More on the Companion Rauru idea:
After Link reaches the surface, Rauru flies ahead a bit, towards the castle. I dont believe link learns he was a king until obtaining the first memory, so he has no context for the strange melancholy that passes over Rauru as he stares up at the castle. "This is what's become of Hyrule?"
This attitude persists as we proceed to lookout landing, and the remains of castle town. As it becomes all to apparent that the fall of his kingdom was nothing new. Zelda had never mentioned the calamity, after all. He had told her not to disclose the future.
I imagine you could get a fun bit of dialogue from Rauru by targeting a character and clicking a different button to get his opinion on them. Perhaps a mini animation similar to midna or fi popping out.
After obtaining the first memory- Link looks back to Rauru curiously. Rauru admits that yes, he was the king- he simply didn't think it right to introduce himself as such, so as not to overwhelm link. That or some kind of "modesty is a virtue" sentiment. That's our first hint he hasn't been entirely honest.
He could alsopressure link to visit shrines every now and then- and do the opposite for the Depths. He cites his reasoning as the former being necessary for regaining strength, vs the latter undoing that.
Assuming this AU doesn't snub the sheikah, it would also be very interesting to see their tech, remark how similar it is to the Zonai tech, and wonder how they learned to not only seal Calamity Ganon, but do so in a way that challenged his own sealing magic. Perhaps even make some off comments "understanding" why the king of hyrule who banished them was so scared of their power.
I imagine he'd be a good barrier to exploring certain areas within the depths- hed want you to stay away from the spirit temple and graveyard, for one thing- until there's a reason you're forced to visit. Perhaps he might even want you to avoid the Gordonia area... seeing as how it appears to be a goron town covered in Zonai mining equipment, theres probably secrets he doesnt want to share.
On another note he'd definitely have very suspicious dialog about the Gerudo. Old prejudices don't die easy, and it'd provide more hints that the story's conflict isnt as black and white as it appears.
Furthermore- he'd staunchly disagree with the theme clued into by the horned statue- that for light there must be darkness. Light is "good," after all. He's good. He's right. His only mistake was not treating Ganondorf like the threat he was.
Perhaps even give us some dialogue where Ganondorf recognizes the arm and asks Link if Rauru can hear them. Mention how he took pleasure in destroying Hyrule through his proxy, and taunt Rauru for not taking Zelda seriously despite her being able to fend off that proxy for so long.
Depending on how well the lore could be developed, this in general could be a great source of exposition.

Nintendo Switch Online: Every NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64, Sega Genesis, And GBA Game
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/nintendo-switch-online-every-nes-snes-game-boy-n64-sega-genesis-and-gba-game/
Nintendo Switch Online: Every NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64, Sega Genesis, And GBA Game
Tumblr media
Nintendo has been slowly beefing up its library of games available to Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack subscribers.
What began as a library of just 20 NES games has grown to include dozens more. Plus, Nintendo has since introduced SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, and even Sega Genesis games, giving players a chance to play some fan-favorite classics and some deep cuts, too. It’s hard to predict when new games might arrive as the company has maintained a somewhat inconsistent cadence in doing so, but that’s okay because this list is all you need.
As Nintendo adds new titles, we’ll be sure to update this list to include them. If you’re looking for something specific, use this story’s Table of Contents to jump to the different consoles quickly. Here’s every NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64, Genesis, and GBA game added to Nintendo Switch Online.

Vent about horrible ass shit. The Bad stuff in the 'samer' segment of Svenska nyheter. Edit: Might report that stuff to the Mediamyndigheten.
Disclaimer: I am not Sami. I am a Swede and I live in the southern third of Sweden and not near Sapmi. I am not up to date on and don't often come in contact with news regarding Sami issues in my day to day. You can seek a Sami perspective on this thing I am reacting to if it is published online. (If there is something in Swedish that you want me to translate into English on this topic, you can contact me.)
what the fuck. Okay so, uh, um. I really shouldn't be comparing things. Like, uh, watch two news satire programs. One is the John Oliver last week tonight thing, cuz American politics also affects international politics, and he takes up some international topics at times too. Then I watch the Swedish news satire program, "Svenska nyheter" (literally meaning Swedish news) and... This is horrible in comparison, honestly. It just punches down so much. Like, my god I was just shocked but the segment about Sami, I watched last week's episode cuz I missed it, and like, man, those are some fucking tasteless jokes. I... God. I want to both make a list of all the questionable jokes in there and why but I can't bring myself to watch that thing again. Like, fuck man. ...I shouldn't have expected a piece like the main story of LWT on that show, I know. The interview segments and tasteless jokes in the normal segments should have clued me into how the show would handle a story about hate crimes against our indigenous people. I'm just so disappointed though. They had some good arguments, and arguments that were not just one sided, but they totally undercut all of that with the other comedy shit they did. They did several jokes including/about a pejorative, when they had lines and a clip about how using that word is bad. They made fun of indigenous land rights and those vs infrastructure meant to combat the impact of climate change (a complicated issue). Compared the situation to Israel and Palestine, (which is maybe okay in some ways, because both are colonialism in modern times but FUCK, isn't that like, so disrespectful to both things being compared here???). He also belittled an indigenous person commenting on the complicated question of people who are outside a sameby and the difference between a sameby's rights and how a sameby's economic interest could come into conflict with other indigenous issues and the reality of the way of living of indigenous people outside a sameby. Also, I really didn't like the fucking thing they did with Ystad??? Why would they ask Ystad and do an interview segment there??? It's so far for Sapmi?? They like framed the whole indigenous land rights movement as an inherently destructive thing with that??? An us vs them narrative?? God, like, what the fuck?? People are fucking being put through hate crimes and you do a segment like that???

I’m gonna say something controversial. Two things really.
I loved Game of Thrones (show), yes including the later seasons. They obviously had their faults and felt out of touch because they weren’t grounded in source material. But I’ve rewatched the show so many times, I don’t think they are as far off base as everyone claims.
Now for the hard bit: I’m reading the books and I like the show better. The show tracks pretty closely with the book but of course the show took some liberties and made adjustments where necessary or just convenient. And for the most part, I like the show’s choices better. As an example: Battle of Blackwater. In the books, it’s more “realistic” for what a naval engagement would pan out to be. A bunch of ships from both sides do a lot of damage to one another and wildfire is loaded into a few ships and slowly takes over the bay. In the show, we see just one lannister ship sail out to meet the assailants and it’s loaded with wildfire and blows Stannis’ navy to smithereens, giving King’s Landing a solid early lead. I liked that move better, it was a better plan and it did what the show runner’s wanted, without branching disingenuously from the source material.
I also enjoy the show’s choice to lift the curtain slightly more. The books are sneakier, with the chapters not necessarily progressing at equal timing. Two sequential chapters may overlap in time, while the third jumps ahead and some news has spread of the last chapter’s events, which is just author convenience for concealing the meddlings and plot twists. In the show, the same thing happens but we see just a HARE more to keep us clued in and help us see things coming.
And of course, I am just a visual person by nature. I think if I had read the books first, I’d have quit because I could not keep names straight for a cast this large. Having watched the show, I know these names and can place a face them without getting lost.
My last critique of book vs show is that show is much, much better about world building. Again, I know it’s because I can see it. But the books really don’t have a consistent feel of fantasy to them. Half the chapters are medieval political drama and the others are fantasy. The show bridges that gap and keeps a more consistent tone, and calls out the magic to be that it IS shocking and it IS wondrous, it’s not baked in to daily lives beyond tales of grumpkins. But the show paints a landscape that when the magic starts to take a more center stage, it fits into the rest of the world whereas the books do not do that as well.
Anyway I’m enjoying the books all the same, just sharing some thoughts.

