Shadow High OCs Bio 4: Velia Trafford

BIO: Raised by her aunt Doris and her husband, renowned marine biologist Dr. Trafford, Velia decided to take her own interest in the deep sea in a different direction. Having spent hours as a kid in her uncle’s lab sketching his most exotic specimens, she developed a talent for visual arts and a dark, otherworldly art style that was eventually noticed by Shadow High. She’s focusing in visual arts and continues to amaze her teachers and classmates with her speculative paintings and 3D-printed sculptures of the kind of nightmare-worthy sea life that lurks in the darkest depths of the ocean. She’s even added these ideas and motifs to her personal style (like her custom headband inspired by the lure of the anglerfish) so everybody knows she’s a force of darkness to be reckoned with. In spite of the unorthodox creative path she’s chosen, her aunt and uncle couldn’t be prouder of her.

OTHER:

-She’s 17 years old and from Delaware.

-Likes sci-fi, gaming, and loud rave music. Definitely has an emergency supply of glow sticks.

-She’s used to being called a nerd for her interest in marine biology and her tendency to stay indoors to draw or study, but she’s only recently begun to accept it and become proud of it. Revamping her look has definitely increased her confidence.

-The Storm Twins derisively nicknamed her “the creep from the deep”, which backfired as Velia actually likes the epithet and sometimes even uses it to refer to herself ironically.

-Recently she enrolled in an extra art chemistry class and joined the science club, with the aim of learning all she needs to know to create her own line of glow-in-the-dark paints. (She’s thinking about calling her brand “Lure”.)

-She’s not just passionate about the aesthetic of sea life, but their continued survival too. She spends her winter breaks doing art pieces for marine pollution awareness campaigns.

-Is good friends with Zooey Electra.

-She has a system where she treats herself to a new face piercing every time she gets an A on a test or project, and as a result has more piercings than almost everyone at Shadow High. It’s a great way to stay motivated, but she’s running out of areas to pierce…

-She and Coral Navarre (Rainbow High OC) are fans of each other’s work. Velia wants to be the chief set designer for Coral’s next ballet while Coral wants to design costumes based on Velia’s artworks.

A/N: I originally wrote this for @ savelockwoodnco on instagram's filler episode theme. But I'm a month too late... anyways this takes place after 'The Empty Grave' but there are no major spoilers for it. Originally I wrote it in german, but I translated it for the internet with the help of DeepL.

I'm not quite sure what to think about the fact that I can only really celebrate Halloween this year. In the past, the last day of October was just that - an ordinary day. For many years, October was the start of a stressful time, as the early darkness meant that even more ghosts appeared and caused trouble.

I can still vividly remember a Halloween night when I was still working at Jacobs. Together with my friends, we watched old scary films and ate so much sweets that our bellies would burst. I spent all the other nights of 31 October either at home or in a haunted house. After all, parties and good humour seemed to be reserved for the rich who could afford a good security system and didn't have to chase ghosts at night.

It was the first time I'd ever been in a costume - or at least I couldn't remember any other time. I was wearing brown trousers and had wrapped a top over them with different fabrics. Over the wrapped top I wore a loose-fitting corset made of fake leather. On my back I wore a quiver with fake arrows and I had made a real belt with Holly with lots of storage space. I had painted on fake freckles with a little make-up and braided my hair into a braid. My ears looked pointed thanks to plastic prosthetics. I wasn't really happy yet, but I guess I could only disguise myself as far as my resources would take me - I still looked too much like Lucy Carlyle and not like Eobyn Truewood Heroine of Thalore.

I smoothed out wrinkles in my costume as the stairs to my attic began to creak. I turned to the opening in the floor and saw Lockwood climbing the stairs in his costume.

"Hello, I was wondering if you could paint my face red? George was actually going to do it, but he's locked himself in his room." He was holding a make-up sponge and red face paint in his hand. On his head he wore a headband with little devil horns.

"Sure, but can't you do it yourself?"

"I've already tried that. It looked terrible." He laughed briefly.

So I gestured for him to sit on my bed (the only acceptable seating up here). I sat down next to him and turned to face him.

The colour was really pigmented, but I left a few streaks that I had to painstakingly touch up with the sponge. In the meantime, I was just as red as Lockwood - if not more. I was just getting incredibly warm in this room, in my costume - next to Lockwood.

