a/n: Here’s my soulmate au for day 6 of @aosficnet2 ‘s AoS AU August! It’s got Modern Man!Daniel Sousa based on Enver’s appearance as a police officer in The Avengers.

Daisy “Quake” Johnson - Inhuman, hacker, Agent of SHIELD, and now she could add “Avenger” to her list of descriptors. The agent hadn’t been entirely surprised when she’d received an impromptu meeting with Director Nick Fury about her powers. At the time he had told her he was putting together a team, a group of people with super-human abilities that would work together to defend the world if the threat arose. She had signed on, she was already a SHIELD agent and she’d had plenty of training with her ability from her mom growing up at Afterlife, but she never met the team. Well, until about 24 hours ago. They were a bit of a nightmare (a complete shitshow if she was being blunt), none of them had worked together before so it was no surprise that they were butting heads. Daisy got along just fine with Natasha Romanoff aka the Black Widow as the two of them had crossed paths from time to time within SHIELD, but she couldn’t say the same for scientist Bruce Banner (the Hulk), billionaire Tony Stark (Iron Man), or the first-ever superhero Steve Rogers (Captain America). Of course, now they were also dealing with a Norse god of thunder who was supposedly good and his brother who was apparently bad. Thor, Stark, and Rogers: three massive egos in one aircraft.

Judging by the footage they were streaming from the museum Loki was more than just bad. Daisy had always been wary of powers, her mom had taught her that. Power was extremely dangerous when put in the wrong hands, that’s why Afterlife was so selective in choosing who got to go through terrigenesis. Loki was clearly the wrong hands and even though she really hated the men she was surrounded with, if they were the world’s only hope then she’d put up with them.

“So you expect me to believe there is life on other planets?”

Daisy sighed, trying not to get too frustrated. The man had been in the ice for seventy years, he missed a lot and probably had no reason to expect that “aliens” existed. Of course, she had known the truth since she was a child: not only was it highly probable that life existed elsewhere in the galaxy, but she was part-alien herself. Of course, no one else knew that. Inhumans were a secret from the rest of the world and it would need to stay that way.

“Oh, I’m sorry Seismic Activity, did you know that already?” Stark asked sarcastically, raising a brow at her and she rolled her eyes.

“It’s Quake, actually, and yeah, I knew that, statistically, it was highly probable that alien life exists,” she bit back, glaring at the man, “Just about everyone in this century knows that.”

“Agent Johnson if you have some sort of issue with when I was born then you should just come out and say it,” Cap said, a frown on his face as he sat up in his chair.

“Look, I couldn’t give two shits whether you were born yesterday or a thousand years ago, I just don’t think we really have time to be debating extraterrestrial life right now,” Daisy said, fighting the urge to roll her eyes again as she gestured to the holoscreen displaying Loki’s cell.

“She’s right, gear up.” Director Fury said. Daisy wasn’t sure when he had entered but she was glad he was taking her side. “We’re under attack.”

Daisy nodded, rushing out of the room to find her gauntlets and her weapons. It wasn’t a great idea to quake on a giant helicarrier so she’d probably be fighting old school.

“Woah, what the hell is that Johnson?” Natasha Romanoff was sneakier than Fury and Daisy hadn’t even known she was in the room until her wrist was tightly in the woman’s grasp.

She sighed, tugging her arm out of the redhead’s grip and slipping on her gauntlet to cover the writing. The marks weren’t uncommon, most of the world had them. They developed at age 16 and were usually the first words your soulmate said to you. However, not everyone got one or soulmates died and SHIELD specialized in utilizing the soulmark-less. That’s not to say there weren’t agents with soul marks in the organization, for ordinary agents SHIELD held a mostly don’t ask, don’t tell policy. Typically the only way to get into high-risk assignments like the Avengers was to prove the lack of a soulmate, but of course, the Avengers were less than typical.

“They make exceptions for people with powers.” She brushed it off, slipping on her other gauntlet.

