Review: The Great British Bake Off Musical at Noel Coward Theatre, London ★★★★★
Tumblr media
Every few years, the West End is blessed with a new, witty British musical that captures the hearts of its audiences. And in 2023, The Great British Bake Off Musical, written by Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary, does just that. Following its predecessors like Calendar Girls and Made in Dagenham, this show packs all the right ingredients of the TV series while neatly blending a storyline in a musical the length of a Bake Off final.
In true Great British Bake Off style, the musical follows a range of eclectic, charming characters, led by hosts Kim (Zoe Birkett) and Jim (Scott Paige), who applied to be on the TV show for a variety of reasons. Cambridge student Izzy's (Grace Mouat) ulterior motive is to become a baking influencer and Beyonce's best friend — her number 'Obviously' sets a great tone for the sharp lyricism to come in the show.
But of course, once we’ve met the contestants, everyone awaits the grand entrance of the judges - Phil Hollinghurst (John Owen-Jones) and Pam Lee (Haydn Gwynne) who lovingly parody Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. Their on-stage chemistry, showcased in their duet 'I'd Never Be Me Without You', is one of the highlights of the show.
Tumblr media
Despite its ensemble, Bake Off largely follows the unfolding love story between Gemma (Charlotte Wakefield), a carer from Blackpool who joins the show as a back-up contestant, and widower Ben (Damian Humbley), whose daughter Lily applies on his behalf. This moment is scored by the particularly beautiful 'My Dad', spotlights the writers ability to unite humour and heartbreak.
It's clear Brunger and Cleary have a great appreciation for musical theatre with each song seemingly pastiching a variety of musicals from classic to vaudeville to modern — notably composers like Kander and Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda. And no musical is ever complete without a good lament, and in Bake Off this came in the form of showstopping Bab's Lament, taken on by the fiery Claire Moore to rapturous applause.
While it felt the audience took a little time to warm up to Bake Off - perhaps, through its broader appeal, brought in those who don't usually opt for a musical - by the time each character and their eccentricities was established, the Noel Coward Theatre had a charming and wholesome atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Bake Off has the power to stay fresh with topical tidbits (noting the current tomato shortage) and social media trends while managing to not feel like dad dancing. And if there was any doubt the quintessential Britishisms tightly knit to the fabric of this show would not translate, the Americans I had the pleasure of sitting next to were laughing louder than anyone!
The Great British Bake Off Musical is cooking up a storm in the West End until 13 May, with tickets direct from the box office here. It is now available on TodayTix's Rush.
*Tickets for this show were kindly gifted, photography by Manuel Harlan.

Claire, I have been thinking about the mashups she is doing. Like how it is now cleary giving hints about ttpd. And how last years suprise songs were clearly sending messages to us.
When ttpd is out she'll probably continue to do mashups. I feel like it is another challenge for her + imagine her doing ttpd songs pairings with her other songs.
what if she does you all over me x clean somewhere in the future? I mean..
This has been in my head for daaaays haha, I hope you get me
you all over me and clean is almost definitely going to be a mashup. i’m also interested in if a lucky one/clara bow mashup is in our future— it’ll be a fun little game to play on april 19th, guessing which songs she’s gonna mash stuff up with

Yeah I’m leaning more towards that July baecation too after they didn’t get to see each other for 3 months. I really do think they are already engaged and have been for some time cause I just don’t see why Tom wouldn’t have proposed already like the way he talks about her you can tell how smitten he is I mean him saying that she has been integral to the success and happiness of his life and career and then out her talking about getting married and having kids and being a stay at home dad. I just don’t see him not having already proposed when he’s talking like that and Cleary very in love with her and sees her as his future and his endgame I don’t see what would he holding him back, cause it’s not like they have to get married straight away they can have a long engagement, I mean this guy is out here wearing multiple pairs of jeans with her initial hand stitched on the pocket that is a man that is not waiting to propose they have been back together for almost 2 years now and almost 5 years in total and are both 26 now toms not talking like that and not actually proposing. That birthday pic she posted for him I think was from that July weekend and he popped the question then
Yea sooo many things have been sus for a while lol. 👀
Nikki and Claire FINALLY following each other after how many years?? 😅
Kaz saying "Congratulations" on their post 👀
Z feeling way more OPEN about claiming her man
Z's birthday post to Tom
That Baecation in July lollll 👀
Them kissing so much in the car hahaha....