But we were finished. There were still spots here and there that someone with more knowledge of make-up could perhaps have improved, but Lockwood was happy, so I was too.

We waited together in the kitchen over a cup of tea for Holly and George.

Holly's outfit was truly stunning. She wore a long, loose pastel green dress and fake pointy ears too. Her make-up matched the pastel colour palette she had chosen for her character. Her dark skin made the colours particularly vibrant.

Just before the driver arrived, George finally made an appearance. And his costume was many things.

He had painted his skin chalky white and dyed his hair black. In his mouth, from which (hopefully) fake blood was running, pointed fangs were visible and behind his glasses he had red eyes. His costume resembled the suit of a Victorian gentleman with a long cape and a few pieces of armour.

The three of us knew that George was no ordinary vampire. He was Lord Glethin, a nefarious vampire who had taken control of a country and was now spreading fear and terror with the undead. He was the main villain of our campaign and had spanked us mightily a few times already.

Holly broke the silence that prevailed shortly after his arrival with a round of applause, which I joined in with, as did Lockwood. He looked impressive.

A car horn signalled us to leave and we ran to the front door. I had stowed all my essentials in my belt bag, while Holly carried a fashionable handbag and Lockwood slung a rucksack on his back - I didn't really want to know what he was up to.

Just as we were out of the amazement again, the next surprise greeted us outside our door. In the faint light of dusk and the greenish glow of the ghost lamps, an Austin Healey saloon was parked outside 35 Portland Row. And no, I don't know anything about cars, I just understood George's mumbling.

The driver, an old man with white sideburns, greeted us and opened the door to our seats. Even then I was sure that this was going to be a night to remember.

Just random notes on it:

I did not mean for it to look so Venti inspired 💀

The colour palette was chosen from a random galaxy image I found on Google, so no, I did not have control over the colours it picked 💀

I did not look at venti once while I designed my sona’s look for the 7th time, I actually had multiple different references and the end result just came out that way

It’s not exactly all the details, but I’m lazy to add every single detail and a back profile lol

Fun fact: my genshin sona has had 7 redesigns. I’ve gone through three different visions too 💀 first it was cryo, than anemo, than hydro, and than back to anemo.

Another fun fact: my genshin sona likes bothering the Mondstadt bosses because why not. If Barbatos is going to sleep for who knows how long, I might as well go make "friends" with the other immortal beings 💀 Andrius is now forever stuck with me asking about the past and sitting there in that arena like a child waiting for story time.

Fun fact 3: outside of my activities bothering Dvalin and Andrius, I’d be part of the Adventurer’s guild cause why not :D

"Gil, how's this?"

"Gil, what do you think?"

Gilgamesh looked up from his camera, trying not to let it show how annoyed he was becoming with the models chosen for this shoot. It was a big one--a very coveted spread for one of the biggest lingerie brands out there.

"Yoo-hoo, Gil!"

If only the models weren't so grating.

Gil looked down at the camera again. Half of the shots weren't particularly usable, as far as he was concerned. They weren't bad photos exactly, but they were striking such unnatural poses. It was like they were posing for a boudoir shoot instead of actually trying to model the product.

"What do you think of this one?"

And one of them kept leaning over to give him cleavage shots. Which maybe the brand would like, but they just weren't his thing.

"Y'know what," Gil sighed, hoping he didn't sound fucking exhausted. He reached up to turn the fans off, only worsening the heat from all the lights they had on. "Why don't we take five, hm? I want to, uh, look at the lighting a little."

"Okay!" the two models he'd been trying to get shots of all morning giggled, bouncing and jiggling off the set and forgoing their robes completely.

Gil shook his head. They were for their comfort, sure, but if he had a choice, he would have preferred they be clothed in more than undergarments too. But apparently what he wanted wasn't on their mind.

"Maybe we should ask him for help getting out of these."

"Shush!--he'll hear you!"

The two continued to giggle all the way into the other room, designated as their dressing room. Their personal affects, the pieces, hair and makeup as well as a proper changing curtain were all in there. They had invited him to come in to see 'something' multiple times, and he had declined each one.

Gil looked towards the back of the room, barely able to spot a head of blonde hair trying to hide away between the rest of the lighting equipment by the window.