one of the major things you gotta realize about superfly when it comes to his vision of his father is that he...does not actually seem to remember much about him. which makes perfect sense because he was a BABY when baxter unfortunately died. i think the hint of this being the case that sorta clued me into this is the whole 'sludge vs ooze' exchange he has w/ the turtles when he meets em. he referred to the mutagen as 'sludge' while they said 'ooze' & he's like 'ooh, i like that!' meanwhile baxter himself referred to it as ooze. so, how i see it, it's a sign that like yeah superfly might subconsciously remember some things from the short time he spent with his dad but he otherwise doesn't remember.
i think the biggest thing tho is comparing the prologue scene in MM versus superfly's retelling of it later in the film. notably, there are two major differences about it: first off, in superfly's version of events, baxter's a lot warmer towards him, whereas in the prologue he's not nearly as warm ( btw that isn't to say he's cold, because he isn't !! i mean the guy refers to SF affectionately as 'little one,' calls himself his dad, gives him a crib w/ a lil blankie...the guy clearly adored SF in his own way. i'm just pointing out that all of the more cuddlier moments between the two happen specifically in superfly's version of events ).
secondly, SF's flashback shows the explosion that killed baxter but not the fact that SF landed on the canisters that wound up prompting the TCRI guy to shoot at him, thus causing them to explode. like, we see the part where baxter uses his own body to shield him but that's it. & while this could easily be the film speeding things along, i wouldn't be surprised if superfly just like...simply didnt comprehend that he inadvertently caused that. especially because as far as he's concerned, TCRI maliciously murdered baxter ( & this ofc isn't putting the blame on SF he was a frightened baby trying to defend him & his dad fuckngi of COURSE not jfc nor take the blame off of TCRI bc theyre no less responsible for what happened -- but SF seems to think they did it on purpose. meanwhile, it was more just the result of pure recklessness; they wanted both baxter & SF alive ).
so like basically the point im getting at here is that superfly's perspective is prrreeetty skewed both as a result of being too young to remember it accurately and also being traumatized witnessing such a horrible thing when he was an actual baby. it especially seems like he sugarcoats & hypes up his dad's memory as a result when, truthfully, he barely even got to know the guy. & considering that baxter's sorta the catalyst for SF's eventual violence & hatred, it's honestly really interesting to think that he's doing it based off of a perception skewed by trauma. that the catalyst for his actions isn't even based in objective truth.

i wanna talk books so I made a meme
@doorsclosingslowly here’s the answers to your questions :)
6. If you read in more than one language, is there a difference between the experience of reading in your native language(s) and reading in other languages?
Virginia Woolf has a great quote in A Room of One’s Own where she says that women writers need to develop their own “sentence” and that this can only be developed through creating a tradition of female writing. She says that while reading male writers is pleasurable, it isn’t useful for the female writer, that she can’t learn from the way men write. Their “sentence” isn’t suitable for female writing. I’m.... unsure of how much I agree with her on this but I find the theory useful for describing how I approach literature in Spanish vs English.
Especially in terms of language, not so much in regards to narrative or worldbuilding or even themes, I find Spanish to be pleasurable but not useful. I very rarely find myself reading something in Spanish and thinking “ooooh, I wish I could do that! I want to steal that! How did they come up with this?” The “sentence” for writing in Spanish isn’t one I recognize or want to imitate... except maybe for VERY few exceptions like Carlos Fuentes and Borges. Whereas I can spend a lot of time reading English un-selfconsciously and then suddenly be struck by a turn of phrase that I must somehow or other make my own. That almost never happens to me when reading Spanish.
9. Fiction or non-fiction or both? In what ratio? Where do you draw the line between the two?
Oh god, this is embarassing. Erm... fiction to a fault. On 2020 and 2019 I did try to make a concerted effort to read more nonfiction, ESPECIALLY more popular science books. I still kind of childishly consider myself to not be “smart like that” and that science isn’t for me, because I don’t understand it. I used to think science fiction wasn’t for me, for similar reasons. When I do read nonfiction it tends to be history and literary criticism.
I’m finishing my degree on English literature and though I had a period of hating hard on literary criticism, I think it was mostly me rebelling against the French brand of it. I HAVE to admit I love reading new historicism, especially now that I’m working on my dissertation and I had to read a lot on Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre.
Hopefully 2021 will be the year I read a bit more science.
11. The worst book hangover you’ve ever had
Augh... I remember two in recent years. Let me see... in 2017 I finished the last book in the Realm of the Elderlings. I had read the first book in the series around maybe the mid 2000s. I devoured it in a single weekend, still hungry for more of the story. I did not have access to the rest of the trilogy for a couple of years after, but as soon as I got them I read them as fast as I could. I remember reading those books during class, pretending to pay attention to a lecture on Linguistics but actually fully engrossed in Robin Hobb’s world.
It’s a world that was with me for more than 10 years. Characters that I knew intimately from multiple re-readings for more than 10 years. My dissertationg is about the first trilogy for crying out loud! I hadn’t wanted to read the last trilogy and the last book on the trilogy because I didn’t want that connection to end. But finally I gave in...
It was a book hangover because I was reading late at night when I realized, halfway through the book, a character I loved deeply was probably going to die and I just HAD to know, I HAD to be sure. So I read through the night going from disbelief to anger, to grief, to grim acceptance. I wasn’t able to put down the book until 11 am the next day, by which point I was openly sobbing and would have thrown the book across the room except I think I was reading in my computer.
The second book hangover I remember was less because of sprinting through the book and more because of the circumstances. Last December I had decided to finish as many books I could in hopes of reaching my Good Reads goal (which I didn’’t) and I was going through His Dark Materials pretty quickly when on the 25th I got the news that my grandmother died. I wasn’t able to go see her at the hospital or at a funeral, or even go see my dad and uncles because she had died of covid-19 and the situation was still pretty dire in the city.
Then Philip Pullman decided to be an absolute asshole to me and the characters in his book arrived to the Land of the Dead. Being an atheist fantasy series and me having just recently come to terms with the fact that I’m not even agnostic... it was very tough to go through Pullman’s exploration of mortality and the importance of life on Earth. I agreed completely that materiality and the here-and-now far outweigh any contemplations of an afterlife... but my grandmother had died very suddenly.... she had still been a pretty strong old lady before she contracted covid... I had spoken to her a couple of days before and she was still strong enough to bitch about litter getting inside her room...
I finished The Amber Spyglass in a rush as well and somehow it got mixed with my mourning process and my anger at myself for having taken my grandmother’s life for granted... for not having cherished the materiality of her existence when I had the chance... I hadn’t finished writing my dissertation’s first draft yet and there were some heavy issues going on in my household.... I was exhausted from having to survive the year and I think I still am... and it all mixed up with the bittersweet ending of Pullman’s His Dark Materials and the inevitability of loss... all I remember from between the 25th and the 31st of December 2020 was exhaustedly reheating Christmas food, trying to write, and slogging through The Amber Spyglass... it feels like it was a week-long literary hangover...
14. The book that, in hindsight, really should have clued you in to the fact that you’re _________ (queer/in love/doomed to be an academic/etc)
So this is slightly NSFW but I should have known, and stopped being such a snob about it, that I had WAY MORE in common with the furries than I cared to admit given that my first impression of Smaug the Golden when reading The Hobbit at the tender age of 8 was “wow! he’s dreamy!” *facepalm *(also betraying a worrying tendency to crushing on irredeemable assholes and other miscellaneous villains...) I have accepted my status as a weird monsterfucker AND a weird alienfucker. Inhuman anatomy makes me hot, and I should have known it from DAY ONE!
23. The book you expected to hate, didn’t, and then got angry about not hating
The Hunger Games, which I’m STILL salty about and will probably remain salty about for the rest of my life.
I hateread it because a friend told me about how he hated it, given his bitter ex loved it and though I agree with all his criticisms and have a bunch of my own... I still cannot stop finding stupid Katniss profoundly likeable! CURSES! A pox upon your house Suzanne Collins! I still think your dystopia is a cowardly, white-lady-who-has-never-feared-state-violence dystopia, I still think your love triangle was absolutely unnecessary and I still think you tried to cop out of admitting you (and your character) like pretty dresses by making the pretty dresses compulsory. Be brave! Don’t give me this “I’m not like other girls” bullshit! Be brave! Make your violent spectacle reality show as a criticism of the USA’s consumerism and callousness a voluntary thing! Don’t wash your heroine’s hands clean of the sin of wanting fame and fortune and survival at all costs!