And I agree w/you... I'm sorry, but there's no way that after being together in Atlanta the entire time, and then having that 3-month break from not being able to see each other didn't make Tom think about the future. You can't tell me it didn't. Believe it or not, people get more "clear" on what it is they really truly want when there is DISTANCE. Just saying...
Tumblr media
Anyway, with regards to timing, it's not even so much the TIMING for me. I feel like no matter how long people have dated, they should only get engaged if they feel like it's the right thing for them at this point and time in their life. Now, if you know that you want to get married right now, and a guy is shuffling his feet, then that's a different story. But if you two are perfectly comfortable with the way things are, and you know that you both want to get married to each other in the future, but just don't feel like being engaged for 2-5 years lol, then there's nothing wrong with holding off on an engagement until both of you are ready. So I really don't think it has anything to do with Tom if they aren't engaged yet. I'm sure they've both talked about things and are on the same page. 😊
MY reasons for thinking they could possibly be engaged already is due to some of the little signs I've been picking up on... not necessarily "time". JMHO 🤷

God tier
Matthew Swift series and Magicals Anonymous duology by Kate Griffin (reread). London sorcerer is raised from the dead and accidentally gets fused to the blue electric angels of the telephone lines along the way. Luscious prose, best urban magic I've ever read, and wickedly funny sense of humor.
Kane and Feels - podcast. Paranormal investigators go around London poking the mystic forces with a sharp stick. Surreal. Funny. Moderately comprehensible. There's nothing else quite like it. Someone described it as "the anti-TMA: you cannot form any theories about it no matter how hard you try."
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North (reread) - two time travelers, defined as people stuck in time loops of their own lives, attempt to unravel the mystery of their existence. Suspenseful and beautifully constructed piece of nonlinear storytelling.
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender (reread) - Rose tastes people's emotions in food. Her brother disappears into thin air. Their parents are fine. Surreal and haunting pearl of a story.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson - after a family tragedy, the surviving Blackwoods live in isolation from the village. A little Piranesi-ish subverted horror: the sense there's a secret at the heart of the world, and the secret is both joyful and terrible.
Our Flag Means Death - the crangst-filled pirate show that it seemed like the internet lost its mind over, for good reason.
Bee and Puppycat: Lazy in Space - Bee travels between the island and fishbowl space working temp jobs with Puppycat, until their pasts catch up with them. Dreamy, bittersweet, and gorgeous. Season finale was a banger.
Vesper Flights by Helen MacDonald (reread). Nature essays on humans and birds. Quiet, luminous, and filled with love of place. Faves were "The Human Flock", "High Rise", "Eulogy", and "What Animals Taught Me"
Natsume's Book of Friends (anime) - Technically about boy who can see youkai, learning how to navigate the world of human relationships. But really about masking, healing from trauma, and learning to trust.

In Wedding Crashers, the two guys whose exploits we follow are so out of order but the movie has its heart in the right place. Pre-woke comedies! You can be offensive, say and do the wrong things, but if you're someone who loves then you deserve love. Also, every social convention is mocked and the guy who virtue-signals about rescuing otters from oil spills, and shows off about studying buddhism with the Dalai Lamai, is obviously a bastard.
How did mainstream Western culture forget this stuff?
Secretary Cleary: "Once Sack and Claire tie the knot, two of the great American families, the Clearys and the Lodges, will finally unite."
John: "And then of course you can challenge The Klingons for interstellar domination, right?"

January 2024 Reading Wrap-Up!
New year, same love of books, slightly different structure for things around here. I'm keeping the monthly tracker and the mini-reviews, but skipping the prompt-based challenges because I couldn't find any that looked like they'd suit my reading tastes.
Instead, I've invented a game of my own, to focus on reading down the hundreds of books I already own: Bookcase Roulette! The rules are simple: three bookcases, five shelves each, roughly 25 books per shelf. I'm using random number generators to pick at least two books a month, and reading whatever the bookcase gods pick for me. So those will be marked in the reviews, along with whether or not I enjoyed the book enough to justify keeping it.
Beyond that, you know the drill. Monthly stats incoming, reviews under the cut!