Thena hadn't said a word all day.

Not since the other two models had turned up, at least. It was going to be just them at first, but the agency had notified them both pretty last minute that they had two other models who could wear some of the colours they thought weren't the best for Thena's palette.

He had heard the other two talking about Thena--saying she was stuck up and bitchy and hard to work with. Evidently they didn't know her very well. He wouldn't say he was her best friend or anything, but he at least knew Thena well enough to know that she was just...shy.

She didn't like being around people in general, and two was enough for her to feel crowded and suffocated. She could come off as defensive, sure. But she was sweet, if you weren't in her face annoying her. Or talking about her 'behind her back' with every intention of her hearing you.

"Hey."

Thena looked up as he leaned on the gear table beside her, matching her body language as he folded his arms and crossed one leg over the other. "Hey."

Gil leaned closer to whisper, "I need a break from those two. Can we do your sets next?"

"You're the photographer."

He tilted his head to get a good look at her.

That was all it took for her to loosen her posture, "sorry."

He smiled; see?--sweet. "It's been a long morning."

Thena unfolded from around herself, the sleeves of her satin robe shimmering with her every move. She peeked over at him, "did you get some good shots?"

Gil pretended to think, tapping his chin. Thena pursed her lips as he did. "No."

She laughed, although she pressed her lips together so her colleagues wouldn't think fun was being had without them (and come running out to join). "None?"

Gil sighed, ruffling his hair, "they're all...I dunno. They're too...much. They're trying way too hard, y'know?"

"Hm," Thena sufficed to say with a slow nod of her head. "They were...excited to work with you."

"Me?" Thena gave him a look just for asking, but he didn't really know what it was supposed to mean. He shrugged, "well, if they really want to work with me, then they can hit a frickin' pose the way I ask, just once. That'd be a good start."

Thena smiled more naturally, even angling herself towards him slightly, "I would offer to talk to them, but I believe it would do more harm than good."

Gil risked a look behind them to make sure they weren't listening in on them or anything. With the coast clear, he bumped his shoulder gently against Thena's, "if it gets them to leave?--anything."

Thena suppressed a little laugh again, and his knees nearly buckled at the sound. He hadn't realised how much he was longing to hear it. "I doubt we could be so lucky."

"Maybe not," he mumbled, looking her over again. She was still ready to start her part of the shoot, having waited patiently all this while. He reached out to the bouncy curls that had 'escaped' the clip at the back of her head. "This is pretty."

Thena blinked, seeming caught off guard by the statement. Her hand floated up to her hair somewhat aimlessly, as if in nervous reflex. "Oh, they, uhm...thanks."

Gil grinned; he wished he'd brought the camera over with him, because this smile...this was what he wanted.

"Gil?"

Thena's frown reappeared, and Gil felt incensed by the banishment of her smile. She shrunk down again, "your adoring fans are calling you."

He sighed, rubbing his hand over his face. "Stay still--I don't think they've seen me yet."

Thena peeked over at him--god, those eyes were killer. "You would neglect your fanclub?"

"Where'd you go, handsome?"

He tapped the back of her hand with the back of his, "I'd much rather be here."

Thena's expression softened exponentially, and he resolved to find a way to get that on camera, one day.

The door to the dressing room closed again and the two let out a sigh. Gil ran his fingers through his hair again, "jesus."

Thena leaned off the table at last, pulling her shoulders back and rising to her full height, "shall we?"

He grinned, following her to the white screen and lights. That was his Thena. He moved to his camera naturally, watching as Thena padded into the set so silently. He adjusted his focus.

Thena let her robe slip off her shoulders slowly, revealing just the pale length of her back until there was just a hint of the lace edge of the panties she had been given.

Gil rushed to duck behind his camera as she turned back to him. He was a professional! At least he was supposed to be...

"Hey!" the other models poked their heads out, "no one told us-"

"Will you not interrupt?!" Thena snapped at them, folding her robe around herself as she glared at them. See?--shy.

"Ugh," the gave her the same look of disdain they had been all day. They turned to Gil, "we're-"

"Give me the room," he added to Thena's somewhat harsher statement. He frowned, "she didn't interrupt during your time."

The models sighed but retreated, probably ready to talk shit about him after his offense.