“That doesn’t change the fact that you’re connected to someone,” Natasha argued and Daisy huffed, turning away.

“Stark’s got a mark, and he’s actually met his soulmate. If something happens to me mine’ll never know what they missed.”

Daisy quickly slid her various knives and guns into place in their holsters before leaving, effectively putting an end to one of the worst conversations she’d had in a while. She didn’t need the Black Widow to guilt-trip her, she had herself for that. She’d heard the stories about the pain people felt when their soulmate died and it often kept her up at night, but right now she had a job to do and she’d be damned if she sacrificed the world for one person she hadn’t even met.

Of course, her dedication to the cause hadn’t mattered much, she still wound up on the floor of the helicarrier with Phil Coulson bleeding out. She didn’t know the man super well, but he was usually the agent present whenever an 0-8-4 was discovered and since Daisy was something of an 0-8-4 herself, they crossed paths pretty frequently. She knew he was an upstanding and kind man, she knew he was a good agent, and she knew he didn’t deserve to die like this.

It wasn’t long until Fury came and swept him away and Hill ushered her back into the briefing room where some of the others were gathered. They all looked worse for wear and apparently they were about ready to give up. The Hulk was gone, Loki had jettisoned Thor from the airship, and he has the tesseract and would likely be taking over earth shortly. Daisy couldn’t believe it.

“I just watched several good agents die, and you want to throw in the towel? Do you have any respect for yourselves?” She questioned, glaring at Rogers and Stark.

She stormed out when she was met with silence, passing Fury in the hallway. She wanted desperately to change out of her skintight Quake suit and get cleaned up, but she wasn’t ready to give up the fight yet, opting instead to unzip the top half, tying the sleeves around her waist. She wandered around the ship like that, her sports bra the only thing covering her torso, before finding herself on the top deck, leaning over a railing.

“Have you met them yet?”

Daisy turned to see Rogers gesturing to her wrist where the words “Who the hell are you?” were written in a neat script.

“Nah,” she shook her head, barely concealing her disappointment with a smile.

“You’ll find them eventually, or they’ll find you.” He gave her a tight-lipped smile.

“Thanks for not berating me for risking my life while my soulmate is out there somewhere.”

“Hey, I hid my makr to join a highly experimental drug trial and enlist in World War Two so I don’t have much room for judgment.” He joked and Daisy laughed, feeling a little better.

Daniel Sousa had been sure this would be another day at the station as he slipped his uniform over his shoulders, covering the soulmark on the back of his shoulder. Soulmarks appeared when a person turned 16, appearing at the place where their soulmate would first come in contact with them. The combination of the location of his mark and the words (“Probably your only chance at survival now let me go”) had always been a mystery to him though he hoped he would solve it soon.

He took the subway to the station, just like he did every morning. Daniel was a police officer for the 99th precinct in NYC which was about a fifteen-minute subway ride away from his apartment. Despite its obvious flaws (thanks MTA), he liked taking the subway - it was more environmentally friendly than driving himself, it was much faster than trying to make it through New York traffic or walk (though sometimes he did walk when it was nice and his leg wasn’t bugging him as much), and the crowds increased the probability that he’d come across his soulmate.

She wasn’t on the subway today again and so Daniel resigned himself to daydreams of how they might meet. He hoped it would be romantic, that she’d bump into him accidentally (it was the best way he could explain the back of his shoulder), maybe he’d catch her as she tripped over him and they’d lock eyes and she’d take his breath away. He pushed away the fears that she would be freaked out by his prosthetic or the fact that her words on his shoulder didn’t fit that scenario at all. He wanted their meeting to be perfect for her.

He was ripped away from his thoughts by his partner, Jack Thompson, telling him they had to go check out a call downtown. There weren’t any detectives involved so it likely wasn’t anything serious- probably a noise complaint or something equally mundane.