Total books read: 5
Total pages read: 1,722
Days read: 31/31
Average star rating: 4.2
Bookcase Roulette Books: 2
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green  ⭐⭐⭐⭐(½)  I knocked this out in a day, on New Year’s Day, much to either the astonishment or frustration of housekeeping bestie ((I was reading at work most of the day, then a few hours later we saw each other outside of work and I mentioned that I’d finished the book. I ... don’t think he believed me?)) It was the first round of Bookcase Roulette for 2024, but something like 2/3 of the way through, I realized that I’ve read it before. It’s great, I loved it, but it wasn’t familiar, until I turned the page and was face-to-face with a scene I remembered so clearly. So I have no memory of the first read, but I’m completely positive that there was one at some point.
That said, all of that is about me and my experience, and none of it is about the book. John Green’s books are always so captivating to me, and this was no exception. The MC’s OCD and anxiety are so intensely palpable; I could feel myself stressing out with her as much as I wanted to give her a big hug. This is a book you should check in with yourself before reading; I maybe should have kept a closer eye on my own illness anxiety as I read along, but sometimes I live on the edge?
Never Wager With a Wallflower by Virginia Heath  ⭐⭐⭐(¼)  Here’s the thing: historical romance isn’t usually for me. But, as happened so often last year, it was in my library experience bag and I was curious. It wasn’t bad, by any means, but all of the things that usually pull me away from the genre were true here too. As for the story itself, and the characters, I loved most of that. Parts of it were laugh out loud funny, parts made my heart ache for the characters and everything they’d been through. The characters were compelling, and I wanted to be rooting for them. I did deduct a full star for the phrase “wedding vegetables,” which has haunted me every day since I first saw it, as it completely pulled me out of the story and ruined my experience of what was otherwise an excellent scene. If you like historical romance, you’ll probably like this, but I'm in no way compelled to read it again or to finish the series.
Play With Me by Claire Wilder  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  If you’ve been here for a while, you know this series has read me through three different trips now (Denver, Houston, and now Orlando). They’re consistently knock-outs for me, but this was far and above better than the rest. I’d been SO excited to read Jude’s story, and Nora felt so relatable for me. Claire Wilder does such an incredible job balancing the romance stories with Eleanor Cleary’s murder, and that really ramped up in this book. The mysterious intrigue blended so well with the friends-to-lovers romance, and Cap is just the best little dude. I laughed out loud on an airplane, I cried in a botanical garden (because of the book; not just because the flowers were so pretty), but there’s not much I can else I can say without breaking down the full context of the entire series (which, trust me, I am HAPPY to do, if anyone is interested. That’s just ... not this).
Mess With Me by Claire Wilder  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  ... And I finished out that Florida trip with the next/sort of last book in the Quince Valley series (there’s a future-set shorter story after this, but this was the last of the Kelly siblings). Griffin, the elusive “only shows up when he absolutely must” sibling, got his love story! I was really looking forward to this one because it felt like no one knows anything about Griff, and I was so eager to find out what/why. Especially after the truth he half-dropped on Jude in Play With Me, I knew this would be a good one. It picked up with the tail end of Eli’s story from Sing For Me, elaborated on Jude/Nora, and touched back with Cass and Chelsea too, so we heard from the whole Kelly clan. AND we got all the backstory on Griffin’s job and the mysterious love he told his brother he’d lost. THEN he fell in love again. Truly, the only down point was Chester, the old man who lives next door. I saw it coming, it served the plot well, I still cried. (Bonus points to the author for already announcing that her NEXT series is going to build off of where this one ended, which took a little bit of the sting away from the end of Quince Valley.)
Six Goodbyes We Never Said by Candace Ganger  ⭐⭐⭐(¼)  This month’s second round of Bookcase Roulette! As I started reading, I realized it’s by the same author as The Inevitable Collision of Birdie and Bash, which I LOVED when I read it. It also seems to be a companion piece, judging by namedropped characters and events, but I haven’t read B&B recently enough to say 100 percent. The plot was sweet – I like YA books that recognize that young adults can and do experience real-world, life-altering events. This is a book about grief, about young people grieving, about big and heavy topics. Too much YA is after-school clubs and kissing boys in the hallway, and while those stories can be great too, young people are capable of experiencing and comprehending so much more; this is truly a book for anyone who’s ever lost someone, regardless of age. Parts of the plot felt disjointed, especially early in the story, and especially with the voicemails and emails dividing Naima’s sections. I was usually able to figure out where things fit together, but it took more effort than I’d have liked and pulled me out of the story. There were some really powerful moments and quotes, and even though I don’t think I’m keeping it, I’m glad I finally picked this one up.