Thena looked at him, slowly unfurling her robe again, "careful, Gil. They're liable to complain about you if you're not sugarcoating your every word for them."

Gil shrugged one shoulder, leaning up from the tripod with his hands in his pockets, "let 'em. I'll let the agency know I don't like any of the photos I have of their sets."

Thena laughed again, and he snapped a photo at just the right time.

"Well," she sighed, much more comfortable now that it was just the two of them. She may have arrived in a floor length skirt and turtleneck, but she was a professional, and she had no sheepishness as she stood under the lights, "where do you want me?"

Gil swallowed, averting his eyes from the sparkle of the cream coloured satin on her skin. "Actually, get the robe again?"

Thena obeyed, letting it hang in the crooks of her elbows. "Hm?"

"Yeah," Gil ruffled his hair again-again. "It's part of the lineup, right?"

Thena nodded, "it's all a matching set, I think."

"Great, so, uh," he blew out a breath, trying to pull himself together just a little. "Do that...that thing again?"

Thena blinked at him.

"Sorry," he laughed. Why was he so nervous? "Leave it hanging like that. And just kind of...turn away from me a little."

Thena angled herself, accentuating the slope of her waist, the sharpness of her hip bones and the softer swell of her bust. She let the robe slip a little lower, revealing the same lace edge.

The lighting created tiny divets of shadows in the dimples of her tailbone.

Gil snapped the picture, "great! That's perfect!"

Thena let his bizarre transition from nervousness to enthusiasm slide. She tilted her head at him, a few of those curls dancing around her face, "what else?"

"Uhm," Gil tapped his chin for real. She turned around again and he moved back to the camera. "Let me...think."

Thena allowed it, pulling her robe on but not folding it closed. She grinned, "you're not feeling shy, Mister Photographer...?"

Shy?--no.

Flustered?--hell yes."

SILVA OMAR

Translated description: "Silva Omar's color attributes are red. The second attribute is achromatic, etc. Silva Omar's words contain many red color images. The main Silva Omar image is created from a combination of tones with red as the base color."

While personally, I can get behind the white, grey/silver colours, as well as the blue, for physical appearance, I believe red would be more suitable for what Silva feels internally (WRATH). The green could be a reference to the significant others she finds attractive.

Some of this is about Paul... some of it is his own words directed to his former loved ones. Though I have to ask; are they still loved ones when they no longer hold any of that old love for you back?

when a friend gets into a new fictional character. there is nothing more fun than seeing that initial curiosity, then the denial, and then the absolute spiral of fixation that overtakes a pal who has discovered a new blorbo 🙈💖 it's always a delight to wind them up when those feelings are fresh!!! try teasing your pals when they're in this phase, their reactions are adorable 😂

when you can see an artist's style change because they love a series/character/etc. so much. isn't it amazing to witness someone love a thing so much that it changes the way they create? 😭 sometimes it's really subtle, like changing the way they draw eyes or changing up their colour palette...and then other times it's a total transformation!! it's just awesome to see that inspiration happening in real time 🔥

when you find a person who has filled up an entire tag creating all kinds of fanworks for their beloved obscure or 'dead' fandom or character. fandoms are so powered by neurodivergency, and i love scrolling through a tag and seeing the same name pop up over and over, who were so overcome with love and interest and theories for their favourite thing they just couldn't hold it back!! 🙈💖 passion is something which should always be celebrated, right?

when people wear reminders of their favourite characters!! clothes, jewellery, even keeping a little plush with them at all times...it's precious, and such a great thing for your mental health 🥰 i'm definitely guilty of doing things like painting my nails in colours inspired by my favourite character's colour schemes, and it's an awesome mood-booster;;;

when you can see how much someone loves their own work!! whether it's OCs, art, fic, vids, it's just so pleasant to see a break in the self-deprecation and proliferation of cringe culture and find people who are delighting in what they make 🙏💖 just having a grand ol' time with their art, no matter what it is!! to those of you reading this, i hope you can reach that point where you're loving what you're creating 💖

She loves skincare and self care routines and loves to show people the importance of a good routine. Though she herself only uses light makeup practically only owns a mascara, a bunch of lipbalms and her fave gloss and a small palette her friend bought her for her birthday.

She is a hard worker and after buying her parent's house made her first bucket list renovation --- Her own greenhouse! She's very proud pf her little paradise and always gets compliments from how perfect her own garden is.