But... fuck... I... still like Katniss... I’m glad little girls in 2008 got a heroine who kicked ass, looked good and wasn’t a perfectly strong and powerful person all the time. I’m glad they got competence and vulnerability... Fuck my life...
31. Bonus question: rec me something!
This is hard... since I get the feeling we have very different tastes in reading material but... If you haven’t heard of the Vampire: The Masquerade roleplaying game (or even if you have) take a crack at the Baali Clanbook. Even if you don’t understand the game mechanics I think you’ll enjoy the history portion because it’s about a clan of devil-worshipping vampires who do their devil worshipping through implanting evil insects on people... and I suspect it might be up your alley...

Trading Mistakes: How Yang’s Missteps Became Adam’s
I could gush about bees vs Adam all damn day, in fact, I have done that on more than one occasion. This time, though, I wanted to make a short(ish) post just to appreciate the contrast between their encounters.
The first time? Adam’s clearly in control; towering over Blake and ready when he’s clued in on Yang’s arrival. He knows Yang’s been fighting from the dorms, and has enough energy saved up (from both his fights in the courtyard and with Blake) to cut through what’s left of Yang’s aura and sever her arm. Most importantly, he uses Yang’s emotional connection to Blake, and her acting upon it to take her down before she can even land a hit.
When the rematch begins, there’s an almost parallel set of events. Blake becomes aware of Yang’s arrival, and Yang attempts to get a preemptive hit on Adam. However, it works on this occasion, partly because she begins the attack out of line of sight and the fact that Blake doesn’t do anything to draw Adam’s attention away from her; it’s the sound of the bike that actually makes him look, and by that point it’s too late to avoid or counter the hit. He’s already on the back foot. Then, having assumed the fight would be just as predictable and easy as Beacon, he jumps straight to using his semblance as a solution, just like a younger Yang would. Also, he lets his emotions get the better of him. The sheer frustration at Blake’s close connection to Yang boils over into a recklessness far beyond even our favourite blonde’s prior mistakes, expending aura and taking hits he otherwise wouldn’t have. And, of course, it all culminates in Yang using her semblance in tandem with the prosthetic he was responsible for to stop a blind rush on an opponent who could easily see it coming. Just like Adam did the first time.
Huh. Funny how these things work out. Naturally, the parallels don’t happen back-to-back in the latter fight since they’re on even footing for a moment, but it’s interesting how the essence of one scene was distilled down and drawn from for a fight 3 volumes later.

[Where My Twin Watches]: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 41
Last time: Armstrong the Great got a promotion, Beardless grew a beard, and Teacher got a surprise surgery. Onwards!
The Mining Crew is still going through the tunnels towards Fort Briggs, it looks like Al hasn’t caught up to them yet. Whoops, Winry just tripped over a box of - gah, dynamite!
[Yoki]: “Nah, these are all sopping wet. Relax, they wouldn’t blow up even if we wanted them to.”
Wow. Yoki being the Voice of Reason. Times sure have changed.
Scar snaps at them to keep moving, “they could already be after us.” Yeah, but if you dwadle long enough then Al can catch up! So please May, keep up with the freakouts!
Back in Baschool, the storm’s passed so Sideburns is back to plotting against Kimblee. Aw, come on. I get shooting Kimblee from the get go, but why do you have to kill his other two guys (I’m assuming Chimeras like Toad and Boar). Keep them alive, they can join Al’s Chimera Army! Ed is understandably shaken at these KOS orders being thrown about.
Episode 41 - “The Abyss”
See, I hear “The Abyss” and I immediately think about the staring quote. Is Sideburns going to get a last-minute change of mind about killing all three, decide to be better than Kimblee? Not like that’s a high bar to clear, but still.
Ed’s trying to argue for taking Kimblee alive for questioning, Sideburns says he’ll never talk. As for his men? Maybe they’re being forced to serve Kimblee, but Sideburns thinks it’s too big a risk to bet on that. First Law of Briggs: The Careless are the first to die.
[Sideburns]: “We aren’t going to be careless. We’re killing Kimblee. And the two men with him.”
Walking down the hallway, Sideburns and the two Briggs soldiers talk about how Ed’s chosen the more difficult path of trying to keep his enemies alive. Their attitude seems to be “Admirable, but foolish.” Come on Ed, prove them wrong!
Back with the Mining Crew, Marcoh’s getting translations from Scar (finally), seems the current passage is about a “miracle drug” that extends life and transforms all metals to gold. Damnit, so it’s the Philosopher’s Stone, so much for the notes giving an alternative. Ooh, Xing culture lesson! Apparently Xingese refer to immortals as “a true being” oh Leto DAMN IT it’s right back to that smirking Truth. Whatever. Anyways, “True Beings” are considered perfect souls so they’re compared to the perfect metal gold (yeah, Winry and the Chimeras are totally lost by this point).
[Marcoh]: “So in other words, an immortal person is seen as a golden being.”
[May]: “In a sense…”
*camera shifts to Beard*
Oh. OOOOOOOOHHHHHH!
Keaton said:One thing of note is that all the people of Xerxes have gold hair and gold eyes. And I do mean gold, because there's no black outline that blonde people in the series have.
[May]: “It comes from the man who brought Alchemy to Xing.”
Wait, where are you going? Beard you’re walking away from one of the most badass fighters in the entire show and her husband, team up with them and you’ll be unstoppable! Whyyyyy.
Winry remarks that the Xing teacher of Alchemy having golden hair and eyes sounds like Ed and Al… hold on, I need to check something.
*rewinds to Ed standing in room* *returns to Winry, pausing at Beard along the way*
Huh! So Beard has the Xerxes no-outline blond hair, but Ed has almost this blend between Xerxes and Amestrian hair, he has an outline but it’s not as pronounced as Winry’s. Neat!
Finally, the exit! Scar must have been feeling a bit cooped up since he just kicked the door down. Yoki relishes his newfound competence and takes the lead nope instantly falls into massive snowdrift. I knew it couldn’t last. Aw, Boar sees how deep the snow is and immediately offers to give May a piggyback ride! And Toad says they’ll go first to make walking easier for the rest.
Tumblr media
Walking through a winter wonderland… wait, is that Al? It is Al!
Tumblr media
[Winry]: “That’s Al!” [May]: “THAT’S MY HUSBAND?!”
Jeez May, chill. No I didn’t mean rub your face on Al’s arm, Winry may have frostbite-proof earrings but Al was literally just buried in a snowdrift, you’re gonna lose your cheek at this rate! Al reports on the occupation of Fort Briggs, they’ll be walking right into their hands. So now what, do they just go back to the mine? Wait a minute, Scar just walked off and is staring all mysterious-like at the mountain range… are they going to Drachma? Scar says there’s a mountain village nearby (no idea how to spell that name), there are some Ishvalans living there. Toad and Boar are skeptical, but Yoki’s all too eager to give leadership back to Scar.
Oh shoot yeah, Al did kind of just run off on Kimblee. Do they even have an excuse for that, or is Sideburns just banking on Kimblee being dead before the absence of an Elric brother becomes an issue?
...Ed literally made another suit of armor and is making a Briggs soldier puppet it around. Wow. And the voice? Kimblee, come on. I was just starting to think that you were a valid threat again. Stop disappointing me.
As “Al” struggles with stairs, Sideburns is trying to set up his assassination. Seems Kimblee’s suspicious of the Briggs soldiers (gee, I wonder why) and is planning to search the mines with just his two flunkies. As Sideburns prepares the snipers, Ed runs ahead.
Kimblee orders his guys into the mine to look for tracks as a sniper lines up his shot… until he sees Ed approaching. Ed tries claiming that Kimblee would get lost searching the tunnels- nope, Kimblee’s already clued in on the assassination plan. With an attitude and past like his, he can practically smell the murderous intent. Sideburns tells the sniper to line up the shot and nope Kimblee pops a steamcloud.