Daniel had been right, the call was a typical noise complaint, easily solved and probably ignored as soon as they left the building (Jack bet they’d be back in 24 hours, Daniel gave it 32). However, he never could’ve guessed that when they went to climb back into the squad car a portal would open up in the sky and a bunch of space creatures would attack earth. Thompson grabbed the radio to inform the station of the situation. It took a few minutes of convincing (he didn’t blame them, he only believed it because he was seeing it) and a few more to figure out what to do (there really isn’t an official protocol for Hostile Alien Invasion) before they were told to stay put and that backup was on the way.

Daniel reached for his gun, steeling himself for the fight he was sure he was about to be involved in. An alien invasion would be a really bad time for his crippling ptsd. Still, he was sure his hand would shake if he had to actually lift his gun, his finger would hesitate on the trigger, he’d have to fight to keep his eyes open because if he closed them all he’d see was Afghanistan.

“Sousa you with me?” Thompson asked, snapping him from his thoughts.

He nodded, letting out a shaky breath, when had he stopped breathing?

Thompson nodded, more to himself than to Daniel, “Good, cause we’re going to get through this.”

If she had been really thinking at all, she might’ve wondered if she was having an out-of-body experience as she moved through the streets of Manhattan with the purpose of a woman on a mission. The Avengers were scattered across the borough trying to fight the Chitauri with mixed success. It seemed like no matter how many they blasted, quaked, shot, or struck with lightning more kept coming through the portal. Daisy was taking out as many of the aliens as she could while trying to command the local police forces- badges or not, they were purely human and severely underprepared to fight this threat. Their services were more equipped to evacuate and protect the civilians.

She hadn’t been paying attention when she knocked into someone’s shoulder. It was a police officer, she noticed, though where most of the officers she’d seen seemed ready to take on the Chitauri head-on, he looked terrified.

“Who the hell are you?” The man questioned, quickly grabbing her wrist before she could run off.

“Probably your only chance at survival now let me go.” Daisy bit back angrily and the man gasped, dropping her arm and backing away like she had burned him.

“You’re- we’re-” The man stuttered and even though he could’ve been about to say anything (maybe “you’re Quake!” or “We’re gonna die!”) Daisy knew exactly what he meant. She knew from the burning sensation on the wrist he had been holding. He was her soulmate.

“Oh my god, I don’t have time for this!” Daisy yelled angrily, quaking the alien that had appeared behind the man.

She silently cursed fate or destiny or whatever was behind this for planning her soulmate meeting during a literal alien invasion.

“Listen, I need you to leave the frontlines- spread the word: all officers are to evacuate as many civilians as possible. Focus on protecting them.” She ordered making an effort to put the world-altering event before the life-altering event she had accidentally just stumbled upon.

“Who’s going to be there to fight?”

Daisy quaked another approaching Chitauri soldier. “Leave that to the people with powers.”

The officer nodded mutely, seemingly stunned into silence.

“Sousa!” Another officer called out, “Quit chatting we have a job to do!”

The dark-haired officer, her soulmate, nodded to the man and started to move away.

“Officer Sousa!” Daisy called, taking steps backward herself, “Maybe we can get some coffee when this is all done?”

“Sure but how’ll I find you?” He asked, turning back to stare at her hopefully.

Daisy’s steps were picking up speed, the urgency of the day not lost on her. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll find you!”

And with that she was off, turning on her heels and sprinting towards Stark Tower.

Daisy stared at the computer monitor in front of her. It had been a few days since the Chitauri attack and while New York and her mental state was still a disaster, she needed to do this. The file she had found in SHIELD’s database was a welcome distraction, as was the handsome face staring back at her from the screen.

Daniel Jordan Sousa. Born 1984 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Served one tour in Afghanistan before being discharged due to an injury resulting in the amputation of his left leg.

She had shaken her head at Fury when she found out. “You manipulative son of a bitch,” she had said though she had meant it fondly. Who knows what would’ve happened when the Chitauri invaded if he hadn’t done what he had.