She isn't a health nut but she loves to visit the gym sessions 2-3 times a week --- she particularly likes , swimming, yoga and rock climbing.

She is a hot headed sim and sometimes can get abit spicy for her attitude which sometimes is taken in previous relationships she had as mistaken jealousy.

She's a loyal sim to friends and family and has not ever cheated on her other relationships -- but sadly has been cheated on or abandoned cause her ex's thought the grass was greener on the other side. Her last relationship was when she just turned 17 and she found her ex with her now ex friend. Last she heard they both moved to Foxbury Campus.

She has a few degrees under her belt too though she got her degrees by being one of the few of a large chosen group to partake in Foxbury and Brichester's joint online program. She excelled really well. Even when she worked 4 days a week as a florist during the day and at night as a mixologist at a family friend's lounge bar known as Orchid A Go Go.

Rundown of how she got chosen? She was a crew florist member of the decor department for the show, and seemingly apparently one of the producers liked her and recommended her to the casting for potentials director where Jemima was introduced to them and after the finalizing of the contract and a quick simple mini introduction interview at her house as well as a photoshoot the following evening and is now waiting for the final call announcements. If she's not chosen she'll go back to working on set. And only her parent's have met Orange Bailey yet but she's willing to give it a shot for love

Story: 8/10

Pfiou that was something. I haven’t read a manga with so many chapters in a while so I think I’ll have a lot to say on this one. First of all, I feel like the summary of the story does not explain the entire plot and that it is misleading in a way. I was expecting a story about a boy who has met his all-time favorite idol, but it turns out that this idol is not all bright and pretty and, basically, just that. However, it turned out that Nagi Aoe, the idol, was not even a recurrent character in the story. She’s important for the plot, yes, but she doesn't show up much and other characters easily take center stage in the manga. I was also very disappointed in the first 20 chapters and I almost dropped the manga because minispoiler alert: in 20 chapters the MC fucked/kissed all the female character introduced at least once. I really thought it was some kind of fanservice and I was dealing with some kind of silly harem manga hidden under the cover of a "deeply depressing manga". But the scenes were meaningful to the story, I suppose. It also stops far later in the story and there are fewer scenes like that. Even though there was some things I didn't really appreciate in the story, I think every struggle and sensitive issues were well presented. I wouldn’t say that it was well developed thought.

Art: 9/10

Lovely. Very lovely. Everything looked great. Especially the colour pages and the volume covers. I love the color palette chosen by the artist.

The only thing missing from a 10/10 is that sometimes some panels were full of bubble talk. Like FULL of them. And I know it was probably to accentuate the craziness of the character, but I'm not going to lie I just skipped those pages...

Cast: 6/10

Come to think of it, the main character wasn't so interesting. His character could be resumed to a boy getting sexually and mentally abused by every woman around him. The female characters of this manga were either very annoying or non-existent to the story. I hated every pages with Chako in it (fuck her I swear), and the mother, Yuko, scared me. I have the impression that the teacher was the only well-written character. While what she did to Reiji was very wrong, the entire relationship was very well depicted as toxic. It shows that no matter the context, the student is always the victim in a teacher-student relationship. Because the teacher is older and have more power over the student so they can manipulate them very easily.

Enjoyment: 6/10

I had planned to give an 8/10 to this manga because I enjoyed my reading session. But I just had a nap and the whole thing was repeating itself in my head while I was sleeping. On top of the fact that I'm really sick today, I blame this manga for the atrocious headache I'm having right now. It doesn't make sense and the manga isn't to blame for my disease, but I don't care, I need somebody to blame hehe.

Wingate / Iris

Mysterious thief and equally mysterious dancer. Colours look lovely together, and Wingate being a "family" man while Iris is a teacher to many students, seems like a good match. Though Wingate can be a bit youthful, Iris can help him out with her street smarts.

Barrad / Dorothea - "Barrathea"

Runaway nobles turned merchants...? Yes! These two are fun and popular among their peers and they would bring so much life to a gathering! Plus Barrad is the kind of guy who wants to hire a lot of people for his future business, and Dorothea also ends up hiring plenty for her own business, so along with the help of their friend Durand, they can be the owners of a influential merchant company. as well as be seafaring merchants.