Ooooh shoot he’s going into the building with Sideburns and the snipers, isn’t he? Quick Ed, I’m totally ok with the mass murderer getting sniped but if you can still take him alive then never mind, that was a claw strike and a nonhuman fist, flunkies confirmed as Chimeras.
Hey, it’s the Lion and Gorilla from the end credits! New potential recruits for Al’s army, please don’t kill them Ed. Also, I am having major OPM flashbacks now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mid-ep pictures of Kimblee (wait, didn’t he already get one of these?) chewing on a Stone, and Edward getting ready to pummel some Chimeras.
While Ed is otherwise occupied, Kimblee strolls down into the mineshaft and wait what? How are there tracks? The Mine Crew left right before that huge snowstorm that Al could barely read street signs in, how on Leto’s depressing planet were these tracks now obliterated by that storm?
Fighting Music starts up as Ed faces down Lion and Gorilla, he can’t see them but at least they can’t see him but animal hybrids, remember? They’ve got superhuman senses and if sight fails then they can probably hear and smell him with ease. Yup called it. An armknife to the Lion gets Ed free to dodge Gorilla’s attacks, the Briggs troops reach the street but can’t see through the steam to help Ed. Not like they could do much against the Chimeras.
Whoops, Ed dodged a bit too much and walked straight into the mineshaft. Ouch. Now he’s going to stunt his growth even more!
[Ed]: “Dynamite, huh? There’s one perk to fighting in a mine.”
Aw, Ed baby. You’re about to try something that even Yoki knew wouldn’t work, aren’t you?
The Chimeras jump down to continue fighting Ed, who brandishes the sticks in their direction. But they just laugh at him? Aw, they know about dynamite being worthless when damp. So much for that attempt-
Nitroglycerin. Nitroglycol. Ammonium Nitrate. Nitric Acid and Ammonium. YES
By the power of Chemistry, Ed with his silly little nose-plugs and shit-eating grin has turned your superhuman sense of smell into a tactical disadvantage!
Tumblr media
Kimblee looks up to see a stinky explosion and his two flunkies down for the count, now without a hostage in play it’s just the Fullmetal Alchemist and the Crimson Alchemist. Ed demands that Kimblee spill the beans, but Kimblee isn’t inclined to cooperate. Saying he’ll speed things up, he pulls out a Philosopher’s Stone.
Alright, here we go! Ed vs Kimblee, the Stone Seeker against the Butcher of Ishval, our hero facing against the very power he once sought, and a true Philosopher’s Stone at that unlike Cornello’s pale fragment. This is gonna be
are you fucking kidding me.
Kimblee. Kimblee, you stupid incompetent trash-talking eternal disappointment. I thought your “fight” with Scar on the train was as low as you could go, I thought that with you easing back into my good graces you would earn recognition as an acceptable villain. But nooooo, you have to boast that you’ll end this quickly and then stand there like a dolt as Ed nyooms around you and kicks your Stone into the mineshaft. And then he slices your palm so your TC tattoo is useless.
You. Utter. Failure.
Don’t bother trying to continue dude, I know that you’re just gonna pull out your second Stone to try and keep fighting but come on. That was just embarrassing. Just stop, please.
Alright so now he’s got those glowing red eyes like Bradley had when he was blabbing at The Great Armstrong, boasting about how Ed’s mercy just gives him another chance to kill. He spits out his second Stone and wow ok that was a big explosion. The tower over the mining shaft collapses in a huge cloud of smoke, the Briggs troops are knocked back and the Chimeras fall through the shattering floor (noooo, come back, Al hasn’t had a chance to recruit you yet!).
We’ve got the Somber Music playing as the last pebbles fall in the ruined mine shaft, Ed is down at the bottom a little worse for wear. Hey, it’s Lion and Gorilla! Quick Ed, rescue them from the pipes that have them pinned so we can… uh… that’s a lot of blood. You feeling ok, buddy?
OW. Uh, so when Ed fell down into the mine shaft he landed on a beam. And the beam went through him.
Tumblr media
The camera’s shaking and going in and out of focus as Ed tries to pull himself off the beam, but the shock’s setting in and he collapses twitching on the ground eye rolling up and getting obscured by his hair Leto this is not good
Al just collapsed?! Aw hell no he’s getting another pull from his body? Bad timing, Al’s body! The girls are panicking and the Chimera’s are wondering what’s wrong with General Armor Guy, Winry’s doesn’t know what to do and Al’s motionless in the snow not even with his usual glowing eyes stop it
Ed? Ed’s not moving and there’s too much blood finger twitch! He’s still breathing but he really needs to figure out Roy’s flame technique to seal his wound soon.
[Ed]: “I won’t make her cry…Especially not over something this stupid!”
Ok so through the Power of Love Ed is overcoming the shock to Transmute part of the beam away, then Earthbend the rubble off of the Chimeras. They’re not too happy with their boss destroying the building they were in, so heck might as well join up with the kid who dug them out.
So Ed’s helped up by the guys he was enemies with five minutes ago, Lion notes that if he pulls the beam out then Ed’ll bleed out. But Ed has a plan, bioalchemy! He totally read about it before, he’ll be fine. But with all the damage he’ll need the power of a Philosopher’s Stone
well isn’t it convenient that he knocked one down the mine shaft just a little bit ago, huh?!
Wait what, he’s going to “use his own life force”? Take a few years off his lifespan what. Ok, so I’m supposed to just go with the idea that the kid who has no real bioalchemy experience beyond the failed Human Transmutation is going to manage to concentrate as a beam is pulled out of his guts and harness the power of his own soul in a way that’s never been done before. Just spend a minute or two looking for the shiny red gem that’s down there with you! Fine whatever, Protagonist Powers away.
Look I’m sorry I know that this is a moving scene and all with Ed accepting the cost of his mercy and screaming as the bloody beam is yanked from his intestines and visualizing himself as a Single Soul Philosopher’s Stone but come on we clearly saw the Stone fall down and you’re just going to ignore it. Fine whatever I’ll try to move past it. So Ed grits his teeth and managed to ok thank you for not making it perfect, he’s patched up his organs and stopped the bleeding but it’s only a temporary fix, he’ll need some professional help. Not that he plans on getting any, he’s up and raring to keep fighting Kimblee nope he’s out for the count.
Lion and Gorilla look over their rescuer, knowing that he can’t fight their former boss as beat up as he
there it is!
Apologies for the rant about the Stone earlier, Lion just found it and decided to not give it back to Kimblee. They’ll just head out and let the madman think they died in the explosion. As for Ed? They’re off to find the kid a doctor. (Oh please let this go where I think it’s going… *knock knock* [Lion]: “Hey, so we hear you’re a good doctor, and we’ve got this kid who’s a bit beat up…” [Doc]: “Oh come on!” pleasepleaseplease)

Supernatural: Proverbs 17:3 (15x05)
Ooh the parallels! The meta! The heavy-handed foreshadowing, and then the acknowledgment of said heavy-handed foreshadowing. And Lilith! Let's dive in.
Cons:
I've talked about this before, and I think it's pretty standard criticism of Supernatural, but it's still kind of funny to me when Sam and Dean get flung around the room and knocked unconscious all the time. There's no way Sam doesn't have concussion syndrome at this point. To not only get hit on the head, but to be knocked out because of it for several minutes? That's a serious, serious injury. It's always so funny to me when the boys get knocked about so easily in every episode, because it seems like dumb luck that they're still alive.
The episode was only slightly past the thirty minute mark when the werewolves were dead, so it was so obviously telegraphed that there was more to the story. I would have wanted just one more twist thrown in for good measure, to try and trick audiences into maybe falling for the C-plot setup just a bit more. As it was, everything was so standard, so predictable, that I was primed for a big twist from the start.
Pros:
But honestly? This episode kicked ass, and it furthered the main plot, and if the worst thing I can say about it is that maybe it was slightly too predictable, I think we've got a winner on our hands.