Daisy and Daniel joined scientist duo and soulmates Jemma Simmons and Leopold Fitz as well as Coulson’s soulmate Melinda May on the Bus, a giant plane Fury had given Coulson as reparations for his death. The team had its bumps in its initial missions but they quickly became a tightly knit family that only grew when Coulson took over as Director of SHIELD after the Hydra takeover.

Journalism 101 for writers: a writing guide to media

When I was a little girl, I asked my mother what college course I had to graduate in to be a writer. She said none, but that I had to do one either way. So, with no writing majors in the country, I chose journalism. I hated every second of it, but hey, I have a piece of paper that says I understand these matters. And today, I come to bestow upon you the knowledge I’m cursed with and to beg, to please, stop with the blaming the messenger in your pieces of media. Journalists are people too.

How to write a news article in your WIP?

This is what gets writers every time. We can see you struggling and it’s okay. We understand. People (like me) go to school to learn how to write news. But it’s really not hard. And believe me, it can help you in the rest of your writing too.

Key word in journalism is hierarchy. Hierarchy for the win.

We work on an inverted pyramid scheme. Don’t worry, I’m not about to ask you to join. It’s a writing technique. What is more important comes first in the inverted pyramid. What is more general, what is more important, what will the people want to know more must be in the first paragraph. This first paragraph is called the lead. In the lead, all (or most of the) W questions must be answered: what, where, when, who and why. Remember, in journalism there is no “spoiler”. The point of a journalistic article is to spoil, to give information.

When you’re done with the lead, you start on going to slightly more specific information and slightly less vital to the understanding of the article. Therefore, going forward down the inverted pyramid. Take a look at some articles and you’ll easily identify the structure. Simple, right?

But Bean! How will I know what is more important than the rest? I’m not trained in journalism! I don’t even like journalism!

Neither do I. But we journalists have a little… Cheat sheet. They’re called news values. News values are what we look for when organizing our articles and our overall pages. What is a journalist’s routine like?

Pure madness. But organized madness. Day-to-day goes a little bit like this.

Morning meetings (you’ve probably seen in movies) to decide what will be pursued during the day. Themes are suggested, but themes are not news. When you offer a theme, you must also offer someone who could be interested in talking to your company, how long you will take to do it and if you need someone else to go with you.

And there is not a lot of competition: if you suggest something and it gets picked up, you might not be the one to do it - because it’s not your specialty, because you have other assignments, because you don’t have the contacts. But that’s not a big deal. We’re not all egocentric maniacs. Mostly, we just want the paper to run or for the segment to air. Doesn’t matter whose name is up there. In your career, you’re going to do so many of these you won’t even care anymore. Besides, newsrooms don’t have that many people anymore. It’s not unusual for people to have to do two or more stories at once.

Some days are slow. There is not that many notable events happening everyday. That’s why we use “drawer” news. Things that are kept “just in case” nothing comes up. Stories that don’t get old, like a recurring club in the local library or a short human interest story. This is what newbies in fiction whine about. But relax, they’ll be stuck with it for a day. There will surely be more news tomorrow. It’s not a big deal.

After the morning meeting, everyone goes out their desks to make calls or into the city. Like I said, newsrooms don’t have a lot of people and a lot of roles were suppressed.

In online and printing, nowadays, the journalist goes on their own, makes the interviews, take the pictures, comes back into the room, writes and publishes it on the website, or sends to the editor for printing. In TV, journalist and cameraman take a regular car (unless they’re doing a live insertion on the news segment) drive themselves, collect interviews, extra footage, write a script for the editors, go back, record the off voices and take it to the editing room.

And deadlines are very real. If you don’t meet the deadline, something will have to go on the air/ on the paper. Feel the pressure yet?