Sweet Dreams By Claire: A Small Town Feel-Good Delicious Irish Romance (Capture The Light Book 2) by Nanette Littlestone.
Claire is a woman who lives for baking sweet treats and flavour, so it is a good thing that she works in her family bakery, but her dream is to experiment more with flavours, however, the family bakery is very traditional. One day, Claire is asked to go up to the local castle and deliver some cupcakes for a clients wedding, although she thinks they are a little boring, she agrees and sets off on the long walk up the hill, unfortunately, a wayward cyclist foils that plan and squashes the box, but thankfully, Claire is given permission to use the resort kitchen to make some new ones and this leads on to a surprise invitation to the wedding itself.
As the days pass and the wedding grows closer, Claire is enveloped into the chaos that is Brigid Cleary and her family, including her dashing brother Finn, the man who is determined to take her out of her routine and explore the world around her. This completely unsettles Claire as she helps out with wedding dilemma's, all while still working in the bakery, but when her past comes back to haunt her while spending time with her newfound friends, she has a feeling that it is going to spoil the connections she is fostering.
The only thing Claire did not plan for was a gift with some of the magic of Ireland crashing into her life as moonlight and emotion mix, but with the dawning of a new day, things come crashing down around Claire and she has to make the decision to either accept the new direction her life is going, or bow down to the traditional values she once adored, but are the consequences attached to each option too much? This is a sweet romance based in Claremore, Ireland where culture, magic, emotions and baking collide to lead you on a journey of romance, courage and creativity.

XD I am laughing my ass off here. What a great reaction *lol* Tita was so in awe by the technologies used for Lapis that she was like "I need to take her apart to look at the tech" she surely didn't mean it in a bad way, but she scared the heck out of Lapis, so apparently Agate has to put a leash on her XD
Tumblr media
Look, I want my class 7 to be back together as much as they want to reunite with Rean but this was just an ridiculously stupid move. First of all all 3 teams would have reunited at the tower eventually anyway. It would have been much more useful for all teams to remain the way they were until then and reunite at the tower, which was their meeting point anyway. Second, Reans team is by default the biggest and thus didn't need the extra support of Alisa, Towa, Machias and Sharon so damn badly. And third, breaking of into small team to reunite with whoever will put them at a disadvantage compared to staying in this big and thus stronger groupe. But... whatever.
Tumblr media
OKAY I admit it does feel good to have all my class 7 ducks in a row again. But I still stand by that this was a stupid move...
Tumblr media
Obviously... when would he ever not?
Tumblr media
FOUR FULL CHAPTERS my boy! I waited for chapters for this reunion and NIS just fucked up the translation to make it even less impactful than it already was for your standards. Seriously.
Tumblr media
Are you now? Well... I guess you have to with this man by your side XD
Tumblr media
I am not sure why everyone is so tense about this fight. Look at what we have at our disposal. Thors united Class7 in all its glory, including the super maid as well as the complete SSS AND Liberls greatest bracers and their ZFC Maskot. Among our team are two freaking Gralsritter. We have 3 former Jeagers among us too. What the hell could go wrong with such a team?
Tumblr media
I am lucky that I am playing on very easy, because I am pretty sure otherwise I would need to put my team together with their strengths, weaknesses and Crafts in mind, instead of making a full out shipping-team XD
Tumblr media
You know what is really frustrating? With almost all the other character, their redemption never felt like they really did anything change for the better or change their mind about things... in fact, I believe even at the end Crow still thought he had the right to kill Osborne. Most of them were hiding behind sad pasts, the influence of the curse and some brainwashing here and there. Few actually truly admitted that they have been wrong. Yes, some of them admitted that they did horrible things, but often not with it looking like they truly and fully regret them. And most of the time their way back into the world of the nice guys was just because the nice guys wanted them there, or accepted them there for one good deed. Rufus is one of the characters you just want to see dead after everything he did, after all his betrayals and the backstabbing and even after he decided to take all the blame on himself and with that managed to keep Lechter and Claire free. So starting this game, you wish him the worst. But you can just not keep that up, because he does actually has the most realistic change of all and he actually truly works for his redemption and deals with his faults and weaknesses along the way. It sucks so much that you don't want to like him, but the game made it plainly impossible to still hate him as much as before. And it makes you feel bad for hating on him, while people like Crow simply get away with what is basically nothing in comparison and yet you still can't help but somehow like them.
