(Is it true that in Lviv schoolchildren lined up in the shape of a swastika on Hitler’s birthday?)

Many Russians found this image in this context in spring of 2022 on Twitter, Telegram and VK.

The link I attached to translation will take you to the rebuttal of the posts. There you can find that these are not schoolchildren, not in Lviv, not on Hitler's birthday, and it happened a long time ago. Moreover, if you look at the photo for more than 2 seconds, you will see that this is not a swastika, but very stupid decision to make a sharp-angled 55.

Unfortunately, my first encounter with the image and the context was not on the Internet where you know you should believe nobody.

Storytime: my dad, who works in subsidiary of Gazprom, got an invitation to a conference for the workers on the topic of world history. He did not have time to go, so he invited me, mentioning that there will be some discussion of "Ukranian special operation". I knew what that meant: state-owned company will talk about the war, they will try to justify it in all ways possible. But I thought that I need to hear arguments from both sides, so I went to this conference.

And then I learned that arguments from this side of the argument is A STREAM OF UTTER BULLSHIT LIKE THIS STUPID IMAGE "Oh look, schoolchildren are in a form of swastika. And you say that there is no nazism in Ukrane?" WTF?! OPEN YOUR EYES, NATASHA! YOU HAVE BEEN USING THIS FUCKING IMAGE AS AN ARGUMENT FOR ALL DAY OF CONFERENCES TODAY AND NEVER SAW THAT IT'S NOT EVEN A SWASTIKA??!

I wanted to say something in the end, but she chose to emotionally manipulate to finish up this circus, and put a video of Russian kids talking about their dead fathers, who went to the Ukranian war, and started crying herself as well. So it was a little awkward to say "Um, sorry, but this is 55", shy little me in 2022 couldn't do it (I think me from the present could)

When I think of this propaganda conference, I remember a term 'the firehose of falsehood' which which Wikipedia kindly defines as

"a propaganda technique in which a large number of messages are broadcast rapidly, repetitively, and continuously over multiple channels (such as news and social media) without regard for truth or consistency."

This conference did not attempt to be truthful or consistant (for example, the video with crying children was really an argument for the war to end, but other arguments were pro-war). The content of the conference was high-volume (there was a lot of images, maps, and "nazi" passages from Ukranian student books). And if we put the posts and the conference under one umbrella of propaganda, then it is multichannel, rapid and repetitive to fit the definition.

This technique is so stupid, I wrote an essay on it in WTAI (beloved object who? I hate mine), so I won't write it here again. But the lecture with Maxime and Devin's stories made me imagine, what if this kind of shape was tattooed on someone.

All this preface (I needed to share this story) leads to three unfinished thoughts about this beatiful photoshop I made.

From one side, tattoo is only about a person tattooed. But actions have consiquences: an ensamble of getting this tattoo and showing it to people will provoke negative reactions. But if you do not have one or the other - people do not care.

And getting back to this picture. Can we say that the people in the photo and their organisator unknowingly became ambassadors of the propaganda? Yes, they do not talk, but their bodies (kinda) justify the propaganda's argument, without them there would not be the argument.

Entry 29 - Premonitions

7/2/22

Do premonitions exist? This is crazy, right? As I write, I now see how afraid I am. Why?? I don’t know, but it’s like a dark shadow has been following me for awhile now. I think this is depression setting in, in different ways than I have experienced before. But in the past few nights I have taken a new gummy chew to try to cut back on smoking, and, well, I think they’re making me paranoid. I am obviously going to stop taking them immediately, but they gave me this weird feeling, a feeling I didn’t like. I had weird visions of things I didn’t like, like a car blowing up, or crashing. And today on the road every accident I saw made me continuously more aware as I drove up to Lauren’s house in Georgia. This is the oddest feeling. I felt confident driving, my car has been making sounds I don’t like, but I got it inspected before coming up here with a few repairs, nothing serious. This is weird, right? Well it does go away in time, I’m not constantly thinking of death and the morbid side of life. In fact I very much love life and am glad to be alive. I love life so much that feeling like I would lose all that time is already a scary thought. But then I have to remember how much appreciation I have had for everything already. I don’t mean this to sound like an ending note, it’s not. The truth is this, I hav eso many stories left to tell. I have so much left to do. I am eager and excited for what’s to come and what I will learn, accomplish, and grow from. But so much of life is weird now. With everything. Maybe things just don’t make sense because sometimes they just don’t make sense. I am not trying to be poetic, I’m not. But life is a big huge mystery. I was never afraid of death after cancer. When I transitioned people told me I was going to hell for my transition, my lifestyle chooices, me being who I was. Was I really me or pretending to be me? Stones always cast, but those stones were knives. I have expressed greatly a lot of my faith. I am a follower (or try to be) a follower of Christ, a believer of God, and of the two. I love God with all of my heart and am so thankful to be alive. Thankful beyond words. The idea of hell bothers me. Even for me, I c an’t imagine anything as bad as it. It really hurt to hear that from others, even when people laugh it off like it’s a joke. The truth about me is I believe God loves me for who I am. I am absolutely not ashamed of who I am at all. What are the sins of the world that matter truly if is not for love? Who is hate but those who don’t show love to others, no matter the cost. I don’t imagine a world where things are the worst, but where there is peace. I know that’s where I’ll be. But for now? I am ready to roar. I am roaring. But why do I feel so constantly disconnected? Is this just a phase? So many thoughts, so little time. With love and with patience, forever and ever, to the world I am your friend, and to all I have ever known you have nothing but my love. I want to show that to you in my stories.

Film is important to me. Art is important to me. But beyond all I must remember what is most important. Family and friends, the relationships, and connections are always most important o you. Love transcends all things evil and turns them into good. Kindness allows this to happen, for without kindness, there is no love, only hate. Hate is unforgiving, hate is unkind, hate brings resentment, fear, anger, doubt, and confusion. Do not allow this for yourself. You do not deserve this, nor do they.

Fear makes us fiction writers. Instead of letting our story unfold, we manifest ideas that are wrapped in fear by continually thinking what if... Pretty soon, we’re spiraling down a hole of negative consequences to our actions in a story that hasn’t even happened yet. Much of the time, our reservations about the future are driven by fear, which holds us back from taking necessary action, and therefore imprisons us in our imaginations. To paraphrase the words of the Roman philosopher Seneca; “Our fears are more numerous than our dangers, and we suffer more in our imagination than reality.” The anticipation of any negative outcome is warranted only in the sense that we can plan how to maneuver around them, but they should never be a reason to not take action. So write your story as it happens.