What about investigative journalists? Like in Spotlight! Ah. That’s not a thing. I mean, it is. But only in specialized companies focused on investigative journalism. Nowadays, news companies don’t have the money to keep recurring investigative teams. It costs a lot of money: pay salaries, pay for their moving around to do interviews… And it can take several months to investigate something that will get published in a week (or get stumped and not get published at all).

That doesn’t mean they’ll never get investigative pieces. But normally journalists will investigate on their own (paying for their own travelling costs, etc) and the company will only get involved when it’s time to publish it. That is, if it’s not against their own interest. Which takes us to the next segment.

Are journalists life-sucking, money seeking unresponsible pricks?

No. They get bad reps, but they’re merely the messenger to both good and bad news. Most times, they hardly have control over the things they have to write/produce. They’re overworking, underpaid, and the clock is ticking. Something has to go up, something has to be printed.

I’ve seen this time and time again in entertainment. Normally it takes the figure of the editor-in-chief. They’re not bad people. They’re demanding, hell yes. A nightmare to their journalists? Sometimes. But that’s their job. If they don’t have a strong hand, the paper won’t go out, the segment won’t air. That doesn’t make them bad people and they’re hardly as bad as you see out there in media (well, mine was, but I’m sure he’s just an odd case).

Why do we get a bad rep? Well, allow me to introduce the real bad guys of the story. Company owners.

Doesn’t matter who they are. Millionaires. Corporations. Politicians. They always manage to stall the advancing of news as they’re supposed to be. There’s no fighting them, they’re the ones that pay. Their relations and their interests dictate what goes in the news. This is called Agenda Setting. Look it up.

Sometimes editor-in-chief will try and discuss these matters, but their power only go so far. In my city, we had a scandal involving the school I went to. The biggest newspaper of the city set on investigating, had the whole thing ready to go. Editor-in-chief was giving full support. They were forbidden to publish. Why? In comes the other villain of journalistic tales.

Advertisers. The school had a two page ad in a coveted spot at the middle of the newspaper. As much as people claim journalism is important, it can’t sustain itself. It has always depended on advertisement. So when big advertisers complain to the owners, the company loses money. And in the end, that’s the objective of a company. Making money. Make no mistake. We are all aware of how journalism is vital to society, but everyone wants to eat and pay rent at the end of the month.

Of course, there are independent newspapers, some really awesome people who dedicate their lives to producing quality journalism independently. Are they successfully? Not normally. But they’re out there! So don’t think everything is always hopeles and your adorable OC will have to sell their soul to this terrible state of journalistic indecency.

“Breach incoming!” Team Flash cautiously approached the breach room, prepared for any hostile enemy that could enter. Instead, a familiar Kryptonian popped through.

“Kara! Hey!” Barry went to give her a hug but she held her hand up. It was only then he noticed how out of breath she was.

“No… time…” she pulled his arm. “Speedster… breached… come…”

After speeding off to get his suit, the two hopped dimensions.

“We have time. Catch your breath,” Barry instructed the blonde girl. She shook her head.

“We don’t have time. This woman opens breaches at such a fast speed that it catches people as they run away. People of National City have been disappearing, all after coming in contact with her, we don’t truly know the extent of her powers.”

He nodded as listened. “And what about the speedster?”

“She is the speedster.”

His mouth went slightly agape, now understanding the severity of this foe. “Well we just have to be faster.” Kara took one last deep breath and blasted into the sky, Barry following close after.

Unlike speedsters connected to the speed force, this woman didn’t have lightening. In fact, she didn’t have any indicators that she should be moving that fast, making her harder to track and harder to follow. Her transdimensional connection to the multiverse was impossible to track unlike breaches, and before Kara and Barry could even process what was in front of them, they were running full speed into one of her breaches.

“Alright cut! That’s it for today! Great job everyone.” Kara and Barry looked around in confusion and concern. A group of people stood around them with cameras, chairs, and lights, all clapping.

“Uh thank you?” Barry responded to the strangers. The people dispersed into their own conversations, cleaning their equipment and grabbing their things. “Kara?” Barry whispered.