Before we touch on the meta stuff, let's talk about the parallels as they stand. The obvious one is with the werewolf brothers. One brother shoots the other and then kills himself, because they had both become monsters. Sam and Dean are forced to watch, and the symbolism is certainly not lost on them, even before Lilith spells it out. This is the telegraphed ending, the confrontation we've come across before. It's high melodrama, and it's been done as the climactic ending of several seasons of Supernatural. Again and again, Sam and Dean would rather let the world burn than lose one another.
The story of the werewolf brothers also continues one of Supernatural's most repeated and yet sometimes muddled themes, that of whether monsters are salvageable or all need to be killed. We seem to have landed pretty firmly on the side of things that says there is redemption for monsters. We just saw Benny for a moment there last week, and characters like Jack are meant to be an argument against the inevitability of evil. It's a free will thing, right? So this ending for the werewolves, where death is the only salvation left to them, is clearly Chuck's philosophy, not the one that the show is going to land on in the end.
There was another parallel that I thought was really interesting. Before we know that Ashley is actually Lilith, she has this super on-the-nose conversation with Dean about how she doesn't know what she wanted to do with her life. I suddenly realized that she's a new graduate from college, the same age that Sam was when this show started fifteen years ago (it makes the potential romantic angle between Dean and Ashley really gross, in my opinion - I was getting more of a father-daughter vibe from them). But in any case, one of the other big questions this show is going to have to answer is how Sam and Dean will end up. Alive or dead? I'm betting on alive. And if that's the case, we've got to decide whether they will keep hunting forever, or whether they get a different ending. Dean is telling us that he loves his job and wants to keep hunting. Sam, I think, probably wants to settle down if at all possible. I like that these questions are being introduced here, as it's starting to set up whatever sort of epilogue we'll get at the end of the show.
I just want to say thumbs up on the continuing nostalgia factor these days. Thus far, returning characters/cameos include Ketch, Rowena, Kevin, Benny, Lilith, Becky, Amara... and I'm sure the list will go on. It's fun to have nods to the past in almost every episode, and they are managing to make it feel all very organic because the show itself has become about the fact that it's a story. Does that sentence even make sense? Well, you get the point. The meta nature of our final A-plot makes it work to have so many call-backs to the past.
And let's talk about that meta, shall we? For all that I was digging the parallels in a lot of ways, I was almost going to put something in the "cons" section to complain about how on-the-nose it all was. There's something to be said for a bit of subtlety, after all. But then Ashley turned out to be Lilith, and everything changed. Because all of this heavy-handed storytelling isn't the show-runners or writers. I mean, it is, but it's on purpose, because that's how Chuck rolls.
It makes everything come full circle in a way that feels true to Supernatural's origins. To the amazing five-season arc that made up the best of what the show had to offer, a decade ago. It comes down to brother vs. brother, but what it really comes down to is free will vs. destiny. That's the beating heart of this show, and Chuck is the one writing the story. He might not realize it right now, being that he's a merciless villain, but if Sam and Dean thwart him, and achieve their happiness, that is the ending that is narratively earned. That is the only appropriate way to end the story. Chuck is stuck in a cycle of dramatic and ironic deaths, where Sam and Dean, two people who would let the world burn for one another, are forced by circumstance to die by each other's hand. And the only true ending to this show can be the one where Sam and Dean are forced by circumstance to make that choice, and choose to say no. It doesn't matter that we've been here before, so many times. That's the story Chuck wants to tell, and it's the story Sam and Dean will refuse.
I also want to touch base on Sam's dreams for a moment. We get the very predictable, yet still cool, revelation that Chuck and Sam are linked because of the "Equalizer" bullet that Sam shot Chuck with at the end of last season. Because of that, Sam is getting access into some of Chuck's imagined endings. We had the dream last week, and here we see Sam killing Dean again, this time with fire. And then we see Dean, a demon once again with the Mark of Cain back on his arm, stabbing Sam with the First Blade. Sam is disturbed by the nightmares, but keeps them from Dean until Dean tells Sam what Lilith told him about God's plan. I'm glad that Sam and Dean got to go a little while without knowing Chuck was still around, but it makes sense that as we're now 25% done with the season, they are back in the know and ready to face down their greatest challenge yet. This is exciting stuff, guys!
Lilith's return was everything it should have been. I knew a twist was coming, but when Ashley tripped and fell and was impaled on those antlers, I was legitimately shocked. And then - Lilith? Of all people? I was, as they say, shook. She destroys the Equalizer, which is good because I hate the super-powered weapon thing, and she tortures Dean a little bit just for fun, while under orders to leave both of the boys alive for Chuck's bigger plan. Obviously I am a sucker for Dean doing anything and everything to protect Sam, so that moment when Sam was lying there unconscious and Lilith starts to walk towards him, and Dean says "don't touch him," was just... *chef's kiss*.
And finally, let's turn to the Cas of it all. I am actually super delighted by the way they are doing this whole Cas and Dean breakup subplot. It's pretty clear from the brief mentions we get that Dean did not clue Sam in to what went down between them. Sam is texting and calling Cas and getting no answer, and Dean is shrugging and acting like nothing's wrong. Sam left a message cluing him in on the Chuck and Lilith situation, so what else can they do? I love that Dean is acting all casual and unconcerned. Because he's probably hurt and guilty, and he doesn't know how to process that right now when it comes to Cas. It's all leading up to some kind of resolution that I think I'm probably going to be happy with, no matter how blatantly no-homo they go with it. At least we're getting an entire emotional arc about their friendship. That's frankly more than I was expecting.
Dang, this review got long. I guess that's what happens when the episode ends up being really, really good! I'm pretty pumped for how the show is going to end, and ready for lots of nostalgia and gratuitous angst along the way!

So this morning when I woke up I caught wind of the new episode summary. I went to the official Shingeki website to check it out and basically the phrase “Eren and Historia are kidnapped” made my heart splatter on the floor. I could feel my cheeks getting red, I was angry. How could half of the arc even happen if Eren and Historia are no longer with Squad Levi for the other events in the first two volumes? What of their character development now? What of the chain events? How would Historia know she’s supposed to become queen? What’s gonna make her want to punch Levi? Will she punch Levi? Oh god will we even get Levi’s smile? I was upset. This can’t happen, they need to fill in 12 episodes of Uprising and they cut half of it out??
But after having a few good conversations with @yaboylevi, @lampurple and @attraversiamo19 and a few others in the Eren Discord, I felt much better. It was brought to my attention that the summary for episode 38 was only for the first half of the episode, therefor the same should apply to episode 39. Besides, why spoil the fact that Eren and Historia are legitimately captured at all? Why put it at the beginning of the episode? That is surely ideal cliffhanger material, no?
Speculation and predictions under the cut:
The general gist of the summary is this: Eren and Historia are taken. Levi and Kenny meet again, they have history together? Jean and the rest must join in on the action.
The preview for episode 39 showed us that the bar scene between Levi and Kenny will be present, that the cart carrying Eren and Historia gets the top blown off. Historia is passed out. Armin’s reaction to killing the MP he shoots. When I went back to watch the preview to look for more context clues, this stuck with me:
Tumblr media
We already know that Armin is going to shoot someone. And this is very clearly the same reaction he had to it in the manga. So that is definitely happening in episode 39. But the clue that he does this is prefaced with “in order to get them back” which would indicate that, most likely, they are successful.
My guess is that Eren and Historia are both passed out on the cart (this is supported by Kaji Yuki saying previously how he has no lines in episode two and wasn’t needed for it). Keiji (Hange’s last remaining squad member who stuck with Levi) will be killed and an MP will hijack the cart. Once squad Levi enters the scene, they work to hijack the cart so they can get Eren and Historia back. It’s possible that Jean could end up in the cart with them with the order to protect them. The MP Armin shoots will still land in the cart and become a threat with Jean unable to bring himself to shoot and Armin having to dirty his hands instead. They get away, successfully retrieving Eren and Historia.