Levan / Brigitte - "Levitte"

The shy and anxious kid pairing, but they are there to support each other! Levan loves to talk about his interests, and Brigitte always does her best in things. If Brigitte was one of the people who willingly wants to listen to Levan's passions, I think that'd be adorable. I'm sure she was a bit overwhelmed at first though, but the friendship and future relationship can blossom!

Lionel / Merrit

The handsome and noble knight ready to lay down his life for his fair princess. These two are a story book couple in both appearance and job. They are absolutely precious together, and though I do headcanon Lionel as asexual, I know Merrit would respect that from her partner. I think she'd rather be the person who adopts every stray cat she finds that needs a home anyway!

Lolo / Molrusso

Lolo, the guardian of the mountains and Molrusso, the youthful cleric who loves her storybooks! These two look adorable together based on colour palettes and when Lolo becomes more comfortable being around people again, I think he would easily be friends with Molrusso. She can be a bit scatterbrained, but she's more of a "people person" than Lolo, they can support each other's weaknesses. Plus after Lolo's story, he could really use that good friend in someone like Molrusso.

Miles / Noelle

The up-and-coming Knight Ardante with the lost in fantasy student scholar! Miles and Noelle are also both from the original work, so seeing them together is kinda cute! Noelle being interested in old fairytales makes the idea of a knight perfect for her!

Oskha / Sofia - "Sofiano"

A long time shipping of mine! I've adored it for 3.5 years! Though, they don't look as if they have all that much in common, they are a blue-red, a fire-ice, Wealth pairing. Sofia's an artist and scholar, Oskha is a prodigy child who knew how to predict rains, draw maps, and more, etc. They'd be a powerful and intelligent couple! He just needs to get his act together. Oskha was never a villain right from the start, what if these two met when they were younger and developed a friendship that became more if they met again many years later? I have story ideas I want to write for this.

Bargello / Shelby - "Barshel"

The future Don of the mafia with the newest recruit in the Bargello Family. Shelby met Bargello by chance when his Family were planning to make their mark on the world! Having tied with her duties as the "Chosen One", she grew closer with Bargello in time, and now they are here to help out Valore and the late the entire continent!

Leon / Elletrix

This is not a romantic shipping... I'm currently more interested in them as platonic partners. Leon and Elletrix are already clearly good friends in the game, but perhaps they could have some cool seafarer partnership one day? I'm sure Leon would want to support the woman who helped him get a better look on life. And I'm sure that Elletrix likes to keep him around just to make sure he's not doing anything she wouldn't approve of. Plus since Avery, one of Elletrix's subordinates, canonly dislikes Leon a lot and believes he "can't compete with Leon", I can imagine that they are close enough to almost appear as a relationship to those who don't know about their close platonic partnership. Ex-pirate being best friends with the lord of Grandport? Yes!

Animation Practice - Week 8

This week, we were introduced to an exciting new project where we will be working with the company 9Trees, to make a 30-40 second animation to promote their business. This work will be done in groups and can be aimed towards the individual or businesses. To start, each member of our group made a pitch, which we then submitted to 9Trees. They would choose from this brief, and whoever was chosen would “lead” the project.

They gave us a list of scenarios that we could take inspiration from. The one I felt was most interesting was one where someone sees an advertisement for 9Trees, tells a friend and then gets involved, looking into what they can do as an individual. Before starting to come up with a storyline, I decided to look more into the visuals. I knew I wanted to create a more editorial style that looked vector-based, with no or at least very minimal line work. This isn’t a style I’m used to working with, so I found looking at other styles of work helped me to visualise what features I wanted to include. From here, this inspired my storyline as the visuals and the way I wanted to animate my video, and it was time to work on the synopsis (which would in turn, help with my storyboard).

Synopsis: The video opens with a view from inside a shop, where posters are taped up on the windows. The character walks past, and a 9Trees poster catches their attention. They stop to look at it, pull out their phone, and open the 9Trees website. The character looks at the website for a while, and the scene changes from them in the street, to them on the train. Eventually, they put their phone down and looked out the window. At home, the character opens their laptop and begins to type an email. They are sending it to 9Trees, asking if they can help the character plant some trees on their land. We see the characters land, and it then fades into the next scene where they are planting a tree with the help of someone from 9Trees. The last scene features the logo plus a short message about getting in touch.

