of course i am!! <3 i love literature!! but if i’m being completely honest i mostly read 18th century lit HAHAHA ick that sounds so pretentious LMAO (/ω＼) hmm the only rec i have for you is wuthering heights, because catherine and heathcliff’s relationship is definitely Something. you didn’t ask about films, BUT i love film with all my heart and i am going to recommend true romance if you’re looking for a relationship similar to the relationships i create in my writing! true romance is one of my favourite films ever and clarence + alabama’s relationship serves as huge inspiration for the ones i write! <3

other than that, i’ve heard that a bunch of the ‘dark romance’ genre books recommended on tiktok etc. have similar toxic relationships and scenarios to the ones i write! i haven’t ever read any of them, so i can’t give you titles or speak to how well they’re written, but you can always look into that genre and see if you can find a list of recs for it! i’m sure there’s tons floating around on google + social media! good luck anon <3

January Malec fic rec!

Because I'm always weak for a theme, I've decided to take a theme for each small fic rec and we're starting out with wing fics! I'm trying to keep this to one rec per author, but some of them have multiple wing fics, so make sure to go look!

Also, for those who want to add their own recs, please feel free to do so!

One-shots:

Angel Feathers by Eff_Dragonkiller: A fic with a winged Alec that has some interesting world-building regarding the winged Nephilim! Not for those who are big fans of Clary as a character though.

Summary:

Magnus ran his finger down the list of ingredients checking that they had everything needed for the antidote. Manticore horn--check. Newt's eye, Star's tear, Tongue of the devil--check, check, check. An Angel's feather--not check. Not check at all.

Feather of a Nephilim by Bohemian (Linguam): Magnus gets a call from Izzy to warn him something happened to Alec, but she can't tell him what. Finding out his husband sprouted wings while he wasn't looking wasn't something Magnus saw coming.

Summary:

Magnus can feel the bones in Alec’s hand shift for how hard he’s squeezing. “Alexander, please. Whatever it is, let me help you.” Alec frowns down at their hands. His throat works. “Did you know that some Nephilim are born with wings?” Magnus stares at him. Out of all the things he had expected, it certainly wasn’t that.

First step after the fall by sugarandspace: What if Magnus had a different warlock mark and dove after Alec when he was standing on that roof in S2e8? (Yes a Magnus wingfic!!!)

Summary:

Magnus sees Alec fall from the ledge and in a blink of an eye Magnus' wings are out and he's rushing to catch him. When Alec regains consciousness they need to have a conversation - both about how Alec reacted to the spell and about Magnus' warlock mark.

Painted Wings by AceOnIce: A slightly different take on wings. This fic is just fluffy and adorable and sometimes that's just what you need.

Summary:

Magnus wants to make his art project unique so he enlists his boyfriend's help. Alec is the best canvas, and muse, Magnus has ever encountered.

Multi-chapter fics or series:

Set Free by @dreaming-marchling: I suppose most people who like wingfics have already read this gem, but I couldn't write a wingfic list without including this one because I love it so much.

Summary:

Alec Lightwood has wings and he is not okay with it. Magnus is, though. He is totally okay with it and he will drag Alec down the path of self-acceptance kicking and screaming.

Courting Rituals of a Modern Day Warlock by @to-the-stars-writing wonderful like all of the fics by to-the-stars-writing! An everyone has wings fic!

Summary:

After everything with the Soul Sword, after breaking apart and then bringing their lives back together, Alec wanted to do something to show Magnus that he truly loved him. Something that would let the warlock know just how important he was.

Embroidery Rose by tiredfairycake: This one is an emotional rollercoaster. Temporary character death, but it has a happy ending.

Summary:

Alec dies and Magnus is left to deal with it, until seven months later when Alec comes walking into the loft, covered in dirt and blood.

Take These Broken Wings by Molly-Jae: A wings soulmate AU!

Summary:

Alec hadn't wanted a soulmate until he'd nearly lost him. Magnus just wanted a chance at peace (in the world? of mind? -- that's left to be seen).