If this is how it turns out (and it doesn’t have to be exactly like this - the important part is that they do, in fact, keep Eren and Historia with them instead of losing them), then this is what’s going to make the story so much stronger than what Isayama wrote in his manga, and would explain why he’s so very satisfied with the manuscript and believes the story will be stronger for it. And if they get to keep Eren and Historia after the struggle they had in chapter 58, it’s going to make context of certain scenes much more poignant and have much more impact. A few points to this:
Eren and Historia can now be present for Levi’s words of wisdom to his squad about having to be willing to get your hands dirty. This is something that could stretch well and beyond the Uprising arc... It could add to Eren’s characterization as far as the Marley arc when he does, in fact, get his hands very dirty.
Later, in the cave, Eren would be aware of the fact that Armin had to kill someone in order to try and protect him - This will add to the things that weigh heavily on his conscience when he ultimately has his mental breakdown.
Armin shooting the MP before he makes his “we’re not good people anymore” gives that commentary so much more weight.
Levi’s reaction to Historia’s reluctance to take up her role as queen would make much more sense. They had just killed people to protect her and risked everything, and to have her back out of accepting a vital role they require her to take after dealing with the stress of that would better explain it when Levi threatens her and yells at her. Still wouldn’t justify his actions, of course, but it would no longer feel like it was just suddenly out of nowhere.
It also makes Levi’s speech about how he’s willing to become a lunatic who's willing to murder people in order to protect humanity as a whole have more weight - his squad has already seen him do it!
It’s odd in the manga that Levi is suspicious that Kenny might be involved when we’re clued in on the notion that Levi saw Kenny kidnap Eren and Historia (as he is outside with his cloak on behind a tree). By all logic, he should already be aware that Kenny is involved. So rearranging the Kenny vs. Levi fight to happen before the real kidnapping closes that plot hole a bit.
Of course, Eren and Historia sticking with them also allows Levi to still make a deal with Dimo Reeves, keeps the context for when Historia gets to punch Levi and make him smile, allows space for Historia to recall her backstory as well as allow Eren to possibly recall some more context about the experiments (something @fluffymusketeer pointed out to me is that anime onlys feel that there is more context needed for that scene and that something is definitely missing - manga readers know exactly what’s missing and how it’s so, so important to the story).
All of these things add extra context and weight to what the characters say and what they are dealing with, how events affect their actions later, and make things stronger overall. This gives the potential for Uprising arc in the anime to pack a really powerful punch and will far exceed what Isayama gave us in the manga. Something which Isayama himself seems very pumped up about.
In short, these changes are good. And they’re going to make for a crazy ride. And I’m really excited.
I truly hope I do not have to eat my words on Sunday!

Post Stream Report
I’m glad I have a habit of NEVER replaying my favorite games unless they’re “score attack” sort of games like Alleyway or Vs. Pinball, cause only 20 years of not having touched it once could have given me as great of a time rediscovering Kirby’s Adventure as I had tonight!
I beat the game! And forgot a LOT of details of the final few stages of the game.
For a series that has a reputation for being ultra easy, those last few stages are FIERCE.
And afterwards we played around on the NES Classic Edition, doing some real rapid fire variety for the first time since the Analogue Pocket test streams!
Titles included:
Kirby's Adventure
Ice Climber
Donkey Kong (NES)
Super Mario Bros. 2
Balloon Fight
Galaga (NES)
I basically just sampled each game and gave my opinion and shared my personal history with each title.
Oh and I did take some high scores down for all the games I actually enjoyed, which definitely didn’t include Ice Climber, the game that stole Pinball and/or Clu Clu Land’s spot on the NES Classic Edition and only made it on because the Ice Climber protags became retroactively notable due to their gag-tier inclusion in Smash Bros. Melee.
But yeah.
I’ll be back Friday 3/25/22 for a release day stream of Kirby and the Forgotten Land for Nintendo Switch.

Toot That Horn Softer (PPTQ Report: *1st* with 5c Humans)
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the list that took down the event:
// 60 Maindeck // 4 Artifact 4 Aether Vial
// 37 Creature 4 Noble Hierarch 4 Champion of the Parish 4 Thalia's Lieutenant 4 Phantasmal Image 4 Meddling Mage 4 Kitesail Freebooter 3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben 4 Mantis Rider 3 Militia Bugler 3 Reflector Mage
// 19 Land 4 Cavern of Souls 4 Unclaimed Territory 4 Ancient Ziggurat 4 Horizon Canopy 1 Seachrome Coast 1 Plains 1 Island
// 15 Sideboard // 2 Artifact SB: 2 Damping Sphere
// 13 Creature SB: 1 Kataki, War's Wage SB: 1 Reclamation Sage SB: 1 Hostage Taker SB: 2 Sin Collector SB: 2 Auriok Champion SB: 1 Militia Bugler SB: 2 Selfless Spirit SB: 2 Izzet Staticaster SB: 1 Kambal, Consul of Allocation
A few subtle changes here. Kambal was another concession to KCI, which is rapidly picking up steam in my tournament area. KCI can’t combo off before getting Kambal off the board, and KCI can’t really get Kambal off the board without blowing an Engineered Explosives on three, which it doesn’t really want to do against Humans when so much of the matchup revolves around two-drops.
The other change was taking out a Reclamation Sage for a Hostage Taker. I very much wanted the fourth Reflector Mage for creature matchups, but again KCI dominated my sideboard process and I also wanted another artifact answer with a second Reclamation Sage, so I consolidated the two sideboard slots with a single Hostage Taker. The thought is that for paying one more mana, I get to play the fourth Reflector Mage and the second Reclamation Sage in the same slot.
Round 1: 2-0 vs Green-White Bogles
Tumblr media
Game 1: Got to be on the play, and Aether Vial into Champion of the Parish plus Kitesail Freebooter kept a Daybreak Coronet off the field. Double Thalia’s Lieutenant followed up by Mantis Rider raced very well and closed out the game.
Game 2: Another Aether Vial led into Kitesail Freebooter taking a Daybreak Coronet, and then an instant-speed Kitesail Freebooter took a freshly-drawn Daybreak Coronet the following turn. Militia Bugler found Phantasmal Image, and Mantis Rider plus Thalia’s Lieutenant got around a reasonably-sized Kor Spiritdancer.
Sideboard Plan:
-2 Mantis Rider, -1 Reflector Mage +2 Selfless Spirit, +1 Reclamation Sage
It’s not a great plan, but the general idea to use the two-drops already in the deck to try and Spirit Mantle and Daybreak Coronet from resolving, then try to race. The Reclamation Sage is basically to destroy any enchantment that gives a hexproof creature lifelink, and the Selfless Spirit is basically our emergency button; while we’re building our field, we can usually build a big enough board that could trade with a bogle if it was indestructible, but it falters in the face of any totem armor aura, so if you’re trying to work the game to that kind of critical turn, Reclamation Sage should go after totem armors instead of the lifelink auras.
Round 2: 0-2 vs Green-Red Scapeshift
Tumblr media
Game 1: I kept a one-lander with an Aether Vial, but never saw a second land. Thalia into Mantis Rider was too slow, and opponent had the Lightning Bolts to protect himself before going into his combo.
Game 2: A more aggressive draw of Noble Hierarch, two Thalia’s Lieutenants and lands was readily undone by Anger of the Gods, and my opponent’s Prismatic Omen into Primeval Titan for double Scapeshift beat me real fast.
Sideboard Plan:
-3 Reflector Mage  +2 Selfless Spirit, +1 Militia Bugler
Number one goal is to keep Scapeshift from resolving. Again, our two-drops are key here, so we’re just trying to protect them from Anger of the Gods/Sweltering Suns with Selfless Spirit, or find more of them with the fourth Militia Bugler.
Round 3: 2-1 vs Mono-Black Devotion
Tumblr media
Game 1: When I saw my opponent lead on two swamps in the first two turns, I thought he might be on some kind of Death’s Shadow list or maybe 8-Rack, but then double Gatekeeper of Malakir into Phyrexian Obliterator clued me into what was up. I could not stick a creature through two more removal spells, and my opponent won pretty handily.
