The University of Barcelona's Medicine Faculty has temporarily installed a giant heart made by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, with the building's columns acting as the ribcage.
The objective of this work of art is to raise awareness about cardiovascular illnesses, which are the leading cause of death worldwide.
The work is titled El cor secret (The Secret Heart). The heart measures 13 metres tall and 10 metres wide, and weighs 150 kg. It's made of synthetic materials and painted by hand. It had previously been shown in Germany in 2014 and was supposed to arrive to Plensa's home city sooner, but it was delayed because of covid. Instead, in 2020, Plensa donated one of his famous head sculptures to this same building, to thank medicine professionals and students for their work during the pandemic.
Never have truer words been spoken. But they come as good news for Tumblr's sewing community, however, who have been sewing some absolute delights. Some real œuvres d'art. Some winner-winner chicken dinners.
As luck would have it, #sewing is trending. And it's trending right now, so we have reaped a selection of these very dinners for your eyes only. We have then asked ourselves just what did we do to deserve y'all, and your resplendent talents.
This is my first attempt at embroidery. This type is called Blackwork: characterised by simple monochrome backstitch on coarse woven coloured cloth. It lends itself to geometric designs that look quite modern and is easy to do. I set out with a simple Roman cross motif, then added in alternating diagonals. It has a slight op-art effect!
The Knit Club at 3Space International House (Craft Forward)
The Knit Club at 3Space International House, Brixton in June 2022.
The Knit Club is a relaxed and welcoming knitting group, open to beginners and experienced knitters to work on their knit or crochet projects together and connect with other local creatives.
This time, we encouraged participants to bring their own projects to work on. The Knit Club is still open to anyone interested in approaching crafting and textile art for the first time, but the session was structured favouring more independent making, rather than working on the same square pattern as we did previously.