Fallen Angel by cuubism: What the summary says!

Summary:

“What do you think you could do,” Alec says, “with angelic power?” Alec and Asmodeus make a different deal.

I hope anyone else who had a long weekend for Memorial Day had some good reading! I fully intended to start Bordertown and next months book club but did not, oops. Instead I had an excellent time hiking at one of our state parks, so I guess the trade off is fair!

I’d also love recommendations for a classic mystery series or my next DWJ if you have any thoughts.

The highlight of this month was the final Peter Wimsey novel Busman’s Honeymoon, which was so good, everyone was right about the Harriet Vane books being the best, and I’m devastated there’s not more (I still have to hunt down the short stories, but it’s not the same).

As for the good, Mansfield Park was my last, much belated Austen and while slow, I love Fanny so much! House of Many Ways was also fun, and I think I can conclusively say I didn’t like HMC much not because tumblr had spoiled me, but because I enjoy Howl more in small doses and not as the entree. Clary Sage was an unexpected but welcome little addition to the Greenwing & Dart series (Hal!!!) and I’m mad at my brain that I haven’t been able to wrangle myself into reading Victoria’s previous release yet. Which is to say, I’ve thrown myself at KJ Charles because I know they’ll be enjoyable, easy reads and I’m trying desperately to get my reading brain back on track. (So far I’d rate Will Darling better than The Magpie Lord, if we want to talk her mystery series)

Salt Fat Acid Heat probably would have gotten bumped up to ‘liked” if I’d had a physical copy to look at (would not rec just the audiobook) so I might do that in the future. We Hunt the Flame was ok - definitely readable, I liked the second book more but maybe just from familiarity - but it’s on that YA/adult line I’m not super into right now. The Mimicking of Known Successes had interesting world building, but the mystery was meh. I also don’t think you should be able to call your mc sherlockian if they’re an actual member of a police force?

(The less said about Achilles the better, if I’d been reading it for myself I’d have quit before 50%)

Several DNFs this month, alas. Lizzie Bennet was the third and last of the P&P spin-offs I own and the only one I quit. I probably could have finished it, but it wasn’t amazing writing and the characters were very immature. Maybe it’d work better if you read it while watching the show? (And not 8 years later lol). I was super disappointed to quit Scorched Grace, queer nun + mystery is a fascinating combo, but it was trying so hard for gritty modern noir that it was off putting. I also tried and quit Mostly Dead Things the same day - I was drawn in by the weirdness of the blurb, but it was pretty quickly obvious it was going more sad than quirky and we weren’t going to get along.

My daily routine now is coming home from school, getting my math homework prepped, and completing it as well as my cacophony of other work as I catch up with the Return to the Shadows podcast. Which if you didn’t know is the pod where Katherine Mcnamara (Clary Fray) and Dominic Sherwood (Jace) rewatch Shadowhunters, a tv show adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instrument series, that ended all too soon. But I’m almost caught up and they do an episode every Monday, so I’m looking for potential podcasts to listen to the rest of the week and am open to suggestions. I know I have to listen to “Supernatural: Then and Now” which is hosted by Richard Speight Jr (Gabriel) and Rob Benedict (God/Cuck), and probably “I’m All In” which is a Gilmore Girls podcast hosted by Scott Patterson (Luke). I'm rewatching Shadowhunters and I'm a bit -a lot- bitchy, angry and salty about everyone making Alec's life difficult. Clary is a nightmare for all that I get she had her world completely turned upside down, I want to smack Jace because he is being such a jerk and Izzy, for all that her intentions are good is too pushy: Alec should be able to talk and come out when he feels ready, not to make her feel better, this maybe hits close to home because my little sister was the same and she ended up outing me when I wasn't ready and things were a mess for a while, so there is that too.

It upsets me how much is demanded and asked of him with no one willing to see the situation from his perspective or even thinking how it might affect him, again, maybe I'm just projecting.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I was actually going to ask if you have or know any fanfic where Alec stands up to Jace, Izzy and Clary and stops them or stops covering for them.