Game 2: Deck came roaring out of the game with turn 2 Mantis Rider off Noble Hierarch into another Mantis Rider, which both flew over the resolved Phyrexian Obliterator and took the game.
Game 3: An early Kitesail Freebooter took a key Fatal Push, then Meddling Mage was able to lock out the rest of his hand, leaving him with a Demigod of Revenge he couldn’t pay for and a Geralf’s Messenger that was too low-impact. I found another Meddling Mage to lock out the Demigod of Revenge, and my other creatures were able to race his.
Sideboard Plan:
-4 Aether Vial +2 Auriok Champion, +1 Militia Bugler, +1 Sin Collector
I haven’t got any experience with the specific matchup, but I figured the mix of “black removal + finishers” was close enough to what Jund was doing, so I incorporated a similar plan - get rid of my Aether Vials to make my top decks more live, and be ready to try and grind games out.
Round 4: 2-0 vs Mardu Pyromancer
Tumblr media
Game 1: A good start here with Turn 1 Champion of the Parish, Turn 2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben backed by Kitesail Freebooter beat an average draw from my opponent.
Game 2: Kitesail Freebooter into Meddling Mage locked out some key removal. My opponent used Inquisition of Kozelik to strip away a Thalia’s Lieutenant, but Horizon Canopy found another one and insulated my creatures from Collective Brutality, which were able to close the game out through a Blood Moon.
Sideboard Plan:
-2 Reflector Mage, -2 Aether Vial  +2 Sin Collector, +1 Kambal, Consul of Allocation, +1 Militia Bugler
Typically against midrange decks like this, we want to get rid of our Aether Vials because of how bad they can be off the top of the library, but because of Blood Moon, we have to be aware of the fact that we can be locked out of our spells, so keeping two Aether Vials in seems okay, even if we draw them in the mid-game. Aside from that, it’s our typical grindy matchup package, with Kambal as an additional wrinkle because of how punishing he can be against cards like Faithless Looting and Manamorphose.
Round 5: 2-1 vs Black-Red Hollow One
Tumblr media
At this point, I was 3-1, and knew that if I could draw in my last round, I could probably slide into top 8 at 4-1-1.
Game 1: I got to be on the play and snuck in an Aether Vial. My opponent used Burning Inquiry to try and set off one of his big plays, and had to discard two Hollow Ones. A follow-up of Champion of the Parish, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Mantis Rider, and Thalia’s Lieutenant overwhelmed my opponent’s anemic board state of two Flameblade Adepts.
Game 2:  Two Flameblade Adepts in the first two turns turned out to be much better on the play, as they were able to roll into a Goblin Lore, which enabled my opponent to also bring back two Flamewake Phoenixes. My draw of triple Kitesail Freebooter couldn’t do anything more than chump block, and I could never get back in the game.
Game 3: Again, double Flameblade Adept on the draw was too slow, and my curve of Noble Hierarch, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, double Thalia’s Lieutenant was too fast to race, and Thalia kepthim from being able to double spell in a single turn. He was able to play a Hollow One, but Reclamation Sage closed the game out.
Sideboard Plan:
-4 Mantis Rider +1 Militia Bugler, +1 Auriok Champion, +1 Reclamation Sage, +1 Hostage Taker
It’s tempting to want to keep in Mantis Riders with the thought that the board is going to stall and you would like to fly over it, but what I’ve found is that you’re often better served trying to dominate the ground, outsize or otherwise deal with Hollow Ones, and push through that way. If Thalia, Guardian of Thraben can become a 4-power creature, she beats every creature the deck presents except Flamewake Phoenix.
Round 6: 2-0 vs Grixis Control
Tumblr media
After Round 5, the judges put up the standings. Lo and behold, my tiebreakers were the worst of the 4-1s, so I would be the odd man out if everyone drew. But by virtue of me having to play, everyone else had to play theirs out as well. Looking at the pairings, I thought I would be playing against one of my testing partners in the Humans mirror match, but I was actually paired up against an opponent with Pro Tour experience playing Grixis Control, a deck with all the tools to beat up on Humans.
So it wasn’t looking great.
Game 1: I won the die roll, and got to play Cavern of Souls into Aether Vial. When I followed up with Kitesail Freebooter, I saw a hand full of counterspells that were basically blank against me. Champion of the Parish and Thalia’s Lieutenant ended up cleaning up the game.
Game 2: My opponent fired off three Serum Visions in the first two turns and missed his fourth land drop. Sin Collector revealed a hand of lands, two Anger of the Gods, Logic Knot, and Cryptic Command. Sin Collector took an Anger, my opponent played the other, and the follow-up of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Mantis Rider was too fast and disruptive for my opponent to stabilize, and then Kambal, Consul of Allocation closed the door on any potential comeback.
Sideboard Plan:
-3 Reflector Mage, -3 Phantasmal Image, -2 Meddling Mage  +2 Selfless Spirit, +2 Auriok Champion, +2 Sin Collector, +1 Kambal, Consul of Allocation
Normally Phantasmal Image can double up on Kitesail Freebooter in control matchups to really seize tempo, but any deck with access to Electrolyze just makes the card look embarrassing, so we cut three. Additionally, Meddling Mage tends to suffer in matchups with diverse removal, so we cut two  of that card as well. Auriok Champion may seem like a strange include, but oftentimes it can be difficult for RBx decks to interact with, and if they can’t find a Snapcaster mage to block, it can randomly steal a game.
So I got to end the Swiss Portion of the PPTQ at 5-1, which netted me the fourth seed. I had been doing some scouting of the top tables, and a lot of the Top 8 consisted of regulars at my LGS, which I was very excited for. Now, as the fourth seed, I would get to be on the play, which means that if I ran hot, I could probably beat any deck in the format just with that tempo advantage, as long as it wasn’t some awful matchup like Bogles.
Quarterfinals: 2-0 vs Green-White Bogles
Tumblr media
Shit.
Game 1: A different opponent than the one from the Swiss, my opponent knew his deck frontwards and backwards. However, he kept a strange hand of four creatures, two lands, and only a Gryff’s Boon to suit up with. He wasn’t able to get the critical mass of enchantments to race me, and my field presence eventually was boosted by Thalia’s Lieutenant, which overran him.
Game 2: Fortunately for me, my opponent’s deck bit him back with its rather high misfire rate. He had to mulligan away his first two hands that had no lands, and was down to four before he found something playable. I got to play Aether Vial on Turn 1, Champion of the Parish and Thalia on Turn 2, and then chained together three Kitesail Freebooters on his next three draw steps and two Meddling Mages, which locked him out of the game.
Sideboard Plan:
-2 Mantis Rider, -1 Reflector Mage +2 Selfless Spirit, +1 Reclamation Sage
So moving onto the semifinals, I saw that of the other three players still in the tournament, two were the players I played with in the team RPTQ event and the third was a player we all tested with very consistently. The climate suddenly became much more relaxed, as the players made it feel more like a normal FNM than us vying for an RPTQ qualification. I didn’t say anything too sappy at the time, but I was so proud of the store and these players for their exceptional performance that say.
Semifinals: 2-0 vs Jeskai Control
Tumblr media
This teammate of mine had been playing Jeskai Control for about a year now, and he became an exception pilot (even going undefeated in day one of the more recent modern GPs). I liked my odds in the matchup generally, but I knew too that if it got close, he was slightly better than me at finding winning lines, so I felt like I had to play more aggressively and capitalize on any small edges I was able to find.
Game 1: Turn 1 Cavern of Souls into Aether Vial continued to be troublesome for control decks pre-board. Instant speed Kitesail Freebooters over the next three turns kept his card advantage spells off the stack, and eventually a Meddling Mage on Path to Exile protected a Mantis Rider long enough to close the game out.
