Ctenophores have got to be one of the most under rated denizens of the Jersey Shore. Rainbows by day, glow sticks by night. Why is everyone not hyping the ctenophore?!
Animals that honestly are not talked about enough part 1
Now I could go on for a while about all the fascinating animals there are in the world that we, as a whole, tend to ignore. Not even in the whole world. We could look at the ocean alone and have about 3000 pages worth of insanity and mystery. Like, seriously, wtf are parrot fish. But I want to focus on the MASSIVE FRICKING MANTA RAYS???
Giant Manta Rays, also known as Devil Rays because they get caught in nets and they weigh around 6000 POUNDS so they’re pretty damn strong. They also have a wingspan of 30 feet long? OH AND ALSO THEY JUMP.
These GINORMOUS creatures can fly out of the water up to 2 meters high. Which I get isn’t THAT high compared to a dolphin or something, but if you take into account their weight, that’s like a human jumping idk 40 feet in broad jump. im not a mathematician, but ITS STILL FRICKING INSANE.
Saw two dung beetles rolling a poop ball down the street while riding out bikes a few days ago. Lol. Definitely interesting to watch, especially since they use their back legs to roll it.
In which inaccurate google results cause me to create "art"
There I was, preparing for teaching my class, and I wanted to find a nice figure to show the difference between the ctenophore and jellyfish life cycle. Often people think Ctenophores are the same as Jellyfish, and while both of those critters are jelloid, ctenophores are different. They're their whole damn phylum. PHYLUM! There are only 9 phyla total. What I'm saying is, they're some seriously unique critters.
So anyway, la de la, there I go, googling "ctenophore life cycle" and DEAR LORD, the top result is a picture of a jellyfish life cycle, complete with jellyfish, claiming it's a ctenophore life cycle! Shock horror!
Jellyfish life cycles are cool and weird, involving a polyp stage, and then a budding polyp stage that farts out little doilies that turn into Jellyfish. That is cool! We love that! But that's not what ctenophores do!
Gather 'round class. This is the difference.
Sometimes ya gotta make an emergency science doodle, ya know?
Ctenophores, with the exception of benthic ctenophores, which are also cool as hell, live their whole life up in the water. No bottom stage for them
Ctenophores are the coolest.
Here are some benthic ctenos

Sometimes, precious little need be said. Today is just one of those times. Because today, we celebrate the tardigrade: dinkiest water bear of the oceans, the mountains, and deepest darkest space.
Forgot to post this here but i made a dtiys from this artist on twt and it turned out pretty neat but drawing this amount of bubbles was a fucking pAIN 😔
Today’s been a tired day. I slept poorly, it’s still way too hot, the airflow is bad, we had to do laundry and cook, but once all that was done, I was sitting in my armchair relaxing and playing games on my phone. I suddenly felt a little tap on my bald head, and then a few steps towards my forehead, and then a spider lowered itself in front of my face, over my arm, and remained hanging there for a bit. I placed the little friend onto a nearby wall and it went on its merry way from there.