“Yeah, Barry?” She responded, relieved that this was the Barry she knew.

“Where are we?”

The two wandered around the populated area, trying to find any leads.

“We must be in a parallel universe. Just, which one?” Kara whispered.

“Obviously it’s one where we exist. They didn’t seem to not recognize us. Maybe this us was filming a message to National City.” He responded. Before he could continue, a man approached the two.

“Grant, Melissa, there was a change to tomorrow’s script. Jesse cut the DEO scene and added a new apartment scene. The pandering to the Karry shippers will boost the ratings for sure.” The man smiled and handed the two packets of paper. “Get some good rest. Tomorrow the fight scene.” He pat Barry on the shoulder and went his own way.

“Kara, I don’t have my powers.”

She tried to use hers with no prevail. “I don’t have mine either.” She sighed. “This is Music Meister all over again.”

“Wait. He didn’t call us Kara and Barry. He called us Melissa and Grant. That must be our doppelgängers.”

She pointed her finger, perking up at the realization. “So if we can find out more about them, maybe we can find how to get home…” A woman approached the two, making Kara cut off her sentence.

“Make sure you get your costumes back to costumes before you head out.”

“And where should we do that?” He asked the woman. She laughed.

“Oh, right, your trailers. We had to move them during the shoot. They’re just past the food table, on the right.” She pointed.

“Thanks so much. Have a good night.” The two speed walked to the trailer marked “Grant Gustin” and “Melissa Benoist.”

“These must be it,” Kara stated.

Barry nodded. “Do you want to get changed and we can figure this out when we do whatever this us has to do.” He motioned to his suit.

“But I don’t want to leave my Supergirl outfit.”

He sighed. “Neither do I. But if that’s what they would do, we have to too.”

She nodded. “You’re right. Meet me back here when you’re done, okay? I’ll try to get into Melissa’s phone or laptop so we can do some research on who we are now.”

Kris stood outside the portal with Yixing and Tao at his flanks.

To any ordinary human, this place would like an old abandoned shack in the middle of nowhere and that’s what it was ninety-nine percent of the day. But to spiritual beings like the three of them, it gave off a pure, colorless light, the rotting door actually made of a thick marble with ancient script carved into its surface. This version of the portal was only available once a day, when the sun was beginning to set and its beams hit the cracks of the stone just right.

“We’re right here with you, Kris,” Yixing encouraged.

Taking a deep, unneeded breath, Kris stepped forward. This was just the first test in the trial. The portal – the stupid, inanimate door – had to decide that he was worthy to even try. That this trip had nothing malicious tied to it and that he was doing it for honorable reasons. Kris was sure that he would get through the barrier. What was more honorable than going after love?

Then why was he so nervous that the door wouldn’t open?

As far as he knew, there was never a time where one of his kind ventured into the other realm. They were all well versed in how it operated and what existed on the other side, but they never stepped foot over there. This was dangerous, unknown territory. He was going in blind. But he had to get to you.

Taking that final step, Kris held up his hand, placing his palm against the cold surface and keeping his mind trained on you.

At first, nothing happened. No movement, no sound, no sign of any kind.

Just as Kris was about to give up, the earth shook with a rumble and he watched in amazement as the marble door slipped away from view, revealing a black opening. What was beyond that, none of them had any idea.

“This is it,” Tao said, mostly likely to hype himself up. “First demons to travel into heaven. No big deal, right?”

Kris shook his head. “Just come on.”

Slowly, the three of them made their way towards the blinding white light and through the portal.

Out on the other side was just darkness. There was nothing. No trees, no people, no dirt. Just… nothing.

Turning around, Kris could still make out Yixing and Tao, but he couldn’t figure out what they were standing on or what was around them.

“Um,” Tao swallowed, “if this heaven, I want to go back to earth.”

“This isn’t the other side,” Yixing clarified. “This is just another test.”