Game 2: A very, very grindy game in which my opponent casted five Lightning Helices over several turns with the help of Snapcaster Mage, and was left with a Snapcaster Mage, a Celestial Colonnade, and six other lands against me with six lands and a Champion of the Parish. Had it been the swiss, I would have considered conceding and just going to game 3, but considering life totals were still high (my 20 to his 23), I decided to continue the fight, hoping to find any insight as to his sideboard plans. Empty-handed, I ripped a Militia Bugler, which found the one Phantasmal Image still in the deck. That card became a Militia Bugler, which found a Kambal, Consul of Allocations, which was the star of my comeback. Champion of the Parish was able to grow to a 7/7 after I found a pair of Kitesail Freebooters and Noble Hierarchs over the next several turns, and was able to whittle away at a large board state my opponent created with Secure the Wastes. Meanwhile, my opponent was racing me with Celestial Colonnade while trying to pick off my fliers. We ground down to the point where we were both at 3 life. Kambal and the Kitesails had combined for 17 damage and had gained me enough life to stay alive in the race, before he had to kill the Kambal with Path to Exile, going to 1. On my turn, I found a reflector mage, and had five lethal attackers against his four blockers, which included his Colonnade. I knew that if he had Path to Exile, he had enough to stave me off for one more turn and probably crack back for the win, so I used Reflector Mage to bounce a token. I swung out, and he showed me the Path that he did indeed have, and conceded.
Sideboard Plan:
-1 Reflector Mage, -3 Phantasmal Image, -2 Meddling Mage +2 Selfless Spirit, +2 Sin Collector, +1 Kambal, Consul of Allocations, +1 Militia Bugler
Normally, Reflector Mage is not what you want against Jeskai Control, but I had been watching my teammate play all day and knew that he was bringing in Baneslayer Angel as a way to close the door on creature decks, so I had to keep in at least two Reflector Mages, because if he ever got to swing with Baneslayer Angel, the game was probably over.
Finals: 2-1 vs Black-Red DredgeVine
Tumblr media
So the finals turned out to be me against my other teammate from the RPTQ, whose strength was less in finding obscure lines and more being able to pick up complex decks very quickly, which ended up being a huge asset when he picked up DredgeVine. I had only played against the deck once and dismissed it pretty quickly as an interesting deck that might have been too inconsistent to be a legitimate threat to the format, but I had watched him tear up most of the swiss (his only loss was to my opponent from the semifinals) and beat my other testing partner (who happened to be on Humans) in three games in the semifinals, one of which involved a game 3 where he got to play two Vengevines out of the graveyard while on the play on turn 2. I didn’t feel like I had much of an edge going into the finals, but my one advantage was that I got to be on the play for game 1.
Game 1: Turn 2 Militia Bugler off of Noble Hierarch found me a Thalia’s Lieutenant to compliment the one I already had in my hand. I got to double-up on Turn 3, which made my Bugler a 4/5, and then a 5/6 with an exalted trigger. It was able to hold down the ground against a pair of Vengevines while a Mantis Rider chipped away at his life total in the air.
Game 2: On the draw, Noble Hierarch + Horizon Canopy as my only mana sources seemed risky, but I felt like the risk was worth it in a matchup that would probably be decided in the first three turns. My opponent had a slow start with a Faithless Looting on Turn 1, which I thought was going to give me an opening, but he was able to get two Vengevines online on the following turn. I tried to follow up with Champion of the Parish and Auriok Champion off a second Horizon Canopy, which had a positive interaction with Bridge from Below in my favor, netting me one life whenever he made a zombie and being able to block zombies and Bloodghasts for free, but he went too wide and eventually Goblin Bushwhacker combined with the damage from my two Horizon Canopies ended the game.ended the game.
Game 3: We both took a mulligan, and I kept a hand of two Noble Hierarches, Phantasmal Image, and three lands, one of which was a Horizon Canopy. I kept, thinking that any creature I had would be good enough to double-up on with Phantasmal Image. I found Militia Bugler, kept it on top, and played it on turn 2 in the face of my opponent’s Faithless Looting, which dumped a Vengevine and a Bridge From Below. I grabbed a Thalia’s Lieutenant with the Bugler, with the hope of setting up double Lieutenant on my Bugler to hold down the ground, as I had done in game 1. However, my opponent evoked a Shriekmaw and cast a Walking Ballista for 0, which got him back his Vengevine and a Zombie for his trouble.
At this point, I honestly thought the game was over. My best out was probably Reflector Mage, but if he got to go crazy with Bridge from Below, I was probably dead. But the top of my deck was kind and found me a Mantis Rider, which let me get in for some damage and shored up my defense. My opponent followed up with a Viscera Seer, but couldn’t attack with anything besides his Vengevine. On the next turn, I still had the Phantasmal Image and contemplated just playing the image on my Mantis Rider and trying to race. However, I knew that if he got to gain too many zombies from Bridge from Below in conjunction with his Viscera Seer, I wouldn’t be able to win. So I played Phantasmal Image with the intent of copying his Viscera Seer, which I knew could sacrifice itself to its own effect. It was a paltry waste of a Phantasmal Image, but it would get rid of his Bridge from Below and hopefully give me the time to win, and I would get a scry for my trouble. So I made the play, got rid of his bridge and attacked, which dropped him to ten. On the next turn, my opponent kicked a Goblin Bushwhacker, which with the Vengevine, zombie token, and a Stitcher’s Supplier, would kill me, so I blocked the Supplier with Mantis Rider and fell to 1. I found a Kitesail Freebooter and played it, which showed me a hand of Bloodghast and Hangarback Walker. I was able to play another Noble Hierarch that I drew off a cracked Horizon Canopy and attacked with Mantis Rider, which dropped him to 5. I had three blockers against his two attackers, and knew that if he played the Bloodghast, I could block the Bloodghast with Mantis Rider, block the Vengevine with Kitesail Freebooter, fall to 1, and get him on the crackback. My opponent drew his card, tanked for about a minute, then played the Bloodghast and swung out. I made the right blocks, dropped to 1, and my opponent conceded.
Sideboard plan:
-2 Meddling Mage, -1 Kitesail Freebooter +2 Auriok Champion, + Militia Bugler
I’ll be honest, I was fortunate to win against a deck in which I had no legitimate sideboard slots or even an actual plan for. Moving forward, something like Phyrexian Revoker on Viscera Seer could be something. Anafenza, the Foremost would most likely be what we wanted, but she may in all honesty be too slow. If this deck picks up steam, you should definitely dedicate some sideboard slots to it, as the matchup can quickly spiral out of control.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
By the thinnest of margins, I was able to win this Modern PPTQ. From a personal standpoint, it felt like a huge weight off my shoulders and a tremendous “level-up” moment for me. For as long as I’ve been playing Magic, I’ve struggled with finding a Modern deck that best suited me and my playstyle, but was also powerful enough to actually contend in the format. 5c Humans provided all of that to me and more, and I’m so excited for the RPTQ in December.
Looking at how the matchups went, I was happy with how the deck performed, but I really did miss the fourth Reflector Mage. If I were going to run it back next weekend, it would probably look like this:
// 60 Maindeck // 4 Artifact 4 Aether Vial
// 37 Creature 4 Noble Hierarch 4 Champion of the Parish 4 Thalia's Lieutenant 4 Phantasmal Image 4 Meddling Mage 4 Kitesail Freebooter 3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben 4 Mantis Rider 3 Militia Bugler 3 Reflector Mage
// 19 Land 4 Cavern of Souls 4 Unclaimed Territory 4 Ancient Ziggurat 4 Horizon Canopy 1 Seachrome Coast 1 Plains 1 Island
// 15 Sideboard // 2 Artifact SB: 2 Relic of Progenitus
// 13 Creature SB: 2 Kataki, War's Wage SB: 2 Reclamation Sage SB: 2 Sin Collector SB: 2 Auriok Champion SB: 1 Militia Bugler SB: 1 Reflector Mage SB: 2 Selfless Spirit SB: 1 Kambal, Consul of Allocation
So, this’ll probably be all that I write about Modern for a hot minute. I have a Standard RPTQ coming up in September, but once that’s done, I’ll be focusing fully on Modern, and you can bet I’ll be leading the charge with 5c Humans!
Until then, happy spellslinging.