You're feelings are totally valid and I can see where it'd hit a sore spot. Izzy definitely could be a little pushy in the first season and while I don't think she ever would have bluntly done something to harm Alec she definitely had a straight person doesn't ever quite get it mentality sometimes. But it was very minor and she's easily the most supportive of Alec and Magnus in the long run which was good.

Clary and Jace though yeah they're bordering on insufferable at times in season one. Especially Jace honestly. Clary gets better quickly and given her circumstances I give her a bit of a pass in the first season, but only a bit of one. Jace though, he was so awful to Alec and really everyone but Clary in that first season, he improves vastly after he gets kicked out of the Institute/gets stuck in prison etc. in season two.

Magnus is really the only person in season one to really see Alec and to see what he's dealing with.

As for the fic recs, I wish I knew of more, but Half of My Soul by hufflebee is one that stands out for me. It's admittedly only one section of the story, but Alec really stands his ground with them.

If anyone sees this and can think of anymore with a similar tone where Alec stands his ground about cleaning up all their messes etc. please let me know so anon can read them!

About the sleepover stuff... Might I just say random stuff?

I think this is done pretty much in every school, at least in Spain, but mine has this school dance/big-ass musical there's quite a bit of preparation for. In the sense that teachers have to make dances for their classes to dance, the prepare very elaborate costumes, etc (sometimes those costumes are ugly, I had to dress like a *spoon* in second grade), and there's obviously rehearsals. Those rehearsals started on Monday, and, you know, Monday I had exams. The thing is, my classroom isn't only annoyingly close to the little kid's classroom, it's also directly next to their playground, where the rehearsals for the end-of-term play are done. Wagner, I had to take my Spanish exam with the Macarena playing on the background at full volume. I was supposed to be writing about how this poets works (which are, let me tell you, depressing af) were influenced by his inability to be openly gay and the civil war and exile and all these bad, sad stuff while I had kids dancing and screaming to the Macarena.

Also, they named my school's basement after the former headmaster.

Um, I don't have book recs (because I'm not sure our interests really align lol), but I do recommend you not to read the first Bridgerton book.

Summary:

Magnus Bane was the most eligible bachelor in the Downworld, sought after by everyone from mundanes to Seelie Princes but a man tired after centuries of heartbreak. In an attempt to gain a respite from his admirers, Magnus proposed a deal. A key to his loft and a path through his wards guarded by his cat, if anyone managed to take the key, Magnus would grant them a date.

Summary of Building a Clan (aka part one in this series)

Keeping secrets was never easy. Alec should know – he was keeping quite a few. Sometimes it was hard to remember who knew what secrets. The chance of slipping up, the damage that could cause, was unthinkable. There were too many things about himself that he couldn’t let just anyone know. Too many things that marked him as wrong or different, even if he didn’t understand why sometimes. His family were the only ones to know his biggest secret, one that could get him killed if he wasn’t careful. Bad enough that his parents had once been a part of the Circle and extremely close to Valentine himself. If any Shadowhunters – or, Angel forbid, the Clave – ever found out that Maryse had allowed Valentine to inject her with something, mixing what she’d been told was more Angel blood with her unborn child, the ramifications could be catastrophic for their family. More so if they ever found out it wasn’t Angel blood that he’d injected the fetus with. It was dragon blood.

The Warlock's Cat by @dreaming-marchling, which I already put on my end-of-the-year rec list, but it deserves to be here again because So Good. Kitty Alec fic!

Summary

Pain raced up his arm. It was a sharp throb that radiated out. More than a broken bone. When Alec went to flex his hand to see how bad it was he couldn’t. His eyes snapped to his own hand and there was no hand. There was no him. By the Angel… Alec scrambled up on uncoordinated legs – too many legs! – that trembled underneath him. He panted and looked down at himself as best he could. Dark fur. Two paws, one still scorching with pain. The ground not even a foot below him even though he was standing as tall as he could. Reality was screaming at him and Alec couldn’t accept it. His brain couldn’t wrap itself around what was in front of him. That bastard had turned him into a cat.