Tumblr media
Yeah and here is a big "FINALLY!" from me. It was about time.
Tumblr media
Then maybe it is time to become a lover... but there is no sense in even thinking about going down this road even tho it is cleary right ahead of us, given how Rixia still seems to after Lloyd in Kuro. It sucks but... nothing can be done about it. This moment will have to be enough.
Tumblr media
You know its bad when this happens...
Tumblr media
He hasn't done anything particularly bad in Kuro so far, aside from a few jabs at the empire and stuff like that... but seeing his damned face makes me so angry!
Tumblr media
I guess I make my way into the reverie corridor and that it will be it for me for today.
Now that I am done for today I have a few quick choice words on the translation of this game that I have mostly been holding back, but can not hold back any longer.
First of all: The Ebon-Defense-Force originates in the Ebon-Knight and thus, they should have pronounced it in the same way. Dieter Croise is not called DieEter and its weird that Elie says it wrong and Lloyd says it right.
ALSO I do not claim to be able to read Japanese (I wish I could) but there are immense differences in translation between the Spreadsheet and the NIS-Translation and while I was at first assuming that since the spreadsheet was done only by a fan and very fast at that, that that meant it was a very rough translation there are certain parts, multiple that is, were I did somewhat understand what was said and I can definitely confirm they made some unnecessary changes multiple times.
Just to name the ones that obviously are the strongest to me is that they immensely towned down Reans favoring Alisa thingy when mentioning the guys stuck in Crossbell or even when greeting them when Reunited. There have been multiple occasions throughout the game were I know for a fact that Rean has either only mentioned Alisa (like when he was meant to reach Crow and then said he can not reach Alisa - I checked the translation back then because it seemed weird to me he would only mention Alisa instead of Towa who is his colleague - he actually really just mention Alisa and not Towa and Machias) or kept saying stuff "Alisa and the others" when talking about them as well as the Reunion-scene were he said "Alisa. Everyone", where I didn't need to even read Japanese because it was voiced and he did indeed only say Alisas name, but in the Translation of NIS he said: "Hey, over here!" or something like that without mentioning any name at all.
There have been multiple other occasions where I know for a fact that the lines were altered sometimes extremly. Even in "The fallen Prince" we have multiple moments that were changed that pissed me off. The red constellation mentioning that Cedric was worth being under Shirleys watch was an important point in that Story, because it was necessary to see between the lines what exactly Shirley had to lose, if Cedric would fuck it up. Instead they only said that théy now understand why Shirley sees potential in him, but the meaning is simple not the same. This is not just me nitpicking. Just seeing the potential in Cedric isn't enough here, the red constellation has to accept the work and time and effort Shirley puts into that boy. Speaking of which... as endearingly cute that "our boy" was, that is definitely NOT what Shirley said. Who does this "our" even refer too? Her and Garrath? Are they raising him together or what? It would have been a different story if she would have said "Our princeyboy" instead but I know for a fact that she never used his nickname in that story either.
And all the changes are even worse than some of the changes made in CS4. Titas and Agates scenes have been altered a lot in CS4, going to the point were they didn't allow Agate to actually hint at Tita being the most important person to him. Or changing the conversation were Rean is asked if he things the feelings Agate has for Tita are just the feelings of a Guardian and he says he doesn't believe its just a guardian thing.
I do partly get why they felt the need to tone down Tita and Agate as a ship but I don't get the sudden need for toning down Rean and Alisa or anything that could hint to much at Shirley and Cedric. Nor do I understand how it comes that Lloyd voice actor pronounces Dieter right and Elies doesn't.
Its frustrating and I feel like next time I play with the Japanese voices again just to here all the times they fuckt up the translation so obviously.