After my synopsis was at a stage I thought sounded clear and concise, I moved on to storyboarding. I did this entire process using Photoshop, as I find it easier to move around different shots and experiment with what works. I worked very loosely to start so that I could get the base of what happened. I then moved on to making it more readable, especially as this was going to a client for reference, rather than something that only I would be referring back to. This helped me familiarise myself with working in the style, and to help myself more, I drew my character in a basic A-pose and began experimenting with colour schemes. I wanted to take inspiration from the 9Trees brand, but also make it more vibrant and engaging. I used Adobe Colour to put my colour scheme in a palette form with the hex codes written on it.

After experimenting with colour schemes, I used this to try colouring my storyboard. Here, I played around with different background colours. Looking back after submitting this pitch, I think I could've improved the backgrounds by thinking of the environment more, but there was not a lot of time to create this pitch so my main focus was getting the requirements done (and a coloured storyboard was not part of these requirements). I also made a concept art piece based off of the storyboard, as well as an animatic to try and test out timings and flow (again, I later noticed changes that I feel I should've made, such as holding some shots for longer so the audience has time to digest it.

If there was more time, I would have made the pitch more detailed, with things such as a character turnaround, including my mood board and thought process, as well as looking into background design and sound.

CHOSEN TOPIC -> RECORD ALBUM COVER

I decided to pick a record album cover, as ever since the M&M assignment from last semester, I wanted to have another attempt at an album cover design, but this time I chose a different medium, and in this case, I used Photoshop. I am always so intrigued by the art of album covers, and I appreciate the amount of effort the musician and designer put into the art of an album cover to ensure that the album is well represented to audiences.

Creative Concept

One of my favourite artists of all time is L.A. Tyler, the Creator, and even though his artwork for the last five albums has been outstanding in terms of quality and visuals, his cover designs for his first two albums (Bastard and Goblin) are less than superb. So, I decided to take on the role of recreating Tyler's first album's cover. My main challenge was sticking to a monochrome colour palette with a hint of red to take a nod to the original album cover, which is included above. My secondary constraint was ensuring that I eluded to the story within Bastard without making the design look outlandish and keeping in mind how album cover designs can influence the sales of records.

Description

Bastard is a mixtape by American rapper and producer Tyler, the Creator. Released in 2009, it serves as Tyler's debut solo project and showcases his unique style, blending elements of hip-hop, alternative rap, and dark, introspective lyrics. The mixtape gained attention for its raw and experimental sound, setting the stage for Tyler's future success with Odd Future (Tyler's friend group made up of other rappers, graphic designers, and skateboarders) and his solo career. Tyler, the Creator produced the entire "Bastard" mixtape himself at the young age of 19, demonstrating not only his skills as a rapper but also his talent as a producer. This DIY approach to his music production has been a consistent aspect of Tyler's artistic identity throughout his career.

Bastard is well known for its grunge-like production with tones of darkness in its lyrics and production so I really wanted to capture those characteristics in my redesign. When it comes to my roughs for graphic design I tend to find it quite difficult to really articulate my final vision as my process is changed quite a ton from when I plan my roughs to when I export the final JPG whereas when it comes to illustration I need complex roughs to lay a firm foundation or else I struggle to even begin. This could just because of the amount of experience I have between design and illustration but its a hurdle I must overcome. However, thankfully I will say I am quite skilled in photoshop so tackling this project was a nice refresher after the winter break and I was able to learn some new techniques that enhance my work such as colour overlay and dealing with adjustment layers. Layering multiple images resulted in the texture in the final result and effects such as grain, and roughen to portray the scuffed-like condition of the album. The album heavily contains themes of religion so it felt right to include an image of heaven while Tyler on the left wearing a ski mask with a upside-down cross is there to show a contrast of the rebellious influence Tyler has on the record. I wanted to keep type simple yet unique so I went with a sans serif typeface for the body text and a more decorative yet striking typeface for the title and I adjusted the kerning to increase readability. The graphics on the bottom are all made by me and even though I could've just grabbed them on google I figured I might as well have more pen tool practise. Overall I'm beyond pleased with how this turned out and I plan on recreating other album designs from Tyler, the Creator and I believe I was able to reach my objective in this week's illo.