Shoelaces and Precious Metals by @violet-renegade: Another dragon!Alec fic that is angsty and sweet and just a very nice read.

Summary

Magnus loves Alexander, his proud dragon Shadowhunter, and he knows that Shadowhunters don't display their relationships with collars the way Downworlders do. Magnus always thought he understood what that meant for him and Alec. As it turns out, Magnus didn't understand at all In the early months of their relationship, Alec had let himself wonder about what kind of collar Magnus might offer him. Sometimes, he'd even indulge in the thought that Magnus would coordinate Alec’s collars with his own outfit, marking it clear who Alec belonged to every time they went out. And then Magnus doesn't ask. And doesn't ask. And doesn't ask.

*Closed Doors Don't Lie by RedOrchid (~93k)

When the summoning of the Memory Demon reveals that it's not only Clary's memories that have been meddled with, Alec finds himself being pushed off the path set out for him and onto a different one.

this one was really good! there’s past alec / jace, and i think there are a few scenes of them getting together (i could be wrong, it’s been a while), but they are very brief.

Stone Can Be Broken by lawsofchaos (~4k)

[There’s a deep weariness in Alec’s eyes when he finally looks up to meet Catarina’s gaze. Magnus, on the other hand, turns away to glare at the wall behind Alec’s head, the line of the warlock’s shoulders as razor-sharp as the war paint masquerading as eyeliner on his face.

Alec takes a deep inhale, pushing back the hurt and tilting his chin up ever so slightly in quiet resignation as he breathes out slowly.

“In order for true love’s kiss to break the curse,” and here Alec’s voice is carefully even against the incipient tightening of his throat, “is the love required to be mutual?”]

this is like post break-up and it has a hopeful ending, but it was really heartbreaking for me.

A neonoir slow-burn superheroes AU about identity, truth, and falling in love without knowing someone’s real name (ft. everyone has superpowers because I couldn’t help myself).

this is the longest fic i’ve ever read. like, with most fics, normally i’d just stop at 200k max, because i literally just can’t read more than that sometimes. but this one was absolutely brilliant. the writing was fantastic, and there was a lot of attention to detail. there’s purple prose too, i get that it’s not everyone’s thing, but it somehow fits so well. it’s also very slow burn, you’ve got to be down for a long ride. 

*Best Laid Plans by SuperficialPeasant (~131k)

When a High Warlock looking to end his celibacy streak meets a Shadowhunter after no-baggage thrills, the two make a deal: anytime, anywhere, no strings attached.

it’s a canon rewrite, essentially. the malec relationship starts pre-canon and it changes so much. one of the tags is “63794102 things change when you put Clary Fray in a holding cell” and that’s literally what made me click on the fic. as you can probably tell from that tag, there’s a bit of clary bashing (very little though). also i love this characterization of alec. he’s so much more confidant and there is way less gay panicking with him and magnus. there’s a fair amount of well-written smut too.

I am your secret and you are mine by xxDreamy (~14k)

Magnus and Alec are leading actors in one of the most popular shows on TV. They met seven years ago on the set and became friends right away. They have been dating for four years by now and no one knows about this. As much as they want to share their relationship with the world, it doesn't seem so easy to do it so they just keep hiding. Until one day they don't have to anymore.

Aka Celebrity AU where they are shamelessly flirting with each other on every occasion and no one pays attention to it because it's how they've been for last seven years.

The man swallows painfully but Alec doesn't give him a chance to finish before he continues, "You don't live to tell the tale."]

What if Alec and Magnus had already met during that Pandemonium scene in the very first episode?

Or, how things might have gone if Magnus and Alec had just had a few extra days to get to know each other, before Valentine’s schemes, Clary’s various crusades, Lightwood family history revelations and Clave-Downworld politics made everything more difficult for them than it really needed to be.

It truly might have made all the difference in the world.

“It’s a promise, your majesty.” He smiled and Clary was aware of how could someone spell danger with their smile. “If I don’t get my husband back, what remains of your court will be nothing more than fertilizer.”