“Orpheus had it easy,” Kris mumbled under his breath. Play a pretty song and don’t look back. That’s all he had to do. Then again, he couldn’t even manage the last part of the instructions.

Out of the darkness, a small dot of light, like a star in the night sky, appeared in the distance.

“There!” Tao pointed towards the light. “Maybe we should head for it?”

Yixing and Kris exchanged looks and shrugged. What else could they do?

They walked towards the light, but it never got any closer, never grew in size. Kris was getting frustrated, but he didn’t know what else to do. He stopped, a strange sound hitting his ears.

“What’s that?” Yixing asked, hearing it to.

The sound grew until Kris could identify it as a rumbling growl. The space beneath him was shaking violently.

“Please tell me it’s not what I think it is,” Tao whined.

Kris cursed under his breath. Sure enough, heading straight for them was the Protector of the Realms of the Dead: Cerberus. The building-sized, three-headed dog was running at them full speed, teeth bared and saliva flying everywhere as he snapped his multiple jaws.

“Run!” Tao screamed, taking off the opposite direction. Yixing and Kris were right on his heels.

As he tried to get away, a memory of you flashed in his mind.

The two of you were trying to coax one of the dogs back inside of the shelter but every time Kris took one step towards the thing, he’d snap at Kris, barely missing his chance to bite.

“You can’t be scared of him,” you teased, scratching the mongrel under his chin. “That makes them think you’re up to something, maybe even plotting something against them. Running away doesn’t do any good. You’ve got to show them some love. And let them know exactly what you want.”

Kris had brushed it off back then, resigning himself to be on cat duty instead. But now….

Skidding to a stop, Kris turned around, standing up straight and facing the dog head on. Besides, as a demon, he shouldn’t be terrified of the animal. Cerberus wasn’t exactly friendly towards anyone, but he was mutual, simply making sure that balance prevailed.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tao yelled. Kris was started to regret bringing him along. He’d forgotten that Tao was easily frightened.

Maybe this whole thing will brave him up a bit.

Cerberus stopped just a few feet away, growling down at Kris. Feeling like an idiot, Kris reached for the middle head, palm out, and waited. The other two heads were staring at Yixing and Tao. Kris motioned for them to do the same.

Once all three of them had their hands out stretched, the over grown dog actually laid down on his stomach, pushing the edges of his noses into their hands.

“I just need to find her,” Kris told the dog softly. “That’s all I want. And then I’ll leave.”

The light that was now behind them grew, shining brightly and illuminating the space around them to reveal a field of wildflowers. With one last yelp, Cerberus melted away, leaving the three of them just standing there out in the open.

“What the hell kind of test was that?” Tao scoffed, kicking at the nearest dandelion and sending the small seeds drifting through the air. If he was trying to be intimidating, it wasn’t working.

“Fear,” Yixing answered simply. “And, of course, he had to make sure we weren’t trying to do anything malicious by coming through here.”

“A cakewalk compared to what’s next,” Kris murmured. Shortly before the horizon was a small community. It couldn’t really be called a town or a city as there weren’t shops or vendors, only living quarters, but there were people milling about, laughing and chatting with each other. That’s where you would be. “Be careful,” Kris warned. “We can’t be discovered that we’re not one of them.”

“What will happen?” Tao asked cautiously.

“You don’t want to know,” Yixing replied.

They walked to the community, forced smiles plastered on their faces, nodding to everyone they made eye contact. Blending in.

This was the “Good Place”, heaven, the other side, whatever you wanted to call it. Everything here was beautiful and harmonious. The houses were made of organic materials and everything was in shades of browns, greens, and blues. Everyone was accommodating and kind.

“I don’t see her,” Yixing whispered.

“Just keep looking,” Kris ordered. “She has to be here somewhere.”

The three of them continued to maneuver around the large groups of people, keeping a sharp eye for anyone who might resemble you. There were a few close calls, Kris spotting someone with your hair color, or Yixing pointing out a similar profile. They all turned out to be false leads.

