. I’m an equal opportunities target.

Being referred to as a whore in this instance was in fact a gift. On the same show, the subject of misogyny as a hate crime and the fact that it currently isn’t classified as such was up for debate. It is not news that political women face this barrage of sexually charged and sexist crap all the time. It is a surprise to no woman in the country that misogyny is alive and well, it keeps us humiliated, controlled and, in the worst cases it leaves us mutilated and dead. Yet here we still are debating if such hatred should be treated equally to other hatreds.

It’s complex you see. Anyone who has paid attention will know that the thing about crimes against women such as domestic and sexual abuse are always described as “complex”. The failure to charge and convict rapists is apparently not the fault of patriarchal norms butting up against a crumbling justice system it’s because “it’s complex”. Domestic Homicide reviews point to how services and institutions failed to prevent murders of women and children because the cases were so “complex”. It’s funny how it is always the crimes and abuse of women that is considered complex. The idea that there is right, wrong and then complex cases is a burden shouldered almost exclusively by female rape victims, victims of misogynistic hate crime and victims of domestic abuse.

To the average Joe on the street, it would not be particularly complex to understand that a police officer accused, on multiple occasions, of flashing at a woman while being nicknamed “the rapist” by his colleagues shouldn’t have been able to serve. I think if I were to ask anyone in my constituency if that would be ok, the answer would be no. However, apparently, it was a complex case. That led to Sarah Everard’s killer being a card-carrying copper.

I have got used to the abuse I suffer because I am a woman, to the point that I can without blinking be called a whore and carry on answering questions about Boris Johnson’s law-breaking. I have also got used to the misogyny that means I have been flashed at, had male strangers masturbate in front of me, had people try to get me into their cars and, on refusal, be told that I am an ugly stupid bitch.

We have asked women politicians to make this part of their jobs, we have asked women and girls to do the labour of dealing with this as a normal part of their lives. We put a man on the moon twelve years before I was born, how about we stop saying men’s violence against women is complex and maybe set about stopping it without relying on women to do all the work for free, as usual.

When Jean Augustine arrived on Parliament Hill to be sworn in as an MP representing Etobicoke-Lakeshore in 1993, she was accompanied by two busloads of supporters there to witness her oath. But she also brought along, and kept with her throughout her 13 years in federal politics, a much bigger, albeit invisible, contingent: students (especially those who really needed what school could offer them), women blazing difficult career trails, single mothers and Black Canadians.

Those people she knew or had worked with or had been herself shaped the roadmap for what she worked to accomplish in the House of Commons.

“All the things that I’d been doing over the years, it seemed to me that resolutions to a lot of those situations had to be in the political arena,” says this year’s Lifetime Achievement recipient for the Maclean’s Parliamentarian of the Year Awards. “That it was people in power places that were making decisions that affected the lives of so many.”

She became an MP in her 50s, with a long career in education and community activism behind her, so she didn’t arrive in Ottawa chasing cabinet positions, Augustine says, but rather looking to craft real change in small, focused areas where she knew it mattered.

There are two accomplishments she readily points out as her proudest moments. The first was working with Sheila Copps to remove the rule that restricted statues on Parliament Hill only to dead monarchs or nation-building prime ministers; that change paved the way for Augustine to bring forward, as chair of the National Liberal Women’s Caucus, the motion that resulted in the Famous Five statue commemorating the women who fought the “Persons Case” for political equality. The second pride of her career was advancing the motion in 1995 that established February as Black History Month in Canada.

Augustine was elected as Canada’s first Black female MP, and in 2002, when she was named secretary of state for multiculturalism and status of women, she became the first Black woman in cabinet. She was always conscious of that extra mantle and the expectation of carrying the concerns, aspirations and potential of her community with her every time she walked onto the floor of the House of Commons.

Losing games has become so common with the Blackhawks lately this season that it’s not even surprising when it happens and tonight, I was more disappointed than shocked with them tonight.

In the 1st period, the Jets wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Paul Stastny and Neil Pionk gave them a 2-0 lead.

Although the Blackhawks had a chance to cut the lead in half with a power play goal by Ryan Carpenter in the 2nd period, the goal was disallowed due to being offsides. 

After that, the Jets continued to boost their momentum as Dominic Torinato and Kyle Connor extend the lead goal, making it a 4-0 game.

In the 3rd period, MacKenzie Entwistle broke the scoreless drought for the Blackhawks as he scored his 2nd goal of the season (with assists by Seth Jones and Kirby Dach), but Nikolas Ehlers scored to give the Jets a 5-1 victory.

I thought that the Blackhawks looked completely lost tonight compared to the way that they played on Monday and Wednesday night.

It also didn’t help that their chance to regain some much needed momentum after Ryan Carpenter scored that power play goal in the 2nd period vanished after it was disallowed and the Hawks were unable to get it back. 

The Hawks need to find a way to keep it together for three whole periods of hockey and start off their game ready to play instead of looking lost or playing sluggish. 

After tonight’s game, the Blackhawks are back in Chicago for a three-game homestead which begins on Sunday against the Nashville Predators. 

Even though the Predators have had somewhat of a “so-so” record this season, they can be a tough team to play against, so it’s important for the Hawks to put in a strong, hard-working effort against them in order to get a bounce-back win.

Every Grimm has two names—its common name (the one used in casual conversation) and its scientific name (the one used either by academics, or by those who want to be specific about the creature they’re describing). The names consist mostly of portmanteaus, puns, allusions to real-life concepts, and one-to-ones of their source inspiration (like mythological creatures).

These names are more or less exclusively for the benefit of the reader, seeing as a character in RWBY wouldn’t know Greek or Latin, or have any idea who Beowulf is. Regardless, we still have to call the Grimm something.

Etymology 1: Alabastet is a portmanteau of the words alabaster (a white mineral) and Bastet (an Egyptian deity with the head of a cat). The word alabaster is thought to be derived from the Ancient Egyptian a-labaste, “vessel of Bast.”