But he wouldn’t give up. He made it this far, there was no way–

Kris stopped in his tracks, Yixing and Tao running into his back.

There you were, sitting on a bench in the park by yourself and away from everyone else, just taking in the breeze. Kris couldn’t see your face entirely, but there was no mistake that it was you. Over his shoulder, he said, “Stay here. I don’t want to scare her.”

“Why would he scare?” Tao whispered.

Yixing cleared his throat. “Since she died traumatically, she won’t remember anything. It wouldn’t exactly keep the peace if she remembered how she died. This is also Kris’ last trial. To convince her to go back.”

Tao raised an eyebrow. “That’s supposed to be the last trial?”

“Yes. He has to convince her to come back with us. Not an easy feat. No one actually wants to leave here.”

“I have a friend who needs your help.” Kris decided to go with a sort of twisted version of the truth. “She’s… sick and you’re the only one that can make her better.”

“I can explain that when we see her.” Standing up, Kris held out his hand. “Will you come with me? We have to go to where she is. You can trust me.”

You stared at him for a good minute, not moving. Kris was already trying to come up with more excuses to get you to come with him but then you took his hand and stood to your feet.

Looking him with a titled head, you surprised him with your next question. “Do I already know you?”

“We’ve met before,” he answered honestly.

You nodded. “I thought so. You just seem so familiar.”

Unable to help it, Kris laced his fingers through yours to which you sent him a shocked expression, but didn’t yank your hand away. Damn, all he wanted was to pull you in close to him and kiss your lips. His self-control was wavering. They needed to get out here. Now.

When Yixing and Tao walked up to the two of you, you hid behind Kris, burying your face in the space between his side and arm.

You frowned. “Die again?”

“Tao!” Kris hissed through clenched teeth. What an idiot.

“Come on,” Yixing urged, shoving Tao in the direction of the car.

“Kris,” you called out in a strained voice. “What’s going on?” You were scared, nearly shaking in your astral form. Here, you were see-through, a ghost. Anyone passing by would see you and go off running, telling everyone who would listen that the shack was haunted by a beautiful ghost girl in white.

“Please, just come with us,” Kris begged. Yixing was right. They only had a limited amount of time. Spirits couldn’t walk the earth for long and he refused to lose you again. “I’ll tell you everything. I promise.”

Nodding, you let him lead you to the car, where he sat in the back, thankful that he was able to physically hold this version of you.

Yixing made it back to the mansion in record time and all of you tore through the house, not caring this time around if someone saw you.

Your body was still lying there peacefully on Kris’ bed, Midnight watching over you diligently. He meowed at the sight of everyone. Kris patted him lightly on the head.

“Good boy.”

At seeing your body there on the bed, you scrambled back.

Kris took your hands in his. “(y/n). Listen to me. You did die, but you weren’t meant to. We’ve brought you back so you could finish out your life.”

“This isn’t what you told me,” you said quietly, eyes constantly flickering over to the bed. “I want to go back.”

“You’ll go back again someday,” Kris reminded you. Of course you would. You were too pure and good to deserve the alternative. “But first you have to finish out your life here. Can I put you back? Please?”

To his amazement, you nodded without pausing. Scooping you up, Kris carried you over to your body and gently laid you down. Your spirit disappeared into your body and they all waited. For what felt like an eternity, nothing happened. Why couldn’t anything just happen right away?

Kris nearly doubled over when your eyes fluttered open. You took a big gasp of air, flinging up off the bed and into a sitting position.

“Kris!”

He was right by your side, wrapping his arms around you. “I’m right here, baby. I’m right here.”

“You came for me,” you cried, soaking his shirt. “You really came for me.”

“Of course I did,” he scoffed as he rubbed your back.

A slow clap interrupted the beautiful reunion. Everyone whirled to find Minseok leaning against the door frame.
